essay questions on tests are unreasonably difficult, speaks in monotone...
very soft spoken, goes over things many times
No Comments
Gary is no good guys. Boring and makes tests harder than they need to be
exams are hard! lectures felt like a waste of time-notes are very hard to take
BEST TEACHER EVER! Extremely Clear, Easy A, relatively speaking.
tough class GO TO IT and study!nice prof but sit toward front to hear
extremely hard, nice guy though, work hard and will be fine
Very nice, take a lot of notes and go to class, exam and quizzes mildly hard
tests are on random material not covered in lecture, nice guy once you know him
No Comments
What is this guy doing?too hard. wears shorts in winter weather! :(
do a lot of book reading, he tests on little details, class is boring but vital
horrible. monotone. ask a ? makes you feel like an idiot. take stephens
take this class if you are good in biology. study notes and online power point
Tests are unreasonably difficult, monotone lectures
hard to hear, seemed unorganized, i did not like the class
READ THE BOOK: Impossible to take notes
Avoid @ all costs. Boring. Never went to class, lectures put you to sleep.
306 is death. Death in a compact 1 semester course
tests on random minute details, lectures don't make sense...impossible to pass
Tests are ridicuulous, if you go to him for help he just sits there and stares
Tests are impossible! The most minute details. He screwed my GPA! I have UD's student services to thank.
good teacher...for tests-make sure u know EVERYTHING in the chapters and u will do good in class. Complete memorization. He is helpful at making the material clear. Intense class.
Extremely Easy Class, Tests are straight from notes and book. Very nice and extremely helpful.
You feel sorry for him since he is so dry and monotone. His exams overly difficult. Going to his class is worhless, you just need to memorize his slides with the attributed text pages. Pitiful.
Tests straight from lectures and textbook -- read chapters. Clear and helpful guy, stresses topics in several ways to reach everyone.
Friendly man, tests very reasonable- straight from slides and no tricks, a little uncomfortable in front of a class but tries hard
Laverty is pretty good, when compared to people like Galileo... he does very good slide presentations that are then posted on the web. Tests are tough (fill in the blanks, eww!), but he emphasizes the important material on the test during lecture.
Pretty straightforward. Tests are mix of multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank. Just read and go over the powerpoint presentations and you'll do fine.
One word: AWEFUL!!!!!! I learned more from my tutors than i learned from him.
hard tests, very monotone. if you want to sleep good professor to take
Of course tests will hard for people who don't do any work. He is very clear about what will be on exams and they are on the tough side, but fair. People who think the course is "aweful" may also want to invest in a spelling tutor.
He is a very fair professor. If you go to class and read, the class isn't hard at all. He is nice and willing to help.
Super boring and monotone...spends about ten minutes on each slide. Tests are fairly confusing and require a thorough knowledge of slides and book.
He picks out the randomest things to teach..likes to use a lot of graphs...hated the class...which means a lot because I like physiology.
Very quiet, seems nervous in front of a class. Knowledgeable about the topic. Uses powerpoint and posts it online. Tricky tests based mainly on lecture. Work hard to understand every detail of what he says in class and you'll be okay.

He is very clear about what he expects on tests. He makes the material as interesting as possible. If you do the work, you can get an A.
quiet, tests are hard, must study slides very carefully and read very carefully. Easy B.
A little dull in lectures, but knows the material. He teaches well, expects you to do work outside class. Spend time reading the book and reviewing notes. Tests are fair, he expects a good amount of detail, so watch out. Learned a lot.
Class is too hard. His test questions can be a little vague. I'm a science major and I feel this class is too hard. I went to him out of class and he couldn't help me besides be condescending and told me to study more. Very unhelpful. Take another class if possible!
boring lectures, you dont learn anything from slides so you have to MEMORIZE the book outside of class. his test are impossible and doesnt go over half the**** on it. pece
I hated this class with a passion. Mostly because he assigns extra credit, and then gives you zeros for plagiarism (which he cant even spell correctly) even though you cited the work. He expects you to summarize "in your own words" scientific research that sounds like another language...and I'm a bio major. In short. TAKE IT WITH ANOTHER TEACHER!!
I really didnt like this professor at all. His lectures are so boring its hard to stay awake in class. Reading the book is all you need to get by in this class. If you go to him, hes willing to help as much as he can, but basically he will tell you stuff you already know. I dont recommend him for this class.
He speaks in monotone that puts you in a deep sleep. Tests are hard, I spend half the class just trying to make out his hand-writing. Went to his office hours, knocked on his door (which was locked..) then he opens it and looks at me like i'm about to rob him. I'm sure he is passionate about physiology but I don't think I would take him again.
Although it's hard to make physio exciting, Dr. Laverty is very clear in lecture. He draws the figures along with you which i think helps a lot. He also offers extra credit. Didn't read at all and got B+.
Only class I've ever failed in my life. He definitely made fun of my major when I asked him for help. Not helpful at all. Quizzes are fair, but tests were too difficult. There needs to be more of a curve or make the tests forcus on material more. AVOID this professor and class!
As a Bio Major, this has been my favorite class so far. He gives you slides with great drawings and little blurbs that spell out "the things you need to know". NO textbook reading necessary. Take lots of notes on the slides in class, study them and you will have no trouble on the tests. He tells you everything you will need to know.
horrendously boring and is unhelpful if you try to ask him how a topic he is teaching pertains to a clinical setting. Pretty easy overall though. take notes in the art book and then pure memorization. he is tricky though.
all you have to do is "to get old exams for the class." And, maybe taking notes from lectures. And you'll do fine, even though the lecture is boring!
Most awkward professor ever. Take Stevens.
Good teacher. Make sure you know all the slides and all the diagrams from the art book and you'll be fine. Try to go to class (even tho u can get away w/missing some). Take good notes, study slides/diagrams and you'll be fine. Only need text to reinforce things that are unclear to you from class. I def. recommend him!
Take good notes on the slides and you'll do well. Extra credit allows you to add up to ten points to each exam. The material was pretty interesting, especially because he uses the human phys. book not animal phys. I would def. recommend!
Professor Laverty was awesome. He organized the course material well, and there were 2 quizzes and 3 hourly exams. You could also earn up to 30 points of extra credit (3 ten point assignments). I definitely learned a lot in this class, and it was enjoyable. I highly recommend Laverty for 306.
gary is a funny guy. He says alot of funny things in class and if you can stay awake to hear them they're actually pretty funny. The exams are always HUGE and have a ton of material...the ONLY way to pass them is to study and read the book a few times prior to the test. If you aren't a hard worker, probably avoid this class.
Gary and his "cartoons" were the best thing to ever happen to me! It's a managable class if you put in the time
This lab is a little more work than some of the other 2 credit labs offered, but it's worth it if you're going into research. I learned a lot of techniques in this lab. You'll have to go into lab at odd hours sometimes, but it's not too bad and he's really laid back.
This is exactly the Physio course I was looking for. The material is presented a couple times, each time dipping into another layer of detail. It's not particularly easy, and if physio is your thing you're at an advantage. It was a great class.
Laverty is super helpful, but you have to do a lot of work to do well in this class, just like any other Bio class. But its really hard to understand him unless you sit front and center, super quiet, but makes 300tolerable
have you ever wanted to slit your wrists? guess what, after having him as a teacher, you will!! seriously dont take him..his class is so boring, he speaks in a monotone, and when you ask him for help, he just tells you he doesnt give extra credit..ok great, but can i have help? DROP HIS CLASS
Impossible to pass. Read every textbook assignment, went to every class, took notes, and studied. I still bombed every test and quiz. Makes every test ridiculously hard and speaks way over your head. I've never done so badly in a class before in my life.
Laverty is an OK teacher and if you put in the work his class isn't that hard. Just make sure you know everything about the figures in the ppts and you'll do fine.
Okay so basically, try to pay attention in class, it'll help. Print out his slides and take detailed notes on there. However, personally, I felt it was helpful to read the textbook and to understand the material rather than just using his notes. (only read the text that relates to his class notes, that's all that he'll test on).
The class is pretty boring, but he puts all the notes online so you really don't need to go. Use the notes to guide your textbook reading because that's all he tests on. Exams are pretty tough, but they aren't too bad if you're prepared
Pretty straightforward class. 3 tests and some easy, online quizzes. Study the notes and the associated readings in the textbook. Gary is a boss.
I wanted to fall asleep pretty much every single class. But it's an OK class. Just take good notes off his ppts (if you can stay awake), and brush over the textbook. A few online quizzes but he gives you 2 chances so they are fine. Give yourself at least a week to study for a test, they can cover a lot of information.
Thick as molasses, though keeps me coming back for more. A great professor who is dedicated to his work. A Guinness toast to you Laverty.
I love him! He is a really great professor if take the time to listen to what he is saying. He actually teaches you about what he is presenting, he doesn't just present it like most professors. I would definitely recommend him- he is the cutest and you'll actually learn from his class!
In my opinion the class was pretty tough. I liked the material a lot but was disappointed with most of the test questions. An A/B is feasible but you have to start studying 2 weeks before the test. He is kind of boring to listen to but is probably one of the only professors who actually teaches what he has on his slides, goes very indepth. Good guy
Seems unapproachable at first but is actually really nice. He's definitely a great professor who knows his stuff but you have to be willing to put a lot of work in. If you like the material though the work isn't boring. 5 easy sakai quizzes, 3 tough tests. Go to class for clickers. Also, he does human phys instead of animal phys which is awesome.
He is such an awkward professor but extremely passionate about his work. Do NOT underestimate the first exam because he only gives out 2 exams and a final. His exams are difficult and cover A LOT of material so stay on top of the reading after class. Your textbook will be your best friend.
Class was hard but the teacher is helpful.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE HAD! He doesn't respond to emails and is very unhelpful. Doesn't even go to his own office hours! He is really smart but very boring. Definitely would never recommend him. I had to drop the class because I did so poorly on his first exam. His tests are superrrr hard. Class average was a 56% on one exam and he wouldn't curve
the class is pretty interesting, however can be dry at points. it's important to go to class and take detailed notes on the powerpoints and keep up with the class readings. Exams are pretty difficult. definately took 100% of my effort to pull off a B in the class.
I took this class and failed miserably. The teacher is so boring its dreadful to go to class. He speaks in monotone so majority of the class is doing their own thing on their computers. This class basically ruined my chances of getting into Pharmacy school or Med School. if you want him to respond to your emails your have to send multiple emails.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! The class is so boring and hard to pay attention. The teacher is monotone and spends 15min on one slide. I read every assigned reading and still got D's on the tests. Quizzes are fair but that's about it. Don't bother emailing him either because he won't respond. Best advice: memorize the powerpoints slides and textbook.
Horrible speaking voice. You can't hear him half of the time. Quizzes are impossible. Just overall bad. I'm lucky I had a fun group for lab to make up for it.
Probably one of the hardest classes I've ever taken here at UD. Do not tale.
Literally a monkey could take this course and get an A. I'm pretty sure I went 6 times and that was for the clicker quizzes. Just memorize everything in the book and all components of the pictures in his slides. And if you can't memorize under pressure at this point consider a different major
Laverty was an awesome teacher. He really is genuine with his love for teaching. The class is not an easy class and you have to seriously do a lot of work, read the textbook, go to class, etc. An A is definitely attainable if you work hard. Pay attention to the case studies he presents all the time. They will help you do well on the tests.
Horrible. Do yourself a favor and find a different professor.
Laverty is a nice guy, but his lectures are so boring and I had a really hard time not falling asleep. He really doesn't teach the material that well, the only way I survived was by reading the textbook. That thing will be your life because his tests are based off of that and his slides, which are basically diagrams for the book.
Professor Laverty is a really nice guy and you can tell hes passionate about what he does. His slides are not very clear and the tests are very difficult. Definitely keep up with reading the text book.
He is the hardest professor i've ever had. All his lectures consist of is the powerpoint and him speaking. You have to read and memorize the textbook. The exams are impossible and only 2 exams and the final. Must study weeks ahead of time and memorize the powerpoint and figures in the textbook. He is never at his office hours.
Gives some of the most boring lectures I've ever attended. Basically need an IV of caffeine to stay awake and pay attention to Laverty. Class isn't terribly difficult, but you definitely need to put in effort, pay attention in lecture, and teach yourself many of the main concepts from the textbook. Material is interesting, Laverty is not.
Find old exams if you can, he reuses every single question! If you can't find old exams, then you better get use to reading the book cover to cover. Go to his office hours for questions and take good notes during his lectures because all his powerpoint slides are just figures from the book. I thought it was a very interesting class and enjoyed it
He is extremely annoying in his lecture style in that he will just put up a figure from the book on the projector and ramble for periods of 15 minutes per figure. It is very hard to stay attentive for the entirety of the lecture. I have to read the book to make sure I know whats going on when though I don't miss lecture.
Had to take this class for being a Biology Major (if you don't need it for your major - don't take this). He's such a nugget and likes when you participate in class. Don't be afraid to email him - he's great about responding and is willing to help. Lectures can be confusing but definitely go to review sessions!!
Don't take this if you don't have to! Don't be afraid to reach out to him - great at responding to emails. Go to review sessions!!! Always bring your clicker in case of pop quizzes (but they're usually just for attendance so don't stress). Good luck!
Dr. laverty is very passionate about what he preaches. The material is very interesting, but the exams are hard and challenging. The book is super ultra important to get an A in this class even if you pay attention to every lecture you'll miss details. Read the book more than once. Average total grade was about 75 and he curved.
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken The material is extremely intricate and he just stands in front of a figure from the text and describes it Once you leave class you go to the textbook to find a ridiculous amount of extra info I've never studied so hard for a class and got my first C in my entire academic career
Dr. Laverty is obviously very passionate about what he's teaching. He's a great person, but as someone with no biology background, this class was HARD. His exams were confusing and his lectures weren't very engaging. I had a decent grade in the class until the final, which killed my grade. Some people love him and others don't. It just depends.
Laverty's exams are so much easier as compared to Olabisi and Raden. His exams are straight off of his review sheets. If you read his review sheet, the case studies, and simbio you will be fine. Lectures are long but what Bio class isn't? He brings his dog to class! His review classes could also be helpful if you ask the right questions!
General physiology is inherently a tough subject. Use his notes as a guide but make sure you read and outline the book. I used a highlighter personally just for time's sake but the studying is just like any other biology course. He has some lectures that are important to go to bc of clickers but I usually just go to all of them. Good luck!
Definitely a boring lecturer but if you read before class you'll be more into lecture and understand the point of his rambling. Gives an outline of what will be on the exam with clear expectations of what you should know. Makes it so you only have to understand the big pictures and real world applications. If you make a true effort, you will pass.
Hes a really great guy, sometimes his lectures are very boring. The first exam I studied hard with the textbook, did awful, second time, I just took everything off his slides and lectures. Did great! Go to class every class. He gives extra credit and does curve.
Doctor Laverty is great and brings his dog to class. He often gets off track about things that aren't relevant. The class isn't hard but attendance is mandatory, most of the test material is on the slides which aren't always shared. The open-ended questions on exams were straight from the power point. We had open notes for the last 15 mins of exam
Dr. Laverty was ok. He gives all multiple choice tests, which weren't easy, but it's a 300-level Bio class. Reading the book helped a lot, but going to class was important too. He is kind of distant, but can also be funny. I kind of wish I had taken Gallileo, but it's not the end of the world. Also, I think he curved at the end, but it was minor.
Dr. Laverty is a very nice man, but he takes a bit to get used to. He goes through his lectures very slow and can seem to get off track quite often, but in reality he's not. His exams have odd material on them and are weird getting used to, but he's a fair grader. He is a decent professor, not great, but not terrible.
Professor Laverty is a nice man and certainly very intelligent. However, the way he "teaches" lectures leaves students confused and left having to teach ourselves the material needed to know. He gets off track a lot and I feel like I barely learn anything in his lectures because I'm busy trying not to fall asleep. Good luck if you get him.
He's nice but the most boring, monotoned professor I have. Half the class is trying to keep their eyes open and the other half just gives up and puts their heads down.
Hes very passionate about bio. His PowerPoints and worksheets are primarily what tests are based on, so reviewing those is very helpful. Ive managed to do well (A) while only using the textbook when instructed to do so (about 3-4 times). I would definitely take one of his classes in the future. Also he brings his dog sometimes.
nice man but it was very easy to fall asleep during his lectures. spoke in a monotone voice and his exams were half multiple choice and half open ended. Although open notes were allowed for some time on every exam, they were very hard for no reason especially for an intro to bio class. If you have him try to switch but its not the end of the world
Laverty is a really nice man, that is very passionate about biology. He speaks in a very monotone voice, and is kinda awkward, so lectures can drag on. But I thought he was a really good professor, he likes to connect everything together, and help you to see the bigger picture of biology, which really helps in the beginning.
Laverty is a cool guy and really smart. Succeeding in this course depends on listening to the lectures and trying to gather the important info from the extra info. It can be hard because the lectures can be all over the place and he posts them at really weird times with little notice to do them before class. Also no office hours so good luck
Gary Laverty is a very sweet older gentleman who can be a little bit boring during lectures but tries his hardest to make sure you understand. While I had trouble paying attention during class, re-watching online lectures at 2 times speed really helps as it sounds less monotone and slow. But although it's a little difficult, he makes learning nice.
Very reasonable grader, tests were based off the lectures and questions were well written. He explains things in a way that is easy to understand. He is a kind person and goes out of his way to be helpful.
Honestly, he was a pretty good professor! I'm very surprised he only has a 3 on RMP. When I took his class it was entirely just knowing the information and a little bit about applications. Watch his lectures and review the slides and this class is very easy to get a decent grade in. Definitely attend the optional sections, he gives extra credit.
He DOES NOT CARE about his students. Complains TO US about having to "deal with so many students" when the exam averages are below 55. Does not respond to emails, is not able to effectively teach for exams, and exams barely relate to the course or textbook at all. Inaccessible outside one class a week. Over half the class is failing. STAY AWAY
Very nice guy but not an interesting lecturer. Tests are not difficult as long as you pay attention and go over the material. A bit unorganized and not very good with technology.
Professor Laverty is by far the worst professor Ive taken at UD. He NEVER responds to email and does not care about his students at all. Averages on all of the exams were in the 60s and 50s.
This professor was the worst professor I have ever taken at University of Delaware. I am normally a straight A students. The average on exams were in the 50s. He did not care about any of his students. He is disorganized and is not a good teacher. His lectures did not make any sense. Avoid this class.
Horrid professor. Exam averages were in the 50s/60s and he didn't care, no curve. Had to watch lectures and type out everything, questions could be based on a throwaway sentence from one random lecture. Took 3 hours to watch 1 50 min lecture & lectures would often be 1/2 an hour longer than class time. Rude to students worried about grades, avoid!!
Nice old man. Easiest bisc course i've taken. Weekly hw that can be found online and packback ?s. 3 noncumulative exams, 50 MCs each. Async class 2 days/wk and 1 mandatory sync class. Async recordings ran overtime and he didn't seem to care. Slow to reply to emails if he does at all. Pay attention, take good notes, and you'll get an A.
I am a good student who pays attention in class, and for the most part receives very high grades. Professor Laverty may have been a good teacher before the pandemic, but while the class was online, he became extremely lazy. He turned a synchronous course into an asynchronous course, class averages were in the 50s and didn't teach. LLLaverty
