Bad material, boring professor. He reads to us most of the class, from books we are assigned to read on our own. He doesn't know anyones name, does't take attendence or allow class participation. He never keeps us the whole class. If you like to be read to, take the class. FYI 2 required papers
If you want an easy A this is your class!! this guy doesn't care at all if you read, and he will read the books to the class.. so if you don't read you will find out at class anyway. Tests are not hard and only 2 papers are required.
Easy class, two papers and you don't really have to read. Very boring, all he does is read a book to you in class. Loves the word "ummmm"
Decent Prof. It can be boring, but it can be fun too. Allows some participation, and makes jokes sometimes that are funny. 3 papers and easy exams. He's a sharp dresser too. I think I'd take another class with him.
This guy is bright; he's concerned for his students; and he's really hot. Maybe it's just me, but I think he is one of the best teachers I've ever had.
The best teacher to take for western lit, you never have to go to class, he doesn't know who you are anyways, EASY A, just write the two papers and take the exams ... all you have to know is the character list from spark notes...VERY NICE GUY
good guy. fair grader. i learned a lot, but the classes can be boring sometimes.
very boring but very easy. lil funny sometimes and pretty accomodating
Easy for the most part, tends to talk alot, but is def. worth it. Great humor! Dresses like he's running for president or something
I'll bet if I went up to Prof. Grund tomorrow, he wouldn't know my name. I'd bet GOOD money on that. He's brilliant and can read Shakespeare beautifully, but he's one of the most boring and disinterested professors I've ever encountered. I'd never take him again. Ever. Not that he'd notice.

Very nice man. Very smart man. He does read from the text too much (it's usually preceeded by a look up at the class and a double finger-tap on the book and "ummm...take a look here"). He is also too heavily New Critical. I am still glad I had him.
I love Grund. I've had him for many other classes and I always learn a lot. He's very fair on grading & really lets you express your interests when it comes to writing papers. Extremly smart on a variety of subjects, definetly someone you could turn to for help on basically any thing, including your other classes. Highly recomended
He's checked out. He is not interested in the student as much as the material. An easy A, but boring as a rice cake.
Get ready to draw. You will be so bored in this class - you could even bring in play-dough... it has happened.. trust me! He is an easy grader though... at least on exams
Grund is so awesome. The entire class was 6 (2 page) papers that you can hand in whenever you want. And then you can re-hand them in until you get an A. Class is let out early every single time. You don't have to take notes or buy the book, but you do have to have a brain. You just critcize peoples papers. An extremely smart, very clear professor.
Great teacher. Made Shakespeare's tradegies fun and interesting. He is a smart man, really knows his stuff. He is a pretty easy going teacher, though his exams can be a little challenging. Still got an A- in the course though.
Very enjoyable class, easy to understand, lets class out early almost every day
boring but easy guy. in class we talk and talk and talk. that is all we do.
Well, where do i begin, he looks like steve martin. hes boring boring boring but if you show up for the exams and hand in the papers your fine. he doesn't take attendence. I showed up for class i think about three times and got a B-. hes just really boring
Presents a fascinating social, political, and religious history of the period and demonstrates a contagious enthusiam for the subject presented
Great teacher. As long as you read the books you'll do fine. Tests are very easy. Very fair.
He is fascinating. I could listen to him all day. The most brilliant professor in the English dept. He is a Harvard grad and everything a professor should be. In fact, he must bored out of his mind when he looks around the classroom at the audience he has to teach.

Grund is one of my fav. professors in the Eng Dept. He is funny and can relate the topic to things the students are actually interested in. He tries to encourage students to open thier minds and think differently. STudy for exams and hand in papers and you are all set.
Fantastic professor. Knows a lot about the subject, provides useful information, fair grader. I would definitely recommend him.
Pretty alright class. Not hard at all. A few short papers. Tests are straightforward, he tells you ahead of time what to study for. Homework isn't bad, just reading once or twice a week. Does a lot of discussion in class, though not mandatory. Never takes attendance.
I love Grund more than ANYTHING. People who don't like this class are idiots. I have taken 2 classes, and pan to take more. He is so smart and funny.
ABSOLUTLY AMAZING! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Funny Guy who is straight forward. Highly recommend his class to anyone for the Core 1. There are only three easy exams and two short papers, overall I got a B+ for the semester and hardly went to class. Cool Guy
I recommend taking this professor. He is straight forward reviews the required reading material for the tests and essays.
very easy going guy with an ok sense of humor. throws in little jokes here and there to break up discussion. "uuuuhhhhmmmm" is his favorite statement. uses the books in class; read the books and you will be fine. fair grader and there for help if you need him. lets class out early quite often.
Professor Grund is very dry. He can be funny from time to time and tries to be but can fail. His essay grading can be tough and he can be very subjective and set in his ways. If you dont do what he wants, you may not do well. His tests are pretty easy if you study. And mainly, he WILL NOT give an A, an A- at most on any assignment. Overall, he was
very easy, funny guy, gives out B's a lot, only downside is that rather than have a discussion he spends most of the class reading the reading assignment outloud
I've taken many courses with Professor Grund. Uses the book as a tool. He doesn't factor attendance, very laid back. It's your money. Around for help always in person or email. So much that I made him my academic advisor! you can walk away from any of his classes with knowledge of the subject. take him, you won't regret it!
The guy knows everything ever and is incredibly witty so that helps the boring subject matter from making you hurt yourself. Take!
Funny, funny, funny!! His classes are very enjoyable. Fair grader, laidback, easygoing. Goes over the readings in class to help you better understand the text. Highly recommended.
First RIC professor I ever had. Good class. Simple assignments. Good discussions.
3rd time taking his classes. Class is kind of boring, makes jokes here and there. Extremely smart guy. Class isnt really mandatory so you can afford to skip it plenty. Tells you ahead of time how exams will be structured. Papers are most based on something that interests you. Can rewrite. Helps you if you need it. Lenient, very fair grader, cool guy
Grund is a good professor. The workload was a reasonable amount, and exams were straightforward. Easy class. He's not a stickler on attendance. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Gary Grund is by far the best English professor I've had. He's very smart, and very funny! His class is so interesting and he keeps his students engaged. The workload is easy, and he's a reasonable grader. I'm taking a class with him next semester, and I can't wait. He's awesome, take a class with him.
Professor Grund is a fair easy going teacher that gets to the point, no fluff. His class on business writing provides students a skill set that is a necessity for the work environment. I know this will be helpful for me in the future, and i highly recommend the class for everyone.
had him for summer session. by far the best english teacher ive ever had. His exams are easy with short id's and essay questions that are really broad. good lectures which are what the exams are pretty based on. usually ends class an hour early. really easy professor!
Most intelligent professor in the English dept. Doesn't force students to parrot the liberal agenda.
Great teacher and cool guy. Professor Grund knows his stuff and is super patient with students butchering the Latin language.
Extremely boring. He will put you to sleep. Feedback on papers doesn't help you become a better writer.Doesn't have a good grading system. If you don't agree with what he says than don't expect a good grade in this class. Tests are easy though.
Gary is not boring...he is dry at times but what professor isn't. He's not going to hold your hand, but if you make appointments to see him he will clear up any problems you have. Allows re-writes so you prgoress as a writer and learn from your mistakes. As the gateway to the ENG major his 201 class arms you with the tools to succeed further on.
truly awful
Nice guy overall, wants people to succeed but isn't very clear as to what he wants for papers, tests, etc. Expects you to read his mind sometimes. Put exactly what you have in your notes on your tests and papers and you'll be fine. Take notes on what he says, only writes few things on the board. Funny, laid back, and nice guy. Would recommend.
Doesn't seem to care if you attend class or not. Exams are VERY easy and all the same, 5 short IDs & 2 essays. You don't have to read the texts before class because he pretty much reads them to you. Pretty bland but a nice guy!
awesome professor tries to be funny most of the time it works...basically papers and if you dont like the grade ur able to rewrite grading system is basically weighted
Extremely boring! Talks for the full two hours. Doesn't care if you attend class. Don't buy the book, read spark notes and you'll be fine.
Prof. Grund is awesome. He teaches you exactly what you need in order to score well on your work. He even allows you to rewrite your work so you can get the best grade possible. He keeps class entertaining and lets class out as soon as all the material is covered.
Enjoyed the class.
Took this class in the summer and it was AWESOME! Only had to come to class once a week and it was supposed to be a Mon-Thurs class. On mondays the whole class met and on Tues,Wed, or Thurs you had to come in for 10 min to talk about your paper w/ him in his office. You are able to rewrite all papers for a better grade. Received an A in the class.
Great professor! Easy and pleasant A. Three papers and three exams; you can rewrite the papers however many times you want (he's an easy grader anyway) and the exams are terms, ID and essay, and really easy. Funny! Good discussions. Will take again if possible : ))
Great Professor. Class requirements were clearly stated. As long as one reads the assigned texts and takes proper notes, the midterm and final is relatively easy. Would take another course with him again. On a more shallow note, I must say that he has a great voice, always dresses sharply, and is rather handsome.
Great teacher. No hidden messages or agendas. Crystal clear in instructions. Good person too. I had a lot of good laughs in the class. He makes English and writing a lot more fun
highly reccommended! he lets you rewrite your papers to get a better grade. He aims to make you a great writer
Relatively painless class. If you read the poems, stories, plays you'll be fine.Three 3-4 page double spaced papers. He lets you revise and hand in again.Exams are a few definitions and short essay.Bought three books, just used the main lit book.Glossary and MLA books not used.Grund is funny and sometimes lets class out early.
One of the smartest arts and science faculty, and one of the few English faculty without a pc ideological axe to grind. A perfect gentleman, very fair, teaches with clarity.
It took me a few subjects to find a good English Literature class for me. Professor Grund exceeded expectations. Great professor, clear, Very fair grader. Lets you rewrite your essays for a higher grade. Exams are very straightforward and if you listen and try to understand concepts, easy A. I would take another class with him if I needed to!
Boring. It's as he's teaching himself. He sees no one is interested but just talks the entire two hours. Very monotone. You will do the reading and then hear what you just read all over again in monotone. Tests are hard, a lot of papers.
Nice man, super knowledgeable, very patient, easy A. Unfortunately, he lectures too much without encouraging class participation, but if you skip class you miss terms that might be on the tests. I learned a lot, but also had to fight to stay awake. I would recommend him, but I would suggest that you carefully choose a few strategic days to skip.
Voice is monotone. I suggest you keep a detailed record of what grades you have earned because he will hold participation and attendance against you. Even though he keeps no record of attendance and does not encourage participation. He talks and talks so if you plan on passing I suggest you bring shots of espresso with you to class.
Grund has a likeable personality, but it is often hard to stay awake because the material is SO boring. His exams are very easy, he gives 3 and you have 2 papers, also very easy. He requires a lot of texts but don't worry, he doesn't make u read the whole thing. Never takes attendance. And always lets you out early. Fair grader.
A brilliant instructor with an endless wealth of knowledge. He's old school--no politics, biases, causes to preach; he comes to teach. He tends to lecture a lot, and sometimes they're tedious, but he has a lot to share, more than any other professor I've seen. Tests are demanding, class participation is encouraged, and the atmosphere is friendly.
Three tests and two 3-4 page essays, everything is from the course material. He assigns a lot of reading but he goes over all of it in class, sometimes even twice. He is monotone and the subject is boring, but he is a fair graders and the work isn't to hard. He does know what he is talking about and doesn't expect you to teach yourself.
Boring. Talks all class about nonsense that doesn't relate to the actual literature. His exams are tough. Has you read 50+ poems and expects you to identify the poet and title of 5 poems for an exam. Let you use your book for the second half of exam though. Easy grader on essays. Let's class out early most of the time.
He is very nice but his classes are very boring. He just talks + goes on about the readings that you are required to do. I skipped basically half the semester + passed with an A-. All you gotta do is make sure you read the books or find them online before the exam and your solid. Make sure you ask ?'s about the papers. He isn't specific about them.
Took for summer. The material is boring, but the classwork not bad. Assigns 1 paper for each class and let's you rewrite as much as you want for a better grade. Very candid professor, if I had to take another writing course, I would take it with him. Bring a coffee... he does like the read directly from the book for long stints.
If you read all of the material then you should do good. In class he goes over what you should have read for homework. If you don't read the material, then take good notes and you will still do good. Anything he writes on the board write down. Exams are decent. As long as you are reading and taking notes you will do good. Class was a little boring
never takes attendance and always out over half an hour early. a lot of reading, but just spaknote them for the tests. i missed half of the classes and got a B+. he's a fair grader on papers and tests, but makes an identify section where you have to say what poem a passage is from. very difficult, not sure how anyone got those correct.
Extremely boring, sometimes talks about the same thing over and over again Doesn't give clear directions on writing essays and doesn't have grading system, grades papers however he wants to, with almost no feedback. he doesn't take attendance and is not hard grader if he was clearer on assignments would be pretty easy class
It's really hard to pay attention- he sits at his desk and lectures the entire class. There's 2 papers and 3 tests - the tests were really hard, requiring that you basically memorize everything you've read so you can recognize a random paragraph on the test. Attendance not mandatory but you'll do better if you go. Nice guy, not so great teacher.
Really smart man and knows what he is talking about but his lectures are long and boring. Participation is not required, I never went and still recieved an A; anyone looking for a easy grade, take his course!
Don't think we ever stayed the entire scheduled time, always got out of class at least 30mins early. Material was explained thoroughly in class, you can get by barely reading any of the books or articles. Three exams and two papers, easily graded.
I'm so glad I had this professor. He's old and a bit mono-toned, but class was relaxing and you did't need to do much. Exams were straight forward with barely any studying at all. He always lets you go early and always seems to be on your side.
Avoid this Professor at all cost. He is late to every class. He the most arrogant Professor I've encountered here at RIC. The stories you will ready are interesting enough, but his lectures are truly that. He talks to you for 60 or so minutes and your done. Little or none interaction with the class. Just avoid him and save yourself some stress.
Take this as a summer class if you can cuz it's easier. I got an A after a few weeks. Saves you time and less papers. No exams just essays. He's easy and nice. But old and boring. Let's you leave early though.
Does not provide rubric or clear grading criteria on papers, however gives you a chance to re-do your paper. His exams are pretty easy/straightforward. Attendance is not mandatory, going to his class is important if you have not read the assigned test, it also helps you with the in class essays on exams. He doesn't take notes on board so be ready.
Exams are writing intensive and are completely reading based. Attendance isn't required but he discusses reading very in depth during lectures which are perfect if you're behind on reading or just don't read assigned texts at all.
Heavy lecturer. You don't need to do the readings because he gives the summary and analysis of the entire readings in class the next day. No homework, no participation, no attendance taken. Also, if you miss class on the day of the exam, he will allow you to take it in the library, unsupervised, deducting no points. Only 3 exams and 3 short papers.
Very lecture heavy but not that bad of a class. He says you have to buy a book containing multiple stories but all stories and poems assigned can be found online in pdf form. Only graded on a few things (3 papers, 3 exams). Overall its an okay class and was not something I dreaded but also didn't completely look forward to.
You have to read a lot and the tests and essays are strictly about what youve read. Two papers, three exams. He doesnt give any feedback on how you missed points on the exam but you can kind of figure out what he is looking for. Overall, you have to work hard to get a good grade.
I really enjoyed grunds class. If your behind on reading, He explains all reading material in depth every class. Hes very approachable and understandable when it comes to problems.
No clear criteria on papers and lectures material you were supposed to read which can get very boring. He is not very clear in test and what a paper should discuss. Hearing him is near impossible, but that not be his fault because of a faulty fan. Overall the class isn't intense, but its very unclear direction wise, maybe its just me used to order
A very boring professor. He gives you something to read for next class but recites the whole story by memory in that class. Some classes are on blackboard so sometimes you only go once a week. He is unclear on assignments. You won't pass his tests if you don't understand the stories. If you honestly just teach yourself the stories you will pass.
Gary is one of the coolest prof at RIC. He is super nice but is lecture heavy. Very boring I must say. But as long as you do the readings and actually study outside of class you'll pass.
Prof. Grund's style of teaching is not particularly engaging and feels like a waste of 2 hours. Most of the class involved him reading the book to us and copying the tables from the book onto the whiteboard. Most of the class is focused on grammar which is a boring way to approach latin. His monotone voice will put you to sleep.
Seriously though, don't take his class! Has more blackboard classes than actually meeting in person. Think that's perfect? It's not. He expects u to know everything when he doesn't present his idea clearly, he writes nothing on the board,so pay att. He gives 3 exams/2 papers with no written prompts/outlines about what he wants. EXTREMELY MONOTONED
Most monotone professor I've ever heard. This guy put at least 2 people to sleep every class. When he's talking its extremely hard to pay attention to what he's saying. He does not engage with the class, AT ALL. Only saw him talk to a student once. The class seriously feels like a waste of time. Hardly reads over your essays.
He is really rude, never understands or helps students. I do not recommend anyone taking English with him. He is quick to judge and criticize student's work.
Professor Grund is one of the worst I have had at RIC. He makes class very boring with nothing but lectures in his monotone voice for two hours. He grades papers expecting them to be from professional writers and not college students. Very rude and I would not recommend taking any of his courses.
Professor Grund really knows his stuff. I took the intro to British Literature. The class was remote, meeting twice a week via Zoom. One think to know is that his classes are extremely lecture heavy. There is very, very little class participation. Just show up and listen. He gave great feedback, but I personally found it hard to stay focused.
Harvard educated, Professor Grund proved to be the most inspirational literature professor at Rhode Island College. Refreshingly, he had no political agenda. He sought to inspire his students to appreciate the works of truly great poets and playwrights. Gary Grund regaled his students with historical facts relevant to the readings. #1 English Prof!
