Very helpful! Makes this class so fun! I actually looked forward to coming to his class!

gary was great, i loved how comfortable he made me feel in class. he was very interesting and i would recommend him to everyone
Cool dude, He is laid back and also treats students as peers. recomend taking his class to anyone
He is cool and laid back. just go to class every day and you should do fine. gives a lot of papers including a ten pager- the only thing that is not fun.
Great guy! one of the most personal teachers, he is more like a older friend/tutor than an ego bloated professor. You can't coast through class, but if you want a teacher you feel good about working hard for, and repays you with respect and A's pick Mr. G
One of the Best Teachers at Cape Fear, If you have to take English you should try and take on of his classes. He is a hard teacher but the class is enjoyable and not boring - worth the extra work
He is a great teacher and he is very easy going.
Love him! You HAVE to do all of the work, and you HAVE to attend class. Gives you PLENTY of opportunies to make up work (but there is a lot of it). Very nice, easy going, helpful teacher. Try and get Mr G if you can!
He is my favorite instructor at CFCC. Take his class if you are ready to work hard and learn more than you could imagine from an English class.
Gary is cool, but I found his clarity on when an assignment was due to be a problem. You always get extentions of work. Definitly keeps you interested in class. I wished he would have been more organized on what he wanted, when he wanted it. Good teacher, just not my kind of teacher.
He is a funny teacher. Do all of your work and you will get a good grade.
Although he gives lots of work, if you are willing to actually learn something in an English class, take this class. He goes way beyond the basics of the English class and introduces philosophy. He also always has some quirky anecdotes to make the class exciting.
Good teacher overall. Pay attention and do what's asked. Do NOT get behind! You'll be sorry at the end of the semester!
A teacher that really knows what he is doing. Assigns a butt load of homework, but hey this is not middle school, you actually have to work when your an adult. Gary is honest and fair. If you fail, its definitely your fault.
I love this class! Mr.G does give out a LOT of homework and it's easy to get behind on your journals. He is interesting and funny. A really nice guy. I definately would recommend him and look forward to taking his Eng.112!
Very good teacher. He does give alot of homework but he knows his stuff!!! I would take another class of his anytime. Be warned... Do not miss a class... you will fall behind.
very fast paced. if you miss a day he will not tell you what you missed
This is a class with a high workload. from what i hear from other people in diffrent 131 classes that wont change with teachers. ALOT of reading and ALOT of writing. if you are taknig a high number of classes dont take this his class. good teacher though!
Very unclear about when assignments are due. Lots of extra credit, but the amount of overall work can be overwhelming. Repeats his opinions often and expresses liberal views.
I would not recommend taking this class ecspecially if you are taking 14+ credit hours. The workload is compared to taking two classes in one.He us unclear on what we wants and when assignments are due and gives no feedback on papers. When you try and ask about homework he will get an attitude. However, he does give the chance for make up work. If
He is the hardest teacher i have ever had. its safe to say that you might cry due to work overload. he can be a nice guy, but when you get a paper back there is no feedback. it just says a grade and thats it. Sometimes the work load is so intense that i feel i will never catch up. you should be a genius to feel okay in this class. good luck to all.
His class was tough, there was an incredibly high amount of work, but you really learn a lot. He is positive, and excited about teaching the field, and he was a very good teacher to have. I received an "A" so it is possible. Just bust your hump and do what he asks.
Professor Gulliksen is a great teacher. You can tell he loves what he does. I have taken English 111(night class) and 112(online) with him and enjoyed both classes.
It is safe to say that this class is a very difficult class for any college student who is taking other courses. The work isn't that hard... but the work load is nearly impossible! The teacher, himself, is a great guy. He loves what he does. He is helpful and will teach you everything that you need to know! You have to be willing & ready to learn.
Do not take this class if you are taking any other classes! The workload is absolutely overwhelming. You will have no time for any other class. If you are a conservative, as we all should be, grow a thick skin because he has no problem giving his mixed up, liberal point of view, which does not make any sense most times.
He is a great teacher and in my opinion college students should know how to write a paper before they take his class. Analyzing literature takes time and I had no problem taking this class, although I had 12 hours, not 14.He lays out his policies the first day so don't stay if you can't hang.
Hard Work but it is worth it because yiu learn alot.
One of my favorite instructors. Heavy work load but if you dont get behind you can earn an A.Great reading voice, he can read to me anytime. Hate there are not more upper level lit classes.
Tough class/lots of homework. No clarity in some assignments. He read to the class a poem before every class like we were his kids. Great reading voice & spoke needed accents. At graduation, he was one of the speakers & I was proud he worked us so hard. I learned a lot & earned my A. Great professor, who loves what he does.
One of the hardest classes I have ever had due to the amount of work.He is not encouraging nor is clear on what he wants.I was frustrated the whole time, yet still liked the guy & his odd sense of humor.Stick with it & you'll not only learn a lot, but appreciate him & the class. If you love English, take him! I ended up with an A,but it wasn't easy!
Just an overall BAD teacher. If you are looking for an easy A though take this class. The workload is high but it is mindless work at a highschool level. As for Mr. G his humor is very sarcastic, he goes on tangents, and is very unclare on his assignments and what he is teaching.
Awesome teacher, especially if you're honestly interested in being a better writer and learning about the classics. Easy class to fall behind in unless you ASK QUESTIONS; he's easy to talk to and leads a intellectually challenging class. I'll be signing up for more of his courses. Earned an A even after submitting final project late.
Crystal clear that he wanted you to turn each assignment in on time with (little) exceptions. Makes you read when he doesn't want to teach, very skeptic of him. Did not like class.
Kind of a tough grader, but generally very fair and understanding.
i really enjoyed Gulliksen as my instructor. i would recommend him for anyone that wants to be challenged. i really like his argumentative based research class.
the instructor doesn't do much to help me.
English 112 with Mr. Gulliksen is NOT for sissies. He teaches on a University level and challenges on the same level. Be prepared for a large amount of work. Writing on a scale below college level is not tolerated. Not liking him is optional, but respecting him is NOT optional. I am extremely grateful for the writing techniques he taught.
This was by far the hardest class I've ever taken. New assignments every single day, and countless amounts of research papers every week. He's a really hard grader and he's not very nice either. Definitely don't take this class if you don't like homework.
It has been years since I took Gary's class, but I decided to go back and read the reviews for some of my favorite professors. I loved Gary's class so much, that I took another one of his classes the next semester. Great teacher. I genuinely miss his class.
Very hard teacher. Even harder grader. So much homework. But this guy knows what he is talking about. If you want a university level teacher at a community college then get this professor. If you want to skate by and collect FA checks with no work then stay out of there.
His class isn't for the easy discouraged student. He is an intense teacher and the work load is stupendous. He is a very nice guy though and worked with me while going through some serious health issue this semester! stick with ti and get your work done and you'll be fine. THIS IS NOT THE PROFESSOR FOR YOU IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY A
Gulliksen has a VERY heavy work load. He tends to trail off topic often, but if you show you are a serious student and it get behind he will help you all he can.
Crazy work load, if your'e a good student, take his class, it's an easy A if you do all the work
Gary is a very demanding teacher but if you do the work it will pay off and he will notice you. There is a lot of work but he is generally an easy grader.
Professor does not communicate well and assigns a lot of work with limited directions and time to complete the assignments. Put simply do not take his class unless you have to.
Mr. Gulliksen is by far the best English teacher I have ever had. He is extremely passionate, and very knowledgeable. He does assign quite a bit of homework, but it only increases your knowledge of the subject matter, and your writing skill set. He is clear about what he wants and expects from his students, IF you listen. He is great, overall.
Not only did taking this class improve my writing skills and my ability to understand and talk about literature in an intelligent and academic manner, but he is genuinely a cool dude. Papers every week, but practice makes perfect. It was by far my heaviest workload, but forced me to learn and become a better student. Thanks, G, you rock!!
Professor Gulliksen is a great source of literary information. Although there is a bit of homework, the assignments were enjoyable and only seemed overwhelming during the final weeks of class. Overall, this class was very enjoyable.
HEAVY WORK LOAD. Amount of assignments almost matched all other classes combined. If you are interested in having a career in english than this is the teacher for you. But if you just need to fill a credit then do not take him. VERY confusing and condescending. Very unpredictable and nearly impossible to get in contact with. Don't waste your time.
Condescending. Refuses to clarify his expectations for assignments. Extremely uncooperative if you miss time due to military service (despite the fact that the school allows such absences). Generally disrespectful and rude to students. Take this class from a different professor not from this guy.
My experience in the class was mediocre. He is not clear when explaining assignments. He often gets annoyed with questions and makes smart remarks. However, he is a funny guy and knows a lot about what he is teaching. I definitely became a better writer due to the fact that the amount I wrote over the semester could be considered a short novel.
If you care about your education you will enjoy this class. It's as though he can see who cares. The work load was steep however this puts so much in the grade book that you can afford to do poorly in some other areas.
He is very inspirational. Expect a challenge. Mr. Gullkisen doesn't expect you to be a great writer. He can help you become a great writer. Pay attention. Appreciate the talent he has and learn from him.
I truly had a terrible experience with this "professor". He is unhelpful and in my opinion arrogant. Myself and other students filed reports to the administration because of his behavior. Do not take a class from this "professor." I had to literally fight for my "B."
He's the teacher from that movie in the ghetto where the new stern teacher comes to town and pushes the kids to do their best, even though they don't want to, that way they'll be more successful later in life. Unfortunately he's stepped out of the movie and into real life; I didn't need the extra truckload of work from one single class.
Ok teacher just make sure you pay attention. Have to show him you are trying and willing to become a better writer and reader. Lots of papers to write at one time.
If you don't care about English and becoming a better writer, you probably won't pass this class. However, if you are willing to put in the work and take advantage of a truly inspiring teacher who has an honest love for English, I highly recommend. I would take this class again in a heart beat. Tough grader, hard to impress, totally worth it.
Horrible teacher. I strongly urge you to not take any class from this arrogant and sarcastic man. He is extremely close minded and unwilling to work with you.
With this professor you really have to get him to respect you as a student. Not in arguing, but in respecting him while standing true to your own opinion about topics. Do not try to BS him. If he sees you making a real effort then he is all for helping. DEFINITELY let him check your long papers during office hours. That made the biggest grade diff.
He is an amazing professor! He is cares about his students. He awesome lectures. He is a published author. Easy to listen to and I would definitely try to take all the classes he teaches!!!
Mr. Gulliksen was an amazing teacher! At first he is really tough but he relaxes after the first week or so. There is a lot of homework but it is really easy. You have as many extra credit opportunities as you want throughout the semester. The only thing is you WILL NOT pass his class if you are not present. Over all great teacher!
Good person, interesting teacher, even though there is lots of work, the teacher makes sure you have time to finish everything. AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW HIS INSTRUCTIONS ITS AN EASY CLASS
. Such a great character, old soul, kind and gentle, has an amazing voice he'll often read to you with. Great scholar and insightful person. You must do the work though. Reading and writing papers that test your critical analysis skills. You owe it to humanity to indulge in American Literature for a semester with Mr. OG Gulliksen
I do not enjoy his class. I would have transferred the first day if it wasn't due to transportation issues. Homework by the heap, barely teaches at all. There is absolutely no guidance when it comes to writing papers, and he's the type of teacher to complain about something you didn't do only after he told you he didn't like it. Can't stand him.
Instructions for assignments lacked clarity. It would have been helpful if he kept class the whole time. Class was in Surf City and there were no college officials on campus. He always let us out early and was rude to students.
Mr. Gulliksen is an excellent professor. I learned so much from him and respect him. Despite what others have said, I have not found him to be arrogant or rude. He is really helpful and understanding if you are willing to do the work. Show up, work hard and give a damn. You'll pass.
He is a tough teacher that give lots of homework and you will feel like you need a whole semester dedicated to that class. His papers are tough because he does not like the use the words "it" or "is." He does give you two free cards of missing assignments. He also gives tons of extra credit. If you work hard you will receive an excellent grade!
If you do not like to read do not take his class, but if you read the material, and prepare then you can make a great grade! He offers tons of extra credit and will always offer help with papers in the writing lab. By far one of my favorite teachers.
I am a average student. Im not going to lie I dont really go out of my way to study or do homework, because Ive never had to. UNTIL THIS CLASS If u are looking for an easy English class to breeze through you will REGRET every ounce of taking this professor. I had to put all my other classes on hold to manage the amount of work (papers)given.
I liked this course. But if you do not enjoy reading or writing papers this is not the class for you. So far I have written 30 (1 page) journals, 3 big (3+ page) papers, plus many other 1+ page assignments. You read many essays in the book. He gives extra credit, allows 4 absences, and allows 2 extensions. Also, after 3 errors in a paper it's an F!
The best English teacher I have ever had. He has been teaching forever, so if you think you can come up with a new excuse, try again. If you aren't going to work hard he will weed you out. If you are looking to learn something, take the class.
Any of his classes are a lot of work. He does ease up after the first couple of weeks though. Shares a lot of personal experiences which ended up being really interesting. Lots and lots of writing.
He's a decent teacher but is extremely hard. he has many 1 page assignments and many formal papers. 3 errors on a paper he automatically gives you an F on it. He gives you the opportunity to make up anything though. Any makeup work will get a C- or lower. He goes off on little stories, is very confusing when giving assignments. VERY HARD CLASS!!
Although a great teacher with good and clear lectures, he does not have any personality traits a teacher should have. He tends to be rude to students, is very arrogant, and does not motivate you or give tips on how to do a better job the next time. The class itself is relatively easy if youre willing to put in the work; he is the difficult one.
Professor Gulliksen, although being considered a hard teacher and assigns many assignments he still is an amazing teacher! Even though I struggled I little to hand in all my stuff, my writing skills improved tremendously! If you love English definitely take him, you'll love all the assignments he gives you.
He does NOT ease up after a couple weeks. He assigns more and more until the very last week. No more than 2 mistakes on papers. About 4-5 formal papers. Tons of HW. You get 6 absences, however, you have to turn in a page-long excuse for each absence. One 0 will prevent an A, no matter how insignificant the assignment was. Does offer extra credit.
This class made me feel like I was drowning. I would not recommend this class to my worst enemy.
Rude and hateful in class. I don't recommend his class.
Very rude and treats you like you are at UNCW, which is beneficial but we are at cfcc not UNCW.
At first I was very worried I would not like his class, but I ended up LOVING it! I wish I had taken a class with him sooner, because I would've taken more of his classes. He assigns of 1 page journals, in-class essay test, true/false test, and at least 2 formal essay. Just do the work, pay attention in class and actually try to enjoy the reading.
I took Eng111 & 112 with Mr. G. He will reciprocate to you what you give to the class. If you don't try or don't care, he'll tell you to drop the class. He seems intimidating & there are times when I despise him, but he truly wants what's best for your education. I'm a much better writer now, but if you aren't willing to work, do not take his class
Professor Gulliksen is a difficult teacher mainly because of the workload, but if you manage your time properly it is completely doable. He's passionate, funny, and entertaining, so the chance that you'll be bored during his class is small. You'll get a lot out of his class whether you like English or not.
If you miss more than 4 days with excused absences, or any unexcused, he will lower your letter grade by half a letter. This would be fine, unless something serious happens, or you get really sick. And for each absence you are required to write a one page paper. If I'm throwing up and stuck in the bathroom, I'm not exactly going to be able to write
Really good teacher. There is quite a bit of homework, but if you work hard it is easy to get on his good side, but just make sure not to get on his bad side. He offers lots of extra credit opportunities if you need them too.
Its been a couple semesters since Ive taken him. At the time, I despised him bc of the amount of work he assigned & how hard it was, but honestly, I got into my top 2 dream schools and have to give him a lot of credit. He challenged me & my writing has gotten much better since his class. Dont take him if you need a good grade, take it to improve
He does care about good writing and is passionate about it, which I do appreciate, but there is a huge amount of assignments. During most of semester, I felt like there was so much work from this one class that I could never get it done. Definitely was a challenge... chose a different instructor
Obviously was bullied throughout life, finds joy in failing students that have a great chance of graduating with a decent GPA if it wasn't for his class. Be prepared to take a hit on the rest of your courses because this class will wear you down and question your future opportunities in college. If English isn't one of your strengths, be ready.
He does not treat us as different just because we are at a Community College, which is amazing. It really prepares you for future classes if you are to transfer. He is very understanding if you have a good reason of why an assignment is late. Get on his good side. Go to class every day. He cancels class a lot. Do not slack off, or you'll be behind.
Professor Gulliksen definitely assigns a course load that makes balancing a full course load, and working enough hours to pay rent difficult. Due to this class my other grades have suffered due to the amount of at home work. My honest advice is to choose a different professor if you are taking this class for credit or are serious about your GPA.
Honestly not worth the stress. Questioned my life once or twice during this course due to the workload on top of living a once sociable life as and adult who has to work frequently. PLEASE do yourself a mental health favor and chose a different instructor. This was a semester of my life I won't be able to get back all for some insignificant class.
While the workload in this class will prove demanding he makes himself available outside of class time to help you if needed. Students are given ample opportunity to do extra credit work to boost your grades or to make up for missed classroom time. I found him to be fair, challenging and overall an excellent professor. I had him for 111 and 112
I am currently taking Professor Gulliksen's class, and I have had a great experience in his class. While he does give a lot of homework, he gives constant reminders in class. You can truly see he cares about every student. As long as hou keep on top of the work you will do fine in his class.
Not worth the time, this class will takes hours and hours of your life you will never get back. He assumes everyone else loves literature as much as him and that he is the best there is. Feels as if you're drowning while taking this course, with barely enough oxygen to get you through but you start to wonder if you'd just rather drown instead. Run.
Yes the workload in this class is absurd. Work stacked on top of each other and papers along with 2-3 page homework assignments due weekly. The work is not what made this class difficult and annoying. There is no work on his website, nothing. You are expected to hear it once and that's it. Old school style which does not work in this era.
Talks about himself A LOT. Very pretentious. Heavy workload, papers on top of journals on top of presentations. Nothing is online. Don't miss class, and should you ever dare to, you get to write a paper explaining yourself. No, it doesn't count for a grade. You will teach yourself more than he'll teach you in this class. Buy the textbooks.
Gullikson is the type of dude that never hands out an A even if he believes the paper is well written. He also speaks of students' private matters (i.e attendance, car troubles, and grades) in front of other students. On the plus side, he is very passionate about American literature.
I took this class during the corona virus and he was no help once they transitioned to online classes. He had wrongly assigned due dates and when I asked for clarification he was of no help. He doesn't use blackboard and poorly explains assignments, leaving students asking questions. Which then you will receive a snarky response. I could go on but.
A really understanding professor, assigned a lot of papers along with a journal a week. Over all lectures are enjoyable.
Kind of rude. He does not care why you missed class or why an assignment was turned in late. I do not recommend it! assigns stupid papers every class. He does not consider you or whatever circumstance you may be in.
Extremely difficult class, Starts class 10 minutes early by his time because "he owns it", if you get late which is technically on time then you receive an extra journal essay. He is also not afraid to fail his students.I watched half the class fail before the end of semester like he said. Textbook and essay heavy. 4 Page Essay every class+Journals
Wow does this guy give an insane amount of work. He assigns 3-4 selections to read/wk, 2 journal entries; 1 page each, and busy work. If you are taking a full load, DO NOT take this professor. Finals week he assigned an annotated bibliography using 8 sources, 7-10 page paper, Final exam, 2 journal entries, and four topics to read from the book.
I had to rent my textbook and it was due two weeks before the semester ended so I wrote my essay and final journals before I sent it back. I don't think he realizes this book is 190 dollars and I have no money to spend so I had to rent and our final exam is all annotating the book. I cannot finish the final exam and I cannot believe it,
I had Mr. Gulliksen for two semesters, ENG 111 and 112. The class is pretty straight forward, he has been teaching for a long time and knows what he is doing. If you are willing to put in a little effort, and respect/ trust his methods, you'll be successful in his courses. I love Mr. Gulliksen, I wish I could have him again! Highly recommend.
Prof. Gullicksen was amazing. I took two of his classes, and he always led them with a calm passion and responsibility to teach and to impart knowledge, but also to push us to do better. He gave us extra credit options that had us experiencing new things and meeting good people, and his lectures were so fascinating. Great professor, 10/10
