Gary is awesome! He is fun and really nice, but the class is a lot of work. He is VERY strict about attendance. One missed class drops your grade. Another missed class, he recommends you drop the course. It's a lot of reading, but he cuts it down if you need him to. Definitely recommend him for this class, it's really fun :)
Gary is a really nice guy. He gives a good amount of work, but plenty of time to do it. Read the assignment chart! He won't tell you when assignments are due until the week of. Overall Gary is really friendly to the students and wants us to succeed. The class is very interesting and is an eye opener. I highly recommend it.
Homana is a really sweet guy who just wants everyone to succeed. He lets you do corrections on all the papers you hand in until you get the grade that you want. Basically, he is begging you to get an "A". There is no final, just readings and a few papers, but nothing too demanding. I would DEFINITELY recommend him!
He is very nice, yet can be rather annoying at times. Just beginning with this course, so he has not quite mastered everything on how to teach it. I would recommend him, but you do not really learn any new information that you already did not know.
There is entirely too much reading for one person handle. Also, the assignments sneak up on you, and his expectations are extremely unclear. The advantage to making mistakes is that rewrites are available.
This class is horrible. Too much reading! You have to have 4 chapters or sections to read for each class. This means almost 150 pages for each class. The only positive thing is that he lets you do corrections on your papers. If you do not like having "conversations" do not take this class. It is all discussion.
Gary is really nice! He lets you rewrite any paper as many times until you get an A. he listens to all students and their opinions. if you think there is too much reading (which there is) he cuts it back a bit. theres a lot of work but he wants everyone to get an A so he makes it very easy. it's his 1st semester at tu. he's great! take him!
He's a nice person but not the great teacher. It was his first semester teaching this course so it's understandable but there was a lot of readings and a ton of work. It's not all hard but he's not very organized with the assignments. There is an assignment sheet. Attendance is mandatory. Grade will dropped with each absence. Wasn't my fav class.
Had Dr. Homana for Foundations of Ed at UMD. GREAT teacher, really nice, and genuinely interested in seeing everyone succeed. As others have said, he does require a lot of reading, but the book we had was pretty interesting. He has no problems calling you out if you aren't reading. Just read the book. Seriously. Read it.
He grew on me by the end of the semester. He assigns a lot of readings but he was open to my class's suggestions to cut out a lot of stuff. He offers rewrites and really wants us to think about urban education. It's basically a discussion class so it can get awkward and he's awkward too so it ended up being funny. I would take him if I were you!
Gary's a really cool guy pretty laid back. Basically A LOT of discussion even though you aren't graded on it. He does assign a good bit of readings but you just have to do a quick summary. The rest of the grades include a few presentations and a paper which you can rewrite. He's a pretty fair grader but he doesn't tolerate you missing class.
Really great teacher, very helpful and very laid back. Lets you call him Gary. A LOT of work in this class but do it all and you will definitely get an A. Be sure to stay on top of things or you will drown in all the work he assigns. If you're not organized be prepared for many long nights. No exams though! Definitely recommend!
If you do not like to read do not take this class. Every day something is due, which is at least 2 pages typed based on readings. It is easy to bs the work since there aren't tests, but there is A LOT of work to do. There are 3 papers and 2 presentations along with the multiple assignments. You will never have a night off. Not recommended
so much work in this class! reflections every class and 2 presentations, very easy grader but he sucks at teaching. run the other way!!!!
Gary has way too many assignments. He is also extremely liberal. he is a tough grader. the assignments and projects are demanding. Good luck. dont take the class
I found Gary to be an awesome professor. There is a lot of reading and written homework, however there are no tests and he is a very easy grader. If you go to class and do your homework you are guaranteed an A!
he is an easy grader but so much wordk so demanding. avoid this class!!!!!!
Too much work for a200 level course.Reflections due every day & the readings are 30+ pages.2presentations(1 is 15mins the other 45mins but it's a group pres.),2 papers(about 5-7 pages each), no tests. Spent the first month watching a movie and simply talking. Most work is done out of class and it's entirely too much. He's good teacher though!
Way too much work but he's considering changing the amount of work. If he does go through with changing it the class is worth it. No tests or quizzes just discussions. The presentations aren't that bad and he gives you rewrites. If you're passionate about Educ take it
Love this man! He is passionate about education, loves to teach, loves to hear what you have to say! I think his passion for urban ed and just education in general is so contagious. He really makes you think outside the box! He has lowered the amount of work due since the previous semester. It still is quite a lot of work but it is doable.
This class requires dedication and passion. There is a lot of reading and writing however He cuts out a lot of the assignments throughout the semester. As long as you do your work and show up to class he is an easy grader. He is an amazing professor and it is an interesting class! If you are passionate about education take this class.
Dr. Homana is truly passionate about education especially in urban areas. Attendance is MANDATORY if you miss a class you will miss out on major points. Super nice guy and really wants you to succeed. DO THE REFLECTIONS!! easy points!! great guy, take him!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! very hard grader, way too much work. extreme liberal. not clear about any assignment. way too indepth about everything.
At the beginning of the semester, the work load seems almost impossible. DO NOT let it scare you! As long as you do the work, he is awesome! It is time consuming, but easy and he is a very fair grader. He's passionate about education and i loved him
The workload did seem hard in the beginning but it really wasn't bad once I started doing it! He was a little unorganized because he'd jump around from project to project but I actually learned a lot from his class and found it really interesting! Some didn't like him because it was too much work but like it's college not kindergarten get used to it
Class seems overwhelming because he goes over the entire schedule for the entire semester every class but if you're organized it's easy to complete everything. There is something due almost every class but it is not hard to complete. If you come to class and do assignments it's an interesting class. Also, there's no tests.
Something due every class.. SO much work. Do not take this class unless you have time to devote as if it's a 5 credit class
Discussion based class. No tests or quizzes. Lots of reading and assignments. He respects effort and participation and wants to see his students engaged in the material. Great guy. Can definitely get an A if you complete the assignments, they are not hard just a lot of work sometimes.
All of the projects overlapped during the semester and it was very difficult to keep it all straight.
Lots of reading and writing for this class. They're easy, but a bit time consuming. No tests, just a few critical analysis and presentations. Lots of group work and the work may seem overwhelming, but you realize that it's not much when you start writing. I did everything pretty much the day before and I was fine. Emails a lot for clarification.
He's a great person! Love his personality. The class is very demanding and you must be on top of everything. LOTS of group work! About half the class is spent doing extensive group projects. He goes back and forth about being a tough grader or not.
Even if you are an EDUC major, dont take 202 with him. Something different is due every class and you will be working on simultaneous group projects each with a different group. His "schedule" is more like a rough set of guidelines on how the class will go. If you take this class, be sure you're willing to spend plenty of time on his assignments.
The good thing about him is that he does not believe in any type of test. Assignments consisted of analysis of major readings, a current news presentation, and three group projects. At first I felt the class was hard, but after a while I started to enjoy him and his class. Learn to appreciate his humor, even if he doesn't mean to be, and it's fun.
There's an assignment due every single class period. Tons of group projects. And he's really hard on his students and very opinionated.
I really liked that he allowed the students to do the learning on their own and it made me have a much greater interest in education than I thought (i'm not an educ major). Yes it's kind of a lot of work but it's not hard work at all and if you're organized and have ocd about getting things done like me then you'll get an A
I wouldn't take him if there's a better option. There was wayy to much homework and a lot of group projects. He was very disorganized and this confused a lot of us in the class. If education is your major, I suggest you take him, otherwise, steer clear.
Had to take this as a core class. He is a okay teacher, but the course is totally hard for no reason. Pages upon pages of readings that we had to do. I couldn't do it. His syllabus was 37 pages long... This course, not just him, is too demanding for non majors in this course. Huge waste of time. Critical analysis this critical analysis that.
I don't ever rate professors, but Homana is great! Great discussions during class and is really interested in hearing what the students have to say. There is a lot of work, but he really values the content of the paper, not so much focusing on grammar. He thoroughly enjoys teaching and it really shows. He takes the time to listen and read your work
Dr. Homana stressed me out in the beginning. I thought his class was going to ruin my GPA and sanity, but it was not bad at all. It seems like a lot of work but as long as you just do it, you will get an A. He is very unorganized though, so prepare for that. Also, no tests, quizzes, or finals ever. But he makes up with it with a lot of homework.
If you are looking for a easy A do not take this course with him. This professor is very unclear in what he wants and you're responsible for chasing him down to ask. There is homework everyday and like 3 or 4 group projects. He takes attendance very seriously so don't bother skipping or it'll bring you down greatly.
Gary is an awesome professor. I took him for Honors Urban Education. He expects you to read A LOT and this course requires a significant amount of dedication. His grading criteria is somewhat unclear. Don't get scared away by the long syllabus. I got so much out of this class and even though it was a lot of work, I really enjoyed it.
A lot of people seem to rate Professor Homana harshly because you have to work hard. But you learn so much more from him then you do the average teacher. His main goal is for you to learn- not to torture you. He really cares about his students. And what most people don't realize is that IF YOU TRY YOUR BEST HE KNOWS AND WILL GIVE YOU AN A!
class was supper easy and pretty chill he brought candy to our first quiz
Gary is a great professor. Teaches a lot of good content and keeps it interesting, and is a pretty easy grader. However, he's very unorganized and changes the syllabus every couple of weeks, making it complicated and confusing to keep track of assignments and due dates. But he makes up for it by giving out extra credit ALL THE TIME! Awesome class.
Professor Gary is one of the nicest professors I have had so far and I'm only a freshman! He is so chill and easy going! He can be bit disorganized and unclear sometimes and a little hard to hear, but he is awesome! Professor Gary really does not want you to stress about this class and he will answer questions!
Gary is amazing! He genuinely wants us to just learn. His grading is simple and clear cut. He just wants us to help the education system at whatever capacity. I am not an EDUC major but if i was you better take this man.
Gary is so nice and really just wants us to learn. He told us when he first started teaching that his course was very heavy with papers and work and then he realized it was too much and now has it down to a very reasonable number. He just wants the best for the education system and cares deeply about his students success.
Prof Homana is such a genuine guy. He really cares about you understanding the different aspects of urban education. The class is a good amount of reading but as long as you understand the key points you'll be okay. He offers a great amount of extra credit. Do the semester long extra credit if you can! It's worth it and a great experience.
Prof. Homana is an extremely personable and caring teacher. He's very easy-going and offers lots of extra credit, but the few things in his class that are graded are major assignments. He appreciates good discussion and is passionate about education. The course requires a lot of effort, but definitely worth it.
The amount of work required for his class is ridiculous. There is so much to do in one semester. He does give good feedback but be ready for a very political heavy class. He is very strict about phones and computers in class and he'll take away points if he sees you using them when you shouldn't be.
Generally awesome guy - Don't slack in his class. It's a lot of reading and writing, but he cares more about your passion than you reading every word. You'll get an A if you write and think deeply about the issues in the readings and films. Do the Reading Concepts chart every week or you'll be hurting during finals.
Professor Homana is such a nice person, he really cares about each one of his students and wants them to succeed. STAY ON TOP OF ALL YOUR WORK!!! As long as you don't fall behind, have good writing & analytical skills, you will do fine.
Gary is a great professor, you can tell he really cares about what hes teaching and he doesnt make the class super hard. I definitely learned a lot from his class. He offers a bunch of extra credit and gives an ample amount of time to complete assignments. Plus he answers emails ASAP. Take his class! Great teacher, great person.
He is very genuine! He means all well and he loves what he teaches. The workload for this class is way more than it should be, but he gives a ton of opportunities for extra credit so you can afford to miss some assignments. The class isn't an easy A, but its definitely possible to get an A. If you keep track of the assignments, you'll do fine.
Mr. Homana is a phenomenal teacher. He is very passionate and really cares for his students. He does give homework so stay on top of your assignments but allows extra credit. He doesnt use blackboard so you have to email him for your grade. It is not an easy A but an A is not impossible. Put in the work and you are set.
He's a cool guy. You have to go to class and he wants you to take part in the discussions. The only downside to the course is being assigned a group of 4 at the beginning of the semester that you have to do 3 projects with. There are no tests though. Overall an interesting and simple class that doesn't suck to go to twice a week.
Professor Homana is my favorite professor I had in my first year!! He is so invested in the class and really cares about what we learn and he really cares about the wellbeing of all his students. And there so much extra credit it's honestly impossible to not get an A. Such a good guy and really helps open your eyes to society. Take him!!
Gary is a very sweet man, however he is Unbelievably Disorganized. I read RateMyProf for him before taking the class, and I did not think that it could be that bad. IT WAS. Also, there are many group projects, but they are easy. Also, they have a program called Reading Partners that lets you skip Final to tudor inner city kids.
I LOVED this class! In the beginning it can be a little stressful understanding what is due/when but the assignments are so easy, there are group projects which are a lot of fun to do. He gives so much extra credit that its impossible to not get an A, I never once lost a single point in the class! He is by far the best professor I've ever had!
Gary literally has the nastiest attitude ever. Need to go to the bathroom? Too bad, he will NOT let you. There is also so much reading to do, and very few assignments with unclear directions.
Had to do a presentation, he was rushing everyone while they were presenting. Cutting them off with time checks. He's completely unprofessional sends multiple emails if your absent or late. Marks absent if your camera is off, and has a 'dress code'? The readings are ridiculous and the directions aren't 100% clear. Save time & energy don't take him!
It's a very confusing class. As everyone else has said, his organizational skills are terrible and everyday his interpretation of the assignment changes. He introduces you to important issues, but doesn't really teach upon them - it's basically self taught. It's a decent amount of writing in the same fashion over and over again. It's annoying.
weekly assignments that don't take super long all lead up to a big group project at the end of the semester. really likes class participation, so make sure to show up and pay attention. kinda all over the place with organization and structure of the class. readings assigned weekly! (taken online)
Several different projects in this class, not your usual make a PowerPoint, but more creative! Prof is the most organized disorganized professor if that makes sense. Class seems hard & confusing at the beginning, but it's not. Prof genuinely cares about your opinions, what you learned, and focuses more on discussion than grades. Easy A.
He literally didn't take off a single point easiest A I have ever gotten.
Great teacher, lots and lots of reading that you MUST read or else you will be so lost and won't be able to participate in discussions = no participation points. No tests or quizzes, just make sure you read. All of the assignments you due are connected to the readings. It is very easy and VERY informative so take it!!!!
I literally, recommend this class to everyone I know because it is so easy. Had 105% in the end and I did about an hour (MAX) of work a week outside of class. And the class was cancelled 50% of the time
Amazing prof!! Super laid back but just be sure to manage your time and read the syllabus. There are days where you have a lot of reading, and some days without any homework at all. Genuinely look forward to coming to class because he's pretty cool.
This class had a good amount of assignments that might be considered lengthy, a lot of it was group projects though. He explains everything thoroughly and goes over upcoming assignments in every class. He grades very fair. He does take attendance and being engaged in class very seriously though.
Great professor! He made class mostly discussion based with a few groups projects and writing assignments. No test or exams. There is a bit of reading but it isn't too bad (coming from someone who isn't a big reader). He does take attendance seriously. Totally recommend taking this course with him!!
listen, the class is basically participation based. come to class, submit the work you'll do fine. I'm +30 in extra credit just because he gives it out. group projects are simple but make sure ur group actually just participates he's big on everyone contributing. front loads on reading in the beginning then after a month it's extremely simple.
TAKE HIM! By far the easiest class I have taken in college. He is very understanding and grades your work fast. You will pass this class along as you turn your work in and try a little bit. He is so sweet and most of the course is based on group discussion. There are blue days which mean there are days where you do not have to show up.
At first, I thought he would be a tough professor. Turns out, Prof. Homana is a chill guy. He likes to crack jokes once in a while, and sometimes he will tell funny stories. He is really interested in the class and will help you if you ask. Plus, he will often dismiss class early! Hooray for short classes! :D
Professor Homana was amazing!!! I'm still in his class rn, and a lot is group projects and readings. The readings can be bit much but the content is interesting. He takes attendance and participation seriously, and is usually flexible with assignments as long as u communicate.
He was very nice and not a tough grader. I enjoyed this class and doing the group work.
He didn't actually do any teaching. The class was all reading, discussion, and a few group projects. He never gave clear instruction for assignments. Overall, what bothered me is that he seemed to hold himself to very lax standards, while have very high expectations for his students. I don't think he wanted to be there.
honestly one of the best professors ever!! most of the class was self-taught and there were a lot of discussions. the final exam was just an essay and that was it. if you don't mind reading and talking with other students, i would recommend taking this course :)
He never gave clearn instruction, was only in class/having us meet like half of the time, and holds himself to a very low standard while holding dtudents to an unreasonable standard. I might fail this class because I turned my final work in about two hours late and he won't take it, when I have been a good student all semester.
Dr. Homana was a fantastic professor who really prioritized us critical thinking about the material. Lots of reading but it calms down midway through the semester, lots of group projects but not too bad, handed out extra credit too. As long as you use your brain and think about what you're learning, this class is an easy A.
Prof Gary was very nice and I enjoyed the class because I am interested in education. I would not take this course if you are not interested in education. There is a service-learning/ volunteer hours required outside of the class but he gives you a class period off a week.
Such a wonderful professor. He can be a little passive aggressive but wants his students to do well in the class and listen to each other. There is a bunch of reading and group projects which is fun and interesting. There is no tests or final exam. The homework and in class work is easy and can get done pretty fast. Definitely take him if you can!
He is a good professor. But I don't remember half of what we went over in class. You do all of the HW on your own, but he gives a lot of time to do it. Don't procrastinate! Fairly easy grader too. Just submit on time and follow directions, and you should get a good grade. He also often makes class asynchronous. Many group discussions done in class.
Seems like he'd be a cool uncle but I hated his class. Counts valid, excused absences as UNexcused, 30pg syllabus, cancelled within 20min of class, doesn't change dates in syllabus year to year (confusing), sassy via email, LONG pdf readings, bipolar grading. 0 lecture. Only take this core if you're in education, does coincide w edu psych nicely.
He is not sigma
To be 100% honest...This professor had so much potential, He was just very old school. Get ready to read, we usually had about 10-20 page readings a week. You cannot miss class at all or be late, dont even try it! But as for the content in itself, the topics we spoke about were very interesting, just needed to be structured differently.
This has been the worst experience I've had with a teacher. Half of the classes were canceled due to his own personal reasons. Yet he made attendance mandatory and would lock students out of the classroom. We basically taught ourselves, and the days he did teach were useless busywork while he yelled at us and interrupted our conversations.
This guy does absolutely nothing that you couldn't do on your own. He doesn't lecture whatsoever, cancels class constantly, and whenever you are in class you just read and do a group discussion. All he does is give you a textbook and tells you to write some vocab. This guy does nothing and still makes classes mandatory.
Awful Prof. His instructions are very unclear and he'll talk his whole way through anything you're supposed to be doing by yourself or in a group presentation/discussion. Very few assignments, most of which are group projects with strange requirements. Overall very strange instructions and disorganized. DONT TAKE!!
Dr. Homana is a really great professor. He is really strict about attendance and being on time. But really as long as you show up to class on time, hes an awesome guy. I have gotten extra credit on every single assignment that I have done. He is retiring at the end of Spring sem- but easy class as long as you have your shit together.
He is super nice and chill. Make sure you are on time, do your work, and participate. This class is an easy A.
