a very good teacher, genuinely cares about what he teaches and his students, wants them to be successful, fun and approachable
Narrow in approach, but knows his history. Strong LDS slant.
Intersting insights into Democratic foundations, lots of videos, I fell asleep almost every day but still managed an A-, maybe it was luck, STUDY the practice tests
Passionate about US history and the hand of a supreme being in it. Teaches using a lot of videos and Power Point presentations. class can be boring, but most test questions come directly from notes. logical people will find tests EZ, use practice exams
Great Teacher. Very passionate about subject. Teaches the material like it should be taught, from the standpoint of the forefathers of this nation.
Very helpful and knowledgable.Great teacher!!!
You will never find a teacher who cares more than Bro. Marshall. He may or may not be the best historian but he is the best teacher in this department bar none. You might say he has a passion for what he does ;)
Excellent Teacher who is passionate about what he teaches. Genuine with his students. Strongly recommend him for American Heritage.
Sounds like the Clear Eyes guy! Good class, good teacher. Very passionate, willing to help. Tests are easy- use common sense and practice tests. Lectures sometimes VERY boring.
Great guy wonderfully exciting teacher.
Good class, a little eccentric. He reminded me of Howard Dean. But he taught a good class
Good teacher but huge class. Definitely a good teacher if you like meaningful dialog during class between students and teacher
I loathed this class. It was confusing, mundane, and monotone all semester. Don't take it. He gets on tangents all the time which are dry and confusing. He doesn't work with students at all. I wouldn't make my enemy take this class. The tests are REALLY hard also. They are long and confusing. Yuck.
passionate about the subject and presents material the best he can for the class size. He really tries to make it as easy as possible and really wants the students to succeed I would reccomend him for American Heritage. I learned a ton about american history that I had not realized before.
very excited about subject
Brother Marshall is a very good teacher. He knows his stuff and is so willing to share it with others. He loves what he teaches and is very passionate. The class is big and he teaches it the best he can with so many students. He has a lot of wisdom to give.
He is so passionate and makes you feel excited about what he is teaching as well. I loved coming to class! The material could have been hard to understand but he made it simple and still interesting.
He is very down to earth, and pratical. He doesn't force his opinion on you and is very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend him.
This class was a really helpful class to understand the history of American. He was a good teacher do the reading and you will do well and take your time on the tests and read all the questions carefully. You will get what you put in this class, don't skip it though!
arrogant bully that makes up answers in order to maintain his shallow self-concept. He thinks he knows it all and is always right-
I thought the class was easy, but he doesn't cut any slack. So stay up on it, he is not susseptable to sob stories. also if you paid attention in highschool government don't bother buying the book, you won't need it.
Very knowledgable teacher- knows more about american history than anyone else you will come across. Lectures are a tad dull, but if you study the outline in class you will do fine. He takes the test questions EXACTLY from the notebook. Attend lectures as he takes roll and do the practice exam before each test! Same questions, worded differenly
ATTENTION LOVERS OF HISTORY: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He teaches down to the class and tries to show off his knowledge. He doesn't put up with debates in the class and is always right (at least in his opinion). He's fine for people who don't like history, but if you love history, he'll make you loathe it.
Boring, His pace was too slow, we ended up not covering everything, take Bro. Walz instead if possible. Marshall teaches random stuff of little importance and expects his students to care about exactly what he cares about. He Sucks

This class was great. I learned a ton and this teacher was always willing to help. Though there was work involved, it was all really important and totally worth while. Teaching the lower level college class was very beneficial in helping with a future t
Didnt like his class at all.. im sure he knows what he is talking about but eek ,i couldnt pay attencion at all. note to him: lose the "fill in the blank" workbook

Good teacher, but can get boring with his powerpoint presentations!
He's an outspoken Mormon Democrate, so therefore I gotta love him!!! But his teaching skills need to be revamped and he must learn not to enjoy the sound of his own voice too much!!!!!!

I really liked the class, it was challenging but we are in college and that's what it's about. Being challenged and learning new things. And he was really helpful despite all the people in the class who had trouble.

A good professor who really likes his subject. He's not for kids who don't like his subject. He sometimes get ahead of himself, though. If you study and show up however, you can pass no sweat.
He knows the material. The class is only boring if you're not interested. You must study for the tests.
Can be boring, but he knows his stuff. You can tell he's passionate about what he does. You have to study for the tests and it's demanding, but I learned a lot.
Bro. Marshall really knows his stuff. Really interesting material. Make sure you prepare for class. As long as you understand the CONCEPTS he is trying to teach instead of just memorizing answers, you will do just fine. I really liked the class. Got an A.
If you do the work, show up, and stay awake during class, you should breeze through it. He definitely knows what he is talking about, and likes to talk about it. I recommend him.
It's the worst government class I've ever had. Often times I felt like he went off on tangents that had nothing to do with the course.
This teacher is smart but is boring a lot. He reads off of powerpoints and the class is so huge that you really dont learn anything. His tests are not so bad if you do the practice exams though and some of the reading questions are just common sense.
Love this guy. He's passionate about the topic, incorporates gospel stuff reasonably. People complained about his tests, but if you read and come to class you will have no problem. American Heritage with Marshall completely changed my outlook on the U.S. He teaches powerful stuff and believes it. Dont' take him if you don't want to take the class.
If you're into the kind of teacher that you only find at a church school, who will shove conservative doctrine down your throat and present it as fact, he's not a bad teacher.
He was great i was always excited to go to his class
Loves teaching and is very willing to answer questions. Classes are big. Studing is required to get good grades on tests but he gives you exactly what to study.
Ugh, if you appreciate history and American gov't, do NOT take this guy. He ruins it. I dreaded going to class because he taught to the lowest common denominator, just a dumbed down class for slow people
BORING teacher. BORING! Will ruin any appreciate you have for US History and US Gov't
Avoid this prof at all costs!

Don't listen to the negative things written about this guy. He is super! Don't get me wrong, he is difficult, and that is why people have bad things to say. He has an exceptional knowledge of the subject and does an amazing job at teaching. I guess if you're a crazy liberal all the truth and logic taught would be hard to swallow. He's not partisan!
Horrid teacher
This class was a joke, it was so easy. All the questions on the test were common sense so you can get an A without studying or paying attention. Kind of pathetic I think.
One of the greatest guys that you will ever meet. His American Her. class does consume a lot of time but it is well worth it. His classes are usually extremely large. He is one of the best teachers i have ever had.
Wow, Marshall's class was a tremendous foundation for me as I went into social science teaching. His understanding of the founding of our nation is unsurpassed and anyone even slightly interested in civics will find his class to be valuable. He is currently on an LDS mission and I'm not sure if he's coming back to teach or not. He's a gem.
Brother Marshall is an amazing teacher. He knows a lot about history and loves America. I have learned so much from him this semester. I have never been a huge fan of US History but he made it interesting and enjoyable. As long as you pay attention in class the tests are not too hard. Highly Recommended!
Has an excellent knowledge of material. Which makes sense, considering he specially made the textbook for the class. Has a very lecturing style (meaning he doesn't follow the learning model). If you do well with lectures, he's the teacher for you. If you have at least the IQ of cheese, do your homework, and listen in class, you should do well.
I really enjoy Bro. Marshall's class. He is a funny guy. He really has a passion for the subject. I didn't really enjoy Amer. history but, Bro. Marshall really has helped me to understand the importance of the Founding Fathers and our Constitution. Highly recommend. His tests aren't too hard, if you do the hw diligently you'll do fine on the tests.
Brother Marshall is an amazing teacher. I am not a huge fan of history, but he really gets you excited about it since he is so passionate about the subject himself. The tests are way hard if you slack off, but if you pay attention in class and study you will be fine. I would take another class from him if the opportunity arises.
Bro Marshall is WAY hard on his test so unless you are way good at test taking then don't take this class. I am barely passing because all he has are test and no assignments. 5 tests for the semester. He is fun and knows his stuff and expects you to LOVE history like he does. If you love history then he is for you but not for me.
I really enjoyed Bro Marshal for BOM. His class is way easy and all you have are simple assignments that make you think about what you are reading. It really helped me look at the BOM in a different way. He has good discussions. No tests :) Easy A
He has such a passion about what he is teaching, & it really shows. I learned so much from him, & if I read what we went over in class right before the test I always got an A because it's covered in all of that material. He doesn't try to trick you in his tests. Either you know the information or you don't, & most of it is common knowledge.Loved it!
Brother Marshall was a lot of fun! not only did he have a deep passion and understanding of the material he was very motivated in trying to help everyone learn the material too. He made himself available for any questions and did his best to explain things. Everything on his tests came straight from the reading.
5 tests for the whole semester. Your grade is based on test scores and attendance. You really need to do a lot of study on your own to understand things enough for the test. Tests are pretty hard and confusing. But no papers or quizzes.
BOOOOOOO this bro. Marshall is a joke. What ever happened to the learning model? This is a lecture class. I want to die every time I wold walk through the door. His tests are way to long and difficult. I would do every reading and still wouldnt understand the tests. Never take this class
This teacher sucks. His tests are hard and long. Its a good sleeping class. No learning model taught here. Stay away from brother marshall
This teacher is the worst. Don't take him!
I had brother marshall for religion and the information is really interesting, and his tests are easy if you just do the outline that he gives you. if you don't, they will be really hard. he lectures the whole time on the reading you had the previous day, so if you want to get anything out of it, its up to you.
Doesn't take student comments.Knowledgeable but boring about it.Assignments are relatively easy but he won't go over the answers. You mark your own attendance and grade your reading and assignments.I had him Tue/Thur and I skipped every Tue and didn't miss a thing. It did lower my grade, though. There is no class discussion.I texted the entire class!
If you really pat attention to what Brother Marshall is saying you will learn a lot. He loves America and is passionate that we learn to love it too. However, his tests are very hard, I started studying a week prior to tests, but if you put forth the effort you will see a positive outcome.
He has studied the material and knows his stuff, however sometimes he has difficulty sticking to the topic at hand. Lots of times he tries to push his own fatalist, political agenda, but overall a good professor. Sometimes he gets emotional teaching about the founding fathers. It's kinda funny.
He is hard, but if you like history hes the one to take. He has a real passion for it and want his students to too.
wow, this guy is a horrible professor. Nice guy, but can't teach, at least not at the college level. Maybe his condescension would work in high schoool though.
Brother Marshall is one of my favorite teachers because he teaches the truth, and he gives it to you straight and undiluted. I loved his tests because he didn't believe in "any of this 'choose the MOST correct answer' business." He said, "either it's right, or it's wrong!" And they were just like that- black and white- like Brother Marshall.
He is definately one of my favorite Professors. He teaches what you need to know with clarity, gives you the material you need and tests you on it. If you go to class, listen and read the material he gives you, it is honestly an easy class.
I loved bro marshall. Sure he lectures and expects you to read a ton but he knows his stuff. he might seem like he doesn't care about your opinions but he does, sorry he's smarter then you.
bro. marshall is very passionate about his topic. very helful. he only does lectures and movies. does not follow the learning model at all, which i liked. the only grade you get is your tests and a small fraction is attendance. i think the tests were pretty common sense but did require studying. if you go to class and read the book you'll be fine.
Marshall is an awesome teacher. He gets really into his lessons and enjoys what he's teaching. He will answer any questions you have and is very helpful if you are struggling. I would definitely recommend him as an American Foundations teacher.
Bro marshall is a very passionate guy when he teaches. he loves what he does and is VERY educated on what he is teaching. if you have questions he is willing to answer no doubt about that. The final grade in the class is whatever you get on 5 hard exams and thats it. a lot of reading and he is very strict to his textbook.would recommend someone els
Bro marshall loves what he does (he wont ever miss a class)and is VERY educated on what he is teaching. loves questions. The final grade in the class is whatever you get on 5 hard exams and thats it. a lot of reading and he is very strict to his textbook.would recommend someone else
You don't even need to do all the readings! just study before each test. He loves what he teaches. He is not boring. Highly Recommend!
One of my favorite teachers by far. A very knowledgeable, helpful and personable man who loves this country, school, and church. He KNOWS HIS STUFF, trust me. He is one of those few teachers that make me feel that BYUI is a legit college, not some souped up high school. He is preparing world leaders in his class, people who think and know true values
DO NOT sleep during class and DO NOT miss class. If you pay attention to what he goes over during class and if you read a little and study you will do fine in this class. You have to bring yourself to care a little about the topic or you will hate it the whole time! Kind hearted man that LOVES his counrty!
Brother Marshall is an AMAZING American Foundations Teacher. He knows SO much about this country, and is so passionate. He gives you study guides and really wants you to succeed. Your grade is only the average of 5 tests all semester. No homework except to read. He inspired me to become a History Major. TAKE HIS CLASS!! :)
He's an alright teacher but he's very bias. He teaches you what gary marshal thinks instead of what has been proven by historians. His test questions are seriously worded,"In gary marshals opinion." If you can learn how he thinks its an easy A if not good luck passing.
He's the most fair history teacher I've ever had or met. He's energetic and enthusiastic. He keeps things clear and let's you know how it is. He doesn't impose his views, and encourages us to do well. The class was moderately hard, but it was possible to do well.
This was one of the most worthwhile classes and teachers I've ever taken. Bro. Marshall has studied and thoroughly understands the subject. He presented the material as fact and was unbiased. The founding of America and the concepts of the constitution took on so much greater meaning to me in his class. Highly suggested!!!
Bro Mashall wants you to get a good grade and is fair. There isn't busy work, he just wants you to really understand the concept. Go to class and pay attention. Study for the tests with study guides and strive to understand the concept and you should do fine on the test. He's good to answer questions too. Way worth my time.
Brother Marshall is an awesome teacher! I would recommend him to anyone and everyone for American Foundations. He taught me so much and I desired to know the information for the tests because it helped me. He is awesome! Take this class from him! He does have his own opinion, but he tells you when it's his opinion.
ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS I HAVE EVER HAD. He loves what he does, he makes class interesting. The Spirit is present in his classes even though it's not a religion class. I have learned so much. You can ace his tests if you just pay attention in class. No homework assignments or group work. TAKE THIS CLASS FROM BRO. MARSHALL AND NOBODY ELSE!
I was not that interested in taking this class, and I was not looking forward to taking this class before going. Now, this is one of my favorite classes ever! Brother Marshall teaches by the spirit. Some people feel he is very opinionated, but he is very learned and is just honest with us. He is an amazing professor. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!
Only bases you grades from 5 tests thats it. tests are extremely hard! if your not good at taking test dont take this teacher
BEST professor i've seriously ever had. You only get graded on like 5 tests, but if you study and ask for help..you can get all A's no problem..he's SO smart and has given me perspective i've never had before. GREAT class..especially cuz i wasn't looking forward to it at all.
Avoid this teacher if your not good at tests. only over 5 tests! not a good class if you want an A
Great teacher, he wrote the text book and the tests so he gives you more insight than other teachers who use his book. Grade is based off attendence and 5 tests. Study and the tests are easy.
Don't take this teacher! There are only 5 test grades in the whole class and he isn't helpful at all!
Class is based on 5 tests and attendance. 75% of the questions on every test can be answered with common sense. This class isn't too difficult if you can study effectively and remember some details. I put in about 2-3 hours of studying for every test and was able to pull off an A with ease.
Awesome!! All you have to do is show up and read the book. No homework and only 5 tests. He really knows his stuff!
Awesome!! All you have to do is show up and read the book. No homework and only 5 tests. He really knows his stuff!
This guy is beyond intelligent! He is so awesome, he wrote the textbook that we use. it's fill in the blank and he lectures on it. Going to class is mandatory. After a few absences your grade decreases. There's like 4 or 5 tests and that is how you're graded.
A real American and most valuable class I've taken in terms of things that will help me now and in my later life. A good example and testimony builder. He cares.
I loved this class. He is very passionate, and really know what he is talking about. He deeply cares about the students, and tries to help everyone succeed. The things he teaches are fascinating, and highly applicable. He is challenging, but you come away feeling like you learned alot. I highly recommend him to anyone.
Took Bro. Marshall for American Foundations and loved/hated it. Super difficult class but rewarding if you put in the effort. You HAVE to study and fill in the blanks in the textbook or you won't do well on the tests. He wrote the textbook that is used in class, he's way smart and passionate. I nodded off a lot because it got boring sometimes.
Bro Marshall sure knows his stuff, He doesn't get it across very well though. He's very nice, but his teaching methods aren't very good. Your whole grade is based on 5 tests and they're each 60 questions long. There isn't any homework, but if you don't study ALOT you will fail his tests.
I LOVED Brother Marshall. I don't understand why people think he is difficult. I could have easily passed his class without attending lecture. His tests may appear difficult. But you have any brains about you at all you can reason your way easily through them without cracking the book. Love him as a person. Really lovely teacher overall.
Brother Marshall really does know his stuff, but he's not a very good teacher. The entire class is lecture with very little student input. He wrote the textbook and he really instilled a love of our country in me, but I got a bad grade He's a nice guy, but it's definitely a hard class to get an A in. Whole grade is based on 6 tests...not cool
Great teacher. very enthusiastic. Show up to class and do the work and you'll do well. Exams aren't too hard if you study well.
Bro. Marshall is a wonderfuly versed scholar. He is very passionate about what he teaches and that was best part of this class. The class is super easy. But keep in mind that it requires a lot of thinking. I loved his teaching style, it was simply right for me. However, he has too many students to personaly help everyone in his classes.
Marshall is a great guy on a personal level, but this course is unpleasant. His assignments are nearly impossible to complete. He openly criticizes students in class. Many student flunk assignments just because they are given too much to do in too little time. This would be an excellent experience, if not for the arrogant amount of work.
Bro. Marshall is phenomenal! His goal is to help you learn and understand all he teaches. He is only hard for some because he makes you think and evaluate what you are being taught. I would definitely recommend taking his class. If you wish to learn, that is.
Brother Marshall is very passionate. I love his use of his self-written textbook with the fill in the blank study approach. However, sometimes I feel he becomes too passionate and teaches opinions instead of facts. He often states "not trying to get political here" and then says something highly opinionated anyway. Still, great teacher overall.
One of the best teachers I've EVER had. He's super passionate, and has studied this subject his whole life, and knows everything there is to know about it. We used the textbook on a daily basis. If you don't study, you won't do well. I didn't get a super good grade, but I still thought the class was phenomenal! TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
Extremely unclear instructions. Ridiculous workload. Screamed at one student in class one day. Overly picky about assignments. Not around often for office hours, not helpful when he is around. If you ask him for help, you'll only be more confused.
Excellent teacher! Very well read, and uses what he has studied and watched in his personal time to enhance the class. Class could be difficult for those who do not like to read/ put in effort. Bro. Marshall is spot on with the things he teaches comparative to today's times.
Bro. Marshall is a good guy, but it bothers me how he treats his political opinion as fact. He says: "not trying to be political" and yet is very offensive if you are not super conservative, or liberal in any way. Good guy, but his class made me cry because I felt personally attacked. If you are at all liberal or democrat, DO NOT TAKE!
Bro. Marshall is an awesome teacher. You can tell he loves what he is teaching and loves teaching the students. study and you can do good. He keeps his views open for all political parties and answers questions as honestly and unbiased as possible. I loved this class!
He's awesome! I loved this class. He knows so much, and just loves what he teaches. I had a big question that really bugged me, and nobody could give me a satisfying answer, but He did. Study daily, and you'll get an A. He's great.
He was an awesome teacher. He's really passionate about what he teaches. Really smart and definitely knows what he's talking about. Never had to hand in an assignment, just keep up on the reading and study hard and you'll get an A
Brother Marshall is an excellent teacher. He knows his history! I have learned so much from his class but it does take a lot of work to do well on the tests. There are only 5 tests in the entire semester and that's all your grade is based on pretty much. He is a great teacher if you are willing to study!
Brother Marshall is an awesome teacher! He teaches with great passion and instills a desire to learn in his students. He always answers any questions you may have in the best way he can. There are only 5 tests, no assignments, and if you pay attention in class and study they are easy. Overall, AMAZING TEACHER!!! I didn't want this class to end!
Gary Marshall is one of the best teachers I have had. I definitely recommend getting him for American Foundations. He will get you excited about history where others may bore you to death. He is amazing.
Brother Marshall is such a great teacher. He has a passion for teaching the history of our nation. I would recommend anyone to take his class. His class is not EASY but in any course you will only get out what you put in. Anyone can have an A in his class
Good teacher. Lecture style class. Focused on the constitution mostly. No assignments-grade based on tests. I didn't do well in the class because I don't learn well with his teaching style, but he knows his history very well. Writes his own text book each semester - can't sell it back.
American Foundations became my favorite class because of this guy -- he is a very wise man and he knows basically EVERYTHING about american history (he WROTE the textbook). I really enjoyed attending his class and it was amazing how much he wanted to tell us about History as it relates to the gospel in the United States. Very good teacher.
This man writes his own textbook every semester. There are blanks in the textbook and you fill the blanks out in class and listen to him lecture. Pointless. I didn't get anything out of this class and the tests are absolutely awful. It's a huge class (240 people) so if you like one on one time, don't take him. Hard to keep up. Just not good.
Brother Marshall is a great guy but this class absolutely sucked. Unless you can memorize things as soon as they are said you will fail. The tests are super hard, and his lectures don't help me at all. DO NOT take if you don't like lectures with 300 kids
Brother Marshall is really nice but he does not follow BYUI's Learning Model and he thinks he is better than anyone. His tests were VERY hard, even after studying for hours. Lots of memorization and it wasn't really helpful. I don't even remember half the things we were tested on... He just isn't a great teacher for American Foundations.
WOW! Great man who knows what he is teaching. The comments on here aren't all valid. I only got A's on his tests and a 100% on one of them. It takes work but as long as you try and spend an hour a class period studying the notes (which he gives you... you just fill in the blanks and don't need to wonder what to study) then you'll do great! LOVE HIM
One of the harder american foundation professors on campus. Take it from a different teacher and save yourself a lot of stress.
This class was of absolute not use to me. Unless you think exactly like him, you will not understand his tests or lectures. His test took me almost 2 hours each to take. If you want to get a D or even fail... GO HEAD! I regret taking his class. I received all A's except for in his class.
Brother Marshall is probably the worst teacher I have ever had. He wrote his own textbook that is completely biased. His tests are extremely hard and he doesn't explain almost anything in class. He also gets mad when you try and get help outside of class. If you want a good grade in American Foundations don't take it from Marshall....
Bro. Marshall is a proficient in his field, but many of his ideas presented in class are entirely subjective. But you'll do well to take his tests with only HIS perspective in mind. This class was very informative in regards to our Church's view of America's history. Don't know if I'd re-take it from him though. GO TO CLASS.
Fantastic class! the whole grad is based on 5 tests but as long as you actually read all the material and study it a bit they are a breeze. Highly reccommend him, you will learn SOO much in his class!!! He really knows his stuff and actually cares.
Brother Marshall is a great teacher! His grading is tough (main grade is 5 tests throughout semester, no assignments!) but if you listen in class and do a little reading, the tests are a piece of cake. You absolutely get out what you put into this class. Great man. Funny too. Highly recommended.
I personally have a a lot of respect for Bro. Marshall. His teaching style is excellent and he does a great job at explaining the history of our nation. Just make sure to invest time and effort in reading the textbook and you will do good on his exams. He truly is a wonderful man and I very much like him as a professor.
Bro. Marshall knows a lot but I felt like it was just to much. He only has you take five tests, no quizzes just tests. Everything else he asks you to do is your decision but if you don't do it definitely expect to fail the class. You can't get the textbook from someone who has already taken the class, he changes it every year.
Brother Marshall knows his stuff, and he bears his testimony of the constitution, and about James Madison, and all those forefathers often. He has a monotone voice though, he is educated. I fall asleep in his class often though. He's a good teacher though, do your reading. or you will not do good.
If your looking for an easy foundation class take it from another teacher. He teaches a lot but its so religion based it will go against anything you learned in high school if you went to a non majority Mormon high school. I learned a lot but was overwhelmed and worked super hard to get a B. If your not good at memorizing facts you will struggle.
Brother Marshall is a really nice guy but I'd suggest choosing another teacher for the American Foundations class. He believes that everyone should be as smart as he is and gets mad when students get low grades on his exams or in the class in general. Doesn't seem to really care about his students. Wrote his own txt book which is hard to follow.
I loved Brother Marshall. He's not easy, you have to work for your grade, but I actually learned something in that class. Contrary to others claims you don't have to memorize a lot of facts, YOU JUST GOTTA DO THE READING! Pay attention to his lectures, attend class, and do your reading and you'll easily succeed in his class.
Honestly, all the people that say that Bro Marshall doesn't care about his students or that you have to think just like him in order to do well are ignorant. I just went to class and paid attention, didn't do ANY out of class reading and I got an A. Don't go trying to memorize facts, try to understand the principles he teaches and you'll do fine
I enjoyed his lectures but your grade is based on the tests. The tests are pretty hard. You have to really study hard. He had great lessons though. Found it very interesting.
Brother Marshall is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met and he gives a lot of interesting information in his class, but I hated his class. He expects you to basically memorize the textbook for the tests, and your whole grade is based on those 5 tests. You have to learn well by doing a lot of reading and memorizing to do well.
He is narcissistic. And believes things must be done his way. He does not listen to students, but claims he does. And believes students accuse him of their unsuccessful behaviors. Avoid him at all costs.
Bro. Marshall is amazing. I was so scared to take his class & almost dropped- SO glad I didn't. Class was interesting & I love the textbook. You fill it in as you go, which helps you stay alert. I would do daily reading and then spend the day before the test reading all of the chapters, then I would skim again right before the test. I got an A+ :)
Brother Marshall is amazing! Your grade is based of the tests, but they are not even that hard. You just have to make sure you do the reading before class and pay attention during class. Class discussions are the best! You learn so much! I totally recommend him!
Marshall is kind of old-school. He assigns a lot of reading, but honestly, if you pay attention to the parts he highlights during class and really go over the exam reviews, you'll do fine on his (lengthy) exams. All your grade is based on is 4 exams, 4 or 5 assignments and attendance.
I hated this class with such a passion it's not even funny. He was extremely arrogant and cocky and talked all class period about how smart he was and how other people's opinions were wrong because he's a member of the church blah blah. He was so close minded and didn't even teach anything relevant. It was required for my major and it sucked. Never
I hate this class, its all lecture with very little discussion in class. Your basically going to need to memorize the reading to do well on the tests which is a lot. If you don't do well on them you will not pass this class with a good grade period! He uses his own website so no grade calculator or online reminders on i-Learn.
Brother Marshal is very passionate about history, but he is extremely opinionated, too opinionated to be a teacher. You read from a text book he wrote, and are only graded on 5 tests throughout the semester. He shouldn't be teaching a class for Elementary Education students because he has no experience or expertise on how to teach children.
Go to class + pay attention + read the text + study hard + don't be an entitled complainer = success in Brother Marshall's class. Not difficult. Brother Marshall encouraged class discussions when questions arose. Thought this teacher was great.
Had you print out hundreds of papers for class, would go on for long periods of time talking about material that was not on the test or that dealt with the class. Use a textbook that he wrote himself, that is not published and does not make much sense
Here's the thing. He is very clear on what is on his tests if you just pay attention and do your reading like you are supposed to do. There is a down side though. He is kind of a jerk though. He is very stubborn and refuses to listen to anyones comments if they aren't parallel to what he believes. There are no class discussions because of that.
I truly enjoyed his class. I really liked how he brought the gospel into almost every lecture. This was not a hard class, but it was not an easy A. Do the reading, go to class, and study and you should be able to get an A in the class.
He has you print out the whole book that he wrote himself. First day of class he said he was overqualified to teach this course but does not tell you how to teach history and civics to elementary students. You have to know all of the material for the test so read the chapters and start studying. He is the only prof. who teaches this required class.
Brother Marshall is a great professor. He is vey patient about his class and makes everything very clear and understandable. He is a lecture class. Your grade depends on your exam scores and the many absences you have. He will give you everything you need to know for the exam, you just need to study on your part. He is more than happy to help!
Brother Marshall is very passionate about history. I've learned so much in this class. His teaching style may not suit everyone but I found it helpful. It is a tough class but I have enjoyed it.
Brother Marshall is a nice guy! His class is so boring though. He just lectures you for an hour and is so random. The text book he requires is so confusing. He expects you to study way more than you should for a 3 credit class. He only grades you on 5 tests, which are not easy at all. If you want to spend all sememster reading then take his class.
He wasn't so much teaching about elementary education as he was teaching about indoctrinating elementary students to be conservative, which is whatever. UGLY HARD tests. Long, long, hard tests. 4 of them. range from 60 - 140 questions. Memorize the constitution amendments and his personally written textbook and you're money. nice guy, bad teacher.
We don't have any assignments until the second half and even then not very many. This means that the tests are your entire grade. It sucks!! The readings are long and he expects you to know everything.
I loved Bro. Marshall. I loved that he was clear from the beginning what would be on tests. You basically had all the questions already written out along with the answers with his own written chapters you print out for class! No other teacher I've had has done that. His tests were a bit wordy but I learned a ton in his class. I thought he was great
His lectures are interesting, and informative. I find it funny reading the other reviews. They complain about a lot of reading umm 8-15 pages twice a week is a lot of reading??? Also only a few assignments later on in the semester. Not difficult, had my spouse take practice exam, without any studying missed one question. Ignore those who complain
Both me and my brother took him, I love him, my brother hated him. I think he is a great guy and extremely passionate about what he teaches. He made it interesting to learn. He has been one of my favorite teachers since I have been here. His tests were pretty easy IF you read what he tells you and if you pay attention in class. Its that simple.
Brother Marshall is a very passionate teacher. He really cares about the subject and expects you to get as much out of it as possible. He don't give much homework but his test are very hard and if you skip class you will NOT pass. He is easy to talk to but he really makes you work for you grade. Loved the lectures but hated the tests!
Awful, awful teacher. I love history and he made me dread this class. A professor should never make you dread any subject, but especially one about which you are passionate. Avoid Marshall at all costs.
I'm old and was reminiscing about some of my worst experiences at undergrad. I'm glad he goes by Brother Marshall now because when I took his course, he insisted we call in Dr. Marshal, against BYUI standard practice. I'm sure he has improved but his self-importance (as it was perceived by students) made the class difficult. Assignments were vague
