good teacher, great jokes
Most boring prof I've had.
Couldn't stand the course. Don't ever take it!! It's boring, and completely useless
Don't take a class with him unless you have to. He is boring, his jokes are bad, and his grading system is overly difficult
One of the wierdest professors I've ever had. Looks like Al Franken. Tells terrible jokes. Puts water on the overhead, swirls the marker around in it, and says it reminds him of the 60s. A strange fellow. But I liked it.
One of the best teachers at this university. People might not like him because they have no sense of humor, or because they are bad at doing logic.
such an easy class
great guy, ok teacher
No Comments
He is a nice guy but don't take the class unless you are into logic. So boring that you are forced to skip class. Just take the damn calculus for your R2.
Occasionally funny in a wierd sort of way, an alright teacher (boring though), and a really interesting subject matter.
He's a good professor, as long as you can stand his dry humor.
If you get it you get it...it was hard for me..i busted my butt to learn the crap but couldnt...its easy if u get it..if u dont strap urself in
If ever you have trouble understanding the subject matter, see him during his office hours. He is very helpful, unless he is talking about baseball. His humor is so unique, that if it were anyone else it wouldn't be funny, but I can't help but laugh at all of his jokes. Good guy.
This course was entirely too easy. Class was unbearably slow. Not recommended for those who want to continue in philosophy-take something more challenging, or read on your own! Sometimes his text makes things more confusing by explaining them more than they need to be explained. Nice guy though...
Nice guy, sort of strange, very helpful. If you understand the logic in class then the class is an easy A, otherwise it's a bit of work. The text is good though.
I came into the class thinking "what the hell". Prof. Hardegree is weird at times.. and going to the lectures is a MUST.. but what helped me get through were the helps of the TA's before the exams. I came into that class thinking an F was in store for me.. I'm going home with an A.
boring subject matter. only had to attend lectures and do very few text exercise problems(which are harder than his actual test questions)to prepare for tests and get A's. the before and after class notes online is a plus too.
Awesome teacher. His book and lectures are extremely clear and make it an easy subject. Read the book or go to his lectures and do some problems and you'll earn an A like nothing.
Took every class (20 years ago) he taught. Great, funny, a bit weird at times.
Because Professor Hardegree wrote the book he teaches from, his lectures tend to be exactly the same as the chapters which coincide with them. While many may not like this, I find such a method to be very helpful. Missing lectures is no problem as long as I read the book and do the exercises, and slacking with the reading as long as I go to lecture and do the exercises. I'm not really interested in logic at all, but his strange sense of humor (which shows in his examples) at least makes the class bearable.
yes, this guy knows what he's talking about, but he's a **** pig
I recommend this class to anyone looking to fulfill their R2. Very interesting class. Hardegree is a subtle riot, his dry humor makes the class. One of the few classes I went to daily. i would recommend that philosophy majors take this class before phil 100.
A very funny man. I had a conversation with him about the Carpenters. Seriously. Not an easy class, but passable and enjoyable so long as Hardegree's rather high-brow sense of humor doesn't throw you for a loop.
you dont have to go to class. read his book, do all the problems in the end of the chapters and you'll get an A. he's a very smart man. oh and you have the option to take two more exams to replace two lowest score exams.
The professor wrote the book and put the slides and the notes on-line, so going to class isn't necessary. The problem is that the information covered is so boring and useless that you'll end up cramming right before the test and then dreaming of tildes, backwards Es and upside down As.
He has a very dry sense of humor which made the class. I dont like logic at all but if you do the exercises at the end of the chapters you should do well. Lectures are posted online so there is no need to have to go to class.
This was one of teh hardest classes ive taken. But i got a tutor to explain everything to me and ended up doing well in the class. You never have to go to class. theres no point, he doesnt explain anything and he wont if u go to his office too. GET A TUTOR, you can get an A. Also, REALLLYY EASY TO CHEAATT!!
Funny teacher. Don't have to go to class. Lecture slides and notes online. No textbook, you can look online for it or buy one if you want. Three tests. If you miss one you can make-up during finals week. No make-up during the semester though. It's a difficult class though... Great guy though.
Hardegree is a riot, cuz hes just strange in a funny way. The class is pretty hard if u dont pay attention. One of those, either u get it or u dont classes. Buy the book b/c a lotta the questions on tests come straight from book examples. Not necessary to go everyday to class, u can seriously teach urself stuff using the book & powerpoints.
Amazing class and professor. Shouldnt be too difficult if you go to class and do the homework problems (at least some of them). Teacher is hilarious and makes class very interesting. Definitely one of my best professors so far.
hardegree is the man. every word that comes out of this man's mouth are like prcieless gems. this class is a v. good intro and is unquestionably easy.
He's clear about what he expects from you, and he's pretty fair. The class is incredibly boring, though. He goes off on tangents and I fell asleep a few times.
Hardegree is a great teacher. He's funny and loves to laugh at his own jokes. Logic is definitely one of those things you either get or you don't but if you're proactive he'll help you out.
Awesome class. Wicked funny. Don't need to show up. Easy A. He takes the best 4 out of 6. Definitely one of the best profs at UMass.
He's a great guy, laughs at his own jokes, clear about expectations. Either you get it or you dont, but he will try and make sure you get it. Will definitely help students who ask for it. Do the homework problems! Best 4 out of 6 exams, one of my easiest A's at UMass, but still an interesting class. Worth taking!
gary's a bubbly guy, loves cracking jokes. no homework and you can skip classes and learn everything two days before the test and do okay. also he gives you 6 tests and only counts 4...so its easy to do well
It's a fun class! If you pay attention to the powerpoints and do practice problems, you'll do just fine in the class! Attendance may not be mandatory, but it REALLY helps to go. The way he explains problems in class is incredibly useful.
Ok. Remember the guy from the Clear Eyes commercial? "For dry eyes use Clear Eyes!" Yeah...you could probably compare class with Professor Hardegree to that commercial. The material? Absolutely useless. However, Hardegree is a cool guy!! Take the time out to talk with him after class. It may or may not help your grade. The book is online too.
Easy class but teacher was major turnoff to the subject. Never showed up considering he had very dry humor and on taking my final he made a very rude comment to me. Suggest the class, not the professor.
Excellent professor. If you show up and do your homework, 90% of you will understand him. If you ask him any questions you need answered, you're almost guaranteed to pass.
A truly excellent man. He likes to laugh at his own jokes, but hes amusing and very clear. If you go to the classes then it will be easy to get through the exams. One of the nicest people Ive met outside of class as well. I imagine that in high school, he'd be a nerdy guy that wore button downs that was on the model un that the cool kids liked too.
Very funny and smart guy. Don't need to go to class at all, he wrote the book. If you can do problem sets in book you will ace the course.
Funny guy, study the material the day or two before each test, and you will ace the class. Easy stuff, terribly boring material.
He's no Fred Feldman
So funny! Great professor, very smart.
Nice guy. He knows its boring materical so he makes jokes to make the time go faster. You take 6 exams and he drops the lowest 2 grades. Exams are kind of hard, so study!
There is something about a teacher that alludes to Modern Warfare in class that just warms my heart. A pure genius and personally mentor/hero.
This is quite possibly the worst class ever. If your taking it, good luck understanding derivations. There is only one way to understand the material, if you don't there's not really anything to do.
Dude this guy silently laughs at his own jokes, and wastes class time for those who are desperately trying to pass with a D in his class. I took it because I thought it was going to be word problem deductive reasoning..or at least related to everyday logic. Instead it's basically calculus but with letters where numbers would be. DO NOT TAKE.
I thought this class was pretty hard. If you're good at math, you'll probably be good at this class. I'm not that great at math, so I thought some of the concepts were pretty hard to understand. He's a nice guy, though, and will put random video clips and pictures to make you laugh a little. Basically, if you suck at math, drop it.
His textbook is online for FREE on his website. No need to buy the book. His lectures are sort of difficult and are verbatim to his textbook, still not clear. He seems to over analyze simple formulas. YouTube, drjasonjcampbell on symbolic logic he makes it easy and will help you pass
Semantics is a very difficult topic and in Hardegree's class our theoretical approaches varied. This is a logic class, very different from the way a linguist would introduce semantic theory. It' an awful lot to wrap your head around in 14 weeks, but Gary is often available for help and willing to devote extra time to make this subject clearer.
Do not take this class. It's a waste of time. No one will ever need to know this stuff ever in their life. That said, it's an easy A. 6 exams, he takes the best 4. Especially if you are a Math guy. I suppose if you suck at Math this is not for you. Don't take this class expecting Philosophy, cus its Math under normal expectations. Dont buy the book
This class has a very specific type of person that should take it, and it's the kind of person that is good at math and can really wrap their head around some complicated concepts. I am horrible at math and this class is one of the hardest I've ever taken. He's a nice guy and all and really funny, the material is just not accessible to everyone.
I am not a math person at all.Math is the devil for me.But if you do 3 practice problems out of the free text book a few times a week you will be fine.He is also a funny dude and I actually enjoyed the class
If you don't understand logic, please get out of higher education. There's no need to bash on Hardegree when he so clearly goes through the material during lecture, offers his textbook for free online, and allows you to drop two out of six bad grades. Anyway, he has a dorky humor that's a bit cheesy, but he's a lovable guy. Pretty straightforward.
It's not all that easy a course, but the professor is great. Very thorough. I will probably take one of his courses again in the future.
This was a very interesting class; I didn't know quite what to expect when I signed up but I was pleasantly surprised. The textbook is available free online. Personally, I never read the text because I found it to be more confusing than just attending lecture. I did use it to complete the the assigned (but not checked) hw. Good class overall.
If you're trying to get out of the R2 requirement, and you don't think this class requires math, you're wrong. Go take stats or calc because at least you'll have the basics down. This class is not easy and you are learning lots of things new. But he does give six exams and only four are graded. The fifth and sixth exams are the same as 3rd and 4th.
Really easy class! There are six tests, but if you are happy with you scores from the first four you won't have to take the last two (which are the final exam). However, there are some people who I think would feel more comfortable taking calculus or stats if trying to fulfill the R2 requirement. Logic is a really abstract type of math.
Attendance isn't mandatory for a good grade but there were 3 other people in my class, so it's obvious. Very cool, pretty funny, basically a lovable dork with sharp analytic skills. Material is difficult and explanations can be confusing but eventually he'll explain it in a way that makes sense. Math skills are neither required nor relevant.
He post the slides online, but if you want to understand what is going on, you should go to class. He has a dry sense of humor and will make jokes. He is very good at exampling the material, if you practice you will do fine. The textbook is also online, but you don't need it if you go to class.
Mr. Hardegree explains everything is several different ways so that eventually one will click for you. However, if you don't keep up with the readings and practice, you'll have no point of reference and may not be able to follow the discussion.
Dr. Hardegree was awesome! I had no experience whatsoever in logic prior to this class, and he did a great job of thoroughly explaining everything. Plus, he writes the textbook for the class and gives it to you free online! There are 4 exams in class, and an optional final that counts as 2 separate exams. The top 4 grades count towards your grade!
Prof Hardegree was an awesome guy. You're only graded on 6 tests, and he drops the lowest 2. They're very easy if you know how to do it. He wrote the textbook so he provides it online for free! The website also includes his lecture slides and more. If you go to class, follow along and try a few practice problems a week you'll be golden!
This class was stupidly easy. I stopped going to lecture because the professor would make unfunny jokes and would go so in depth into things that don't matter- you'd think he's trying to teach a kindergarten class based on how he would explain everything. I flipped through a few pages of the textbook before exams and got an A. Gpa Booster class.
You either get the information in this class easily or you do not get it at all. If you are looking for an easy gen ed requirement (and you are not good at math) I am telling you right now you will struggle greatly. You can't learn this stuff overnight it takes time.
Easy class! 4/6 exams count towards your grade. Free textbook online available on his website, which I recommend using to do practice problems before the exams. You don't need to do any homework (none due or collected ever) to understand the material if you go to every class. Don't skip and you'll never have to really study!
Incredibly boring and dry. His humor is awful and sometimes offensive. The class itself would be cool if the professor was better at presenting the information.
Prof Hardegree is extremely bull headed and biased. He literally wrote the book on this class and acts like a pompous fool. His humor is dry, his lectures are boring, and you are only graded on your best four scores out of 6 exams. This class is a breeze if you review the slides he posts on-line. ONLY TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU NEED THE CREDIT
Professor Hardegree is definitely not for everyone. His humor is very dry, and he unapologetically laughs at his often-times bad jokes. Once you realize that he just doesn't care if we laugh, it becomes funny. Review the slides and the class is very easy. His grading is very straightforward. Understand the content and do as he asks and get an A.
Phil110 was the worst class I took at Umass. As a senior with pretty bad math skills I just needed to fulfill my R2 requirement after failing calc and thought philosophy wouldn't be as bad. I was wrong. Prof Hardegree goes on random tangents, is rude and condescending, expects you to just naturally understand, and offers no test review. Boring, too
Hardest class I have ever taken, no idea what I got myself into and would not recommend for an R2 credit. Hardegree has an odd way of teaching, I wouldn't say bad but it absolutely did not work for me, his book that he uses for class is what the lectures is based off of. You can skip lectures bc they are all examples of problems that he post online
Professor Hardegree is THE BEST professor I've had at UMass - by far. He is super funny and makes his lectures engaging and entertaining, and his presentation slides - which he posts online!!!!! - are absolutely magnificent. My favorite class ever taken.
Lecture's were unnecessary to go to because they were all online and all he did in class was restate exactly what was on the slides. I didn't learn anything until I went to talk to a tutor. Would not take again
Ive never had a professor make me so uncomfortable. He laughs at his own jokes constantly and he can be extremely rude and condescending. His grading is impossible and the final (rewriting 6 small essays) was the most annoying assignment Ive had in college. Would strongly recommending avoiding any of his classes.
It's translating logic to English and back, nothing spectacular. Maybe because of the low level of difficulty, he will readily dock you points for not doing things the way he likes it. Maybe take a STEM logic course if you want some more exciting stuff.
Gary is a really nice guy, but this class was quite awful. Don't take this expecting an easy A, even if you show up and do the homework, you still might not do well. Learn from my mistake and listen to these reviews! If you're a Philosophy major and need this class, take it elsewhere, you won't regret it.
Worse class in the world. Would give a zero if possible
This man made up his own form of logic that has no application for the real world. It is the most stupid class ever. He wrote the textbook so that's useless too. I wish I didn't take this class.
The grading is solely off four exams, of which the last two can be retaken. However, the problem with this is that if you do poorly on the first two exams, you are essentially screwed. His cut-offs for grading are also incredibly high to earn an A, you need a 95 average. The material is not difficult but he is not good at explaining it.
While Gary has a very gifted mind for Logic. When it comes to teaching students with no background, he isn't the best teacher. He bases grades off your 4 highest test grades of 6 total tests. 2 optional tests being taken in a 2 hour period on finals week. Be prepared to do the HWs if you don't understand the material. Only take if you need credit.
Other reviewers are right, his lectures can be a bit awkward. But they're not that bad, and he's a really cool guy. Super accessible through office hours and always willing to go in-depth. Very fun guy to talk to. Graded on 7 exams, 2 lowest dropped, so I didn't have to take the final. Lenient grader, 2 questions wrong on a 12 Q exam was a 90
I love this guy. He gives a great lecture and has a quirky sense of humor in the best way. Classes are interesting and you can participate as much as you want (but the more the merrier if you want to learn). I've taken Intro to Logic (Phil 110) and Logic and Language (Phil 400). Huge fan of both classes. He is also clear with grading. Great guy!
