Very enthusiastic, great subject, soo interesting, nice guy
Hard and confusing. Tests are hard
awful teacher,confusing class,hard tests
the tests weren't that all. don't study the book study your notes.
Very enthusiastic, helpful, good teacher...I'm no science brain and I got an A.
Great enthusiasm! Obviously loves the subject, draws you into the class. Learned a lot! Always looked forward to going to his class!! Grade basically based on tests which are easy if you study your notes!!
I would rather go through a pelvic exam then have to sit through another one of his classes.
I would rather sit through Gary's class than get a colonoscopy!
Fantastic class. I really learned a lot. This guy knows his stuff.
Took oceanography and am currently in geology, he knows his stuff, is a great teacher, a cool guy and will spend as much time as you need to get this stuff. Grades are on tests, but he gives lots of extra credit. Take the class, its cool.
Very energetic, and entertaining. The tests require a couple of days of studying, so the night before cramming doesn't work well. He allows a 20 pt extra credit field trip to help out.
Answers questions in a helpful way that really helps you understand. Great teacher. Would take again without hesitation.
He is clumsy, and he makes me nervous
He is great. I learned so much. Give extra credit and the lectures are fun. If you do bad in the class it's because you were never there or stupid.
His lectures are interesting but his tests and notes do not coinside. I got a D in the class and i tried. But if you are a book worm and have a lot of time take him, he is interesting
This guy is CRAZY. He bounces around the room and has horrible answers to questions. It's an easy class as long as you do the study guide questions (which he posts answers online) same questions on the test. Most annoying man on earth
This class is awful, I would not recomend it to anyone, even if I hated them. Jaqcobson isn't a bad guy, hes just a **** teacher. Plus the keys to his study guides are littered with wrong answers
I like the guy as a person but don't care for the way he teaches and tests, I'll end up with an A, but the effort was way too extensive for the one unit earned, take someone else for lab, nice but not straght-forward at all.
yes this guy is the best i really liked his class.
This guy sucks. His tests are hard and because they are primarily based on his confusing lecture notes and determine your grade it makes it difficult to pass the class. Although he offers xcredit, not enough to pass. very hard.
This professor has no sense of humor, life's too short! He is very demanding and can be confusing through his own mistakes.
When Jacobson is calm he is a great teacher. His lecture class is easier than his lab. Lab is tough.Thankfully his tests are multiple choice Do all the extra credit & slide shows are good. Don't think this class is easy because it's geology.
Only one unit and it was rough! Do all the extra credit. Tests get harder as the semester ends and are not multiple choice. It's just not looking at rocks it's math, 3d, maps and lots of memorization. Alot of drop outs but you will learn if you stay.
Hmm.. Hard/boring/too much work. If you want an easy grade, then don't take him. You actually have to do a lot of work for his class. But I did learn a lot from his class.
He is a nice guy, but man is he hard to understand. The only thing I can say is, do the extra credit! It will help. Take notes, however boring and ask questions. His tests are based on lecture notes...hard class.
lowsy teacher lacks passion and lost it
I just want to say that I changed my mind, Jacobson is a cool guy. His class is really hard, but he will help you as long as you are intrested. His class IS HARD, but hes one of the nicest professors I've had.
He provides an excellent study pamphlet and lectures are organized around it. Well-prepared instructor. Offers opportinities for plenty of extra credit. Hard, but he likes what he teaches, you'll learn a lot, and not-so-hard with all the extra credit.
Gary was a cool teacher. Follow the lecture packet, it goes hand in hand with class discussion and what is on the test. Give the class some effort and you will do fine.
I loved this class! If you want to fall asleep or do nothing, well this class ain't for ya. He requires you to actually think. What a concept. At first I didn't want to continue the class, but after it ended I really enjoyed it. He has so much passion for what he does. Do the extra credit, and do the study packet each chapter. It will help. Great!
Gary is the best science teacher I have ever had! He is very passionate, and has a helpful analogy for everything. Easy to undertand and follow. You learn a lot from this class. Fairly easy A if you do the packet and work!! Don't take this class to learn about dolphins ;)
he's an amazing teacher-so passionate about geol. adn ocean. he's also a really good person, very concerned about students, and open to new knowledge
Gary likes his geology,& can explain for hrs. but when it comes to the tests, he's tough. do all the assignments & do them well and you can pass the class.
This guy is amazing! He really loves Geology and wants you to love it too. He's great at giving examples and visuals during lectures. He's not difficult to understand as long as you pay attention. The tests are pretty hard but there are tons of extra credit oppotunities. Realy down to earth, fun loving kind of guy! And Geology isn't just rocks kids
I was not impressed by Gary at all. He seemed so helpful, and yet when I went to him for help, he was very distant. It seemed as if he played favorites with his students, but that might just be my opinion. He understands geology, but cannot find the right words to explain it clearly.
Great teacher but expects a lot of work. We started the class standing room only-filled with students and by the end there was 12 of us. He is very interesting to listen to, and notes are essential to your learning. Obsessed with waves and will teach you more than you need to know on that! GREAT CLASS AND TEACHER!
I took the class thinking it would be interesting. It turned out to be a disater. More than half of the class dropped and the average grade is a D or an F. The tests are impossible and he does not explain thing real well. Do not take this class.
The content is complex. We learn the fields of geology, astronomy, chemistry, geography, and so forth. But he has a good knowledge of these fields and explains them lucidly. He is very helpful when we ask questions. I like his teaching style.
I enjoyed Gary's class. he does go fast, but there is so much info to learn that he has to. He is very helpful and will do his best to explain if you do not understand. He loves science and it's hilarious to watch him excitedly stride around on stage to make a point. the tests are hard, you have to understand concepts and apply them. Xtra credit
He was hilarious!!!! a little spacy but it was a very entertaining class! If you are a visual learner he is definetly the teacher to take from he uses tons of diagrams and pictures to explain what he is talking about!
Very helpful. Wants students to do well. Still overwhelmed at how much I learned from him. Made up for my lack of a good Geol Lecture prof. His enthusiasm for the subject is contagious. He does understand that his students aren't all geology freaks, so explains things in plain english. Would definitely recommend to others.
Pretty hard class even though it is only 1 unit class and most people take it for GE. He is rather demanding and picky, almost unfair grader as he would give u negative points for spelling... It seems like he thinks that his class is the only thing we have in our lives. He is OK when it comes to helping you. I should've taken some other lab.
Horrible class...Tests are to hard. Too much material. If you do good on tests than take this class. If not than don't take this class. Although he is very undersatnding about personal problems. He cares, but needs to take a different approach to teaching. He also needs to allow students to have a cheat sheet.
He is a nice guy but his class is very difficult. He goes extremely fast and doesn't review much. If you like to study and do good on tests take this class. Oh yeah and he gives 30 pts extra credit.
Gary runs his class probably like his life, laid back with the wind in his hair. He still lets his inner child come out and play and busting jokes in class is cool with him as long as they are funny. He looks stern but he's not, total surfer dude. Lets you make up work and accepts late work, tests are easy if you attend lectures.
He is super strict on attendance and will drop you if you miss more than 3 classes. His tests are super hard and don't make a lot os sense even with his complete study guide and answers. He makes you study things that are opposite from what are actually on the test just so you know the information. His classes are super boring and only lectures.
First of all, really loves the material he teaches and his enthusiasm really shows. Secondly, you really have to earn an A in his class and that is very respectable. The tests are tough and really force you to focus on concepts instead of facts. Extra credit that he offers can really bail you out of a jam or turn that B into an A.
DON'T DO IT! I'm ranked 9th in the class (which started as a full class and now only has 13 people left) and I still have a failing grade. If you miss 3 classes, he drops you without any warning. Make sure you like ridiculous amounts of notes and o! the very first day he'll tell you that he's going to fail 75-85% of you your class. Save your grades
Gary's class is insanely hard. The tests are almost unfair, because he tests in a manner that expects you to be extremely well-read on the topics in his class, rather than learning what he teaches you. Think of it like taking an Algebra 1 course, and being tested on Trigonometry. In an entry level Geology course, that's just ridiculous. AVOID.
He is extremely smart. I have a three hour tue class and I didn't dread it...He is very nice (sarcastic) but nice. I haven't been in school in 4 years and this class motivated me to stay back in school. I remember why i went back..If you are looking for an easy A don't take this class. If you wan't to learn, this is the class for you. Best teacher
He's extremely passionate about the subjects he teaches and doesn't tolerate student incompetance. As long as you complete the study guide and pay attention during his lectures, you WILL get a good grade. He offers generous xtra credit (that boosts your grade by 1 letter) and is one of the best teachers I've had in college.
All you really have to do is go to class, listen to the lecture, and take notes. Disregard all of the bad comments about him, he is super smart and can teach you a lot. If you ask for help, he will help you. There is extra credit available as well.
Jacobson is a great teacher! He is one of the best teachers I've had! He gives out tons of extra credit, which raises your grade by 1 1/2! It feels like a lot, but if you do it then you dont need to worry about tests. You have to come to class.I got an A and could have gotten a B+ without even taking the final.Hard-working students,he is for you!
Very Nice teacher.... but the class is difficult if you are not constantly studying on it!! He gives major extra credit that had taken my grade from a D to a B!!!!
Professor Jacobson made class fun. He was very entertaining and tried to make silly science jokes that made everyone laugh just because he thought they were so great. Thoroughly enjoyed his class. He lectures the entire time, and sometimes a bit over, so don't schedule a back-to-back class. Overall, great teacher. I'll miss his class.
Gary is an alright teacher. You can tell he's really passionate about what he teaches. He'll try to make silly Science jokes here and there. Overall the class was kind of hard, I had a D all semester but all of the extra credit he lets you turn in at the end of the semester brought me up to a B. Overall the class is hard. But Gary's a cool teacher.
Love this class but Gary seems more concerned about student's cheating or getting an easy ride then he is about how much they are learning and how well they are learning it. About 85% of the class dropped and by the time I dropped there were only a very few left. I would love to take one of Gary's face to face classes NOT his on-line class.
I had a B in the class until the extra credit was put into my grade so I had an A. But it was REALLY hard to get myself to get up and go to his class because it was so BORING! You can slack off and pass, but I honestly don't remember anything and it was such a waste of time. I rejoiced after the final..let's just say that.
Gary is awesome. He is really helpful and funny. He makes learning Geology fun. Tough on tests but he will help you out. He's also pretty cute. ;) and I love listening to his voice.
tests are way over the top! when the averages are D's there is a problem and it's not the students! i would take it with someone else....nice guy but not a great teacher constantly held class over time. made me late to next class almost everyday, was completly unorganized and would not answer advanced questions because "he didnt read that part yet"
He is a great teacher. If you go to class and pay attention, you will be fine. Do all the study question packet (at the end of class it's extra credit, and it helps prepare you SO much for tests) and use the practice quizzes and you'll get an A. He seems harder than he is. He's super into geology and it's exciting to watch him talk about it.
Fantastic teacher. Very helpful and fair. Do your homeworks, practice tests and handout packet, pay attention and attend the class. If you don't like Physics, don't take OCEA, it's all about Ocean Physics. Not Marine Biology. Lots of work, but it pays off.
he's very passionate 4 wat he does.explains things very thorough.he's a funny guy, makes jokes & laugh at them. the class is very easy and there are alot of ways to earn extra credits that can a big difference, the online practice exams hell alot and read the book. its an easy A class, attending is very important, you can miss alot if u miss 1 day.
Has a real passion for oceanography. You have to study for the exams and understand the material. Do all of the 10 point assignments. They'll help you in the end. If you keep a D average in the class and study for the final, you can get a B in the class just based on extra credit alone. DO THE ONLINE PRACTICE EXAMS! Final is not cumulative.
I've loved Geology since I was a child. This teacher nearly ruined the subject for me. He tries to cram too much into each class and always runs over. Tests are on several chapters at once, with no homework in between, and minimal in class review. Over half my class dropped out.
This guy is generally a good teacher-- pretty chill. Sometimes it's hard to understand what he says, but if you do the work and spend the time to study for his tests, you'll DEFINITELY pass if not, get an A.
Gary is a good teacher who is passionate about what he does. I maintained an A the entire semester without devoting much time to the class. The tests are tricky, but if you study the practice tests then you should be fine. Gary is entertaining and kind, and the extra credit he gives makes up for the challenge of the class. He has my recommendation.
His class was nearly impossible, and he was well aware of it! On the first day, he told us his class was hard and that his classes normally end up getting a D average on exams, but reconciled by saying that there were extra credit opportunities. Maybe I found him difficult because of my lack of interest in rocks? I don't know. Wouldn't reccomend.
Wouldn't recommend his online class. Lecture videos are confusing. He has bad grammar and makes many mistakes reading his own notes, which leads to further confusion. His quizzes are hard and confusing. Understanding and learning the material won't really help you on his quizzes. I can tell he knows a lot about geology, but not much about teaching.
I'm sorry but this teacher expects too much out of this class. This is a beginning Oceanography, not advanced! Many of us have not taken astronomy/biology/geol, yet he speaks like we have. This class is HARD, and for a general ed one I was struggling. I have other classes and a full time job, give me a break here! I'm not trying to Major in OCEA!
I took this class thinking it would be an easy A. He said on the first day that the avg grade is a D. Take advantage of the extra credit, there is quite a bit. He's a smart guy, but I have no interest in rocks
Gary is an awesome, fun, and exciting teacher. All you need to do is put forth the effort and you can get an A in his class with ease. Keep great notes and study, and you'll do fine.
Prof. tries to get the class laughing with some jokes, but nobody ever laughs except for this odd girl that seems to like him a little too much. There is NO HW so it's very difficult to try and learn the chapters. His notes and lectures are extremely confusing and go all over the place. He doesn't update his BB page at all. Wouldn't reccomend him.
This was such a mind blowing class! Gary is very through and patient. He tries to answer every question to your understanding. He literally spoon fed all of the information for exams to us...but it is up to YOU to absorb and comprehend the information. Remember: your study guides are your HW. A true college course taught well.
Professor Jacobson is a great teacher. The class is hard and the work expected of the students is equivalent of a science class of college level. If you pay attention and take good notes, you can pass the class. Add a bit of study, and you'll get an A easy! All around great class!!!
Jacobson is great. He makes time for his students & is fine with you making up a test if you're absent. He truly loves geology. He's funny & uses ppts & videos to keep things fun. He can be easily distracted by off-topic questions & tends to go over time. He is very helpful though. The study guide is crucial! You will have to study for this class!
He's a good teacher, and gets the point across very well. That being said, the lectures tend to drag on. That could be just me, but there it is. Study the practice tests he puts on Blackboard, and be ready to take pretty copious notes. It's a little geology, a little chemistry, and it is NOT a marine biology class; ocean life is rarely discussed.
His tests are extremely hard. His lectures are short but drag on leaving you to feel like 3 hours has gone by when only 30 minutes has. He grades really hard and my classes average on tests was a 60. I wouldn't take this class again nor recommend it to anyone else.
For some reason it says my grade is A+ but I'm still in the class and have a B+ right now.
This teacher is what I like to call a "Jumper". Which means that he talks about one subject to another and then back to the first subject.
Jacobson is a great teacher! He is kind of sporadic when lecturing but that helps keep your attention and you can tell he really loves what he is talking about. He includes videos, lots of diagrams and other media to help teach instead of just ppt which is nice. Do your study guide/homework packet and you'll be just fine.
He talked fast and lectures quickly so taking notes seems impossible at times, the notes are basically all you do. Teat are extremely difficult and class will leave you ready to cry of boredom and frustration! I'm a good student and work hard and this class is truly a difficult class.
Jacobson really knows his stuff, however every class is just lecture. There are four test which all are 50 questions, about 4 small assignments, and luckily extra credit. There is not really any homework, it's just up to you to constantly study and understand the info. The test are challenging but he offers a max of 30 points extra credit.
While the class is semi-difficult, and you will need to study for the tests, there is A LOT of extra credit given. Enough extra credit to boost your grade by a letter grade. Fun class, fun teacher, would take (and planning on taking) another class from him again.
Barely Passed Very little chance to get your grade up except for few extra credit opportunities, very little assignments, and the exams. If you don't show up, you miss a part of what you need for the exam. Lectures are boring and doesn't explain things to a level where you can understand. Take at your own risk -.-
This Professor is enthusiastic and is always trying to get his students involved. Although a difficult subject, I highly recommend him if you like teachers who care about their students. If exams aren't going to well there's extra credit assignments to help with that and even out your grade.
He lectures every class and you copy down notes. He provides PLENTY of extra credit. If you average Cs on the tests and do the extra credit you can pass with a high B maybe an A if you do all the EC. Test are very difficult. It's important to UNDERSTAND the material and not just memorize it. He is very passionate about what he is teaching.
Great teacher at explaining things. Be prepared to take colorful notes!
The professor, the myth, the legend. In all seriousness though, I took this class just because I needed a science to transfer. Ended up really enjoying the class! Be sure to do all of the extra credit. It will save you (and help you understand the material). Fun professor, knows his stuff, and really cares about his students.
He offerers a lot of extra credit opportunities. Hes really passionate about the material. His lectures can be confusing if youre not paying attention, because its a lot of information to absorb. If you dont show up to class, Goodluck on the exam! If you show up and do your study guide and do your practice exams, youll for sure pass.
This is my first ever review on any teacher. This teacher is TERRIBLE. Trust me, I use Rate my Professor a lot and have never felt this way about any teacher. He is very very test heavy, u HAVE to show up to lectures, doesn't post anything online, takes attendance in a college. Do NOT take this horrible teach if u are looking for a physical science
Very passionate professor, a lot of lecture and test were difficult but offers a ton of extra credit.
Professor Jacobson is great at his job. His prerecorded lectures are fun, informative, and organized. I can tell that he's passionate about what he's teaching, which makes getting through the lecture much easier. The workload isn't too bad either. The exams are a bit difficult so make sure to study.
This online class was fairly easy even though science is not my strong suit. He has very long video lectures but he keeps it pretty straightforward and crack jokes along the way. The homework is easy if you follow along with lectures. He allows you to do any homework assignment as many times as you need to get a passing grade. Great teacher!
He is a very sweet professor and really cares about his students. The hardest part about this class is the criteria. However it could be since I took it online. If you take OCEA112, take it in person. However, definitely take it with this professor.
Great professor, tries to explain things in the best way possible. Test can be hard but just study and take notes on lectures. Rewatching lectures can also help. Would recommend
I enjoyed taking his class. Was worried about it being an online science class but he gives great feedback and extra credit. Allows unlimited attempts on assignments so that is always nice too. He is always willing to help you through zoom I would recommend.
Professor Jacobson's OCEA112 class is a bit of a mixed bag. The lectures can be dry, but he's genuinely passionate about the material. The exams are challenging, but he offers plenty of extra credit to help boost your grade. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for me when preparing for the tests.
This professor does not know how to teach. He delivers info in a different way every time making it difficult to remember or understand things when Oceanography in itself is already complex. Additionally, practice exams have little correlation to the actual exam. Another old professor that needs to retire, but can't.
This professor will make you do weekly Study Questions and Practice Exams, none of which will help you with the actual exam for the section. I came into this class with enthusiasm and an excitement to learn the material, but his inefficient and consistently bad teaching has done away with that. Don't take this class.
