good teacher, assigns a lot of homework, tests are challenging, but you will know the subject well.
Treated us like we were in Elementary school! Very hard to talk to and his grading system for projects left me frustrated. I worked hard and got a good grade but it was very frustrating.
G squared.. as we like to call him, is awesome. Gary is very helpful, very smart, and teaches the material well. though his tests and quizzes arent always the easiest
He didnt ever want to help me.
never wanted to help or teach. The students taught the whole class and he never helped us.
he was ok, i was very intiminated by him, and his teaching process was to quick
How can you not like this guy?
This guy was awesome. He told a lot of cheezy jokes while teaching his math. He did plenty of examples to help students prepare for tests.
This is the best math teacher I've EVER had. He was always there to help me and made lectures interesting with his mild humor. Tests and quizzes were fair. I would recommend him to anyone.
Great teacher, knows his stuff. Idiots will dislike him because he actually expects his students to learn mathematical concepts. If you want to understand math in any REAL way he is great. His lukewarm intensity is also quite entertaining.
He is a very good explainer
Mr. Grohs was honestly the best teacher I've ever had. His teaching style was very structured and efficient. He was always willing to help me, no matter how many times I bugged him. I would recommend this teacher to anyone who wants a clear understanding of algebra.
HILARIOUS! But yea..I barley got a C. I liked him though..never collected hw...I don't know if that is good or bad.
Hard but fair if he see you make an effort. I hated math but he was always available for explanations, even a few minutes before class. He was very encouraging when I felt bad about a grade and I eventually began to enjoy the class. I got A's! He was funny in a technical way and now I have a complete grasp of algebra. I'm not scared of math!!
This teacher is pretty goodlooking!

A very good teacher. Can be really funny at times. A very easy class to pass because everything he teaches is basic and understandable.
Class was difficult at first has a weird teacher style and is pretty difficult. wouldnt round my grade up from an 89.9
Weird teaching style and doesnt explain things every well. He is a very smart man and knows what hes talking about but he doesnt have the ability to explain it. Do not take him as a teacher unless you are good at math and can it to teach yourself.
Very good teacher, but can be difficult. He explains things well, but expects work out of the class. If you do all your homework and pay attention in class, its pretty easy to pass.
Very bad teacher. He doesn't answer your questions and he expects you to already know every thing he's teaching. Hated this class!!!
some of these comments are a little harsh. no need for name calling. This professor is one of the sweetest, most intelligent people I've ever met. he teaches to a more advanced audience, so if you don't have your basics down don't bother taking him.. helpful, always answers questions. DON'T fall behind on the hmwrk because you will be buried alive!
His class is the best I have never had, and he is a great teacher because I have learned more than any class I have taken. He has great sense of humour and makes class laugh a lot. He expects me to learn something and is always helpful when I ask question. He is smart man and knows what he is teaching, and is certainly not a teacher only gives you
good teacher. clear instruction, helpful, and funny sometimes. If you want get something from the class but only grade, take him. certainly he will not pass you if you don't do anything after lessones
He is a good college level teacher, does not baby sits students but is helpful. I am losing respect to this site due to some students’ immaturity and ingratitude. It it a site for people to get information of finding good teachers depending upon the definition of good, but a site of venting anger, frustration and immaturity. Be grown or be home!!
I found this teacher to be very difficult. He goes through material very fast. Almost too fast to take notes. He makes a lot of assumptions on what you know unless you say differently. Tests are difficult, theory questions, and difficult problems. Advice: Do not fall behind on HW. Know your definitions (memorize word for word), ASK QUESTIONS!
worst professor!
Easily the best math teacher at ECC. everything he explained, he did it thoroughly and left out little to no info. his tests and quizzes can be tough, but his grading is justified. if you take your studies seriously, you should have no problem with him. he prepares you well - i got a B in his class, but went ahead to calc 2 and got an A
He was a great teacher. Don't miss his class because it's easy to fall behind. Nobody can read your mind so unless you speak up... he'll never know your having a difficult time. He is willing to do what it takes to help you through the course. He moves through material quickly, but is ALWAYS willing to help! He's a great teacher!!
Teacher was extremley hard on students. I felt like he didn't care much about how the students felt or issues students could have outside of school.
Please do not take him.he is worst.too much hard , pain in butt
good teacher. Class was kinda hard but he is willing to help. Just study for test and you will be fine.
He expected us to know everything on the first day and he kept on moving with the sections and we would become very lost. And when we took tests there would be only like 15 problems worth 100 pts so it made it real easy to fail if you had just a couple wrong
Pretty difficult teacher. He expects people to remember everything they learned in previous math classes. His homework for College Algebra is online. Lot's of quizzes He is NOT understanding about personal situations. Even family members funerals! He thinks his class trumphs your other classes and social life; only take if you like a challenge!
He might be hard on students and probably many of them will drop out right away. But at the end you can get an A or B but you do need to be on the book and practicing a lot by your self
Lets just say very challenging, not impossible though. If you enjoy mathmatics then take him. If you just want math to be a breeze then not highly recommended
The class was very hard from the beginning, he expects the class to retain all the information from previous years and also expects you to catch onto the methods he uses right away. He gives tests and quizzes out every week making a big impact on your overall grade. He is not helpful when you ask for him to help you outside or in class.
Organized and fairly helpful, explains things clearly. He is a good teacher but wants dedication. Do not expect sympathy if you skip class or don't do homework.
Makes you work for your grade, tough class but it isnt impossible. willing to help outside of class but you have to ask. must spend time outside of class and homework practicing.
He is not the teacher to take if you want to just coast by and get a C. If you put in the effort and enjoy the subject, you will leave his class with a better understanding than you would get from most other teachers.
This professor is very smart and helpful if you seriously desire to learn and grow your mathematical foundation. He expects you to read the text and do the homework and considers the learning process a partnership between teacher and learner. If you want to pass and get easy credit by passively sitting there dont take him.
Fantastic teacher, learned so much from his lectures. Recommend this teacher, but NOT an easy A class. Put the work in, and it will pay off. He is more than willing to help you.
Great teacher and a great guy. He went very slow and was very thorough and understanding to anyones needs. The homework was all on MathXL and was easy and taught you a lot at the same time. His tests were very fair and he allowed days before each test for lectures to review everything. Very fair and very good teacher.
A hybrid class which demands outside of class completion of homework and watching videos. Lectures much better than the videos as I depended upon them to get me through the course. Professor Grohs is really caring and will go the extra mile if you are doing your part. Not a class to expect to pass if you just go there to sit and not be active.
Extremely hard, He expects you to catch on with the methods he uses. Challenging class.
if you're not good at math and dont want to learn his own way of solving poblems dont take him.He flies through lectures and makes you feel stupid if you ask the wrong question. If you need a slow paced teacher that teaches how to solve problems the way you've always been taught then stay away.
This guy is excellent and fair. I signed up for a hybrid course knowing it is fast paced and cant complain. I barely passed with a C but I did not do all the homework. Students in the class did not seem to care and often came to class with no questions and no interest or concern about the course. Not sure they expect if they put nothing into it.
If you have any questions or just don't understand the material, he WILL make you feel dumb and worthless. He goes through lectures extremely fast. If you don't say what you specifically mean, he will cop an attitude and not answer your question. If you learn better on your own and can tune him out, take this class.
Math 112 is a difficult subject to begin with. He is very thorough when lecturing. There's homework everyday and a quiz at least once a week. He is very fair, and if you really pay attention, everything will seem fairly easy. I enjoyed his class and would recomend him to anyone who actually wants to learn.
He assigned optional homework out of the book every night but you better believe you should do it if you want to pass at all!
ok teacher if you like to be self taught.. does not teach much in class and expects everyone to already know as much math as him
Took his hybrid class which is ok if you're self-disciplined to teach yourself with all the available resources that are given. Very fair teacher, wants you to succeed. Do ALL your homework, it counts as 1 exam grade in the end!
Intelligent. Take him if you want to have a professional career some day.
I took professor Grohs because I heard students saying that he is fair and knowledgeable, teaches you how to study math, encourages you to put education at a high priority in your life and so far it has all been true. Great teacher but you will need to do homework! Super sense of humor makes class fun.
He was good at explaining the material but the quizzes and tests are all short answer which makes it very hard. The quizzes are based off of the homework from that week but the tests are a lot harder. Need to make sure you stay on top of your homework and have a lot of time on your hands. Overall he was not a horrible teacher but fast pass
If you are not naturally good in calculus, DO NOT TAKE HIM. His quizzes are based off of HW, but his tests questions are 10x harder than what you will study for homework. Incredibly hard grader, he will not give partial credit. A little unapproachable too, seems to make you feel stupid if you ask a question.
Total boss. Incredibly helpful, very instructive, great teacher in every way. His expectations are high, and he has little pity for those who don't do their work and subsequently fail the tests, but it's worth the effort to do well. One can tell that he seriously cares and enjoys math, and I think that's great. He also has a decent sense of humor.
He was an okay teacher. I had great math teachers in high school, which helped a lot. Before tests, he gives you a review day and he loves when you go up to him and ask as many questions as you'd like. He makes you feel stupid at times, but as long as you keep up with the online homework and ask questions you'll do fine! I got an A.
Best professor I've had so far. His class is not easy and he sets very high expectations. However he's very helpful and sincerely wants us to do good. Calc was my worst subject but he pushed me to do well in his class. Deifinitely take his class if you value hard work and a good sense of humor.
Wow, what an incredible experience taking Grohs class. I never enjoyed math as much as I do now because he made it so interesting. I worked harder than in other math classes at ECC but I also learned a lot more. I got my monies worth and more. I wasnt going to take more math but now i am planning on taking calc II.
He is the best calc person i have ever known.
Professor Grohs is a very knowledgeable individual in mathematics. It is better to take his class if math is your strong suit and/or you have a strong foundation. If you have your basics down, he can show very useful shortcuts. He has high standards so don't expect to pass without putting an honest effort into the class. Be sure to ask questions!!
He is not a helpful teacher . He will rush with every example and at the end say "DONE" as if we were math Genius like him. He doesn't explain step by step what he does. Homework everyday and his tests are kinds hard. Very high expectations of everyone
I think that college algebra was probably one of the best math classes I have taken. He does a good job on teaching. To me individually, he was always there to answer questions. I hate math and I am very bad at it but I actually achieved a B in his class.. he was overall great
Easy to get a high A on homework, quizzes aren't difficult, test aren't too complicated but you need to know the material. Good teacher, can rush at times. But as long as you ask he will help, especially the class before the test.
I took calc first semester right out of high school and found it awesome and a great challenge unlike my high school classes where I did not do a thing. I learned math and how to study at the college level so feel this was a good first class.
Mr. Grohs was very easy, very fair, and nice. I took this class online thinking it be easy but i don't learn very well without a teacher. If you are a good teacher to yourself take this class. If not than i don't recommended it.
Professor Grohs is extremely smart. Sometimes he goes through the lesson a bit quickly but he is always open to anyone coming to him with questions. He went above and beyond to help me out and he is very nice. His course is a little tough but I think he gives you a better understanding of the material than other instructors.
-good if you have a background in calc -bad if you don't have a background in calc -hw every night out of the book -sometimes he gave group quizzes -sometimes he curved test scores -approachable and will help you if you ask -ask questions and participate-he likes that -one of the hardest classes I've taken -if you like calc take him
I enjoyed the class throughout the semester and he was my favorite professor. The class is very demanding, you have homework everyday from "MyMathLab", anywhere from 10-45 problems a night. His tests can be challenging if you don't know the material inside and out. He sometimes does go too fast in his lecturers but he is very very personable.
Great professor. Very helpful. curves tests.
Good guy. Make sure you bring in your questions otherwise he will get mad fast. He curves everyone's test grades and will structure the class in differently throughout the semester for the benefit of the students.
Professor Grohs is everything you can ask for in a math teacher. He's helpful and very respectful. He explains subjects pretty quickly and it can be hard to follow along sometimes. However, he's always more than willing to stop for questions and rewind the lecture if you're left dazed and confused. I'm taking his class again this semester.
He goes into depth when explaining why we do mathematical operations. Very helpful but does go fairly quickly.
I took his hybrid class, and it wasn't too difficult. He is there to help, and wants you to pass. A few lame jokes here and there, but an overall good guy.
I took his hybrid class and loved it. You have to be very dedicated in a hybrid class because you have to complete the lessons on your own and class time is used to cover any issues you encountered. He wants his students to pass and is always willing to help. I loved his class and I have always struggled with math.
Get your monies worth by taking this guy and be prepared to do homework.
took his hybrid class and it was fairly easy. never used the textbook. and is very lenient with homework. if you ask for an extension you'll most likely get it. cracks lame jokes sometimes but explains everything really well.
He's a pretty good teacher, but it's like every other math class, you either know it or you don't. We ended up taking around 15 quizzes and 7 tests. He only counts the top 6 tests and the top 10 quizzes, so if you struggle with a concept, it might get dropped! He tends to do plenty of curving.
Mr. Grohs is a great professor. He's good at explaining but can be fast-paced. Grades are based off of MyMathLab homework, the average of the best 10 quizzes, and 5-6 exams. MyMathLab was pretty demanding but it's worth it if you want to do well on his quizzes and exams. You should do fine if you keep up with the homework.
I took the hybrid 098 class and he was very easy to understand. He gave you his expectations from day one and if you do the homework (it's a lot) you will pass! The tests questions and the homework questions are similar. He drops the lowest test score and quiz grade. If you meed more time to complete the homework just ask him!
Listen, chances are that if you are looking at calc-professors you are more than likely going to be a STEM-Major. If you are looking for something that is easy are you really progressing in your studies? This teacher will make you think for yourself, and will not hold your hand throughout the semester. If you want to learn Calculus, take him.
Everything is done on MyMathLab, hence; ACCESS CODE. He teaches way too fast and doesn't clarify the questions asked thoroughly. I was in MTH98 with him and picked his class again. I don't know why I did, because I remembered how much work I put into it!
Lectures were rushed and unorganized. Quizzes/tests don't really match up with what's in the book. Grades harshly and doesn't give partial credit. Loads of homework (not graded), but they are mostly odd-numbered. Work and answers are on CalcChat. Do not expect to learn much from him. You have to teach yourself by reading the book and using Google.
I really appreciated how much he cared for his students. Even though I wan't doing so well in the class, he still told me to pursue engineering. He made sure that I was able to see him out of class to review quizzes and tests if I missed the day he passed them back. He didn't mind helping me with questions from past materials. He is one of the best
You will be handed a ridiculous amount of homework that is worth almost half of your grade, and he gives a lot of exams. Rarely lectures on anything, and he will tell you to go to tutoring if you ask for help.
I took this class in the summer and got an A only because I busted my butt to study and teach myself the material from online since going to class was a waste. He doesn't explain the material effectively (skips steps in problems) or goes too fast with explaining steps. If you work & want to take this class in the summer, take a different teacher.
Worst professor i have encountered. i had to go to orientation for NIU on the same day of a test and sent him an email if he could accommodate for that day. he replied saying orientation is not a good enough reason to miss class and was forced to take a zero on the test. he also puts the class down by telling everyone they will not pass.
I had a very difficult time in this professors class. He moves extremely quick with material, so if you have any questions about the material make sure you ask about it right then and there. If you start to fall behind you might want to consider dropping the class. The homework is all online so you have to have an access code.
I previously took him for MTH112 and he was a great teacher for that class. I decided it would be the same deal for MTH190 but that wasn't the case. He ended up confusing me on how he wanted on to solve problems. I basically was teaching myself the material before I ended up dropping the class. I wouldn't recommend taking him for Calculus.
Grohs was a decent guy, but he expected a lot from his students in that you had to provoke him to teach. He wouldn't lecture unless someone asked a specific question, and then his answers were rushed. In his hybrid class, if you do the work and do a decent job, you don't have to attend class and you may work ahead. Saved a lot on gas money.
First day of class he gave a few examples of what our first homework was going to look like but didn't really teach the step by step process. He was very nice about answering any questions but he is definitely expecting you to have a math background when starting his class which was not my case. I haven't had math in years. Not the professor for me
He explains everything way too fast and does Little to help others specially when you don't understand something
Tried to get notes when i had to go out of town and he didn't even respond. I didn't end up passing his class by one percent and i asked If it was possible to open up the homework while i was out of town so i wouldn't get behind and he said the whole class had to agree on it.
Very smart, very lenient, makes it very easy to pass College Algebra. I often talk to him before class and give him feedback on if we're ready for any quizzes and he has always given us more time to learn the material. He is very friendly and will work with you to help you pass! He makes it very east to pass if you just show up and do the homework!
This teacher is awful. If you need help, don't bother asking because he doesn't help. He even kicks out at least three students per semester for just leaving class to use the bathroom. The homework load is unbelievably high, like five assignments per night. I've never once had a teacher that gives out this much. Be prepared to be working until 3AM.
Grohs is a very smart man who is passionate about what he teaches. His class takes up plenty of time outside of class, but if you do the homework assignments, study, and attend class, you should be able to do well on exams. Grohs is always willing to meet with you for his office hours and help you out if a problem is not clear. Don't miss class!!!
THIS PROFESSOR IS A NICE GUY BUT HIS CLASS IS VERY HARD. I STUDIED EVERYDAY, SEEK TUTORING EVERYDAY, AND I MET WITH MY STUDY GROUP EVERYDAY. WHAT YOU DO FOR HOMEWORK AND QUIZES, NOTHING IS SIMILAR ON THE EXAMS. CLASS STARTED WITH 28 STUDENTS, BY THE END OF THE SEMESTER IT WAS DOWN TO 9. HIS COURSE IS VERY VERY HARD. TEACHING STYLE SUCKS!!!!!
Get real about your future and take classes to learn or live in a dream world, be a loser and work as a cashier at Walmart for the rest of your life.
Withdrew because I couldnt keep up with all the homework. It was ALOT. So dont slack off on the homework not even for one day. Stay ahead of it actually. Youll grind the homework a bit for one day but itll be worth it to stay ahead. Aside from that hes a very fair professor. He gives you a lot of help on problems. Just be ready to study a lot
Take his class if you want to go home and teach yourself 80% of the material. He rarely ever helps someone when they have a question
Isnt the best. Barely teachers the criteria needed to learn and moves on to a different section too fast, heavy homework, lots of quizzes and tests. Dont recommend.
I am an A student and I am struggling to keep a B in this class. The amount of homework is insane! It is nearly impossible to have a job and take another class while taking this class. His lectures are NOT thorough AT ALL. It's become so bad, I try to block him out so I can avoid getting confused. Just don't take this class. Please.
Not an easy teacher but knows his stuff and gives clear expectations.
He doesnt teach you anything
The absolute worse professor at ECC. He doesnt teach at all. Everything is done online and the homework is UNREAL. Ridiculous how this man is teaching since all he does in class is hw problems and you watch videos on my MathLab to learn everything on your own. Hybrid class was the hardest thing Ive done I ended up withdrawing.
He's rude and degrading to students. He's dismissed health issues students have mentioned that haven't been able to receive disability services and has called other students out for being anorexic due to how skinny they are and if you're quiet in his class he has said "Don't you ever speak?"
He is a very smart professor, he knows his stuff but he's not the best at explaining. He moves very fast and often finishes his lessons after 20 minutes but, he does take time during class to go over any questions we have. He also welcomes us to go visit him during his office hours to get extra help.
Great dad jokes! Spent most of my time in the torturing center to fully understand concepts, but if you are a quick learner it will be easy. Kinda sarcastic with answering your questions, come off rude, but he gives good feed back after test and quizzes. He is a teacher you want to take if you are considering science based jobs, dont if not.
He was horrible at teaching, if you had a question about a subject, he would make you feel like an idiot and never really answered the question. He wasnt helpful with his lectures and went through material pretty quickly. The homework load was too much and difficult to do when youre confused on the subject. He never replied any emails I sent him.
Made mathematical concepts that I used to know more confusing and made newer concepts even more confusing. He sarcastically answers questions, brings a dark energy to the room and overall just not a good teacher. Although hes accessible for extra help, hes just not someone that can help you unless youre a somewhat gifted math student.
Hes very strict about little things that most other teachers dont worry about such as not going to the bathroom during his lectures. He will probably do one example of a problem and then leave the rest to you, so I found myself relying on MyMath Lab and the tutors to teach me the material. Not a good pick if you dont feel like teaching yourself.
He is a very hard teacher, not easy to follow and most students end up dropping his class. Refers a lot to Math 98 a lot, so if you didn't take Math 98 it's that much harder.
Absolutely terrible teacher, do NOT take him.
WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD! Horrible at explaining lessons how and how to solve problems. Assigned INSANE amounts of homework. Made me and about half the class uncomfortable/scared to ask questions. Made ridiculing/sarcastic comments to a classmate for being a couple minutes late. Didnt comply with a classmates disability accommodation paperwork
