do not have this professor, he is getting me kicked out of college because he refuses to submitt grades for transcripts to be sent out. He has been uncooperative, has not e-mailed, is disorganized, doesnt get stuff back on time, ect... the list goes on

Gary Luke's agenda is blurry from the start,he implements spur of the moment activities which are pointless and absurd. In addition, he is clumsy, boring, and idiotic. He is not intelligent enough to recognize content, just comma splice errors.

He is a terrible teacher. He is a very difficult grader and he doesn't turn things back to you on time. He has a "pass/no pass" in class essay as a final. If you pass it, you pass the clas, if not, then you fail the course Avoid him at all costs

Luke is an awesome professor. You learn a lot if you listen in class and actually open up the book and read it, take notes, and visit him on his office hours. He's very helpful. If you slack you will pay.

Excellent teacher--witty, smart, and helpful. He knows his topics, and if you re willing to do the work, you can get an A. I've taken several of his courses--the HUM10 class has field trips and movies as well as literature.

Luke is very vague and he spends most of his time trying to get students into the LAP. He is a joke!!! He projects his opinions onto his students and is cruel when he makes comments on papers. I dislike his "holier than thou" attitude and snobby

Partered with another teacher for this class. He's ok in here, cause she controls him. He has a lot he knows, but often comes off as "above" others. Just listen, smile, nod and always agree with what he says, you'll be fine.

He is really hard. He is really tough in grading papers, cruel remarks on papers. As it was said before he tries as much as he can to get you in LAP, which i think is fine. BUT he helps u as much as he can.

Sometimes vague, but overall a great dr. He is very open to different ideas and helps explains things so that you can come up with the conclusions instead of him pointing them out in front of you.

I couldn't get a straight answer to what he wanted in papers.Later,I realized it was because he wanted to leave things open to interpretation.He makes you work and has high standards,but I think thats important in a college level eng class. Good Teacher!

The worst teacher I've ever had, and I was in the military. It's now June 17, the class was over May 15, still no grade posted even though saddleback said the grades would post June 7th. Amazing that he still has a job.

He's not that bad. I got a B in the class and i never even opened the book. The tests are all based on paintings and literature and can easily be BSed if you kinda pay attention to one or two lectures between tests, EC on attendence

NEVER EVER EVER TAKE THIS TEACHER. Class went from ~25 to 7 and i personally did not even pass it. Tests are ridiculous, they have no relevence to anything. Doesn't even know what he is talking about.

despite what everyone says, he is a good teacher. just read every chapter, and study 1-2 hours before the test (3 tests, just writing). oral presentations are fun. he will let you pass if you come to class. he is not that bad. i got an A. take him.

You will learn about alot of paintings and pieces of litterature. Unfortunately, you will have to learn about them from the book (you have to read and take notes), because you'll fall asleep during lecture!! Feels like an art history class

The tests are soooo easy. You can write all the notes you can fit on a note card, making the test a definate A. The book is interesting, but inclass discussions are not that great. Focuses a little bit to much on English (grammar, puncuation, etc.) since he runs the english department.

Biggest a-hole on campus. A LOT of reading, A LOT of writting, tests, regular quizes, writting assignments, presentation, AND research paper!! TIP: don't get on his wrong side, or argue w/ him, he hates the bible and all christians so don't even go there. Very hard class. DO NOT recommend.

a lot of people complained about his class, but it's mainly because certain people didn't even pay attention or even try to be interested. the work is easy, he likes the idea of group work (as exemplified through group quizzes) and the in class essays are easy, or so i think. anyways, i got an A in his class without cracking open the book.

He has a Bad rep, but that's only b/c people dont like to put some effort in. If you just read, and pay some attention in class, you will be suprised at how easy it is! Plus you will actually remeber what you've learned! DOn't be scared

I had Prof. Luke a couple of years ago for both HUM 10A and HUM 10B. I am a math/science person and he helped me broaden my interests into art and literature and tie them in with what was happening in the world at the time. Another poster complained about HUM 10B...duh...it's an honors class. Expect a lot of work that will really challenge you.

This guy leads you into French art and Revolutionary facts through the back door. He makes you put together the dots and brings to life the artwork, arcitecure, and literature of the 14 century beautifully. My many trips to Italy made me enjoy this class even more, and helped me appreciate my travels even more. He presents an interesting paradox.

He is a terrific guy. His lesson instructions could be clearer. He gives students credit for just showing up! His assignments are easy, if you put forth some effort. He encourages and is really helpful. He has a passion for teaching which is felt when he lectures, which draws students in. Wish more teachers had his passion.

Terrific synthesis of dispirate topics, bringing together the art, literature and history of his subject with real excitement. His jokes are kind of dorky, but I appreciate that he's got a sense of humor, and is so helpful to students (especially if you attend office hours).

This class was a total bore. I took it "for fun" and ended up completely dreading attending. He constantly changed the directions for assignments and talked WAY too much. Honestly, I could tell he loved Shakespeare but he did not do a good job passing along his interests to the class. Just don't take a 3 hour class with him...

not the best instructor I had but not the worst. The material was horrible and really made me doubt the bible as having truth, his interpretation of the text only made me further doubt but I am fine now. If there is another instructor you could take you should any of the others are more clear. I got an A but would never do it again with him.

Luke is not well organized nor well prepared; he is perpetually late, asks for too much and grades very tough. Besides, he is just plain over the top with his expectations especially when compared to his actual effort to help you succeed. There are a lot of good professors at Saddleback, there's no reason to take Luke.

Well haha, I must agree with previous post in that Luke is a perennial tardy, once showed up 25 minutes late because he lost track of time, and does seem completely 'over' teaching. I don't want to personally attack, but as a warning - the class has many a dry and gray day, and Luke is too often disorganized and apathetic to his errors. sorry

I see a lot of people on here saying he is a good teacher. The problem with that is that it isn't true. Between his random lectures about things that don't even relate and his habitual disorganization, he is almost intolerable. I have never seen such a vague teacher in my life. Take this class only if you plan on being the teacher's pet.

I love Luke. Had a hard time at first, but went to his office hours and he was dying to help me. If you want to learn, take him - there are none better. But prepare to work for it, too! He is not the charity type so work is necessary. He can be hard to follow, but keep asking him the same question and he'll give you the answer you were looking for.

Professor Luke cares about his students and wants them to succeed. It can be difficult to get him to clarify what he wants out of a project. Attendance is a must in this class. You must also read the book to succeed because the quizzes are difficult, but he lets you work in groups alot of the time. I liked him as a teacher.

Prof Luke is a really good guy, really has a passion for teaching and loves his students-- he really cares. But, he is extremely vague when assigning certain material. He is willing to help you, no matter what and is a very intelligent guy. If you do the assigned reading and know dates time and places, you'll do fine on the quizzes.

He is an incredible professor once you show him that your not the average cc student. Attendance is mandatory so make sure that your there. Careful because he always has pop quizes on the reading from the night before. He has a tendancy to be vague on what he wants but if you visit him during his office hours you honestly get the best insight.

Luke is probably one of the most boring professors out there. The class wasn't too hard but I hated going! He somehow talks about a topic for an hour that has nothing to do with the lesson plan. Only take him if you can deal with his random tangents and super boring lectures.

I had little to no interest in yoga before this class and now I love it. He makes it fun, interesting, and easy. You don't have to push yourself too hard but you always have the option of going a little further if you're ready. Highly recommended for anybody. =)

Took him for shakespeare comedies. Loves the subject and the class starts out very interesting and the plays are good. Then the class begins going too quickly and everyone loses interest. An essay for each play, make sure you vote to do them in small groups because he grades more easily and they will be shorter. My grade still isn't even posted...

pointless lectures. quizzes every other class day, and essays every other thursdays. i must say he doesn't make it fun to learn about art. he takes attendance through the tests he gives out. i recommend you get a different teacher for Humanities 1, i wish i had dropped the class when i had the chance

This guy is pretty cool. I think he genuinely cares about his students, and is into the topic himself, so he makes it interesting for thinking people. Don't take his class if you just want to not do any work though.

Had his English class on Shakespeare a while back. His lectures tend to veer off-topic, most of the time about how much Shakespeare loved ****ity (awkward!). If you want an A on your paper, make sure all you talk about is sexual identity and then grammar check it thoroughly.

I should have had an "A" on our speech we gave I had people telling me how great it was. He then took my paper, which was my only copy and never returned it. Probably published now somewhere. He is hard to understand and is condescending.

Luke is a very eloquent speaker with jokes only this old lady laughs at. No midterm and no final, but easy term project. Quizzes on chapters are easy/straight from book. Tests are essays on artwork and lit. learned in chapters. Not easy but not hard. You need the book in this class to pass. He lectures a lot, which sucks, but he is overall good.

soooooo boring. the only fun part is getting into groups. he checks attendance and its part of the grade. some of the readings were really interesting but hes not an easy grader. i normally get a's on my essays but not with him. you have to really work for the grade here. its an ok class as long as you put in the effort. definitely need the book

Prof. Luke is crazy. at the beginning of the year he chooses favorites and from then on refers to his "non-favorites" as the kids who hang out by 7 eleven. Use the book the first week or two and then you ownt touch it after. horrible!!!!

It's true- Gary is an unorthodox professor. Yes, he does tend to go off on tangents completely irrelevant to the class, but he is extremely intelligent. His classes are indeed challenging, and he makes you earn your grade (there's a reason many honor students take him). If you're an incoming freshman, look elsewhere. Otherwise, Luke is tolerable.

Very encouraging professor who is a great appreciator of original thought. Is ambiguous to allow room for individual interpretations to be made. Intelligent and really cares about teaching. I had a great learning experience in his class. Reccommended, take ...only if you are interested in the subject. Slackers beware, humanities isn't for you.

Boring/hard class. The homework is easy. One group presentation, individual presentation, or an 8 page paper. Quiz/Exams are hard. Only one 3X5 single sided note card for quiz/and essay tests. Shows random youtube clips. Only gave us 20 minutes to write a compare/contrast essay, when the study guide said 40 minutes. Don't take in the summer.

Extremely helpful and encouraging teacher. He may run off on tangents habitually, but if you come to class, put a little effort in, and read the book, you are sure to get an A. And, if you pay attention, you might learn something, if not just about art, culture too.

Okay, Gary Luke is a joke - he'd spend 99% of the class talking about the history of Celtic culture and when there's only 5 minutes of class left we'll get our test. I'm pretty sure he cared less about the class than anyone else in the room, including the nine kids who blatantly ignored him and played computer games all day long. WHAT A JOKE!

Luke never finished his syllabus, came into the first class complaining how he actually wanted to teach 17B, and his time spent "teaching" was lost on himself (seeing as not a soul followed his tangents and rants against capitalism and democracy). To his credit, he did spend a lot of time apologizing for not finishing the syllabus. Thank you.

This is probably the hardest class I've taken. You sit there and literally have nooo idea what he is lecturing about. He speaks in metaphors and similes so it's hard to make the connection. He gives you 10 minutes to take a quiz, then after 2 minutes he says "1 minute remaining". I'm learning more out of the textbook then this class!

This guy talks so slow and just goes on and on about rhetoric and things I don't understand. He just talks about nothing for at least an hour each class. He is unclear about assignments. You barely use the $70 book. Don't take this class if you want to learn or get a good grade!

This guy will bore you to death!!! He made this one girl cry and kicked her out of class on exam day (he eventually let her back in). He didn't tell us that we had a presentation due til' the second week before class ended. Overall, very boring and tardy all the time and made us stay 10 min after class every time.

Taking notes in his class was impossible. I was constantly confused and didn't know what he was talking about and didn't know what to take notes on. Unless you want to have a hard time I would go for an instructor that is a bit more clear on what they are going on about for an hour.

Shows up to class late every day and opens with a rambling, totally off-topic speech for 10 to 15 minutes, before moving on to the actual subject in the vaguest manner possible. The work itself is not particularly hard, provided you can follow his meandering train of thought. Personally, he seems like an okay guy, but I still wouldn't recommend him

Very boring teacher. Goes off on tangents all the time and it is almost impossible to piece together what he is trying to get across to the class. Has no outline for any class and just goes off and talks about random things. Would not recommend this teacher, quizzes are hard, does not tell you anything that will be on them. Very odd

He's the easier grader between the two professors in Humanities 10A. Be sure to talk to him when you're asking something. He's a lot more understanding. As for the grades, just do welll on the 4 essays and you'll be fine. You can beautifully BS an essay and that'll be enough to get you an A/B.

Okay teacher but hum 10A with chattopadhya and Luke was a mess. If possible don't take this class with him. Lots of presentations. Directions are very unclear and the two professors have a hard time reaching a consensus when making a decision. Still managed an A.

Great professor. He is willing to help if asked. This is the kind of class for those who are proactive. You shouldn't have to be told to show up for class and do your work in college, he won't babysit. Go to his office hours, ask questions, and be on top of things and your reading and analyzation will improve tremendously!

Let me start off by saying he is very intelligent, but sometimes I think he doesn't realize his students may not be able to follow his his thoughts. There are lots of in class essays, so if you do poorly on one its only worth maybe 10% You have to constantly ask questions because he doesn't give out a planned syllabus, so you don't know whats due.

Must attend class because there is no syllabus so if you miss a class you may miss an announcement of when something is do. Willing to sit down with you till you fully understand something, always willing to help and has lots of times for office hours. You must buy the book because the in class essays are open book. The quiz's are from spark notes!

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. HE doesn't teach. he makes u read the chapter and take a quiz on what u read after you discuss the chapter. Horrible. Attend class you get points, which is extremely helpful. READ THE CHAPTERS. His voice is so soporific. I wanted to shoot myself. take someone else if you can.

Very easy professor only because he loves what he is teaching and therefore makes the class enjoyable! His quizs are taken from sparknotes so there is no reason to do bad. There were 6 essay, 3 in class and 3 take home. Plenty of room for improvement! You can easily get an A. Be sure to go to his office hours and show him your hard working. Take!

Terrible Professor. His class with Chattopadhyay was completely unorganized. They never communicated so classwork/readings were never clear. He DID NOT follow the syllabus. All exams were surprises. No joke. Including the midterm. NEVER responded to anyone's emails. Was never in his office during his assigned hours. Ive never had a worse professor.

Very friendly professor, some people like to take advantage of how kind he is. He is very helpful and willing to look over essays before you turn them in. All quiz's are from sparknotes so you can study before you take them! Lets you rewrite papers and do a presentation instead of a 8 page term paper. If you don't do well you didn't try! TAKE!

Loved this professor. Honestly, his class strikes my interest compared to the rest. I had no interest going into humanities, but surprisingly his class relates to my English1b and soc 1 class. Take him, he's not difficult. He just wants you to connect the past to the present.

Prof. Luke's class is a lot of fun. All the tests (5) are in class essays, so there is a lot of writing. He is very helpful in his office hours. He is also very flexible if you miss a couple of days or a test day. You need the book because the first couple of tests are open book. But you could most likely print the plays if you wanted too

The WORST teacher you will ever have. Honestly his tactics for teaching are downright nonexistent. He never clarifies anything. His lectures are filled with topics that don't even relate to the class. He does not follow a syllabus. There are 5 tests which are in class essays and if he doesn't like your opinion, he marks you down. Not professional at all. If you want to waste time becoming aggravated for a whole semester, this is the class for you. If not, I highly don't recommend this class.

Heaven forbid you are confused on something and have to ask a quest you won't get an answer, but you will get a 20min. lecture on something totally unrelated. I totally regret taking this class.

Disorganized and almost no direction what-so-ever, but once you accept this, you'll be fine. No simple yes or no answers to questions. Online quizzes are easy (open book, use etext/search). Compare/Contrast essays aren't too harshly graded. Term paper isn't completely terrible. Prof. Luke can be easily persuaded. Boring lecture. Overall okay.

I took him for English 1A, he's a nice guy but very disorganized, always changing the curriculum or due dates. Can easily get sidetracked with monotonous rants about other subjects.. The class wasn't relatively hard overall, although attendance does add up, and there are plenty of group projects. I was just frustrated with the lack of clarity.

Professor Luke is a very kind man. His class is pretty easy, as long as you show up to class and ask questions, you will pass. MAKE SURE YOU ASK QUESTIONS IF SOMETHING IS NOT CLEAR THOUGH. Professor Luke was a very helpful professor. He will help you when you need it, and if something is unclear he will explain it to you, but make sure to ask. He cares about his students and wants them to do well. If you come to class, participate, and turn in your essaysonline grammar homework on time, you will do well. Great class!!

The worst teacher I've ever had. Rambles on for most of the period about current events or how horribly evil Disney is. Doesn't clarify what is due or when. Doesn't teach you anything about writing. Seems like an easy A class, but not if you don't even know what you're supposed to BS. If you like the feeling of wanting to die, take this class.

Easy A if your writing skills are on point. Dual taught class with Michael Hanson. Feedback will center on asking questions about your ideas to get you thinking, won't necessarily be directly helpful. Rambles on with no clear direction, hard to follow, but the class was easy and his literature lectures were interesting.

I took his English 1A class. I found him to be personally a very interesting teacher. He doesn't give clear directions thats for sure. Meaning... you have to use critical thinking... in a class about critical thinking. Its a hard class thats for sure. So if you want a challenge, take his class.

Extremely sarcastic towards his students and calls you out in front of everyone. Speaks endlessly upon politics and has no correlation to English 1A. You must complete a 14 hour long assignment called "comp 3" and it's not free; due near the end of the semester. Felt like an online course, all hw and readings were online; learned nothing in class.

I am still in his class, but he is an alright teacher. If you are lazy and bad at turning in homework, don't take his class. I was expecting worse but he is a nice guy. if you are unsure about homework, you have to ask, and do all of the online hw! He respects you if he sees that you are trying. try sitting towards the front so he gets to know you.

Really not sure as to why Professor Luke does not have a higher rating. He is very clear in the essay syllabus, and gives good feedback. If you show him that you are actually wanting to learn the material taught in class, and not distracting others, you will do well. The midterm was an in class on demand essay which he prepares you for weeks prior.

Do extra credit/question journals/online hw- really easy assignments. try on essays, not that harsh of a grader. pick a good group for group essay! If he sees you are trying and you do your work, he will like you and you will most likely get an A. please do extra credit! it helped a lot. Go to class as much as you can, you get points for it

Hes a great teacher that cares about the well being of his students. Make sure you sit in the front, if he knows you he'll be more lenient when grading. Be prepared for his turbo weird personality, and for his long never ending lectures about nothing. I enjoyed him as a teacher once I got to know him.

I had the honor of being in several of Professor Luke's class over 20 years ago. He is one of the most influential mentors I've ever had. He held me to the highest expectations, pushing me to truly learn. I have since become a teacher, and I hope to impart onto my students at least a small fraction of the wonder he shared with me.

Lectures were definitely long, boring, and, at times, completely random. All of us in class would be genuinely confused on what he was going on about, and I did sneak out half way through a couple of times. With that being said, you could really do a lot worse than Luke. Theres tons of opportunity for extra credit, and the essays were not hard.

I took Gary Luke's class in 2017. Like the others have said, he likes it when you participate! He seems very fixated on politics and has a quirky personality, but that is pretty typical of professors. He really liked putting us into groups and he was very helpful if you asked a question. Just do the work and you will pass!
