Genius, very funny, friendly, patient, creative, wrote the class book
Fast and tough

This class is not for slackers or procrastinators. this is one of the hardest classes i have ever taken! he expects a lot from you, although your writing will improve 100 x's. great professor, but tough! easy to fall behind. id rather be taking physics.
Great guy and fun class but not an easy one. Very tough essay grader. If you dont want to write 10 essays do not take. I enjoyed the class even tho it was very difficult.
He gave out 6 essays for the semester and grades super hard. Get on his good side in the beginning and you'll have a better chance of scoring a good grade. He grades really hard and his class is tough.
mr. hoffman is an incredible, amazing teacher who truly cares about his students and helping them become the best writers they can be by breaking traditional molds. Be prepared to work hard, but learn great material from an awesome passionate teacher.

Beware of professors who include their own book on the syllabus. I thought I would learn about original writing style , however, this class was more focused on Gary's narcissism. To sum him up: imagine an unsuccessful, second rate Woody Allen wannabe!
Hard class!! Fast pace and not for slackers. If you want to become an excellent writer, then take his class.
He's a HARD teacher but he's very good. I learned so much from that class and the classics we read are well taught and analyzed. Good in class open discussions. I was very impressed even though i didn't do as well as i would have liked. =)
I am currently taking Gary's Bible Lit class and am so intruiged with his style of teaching. He's awesome, though the class is quite hard. Attend every class and you'll be okay. He's so intelligent that he's oddly sexy.
You need to understand that you don't have your own opinion on literature in this class. He has no tolerance for students who don't follow his direction as he is teaching from his own text. He is angry that he is not published and understood as a literary genius. Follow directions for an A.
Hard class, but it will make you a better writer...great reading, movies and discussion. He is an amazing professor and a really nice guy.
Gary was great! He was always very helpful, and he really wants his students to become better writers. He is not an easy grader, but if you do put everything he wants in the paper in a creative way then you will do fine.
One of my top 5 Prof. in my college career including university Prof's. Have to be prepared to put some work into his class but you will become a better writer in the end. Grades his papers on the tough side but gives you a chance to revise them. Quality teacher and human being, plus has the best dry sense of humor.
Favorite prof EVER. the class is hard, and the assignments are unique, but my writing is infinitely better because of gary's class. not for jc morons who want an easy a, or english major wannabes who don't know how to really read. very funny, very nice guy.

Fantastic way of teaching. Extremely helpful. Humorous. Tough class.
He is a bad teacher plain and simple. First he teaches out of his own book which is very boring and therefor is bias. If you try to say what you think in the class you will be shut down, he sucks.

tough class, but worth every second. class discussions are fantastic, broad, fun, and always based in the literature. bible as lit was the best class i've taken in four years.

Probably one of the most interesting classes i've ever taken with a very knowledgable professor, granted he can be stuck in his own view on issues and unwilling to accept opposition to it.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!! TEACHES OUT OF HIS OWN BOOK! He expects everyone to know what HE is talking about from the first time he talks. He wants things in his essay but then goes the other way in his grading method. IF YOU CAN HELP IT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS! TAKE SOMEONE ELSE BUT NOT HIM!! DO NOT TAKE HIM..I repeat..DO NOT TAKE HIM
Great class! A new movie every session, loose discussion afterwards, and a total of six papers per semester. His teaching is funny, honest, VERY articulate and rooted in reality rather than just books and movies. His criteria for the papers are wacky (taught from his own book of writing techniques) but ultimately pretty interesting and useful.
the guy knows a lot about english, which helped me out a lot, and lectures are great because he doesnt hold back and drops a couple F bombs here and there. the assignments are not too hard. just go to class because attendance helps in the end, read your assignments, and take notes. he's an asset to OCC. take his class if you want a challenge.
This class is very hard for anyone that does not like writing or does not have hours to waste. Will make you a better writter but is far to hard for being an Eng. 100. Take another teacher if you can.
Challenging class but you will learn a lot--everytime you write, you will be reminded to be DETAILED DETAILED DETAILED. i loved his sarcasm and dry humor and he also made me a better writer;you must purchase his book.
I heard people say he was a bad teacher, who didn't know how to teach! well, i loved his class! sure, papers are a little hard to write but put some effort into it! his stories are great, with lots of lessons to be learned from. He's a great, energetic and funny teacher! it was fun having him!
Best professor EVER! Loved every minute of his class. As long as you participate and care about your writing you will do great. He is not an easy "A"! Best english class I have ever taken! Take this class if you have a passion for English. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Excellent! If you were evertold you could write but felt you understood your own stuf - this guy clarifies it, he brings it out and suddenly your writing like you hear it in your head!
A lot of reading, at least for his English 161 class. You are required to buy a new book every week, you have about 4 days to finish the book, and then write a paper on it. His papers are challenging to write. I enjoy witting, but when it came to his class, i just had no passion to write his papers. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIS CLASS.
Interesting teacher--teaches out of his own book. Alot of the writing assingments are even based off the book. Don't expect to coast through the class, but expect to learn alot and really improve your writing. You can e-mail him for help and he will help you in class. Great teacher. I'd recommend him to anyone.
I do not like that he teaches our of his own book, there is something sort of vain about that. Also, he thinks he's an incredible ground breaking teacher, when I havn't been using the CD CM CM essay method since early highschool. I also strongly disliked every essay topic. He's not very motivating.
Professor Hoffman is not a great teacher. His fowl language and derogatory statements about women detract from his teaching. He also cannot not separate his anger towards God and the church from his teaching environment, thus making the class sometimes a miserable environment to learn in.
I would not recomend him at all. I feel I have become a worse writer from taking this class. I got a B in the class. He is very inconsistant and way to hard of a grader. Back away from this horrible teacher. plase save your self.
Mr Hoffman has to be hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had. Yes, I got a C in his class but his book is so helpful and I will carry it through my graduate studies. His dry humor and sarcasm is refreshing and he has a way of making the class feel cohesive..we were all oddly close. A+++ for Gary Hoffman!!!
I dont know why everyone said he's a bad teacher. But I love him. He's really funny. The thing is he's not very organized. When writing essays, he gives you a prompt but it doesnt explain anything at all. Also if you did not learn anyone of his Adio's techniques in another class. Your screwed since his class essays are based on Adios.
I took Gary's honor class and really enjoyed him as a person. However, as a teacher I would never recommend him. He wrote his own book for the class and has essentially created his own writing style. He is also very vague in his assignments. If you catch on that you need to mimic this "style" that no one else uses you should get an A.
ok mr. hoffman is a super cool guy, but not the greatest teacher. He definently plays favorites. I took his honors class and he teaches out of his own book which sucks. You have to formulate your essays to his liking or you will not do well. This class was my first c.
Very ,very BIASED angainst Christians and Christianity. Promotes his own twisted world view- sad man who married a student and wants to push his own agenda. Makes you buy his own book- questionable ethics for a person who hates Christians
Took 4 Bible as Lit. Emphasis on close reading. Gary definitely pro-Jesus's spirit. Not sure where anti-Christian stuff is coming from? Class hard for fundamentalists who don't really want to study Bible as lit or whose religion forbids interpretation of Bible. Gary encourages discussion, but you need to support yourself. Great class
will work you hard, but you will learn creative techniques for your writing. A plus that he uses his own book which is cheap and has creative tips and examples from lots of writers.
Always fair to all students, doesn't pick favorites and welcomes all opinions, but will challenge students. Good about taking petitioners
Great professor! He really explains the British literature very well with his use of sarcasm, wit, and theatrics. He's a great professor who really gets into the material. His papers are definitely very challenging. If you're not a good writer, don't take this class. If you dislike a lot of heavy reading, again, not for you. Overall, thumbs up.
There was lots of work to do, he teaches from his own book and grades based upon his style of teaching, which was helpful. I enjoyed class, he is an interesting person. If you put in the effort you will get a good grade. I didn't spend as much time on my essay's as I should have and still ended up with a B. He is not for everyone.
Gary is a really good teacher. He taught me a lot about improving my writing and by the end of the semester I felt really confident. The research paper is really lame but most of the assignments are interesting. I didn't do a lot of the assigned reading but it was fine; I just skimmed the books before class. He calls on you randomly so be ready!
While his class was interesting, I am now at Cal, and everything he taught me about writing I have thrown out the window. Useless style lessons and too much emphasis on his own book. I liked him a lot but am frustrated at the back tracking I had to do with his lessons.
A "real" Honors class with challenging assignments at University level. Does use his own book which is inexpensive and offers both unusual and traditional tools for writing--more helpful the most. Not afraid to talk about any subject.
This teacher litterally wrote the book Adios! It's used all over and introduces unique, entertaining techniques for catching and keeping the readers attention while making the point clear and specific.
Prof. Hoffman is a nice guy, but you can only make British Literature before 1800 so interesting. This class is a requirement for english students, and it feels like he feels required to teach it.
What a waste of time that was. I ended up at CSUF where whatever he was teaching was useless.
A super challenging and time-consuming course. But he's always there to help you. do the reading and email him for help. He's a great teacher who definitely knows his stuff.
He makes you believes you are a top-notch writer but then I transferred to UCLA and can't get passing grades on my paper. Telescoping may be in at OCC but my profs laughs at me at UCLA.
One of the most challenging but rewarding classes that I've taken here so far. It's an interesting class & he knows how to teach. Be prepared to put a lot of time into this class. He was very helpful with any questions/revising.
I find the last entry to be incorrect. I have used the technqiues and gotten lots of compliments both in my college career and at work. Perhaps the last rater isn't getting good results for other reasons.
Time consuming but rewarding. All the essays use concepts from the book Adios Strunk and Wine which he wrote. The concepts can be confucing but ask him for help if you are confused! Trust me, you will be sorry if you don't. Be patient, he grades kind of hard on the essays. The final is a meeting with him where he grades 3 essays of yours.
Makes Brit Lit, most of which is pretty dry and challenging, interesting. He does try to get students to critically examine aspects of Bible as they relate to the lit and this may be upsetting to those who have never read the Bible that way or just never read. But definitely is pro-Jesus.
Mr. Hoffman is a very tough teacher, but I really enjoyed his class. It's very time consuming, but even with my skills of procrastination I got an A. If nothing seems to make any sense just go ahead and ask him, he is very helpful.
Mr. Hoffman is awesome. British Lit. before 1800 is by no means an easy class, but he makes it fun and keeps it entertaining with hit dry wit and dirty sense of humor. Everything you read in the class is scandalous in some way. If you are sensitive and get offended easily, don't take his class. The assignments make you a much better writer as well.
Toughest class I had last semester, but extremely rewarding. Teaches his own style to writing, but is willing to look through your drafts through email as many times as you ask. Extremely helpful when you email him. Class discussion was always interesting and engaging. Lots of reading but most of it's spaced out far enough so you can catch up.
Mr.Hoffman is a fun teacher who opens a world for discussion IF HE WAS A SPEECH TEACHER. Unfortuantly he teaches from his own book which causes the problem that if you have a question from the book all he does is tell you to read the book . He changes the assignments 2 days before the actual due date and forgets what is assigned. Its a waste of time
He teaches only to sell his book, which is a joke. . . avoid at all costs
Regarding last raters comments--Hoffman's book is cheap, cheap, cheap-less than $20 new. As opposed to my last Eng text $50 plus. I like his fresh ideas about writing & maybe Hoffy's style isn't 4 all, but creative types will benefit from his steal of a book and approach.
Two books are needed to succeed: Adios Strunk and White and Best American Essays. Expect to study both textbooks each week to make sure your writing uses the methods correctly. If you have any questions make sure you ask (He makes sure to answer any questions you have). Highly suggest taking his class.
hard class. get ready to work.
Ok, he is not easy, but an "A" in his class is a real "A." You can email him for help and his approach, although non-traditional, will speak to many creative types. He helps you be creative even if you are not.
Avoid at all costs. His grading is very bias.
For Reviewer who says he is biased. Perhaps he is--against lazy students who don't put out any effort. For those willing to put out a little effort and interest in their own writing you will definitely get a big return.
Pros not alot of reading, great selection of lit Cons: teaches it like a writing class using his style, which if it doesn't work for you, your grade is basically sunk. He will try to help you, but you will just end up more confused and frustrated. I recommend him if you have no ability to write. But if you come from AP & are already good, run.
I disagree with last rater. He is not afraid to talk about religion as it relates to the literature and is SUPER pro-Jesus or pro Christian spirit, or what Jesus stands for, but that is not to say he isn't critical of not just Christianity, but all organized religious equally.
Opinionated? Yes. Provocative? Yes. But he allows debate and will go as far as you want in a debate. Certainly he is not for every student--especially those who are not used to having assumptions challenged, but he is lively and passionate about the literature.
Gary's classes are capable of producing the most interesting discussions that any student will experience. His interpretations of certain works will offend some, which he warns students about on the first meetings of every sememster. He's compelling--but he is by no means an easy teacher.
Mr. Hoffman is an excellent teacher, although his approach to writing may be eccentric, it is very beneficial to inspiring creativity. Not the easiest class, but an A is a deserved A in his class. He is helpful, funny and never boring. I enjoyed showing up to his class. Make sure you do the reading and learn the style and you will pass this class.

interesting. funny. you can say how you really feel without being scared of it effecting your grade. thought provoking. REALLY hard to get an A...ONLY "B" i got in an honors course. do not procrastinate. must keep current on reading. ask for help and send samples of ur writing...hes good at responding with feedback. HATED strunk and white.
I LOVE Gary Hoffman. He encourages you to speak your mind - he has strong opinions but doesn't force them upon anybody. He teaches you to defend your own thoughts and, though his assignments are difficult, you WILL get an A if you're dedicated. Just keep up with the readings and do the work, and participate in class!
Easily one of the best English classes I've taken so far. Gary is funny, challenging, and thought-provoking in all the right ways. Not a good class for lazy students or people who procrastinate, but if you're willing to work and want to take an interesting class, then Gary Hoffman is for you.
Great professor! Make sure you read, take notes in your books, and prepare to contribute to class discussions, even if you have questions. He helps explain older works, but does prefer it if you give his insights back to him in your papers. His classes are delightful and interesting, and are perfect if you love class discussion.
Not an easy class, but a great teacher. His writing techniques are hard to get at first but in the end it will make your writing more interesting. Don't expect an easy A, make sure you do all of the readings and don't try to B.S. your papers (expect to write about 9). Great teacher over all but be prepared to work.
He gave WAY to much homework and was hard on students.
Its a really hard class to take if you have a job, other classes, or struggle in english.
A great professor, class discussions are fun,but this class is not easy by any means. Sometimes he can be a little unclear, but just ask him and he'll do his best to clarify. I really did not enjoy this class because I had a heavy workload, but if you're really looking to learn something and you quite a bit of time on your hands, he's for you.
Teacher is very hard! he is very smart and knows what he is doing but this class is only for great writers. if your not a great writer avoid his class. he is one of the hardest graders i have ever taken!
Emphasis of close reading of American Lit--the selections arranged thematically rather. Essays and assignments help to analyze works--not for students who just want to take True/False exams. Hoff helps act out the literature
Gary is an amazing professor and one of my favorites but his class is by no means an easy A. You are required to buy 3 different books and they are vital to do well in the class. The essays can be complicated and take time, but they are interesting and fun to write. I got an A in the class but it took a lot of time and effort. I learned a lot.
This is NOT an easy class, especially if you've never taken any of his other classes. The textbook used is one that he wrote and is filled with techniques that I'm pretty sure he just made up. The class is especially difficult if you have literally anything else going on in your life.
Not an easy A if that is what you are after. Essays can't be fudged the night before the due date. Helpful if you make the time to discuss your work. I got an A but I put in 20 hrs a week outside of class. If you have a life, this class is not for you! That being said, he's amazing and makes you work. That's what college is for.
He is rarely clear about his assignments, but is great at making sure you improve your writing greatly by the time the semester is over. There are no tests and about seven essayspapers throughout the course. The reading is very interesting but you must have a note on every page. The reading is relatively easy and you learn a lot.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, and I was pretty surprised. He's a cool dude but literally the hardest grader. He cares about his students but I would NEVER take another of his class, nor recommend it to anyone. His papers are the most ridiculous assignments and the books you have to read are so difficult and a lot of pages.
GPA Killer is all I have to say about him. His class isn't there to help you become a good writer. It's for people who are already prolific writers and decide to enter a class competition like Hunger Games. His grading is subjective and arbitrary. You put 20+ into one essay and still get a C or lower because he didn't like your sentences.
I'll never forget the first week of his 101H class. There were about 40 people in the beginning of the semester, by the time the semester was over there were only 7 that finished the class. If English isn't your first language don't take him; he'll even tell you that. I remember he told a girl to drop his class bc she had too many ESL mistakes
If I knew this website existed before I registered for college I would have avoided Hoffman at all costs His class is not easy and requires time but every hour spent dedicated to this class is so worth it. He transforms you into the amazing writer and reader you never knew you could be. An A is possible! Greatest professor I know I will ever have
He was the worst professor I ever had. He is very vague when you email him for feedback. He wants you to find your own style of writing, however if you do not write in the style he wants, you will probably fail. My writing skill became worse after taking his class. Avoid at all cost.
Professor Hoffman offers a very unique viewpoint on life with the books you're assigned. It's essential to read between the lines for your papers. He gives you ample time to e-mail in 10 lines at a time, so definitely take advantage of that. Most importantly, participate and take good notes on what others have to say. Class is for careful readers.
He's a really chill professor (told stories and extended essay due dates)--only the work is undesirable. Annotations take up a LOT of time unless you're good at BSing on the spot when he calls on you. Essay grading isn't that hard--JUST follow his book/writing style and get his critique.I did my essays the night before/morning of and got high/B's.
Be ready to read a lot and take annotations. You will need to use his style of writing in your essay which is basically good grammar & "revision techniques." He isn't as mean as people make him sound. Halfway through the term, he gave an easy essay prompt to boost our grades. As long as you put in the effort and follow the prompt, you'll be fine.
I took his class last year, and now I am at UCLA as an English major. I didn't do very well in his class, so I was convinced I was going to do worse once I transferred. My professors at UCLA kept asking me, "who taught you these awful techniques"? I stopped using Hoffman's writing advice since then, and have had nothing but straight A's in college.
Yes, this class is tough. You're actually going to have to spend time brainstorming and formatting essays instead of winging it the night before. You're going to have to read a lot. And maybe you won't use these techniques ever again. But Mr. Hoffman will definitely challenge your capabilities. As long as you communicate with him, he's very helpful
Began w/ 35 students at the end of the semester, only 14. Yes, your techniques; freights, splicing, etc. make sense, but aren't the only ingredients that constitute good penmanship (how bout content) In this class if its not inappropriate then it isn't interesting He used the term sodomy in class as an example to explain euphemism from his own book
If you provide evidence for the statements you make in this class, he will respect you; if you cannot, this class will teach you to do so and more. While I am not a fan of the writing style he teaches, practicing a style that feels unnatural to me expanded the diversity of my own voice and gave me a stronger grasp on complex grammar use.
I never knew a human being could make English such an awful subject. STAY AWAY! He doesn't care about your evidence.
This was by far the hardest class Ive ever taken at OCC. The ending class grade is only based on 5 essays you write throughout the year (which are extremely difficult). He is such a tough grader because he wants you to write like him and nothing else will suffice. Overall, If you want to break out of your writing skill comfort zone, take his class
If you want a boring, typical, run-of-the-mill Eng100 ,don't sign up for his class. If you want to learn how to write so your reader is anticipating every next word and is totally enthralled in your story, take his class! He is very intelligent, experienced, humorous, and a supportive professor that teaches you how to be a better writer and reader.
Gary forces students to use evidence correctly, teaches techniques that allow for diverse/interesting writing, and will clearly explain his tough grading. A teacher to leave you asking more of their opinion. I was a mockable writer before this class. Teaches content rarely found, worldly searched for. Class for seekers of better writing, all tiers.
Hoffman is an amazing teacher. he is very sweet and extremely funny. everyone making negative comments about him are those who got scared because they thought his class was going to be too much work and just ended up dropping. the writing style he teaches you is original and borderline creative genius. his class is enjoyable as well.
By far the best English teacher I have ever had. It's definitely not an easy A, but if you're looking for a class that is interesting and genuinely want to improve your writing then take this class. He will help your writing go from high school level to college level. Just be ready to put in some work!
Take at your own risk. Hes not an awful teacher if you love writing. If you know your writing skills are great and want a good challenge take his class. But if you dont want to change your writing techniques and be left confused most of the time, dont take his class. He does mention in the beginning of the class that his class is not easy.
I'm not the best writer so I struggled in this class. Your entire writing style is based on a book he wrote. It is not a traditional way of writing which can be tricky to some people. He sets deadlines for papers so the class can work on it together. Not the toughest grader, but dreaded his assignments and way of teaching. Put the work in, get a B.
Dont take I repeat dont take. He teaches English from his OWN book he wrote. Doesnt make sense to all the other years Ive taken English. His style is very different and may be difficult for some people. He expects a lot and was unfair during the pandemic. Didnt understand that people were going through things and still was expecting a lot.
Prof. Hoffman is not tough; he just expects students to do work. Old school. I blew my first paper but he worked with me and got mostly As after that. He used a textbook he wrote that has lots of examples from many different writers. Hes funny and manys toy think about your life. A real college level experience for mature students.
I took Professor Hoffman pre-COVID and after reflecting on my experience, although I do appreciate the avant-garde writing style of his and the interesting reading material, the writing style taught is based on his own thoughts about wording. Not a class to take for genuine legitimate workplace writing knowledge, rather eccentric narrative style.
If you already have a solid understanding of grammar and are looking for some cool techniques to spice up your writing, this is the perfect class for you. Mr. Hoffman is an amazing teacher!
Honestly, if you want an easy English class, don't take it, he teaches from his own book and if you don't get it perfect he isn't helpful. He tries to teach you to be a better writer but for a class you have to pass to get general ed done he makes it so difficult. If you don't care about writing better, don't take this class, get another proffesor
You have to buy his book, even if you decide to drop later. Makes up rules and ideas you need to write a paper with. Gives feedback but goes against it when grading.
1. The professor is incredibly opinionated in a class that should be open to many perspectives (this reflects in papers as well) 2. You have to buy his book and follow his way of writing 3. After he went over my paper during his in-class review, he told that my paper was "A level" but ultimately gave me a C.
This professor is very difficult, for a general ED this shouldn't be very difficult, he over complicates conjunctions and forces you to adhere to his writing style. Due dates and expectations are very tiring 11 am in the morning. Personally as a person who isn't a early bird, his class is mentally draining, confusing, and time consuming. DONT TAKE
If you are looking for an easy A, Professor Hoffman's English 101 may not meet your goal. However, if you actually want to learn how to read and write essays with critical thinking about books that cover many psychological, and emotional aspects of humans, the class is perfect. Other than that, his freighting and literary techniques are gorgeous.
This class was one of the hardest I have taken but it was so worth it. The readings and the essays are very challenging but they force you to think and write in a way you probably haven't before. I loved our eye opening class discussions on the readings. I will forever be a better writer, thinker, and student because of Professor Hoffman's class!
Professor Hoffman is one of the best teachers I have had in college so far. He is smart, caring, and engaging, encouraging participation. Highly recommended for anyone looking to greatly improve their writing. Every paper assigned he offered his own personal proofreading (with suggestions for edit) nearly all the way up until the paper's due date!
He already has his own opinions about the works he makes you read so if you try to stray from it, he rejects it. He teaches from his own textbook he wrote and teaches an advanced writing technique. If you're looking for just credit and not bothered about getting a good grade, take him. If you're looking for a good grade, don't take his class.
5 essays, 7 books to buy, about 3 movies watched. he grades on his own opinion, there is no clear rubric. out of the original 30-40 ppl that started the class, only about 14 stayed til the very end. do not recommend if you want an easy A
I'm not a fan of reading and I still enjoyed this class! You have to be willing to do the readings, assignments and participate. He is kind and fair. The matieral was interesting, definitely not another boring english class! DO RECCOMMEND.
Professor Hoffman is a difficult but good professor. If you are looking for an easy A, he might not be for you, but if you are willing to put in the work to learn, he offers a great way to write differently than any high school teacher you've had before. He is caring and offers to revise papers up until the due date-- so take advantage of it!
Getting an A: taking mindful notes on each paragraph of every assigned essay and textbook chapter, ready to contribute to class discussions when called upon; writing each paper in the outlined steps and timeframe, emailing ~10 lines of your drafts to Professor Hoffman for valuable grade-boosting feedback; and re-reading textbook chapters. Not easy.
I learned a lot, but there is a lot of reading and work you have to put into the class. You must read the textbook and novels. Participation matters a lot, so take good notes as you read and during lectures. You also have to adapt your writing style to the textbook or you will not get good grades. Also, more than 1/2 of the class dropped.
He gives so much reading and they are so hard to understand. The essays are graded extremely harshly and I do not recommend taking his class. more than half the class dropped the course.
Don't take this class unless ur truly passionate about learning new writing styles. He makes you follow his weird style of writing on top of analyzing so its very difficult to get an A. He goes off topic in the middle of lectures & doesn't offer a lot of revision help. Over half the class dropped. Take Chris Evan's class instead.
This guy was horrendous, I took him for two weeks during Spring before dropping because there is literally tons of other professors with better teaching styles. His weird writing style he makes you use makes it impossible to earn a good grade on your writing, even if you come from a strong writing background. Worst Professor I have ever had
Uses his own textbook (Adios) and because of that he is highly critical when reviewing your paper. The writing style he teaches is not practical and you will probably never use what you learned outside of class. That said, there are students who do well. Just make sure that you follow his guidelines EXACTLY, even if it seems off
Let me "bust" some RMP myths about Prof Hoff: Myth One--Hard class: After getting my first "C" in English I talked to him & then got all "A"s. Myth two--Makes you use "his" style: You are required to use some long sentences & other stuff in your papers but things that all writers use. Not the Prof for everyone, but class was not what others say.
Professor Hoffman is one of a kind! He uses his own textbook that he, and his wife Glynis, created based on their own writing styles and techniques! Since he is very familiar with his techniques, it is simple for him to help and encourage you to strengthen your essays. His weekly readings are also entertaining and easy to scan for style and flow.
Professor Hoffman's ENG101 class is no easy A, but it's incredibly rewarding if you're willing to put in the work. His unique writing style takes adjusting, but the in-depth discussions and feedback make you a better thinker and writer. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for quiz prep.
Do Not Take. No rubric, grades are given based on how much he liked your paper. You have to write in his style or you'll get an F. Half the books you read are books he wrote. Ive had to purchase about 8 books in this class. Your entire grade is based off 5 papers. I am an A student and I have to spend 30+ hours on a 2 page paper just to get a B.
Don't take if you can avoid. I had him last semester and I swear on every dollar in my bank account that there are better professors than him. Do not listen to the good reviews that say "try rlly hard" to get an A. U are much better off taking literally any other professor. Remember, college is ur oyster, fine tune ur future with good professors
One of the best professors I've ever taken at OCC. I genuinely wouldn't have been able to get the opportunities I have now without his teaching. Even though the class is difficult, it taught me how to make my writing unique which helped me to transfer, get internships, and much more. If you're looking to improve your writing, this class is it.
Don't take this professor if you don't want to lose your sanity. His writing style is weird and mostly impractical. You have to rely on his feedback in order to get a good grade on your essays (which isn't guaranteed). You have to buy at least 5 books, it's an expensive class. Take someone else.
Don't take this class. He requires you to buy his own textbooks, and I have dropped $350 for this class ALONE. He's writing style must be yours too, or else he does not give your paper a fair shot, even if it is an objectively good paper. Save yourself and pick a different professor, even though he makes his class seem like a breeze.
Yes the class is difficult but don't let that scare you. He gives you multiple chances to redo your paper and will regrade until the final due date. I learned A LOT from his course on how to write well. I used his techniques when applying to transfer and for internships. I got all of them.
I respect Gary Hoffman a lot as a professor, but his class is difficult. I've always been an A student, until this class. If english is not your strongest class I definitely would recommend a different professor.
my god this man is insane
class is hard but i improved my writing so much because of him. started off with a C but got to an A because he grades off improvement. mister gary is a cool guy but not an easy A. submit lots of drafts for him to critique. hated the way he made us write at first because i had never done anything like it before but the class was very worthwhile
