Better than UC instr. Concise, clear, enthusiastic, funny
Very Cocky teacher! Gets a kick out of impossible tests and is MOODY!
Very Unhelpful! Gets mad at you if you go to his office hours
Entertaining (informative) lectures!
Intense teaching style. Fast pace. Tests are hard but he provides notes
Amazing Teacher. Acknowledges effort and hard-working students (even if not always the smartest =) Students must have good sensor of humor though.. THanx Gary!

Multiple Choice midterms, got more than 100% grade for final.
He has great knowledge in Chemistry.
Great teacher, very helpfull if you put in the work and will go a long way to help you. IF you don't put in the work though...
PhD professor, very helpful. Explains things very well, provides notes so you aren't busy writing while hes explaining. Very funny, loves chemistry, what more could you want from a teacher?

He's a helpful teacher. Unfortunately, most students will end up getting a C by the end of the quarter. Try to explain simple things with perplexing concepts which will make u feel frustrated. If you want an easy A, not a chance to take him
My friends said he's good. So I take him. Result? Drop the class with all exams getting C and D. I'm very disappointed, seriously
What's wrong w/the person below rating him good. He must be the only exception. Well, this is the worst Chem class ever. I agree 100% with the rest of the ratings. The teacher expects you to know everything and gets mad if you don't know it. Tough Exams!!
Oh my gosh! I end up with C in his class. In chem 1a, I took Cox and gets an easy A. Then people tell me he's fun, which i dont think so right now... His exam are tough. He doesn't curve. Absolutely crazy!
He thinks he's a Caltech class. This guy simply are too arrogant. He doesn't explain chem concepts well and when exam time comes, he would just making every students look like they're stupid!
His exam would just drive people insane. This guy assumes his students are Berkeley smarties. Unless you're a genius in chem and can learn by urself, dont take him.

Jeez!!! He uses perplexing teach methods to confuse you, making him look like a knowledgable guy. His exam are hella difficult. rarely show up in office hours.
He always talks about his brilliant historical achievements during the classes. I think those talks are very boring. By the way, his exam his as hard as a stanford chem exam
..... Don't believe it when ppl say he's easy. He's hard as hell... AHHHH
Good teacher, clear and helpfull lecture. Take him, then ask me for his stuff (5$ each)
You may try him... But i dont know what is the consequence of it...
Very very tough exam! Boring classes, can't explain concepts well
This guy has a great sense of humor. He is obsessed with chemistry, and wants his students to love it too. Having him for lab is even better!
great teacher.exams are hard but very clear and teaches very well. would recommend 100%
poor teacher. very unclear in explaining concepts. do not recommend him to anyone
He will just make you mad, make you feel like u're a poor student in his point of view... Exams are hella difficult...
His lectures can be confusing sometimes. Don't read the chem. book...ONLY his notes. Refer to the book only if you don't understand his notes. He answers ANY questions related to chem. He's funny..but sometimes i just don't get his jokes.
Really stresses understanding rather than memorization. Tests are hard, but grading is very good (points for anything correct!) Stresses working problems and basics. Uses office hours to answer any questions
Awesome teacher! Very helpful during office hours! Read for those exams, you can get an A even if you get 86 percent!!! He explains very well things and even inspired me to get my Master's in Chemistry:D Stay awake in class and listen, he'll remark othws.
-_________-!!!
he's okay, just read your book and your lecture book. stay focus on exams, not that tricky and on final , look over your exams. then ur fine.
he talks about b.s , but he does know his stuff, read your book and study hard for exams, the u will pass his class. i did with an "A"
Read the text beforehand. Whatever he lectures will cover what you dont understand. And sometimes you wont understand. So read the text first. That way you wont lose too much information. Fair class. Not too easy or hard.
stressed understanding rather then memorization gives you all you need on the tests so you don't have to memorize anything. Go to class read and do your labs and you will be okay. He is a strict lab instructor but give you good habits I liked him.
amazing prof. he can explain o-chem in a way that is much clearer than other profs. even though his tests aren't super easy, they aren't impossible as long as you study. he is a great motivator for students that actually want to be chemists.
Has dome definite problems with self-control. Yells and screams at the students. Arrogant and demeaning.
Great professor. YOu will learn alot in his class. Just read his notes and do some problems out of book. Don't miss his office hours. They are usefull. I hated chemistry before I took this class, now I love it.
Don't even worry about the book, only use it as a source of backup for things you're struggling with. Read his notes, but GO TO HIS LECTURES!, otherwise the notes will not make as much sense as they can. Tests were pretty easy, just pay attention when he's talking and try not to interrupt.
Best Chem teacher at De Anza, easily.
Stern teacher... looks like ernie... from bert and ernie... As long as you buy his notes, and go to lecture and take good notes; you will be fine.
Scary guy - goes off at the smallest things. Always reminiscing about how he coulda done this, coulda done that instead of teaching o-chem.
He has problems with anger - watch out. He has a history of abusive behavior.
a freakin a**hole.. went to his office after lab to ask him a simple question and he responds by shutting the door in my face.although he constantly "encourages" the students to ask questions,he is very unapproachable and indirectly puts u down if the question is dumb.take anyone BUT him for o-chem!
HE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR EVER FOR OCHEM-I STARTED TO LOVE CHEMISTRY BECAUSE I TOOK HIS CLASS, HE EXPLAINED CLEARLY AND VERY HELPFUL. HE IS THE BEST.
FUNNY AS HECK! Lectures are very clear and keeps it simple. was discouraged to major in chem because Dr Muzzi is very demanding on her exams. Dr Fisher fixed that with his inspiring stories. I want to be a chemist again. THANKS DR FISHER!
i used to hate chemistry so much. after taking chem with Dr. Fisher, i love chemistry. my major now is Biochemistry. i owe it all to Dr. Fisher. He is the best teacher ever. his lecture is very clear and always interesting. he is very funny and extremely nice. i would recomend his class to anybody. by the note it's very helpful. he doesn't make any
An excellent teacher and chemist. Will instill a deep interest and competence in Organic Chemistry. By the end of the course, you will be better prepared than most 4 year college students. My major isn't even Chemistry, I took 12A for fun and decided to take 12B as well after having him as a professor. Made me want to change my major to chemistry.
you could say he's a blunt D---head. but that's if you're a whimp. people like him i respect because they don't BS around. You get what you get. Kissing up may get you somewhere, if you don't, then nothing against you. like i said NO BS. Loves questions. Easy to be on his good side. Talk to him normally and ask questions. No sugar coating fakecrap.
I couldn't possibly say enough good things about Gary. He's the best chem teacher you'll ever have unless you're not serious about learning and just want to mess around - don't. Put in the effort and study early and often or you will crash and burn. You will learn more than you ever thought possible in his classes, so never skip lecture.
TOUGH professor. Study hard, you might get a B. Had him for all of freshman chem. Pretty helpful though
Great prof, Didn't do well in high school chem but loved this class. Will be missedk.
He 's great.
he talks really damn fast and like a quarter of what he says are nothing related with chemistry. Test are SUPER ULTRA TRICKY, make sure to read CAREFULLY. His labs are gay and most of the class is gay. If you are a geek, take his class, otherwise switch your major.
Super super hard exam.I do all problems in text book and online assignment for twice. However, still can't get a C on his exam because he asked all irregular cases that your textbook never mentions about. Even though he work hard during his lecture, he doesn't encourage students study because you know it doesn't matter how hard you study you are not
Highly not recommended...Hard test, tough grader, always think he's a good teacher(but of coz he's not), give extra credit to those people that he likes ONLY, but not the others---so unfair!!!And his notes are not organized...it's just a bunch of S H I T!!!
BEST TEACHER I've ever had. Period. His excellent knowledge of the subject mixed in with his unique sense of humor equates to a very fun lecture. Sure his exams are tough as hell, but if you put in the effort (read, don't cram the night before) you'll do fine. His passion for the subject really rubs off on you. Great guitar player also, a plus
Exams are long and you have an hour to complete it. Make sure you have the material down cold. Overall, Gary's a funny and nice guy.
One of the better chem profs. He is very excited about chemistry. Tests were long, had to work hard, but overall I learned a lot from his course.
Very visually-oriented teaching. Places emphasis on concepts and processes, rather than formulae and calculations.
a wonderful teacher and actually one of the two best teachers in DeAnza's chem dept along with David Gray! spend 4 straight hrs of effort on EACH lab report and u can even get 16/10 i.e. free extra points to backup ur grade. tests are not easy but u ll be proud to have sucha great teacher and often u ll think "i wish i had a better teacher for 1A!"
If u go to his office, he will welcome u by saying, "It's too late to understand it". He never helps students who are behind the class.
OMG take Ochem if u want to die. Seriously.
He is an extraordinary teacher, possibly the best on campus. You will never see the world the same way after taking one of his classes. Thank you Mr. Fisher for caring about your students, unlike Muzzi.
his exams are extraordinal in a bad way. too complicated. he gave our 4th exam two day before the final. what the heck is that? he uses his own lecture note, which cost 30$$.
Test will be hard, a lot of information, but you can buy the overhead slides. overall he is definately one of the hardest teachers in de anza, but once u complete his class you'll be very proud of yourself. offers a ton of extra credit (not easy) on his test, some problems come straight from lecture. Makes lab incrediably funa dn interesting.
Gary is amazing!!! I love him to death. He will get you excited about chemistry in no time! Take him if you want to learn....but if you want an ez A then this is not a class for you. If chem or biochem is your major, i strongly recommend Gary over any other DeAnza chem professor
Gary does an excellent job, and I would strongly recommend him to anyone who actually wants to learn how chemistry works, but O-chem is hard, especially if you're not a visual thinker, and there's no getting around that. If you do take the 12 series with him, BUY A MOLECULAR MODELING KIT, and remember: KISS--Keep It Simple, Stupid.
I love Gary!! He is the OChem God....the capital letter G is not the only thing they have in common. You have to put the work in but he is the BEST chemistry teacher ever! He will prepare you and teach you everything you need to know about chemistry. Take him...he loves his students and is always more than willing to help anyone--very helpful!!
Knows the material but Not a good teacher. Gave the 4th exam the week before finals due to his own lack of spacing lectures properly. Plays favorites in the class. Highly not recommended.
if your major chemistry you absolutely need him. He will teach you staff you really need to know. His exam are not that hard like other people said, he will allow to use tones of cheat sheets and bring molecular model kits. Gary always willing to answer questions during lecture and in office hour.
Not hard to get an A. >84%=A, a lot of extra credits, the highest exam score is doubled. The lecture is fun (but not really helpful unless you read the textbook before coming to lecture). Can use official cheat sheets during exams so that you don't have to memorize reactions. Overall: good teacher.
Maybe he might be good for learning o-chem but he makes lower classes like chem1A lab extremely hard with messy lectures and an attitude against anyone he doesn't like. midterm and final was confusing so make sure you do additional work out of class. i would avoid for lower classes ike chem 1a, 1b, and 1c but take o-chem with him.
he is a good teacher,i love his class
Dr. Fisher is the best chem/ochem instructor at De Anza. Take it with him if you have the chance!!
great ochem instructor I have ever had. Take him if you have a chance. He will make your ochem classes the best it can be (especially lab). Lab is great. I got 3 A's in Ochem with him.
Gary is a hard teacher His tests expect you to do a bit more than what you read in the texts. Finals are ****ulative labs and lectures. If you're a serious sci major you should definitely take him because not only does he teach you thing you're gonna learn later but will try his best to help you. He genuinely care for his students. 1 of the best
gary is a very good teacher but his tests may be a bit difficult. as long as u study, u should be fine in the class. just study straight out of the lecture notebook he provides u. other than that his grading is really fair and im not really a chem person in the first place and i ended up gettin a B in his class! take him if u got the chance!
Best choice for science prof! His lectures are clear, he's helpful, and takes effort put forth into consideration. Study a bit everyday, and you'll do fine. Yes, he's hard, but then again most good prof's are tough. Just work hard and you'll get the mark u deserve, maybe higher.
Very clear lecture. He talks a little fast at first but once you get used to it, you'll be fine. His grading scale is generous. I did horrible in Chem 1A and 1B with other professors but ended up with an A in his class.
JUST TAKE CHEM WITH HIM, WORK HARD, AND YOU WILL GET THE A U DESERVE. STUDY A BIT EVERYDAY, DON'T PROCRASTINATE!
Dr. Fisher is an awesome teacher!! very funny!! but he is hard, especially the lab reports. tests are based on lectures. highly recommended.
HE REALLY CARES FOR HIS STUDENTS. HE'S AWESOME. THE BEST CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR. YOU LEARN A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT LIFE IN GENERAL. HE IS VERY POSITIVE AND MOTIVATING.
If you value your G.P.A. take someone else.
Exams were too hard. way too many questions. lab reports and lab exams were hard also. you don't really have to attend lectures as they're useless. just study off his lecture notes you have to buy.
Fisher is a really good teacher. A lot of individual study is recommended to pass this class. Be sure to ASK QUESTIONS, he'll be patient and answer them. "Only stupid question, is the ones you don't ask"
Do the practice problems in the book. Read chapters prior to lecture. Go to all lectures.Dont be late or u dropped. If you want a passable grade, sadly the only way to do it is extra time during his office hours to ask questions.people study very hard and come to find that the test covers alot of things that you haven't = take notes to highest level
This dude is a G. 55% for a C, but that isn't why he's awesome. He is a CRYSTAL clear lecturer. Is not there to fool you or trick you. He knows his stuff and knows how to teach it. He wants you to succeed and will do it by any means possible. I have never had such a passionate teacher (especially when he rants about O-CHEM). Bottom line. AWESOME.
no need for textbook, just follow his notes and you will be fine......
Study his lecture notes, attend class everyday, read the book, and you'll get at least a B on his tests. He generally gives extra credit on his tests. The highest lecture test grade gets doubled, which could mean the final also. Lab tests are always hard. Don't feel too bad about it. You can still pull off an A. I got A for all his chem classes.
Excellent teacher nonetheless, good character too
Seems like a nice guy, but, unfortunately, he gives the first exam after only 2 weeks of starting school! You will be DROPPED if you are late to lab or if you're seen with a cell in class. Strongly recommend taking as P/NP. Some stuff on tests, he doesn't lecture about. Don't bother with getting the textbook, he only tests on his lectures.
he'll be really straight forward with you...there's no such thing as a stupid question he encourages you to ask any questions even if it's dumb...he loves it when u ask questions...just show up to the lectures and u'll do fine...
Teacher is unfairly strict. Kicked me out of classroom, only because he observed me for "ten seconds" while I was quickly checking a message and preparing to put my phone away. I wasn't texting, nor was I being disruptive. Humiliated me in front of the class and told me to pack up and leave. Very unprofessional!
Gives an exam every two weeks! So there are six in total. Not to mention, the final exam and lab projects. How are we supposed to understand the material if he doesn't assign homework to practice and give a 100pt exam often? He says do the practice problems in the book, but we're not tested on anything in the book! Don't buy it!
Mr. Fisher is a very great man, he is the best teacher. I am taking chem 50 with him and i will take chem 1 A, EASY if you use your mind and if you pay attention in class, of course he will kick you out of class if you just plAY WITH UR PHONE OR TEXT, WE ARE NOT LONGER IN HIGH SCHOOL PEOPLE , if you are in the class then you should pay attention.
Dr. Fisher is really great. He knows all his stuffs. He don't use the book often because he said that the book will mess the students up. He is not that hard of you follow his instructions. He just wants to frighten you guys all at the first day of the lecture. You will find he is very funny and always cares about his students
I can't believe some people think he is strict and arrogant. Lab report and tests are a bit hard because of certain requirements and multiple right answers but he always gives extra credit on tests and helpful when you seek help. He is the most friendly prof who truly cares about his students. I am going to wish my best luck to take him for O-chem
makes lectures enjoyable, very clear lectures, labs are a little messy cuz he doesn't go according to the book. DO NOT:use your phone in class/ attempt to cheat, expect to practice lots of questions, take the class if your english isn't fantastic. take the guy. he's not the wrong way to go.
Fisher is a great man, he always make humorous joke in his lecture, but his tests are very difficult, if u get A b4 the final,u dont need to take final. Ps: get his past paper, it will help for your grade.
he is ok... likes to joke in class and during lab, had a fun time with him... just study his notes and you'll be fine.
He makes chemistry so interesting and exciting that u just want to keep learning.TAKE HIM! He doesn't expect u to memorize a set of rules n numbers becuz thats not fair, thats just basically a test of memorization then. He stresses u to understand concepts, instead, which is how it should be in a class. u do have 2work for ur grade but its worth it
Fisher is cool. He tells a few too many stories during class, and his guitar skills are suspect, but he definitely knows his stuff when it comes to chemistry. He always answers questions, has decent office hours, and is generally a nice guy. The classes aren't easy, but this is science, not PE. Put in the work and you'll do fine.
I know, I know! He's hell'a hard in Chem 12... Very picky in answers, always expect u to explain! However, I've never slept in class--a funny guy with cool chem jokes. Take him if u want to learn chem and does not care about ur GPA. I changed my major from Bio to Chem because of his Chem 1A! Nice try Gary!
He rocks my world although he was kinda scary in the beginning. He is EXTREMELY HELPFUL and willing to listen to your opinion about the class, about your grade, about your chosen career (and even about your chemistry nightmare). Can't wait to take Chemistry 12B with Mechzilla (alter-ego of Prof. Fisher)
Prof. Fisher is straightforward, clear, and expects all chem students to succeed. He is a no nonsense professor, know your material prior to all lectures or you will sit there dumbfounded. Exam material, even if it is MC, can be challenging for 1B. Study both Garys course notes and the book. Special lecture topics post-exam were fun and informative
Okay, let us be real. HE is hard teacher his exams are really tricky and hard no matter if u do all the book problems.going to his class is waste of time, because u can learn on Ur own better than listening to him for an HR. Lastly if u have the chance take David gray because he is the best in ochem as well as in gen chem.
I took him a couple years ago. He seemed to have a really good understanding of chemistry and explains well, but the class is still kinda hard. I dropped it cuz he didn't tell me what I did wrong on my lab reports and kept giving me bad grades, just tells you you suck and need to pay attention pretty much. Very discouraging professor.
Many ppl got tormented in his 12A/B, but not his 12C! His grading in 12C is super lenient: full points on lab final for everyone! Besides, his 12C custom labs are extremely fun and works perfect! (u dont have this kind of fun o-chem lab exp. w/ other profs! Trust me, take him!) (BTW, no one failed his 12C this yr)
ok he's very funny and clear and helpful,... everything you can expect from a great teacher. However you have to study to do well in exams. READ THE NOTES, just dont care about the suggested problems in the book as it wont be on the test. If you get an A before final then you wont have to take final, which is very helpful for me.
Professor Fisher is awesome! His lectures are very interesting and funny. He is always willing to help and will make sure you write perfect lab reports by the end of the quarter. His exams are pretty hard though and you need to study like crazy!
Very generous grading scale! You can fail your midterms and still pass: 64-55% is a C! Suggested problems are not helpful. The tests are based off his lecture notes. Each test has extra credit problems. All multiple choice. He is willing to help you if you go to his office hours. He is very nice if you ask him questions. Get to know him!
His exams are hard.. but he will do everything he can for you to understand..so ask plenty of questions! He sells his lecture notes but those are pretty confusing to understand.. you will need to study a lot. His grading scale is extremely curved.
His is the best chemistry instructor I have ever had. He makes the topic interesting for you. Also, he is very flexible about grading.
Great teacher this one. CHEM002 was a delight. Dr. Fisher puts difficult concepts into perspective for students and he is very approachable. Advice: attend the lectures (they're priceless), read the text, practice stoichiometry, have fun!
Amazing Professor by far the BEST Chem. professor I have ever had. Dr. Fisher really cares about his students and does not mind if they as questions. He is very helpful.
HARDDDDDD
This class is the type that have people kill themselves. Put in nearly three hours a day to keep up with material and yet i scored a 40% on the midterm like most of the class. This stuff is not easy and Gary doesnt do much to help that. Avoid this teacher if you are not a DEANZA student. taking him at UCSC where ochem is condensed into 2 quarters
Class is literally useless unless you treat it like office hours and ask questions. He uses typed notes not lecture slides which are pretty useless. You're pretty much learning out of the book. First test was super hard and the second one was more reasonable. He barely gives partial credit and scolds you when you ask for it. Definitely avoid.
He taught at UCSC for the first time and hope he never comes back. First midterm average was 20-30%, he gets mad at us and doesn't curve and didn't give us a practice midterm. Second midterm the class figured out how to study for his test, average was still a 68%. The final, he put materials that he told nobody to prepare for. He is horrible.
He rambles a lot which made going to class pointless. No practice exams and expects us to follow from his printed handouts (were not that helpful). His 1st midterm was difficult and long (avg was 30%) , the 2nd was more reasonable. Final was extremely hard. Pretty much had to self-study from the book. I regret dropping this class when I could.
Completely unreasonable ochem class. First midterm average was a 20% and then is frustrated at the class rather than reflecting on his teaching methods. Second midterm, slightly more reasonable. Final? Completely foreign material. Claims to have covered it during lecture but as an attendee, it was not covered nearly enough. Avoid at all costs.
Lectures are horrendous! He completely lacks clarity, goes off on tangents every other minute, and lecture notes that are more cluttered than the actual text book required for the class. The average for the first exam was 20-30% and the final was a complete curveball. I was doing fine in chemistry until he came along. Downright awful teaching.
His tests are difficult because he doesn't give us a general framework of what it would look like. He doesn't even give us a practice exam. He also rarely does examples in class (which is absolutely essential, especially for something like ochem) the 20-40% average on first midterm says everything. avoid.
Awesome Professor, he is a master in his field. Go to office hour. He gives very interesting anecdotes. If you want to kill it on the final, DO 5 ROUNDS OF THE HW!!!!!!!!!!!
A convoluted subject like organic chemistry does not deserve to be taught be such a rude and unreasonable person. Would avoid at all costs!
Organic chemistry is hard. His lectures are not the clearest but the class is doable if you read the book and do practice problems. If you go to office hours and sections and ask questions, you can get an A. You just have to put in some work.
He might seem intimidating the first class, but Professor Fisher is one of the nicest professors there is! I only had him for o-chem lab but his lectures in lab were interesting and he was very thorough. He is a fair grader and simply wants his students to succeed. Don't be shy, ask questions! He is willing to help you in any way he can.
Very good teacher, approaches a difficult subject in a way that makes it clear and engaging. His lectures are very entertaining and he doesn't make struggling students feel bad. I strongly recommend Gary.
Gary is awesome. He offers office hours at convenient times and sees the work you put into the course. He emails you a set of lecture notes and they are helpful for the exams and final.
I do not recommend Gary if you are bad at chem or do not have a great foundation of it.. He is not great at lectures and goes off topic to explain old stories. He doesn't tell you what you're exactly going to be tested on but he does grade leniently.. Just beware for not understanding a lot. He will not inform you on A LOT of important stuff..
Fisher is the worst professor. Please do not take his class. His lectures are boring, and he goes off topic a lot. He expects you to already know the material. He made me feel terrible about assignments I worked really hard on by writing rude comments. Also, he grades very harshly. Do not waste your time and find a different professor.
Ok.This is a college level chem course,of course it's gonna be hard.Exams are honestly so free and easy w/ so much EC that you need to try to fail. But, many instructions are unclear/confusing for labs, but if you do what ur supposed to do as a student and study.. you're fine. I would take the class for the ez exams just carry urself for the content
