GREAT TEACHER to learn real chemistry, not memorize formulas. Very detialed oriented. Gives 150% to students, especially ones seeking help. NOT LAZY, puts in as much time into his "class" as he expects out of you. (Not easy, BUT FAIR!) Orga

By far the best teacher that I've had at oakton. He is always available to students who need help.
Best teacher at Oakton! One of a kind. Must be willing to work hard in class, but very rewarding in real knowledge.
Difficult and not allways fair. He is dedicated but expects too much.
This is a very committed and knowledgable teacher. The class requires hard work & dedication, but is extremely worthwhile. If u want to learn chemistry, definately take this class, but if u r looking for the e z way out, his class is not 4 u.excellent prof!
Very hard but will site down and explain thing to you until you get it; no book needed but, notes are all over the place -gets real excited when lecturing has no life totaly devoted to students lab are not hard no write up. Have to invest time to get a good grade may alot more office hour time
Best teacher I have ever met. Very dedicated and hardworking. Always there for students!! If you want to learn Chemistry well, this would be the best teacher. You will have to spend time and make the topics thorough to get a good grade.
Loved him as a teacher. I had him so many years ago...but still remember his dedication and love for the subject. I had to work hard for the grade.
Not a great helper, cant understand his lectures. He
He is very dedicated. Always ready to help student but his tests and homework kills. Beleive me i worked hard but i couldn't get 'A'.He is very helpful but He is confusing. if we go with the problem he make students confuse.
he tries a lot to help his students...but failed...confusing...hard...u name it!
HE IS A HORRIBLE TEACHER DONT TAKE HIM. HE IS THE HARDEST GRADER EVVERRRR
He's a teacher who expects so much from you but does not explain the material well.he would give you homowork on the new chapter without even explaining it,so you would have to learn everything on your own.if you go to his office hours he's helpful, but in class he's not.he can't manage time, unclear in expaining.almost impossible to get A.he sucks
Professor Mines was a very difficult grader and unclear on material on the tests. Half of all the students in my class failed. He also has no time managagement.
he confuses people. he has no time managment and lets class out a minimum of 10 mins late every time. he makes things much more complicated than they need to be. i got an A in my other chem class, but ended up with a low C in Mines' class. very unreasonable grader with homework/prelab/labs.
worst teacher ever! no time management. exams are not straight forward AT ALL. makes things much more complicated than they should be. worst oakton experience!
aaaaaahhh....i still get nightmares....students who were going to be chem majors lost their interest in chemistry....3 out of 4 students will fail in his class....tooo confusing....
hardest teacher ive had, not clear at all, unorganized in class notes, doesnt return work until the end of semester, test is nothing like practice stuff, very unclear, only about 4 people passed class
Nice guy, extremely difficult teacher. he means well but ends up making it more complicated. tests impossible. class gets out atleast 5 min late. excessive hand outs + thorough in-class notes expected to be taken. hard and detailed grader (gets down to 1/4 points). very willing to help student understand but explanation makes material more unclear
Good person but very desorganized and confusing in class, do not correct labs on time and takes too many point of if you do not do the assignmets on time. I do not recommend.
Don't ever take this teacher!!
Hard, Confusing, Strict, Demanding,Perfectionist. If you like chemistry do not take this teacher ! You will hate chem after this class!
he is so freaking hard does not curve grades on test gives only 10 pts for like 11 page homework and takes of 1/4 of a point no one gets a perfect 10 on anything unless u have his previous hw assignments take his class if u hate A's and like D's and F's but he is a great guy he loves to help out and try to make u understand but u will get confused
this is a continuation have so much to say but not enough space so just DONT TAKE HIM IF U DONT WANT TO FAIL and to those who take him get ready to get screwed!!
Such a hard class and I love chemistry! No mercy! Way too strict on grading, enourmous amounts of work graded very roughly, no one gets an A in this class. Believe me a university level chemistry class is easier than his. If your a chemistry major you will probably end up changing your major after him.
What a nightmare! The pickiest and most detailed teacher I have ever encountered. If you are taking chemistry just as a gen. ed stay FAR AWAY from him or just stay away all together. He knows the material but can't teach and is so strict to the point that he will lower an assignment a full letter grade if you paper clip not staple your work!!!
He was by far the worst teacher I have ever had. His lectures jumped around all the time, and he never explained anything coherently, even during office hours.
Do not ever take this class! It is waste of money! You will never even come close to passing unless you already have your PhD in chemistry. He is ridiculously hard and very picky. About 2 people passed his class. His lectures make no sense and his exams are nothing like practice problems. He is seriously the worst teacher at Oakton.
He is a good professor. Knows and loves chemistry, explains fairly well and makes sure you learned the topics. You'll have to work really hard to get a good grade in CHM122 though. Homework is hard, but if you do it, you'll do well on the tests. Labs are also hard to get 100% on. However, if you ask him to clarify something it, will always help.
Just an awsome CHM teacher I had for 121 and 122. If you want to learn the topic and not get a FREE A like some other classes, go with him, you wont regret. He is always there to answer any question and to explain as much as you need to. He is just awsome. He is one teacher that I am so grateful to, for him commitment.
Awesome teacher for Chemistry. His exams are not as detailed but if you study and take notes on a daily basis, you will pass. He is extremely helpful when it comes to answering your questions and any problems that you may have in the class, he answers them. I reccomend highly to have!
Great Prof! v. helpful (especially in labs) and always makes himself available. Fair grader. Homewk is hard (usually ~ 12 Q's from book) but u have a wk to do it. Tests are not hard but tricky and are worth most of ur grade. Grade scale is: 88-A, 78-B, etc. Extra Crd. of ur choice @the end (he has to approve it). Not an easyA but its worth taking!

well first I'll start with where in the world he came from especially to be a teacher? he is unclear, not very responsible, can't really explain without making you feel stupid. talks way to much about just one simple thing. very controlling!IF YOU DON'T WANT TO FAIL DON'T TAKE HIM PERIOD! I had 5 on AP chem test in high school but failed chm121.
Difficult teacher, the worst one in town, handouts not helpful, his vague explanation makes a simple topic more complex, Doesn't like dark colored people. If you have any desire to get good grades, don't choose this teacher.
HE IS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! NO ONE CAN PASS HIS CLASS! EVEN IF YOU GO TO OFFICE HOURS YOU WON'T PASS! HE IS AN UNFAIR GRADER AND PLAYS FAVORITES! HE WON'T PASS YOU, SO BEWARE!
Tries very hard to explain and be helpful to his students. very dedicated. But despite his best efforts he made class intolerable to the point that I just gave up by the end of the semester.
One of the most dedicated, intelligent, and challanging professors out there. Lots of structure and he will always help you to the fullest. Understand that before taking his class you must be ready to commit to a lot of studying. Grade scale: intelligent (quantitativly) + hard work = A... Moderate intelligence + hard work = B. Do not expect more.
Prof. Mines is an awesome teacher!! He is very knowledgable, and is ALWAYS willing to help students. He reiterates EXACTLY what the book says, so READ it. Problem Sets are difficult, but the more you put into them the better your tests are. SEE HIM FOR ANY PROBLEMS you have, he's there and wanting to help!!!
Had him for CHM 121 and CHM 122. Very help and full on dedicated.Make you want to love chemistry and gives it his all. Won't mind staying after until 12PM if needing help. Always fair in and makes you think. Won't miss out on his teaching. WILL NEVER FIND ANOTHER CHM TEACHER MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE AND PASSIONATE ABOUT CHM!!!!
The class was challenging but will never regret taking his class. Has a new of making you think about every topic. Truly cares for his students and wants them to do well. Great teacher over all
Loves to teach chemistry.Never met a teacher more dedicated to the subject or his students. Challenges you to think hard and differently. Would take him at all cost. The class wasn't an "easy" A but i did get an A with handwork.
I don't know if everyone else is talking about the same teacher? I hated his class. Puts you down and makes you feel like your stupid. His tests are extremely hard. I used to love Chemistry until I took his class. He says that he wants to see his students do well, but he definitely doesn't act on his words!!
He is the best teacher I've had at oakton. Dr. Mines is hardworking, dedicated, and intelligent. This class is not an easy A, but if you want to learn chemistry, take this class.
Prof. Mines is very knowlegable when it comes to Chemistry. He knows a lot and you can tell he loves the subject. However, he isn't good at teaching. He never has time to explain anything and goes off on horrible tangents. If you don't go to the tutor you won't do good, unless you knew a lot of Chem already. Don't take if you want a good grade.
Don not take him if you want to get a good grade and good understanding about chem. He is really confusing and hard to understand. WHenever i asked quetion about something i really didnt understood, he would briefly explain to me that really didnt help at all. HE is always never on time during class and just rashes through the class.
Professor Mines encourages students to come during his office hours for any help needed. He may go off on tangents and repeat concepts sometimes; however, it is better to undertand the material and be educated rather than be ignorant (for anyone who is serious about learning). If you want to learn chemistry, you should definately take him.
He is not a good teacher. He does not have clear lectures and he is all over the place. I would reccommend another teacher definately not hime.
Yes Dr. Mines's class is tough, but thats for your own benefit. If i would of know about this web page before i registered for him I probably would of failed my Orgo 1 and 2. He will teach you everything you need in chem. He is a picky grader but that really teaches you well. He curves exams and is ALlways wiling to help. Im not a nerd and was
horribe im chem back in HS, but he saved me and the rest of my chem classes. Your grade is up to you, you choose to study you will get a good grade with him or any teacher, but if your planning to slack off now and than take more chem later...i recomend you change your mind set. This is one of the best pros at Oakton.
WORST PROFESSOR FOR CHEMISTRY. DESPITE HIS GREAT INTEREST IN CHEMISTRY HE CAN NOT TEACH WELL TO STUDENTS. ALWAYS GETS OFF TANGENT.IF YOU WANT TO PASS CHEMISTRY 121 THEN I SUGGEST "DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!"
WORST TEACHER FOR CHEMISTRY!
Prof. Mines' class is challenging, I'll admit. But I learned a lot because he really cares about how his students do. He is a really good teacher, one-on-one especially, and he loves chemistry so much it's hilarious. If you want to understand chemistry, take his class!! And DO the homework!
If you want to learn chemistry, and are willing to work hard, this is the professor to choose. He loves chemistry and teaches it like he loves it. Take advantage of the extra help he is willing to give and do the homework. Taping lectures might also help...he talks really fast! Don't expect leisure in the lab. He often lectures there too.
I took this class, and dropped in two weeks. Its ok, but the information was hard, and labs were not interesting at all. On top, his grading system is very weird. He does like, 1/16.. etc. Very crazy. I would not recomend to take Chem. with him.
He teaches his class with passion. If you need help, he will be there for you. He was promt with posting homework answers. He does a lot of work for the class, so there will be a lot of materials for you to get extra help on. I really loved his class. It was very refreshing to see someone who loves what he does. Very glad that I took his class.
He is in meaning a real teacher who really cares about his students
Professor Mines is a great professor and will go out of his way to help his students. I had for 121 and 122. If your willing to work hard, take his class it will without a doubt pay off with a deeper understanding of chemistry. I took O. Chem in Madison after Mines and I'm glad to say the knowledge I gained from him payed off.
U'll leave the class knowing more about chem than you ever did. The problem is he is a VERY PICKY AND HARD GRADER! The average test scores were 70%.And these were the kids who studyed for hours a day. So whats more important fully understanding chem or getting that A. I would not recomend taking my mines too anyone! Unless there ONLY taking chem.
I think many people exaggerate a lot about him. He is difficult for those who struggle in science and easy for those who succeed. He is helpful, but very stubborn who takes off points for many things that don't fit his description. He uses lab as lecture, like seriously. He is disorganized and don't expect to know your final grade till the very end
Professor Mines knows his chemistry very well, however he is one of those professors who is "too smart" to communicate with students. He covers material very fast and answers questions in the same manner. I only recommend taking him as a last choice unless you are confident in chemistry and do not require any help.
He is a good teacher, but tries to teach you everything about chemistry in one semester. he's a picky and hard grader. Hard to get an A, but if you study a lot you can get a least a B .If your taking other science classes may not want to take him. Don't take him if he teaches 4 or 6 week class. You will not sleep.
Gary Mines is not a good teacher and if you consult your lab partener or work on labs with them he will accuse you of cheating. He is one of those professors who make people hate a subject.
prof. Gary Mines is the best professor i have ever seen. he is humble, and he knows what he is teaching. the importance is the get benefit, and he is the type of a professor who can help students seeking knowlege. i haven't seen his grading yet as i'm not yet finished the class, but i know that he is a good professor in every aspect.
To be fair, I have rarely seen a teacher like him, who actually cares that students grasp the subject He always makes time to help you out. That being said, he makes you an incredible amount of tedious and pointless work, which he grades really harshly, and doesn't ever hand back to you. This teacher's flaw is that he is far too hard to please.
Lots of work but Professor Mines is more than willing to help you understand the material.
Jumps around way too much from topic to topic and tries to teach you EVERYTHING in one day. Lab days are the worst; you don't get to go home after you're done, instead he decides to teach you even more with the time remaining. His lectures continue past the time you're supposed to leave almost every day.
I have taken many professors, especially in 4 year universities and I have never had a professor like Mines. He is one of the most passionate professors that I have ever met. He actually cares about teaching and he teaches perfect. You will know chemistry better than ever but he grades difficult, his exams are too hard getting an A is hard.
I would not recommend taking any Chemistry classes with him unless you have to! He is very intelligent, but not a very effective teacher. He trys to teach more materials in one day than needed, and he even takes time from lab to lecture. You will most likely spend about 8-10 hours per week doing homework and studying! He's also a very picky grader.
Do NOT take him. Unless you plan to be a chem major and you love studying on your own... Then don't. He will spend hours talking and then another 2 hours to continue talking during your lab. Many times he left us with only 40 min left to complete a lab! He takes away so many points. Just don't do it.
The worst professor ever... DO NOT take him. his grating is unfair and takes points off for little stupid things. His exams are very confusing and lectures during the lab time. he Literally uses every minute of lab time to finish class lecture.
If you are the type of student who prefers to... - actually learn something, - understand the material instead of memorizing - have a helpful professor who goes above and beyond to help you then you should takes Mines. *If you are only focused on just passing the class without trying to understand anything, you are better off taking others.
Do not be deceived by the good scores he has gotten, he is really hard. I'm not a bad student, I usually strive for the A. This guy is such a cock, you have to know the material backwards and apply 5 concepts for one problem even though you learned it separately. Beware, expect to put in at least 20 hours studyin addition to the HW just to test 75+
This is the hardest class I've ever taken in my entire life! He is a great professor, no doubt. He is also very educated and qualified. But the problem is that he asks WAY too much from his students. Most of us are juggling 3-4 other classes and a job and it is impossible to keep up with the amount of work you have to do in this class just to pass!
Professor Mines is a very passionate teacher and will give you every opportunity to succeed. He is very detailed focused and to get an A you will need to understand the material not just memorize facts. If you really want to learn about chemistry this is the guy to take.
Yes, he is passionate about chemistry, but just because you know it doesn't mean it can be taught. Clearly he needs to learn how to teach. Also he is pretty much smug, anal and gets down to knitty gritty in terms of grading. Too much hw and not enough time to get anything done. Always goes over 10 minutes every class. Don't recommend
By far the worst professor I have encountered he grades to hard and most of his exams are out of materials he give and lectures are long and boring and he takes long time to complete the materials uptil the last week he cuts marks at even small parts
He can be very condescending and teaching methods are ineffective. Assigns a lot of work which to me is just busy work because you scramble to get it done by the due date as oppose to actually learning the material. Petty grader. His tactics/approaches to teaching just don't make sense. Would not recommend.
Mines is an excellent, well-thought-out, and thorough professor. You can expect to spend about 8 hrs a week on his outside assignments (readings/homework/projects), which is a national standard (you spend about double the credit hours a week for outside work). He is at your disposal for any need or problem. You learn a lot, leave well-prepared.
Prof. Mines is the hardest professor I've ever had. He always goes past class time, which is inconvenient when you have another class or a job you have to get to after his class. Yes, he knows a lot about the subject, but he forgets that we don't. He sends a lot of work (last minute!!) and expects you to know things he didn't even teach!
Terrible class and professor. Assigns way too much work and takes forever to grade and is a petty grader at that. He tries to cover everything in this course to the point that topics get rushed. Especially towards the end of the semester. Hated every minute of this class.
Prof. Mines is a very knowledgeable for chem. However he grades strictly and returns things slowly. He lectures even through lab. He does want students to succeed but he requires a lot of things to be done. He uses the tactic of "the more you practice the more you will get it" when it comes to homework but the amount he gives is alot for a week.
Harder than a university level course, requires 12 hrs/week to do well, too much work. Dr. Mines however, really cares about his students and puts them first. He is very accessible if you need help and willing to put in the time to help you if you need, but he can only do so much. It is up to the student to study hard and work hard.
Avoid him at all cost. Take other chem teachers if you can
He gives A LOT of work (too much if you ask me), but he reciprocates and grades it all with specific feedback. Mines is dedicated and a wonderful professor, but probably not for you if you're never going to take another chemistry class again. Definitely recommend him if you need to take more chemistry classes since he's very thorough.
Dr. Mines is a tough grader and he gives a lot of homework, but the homework really helps. The class is very lecture heavy, but he is a professor who cares for his students and wants them to understand their material. Careful though, take the class if you are willing to work hard and spend hours doing homework.
Dr. Mines is one of the hardest professors I have ever taken. He gives an obscene amount of work. Get ready to commit 8+ hours outside of class to complete all of his assignments. His lectures are long and tedious, he lectures during the lab period. That being said, he is fair if you show him respect. If you miss a single class you will be behind.
Avoid at all cost
He is very slow at grading and is not a good teacher. He cannot teach for his life. He may understand chemistry but does not know how to correlate it to his students. He does not understand that we get homework from other classes and he expects us to finish 5 long assignments within 2 -3 days. I had to drop his class because it was too much for me.
Nice guy, but not super great at teaching Chemistry. Goes on tangents every class, runs over the class time limit frequently, lots of homework on labs and lecture, crunches in several exams in the last few weeks, slow to grade (no grade available until the last week). He is nice though, and at least the homework material is tested on the exams.
He is great at teaching chemistry, but he's very slow on grading. We didn't receive any feedback from him about what our current grades are, since he is very slow on grading them. This has put me in a great disadvantage for studying for the exams. Also he didn't bother with grade updates. I had to estimate my grade without some of the sheetsgraded
slow grader, takes points off left and right on exams+ homework, and grueling lectures. exams were extremely difficult, and it didn't help that he'd take off points for the simplest things too. this chem 122 class was very hard, coming from someone who usually gets As and occasionally a B. not a good class if you're smart and a procrastinator.
The class was pretty hard, but Gary was a solid prof. Some people may give bad reviews because the tests are pretty hard and there's a lot of work. But Gary will 100% spend outside of class time with you studying, and he really cares if you care. An A is earned, but reasonable if you ask for help and keep up. Gary is really nice.
CHM 122 is not an easy class, consequently exams are not easy either, not related to the professor. Prof Mines teaches you the concepts, so you can succeed in the following classes. He grades the assessments in a reasonable time, with feedback, not only grading. Study, read the material, do every assignment to your best and youll do great!
Best teacher ever! So much homework holy cow. Is ALWAYS able to help in office hours. If you work your tail off on Problem sets (Homework) your set for the class. He gives out-Pre lab, Problem Set, Pearson hw, and Postlab. Has answer key to PS to look at while you do it. and is a good study guide. DON'T TAKE CLASS WITH MORE THEN 4 OTHER CLASSES. :)
Professor Mines is under the impression that when you take his class, it is the only class you are in. His homework load is more then all classes in any of my semesters combined. If you are not continuing down the chemistry field DO NOT take his class. He is a great lecturer and very nice but bombards you with work and stress.
I have nothing against Professor Mines as a person, but man as a teacher? He will almost never finish his class on time, expect 5-10min overtime at the very least. If you don't live, breathe, and eat Chemistry, your chances of understanding Mines, let alone passing is slim to none. Do NOT take this class unless you are planning to be a chemist.
Gary Mines is the worst professor Ive ever had in my college career. At first, I thought he was helpful, but I then realized I never understood a word that man said. He rambles during lab/lecture to the point you have no clue what youre doing, he gives out WAY TOO MUCH busy work, and he makes all of his exams. This class is impossible.
As a person, Mines is amazing, but as a teacher? He rambles about nonsense during the class and he always goes over his time. He gives out A LOT OF HOMEWORK and expects it do be done by the next class period. His exams are impossible because he takes lots of points off for no reason as he does with every assignment as well. REALLY DONT RECOMMEND!!
Mines was the most difficult professor I have taken in my life. He is the toughest grader and so disorganized. He would send us labs between 12AM and 6AM on Sunday night. I did not learn a thing from him, a great person but an awful teacher. Hard class/ grader/homework/exams. Prepare to spend 25hr+ per week and you will have to to teach yourself.
This guy teaches chemistry, so there is no way he can make it easy. However, you can tell he knows his stuff and is passionate about it. He can be talked with and is generally a cool instructor to learn from. Its Chem, its gonna suck, but it sucks a bit less when its with Prof Mines.
Part III: Personally, he made getting into a BSN program seem impossible. Avoid taking him at all costs if taking Micro or A/P. His meticulous style of grading WILL take away time studying for those classes. If I could manage Pharm and Patho with 3 other classes, but couldn't manage his Chem with Micro/APII that says something.
If you want to fully understand what the course description has to offer, take Gary Mines. I have never had a professor who was as excited to teach chemistry as he is. He is helpful, a fair grader, empathetic to his students, and overall, a great professor. Chem isn't supposed to be easy. It requires a lot of energy! However, he's a great catalyst.
This class is not easy but found the homework and assignments online to be helpful in learning the material.
Hardest class I've ever taken. I probably spent 30 hours a week on homework and studying but if you go to office hours and ask for help you will be fine. He always finished lectures late and labs go even longer. If you wanna learn this is the professor. If you want an easy A good luck because it is not gonna be easy.
He is a very nice and understanding person, but not so much as a teacher. Insane amounts of homework (15-20 hours a week), constantly crams and goes over time in lecture, takes off points left and right just because, and has extremely difficult exams.
At the very start, you will need to read everything and watch 3rd party videos to fully understand some concepts. Mid-way through the course it gets narrowed and what you see on HW will be there on exams. This course requires more than enough time, so keep that in mind. Professor Mines is one of the best. he's passionate and fun in labs.
Professor Mines was one of the hardest professors I have ever had. Not only would he give you loads of homework which at least took 10-20 hours a week. He would take points off on grammars, if you didn't show all your work, and explanation. On top of that he would go past lecture time many times and lecture through labs. He never grades on time.
Professor Mines would give 10-20 hours of hw a week and would grade very harshly. He would take points off on grammar, all work not being shown, explanation not being good enough. He never graded on time and you wouldn't know your actual grade before finals. He would always go past lecture time and on top of that lecture through lab.
A disaster.
Good professor if you want to learn the content or taking organic chemistry afterwards but if you want to get it over with and want an easy A/B, he is not the professor.
The most difficult and mentally stimulating class I took at Oakton. For better or for worse, Mines will teach you how to truly understand chemistry—after transferring for my STEM Bachelor's, I realized this class prepared me excellently. The workload's rough, but it's never outside the scope of lecture—if you struggle, he truly cares and will help!
He is a good person, but not really a good professor. He assigns tons of work from written work, mastering chem work, and lab work. He always goes past class time ( which caused me to be 10-15 mins late to my next classes), and also expects you to watch even more videos about course material.
Professor Mines is passionate and makes the challenging course material engaging. Study hard, use resources like Unstuck study, and you'll succeed in this rewarding class.
Had him a while ago, day one after seeing him lecture and amount of work he assigned for one week I knew it wasn't going to be easy. He is very unclear in lectures and also gives too much work especially initially, from memory assigns “responsibility points” which seems quite extreme. Zoran is “least bad” option between him and mines with respect.
Avoid this professor if you can. While I can tell he's very passionate about teaching and geniunely cares for his students, the workload is extremely heavy and he's very particular about grading. Answer keys are messy + too much info. Consistently goes over the lecture time and any important announcements are made last minute.
Avoid this professor. He's a great guy and very passionate about chemistry, but the way his curriculum is set up is just very tedious and time consuming. Very tough grader, long assignments and a lot of topics you have to teach yourself. Extremely difficult exams. Super lecture heavy and always goes past the end time. Save yourself the stress.
Please take another professor if you can. The work load for this class is insane and he's incredibly picky. Always goes over the class time and puts out announcements at the last minute. Save yourself the stress. Takes the entire semester to grade things, it's actually insane. Just please avoid if possible.
