He thinks everyone should major in Geology. His tests are terrible and he doesn't care that the class average is 50%. Only thing to pass is prayer.

Class was extremely boring and i never went but the whole tests were the questions after each chapter. Plus the final wasnt mandatory. Though he does believe everyone should love geology and every football team in louisiana.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. He talks about his family, and then tests you on material he never mentions in class. Every class drones on and on, and you don't learn a thing.
Class was extremely boring. Sylabus was well planned out...we just didn't follow it! Test were ridiculusly hard. He gave me a letter asking to join the School of Geology because i had one of the highest grades.....a 74. AVOID!!
Everyone else's comments on this site seem accurate. His tests were ridiculous and he must think that everyone should be a geology major. studying your butt off doesn't really help and he could care less. He should only teach geology for GEOLOGY MAJORS! Our class average was somewhere around a 45!
This class starts out with a total of 200 students enrolled. After the first test, this number is reduced by about 100. This must definately tell you something. I only wish professors like him would actually see this website. Maybe it would help them to lighten up a bit.
His test do seem difficult, but I averaged a B, plus his grading scale gives some slack-(100-82) is an A. He is not a very interesting lecturer, then again, Geology is a VERY boring subject but it is easier than Biology!

I do not understand why everyone thinks he is such a bad teacher. I felt that he taught the class very well. I found his test to be simple and a little too easy. I took the class last semeseter and never took notes or studied and still passed with an A.
I don't see why everyone thought his class was hard? The questions to the tests came EXACTLY WORD FOR WORD out of the backs of each chapter. The final wansn't mandatory. The only thing remotely "bad" is that his lectures are just boring.

I don't see why people have such a problem with his class. I managed a B and skipped about 2/3 or more of the class. 95% of the test comes DIRECTLY from the review questions at the end of each chapter. He doesn't even change the order of the answers. The other 5% comes from stuff that he tells you WILL be on the test IN CLASS!!!
Omg...could this class be any more boring? When will I ever need to know all this useless information about feldspar rocks? This class made me ADD, I barely passed with a D :(
Make sure that when he shows a video in class that you take good notes. And answer all of the questions put on blackboard and in the back of the Chapters because that is how he makes his test. And if you can find an online study group to help with all the questions, go for it, that is the way to go. Good Luck to who ever takes him.
Be very careful with your scantrons. It says in his syllabus that if you miscode your scantron he will drop your grade 10%, and he will he did it to me!
Verrry rude man. He often likes to make you feel stupid. His tests can be easy if you study because you make up most of the questions and send them online. the final is optional but it's so hard that it surely is a waste of time to take it. i wouldn't recommend this class.
His test-day tirades on attendance were exhausting. When he says he will not round, believe him. I missed the next letter grade by .33 of a point. He's not hard, just boring and angry.
I loved Dr. Kinsland! He was very sweet and helpful. I'll admit, kind of boring, but it is almost impossible to fail his class. He asks the class to post questions of their own from the chapters, and that is the exam! If you fail his class, you need to re-think college! Nice guy!

Class attendance is optional but a lot of his tests come from movies you watch in class. I found it to be very boring. He covers tonssssss of information per test and you never have a clue as to what he is going to put on them. The class is a bit difficult but it is bearable.
He is a very bad teacher. I had a 4.0 before his class. I went to class every day, took every test, read the chapters before class and ended up with an D. Out of 300 students about 50 students finished the class. He is horible!
I really didn't think that his class was that hard. He let the students make up the test questions and post them on Moodle, and 90% of those questions were on the tests. I took 105 and 106 with him and made A's in both classes - but I went to class and put some effort into it - unlike most of the people who complained about him who were lazy.
He's not THAT bad. I would say that he is a bit full of himself judging by some of the stories he tells about himself, but that is to be expected from most profs. Some Geology majors swear by his "brilliance," but whatever. You make the questions on the tests and 25% of your grade is lab, so just put in the effort and get through it. Read book.
Forget what everyone told you about him not being that bad. This dude is a downright PRICK! He is rude and arrogant. On the first day he gives a lecture on how he doesn't need UL and he's only here for the prestige. If you ask him a question he already answered, he will be very rude or ignore you all together. This dude is just unneccessarily rude!
I really did not like this man's policies. In his syllabus he says that if you miscode your id# on the scantron he will deduct 10% of of your test grade and he DOES!!! He lowered my test grade by 10% because I forgot to fill in the 4 & 5 to make a 9. You don't even get your tests back, so I only discovered this by chance. Ridiculous!!!
I don't understand why people like this man become professors, other than the fact that he was not successful in his own feild of geology. His class consists of mostly movies. If I wanted to teach myself I wouldn't have payed tuition to take this class. He doesn't talk clearly and I feel like he skimmed through the book 5 minutes before class.
all we ever did was watch movies... i slept. i only went just in case he did a clicker quiz.. which you dont have to answer correctly. he's a bad teacher if you want to learn something. boring

Dr Kinsland is the worst geology proffesor at UL. Do NOT take him. His tests are hard and make no sense at all, there is no way you can learn anything by going through this course with him. And if you do bad on the tests, you think well i still have to final, he outright tells you not to count on the final to help you out. Its impossible. DONT TAKE

I don't think this teacher likes his job too much... never shows up for class, since he's not around no one ever gets information on schedule changes, and on finals he told "no one" that there was a special scantron required and the "whole" class got up and went to the library to get it... not a blow off class, waste of time & money.
I do not like this class at all. He lectures for the whole time about nothing that is really going to be on the test. The test come from what the students put on moodle. So thier really is no need to listen to anything he says. Having to study over 300 questions is ridiculous. But i still have an A in the class. But i DO NOT RECOMMENT

He was one of the worst teacher's I have ever had.He makes u feel so stupid if u ever ask for help.Some of the questions he has on his tests come from Moodle,but others,don't even come from the book.He doesn't make the ?'s due until 2days before the tests so u don't really have alot of time to answer all the ?'s &then he takes ?'s from old tests.
Dr. Kinsland is a horrible teacher!If you go to class he does not teach, he talks from the top of his head and you watch movies from the 90s that he will stop and correct. The test are hard & you must study over 350 questions for a 50 question test. He will not give you your grade untill the last test is taken and he will insult you! I would NOT!!

This class was hard but his grading system makes up for that. The only people complaining are most likely those who didn't go to class.I went to class everyday and listened to the lectures. I watched all of those boring videos and didn't even read the text book. As a result i got a B.
i got on this website after i had scheduled my classes and could not change it after reading the comments and was terrified. i personally find geology interesting however and if you attend class, actually PAY ATTENTION,take notes, etc. it really isn't bad at all! we've only had one test so far and i've made an A. this is college, not hs anymore!
Cool teacher but hard tests. Only 3 tests. final is NOT mandatory and if you take it it DOES NOT HURT your grade but it is extremely difficult and it is 100 questions (comprehensive).
HE'S A COOL GUY & HE KNOWS GEOLOGY HOWEVER HE GETS OFF SUBJECT ALOT AND HE DOESNT GIVE A WHOLE LOT OF NOTES DURING LECTURES.HE GIVES ALOT OF REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES WHICH CAUSES HIM TO BEGIN TO TALK ABOUT OTHER THINGS THAT LEADS HIM TO GET OFF TRACK. This professor was DEFINETELY not as hard as people on here make him out to be. those are the people who skipped and never paid any attention. tests were VERY easy if you listen and study. i made a's on all 3 tests and have an A as my semester grade. he is interesting and if you'll learn a lot if you give him a chance. i recommend him highly!!!
Did not care for him at all, he put me and a few others to sleep most classes. He was also not clear on what he was teaching, i feel like i learned more about his family/friends/ect more than i learned about that actual class.
Easy but boring class. Study questions that other students post on Moodle, and you will do fine. The only thing that frustrated me was how he mocked his students. He obviously has some sort of superiority complex which gives him a false pretension that he is better than everyone in there.
Dr. Kinsland is an EXCELLENT PROFESSOR. Teaching is his passion. He actually cares about students and holds them responsible and accountable. I recommend Dr. Kinsland HIGHLY!!! TO ANYONE WHO IS SERIOUS ABOUT COLLEGE!!!

Oh my gosh. I read these comments before I took Kinsland, but I brushed them off figuring he couldn't be that bad. HE IS. AVOID HIM. He hardly ever lectures.. instead he uses videos to teach for him. It's such a waste of time. Don't make the same mistake that I made. Don't take him! I have never been so bored in my life.

I took him for the summer geology class. I think he is a very kind man who tries his hardest to make a boring subject interesting. He's brilliant and is wayyy to smart to be teaching geology 105. He tends to talk about things and illaborate on things that are not on the tests just for "fun". it stressed me out but he is a very nice person.
I had Dr Kinsland for Geol 106 in the summer of 2010. He makes the class fun! Highly intelligent but has taught some real dummy's in the past. For this course I definetaly recommend Dr Kinsland and that you take it in the summer. 2 hours a day and it literally flys by. Thanks Dr Kinsland, you ROCK!!
Many people say how hard and boring his classes are. They can be slightly tedious and he tends to go off on long tangents, but what he has to say is usually really interesting if you actually pay attention! You'll do fine in this class if you attend class and pay attention! P.s. almost every question posted for tests can easily be found on google.
I took DR Kinsland in the summer. He teaches on topics relevant to the class and relevant to life, which in my opinion makes an excellent professor. I highly recommended taking any of Dr Kinsland's classes.

I found his class very boring and not helpful at all. I attended almost every session and payed attention and never passed a test with higher than a D. He gives no notes and there is absolutely no way to study for his tests seeing as he builds them from students' questions and there are more than 200 in his class.
If you give a little effort you should have no problem passing.

Despite what the atrociously idiotic students have said about Dr. Kinsland, he is honestly a wonderful professor. His class is by no means easy, yet 'easy' is not the intent regarding college level courses. Go to class, read the book, submit 3 exam questions/exam and you should be fine.

I love Geology but this man has made it a very boring subject for me. Horrible as far as teaching skills goes. On the plus side his grading scale is super easy with a 85% being an A. Only way to pass though is to take notes, post questions, dont skip class and read the chapters because they help. Very do able but avoid him if you can.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had!!! He isn't clear in his lectures and pulls questions for his tests from the students in the class, which usually have over 200 people. I WILL NEVER TAKE THIS MAN AGAIN!!!!

This man is a genius. He's hilarious, too. He's 64 and looks 45. The only thing you might need the book for is looking up answers to moodle questions. But, I didn't even buy the book, and I Aced the class. I found the book online in google books and just used that instead. Much easier and cheaper. Just don't be a slacker. Show up for class!!!!!!!!!

I found his powerpoint to be on target with the text, and he was pretty interesting. Take lots of clicker quizzes so absences do affect the grade, but u won't fail. Pretty easy A, bc questions students put on moodle are bonus points and a study guide since he puts questions from there on the test.

Do not take this class. Not only is he rude in emails, but fails to compose his own tests based on his lectures and textbook(tests are made up of varying student questions/answers that are nearly impossible to look up), nor puts any grades up until the last day. You are on your own in this class. He isn't much help either.
I don't understand the poor reviews for Dr. Kinsland. He's as straightforward as they come, and if you work and study in a group it will be the easiest A you can get in the science dept.
If you don't learn well from watching videos and documentaries, I wouldn't suggest him. Other than that he is great. He doesn't care about attendance but it's still important you go because tests are on videos and lecture only. EASY A!
Kinsland is extremely boring. The hardest part about this class is staying awake for the entire class. His lectures are somewhat helpful. Its impossible to study for the exams due to the fact that he just takes 50 random moodle questions and slaps them on a paper. I wouldn't say he's a horrible professor, just not my type.
Biggest challenge with this class is staying awake. Tests aren't hard if you study the Moodle questions. Final is exrtemely hard; little chance of passing it, let alone getting a decent score to boost your grade. Very rude and a smart ass in emails. Will take away 10 points from test for incorrectly coding it and won't inform of this.
WARNING, this teacher is EXTREMELY unapproachable. If you have questions, he will make you feel stupid for asking them. The class and syllabus are really disorganized. I pulled off a B, however, this course is rigorous. I do not suggest taking him. Dr. Kinsland is rude to students, he throws out new insults every class period, takes any chance he can to show he is intellectually superior, and will make no mistake to put a student down and make him or her feel ignorant, insolent, and completely inadequate.

His class is one of the more difficult ones youll face. If you can pass his class, then you have what it takes to be a college student. Hes a great teacher and interesting to talk to, but you cant be lazy such as not studying or not attending class. Very good at teaching this course. He uses a lot of images and analogies that are helpful to visual learners. Make SURE you attend class, because he puts things on the exams that you will not find in the textbook. His biggest flaw is that he can come off as rude and a bit disrespectful to students, so take warning in regards to that.
He's very condescending and will not answer your questions. Very focused on patronizing students. His tests are not based off of the material in the chapters. He throws random questions on there. Study guides dont help. Discourages you from taking the final. Goes off on tangents while teaching. DO NOT take kinsland. Avoid if you can.

But worst of all, he never makes the material clear to students, the tests are not bad if you study, but his grading is insane.

A top notch University professor who knows his field intimately. If you can't deal with Dr. Kinsland because he's "too hard and makes you work" then drop out of college. UL is as easy as you will find when it comes to academics.

Pick his brain to find out what will be on the exam(JOKE). You read the book, understand the math and science yet he throws wild cards. He just likes to hear his voice. One of the worst professors I've ever had. He does not answer questions, or clarify on anything, and if he does answer it he's rude. His tests are ALL cumulative and usually have at least 10/40 questions that he either did not go over or covered very briefly. I took pages of notes, typed and studied weeks in advance and still made a C. DO NOT TAKE.

He tests on things he says in class, regardless of whether they're related to geology. His class was really hard for me to understand.
Kinsland is cool, but boring. Class isn't mandatory, but sit in a couple because sometimes he puts questions on the test he says in a lecture but not in the book. The class is super easy to make an A/B with a bit of effort. Just read the chapters for the test and then he gives you all of his old tests that all of the new test questions come from.

You get 3 exams & 1 optional. What he talks about in class is about his life nothing about Geology and if its about geology its not on the test. Just a heads up!
If you have to take GEOL 106 do no take it with this professor I had a 3.0 work my but off for my grades, showed up every class, filled out all his study guides and read the book. and still failed the class. Test 3 don't even look at the so called study guides he gives you only 20% or less of it on the test! Be warned just take another professor
On the first day of class he said its not his job to teach us anything and that we have to teach ourselves, he then showed the grades from last semester in which only 15 people passed his class . His lectures consist of 1%geology 39%his personal life 60% trashing on religion. Stay away from this teacher he's the worse I've ever had.

I encourage anyone to avoid this class. It is incredibly hard. BUT if you do take it, you better do your work unto the Lord Himself. You can not pass this class with a poor work ethic. Study every sentence and detail in the book and pay attention in class. Be diligent. It is possible to pass.

Grades extremely hard on exams even though you will think they are easy. The questions come directly from the textbook and if you use the textbook to study you should get an A right? No. Nearly the entire class of senior geology majors failed his exams. I have NEVER made even a B in geology. He puts students down and doesnt answer any questions.
Terrible Professor
If it weren't for the TA, probably none of us would have passed. He is an actual dinosaur, so hard to pay attention to him and his tests were worded in ways no one could understand. Then he told us "disappointed you may be teaching my grandchildren" when everyone failed his test that even the TA didn't understand.
