The best class I've ever taken and he's got to be borderline genius! I have never learned so much in a class before! I would take anything and everything he taught!!
Dr Hipocrisy, This guy is so arrogant his head is about to explode. He actually corrected me when I called him Mr. Harrington and made me call him Dr. A little advice for you Dr. Hipocrisy. The sixties are over man
Dr. Harrington's Shakespeare class is excellent, but definitely not easy. Expect lots of reading, notes, and diffiuclt tests. But it's worth it. Great guy too.
He's a very nice guy, helped me a lot, and pretty understanding. You do a lot of work- and the tests are not easy but there's nothing on the test he didn't go over in class. He's also got a wierd sense of humor.
An great professor. Everything you need to know for the tests and essays are given in class. All u need to do is come to class/study. Everyday was a new adventure. One of the most entertaining professors I've ever come across. An asset to the Eng. Dept.
Dr. H is great. The class is a bit difficult, but not overwhelming if you read and go to class. It's worth it just to go and see what kind of relation to sex he can make that day...apparently, Will S. was a****... :)

I think I must be the only person that doesn't like Dr. Harrington. I don't know its just that in class EVERYTHING is phallic to him. I guess that just irritates me. The class is easy enough if you take notes and read, its just putting up with his opinions that might be tough.

Awesome... he has the driest sense of humor, but he's such a funny and nice guy... He makes it a point to know everyone in the class... I'm taking his Shakespeare class just to have him again... you DO have to go to class and take notes... the essays and midterms are easier if you go to class... :)
Why would you call a professor Mr. you dumb ****?
Really...does everything have to be about sex? How boring is it to read plays silently for homework and then take a quiz about them every class session? I'm an English teacher now and would never expect to elicit interest in Shakespeare from my students with those teaching methods...
BRILLIANT!!! Best lit. professor I EVER had. Don't agree with the phallic references? Then challenge him. If you have a valid point with good support, he'll be the first to concede. You'll never learn anything without discussion.
didn't care for him, he's eccentric, funny, and everything represents a phallus - i had A's on everything except for 1 C on a paper - he told me he was very upset with me - somehow i ended up with a B - how is that possible????
He seemed like a pretty cool professor, although after about a month I had to withdraw from the class. DO NOT sign up for this course if you are not an English major. He made it clear plenty of times that this is an upper-level course. I let me know that I had to withdraw and he was undertanding and welcomed me back to other classes.
Droped after first day........
I like Shakespeare, not the professor. He is exrtremely rude to students and flipflops during lectures, which is confusing. He is easily offended by small things such as yawning in class. His quizzes are not easy even if you read the acts because he picks out the smallest detail. Avoid this guy and for those who have to take his class, good luck!
I thought it was a great class. You have to keep up with the rreading and do the work, but it all benefits in the end. He is a fair grader and always takes questions. I thought he was one of the best professors I've had at Salisbury.
He is crazy, in a good way, but also great teacher - willing to do anything to help. As long as you read, (which isn't that much) you'll do fine it's not hard to get an A out of this class.
Yeah Dr. Harrington is pretty crazy but he's awesome and easy and tells great stories. He LOVES Shakespeare to death. There are quizzes basically every day and you read pretty mainstream plays that you read in high school. Pay attention to his analytic points in class and you'll get As on the in class essays and exams
I used to hate Shakespeare, but Harrington makes it fun and amusing. Besides, his crazy outfits are worth class any day! He's a really cool teacher.
Ehh. What's the big deal about this guy?
Amusing, keeps discussions going. Quizzes 90% of classes - easy reading checks, counts for attendance. No out of class essays, just 2 in class. Take good notes to study from and the 2 exams are cake.
Dr. Harrington is very interesting. He will teach you things about Shakespeare that you could never get off Sparknotes. You need to participate in class discussion and do all the reading. Pay attention to small details for quizzes and don't yawn or let your cell phone ring in class. He is pretty hot and a sharp dresser as well.
hated his class.. very rude and just not a nice person.
I agree with the last person. Stay away from this teacher if you can. He is really nasty, mean and miserable. I dreaded going to class. The only person who could make learning Shakespeare so awful!
Very moody, takes his anger out on his students. one day he was cursed at one class and stormed out in the middle of a lecture. very unprofessional!
I adore Dr. H! He's funny, brilliant, and, yeah, a snappy dresser. I really screwed up the midterm and he gave me a lot of help to prep for the final. Students who expect to get through without thinking or making an effort, though, will be in trouble.
He trys hard to teach well but he just can't. Very rude and unfair.
Don't get me started...ugh...
I've had him for two classes now and he is absolutely brilliant. Seriously, he is one of my favorite professors and he only gets mad if someone shows him attitude or makes NO effort in his class. If you are a serious English student, you must take a class with him. If not, then get your lit credit elsewhere cause this is hardcore stuff.
I'd take any course Dr. H taught. He's really passionate about his subject, and it's contagious. If he's acted angry, it's probably because only a few students were prepared for the class. He does expect you to do the readings! Great sense of humor, too.
If you do not know religion..your screwed...sooooo much BORING reading....ughhh...horrid!!!
Sly sense of humor, doesn't suffer fools gladly (or at all!). Read the assigned plays carefully, participate in the discussions, and you'll be fine.
Harrington is crazy, but he's fun. It is kind of a pain to have a read a play every other day, but he's pretty reasonable. He's really funny and knows his stuff. Basically, if you read the books, it'll be fine. His tests are based completely from notes, so even if you didn't understand the book or play, he explains it for you in class.
I agree with the others - he's very funny and very smart. You have to pay attention, ask questions if you don't understand something, and read the plays ahead of time. I enjoyed the class, and I'm not an english major.
Great teacher to have for any level, and you can see that he lives for his work. He really knows his stuff. Enthusiasm rubs off on students.
Nice guy, knows his stuff. I think we clashed heads a little bit because he expects you to see things the way he explains them, and no other insight is correct. Could really be a jerk, but likes you as long as you contribute to the discussion.
He was ok. To be honest, I was disappointed. Everyone talked about how great he was, but I found him to be just ok. I did not particularly like his Shakespeare class, but I did enjoy his American Renaissance Lit class. Knows a lot about Faulkner. Lots of women love him, but I did not find him attractive.
I took Harrington for Hemingway..EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED, to say the least. His notes are sloppy, and he is obviously burnt out from teaching. He is offensive, and not in a funny way.Teaches his opinion only, NOT AN OPEN MINDED CLASS.
Dr. Harrington is one of the coolest teachers ever. If you like Jimi Hendrix and ex-hippies with creative style, you'll love him. He's hard, but he teaches you what you need to know. The only way people fail is if they just don't go. He knows the material and makes class fun
He knows Shakespeare, quoting passages, but don't look for discussions. He is strict, opinionated, and this class is strictly his way only. Take LOTS of notes, read -daily quizzes. I was excited to take this class BUT by the end just wanted to be finished. Don't look for a fun easy class even if your an English major. Don't take him if you aren't.
He WILL make you a better writer, whether you want to be or not. He's incredibly intelligent and is willing to depart his knowledge to those who are willing to listen. He offers help to those who feel they need it. If you have a love for theatre; you will love his classes.
I was nervous about taking this class since it was a 4 cred english class, but I really liked it! It is a harder class, don't get me wrong, and a lot of reading, but he taught me A LOT and he is intelligent. He gives quizzes every class but if you do the reading, they're very easy. He's helpful and answers questions clearly. Not many exams.
Worst, absolutely worst, teacher that I have ever had in my entire life. He is a disgrace to Salisbury University. Incredibly rude, and downright nasty. Avoid at all costs.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Took four courses of his and would have taken more if I had been given the opportunity. He isn't difficult...if you do the work. It's impossible to fail if you actually attend the class and do the reading. Not a professor for the lazy, which more than likely can be attributed to the poor reviews on here.
Dr. Harrington is great. I took his Shakespeare class, and he is so knowledgeable, its hard not to learn something new every class. You have to read in his class, but its an english class, thats to be expected. Tests and daily quizzes are easy if you keep up the reading and come to class.
You definately have to work reeeeeeally hard to pass this class. It kind of slacked off so I got a bad grade, but if you work hard and read what he tells you to and come to class (he gives quizzes almost every day) you'll be fine. Pretty funny but very tough.
HORRIBLE teacher,VERY rude. Gives daily quizzes,2 tests, and 2 in class essays which he grades VERY hard ex He'll take off a letter grade if he thinks your intro isn't good enough. You have to REALLY pay attention in class or you'll fail-and even if you do you could still fail cause what he asks for on test aren't things he teaches in class. AVOID.
He's really rude and uses his age as an excuse for it. Very hard class because he's a difficult grader. Don't take him if you just need a gen ed requirement it's not worth it.
Pretty cool guy. Little bit of a tough grader but not too bad. Not the easiest class but try hard and you'll at least get a B
Definitely not an easy professor but certainly an interesting one. He only requires for you to be in class 4 times a semester but still go! He gives a quiz every class on the readings. READ THE PLAYS! you can't get out of it, he purposefully uses things that aren't on spark notes. Overall a good class but there's a lot of work.
Professor Harrington is a very rude older man; He does not give you any mercy even when it is deserved. He sharpens the axe at your execution with a smile on his face. Junior transfer student from Flagler College in St. Augustine Fl; all I have to say is I have had my fair share of bad teachers and he absolutely tops the list.
Dr. Harrington is a funny guy and I honestly enjoyed all his lectures. But his class is very difficult (& I'm an English major). He gives quizzes EVERY class period & quizzes are EXTREMELY detail oriented. So detail oriented it's frustrating. Tough grader on exams and papers. I wouldn't recommend him but I did, however, enjoy his class.
He loves Shakespeare and expects you to pick up on every little detail. Make sure to write down everything he says. I was stressed out each class and I did the readings! If you take good notes and study you should do okay on the tests. I got a "B" and worked my butt off. I don't think he gives out many A's. Participate and don't yawn in class!!
Dr. Harrington is an incredibly intelligent man who really wants you to succeed in his class. The work load is heavy, but it is completely manageable if you budget your time well. His exams are derived straight from his notes. If you've memorized your notes, you'll get the A. Meet with him during office hours! He is more than willing to help.
He is very knowledgeable and good at explaining the plays' details but that's all. The tests have an interesting format but they're very easy as long as you show up to class and take notes. He gives a quiz every class period so make sure you read carefully. Will rudely call you out for yawning in class. I sat in the front and had to hide them
Gary Harrington can be your best professor or you will drop the class day 1. I had him for Shakespeare and the man knows his stuff. Don't yawn or use your cell phone during class. I worked by ass off and was proud of getting a B. If you like to skip, don't take his classes, you will fail.
Dr. Harrington will push you to your academic limits. He is very passionate about his craft, and will expect the same enthusiasm out of his students. Get ready to read many novels, ansd you better have a lot of analytical points. There is nothing more rewarding than getting an A in his class.
Dr. Harrington at first glace may seem like he's going to be the most difficult professor, but that is far from the case. He is VERY knowledgeable about Shakespeare; ask him anything and he'll probably know it. Read the plays by the syllabus because there's a 5 question quiz every class and the first exam is a bit tough, but overall great class!
Shakespeare is such a hard subject for me, however extremely bearable with Dr. Harrington. He is a VERY hard grader, and looks for specific things in both the tests and in-class essays. He gives quizzes every class, but if you read you'll be fine. He truly does care and know about the material he's teaching. Just don't yawn and you'll be fine.
I have Dr. Harrington for art of the drama, and let me tell you its a bit rough. Super tough grader, you need to know your stuff coming into class. You absoutlely need the textbook to read all the plays, he gives a quiz each class that are pretty basic. 2 in class essays and 2 exams, thats it. Funny and smart dude, just dont yawn
Dr Harrington is one of the best professors as SU hands down. He has so much knowledge about the plays and really makes you enjoy the class. He can seem rather strict but as long as you pay attention you will be fine.
Expect not to learn. He tells you that day 1. He is right. Know the work going in to the course and re-re-read the acts before class. Course best suited with easier courses in your schedule. Daily quizzes are brutal: in depth to simple. Left guessing every time. It is just intense. Read every night and still felt like I didn't understand the exams.
Very arrogant professor who counts his opinion as fact and worships Shakespeare. If you copy down everything he says and regurgitate it back to him on the test you will pass no problem but if you are a free thinking individual who would like to form their own thoughts and opinions beware. Creativity is not needed for this class.
A true legend
A true legend he is! His favorite sayings are, "we may never know" and "It's phallic". Surprised we don't have a national holiday for this guy, he basically is a living shakespeare... but better, because he seems to know shakespeare's play better than shakespeare himself. " Heroes get remembered but legends never die"-sandlot. Love, Gary's #1 fan
He is a very rude teacher, he does not listen to anyone else's opinion. He thinks that he is right no matter what! Teaches very different than other teachers, he is not understanding. The first thing he said when we started class on the first day was "A lot of people drop this class". Horrible.
He's definitely not for everyone, but as far as knowing the content, he may be the best prof the English department has. If you do the reading (at least twice) and go to class, you'll be fine. He doesn't require you to go to class, bu if you skip, you're missing a lot of important content for the exams. He's rough around the edges, but hedoes care.
He was a really great professor. At first I thought he would be really tough but if you come to class and look over your notes youll surely pass
Difficult exams determine the majority of your grade. 5 question quizzes everyday based on reading. 3 exams, 1 in-class essay. Attendance isn't mandatory, but missing class can be very detrimental. Anything he says could be on an exam. If you forget your book, you automatically fail the quiz. No final.
Dr. Harrington is amazing! I took him for American Lit II this semester and he is so knowledgable and passionate about the subject! Im taking him for Shakespeare next semester and Im so excited! You have to do every reading or you will have a hard time in the class, but that can be said for any Lit course. 100% recommend!!
Dr. Harrington is smart. You're in school to get smart aren't ya? Take him while you can.
Required reading for each class with a quiz at the beginning of class on each reading. Exams require critical thinking, not memorization. He is a very good professor, just be ready to put work in
I wouldnt recommend if you aren't an English major. There's a quiz each class on tedious details. Each exams is to make 5 analytical points on 10 items. He doesnt offer any help. Hes unwilling to give feedback on things you got wrong, or give advice on how to do better. He doesn't allow laptops, nor does he write things on the board. He sucks!
Professor Harrington is an amazing professor! Class was composed of lectures and quizzes based on the plays read prior to each class. Tests were to make analytical points on chosen items regarding the plays. If you go to every class and take thorough notes on his lectures (and read the plays of course) you will thrive in the class!
Please avoid this professor. Quiz every class, don't use Sparknotes- you need to read the texts to pass. Exams are extremely tough, and based on his opinion if what you wrote was right. He will not offer feedback, and will not help you with anything, he is extremely rude to students. Doesn't use MyClasses. Doesn't allow laptops. Don't yawn.
Tough teacher, but I leave class having retained everything he said. Quizzes each class to make sure you did the reading and they're VERY detail oriented; exams are to make 5 analytical points for a specific text. Note taking is crucial for passing his class, and always have your book for class (he checks!). Hoping to have him for Shakespeare!
Reading quizzes every class. Youre screwed for the exam if you miss class. Exams are TOUGH. Screw up on one or two and you cant recover. Doesnt use MyClasses. Can be a bit rude at times. Be ready to discuss the stories, because thats all the class is, discussion. Hes an alright professor, just difficult to do well in.
Took an exam and got no notes back. Despite a great effort in the class and many hours spent studying for the exam, I still did poorly. The grades are not clear and he does not utilize online grading. You get a snapshot of your current grade at the return of your first exam.
Harrington is AWFUL. His lectures are all over the place. If you can't make several analytical points on obscure bits of the reading, then don't take him. 100% the worst class I've ever taken. If your points aren't exactly what he said in class then you aren't getting credit for them. Absolutely awful.
You have to work hard for your grade or you will end up failing. Participation from the reading in class is required and attendance is mandatory. His exams rely on the notes taken in class. He is not as bad as other reviews say though. I respect him as a professor and he will like you if you participate in class.
This class is really hard. Like there are way easier english credits. But, if you're looking for an extravagant professor who is incredibly passionate and teaches interesting subjects, this is your guy. Personally I loved him, he was so engaging and made sure we actually learned in the class. Would really recommend him if you have extra time.
Ridiculous. Tests and quizzes are all memorization-your thoughts do not matter. Anxiety and stress inducing-not like workplace or real life anxieties. You are wrong if it's not a point he made. Nit picky and comes across as bitter and rude. Disappointed in SU for fostering this environment while also preaching inclusion and respect.
Good teacher for short stories but is very strict. You cannot have your phone out at any time during class or you will get 10 point deducted from your overall grade, as well as not bring your book to class. You have to hand write your notes and you read 1-3 stories for home work and get quizzed every class.Tests are analyzing the stories you read.
