Ling's approach to mathematics using basic concepts, not distracted by coordinate axes and formulae, is refreshing and exciting. His style of extremely formal speech, which he reproduces thoroughly on the board, confuses many students, but I like it, too.
Needs to understand that not everyone will be entering MATH110B (Calculus II). Most class periods are spent doing theorems and problems that "you won't use in this class but will in 110B and 110C" Not helpful.
mean, disorganized, strict, expects a lot of work, he's weird.
good teacher, teaches slowly so you can understand, and doesn't give too much information all in one day. gives practice tests that resemble the real test. easy tests.
Most likely the worst math teacher on the planet. The guy knows his stuff, but does not teach math, he preaches it. If you are looking for an English class for Math majors, this is it.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. His class is not easy but great. He explains concepts very well. You have to work hard to learn it. This is not a class to teach you how to use calculators. Just because you didn't get a good grade does NOT make him a bad teacher.
Mr Ling is perhaps one of the most confusing teachers that I have ever met in my life. I find that his approach to mathematics is very abstract rather than concrete. Hes not all about using calculators to find obscure numbers with a bunch of decimal places. Overall he is a good teacher. if u get him
He's really confusing and his sentences are really wordy. His practice tests are basically the exams, but with different problems. He takes about 30 minutes to an hour just to go over one problem.
His word choice for teaching is very sophisticated and as a student its very hard to understand even with an average vocablary. The grade is based all on test so its tough to earn an A. My math skills are bad due to poor foundation in highschool and its a big leap between the way this professor teaches compared to my HS teachers.
pretty confusing. at one point, i forgot i was in a math class. if you are not proficient in english, dont take his class. i would avoid him all together.
An excellent teacher. The people who don't like him probably didn't work hard enough. The complaints about his use of the English language is simply a reflection of everything that's wrong with American education, and in particular, American students. If
apparently mine rating got deleted , well some people arnt as good as english maybe cause there still learning it? not everyone knows allot of vocabulary you know so this class might be good for people with good english but dont hate on the people that are still learning , he uses to many complicating words for a math class , hes sopose to help you not confuse you
he doesnot need you to do homework. it is great.and his texts are harder than usual and it is like a english class rather than math class. just to write the notes each time. in shot, if you are good at math, you would take him because of no-homework. and i take him.
worst teacher ever, teaches you in a confusing way so you get confused , shows you a problem does it in a wrong way to get another answer, worthless class
He is an excellent teacher, need to work hard to get a good grade, problems in exams very much like problems he talked in class, so taking notes will be helpful. you will be able to get A in exams easily if you do the work. by the way, you gotta be aware of the final exam.
Mostly Note taking, need to know algebra to do well in this course. I fall asleep during his monotone presentation. Needs a better book, the one we use is produced by the college and not so good.
He knows math well but not his students. He has a lot of his own handout besides the book he choosed for the course. He never mind if you fall in sleep in his class because waking you up is not his job.
He is extremely nice. Always answer every question u have. He's one of the best Math teachers in CCSF. People who don't like him are lazy. He is not that hard. Always gives out the practice test before the real test and the practice test tells u just about everything on the test. Very easy. Highly recommend to take his class (I had him in Advanced
=/ writes messy cursive for math?!?!? what the beep! >.< can't even read it well.. how can you even take good notes.... everyday talks and talks and talks.. does't even explain math right =[
One of the best professors I have ever had in CCSF. He tells the very intrinsic meaning of mathmatics. His class really made me to start liking mathmatics, and every student should take his class!
If you like fast calculations or skipping steps in any problems, take him. If you don't, take somebody else. One important thing, which is that he gives practice exams and go over the problem with the class before the real one starts.
Mr. Ling speaks with a certain vernacular that many students find hard to understand; however, he makes math very interesting (and hard). He really wants his students to understand math. If you want to learn, take his class but he is very hard on tests.
Inconvenient office hours (like 4pm for a 10am class). Utterly confusing; goes out of bounds in every class to relate things to 110B concepts that we have no chance of knowing anything about. I got an A in trig/pre-calc but a C in calculus. I don't know, despite showing up for every class I learned absolutely nothing. 150 hours of my life, gone.
His lecture was somehow helpful. This applies to any math class; homework and solving problem are crucial when comprehension of material is concerned. He wasn't the clearest teacher ever but he had some good qualities such as sample tests right before the each test, which were so simlilar to the real tests.I failed to get an A but still got B+!
No homework. Extremely easy to get A. I got A+ because I attended his class very often
If you are international student don't even think about to take a class from him. His class is full og lecture, at the end of the class you know nothing. He just copies all his notes from paper and asks you wierd questions.

Writes cursive on the board, terrible. Talks and talks and talks, most of the talking is way too much stupid definitions that are unnecessary, easy to understand on their own, simple and confuse the students. His talking is really terribly distracting from what he is trying to teach. He goes on for minutes "I think what you think you are saying, an
PoS teacher. Talks too much. Makes everything more confusing than it should. Writes in cursive. All in all, POS.
Be warned, this class is only for students willing to work HARD. If not, don't even try to take the class. However, if you want the best math education available at City College, take Ling. The material is very well thought out, and his love of the subject is clear. You will be well prepared for mathematics on the university level.
No people skills, no listening skills, an obnoxious personality.
Great Teacher in all, but really difficult to understand becuase he crowds the board with tons of information. Sometimes it's not related to the class work.
ooo, man this teacher is one of the hardest teacher i have ever taken. Eventhough Geometry can be simple, he makes it extremely difficult to understand. He gave tough examples. He describes with the hardest english words possible, and i thought it was suppose to be math. Extremly boring, i hella hella tried to stay awake in his class too.
took calc in hs, aced it. Took Ling for precalc, got my first C ever!! Frowny, condescending, pretentious, with lizard-tongue facial tick. Avoid at all costs. I still like math but this guy's antagonistic and obviously hates his job and life in general.
Just 1 sentence: He can make what I learned in 11th grade in Vietnam become something I never know what it is :P . His explanation is very bad !
He's a nice teacher.Easy to pass.
Take him if you have a serious interest in math. He is very meticulous and particular about the process. He is an extremely hard grader and when people ask him questions can be rude and discouraging. I would look for a different teacher.
Bring your coffee and redbull to class!
Best teacher I've ever had. Seriously. His level of teaching calculus IS hard. But if you put in a ton of work, he'll take you places. And the point is - he DOES take you there. For someone, who never really found any inspiration in math (I just wanted to get the right result and pass the class), his lectures were truly awesome.
Cool guy! I never thought a math teacher can be like him. You can learn lots of useful thing in his class! He also teach you how to be a real college student!
Avoid if you need a teacher, Good for Foreign students who have finished that calculus sequence already but need credit in the US. Stay quite and don't answer any questions, he will just put you down. If you don't already know calculus, you should avoid this class.
I've taken Mr. Ling for the past three semesters and I believe that he's the BEST teacher I've ever had in any subjects. Everything that he puts on the board is very logical and clear to someone who's been keeping up with the class. His office hours are extremely helpful. If you want the best education in math, he's the professor you want to have.
His emphasis on studying theorems and definitions really helped me develop my problem solving skills. He is very helpful during office hours. He's a very good lecturer and makes his exams difficult. I know that most people use this site to look for teachers that will give them an easy A; he's not the person you're looking for.
The class isn't too difficult. You can get good grades on tests with some work. What I would worry about is the final exam. It's inadequately hard. The problems on the finals are harder than the ones covered during the semester. Aside from that, Mr. Ling is a great teacher
many students keep asking question in class; he's still patient to answer. He teach theory n proof in class.i think it's borin.but his test is easy at all just follow his practice test.the final is kind of difficult since there are no more practice final..hahah..if u ar interested in math or u hv already know math deeply,u can take him
He is extremely knowledgeable but often condescending. However, he has an open door policy and is always willing to discuss math with you. If you complete your homework and practice tests, you will be well prepared. Heavy on theory, less on practicalities.
Mr. Ling's trigonometry class demanded that students develop a deep understanding of the material and are able to apply that understanding creatively. The exams are very challenging but his grading system is unusually forgiving. His approach is very formal, relying heavily on unambiguously defined terms and proven principals. I loved his class.
Gary Ling is an excellent, excellent lecturer.
Why he decided to get into teaching, or how he's managed to hold the position for so long is beyond me; he clearly has no interest in the students. He loves math and should definitely be in a field that involves math, but he should absolutely not be on the class roster without a disclaimer: "warning, this instructor will ruin your semester"
No wonder his class is almost empty.
Excellent professor, but very difficult to succeed in his tests. He got me interested in mathematics beyond what I thought I was interested in. If you want to learn proper mathematics, and will put the time and effort to learn, this teacher is the one.
I am taking this teacher for math 110B and I have to revised because his clas is amazingly hard to understand. He wants every single detail information what the f...we need that I don't want to be a mathmatician. I just need to complete my GE requirements. If you are looking for to be a mathmetician take this class other wise BIG NOOOOOOOO
Most classes ended with me wanting to cry. hardest class I've ever taken. Prereq is 840, recommended 860: he teaches at 860. Lecture/tests hardcore, grades easy. Doesn't dumb down: I felt like an idiot for 4 months, but he's the only teacher who didn't teach me like I was one. My brain grew. Will take him again, god help me.
I was happy with taking him for math 840 but he tends to just write a lot on the board and I believe that most of the class had no idea what he was talking about. He is willing to always help and his door is always open.Tests are fairly easy as long as you study the practice test.He is a lenient grader.Finals are way harder and more confusing.
If you are truly interested in deeply understanding math, you absolutely must take Mr. Ling's classes. He welcomes questions and is almost absurdly exact. He has a very dry wit. His grading system is very generous though his exams are HARD.
Don't take this teacher if you are looking for an easy A. He uses unnecessary formal language which I have a hard time understanding and I'm not ESL. His tests are difficult, but he has a low grading scale, even then it's hard to get an A. Avoid this teacher at all costs! More than 1/2 the class dropped after the 1st exam. Its GPA suicide.
Very difficult class, but if you are interested in math, it is right class to take. He welcomes to answer questions, and he is knowlegeable. Your grade is base on your test, no homework, but you have to do the practice test that he gives out. if you dont know math well, and you dont work hard, dont even try to take his class
Lazy people and stupid people will consider he is the worst teacher in the world, Hard working people and smart people will consider he is the best greatest nicest in the world. I am smart and lazy, still consider he is the best, because I am math major.
He always talks in math riddles, so unless u understand math lingo, you will get lost really fast. Doesn't explain things in regular language
I didn't do any homework during the semester, consequently, was unprepared for the final and got a B in the class. Don't repeat my mistake, do the HW. █
He does not teach math, he teaches math encyclopedia. Extremely difficult to understand even as a native speaker. He writes paragraphs of text on the board for his lectures and does not teach any common style of math. He wants you to "understand" math by confusing you till no end. 80 %of my class dropped/failed, I think that says enough.
This guy is ridicululous, he does not welcome questions and makes u feel like an idiot when he answers them. He does not use examples of the type of math that he is teaching, he just writes definitons all over the board. Around 22 ppl failed the 1st test and 15 failed the 2nd and the rest got D's & C's. Bottom line worst teacher ever don't take him
Although he tried to teach math definitions, many could't get the concepts. This is in part because many didn't do the nessasary outside work. This is college poeple not high school, do the work. Didn't use the book much, but did do hand outs. After taking, this class, and doing well, you will be better prepared for the next level math class.
Genius at math, not so genius at teaching, very hard class. No hw required, no practice tests, one extra credit for the semester. Barely got an A.
Good prof. His classes are not for people who just need to pass a math classes. Go to class, take all notes, in the order his gives it. I look for teacher like him challenging who know his math. Lazy students stop given bad ratings his class are for science major people. Only science major people undrstand each. Take his class iff U like it.
if you have any knowledge on geometry, it wont work for him, you need to follow what he teaches, and more than math, it looks like an English class full with definitions, axioms and theorems. It is a hard class and his exams are complicated.
he is a hard teacher doesn't explain too well half or around half the class drop after the first exam.
Terrible professor, expects too much and doing proofs that other professors normally don't expect, basically doing things way beyond the scope of the course that nobody understands.
If you just want to pass. Choose another. If you want to learn math. Choose him. You will know math is something more than a tool.
If u major in math like me, u should take his class which is extremely tough but worthy. I heard that he is the hardest one in Math Department at CCSF!!!
hardest math teacher in CCSF, His explanations are hard and his geometry class was actually an English class, ended up withdrawing the class :(
He is really really hard. But im grateful to have taken his class, he makes me "understand" the very core of the material, not just merely memorizing formulas in order to ace on exams :) he is simply smart and a very friendly teacher too!
Very good teacher.. very clear and helpful.Just as long as you show up and do the work you will do good.
Great teacher.Just as long as you show up and do your work you will pass.
He's about the most confusing teacher ever. Basically just copies what's on his piece of paper onto the board with long paragraphs without explaining. Attempts to use "professional" language but turns out to be more confusing. To pass the class, i had to read the textbook and look at the examples on my own. I BARELY passed. Beware if you chose him.
If you really want to study math with a real university level, take him. His notes with his own style is professional, and furthermore, he has a unique mathematical insight!!! If you want to get an A, you are supposed to pay heed to every exam. Do not reckon the final is easy because the final is comprehensively tough!!!
Gary Ling has high expectations but offers so much in return. Try not to miss class and write down EVERYTHING!
Gary Ling is HORRIBLE! He is by far the worst teacher I've ever had words can not even begin to describe my frustrations with him. He's condescending when you ask him questions and is unable to use ordinary language to describe what he's doing which left me utterly confused.DO NOT TAKE GARY LING IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA!
Professor Ling is great. You're expected to have a good understanding of the prerequisites required for the course. He teaches you the core of the material, he wants you to learn, not just memorize formulas. If you plan on taking him, attend every class meeting, and study often. I took him during the summer, and it was definitely a challenge.
He's not a bad teacher, per se, but you definitely have to be attuned to the way he speaks. He makes you do proofs, and is very thorough and precise with his language and also expects his students to be. I think he genuinely enjoys teaching, but if you have a different style of learning he can be very difficult to learn from.
He is a difficult teacher, but if you DO ALL THE HOMEWORK, go to every class, and go to his office hours with any questions regarding the hmwk or practice tests, you'll do fine. He does everything he can to make passing the class possible; he HEAVILY curves tests, and he drops your lowest test score out of 4. Grade is based on 3 tests, 1 final.
Simply a terrible professor. Does very little to review the material, does little practice. Just drones on and on and on about mathematical proofs, most of which do little to prepare you for the calc course you will take after this. I slipped by because I knew much of the material. You won't likely be so lucky. Consider yourself warned.
Gary Ling is one of the smartest professors I ever had. He will teach you math techniques that aren't in the book. I'm in Cal now, and math has been a lot easier after drilling with Ling. Take him if you're interested in math.
Worst teacher ever! This guy is rude and condescending to students. If you tell him a correct answer he will find a way to tell you it's wrong. He grades very hard. A problem where other teachers would give 100% he will give 90. He needs to retire.
very good teacher. his appearance makes him like seem like strict teacher but he's very nice. Does his best to help u understand during office hours. Teaches the hard way to solve a problem first to help u understand the logic behind it then teaches you the shortcuts. Very organize when he writes unlike my cal prof who writes all over the place.
The single most brilliant teacher I've ever had, probably the most brilliant person you'll ever know. A lot of people on here complain that he is too difficult, bottom line is if you are responsible enough to take an intense university level class which strengthens your critical/logical thinking, take Prof Ling. Otherwise you will fail
His a Great Professor! If you want to learn, take him; you'll learn math in depth. Sure, his class is challenging but if you don't miss a class his lectures are helpful. His really approachable for questions and want you to come to his office hours. He always ask in class whether everybody understood the problem before moving on.
Don't take him for an easy A. He is a frighteningly good thinker, and he's going to teach you to think. You will feel uncomfortably stupid but he'll make you smarter in the process. He didn't make us turn in homework, so test scores determined the entire grade, but he grades on a 5/6 scale and was ridiculously generous with extra credit. <3
