Great teacher, if you want to really learn Integrals, this guy can teach them! He is kind of impatient at times, but will still help you when you do not understand.
he is so boring... but the class is so easy.....
Understands the fact that not everyone has been doing mathematics for years and years.
I would not suggest this professor to anyone! He gets mad if everyone doesn't shout out the answers, he makes you feel stupid if you ask questions,he gets WAY behind due to the fact that he explains things way harder than they need be! we had stuff on our test that we hadn't gone over yet.He hardly knows the calculator!! Couldn't even put batteries
Gary is by far the BEST teacher I have ever had. He has his own way of teaching math thats a little different but very effective! He truely loves his job, students and winner dogs!
Explanations are crystal clear. Lots of examples. He gets behind on homework/test returns. He gets frustrated a lot when students don't get things but it shows that he cares. His exams are straightforward especially since they come straight out of his study guides. No surprises.
I have never had a more poorly run course. He never handing things back, never opened the book, never graded things promptly, we were nowhere near where he said we should have been and missed a lot of the material of the course. VERY poor professor!!!
Dr. Gutman is a very nice professor. he is extremely knowledgeable and really wants his students to pass his class.i would recommend him,he style of teaching takes some getting use to though.
He was a really good math teacher. I don't reccomend buying the book, I never used it. He always smells like smoke. Wants everyone to do well in the class... but not always the best at helping if he's already explained something. It seems like he made up grades too. Overall, I don't think I could have had a better teach for this class.
He's an easy, flexible guy. Let you turn in homework late, redo tests and pump up to 75% if you did bad. I never had this problem tho since the tests were ez for me. He loves teaching and knows the material well, that's why he never uses the book. However, you need to have the book to do the homework. Some of the assigned homework are challenge.
Explained concepts with exceptional clarity. Homework and quizzes were short and to the point. Tests were based directly off the excellent review guides he gave out. He could be described as eccentric at times, but overall he is a great and effective math teacher!
He is probably different from most professors you have had in the past, but he is really smart and a really cool guy. I would highly recommend him to anyone, his class is laid back and test are fairly easy. Homework and Quizzes are given every class and are usually a little harder than test. Like i said, he knows what he is talking about. take him!
Really just an amazing professor. If I could take every math class from now on with him I would. In fact i
Took diff eq with Gary. He is an interesting guy. Smart as hell, but sometimes it seems like he is on a different wavelength. He will go out of his way to help you if you don't understand. Left out some useful applications of diff eq because it was his first time teaching it. The book was extremely lousy, so you should get other reference material.
Great teacher. Teaches alot of theory, gives very hard homework, but quizes and exams are fairly easy. Does not sabotage his students like some profs, and grades fairly. Made extremely difficult material comprehensible. Expects you to have very good algebra skills going into class. Highly recomend this teacher
Great!! Very smart guy and very kind person. Provides detailed guides for tests. Highly professional! Take him!!
He is a good teacher and tries to make math fun as possible for everyone, which can be rather difficult at times. does examples on the board, knows his stuff very well and understands not everyone is there to become a mathematician. I would strongly recommend this class to anyone taking math 153.
I had Gary as a teacher for 152 and 153 and I wish he was teaching 254 so I could have him again! He's really strange sometimes, but he makes his tests and quizzes really fair and gives review packets for each test that are nearly identical to the actual test. Practice how to do the problems and you will for sure earn an A in his class!
Great teacher. Material can be very hard, uses a different style for problem solving than the book, so take notes. Book is decent but not adequate, and does not match teaching style. If you come to class, do the practice problems, and ask questions, you will get an A, if you do not, you will do poorly or fail.
Gary is extremely smart, eccentric and jerky for sure, but a good guy.If you have absolutely no sense of humor, you might not like him, and may get offended. He will do all he can to make sure that you do well, if you ask for his help. Like another poster said, he doesn't try to snipe you on quizzes.he tests on exactly what he teaches, makes sense.
After having taken this class for the 3rd time but finally at this school, its so refreshing to finally have a great teacher, one who can communicate and can have fun with the material. Gary is just that breath of fresh air that makes learning something like multivariable calculus doable. Great teacher. High Recommended!!
He's an awesome, awesome Professor. without him, Diff Eq could be alot harder than what it is. He's human and although he may not be consistent with homework or grading, dont let that fool you. He knows math and knows how to teach. He's willing and thrilled to help anyone who asks. Take him if you want to learn Diff Eq and have fun too!
Mr. Gutman is nice, polite and very helpful. It was a hard class but he made it crystal clear to us.
Great professor. Explains material clearly and intelligibly. Clearly interested in his subject and success of his students. Lenient in regard to make-up work. Also is pretty funny!
Gary is the best math professor I have ever had. Always available and helpful at office hours. Lectures are clear and informative. He tells you exactly what will be on exams. I feel like I learned a lot with doing less than any other class.
Awesome prof. He subbed for our class for a few weeks while our regular professor was out. I'll definitely be looking for him for future classes. Has a great sense of humor and obviously really, really loves what he's teaching. Gets excited over numbers. Great guy who makes the material make sense and is very willing to help you.
Best math teacher I ever had. As long as you do the homework, you will be fine on the quiz and Midterms. Before every midterm he will pass out a review sheet, and the test is almost identical to the review.
I completed Math 152, 153, and 285 with him. Great instructor. Would recommend to anyone.
After a quarter of calculus with him, I feel like I'm better at math. I understand the deeper mechanics as he's explaining them in a way I never have with any other math professors. He doesn't care about the answer; he wants you to actually understand the math, which always leads you to the right answer anyway. Take his class.
Dr. Gutman is a great teacher. The material was extremely hard, but he will get you to a point of understanding the material. I love how Dr. Gutman really wants you to learn the material and doesn't really care about writting out the tedious parts of math problems.
I did not like this teacher. I already knew the information, but the way he was teaching was very confusing for other students. Often times he makes mistakes. I did like that he printed out notes for you so you could follow along. Other than that, I would not take him again.
He's a little eccentric, but its ok, he's a great professor. I liked him so much, I'm going to take Math 152 with him next quarter.
He really wants you to understand the material and the big picture of why a particular problem is significant. Would recommend for other classes.
He is awesome teacher I have ever had in CSCC.
Fantastic teacher! Somewhat eccentric but accentuated with a great sense of humor and an enthusiasm for the material. Clarifies everything to a degree that nothing is left doubtful. If you take too much of his time (on a quiz, for instance) or ask him a question he expects you to know, he can be mean. Mostly helpful and cheerful.
Greatest math teacher i have ever had!!! He makes me want to further my study in math. His lectures are not boring and always makes sure that you understand the concepts. I would recommend that you take his class.
So human & understands that his students are too. He is a great teacher!
All around pretty good.he is an actual math prof.got his phd at northwestern and has a math theorem published. One of the smartest and interesting guys u'd ever meet. Take him for high level math like calculs 3 and up
Gutman is one of the best professors I've had, he makes everything super clear and understandable. He also makes his class enjoyable. He's one of the smartest/coolest professors I've ever had and I would recomend his classes to ANYONE! The homework gets a little annoying, but it's not out of the book and it helps a lot. Take this guy if you can!!!
I took Gary Gutman for Math 152 and 153, receiving an A for both classes. I would like to say that Gutman is a good teacher and his teaching makes most students understand the concepts. I can't wait until Spring semester to have math 285 with him. Should be fun!
I had him for several classes you never had to guess what was expected of you. He was unusual in appearance but actually very professional in how he conducted his class. I am so glad he was my teacher. His teaching style was perfect for my thought process. We had a lot of quizzes, but they were short and kept you on your toes. Take his class!
He is the best math teacher you will ever have. This man is a genius-even the other math professors say that.
he was a good teacher. he could be a little condescending at times, but he was very lenient with makeup quizzes and when you turn your homework in. he gave us a study guide for the final that was pretty much everything with the numbers changed
Hard to describe. Very intelligent, well, he went to Northwestern and Chicago, so yeah. Very understanding person. He makes things easy. Like, all those things we've to usually memorize, he'll show you how to go without having to do this but using drawings. But it can be confusing for some. I'm not used to his teaching style. But you might.
Great teacher.
Don't think twice if you plan on taking him, his classes fill up quickly. He seems better to take in higher classes(Calc 1+) than Pre-Calc or God forbid Algebra- his use of theory makes this so, as you're more in need of that in higher classes than lower ones. Take notes in his class!! You can't just Google his lessons! They're different. Trust me.
I recommend you to take him because he is ration human being! Good Professor, sens of humor. He has a magic so that he makes you work hard gives you more than what U did. I can guarantee you, if you are in his class, just think that you are already passed the class. I wish I can take his class all the way!!!
He is a good man like his name but he wasted time on doing some stuff over and over again which is really unnesessary and tedious. He is for students who not good in math not for enthusiastic and serious in math students.
Arrives to class 10 min late every time, has very large vocabulary so is hard to understand and overcomplicates things, responded to only 1 email, but is an easy grader and lets you turn in hw regardless of due date. Had quizzes everytime we met, which were easy. Getting a good grade is easy if you study, which I didn't lol. Better for above Calc1.
Gary gutman is a cool fun professor. he interacts with students and makes sure everyone understands the problems. He's exams are easy and he's a generous grader. I failed calculus twice before I took his class but he won't let you fail. He will know everyone by first names and he's one of the best professors Columbus State has ever had.
Really knows his stuff and more importantly, how to present the materail in a way that is easy to understand. Coming from someone that has a history of doing poorly in math, I now understand the value of having a prof that doesnt just teach how to memorize the formulas but how to understand the reason behind it all.
Gary is the coolest math teacher I have ever had. He is VERY smart and will blow your mind and confuse the crap out of you... but you will leave his class having learned more than you even know. Turn in your HW and do the quizzes and you will be fine. Also, never interrupt him when he is teaching or he gets really pissed.
He is an amazing professor. He does not use his textbook, he uses his own notes and hands them out during class. He is very clear with topics and concepts. Most of the quizzes are take home, and his tests were almost identical to the quizzes. He is very helpful. One of the best teachers I have ever taken.
After the first week, I wasn't sure if I should drop the class or what. I'm glad I stuck around though. He can be confusing but he will inform you what will be on the quizzes and tests. For example, he reviews before quizzes and is fairly lenient in grading. You will learn something, unlike some math classes. I would recommend Gary.
He is definitely a genius with maths. He taught maths using various methods for students to choose the easiest way to understand. He is an hand-on instructor that don't believe in using calculators. He preferred students to understand the concepts before using any calculator. If I could I would of take all my math courses with him.
He can be confusing, as he tends to teach things his way. Confusion is a good price to pay for actually understanding his methods, because they tend to be intuitive and brilliant. You'll not need to memorize a bunch of formulae/algorithm with him. Don't buy the textbook.
Professor Gary is a GREAT PROFESSOR. He might confuse you for the first time, since time to get used to his teaching methods. Do homeworks and quizzes and tests will be easy for you. If you put in good efforts you will learn so much and easily get an A.
Took Gutman during his summer Calculus 1 course. His exams and quizzes are really easy but personally the way he teaches frustrates me. He delves to deeply into proofing everything and derives a overly complicated method of how to proof it, which u would have to do on his exams. Maybe because it was summer the course was harder? I got an A.
Mr. Gutman is different. He's helpful if you're patient, but sometimes he'll bust your chops. He doesn't use a textbook, but his hw can be difficult on your own. (His quizzes and tests, though, are straight from the hw.) His lectures can be overbearing, but with effort you should be fine. I recommend having him as a professor.
Honestly, an amazing teacher. His quizzes and exams are straight forward. Take advantage of the weekend review sessions! The best professor I've had. Awesome guy.
Simply Amazing. One of the few classes I have taken at CSCC where the course materials learned stuck with me past the semester. Gary is truly devoted to assisting his student succeed. I highly recommend to anyone who wants to actually learn mathematics.
He is willing to help even to the point of coming in every Sunday for several hours to answer questions and work with students. His study guides are useful and contain practice problems similar to questions on the test with a separate answer key so you can check your work step by step. Fair grader.
THE BEST MATH TEACHER HANDS DOWN!!!!. He's the only math professor I will ever take at CSCC. If I can't get into one of his classes, I will simply wait until I can. Hes amazing and definitely cares about his students. If you don't show up, you will get behind PERIOD.... and you will not pass. Take advantage of his weekend study sessions.
If you want to learn math this it with this guy.
Long lectures, questions were often shot down as dumb questions instead of being answered in a helpful manner
There are 2 tests and they are 70% of your grade. His lectures are pretty long, but I find him to be supremely helpful. He's always willing to meet outside of class. If you don't feel ready for a quiz, you can schedule to take it another time. He can be impatient. Forget about getting the book. Doesn't use blackboard or mymathlab.
Dr. Gutman's class was the first math class I've ever taken that I really understand what I'm doing in. His office hours are very lengthy compared to most professors. He is very flexible in meeting students for help outside class. Very clear on how to do concepts even with plenty of examples. One of the best professors I've taken.
You will be given all the necessary information to pass his class. I've never had such a caring and dependable professor. If you don't come to class you will get behind. He does everything he can for his students to be successful in his classes.
Show up and write the notes, you may not understand them but in the end he sends emails telling you what to study etc for quizes and tests. He wants you to learn and pass, if you don't its 100% your fault.
His class is boring not because of him. I just think that 2.5 hours of math is unnecessary because he is clear enough for you to be in class that long. He writes nicely and organized when writing on board or checking your (2) exams. But he is unorganized in terms of his schedule and syllabus
Great Professor
Very clear and great teacher!!
The lectures were long and boring, but mostly because of the material being taught. Gary is a funny guy that cares about his students. He is really laid back and doesn't really mess with homework, but will give you practice for the quizzes. You'll know exactly what to expect on tests and quizzes. Overall, great professor, and great teaching methods
Gary is one of the best math teachers I have come across at CSCC. He makes calculus interesting and fun and uses some real life applications to demonstrate the purpose of the material. You must attend class if you want to pass, he does well with make-up quizzes if needed.
Gary is one of the best math professors I've had at CSCC. Doesn't force students to do MyMathLab assignments and is very clear in what he expects from his students. He does use every single minute of class, so don't expect to get out early. Other than that, I would definitely recommend Gary if you want to do well and learn to concept of Calculus..
Gary is honestly the best math teacher I've ever had. He explains things very well, makes sure you know exactly what is on the test, and makes 3 and a half hours bearable by being super funny and laid back. On top of that, he gives out notes and problem practices that, with even a little bit of effort, make the tests a breeze. I highly recommend.
Great math professor. You will like the way he does his quizzes and tests. Only thing is he does tend to go deep into proofing things out. Little too much for Calc 1.
Professor Gutman definitely changed my outlook on math, I enjoy it now. He has his own way of doing things, no fluff or excess material. I actually remember things we did at the beginning of the semester. Gutman is a genius, great understanding of physics, sciences; not sure how CSCC retained someone of his caliber! Im inspired by him, and excited
Professor was very straightforward with practice work, quizzes and tests. If you did the practice work, you'll breeze through b/c he makes them and presents the material the same throughout the course. Funny, candid, and will to help; as long as you help yourself. Awesome and knows his stuff; he holds a doctorate, but you'd never know.
professor Gary is the best math professor at cscc. Easy A if you study.
Go to class, his lectures are very very informative and he works proofs into the lecture in a way that helps me understand the foundation of each topic, not just what I need to pass the test. He cares a great deal about helping students understand the material. His demeanor can be very offputting. Get over that and you will get much from the class
One of my favorite teachers when I went to CSCC. Weird dude but he let us turn in home work as long as it was before the test. I would take him for any math class.
Although his lectures may be confusing a lot of the time, covering up a whole chalkboard in math and is very sloppy with where he writes it, he is a really cool professor, and once you do the homework, you will definitely understand it. He is also such an easy grader. I didn't finish half of a quiz and got a B on it.
I think Garry is an ingenuous math prof. but he does not know how to explain the material. I would highly recommend taking another math prof even if they're harder graders. if you can only take him then try to take the next class with him or at cscc. I'm taking math 2177 at osu now and barely making a C because I didn't learn 1172 with Garry
Lecture is extremely confusing for me. I do the homework and understand it better, but not completely. 90% of grades in this class is tests, so make sure you study well. Very funny and can be reached easily outside of class.
I took college algebra class and he is use to teaching higher level math classes and at one point in class he actually said 'I am never teaching such a low level math class again'. He yelled at many students and did not have much patience. He wanted everyone to pass, but he put nothing in blackboard & you did not know your grade until it is posted
"Bro what?" My whole thought throughout the semester.
This guy sucks at teaching. He might be a genius but youll never understand a thing from his class.. he comes to class starts wruting on the board and does the whole chapter through one problem or one example. Never taking him again. Im mid semester rn and even if I get an A . I hated this class so much!!!
Trig was a class I took and high school and did very well. I understand that college is different but I had never seen or heard of anything he discusses. The other professors in the building don't know how to help us because his lectures are not trig based. The WORST class I've taken before and I would not recommend this professor to anyone.
He is a genius guy but he does things differently. He has his own way of teaching math. Not lot of Homework and might be only few tests throughout semester.
He is a smart guy but I have no idea what is going on in this class most of the time. He just starts writing stuff on the board. There is never any clear explanation of what topic we are even on. His teaching style just didn't work for me. I have to go home and teach everything to myself.
Hes kind of geeky. He holds reviews outside of class on Sundays that are very helpful. He doesnt teach things the way the textbook wants and is unorthodox. However he changes his tests and everything to be friendly to his teaching ways (even the final). Very leanient grader. Definitely take him but be ready to put in a little bit of work for an A
If you take this class, you're going to have to teach yourself all the material because his lectures are a mess. He doesn't move clearly from one topic to another, just starts writing examples on the board and you don't know what is going on. The only thing that was nice about this class were the study guides for the exams. Do the study guides.
In my four years of college, I've never had a professor as frustrating as Gutman. I don't even know why I come to class, I end up teaching myself anyway. That said, exam expectations are clear and the class isnt too hard if you're good at self-teaching. If you want to pass, take Gutman. If you want to learn and keep your sanity, look elsewhere.
He is really smart, but cant always get the messages across to the students clearly. His classes emphasize more on self-discovery and self-understanding(Whereas other classes just give you overwhelming among of info to remember, which you will forget few months after the final;let's be honest). lots of self-teaching, easy A if done right.
Alright, he isn't for everybody. He has a temper at times. However he can be really funny. You never really know what you're going to get. He shows proof in excruciating detail. And can go a little fast. He bounces from subject to subject rapidly, so do your best to take notes. But the exams are easy and his study sessions are a great resource.
Really good dude, works with students and goes with the flow of class. He explains things really badly at first but as the topic goes on somehow makes it understandable. HE USES HIS OWN LOGIC so tutors can only help so much, but he works with you so dont be too stressed.
Engaging lectures. Will comprehensively explain his reasoning for less intuitive concepts, often making analogies to physics, finance, and history. Is not afraid to insert humor into the lecture.
He will give you a lot of chances to do better in the class. If you do bad, it is because you didnt try hard. He will be very accesible outside of class. He will get mad if you ask him dumb questions.
A professor that cares more about teaching than anything else. He is harsh yet understanding and absolutely brilliant. If you put any real effort in his class you should have nothing less than an A. You have the opportunity to raise your grade after the final.
Mr. Gutman is the best math teacher I have ever had. He has incredible lectures and breaks up content that can get monotonous with interesting tangents on the subject at hand. His assessments are a game changer and if you take him do good on the midterms for a treat at the end of the semester.
I took him for the first time last semester, I was completely lost for first week or so but once I got used to his teaching, it was a pice of cake. Weird sense of humor, but the guy is extremely smart if your willing to try it's very easy to get an A. just Amazing.
Gary is such an amazing professor, like one of the best matrh professors at columbus state. He will work with you and help you in every way he can.
Cant say enough good things about him. 1172 is a monster of a class and he actually made it enjoyable. Amazing teacher and he's so funny I start cracking up just thinking about him. If you try, you'll do well (and actually learn). I wish I could take him for the next level courses.
1172 is an awful class at OSU, and Professor Gutman makes it into a perfectly easy and fluid class. Don't get hung up on lectures (take notes and review later!), he is extremely talented at Math and will sometimes explain a concept that is not directly needed but adds depth to those that understand. ZERO TRICK QUESTIONS.
This professor was amazing. Summer 2020 doesnt end for another 3 weeks and Im already rating him thats how good he is. If you fail this class it is because you didnt trying. He has practice work and doesnt go out of his way make the class more difficult. Would you pass his class? Definitely its hard not to. What do you learn? Thats up to you
Professor Gutman is a really good professor to take for this course. Professor Gutman just makes the class so much easier to learn and really does want the best for you. He is very clear on what he expects you to know, and will state clearly on the quizzes, exams, and homework what you have to do. NO TRICK QUESTIONS AT ALL! Lectures are a must.
Gary is the BOB ROSS of mathematics. His Bob Rossness is shown through his ability to teach anyone, his positivity, and just the way he makes a typically bland task so enjoyable. He's also just very smart, works very hard, and is good at his job! Gary has been my favorite college professor, he's a real person and cares about his students.
Absolutely LOVE him. Best math prof ever. Impossible to fail so long as you try. Super lenient, laid back, and caring guy. One of the best professors I have ever met. Every class is structured very well, hard to fail yet impossible to pass without learning. Cant recommend him enough. Ill certainly miss him.
The material itself is very difficult but Dr. Gutman does a great job of initially explaining things then elaborating so you gain a complete understanding wihtout being overwhelmed. Cares a lot about students is very understanding and wants us to succeed. The course itself is very hard but If you have to take it definitely take it with Dr. Gutman.
Gary was a good teacher. He explained things well, and I was always ready for the tests. The final exam was the first 3 tests combined, and so the final was a time to improve your previous test scores. He played cat videos during the tests, "So that we wouldn't get too stressed out." He was charismatic, funny, and overall a great teacher.
Hes a fun laid back prof. He loves math and is good at teaching it. I might have bugged him a little too much during His office hours, but his mastery of the material makes him a wonderful professor. Can be a little quirky at time but who isnt? While taking his engineering mathematics class he let me skip the final because i had an A+ Already
It's only the beginning of the semester, but I already feel overwhelmed. Prof Gutman is probly a nice and funny guy but as professor who's role is to TEACH is not doing a great job. No book, no access code for practice. I don't understand anything, he's going way too fast. Prepare to teach yourself. Do not recommend if you have no calc background
He seems like a great professor in class. Not such a great online teacher. The speed he gives lectures at is insane. If you dont already understand chemistry you are in big trouble. Only practice he gives he makes. He doesnt always do what he says he will to help and gets rude when someone asks a question he doesnt want to answer.
Terrible professor, had tantrum attacks when only few students would answer questions in classes. Will single out students to pry an answer, and if the answer they give is incorrect, he will publicly clown them. Very scuffed presentation as well, very hard to keep track of what he is talking about at any given time. Poor class structure as well.
I'm sure Mr. Gutman is a great teacher in the classroom, but taking him for an online class was a huge mistake. He seems pretty incompetent when it comes to technology and ends up getting upset at students when his Internet decides to cut out. He asks if anyone has any questions and is upset when no one answers him. Lectures suck but quizes are ez.
Worst math prof I've had at CSCC. Gets angry at students when online class cuts off. Didn't even have a course calendar until 9 weeks into the course, and still no due dates. Assigns quizzes and tests randomly which make up 70% of your grade. Lectures are confusing and not helpful. Only good thing is quizzes are easy and just like the practices.
At first I was skeptical of Gary because he was like no other professor. As the weeks went on and I PUT IN THE EFFORT TO UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL, it turned out to be a great opportunity! Gary is funny, caring, wants to see you succeed, and all in all is a genuine person. Quizzes were just like practices, exams were just like quizzes. Thanks Gary!
Professor Gutman can get easily aggravated at times when people don't participate in class, but other than that he was an easy grader and gave you all the materials to pass. I barely showed up to class, turned in all of my work late, and still got an A+. He was very understanding if you couldn't get work in on time, which is what I admire.
Take him! I thought I would fail Calc, but I ended with an A. Participate, go back and look over the notes/practice he posts answers to, ACTUALLY do the quizzes/tests, and you will get an A. He has a different teaching style, so it will be overwhelming at first. He only gets upset when people take advantage/don't show up because he is so generous.
He scheduled an 8 AM class while not being a morning person, expects full participation so early in the morning, he does examples and expects us to get it right 100% of the time. If you don't, he gets mad at you for being wrong and is a complete jerk about it. A 2.5-hour class became a struggle to sit through if you make him mad, which is very easy
Please dont listen or read the bad reviews these students be giving. Gary is a great professor, trust me! He will work with you. He does have an attitude about some things, but at the end of the day. HES A GREAT PROFESSOR. Take him for any math class and you will pass. Guaranteed
Best math professor ever. He'll want you to participate but participation helps so much in an online class. Every lecture is recorded and he goes through tons of examples. Practice, quizzes, and tests all relate. Super accommodating. Super caring. I'm not good at math at all and I did really well. Just stay on top of the deadlines.
One of the best.
good professor & everything was fine until we started doing preliminary exam per chapter(no midterms) & quizzes and final exam. preliminary exams were there till one week prior to your final exams. got depressed due to preliminary exams. second attempt possible if the whole class fails. math 2177
TAKE HIM! You won't regret it !!!!!
He made calc the easiest math class I've ever taken
Would definitely be rated higher if it were not for the back half of the semester being a cramfest due to poor planning. His instruction style worked well albeit a bit rushed, but quizzes and preliminary exams (same general content as the quiz) piled and piled. He is VERY calm/forgiving with late work, albeit occasionally grumpy. (took this s2021)
This man is an absolute legend!
This professor is super sweet and funny, He cares a lot about students and doesn't mind to give you extensions on quizzes. You mainly just do quizzes and tests but all super short and easy to do. He does practice problems with answers to help get a better understanding. Would definitely take again!
Very sweet guy. Gave lots of extensions and help when needed. Overall just a great calc professor.
He is a nice professor at times but he gets angry when nobody talks even though people talk in the chat. Yells saying hes getting frustrated because of this when he could just continue teaching.. Went to office hours for help he continued to be persistent and asked if i was even in class just because i was struggling. Gives too much at once.
After my 1st day of his class lecture, I gave Professor Gutman a 5/5 rating and left a comment saying, this man is an absolute legend! Here I come back at the end of the semester and WOW was I right. My best advice is to always watch his video lectures before class, participate in his lectures as much as possible, and do the practice problems.
He is very understandable person and caring, his lectures may look like a mess sometimes but over all his very great
Prof. Gutman really likes participation and often asks "Does that make sense?". When he asks this, do yourself a favor and answer. He has videos to watch on the material, however watching him actually walk through the examples and explain why he's doing things will greatly help your understanding and grade. So I would suggest going to the class.
Great professor, genuinely made it easy to understand tough concepts and created the class to help students learn and be successful. He does ask if stuff makes sense often, but this is to help people struggling. Personally, I watched the recorded lectures because I learn better on my own pace. Nice guy
Amazing prof & a kind human. I'm a self-taught kind of person so I also preferred recorded lectures. Obvi there's a learning curve for novices to calc but prof is super helpful & explains material very clearly/simply. & if u attended live sessions, there's always an opportunity to ask clarifying questions in real time as he always asks if we get it
Nice, lenient with due dates. That said, he is the most confusing teacher I've ever had. He speaks like a math text book, gets offended if you have questions and responds very condescendingly. There is a LOT of lecture to cover. 30-40 minute videos required to watch before each class. I would avoid him if you can.
Prof Gutman is very generous with due dates and truly wants to make sure you understand the material. I would highly recommend taking his course as he has helped me understand calculus more than any other teacher has before.
Very easy math class. Do the studies guides and you'll ace every test. Literally learned nothing from the teacher, did all assignments, and had no surprises show up throughout the course.
Professor Gutman knows how to organize his lessons so it's easy to follow along. I had no trouble starting his class after break since we briefly reviewed materials from the previous class. The quizzes he hands out are very close to what the exams look like. He tries to make students feel as comfortable as possible when taking exams. Very awesome!
Gary is a great math professor and clearly cares about students. He actually wants you to get a good grade. He also plays cat videos during exams which is always fun!
Amazing teacher. Does a great job reviewing concepts so we are reminded of what went on in previous classes. Always wants you to do your best and learn and improve your grade. A great person and is very caring!
Took him for both MATH 1172 and MATH 2173, both made very easy by the professor. He has practices you were meant to do, but didn't do a single one for either of the classes. Makes the reviews exactly like the exams so if you just do them a couple of times before the exam and remember how to follow the problems exams should be a breeze. very chill
Not a bad teacher. The issue is he is quite rude and short tempered. Is known to swear in his classrooms and is not very helping. Students have complained of him being nasty and saying some mean things. If you are one who does not handle criticism well or gets offended. highly suggest you find somebody else though most math teachers are similar.
GARY is unprofessional and is extremely rude. If you ask for help, he gets frustrated. If you get an answer wrong while asking for help, he gets frustrated. If you answer a question that he asks during lecture wrong, he gets frustrated. It seems like he does not want to teach and honestly, he should find a new profession with the way he acts.
Gary can be a little testy, but he's a good guy. He BENDS OVER BACKWARD for his students. He will go to the ends of the Earth to make sure you pass. The guy really cares about his students. He goes to absurd lengths to make sure you understand the material.
Gary is the best. Attendance in this class is necessary not only bc of financial aid, but because it is important you don't miss a lecture. His method of explaining things is amazing. He is caring, respectful and funny. I will definitely take this professor again, and I'm looking forward to it. I wish I could also be friends with Gary irl.
Amazing professor) I was so scared to take calculus, but he made it manageable. Come to lectures, do the practice/quizzes, don't be scared to ask questions, and watch the videos if confused (rly helped me!) - you'll easily pass. He was a bit frustrated at times; I just didn't take it personally. Final was based on questions you missed in past tests
He teaches well, but very slowly we could not even get to Taylor polynomials and Fundamental theorem of Calculus.
Gary is a very nice guy; he tells jokes and is very personable. That being said, he is an awful math teacher. I took AP Calculus, and his teaching methods are very outdated, so Khan Academy and YouTube are of no help, and he makes you do things in the most difficult way possible just to avoid using a calculator. I would not recommend him.
Gary is a good guy you can tell but he does get frustrated pretty easily. He is not necessarily rude but just gets flustered quickly. He doesn't like us students to use the proper calculus terms as he states that students don't really understand the terms. But is that not a perfect teaching moment for students? overall hes not bad.
I haven't had a professor like Gary in my lifetime. He has a very straightforward way of solving problems. You don't need a calculator at all. If you take him, that "makes sense to me"(he often repeats it while teaching). Exams are a piece of cake.
I really enjoyed taking Engineering Math A from Gary Gutman. He explains concepts very well, and the homework he gives is very doable since he gives corresponding practice problems/solutions. He can be a bit sarcastic at times, but it is not meant to hurt anyone.
Prof Gutman is a really cool teacher. The lecture problems that we go through in class is very similar to the hw that he assigns. He also posts practice problems for each hw that he assigns, so if you stuck on a problem, you can look the practice and the solutions that he posted and you'll be set. The exams are also very similar to the practice.
Professor Gutman has a straightforward teaching style, but can get frustrated easily if students struggle. The class is doable with regular attendance and use of resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook.
Just need to be able to keep up with the work. Seems a little harsh at times, but he is helpful.
Easiest math class ever as long you pay attention and he has online vids if you need to go over lecture again. It was very useful. 3 exam 1 final, your HW is your quiz, so it's free points tho only worth 10% of your grade. Exam is 60% final 30% He has mock test which is the same for your same exam and final. He does get mad easiest kinda funny ngl
Great professor with clear lectures and expectations. Very good reviews for exams.
I highly recommend Gary gutman. Lectures were explained clearly. Honesty and participation are very important. He projects with his voice so light ear plugs were great for my sensitive hearing. Tests were very straightforward with the study guides. The final was one of the best formats I've ever taken.
He gets mad when you ask him questions and for help. He doesn't seem to like teaching
Def. harder than 1151, but if you study and follow lecture, you'll do fine. If you've taken him before, same format for quiz/exam/final.
king, i hate math, took this after dropping 1172 at osu, easiest math class i've ever taken.
I just couldn't wait to end of the semester to write my review. This guy is simply a genius and cares about every student. Saw some comments here about him gets angry but people don't realize that he makes everything so simple for everybody to understand and if you keep bug him he runs out of patient and he's a human being so give him a break.
Amazing professor a little quirky at times but overall made the lectures as interesting as they could be considering its calc. 90% of your grade will be 3 exams and 1 final 10% hw. The exams look identical to the hw and review guides he just changes numbers around overall 10/10 professor and cool guy.
