HARD! Attend class and he's survivable.
He must be using a different book than his students -loves listening to himself
Whenever a student asks a question, he never lets them finish because he thinks he knows what they're going to ask -- but he's wrong half the time. You'll get the same grade in the class whether you go or not.
Tell's the same story two times in the same class period and multiple times throughout the semester. He never explains what he writes on the board unless someones asks. Extremely confusing and difficult course. Not recommended.
Worst professor I've had so far at Pepperdine. Nothing good about his class. He's very hard. He loves to add trick questions on his tests. I consider myself to be knowledgeable in macroeconomics, and I suffered in his class.

His exam-40 mult. choice questions that are confusing/tricky. The test is a packet, SEVERAL pages long. If you're susceptible to anxiety attacks dont take the class, or at least, dont take the tests. However, an A on the final gets you an A in the class.

zzzzzzzzz.
The more I go to class, the more confused I get. Sleep an extra hour, read over the stuff sometime, and hope you can guess well.
Terrible. All he does is yell/lecture straight through the whole class...avoid if you can!
I have never had such a bad teacher/professor in all my years of schooling. Galles is so full of himself and doesn't belong at Pepperdine. He writes the problems on his test in a way to trick you and gets a kick out of it. AVOID HIM!
There is absolutely no correlation between working hard and attending class and doing well in Galles' class. It's all luck. Give up now.
he sucks
He IS Bounderby from Dickens's Hard Times. A pompous character, with little or no ability to convey material through lecturing... an important trait for a professor who doesn't use the book.
Dont even bother with going to class, there is no point he will only confuse you. Read the text and hope you can decode his multiple guess exams
did better on tests when I didn't go to class. Went to class and got confused. He tries to help but talks in circles. Good guy just not a great teacher, also he takes pride that no one has ever scored perfectly on any of his tests
Wow, there goes my 4.0, just barely managed a C in his course. He is terrible, good luck trying to sit through his overly verbose classes.
Libertarian...need I say more? What an aweful class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! Trust me, take it in summer school, or take another prof. Galles is terrible. I am a straight A student, but no longer after taking his class. Spare yourself the agony of two hours with this man.
Whether you go to class or not, you're still going to do horribly on his tests. One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Listen to everybody else, you're better off guessing on his tests and sleeping in on days you have class.
Look at the other comments, don't take this class, and if you do, i highly reccomend having taken Micro or at least econ 200, you will do horribly if you have no previous econ experience. Only good thing is hes always available for help, but its too confusing to begin with.
Dont take this course. he likes to confuse students and give out confusing tests to make sure we know we're dumb and he's smart. One time, i approached him out of class and he refused to help me because i didn't attend all of his boring lectures. i would have, if the lecture was good.
Sure he's a tough freekin' teacher and has the most coarse personality ever. But underneath it all he's suprisingly intelligent and can teach you alot. Lose the intimidation factor. Take good notes, read the text & study the handouts. He grades on a big curve! You work hard & learn a lot here!!
Hes a nice guy and really knows his stuff. His tests are impossible though. I started laughing half way through the exam because it was full of things I had never seen. You have to go to every class and dedicate so much time that it is really not worth it
WORST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. I used to like econ but I dreaded each class. I even went to class, read the book and still didn't understand his tests. Hes a smart guy, and he loves it that nobody can understand him. I would ask for help but he'd just go around my question. Makes econ way too hard.
Ignore other comments. He is knowledgeable, smart, has interesting lectures, and a great teacher. Nice guy,was always availible for help. Tests CAN be challenging, but BIG CURVE! DO come to class, READ text, take notes, study handouts and workbook and it'll help prepare you for exams. NOT impossible
Really Hard, really unclear, a B is difficult
Take this class if you want to learn a ton from one of the smartest profs at Pepperdine. Avoid it if you're lazy, don't like taking notes and/or don't attend class. This class is for those who enjoy learning and want to get to know their profs. His tests are hard, but they have a huge curve. They are manageable if you put in the effort.
Galles is a great Prof for Econ majors and minors. I'm an econ major and a 'B' student that doesn't try too hard. I went to class, paid attention, studied for 15 minutes twice a week, and got an 'A-'.
He is terrible. Going to class made me even more confused. Avoid him if you can. He tells you that he makes his tests so hard to make people fail. I study my ass of and with the curve get c's and I am an A student. MADE ME HATE ECON. FOREVER!
learned more about econ in his class than in all other econ classes combined...unfortunately my grade didn't show as he is a very tough grader...
Hard teacher who will not reward with a high grade for your effort. However, you will learn more in his class than all other econ classes combined.
As an Econ major, I feel that this is the worst professor in our department, let alone the whole school. I don't often dislike professors to this degree, but he truly does not care about his students. I did not learn anything from him. Avoid him at all costs.
Leanred a whole lot!!!! Not very clear, so read before class, so you can follow along during his lecture!!! He is by far the best econ teacher. I definitely love this guy!!!
This guy really doesn't care. he is right and he knows it. he actually told me not to come to class if it wasn't helping. good because you really don't have to attend and he doesn't care but bad because honestly going to the class won't help you. you either get it or you don't. easy to get a C hard to get anything else. good luck.
his class notes are boring and he rambles a lot. he considers himself the "gatekeeper" of the econ department and tries to weed out "weaklings". he also loves to hear himself think/talk, distributed tons of handouts of articles he's written in local papers - who cares?! just TEACH
Do not take him unless you have to. His tests are hard, and he will admit that to you. If you read his lectures don't sound like they are in Zwahili, but more like French. Seriously he can be difficult to follow, but he knows his stuff. His tests are on application, not memorization.
well, majority possesses the truth. study hard and do not even doubt any question. follow him then you may succeed
His tests were very hard for a GE because he stresses application like its an upperlevel course. Not a good professor for people who are not interested in a future in economics. His tests force you to apply the material rather than just memorize the material. I learned a lot and remember it after the class. Great class for econ majors to take
The subject is hard. The teacher requires a lot. However, if you really listen and try to understand what you read in the book, you will be fine. To take Galles is good for those who want to learn subject. if you don't, do not take the class.
For business professor, indeed has tough tests. However, big curve and you learn a lot! If you can focus and take notes in class, he refers to all the hard kinds of questions that end up being on the tests. You know exactly what to expect if you work and attend class. People complain cuz you actually have to be sharp to get the A or B, unlike most.
Very tough teacher. Doesn't assign any written homework except a ton of reading. Will give you examples and answers your questions. Sort of crazy and disorganized. Grades your test right when you turn it in.
Repeats the same class every day. I have taken econ before in highschool and still am having a difficult time.
His lectures are very confusing and hard to follow. His tests are extremely hard.
Galles is a brilliant guy. I went to class, read, and listened to lectures, but never took notes. Had B's on all the tests, somehow got an A on the final. His brain is working at a million miles an hour and has a hard time bringing macro down to his students level. Read the book over and over until you understand it- you will learn it. Its doable.
He's very hard to follow in class, not willing to help you understand advanced concepts, and fails most of the class on any given exam.
One of the most brilliant professors ever in Pepperdine. You really learn a lot. Read the book, go to his lectures and you will be fine. A is totally attainable if you calm down and study.
I had him last year first semester. I had heard horrible things about the class, and though it's difficult, it's not the impossible monster a lot of people make it out to be. He's a pretty quick-talking lecturer, and he's very enthusiastic. He curves the tests, so B's are generally A's. I read the text, took notes, made sure to study, and got an A.
Nice professor who always has his door open for students. Material is often complicated and tough to understand for young students. Tests can be nearly impossible, and studying does not tend to help. Probably great for upper-division courses, but a tough Intro to Macro professor.
go to lectures and read the book. manageable if you put in the effort. Galles is happy to help, but he can be intimidating at times. Extremely intelligent man but a tough professor
Pretty good, helpful, not politically biased as some econ professors
Galles was one of the best professors I've had in the Econ division. I'm an econ major so of course I didn't mind going to class and doing the reading. That's essential to getting a good grade in his class. I would recommend him to others, but you have to be willing to put in the time and effort outside lectures.
Galles is really really nice guy, but he talks at 100000 words per minute. It's really hard to follow him because he says all these complicated concepts, summed up in 10 words. His exams are extremely hard compared to other professors' exams. Try to avoid this guy. He's really nice and willing to help though, although I still don't understand him.
Dr. Galles is very hard. Hoever, if you put in the effort necessary to do well in this class, you will remember what is taught. Thus, his class is an excellent foundation for later ECON courses, though can be a frustrating amount of work for those only taking it as a business major required class.
Overall nice guy, hard tests, and a preset curve. Be forewarned that he's very very libertarian and can come off as arrogant.
Galles is one of the only Professors at Pepperdine I feel presented a college-level challenging course. He inspired my Econ major and challenges my view of the government, economy, and social structure of the US every class. It is not an easy A because he actually cares about the material. The knowledge you will gain in this class is invaluable.
He is one of the best professor at Pepperdine!! Dr Galles is so willing to help you and extremely knowledgeable! Sometimes, I go to his office hour to ask him not only about Econ, but also History and Government! Many students blame on him for his hard tests because they never went to the class, nor did they read the book!
Literally the hardest class of my life. I am intelligent, I study hard, I go to class, ask questions, etc. What he teaches vs what are on the tests is a near 180 difference. All he teaches are stories the whole time. Think you know the material? nope. You will leave thinking, "wtf was that?" feeling completely defeated. good luck to you, brave soul.
Galles is a fantastic professor. His Macroeconomics class is a weeder class, and if you aren't good with logic it will be tough. He focuses on concepts rather than memorization, so he presents many examples of each concept. Read the text, go to class, do the review questions. I highly recommend this professor.
Dr. Galles is a great professor who offered college level learning for his students. Yes, his class was hard, but not impossible. Just read the book and come to class and you'll be fine, which many students failed to do. I kept up with the reading and always came to class and I ended up with a B...which is pretty good for this class!
Gary Galles is an absolutely brilliant man. Though he may have very firm views and teach a difficult class his passion for the subject far surpasses all else. All his bad reviews are from people who did not go to class which is around 80% of the kids. If you read the book and go to class an A is in reach. He also is always willing to help.
Gary Galles has a tangential problem. He literally goes on random tangents that make you lose site of his lecture's goal. Because of this, he will drastically curve his test... he KNOWS his students don't get it (Im talking 42/100 = C on tests). He knows his stuff, we cant deny him that. However, his teaching methods will leave you bewildered.
His class is not that boring but it's definitely difficult. I would say this is the hardest class I've taken at Pepperdine, but the tests were not the hardest tests I've taken at Pepperdine. The tests were very difficult in terms of wording and the choices he gives. They're all multiple choice and they're the sole determinant of your grade.
This class takes a lot of effort. For econ-minded students, it's not too bad, but for students who don't conceptualize well, it will be tough. Expect challenging tests and thorough, but sometimes repetitive lectures. His class weeds out business students from econ students, and is challenging. Always available to give extra help. Loved this class.
The best
The worst professor at Pepperdine. I understand stuff from the textbook reading but he just confuses everyone in class. He goes off topic all the time and barely focuses his tests on what he teaches in class. Can't escape his 211 class, but never take him for upper-div classes if you can.
Prof. Galles is a more than fair professor. Do the readings he assigns which are not extensive and go over the handouts he gives out and you will do fine. Curves his test 10% which is more than fair. Go to his office hours if you are confused, they help a ton. He is a bit arrogant but I found it to be refreshing from the more dull profs.
His tests are curved based on 30 years of the class' history, and A's are very hard to come by. He will loath you if you go to his office hours, but still go. Do all this, you will learn more than you wish. He is very hard to deal with; he'll never let you finish your sentence, he'll ramble, etc. You must be intelligent and willing to work hard.
Professor Galles is a brilliant man, his problem is he simply cannot teach. All the knowledge of economics is sitting in his head, but he is unable to successfully relay the information from his head to students in a way that is coherent and understandable. The textbook is your best bet, but even then the tests are quite difficult.
His class is straight lecture the entire period. Be prepared to take notes and read the book. Don't expect anything higher than a C. But he curves so if you just show up, you get a C.
Go to every class, take notes, know you won't do well on his tests even if you are extremely intelligent. No choice really for incoming Freshman he's the only one teaching Econ. Good news when the class is over, be glad you won't have to ever take him again.
Gary is a fabulous professor, he talks about the material in an very interesting way. This is the most interesting class I have had during my first semester of my university.
I'm not the type that has many regrets in life. I normally think "Well, what's done is done." But, after hearing that there was another professor who taught this class, I REALLY regretted taking it with Professor Galles. His lectures are incredibly hard to follow, and his tests make or break your grade. All you can do is read the text and handouts.
I have never written a review for a professor, but the experience I had in this class made me feel like I should warn incoming students. If you have the option to take this class in the summer or abroad do so because Professor Galles' Macro class is unnecessarily difficult. Lectures are impossible to follow and tests are super confusing.
Professor Galles is considered the gatekeeper for Econ and Business majors. As such, he takes great pride in upholding standards rather than engage in grade inflation. I resented this as an intro student, but came to appreciate it in the quality of his upper division courses. His classroom "antics" are illustrations only. Read the book before class
Since your grade is based of three test you have to make she to do good on all of them. Had a C in the class for the first 2 but then the final which was worth about 44% of your grade came around which was full of confusing questions. NO help just tells random stories in class that makes it even more confusing
Be ready to really study on your own for this class. His way of teaching did not work for me. He went off-topic all the times and I was very confused, did not know what was really important. He sat in his chair and talked all day, and never once stood up to write on the board. I also felt intimidated to ask during class as he wouldputmeonthe spot.
His class is unnecessarily hard. Never expect to have a clear logic through the whole course. Never take his course again.
Wanted to leave a review for people like me who freaked when they saw the reviews- you can totally pass this class. If you're willing to put in the work to understand the material you'll do fine since he is willing to round your grade up if he sees improvement. Use and understand the worksheets, it's the biggest key to passing. You'll learn a lot!
Contrary to popular opinion, I enjoyed galless class. He is funny, witty, and he cares about his students. The exams are mostly multiple choice, so its not a very difficult class to do well in. The people that complain about his course never show up to lecture, dont read, and dont study. I personally never showed up, but I read and studied B+
He is a very good economist and all the concepts he discusses in class actually make sense. The problem is his teaching method. He talks extremely fast for 99% of the class time. His teaching is all over the place, doesnt follow the book. This is a very hard class. He will say some of the smartest things in class but your test scores will be low.
Make no mistake, this class is hard and he makes no attempt to make Econ as a subject anymore bearable. However, if you have to take this class for your major, I would recommend him. He really emphasizes knowledge and learning the material. He's also readily available for office hours.
If you can avoid this class, do it. His teaching style is unorganized and he often goes on rabbit trails. It did not help me to go to class, except to get the handouts. The handouts will save your grade.
Hands down the worst professor Ive had at Pepperdine. Great guy, awful teacher. His lectures make virtually no sense even if youve read the material beforehand. Used no visual aids and tests are close to impossible to do well on. I am a straight A student and I was thrilled I even passed.
I honestly have never felt this way for any professor in my life. Please take it from me and my classmates, avoid taking this class with him as a Professor. He PURPOSELY makes exams impossibly challenging. His words exactly: My exams are made for you to struggle, this is why a barely passing grade is considered a good grade.
Absolutely AVOID. This is an intro class that is graded to make you fail. If you spend ALL of your time on this class, you might pass.
Galles gets a hard rap and I only think its partially deserved. The class is hard, yes, but its not unreasonably difficult. As long as you attend the lectures, read the chapters, and read the handouts he gives you youll be fine. His grading scale for an A is an 80% or above too which is nice. He gives lots of practical examples to understand.
Went in expecting the worse, wasnt terrible but I can def see why my friends disliked his class. Grade is test dependent and lots of reading. Show up to class on time bc youll need the handouts. Grade ranges are wack bc theyre not specific (for +/- differences). Lectures are LONG. Check tests for mistakes, he made a couple, he gave points back.
Honestly, this is the first professor I can say is just horrible. He does not teach, he talks. Your entire grade is from 3 exams that he just doesn't prepare you for. I felt no hope going into any of them after studying for hours and paying attention to each lecture. I believe he sets his students up to fail.
I beg you to avoid taking Gary Galles for ECON211 at all costs. I did everything possible to try and teach myself the material (rewatching lectures, teaching myself the textbook material, etc) but NOTHING WORKED. He makes his tests super difficult where he flat out tells you you won't do well on if you are a nonecon major. Good luck in his class.
I learned way better by going to a tutor than going to class. his lectures make zero sense and do not help. his test questions are not grammatically correct and he wants to trick his students. would never take again. please dont take this class
Absolute worst professor! He does not teach the material. His tests are super difficult, and you won't learn anything. YOU WILL NOT DO WELL!!
You will not learn anything. He talks to you like you know all of the material. He does not link material at all, everything is jumbled together and doesn't;t make sense. 1/5 of our class is left... does that tell you anything?
His lectures are way too long and confusing, and he goes off topic way too much
DO NOT take this class, UNLESS you are ok with a C in the class no matter what. I saw other reviews and thought it couldn't be so bad. It is. Three tests, nothing else in grade book. Tests are for advanced macro students even though this is an intro class. His lectures are extremely complex and talks too fast. Avoid at all costs, you will regret.
To preface, I thought that these reviews were written by students who never went to class or cared about the subject. Although it was a beginner class, it is taught at a graduate level. Only 3 tests! Even if you go for office hours and get tutoring, you will not pass. Do not take! 30 kids started in my class, 5 left and the highest grade was a C+.
He never tells you how you are doing in the class and doesn't put grades on Courses. He just writes your score on a sheet and calculates it at the end. If you ask him how you are doing, he will just say "IDK". You need to be fired!
This course is SUPER Hard!!! Choose other professor if you can. The test is incredibly Hard. You have to study 3hours a day for his course!!!
The grade is based off the there cumulative exams. There was no work in between and the lectures were not helpful. Best thing is to just read the book.
Dr. Galles' class was the worst class I have ever been a part of. Three exams were the only scores counted toward one's final grade. If you ask a question relating to the subject matter, be prepared to hear a condescending and arrogant response. Dr. Galles does not belong in the undergraduate sphere--especially in the INTRO level courses.
I have never had such a bad experience with a professor in my life. I had always done well in economics classes, but did so poorly because he does not actually teach you anything. He emphasizes how he wants you to learn application rather than having us memorize, but then does not actually use application in anything.
Professor Galles is definitely a teacher one should take if they actually want to learn something contributable to society from college instead of just coasting into a degree. His class is a grind, but once completed the knowledge one obtains is miles ahead of what the average college student graduates with. Read the Handouts!
Just terrible. You won't learn and you will have to drop the course
Although I love Professor Galles as a person, do not take this class. This is the most I have ever studied for a class, and I still got a C. Only take his class if it is the very last option available for Macroeconomics. Regardless, if you get into his class, focus on using the tutoring lab and use the practice quizzes he gives you
Do not take him. It's not that bad I guess, but seriously he makes an Intro to Macroeconomics class extremely difficult and is not approachable either if you need help. If you have him, best of luck. Prayers are the only thing that will get you through. Oh, and do the readings before every class. His lectures are a waste sometimes.
He does not teach anything. Only 5 people went to class each day. I went to a tutor twice and that was the only way my grade was salvaged. He goes on random tangents in class and what he writes on the whiteboard makes no sense. He taught me absolutely nothing. Not the end of the world, but terrible professor. Literally get him out.
Class is honestly pointless because of his tangents, only good reason to go is if you have questions. His tangent make lectures so hard to follow & makes no sense. I have learned nothing and feel unprepared for my upper divs. I went to office hours multiple times, went to a tutor, and still feel like his method of teaching & tests are so confusing.
Dr. Galles' class is challenging, but using Unstuck AI and diligent textbook reading can help. Lectures can be hit-or-miss, so staying engaged is key. With dedication, you can succeed, but be prepared for a tough, memorization-heavy course.
He did not teach at all. Just rambled about his kids. You have to read the book front to back, and use the practice problems he gives you because that is about all you have to study. His lectures were not even worth it to go to. Not a teacher, just gave out 3 tests that determined your entire grade.
