This is the best science prof. I've had in my entire life. He makes it a lot of fun, and is extremely funny as well.
he's awesome! relates topics to your life, which makes it easier to understand the material. great sense of humor! Expects you to know the material, but finds ways to make it fun/easier to understand. An overall cool dude!
He's an awesome teacher! The class is fun especially the labs!
Class is a tough class, I'm not gonna say its easy but hes an awesome professor who's very willing to help and wants students to succede. He will help in any way possible. What he talks about in class is whats on the exams and he goes at a good pace.
He is the best professor I have ever had, but if you take this class and the lecture is early, be sure to get some sleep. If you don't, then you will miss a lot of important info that you will need to know for the exams. Guarenteed.
Really nice guy, his humor helped in the early morning hours thats for sure. He makes sure you know whats going on before he moves on, very helpful, the labs were really fun! I learned alot!
He's a very nice guy. He gets really excited about his subject and that gets you excited as well. I can't stand science, but he made it enjoyable (even an 8:30 lecture) and even interesting at times. The labs are awesome and you get to eat stuff!
Gary is the man, I hate science, but he made it fun, the labs were very interesting, and he always had great stories. I ended up being asked to tutor for the class because i did so well. I loved the class by the end!
This man can teach! His passion for the subject translates over the way he teaches it. I would recommend his classes to anyone. He knows what he is talking about and he is able to make the subject appeal to everyone.
Do not take this class, you will hate it. He may be okay for the lower level sciences, but not for this. He's arrogant, and one of the worst profs I've had. He doesn't teach and makes a point of talking above our heads. It takes him at least 3 weeks to hand back anything that we give to him.
good teacher and put it in a perspective that I can understand and you can tell he really likes to teach the subject
The stuff you learn is really interesting. I took this for a gen ed. I hear all the rest of the profs for 105 are really easy. He lectures for the whole class every class and the tests are pretty hard. So good note taking is a must. I dont hate the class but its not the best
He certainly has a passion for what he does. But, as a non-science major i thought that some of the things he talked about were over my head. He did his best to understand that most people take his class for a gen.ed. Tests are hard, attendence isn't mandatory but will help you greatly.
He is the reason I decided to be a science major. Excellent professor, knows what he is talking about, keeps the class interesting, and is very funny. Even if you absolutely hate science you will love it with him.
Greer is one of the worse prof. I have ever had! He is very passionate about his teaching which I admire, but he can not stay on one subject. He jumps back and forth so much and just when I thought I understood his lecture, the test proved I obviously didn't.I hated this class!Run away!
If you are taking a 100 level class with him, be prepared for a 300-400 level class He tries to "dumb down" the material but then turns a 180 and has the material on the test very technical no matter how good your notes are it doesnt help you have to tape record the lectures and look up everything
Very interesting class. . .I learned a ton, especially for a 100-level class. In fact, it was a bit too much. I'm not against learning, but he really throws a lot at you and the tests are pretty tricky. He is always around to help though and encourages asking questions.
I'm not sure anyone told this guy that this is a 100 level class...Lectures are long and full of TONS of detail, but usually interesting. Tests and quizes are very difficult. Recommend a different prof if you want to keep your GPA.
Greer is unclear and his assignments are as well. Upon completion of an assignment you will come to discover that he wanted something completely different and will be penalized accordingly. He seems to be a very angry man and the name Environmental Ethics is very misleading, it should be Religion and Nature since all we learned about is religion.
Be on your toes, I pulled a 4.0 but studied everyday. He will mark you down on essays if you don't write EXACTLY what he wants. Super nice guy. You will learn a lot. Gives you study guides before exams- use them! Take any extra credit he gives. Difficult for a 100 level course. Good luck!
WOW. I have never has so much stress brought on by a 100 level class. Tests and quizes are very specific, and wording on essays must be almost exactly how he would have said things. Study insanely hard if you want to do well. I did wonderfully in 120, and am struggling to keep my head above water with Greer. GOOD LUCK
This guy is passionate about his job. He loves it. he does seem to force his ideas on you at times but he is always there for help. his assignments take a while to do but if you follow the criteria he gives you. You will be ok.
Professor Greer isn't easy, but you will learn a lot from him. You really need to approach his classes with a good deal of commitment. As long as you keep up on the notes, it isn't hard to get a good grade. He provides a lot of study help, and some interesting extra credit.
Very interesting and knowlegeable professor. Makes class time go by quickly. Although the tests are mostly essay he provides a study guide which the test is made from. Great class!
Quite possibly the worst prof ever! He should not be teaching this class because he has NO clue what he is talking about. He tells you what he expects on an assignment AFTER you hand it in. Then he complains that nobody did it right! He should be fired!
It blows my mind this guy has a smiley face. Lots of talk about being fair/consistent, followed by no action; he's just going to do whatever's easiest for him at the time. Smart for sure, but also arrogant, confrontational, inflexible, nearly impossible to get in touch with, and from my experience either really forgetful or else purposefully uncari
hard test
You will learn a lot of interesting biology but if you don't do good in the beginning, stick with it. The class gets easier and more interesting as you go. You might not get the A like you would with another professor but you will learn a lot more. Learn to use the book because he is bad at helping during office hours.
Hard, demanding class, but you learn a lot if you do the work, and study. He teaches in different styles so you get the most out of the lectures and knows his stuff (most of the time). He wasn't a jerk.
great!
I have never worked so hard for a B+ in my life. He likes to play mind games. Good luck!!
Greer's a hard professor, but he will teach you more than anyone else. Do NOT take this class if you're not willing to work. A lot. We lost around 5 people because they couldn't keep up, and that's 5 spots that could have gone to other people. This was an excellent class, possibly the best I've ever taken, but it was NOT easy. Keep that in mind.
I am a little disappointed in the lack of text book only because I think it would help reinforce the information.
This class isn't an easy A but it definitely isn't impossible. Prof. Greer lectures all class but provides good power points needed for his tests. Take good notes and STUDY for the tests, they can be difficult but are simple if you study.
Do you like writing a paper every week after reading 80 pages of a boring book about past societies (such as the anasazi)? then this is the class for you!!! He is a nice guy though.
Don't listen to the other posts. He was the best professor that i have ever had. He made the class very interesting. Yes you have to do a fair amount of work, but if you show up to class it's really easy.
If you show up to class you will do just fine. The tests are only over his lectures so it is a must. Didn't really read the book, just skimmed over the reading to write the weekly reviews which take like 30 minutes at the most. Pretty good professor.
I really enjoyed his class, he gives you plenty of opportunities to work back from a low first exam score. Which your first exam will be difficult, I got a 60 %. But I got help from him and ended up getting an A in the course. Prepare to work hard but he's a great professor.
If you take his class be sure to read the book and do the reviews. He provides you with all the materials to get an A in the class you just have to use them. He gives all the answers to the tests in his lectures, so as long as you make it to the classes you should be fine. It is not a spoon fed class but it is not terribly hard either.
Go to class. You can't get the info without doing so. Do the reading reviews too, if you don't it will bring your grade down. I got 85's onexams by going to class, paying attention, and looking over my notes the night before the exam. He explains things well.
He is an upper level biology teacher and teaches 300 and 400 level classes on top of this one. So he tests you on stuff that isn't part of the bio105 curriculum and it sucks. I just took this for a gen ed and it goes way more in depth than it should. He is a funny guy and all but unless you like biology a lot, its gonna be really hard.
Gary was great!!! I really enjoyed his class and I learned a lot. Im a junior and I thought the class was going to be freshmen's work but it was hard for a 100 level class. If you pay attention in lecture you will do great! Plus it's fun to hear how much he loves the Denver Broncos!
Greer knows his stuff, that's for sure. However, his ego is a little inflated and his exams are very difficult. The topic is interesting and he tries to make it approachable but I think, in the long run, he fails. Too harsh in grading and very stubborn.
Don't expect homework back for at least a 3-4 weeks. Extremely arrogant and not easy to work with. Teaching methods not effective, material not relevant to the class and exam questions.
Greer changed things up and did weekly quizzes instead of exams-NO FINAL! But he is tough! I got an A b/c I studied a lot! He knows his stuff and made me love biology again after class! Id take him again if I needed a class he taught! He comes off as arrogant sometimes but he is actually really cool and make you enjoy his class a lot & lots of EC!
This is advanced population ecology. Gary expects a lot. He lectures well, but course concepts and discussions will be time consuming and volatile. Don't expect to have time to work on your thesis if you take this class because much is demanded of you.
This guy is awesome!
Good teacher, tests are unreasonably difficult and hard to study for but curved. Class is interesting and informative, take really detailed notes and you'll be better off. Funny guy, has a bit of an arrogant streak but is extremely intelligent and really knows his stuff.
Very arrogant while teaching because he is beyond educated in his subject area. I found it difficult to study for the tests because he does not provide any sort of a review, but with other assignments in the grade book the tests did not hurt my grade too much. There was no textbook, assignments came from a novel. Not awful, but not a favorite.
Way too much work for a 100 level class, and tests are way too hard..This guy is EXTREMELY arrogant, causing me to strongly dislike him. Drops f-bomb on occasion in lectures...Acted annoyed when asking for help...and very slanted/biased teaching approach...Mostly I found him very rude when seeking help. Definitely would not take this guy again!!!
He knew the course material, but he was extremely pretentious and not very happy to offer help. He was also very particular and not quick to answer emails. The tests were also very difficult for a 100 level class, and not having a textbook made studying a hassle as well.
As said by many others, he thinks very highly of himself, and often missteps when he tries to connect to other subject matters. He never admits (obvious) mistakes either. A lot of work for a 100 level class. Not recommended for gen eds.
HARD for a 100 level class, most of us were taking it for a gen ed. It is a challenging course, and its very packed. He also requires a lot of reading and responses to a novel. there is no textbook. he's funny and seems helpful, but its still a tough course.
This guy is a riot! he always makes the class fun and interesting, he always knows exactly how to explain something, he always stops to elaborate on confusing topics, and he is always willing to stay after class or meet outside of class to explain further. definitely take this guy if you aren't a biology/science major
Awesome teacher; makes you laugh, does checks in to make sure everyone understands, easy to pass the class if you pay attention and look over the material. Love this class, would recommend to anyone.
You must attend lecture every single day. Powerpoints are online but are useless if you dont attend class and take very detailed notes. Weekly quizzes are much more detailed and specific than what he actually teaches which makes them very difficult. He is full of himself and neglects to take responsibility for his mistakes.
There was extra credit on every quiz and you can use the lectures that he posts online during the quiz. There is really no reason to not pass this class. If you show up, take notes and use them on quizzes, you'll be fine.
Great knowledge of the subjects, great analogies, intriguing lectures, however, the quizzes are pretty tough even with 2 or more people together. WAY too much work for 100 lvl class. Policy report project at the end of the year is equal to a 300 level report. All in all i learned so much from this class but was my hardest class and it was a gen-ed
Professor Greer is a great guy and his lectures are entertaining. He obviously knows his stuff and is passionate about it, but his class is super difficult. I took it as an easy gen ed not expecting it to be this difficult. The weekly quizzes are impossible, even though you can use any resource. I wouldn't recommend if you're not a bio major.
DONT TAKE ANY CLASS W/ GREER. he is absolutely the worst prof possible (unless your goal is to fail the class). he expects everyone to know the same amount of bio that he knows which is completely ridiculous considering the fact that this is a GEN ED course. the weekly quizzes are impossible & he is the TOUGHEST grader i know. PLZ SAVE YOURSELF.
Gary was definitely one of my favorite professors at GVSU. He is easy to talk to and a caring professor. If you put in the work you will do well in this class. Go to his office hours, it will save you. If you have any concerns over the online quizzes and your answers, or any concerns about the lectures, just talk to him. He is very understanding.
Prof Greer was my favorite professor at Grand Valley. I'm not a BIO major and yet i was interested in the material and I found his lectures engaging and educational. If you actually want to learn something, then please take him! If you put in the work and show interest, you'll do fine!
The toughest teacher I've had at Grand Valley, very condescending and proud of how smart he is which doesn't help students to learn when he just spews off vocab that you don't need. In class asks for simply explanations, but tests and quizzes ask for great detail and are graded harshly. Interesting information, but worst instructor I've had overall
Took him for my evolutionary capstone, he is an excellent teacher who truly knows his stuff. His lectures are engaging and I found it easy to stay focused, with many teachers my mind starts to wander from their monotonous lecturing. I highly recommend him, he asks relevant questions and made sure the class understood what he was teaching. Best prof
Gary is an extremely knowledgeable biology professor. In order to succeed in his class you'll need to attend every lecture and take notes on just about everything he says - it will all be relevant at one point or another. Aside from being lecture and note-taking heavy, Gary can be a difficult grader. Hard work will be required, however.
I had Greer for Our Evolving World, and absolutely loved him. His lectures were interesting and was very willing to work with the students on what type of exam we wanted. His assignments were never too difficult, but involved a lot of reading and videos. The material was super interesting and the research project was fun to do. Definitely recommend
He was really passionate about his class but her came off as egotistical most of the time. Don't know something, then get ready to be made a fool of in front of peers because he will make you feel stupid. Tests were challenging and the amount of time he gave you to take it was absurd.
Extremely hard online tests with not enough time to think clearly and answer thoroughly even if you know the info very well. Great lecturer but is fast and very detailed. Make sure you write down EVERYTHING he says because it will be used on the test/lab/homework.
Upon request for more help the instructor would criticize us, students with no background knowledge, that we were not studying "right" or "hard enough". I attended tutoring sessions and study groups on the regular, on top of the hours spent studying in my spare time, only to get an average grade. Would never take a course with this prof again.
He's the Bomb. com! If you have him make sure to ask him about his bear story!!!
fun professor. Had him for Our Evolving World. He's easy to listen to and his lectures are also entertaining. he expects that you're responsible and makes attendance mandatory, but outside that the class is super chill. its a bit of work but if you get it done on time you should do fine.
Professor Greer is an amazing professor. He doesn't offer extra credit and his quizzes can be difficult, but if you attend lectures and you take a visit to his office hours for clarification on things that you do not understand, you'll be fine.
probably the most condescending and egotistical professor i've ever had. he preaches "no student left behind" constantly, and yet ive raised my hand to ask questions only to be ignored on MANY occasions. I sit in the front row so I know this cannot be a coincidence. He has clear favorites and if you want to be paid attention to you better be one.
I would never take a class from this professor again. Nice enough guy but needlessly harsh grader, is very unclear as to what is expected of students, does not give good reexplanations when students are genuinely confused and uses a horrible, disorganized and confusing lecture packet. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Unless you want to be a botanist.
Prof Greer gives lots of assignments but he is totally available to give feedback or offer help if you need it. You have to go to him because he will not reach out to you if you are struggling. He gives motivational pep-talks before each class and makes lectures fun and inspiring. I enjoyed taking his class and most likely will in the future.
Professor Greer is a very knowledgeable guy and expects the class to use technical language in homework and assignments. However, lectures are almost always class discussions on the current material and they are always very laid back. Greer is very approachable and will help in any way he can. Get your work done and you will enjoy this class
Greer is my favorite Prof. I would take him again without a doubt. Lots of online quizzes that are a little hard, but take them with a friend and you will do fine. he says there will be no EC, but he gave 15 points to attend a bio lecture. Every homework assignment and quiz is online. the only thing actually taken in the class is the final.
Greer was an amazing professor. He definitely had a heavy workload and it was hard to study because he didn't have any sort of study guide expect for the final exam review. These setbacks, tough, are completely overshadowed by his hilarious, inspirational lectures. He made introductory biology interesting- somehow. Gary's class is a must take.
Dr. Greer seriously makes biology fun. He holds interesting lectures and has a lecture packet w/ all of the pictures so you don't have to print them. The only grades in the class are quizzes and the final, which are pretty easy if you take good notes. I will note, though, to write down EVERYTHING he says bc it is fair game on quizzes.
Dr. Greer has been the most charismatic and inspirational professor I have ever had. The material can be tough and you absolutely have to pay attention. The second half of the course can be challenging as well. However if you stay on top of things you will get a lot out if this class.
I loved having professor Greer, hes one of my favorite instructors Ive ever had and would totally take him again! I felt like he was the only prof that really cared about the students during quarantine. The class was hard, but completely manageable as long as you put forth the effort. I HIGHLY recommend him!
I took General Biology II over the summer with Dr. Greer and he is the best professor I've ever had. Be prepared to work and study hard in his class. He gave us two attempts on each exam and we were tested heavily on lecture material. Some exams had extra credit which is rare in college courses. His lectures were interesting & he made learning fun.
Professor Greer is easily the best professor I have ever had! He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and always makes his lectures fun, enjoyable, and immersive so you're not just being talked at for 50 minutes straight. Teaches directly from a lecture pack he made himself and does an amazing job explaining everything! Amazing person :)
I would literally take any class if Gary Greer is teaching it. He is one of the most caring and approachable professors I've ever had. Some may disagree, but you have to show up and be engaged for this to be true. If you put in effort, he'll go above and beyond for you
Gary is honestly a really nice guy, but Id rather take Orgo Chem 2x than this class with him. Exams/quizzes are extremely hard and you hardly get any time to do them. One exam he gave us 25 minutes, with each question having MULTIPLE parts. This is the hardest class Ive taken, and least applicable to my career. He expects too much. Dont recommend
Dr. Greer is a nice enough guy but BIO 303 has easily been the hardest class Ive taken so far. The content of this class is super tough as well, so expect to put in a ton of work (15ish hours a week outside of lecture) in order to succeed. Also all of his quizzes/exams are super hard and have not near enough time to complete them.
Great professor. I really enjoyed both HNR 152 and HNR 154 with him. His lectures were always great. My only complaint is that the assignments outside of class took a lot of time. I had to spend more time on his class than any other.
A good professor who likes group work depending on the class. Helpful on papers and willing to answer any questions. He may rub you the wrong way at first but he cares and wants you to succeed. FYI, he does NOT like to record any lectures. I had many nice conversations with him, he likes to make connections w/ you. Work hard and show him you care
As somebody who just needed to take this class as an honor's requirement if you are not interested in biology, evolution, or anything along those lines I advise you to find a different sequence to enroll in, there are many classes that are far more interesting than the New World Odyssey sequence.
Gary is by far the best professor I have ever had. He cares deeply about both his profession and his students. He can grade a bit difficult, but is usually open for revisions or will help you with anything! 100% recommend.
Dr. Greer is awesome and makes the class fun. He expects a lot from you and is very respectable. I struggled in the beginning of this class as it is very tough, but the second half of the semester was much more lax. This is a tough class, but as long as you attend lectures and labs, it is not as challenging as it seems.
He is very vague about assignments and also gives poor grades
Prof Greer is knowledgeable and fun as a person, but hard to please with your classwork. He is vague about assignments in class and brushes them off as if they aren't a big deal, but will proceed to send an email with rigorous requirements for the same work. He is a very harsh grader and almost all work is done outside class.
Gary is a great guy and is really interesting and funny. I liked being in his class, lectures were very engaging and class flew by. But, he is a tough grader, always something to mark down on, which was frustrating at times. It was a good class but also like bad, in a way. Many tears were shed.
He is a great lecturer but good things to say stop there. His expectations are far too high, grading as if we should be experts. This is an honors course, not even a bio course. He does NOT give clear directions for assignments and marks down for criteria not mentioned. He genuinely left me speechless at times with how bad at his job he truly is.
Irresponsible and unclear. Routinely put incorrect instructions in the syllabus and then acted like it was our fault that things were done incorrectly. Extremely tough grader and near impossible to please. This class should not have been as stressful as he made it.
Gary did not put enough effort into preparing this course before it was offered to students. The syllabus was very clearly copy-pasted from previous courses, as were his sparse PowerPoints. Tears were shed over his lack of guidance or clear expectations, and he makes it seem as though quantity > quality every time. Take any other prof please.
The content of the class is really interesting and the lectures are easy to follow. He does a pretty good job at breaking the content down so the students understand what he is saying. The amount of work is pretty typical. His syllabus is not always clear and has a strong interest in what he teaches.
He spent a lot of time lecturing in class. Lectures were very technical and I often found it difficult to pay attention as it wasn't always super interesting. He only graded every three assignments and often isn't clear about expectations. He expects high-quality work and expects a great amount of time to be put into the class.
Gary is an amazing professor and person. He cares deeply about what he teaches and his students. His class prepared me for college, and while it may be tough, it was absolutely worth my time. His lectures are great. If you don't like Gary, that's a "you" problem lol. 100/10 recommend.
Gary's class was really challenging, but I got a lot out of it. There was a lot of reading and homework, I probably spent about 4-8 hours per assignment.
Prof. Greer knows a lot and is a really great lecturer, but his expectation on assignments can be really unclear. His syllabus had some errors in it but he seemed to think that it was perfect, and it caused a lot of issues. Really tough grader and it was frustrating when the expectations weren't as clear as he thought that they were.
Avoid at all costs if taking him for an honors course. Incredibly hard grader, especially for essays. Gives very vague instructions and penalizes you for not assuming his guidelines. Also encourages debate but will talk over you and not listen to any of your arguments. Do not take if you will have to write in the class.
One of the most loving and intelligent people I have ever met. You can tell he loves what he does and truly cares about his students. The class can be difficult at points but he provides plenty of support and will help you through.
I could never say anything that could accurately communicate how wonderful Prof. Greer is. I would take any class this man taught, regardless of the topic. He is one of the most intelligent, passionate, and articulate people I have ever met. He cares deeply and wants nothing but for the best for his students in his class and the world. 10/10
