He can't teach.... Don't take him
He is very smart but his exams are horrible i wouldn't recommended him if you want a bird course...
He's a WONDERFUL professor!! He may not give bird courses, but he's EXTREMELY INTERESTING and cool as hell. His exams are straightforward, and he doesn't take attendence. He's more than willing to help his students. I definitely learned a lot!
just go from the notes, not the textbook and u will do fine. pay attention to what he says and u got an a. hes pretty crazy and doesnt own a tv, thats pretty much all i remember
BORINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
nice guy but his tests are hard..dont buy the book just go by notes..
I would say that he is nice professor. He teaches clear and streightforward. Notes are really helpfull and usually final exam is easier than the midterm. Talk to him and he'll help u. U'll get a knowledge and at least "B" for sure!:)
hes a real cool guy, his tests are hard, make sure you pay attention to lectures and keep up with the readings...if your looking for an easy A dont take him, and dont expect any type of review b4 tests
He is the best teacher ever. All you have to do is go class, keep up with your reading and show him that you are interested in the class. He is one of the best teachers at SJU.
He is a good and very knowledgable professor, but his tests are very difficult.

HE'S A GOOD TEACHER, HIS TEST'S AREN'T SO CLEAR, BUT IF YOU STUDY HIS NOTES, YOUR FINE
tests are hard but he's a great teacher. study the notes, ask questions and u'll be okay.
Absolutely a great teacher and brilliant in the economics subject. Additionally, he's an SJU alum. He covers a lot of material but makes it interesting and you end up learning the material very thoroughly. I wouldn't change a thing.
I was riding on the bus trying to study when I heard his ranting and raving. I'm impressed that he actually cares about SJU. Finally, a prof with brains, heart and a cute moptop.
Took him for macro and hist of eco thought. He's an awesome professor. Tests are fair.
Took him twice, that says something. Good teacher, very helpful if you ask. Pay attention and take good notes and you will get an A.
very knowledgeable proffessor and Kind....best econ professor at SJU...not the easiest....MUST attend EVERY Class....maybe not every but defintely go. he can answer just about any question in micro or his of econ thought. good guy
very knowledgable guy.....knows it all and loves to teach. ask him anything but must attend class....
MY ALLTIME FAVORITE TEACHER EVER!! He makes class extremely interesting and although his tests aren't easy they are very fair if you study and do the work. Genuinely cool guy. If you see him, take him!!
Excellent Professor! He is extraordinarily knowledgeable. As a student in his class, you will be taught interesting lectures and your already existing Economics knowledge base will be expanded. Dr. Mongiovi's exams are slightly challenging but his lectures are clear and he is very thorough.
HANDS DOWN THE BEST PROFESSOR AT SJU!! He really makes a boring subject really interesting and gets the entire class involved. Although his tests are a little challenging, he is more than willing to offer extra help and is a fair grader. Take him if you actually don't mind learning something
wow! we hardly get to read so many positive comments about a single prof. so tht def. talks so much about him. He is an excellent prof. who really teaches u and wants u to learn. as far as tests go, u shud b taking notes and if u go thru them b4 the test u will be fine....trust me if u care about studying and if u think u deserve, then u will get A
This professor is great, his lectures are very interesting and he offers extra help after class. Definitely one of the best ECO teachers in SJU!!! His tests are a bit challenging, but he is a very fair grader.
knowledgeable, but extremely boring
TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!! This guy is a horrible teacher, his test are horribly written, and is absolutely useless. came ON THE AVERAGE 10min late, everyday; and would make you stay until he was finished. Seems to be a nice guy, but is a real jerk. Hides his political agenda under everything he explains in class. Don't bother taking him.
PLEASE TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR......HE DOES NOT COVER THE MATERIAL PROPERLY AND WHEN YOU COME TO HIM FOR EXTRA HELP HE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ANY HELP....CLASS IS PASSABLE IF YOU PAY ATTENTION AND TEACH YOURSELF SOME OF THE MATERIAL....TAKE ANOTHER PROF IF YOU CAN
That is what a professor is supposed to be. He made a hard topic like Economics extremely clear. He speaks understandable and grammatically correct English, something that is rare nowadays. I definitely recommend him if you want to understand basic Economics.
He is a good teacher...he jus doesnt go over everything in class so u have 2 read the text...he gives good notes...study hard and ull do fine...and hes very easy goingg & down to earth..
Goes into great detail for a tough subject like Economics History and also he's a nice guy. No HW with the exception of an article summary at the beginning of the semester but you still have to read a lot. Many of material on the tests are taken from notes (with some pulled from the textbook as well).
Overall - very poor professor. Take someone else if you can!
he is horrible. focuses, teaches and gives homework assignments based on equations throughout the entire course, but tests you on theory.
Dont take this professor.. dont even know where he pulls out his statistics for his tests but try not to take him!
One of my favorite professors and the perfect one for teaching economics. He makes Micro and Macro economics crystal clear and his tests clearly reflect whether or not you came to class and did the homework. Very liberal professor too and totally non-corporate. He doesn't give projects so just be ready for the tests.
very boring. no real homework. test are kinda hard. grades hard on the essay questions, but he does give everyone a few free points just incase you feel you should have gotten more. i wouldnt enjoy taking him again all that much.
He's probably good to take if you're interested in economics.. If not don't take him! Too confusing and when you ask to explain it only gets worse. HARD TESTS. No homework though, or barely any. Not sure if you need to pay attention or read the book - don't even know how I pulled off a B-
He makes hard topics even harder...
He does make topics harder than they need to be. His tests are long and can be hard as well, because he tests you on things you don't think are important. I got a B on the midterm only because I used Google/the textbook
Very hard grader on tests. 3 total including midterm & final. He's very clear but gets frustrated if you don't understand after he explains. Textbook not mandatory if you attend every class
Very difficult tests. Not a lot of homework. Attendance isn't really mandatory and class is sometimes boring but definitely go it's the best way to make sure you know everything. Overall I'd recommend him but his class does take some work.
VERY hard course. Not because of the material/dullness of the class, but his tests are really difficult. He tests you on the little things, rather than the bigger picture. He doesn't give much homework & doesnt offer extra credit so if you aren't doing well on the exams you're screwed. Honestly wouldn't take again.
hes pretty rude and the class is really hard i studied for hours and went into the test thinking i was going to get an A but his questions dont make sense and a lot are not covered in class i got a C+ on both tests but he must curve since my final grade was a B. if ur in micro he constantly tells the class that he hates teaching it
Dr. Mongiovi…what to say. He's a nice guy and tries to make things as clear as possible, though his exams are very difficult. The class was continuously doing bad on his exams (class avg = 50's-60's). However, he gives a somewhat decent curve on them. The drawback is he has a big D-range (50-64), so you need 70+ on his exams to get a decent grade.
Textbook not necessary BUT i would recommend coming to every class and taking notes. If you're not a good notetaker DON'T TAKE HIM. He lectures for the entire class and tests are only from lecture. No homework and 3 tests for the semester. The entire grade is from tests so study!
Has an hour and a half lecture that he uses about 3 slides for. Rambles off about pretty much anything economics related. Gives 3 tests so when you bomb the first one, its insanely hard to recover. Don't recommend him at all.
You need to go to every class! He lectures the entire time and is very enthusiastic about the subject. He gives two test and a final. If you pay attention and study you should do good.
Deff my fav econ professor. He's very good at teaching and explaining topics clearly. He makes understanding a hard topic easier. The class had 2 exams, a Final, and few homeworks. The exams can be a little hard but if you take notes you'll be fine. I suggest to learn all the graphs and formulas really well. Overall if you love economics take him.
Class may be dull but pay attention when he writes equations and when he goes over homework problems. There are only 3 tests that make up your grade so study hard but you can pass.
Professor Mongiovi definitely knows what he is talking about when it comes to economics. If you are unclear about something he will definitely give you a decent explanation on it. Classes are long and somewhat boring, only 2 tests and a final, and some homework, but it does help you out. I would probably take him again.
He's very knowledgeable on economics and pretty passionate about it. Class can get a little dull and you definitely need to take notes to pass the tests. You don't really need the book so much. I would recommend him for sure. 2 tests (midterm and final -- all essay questions) and some homework.
He's very knowledgeable. He's not the usual professor that only talks about what the curriculum tells you to teach, he puts in ideas that are outside the box and puts a very different perspective on economics. He is somewhat a tough grader but the does offer extra points on the test. I recommend going to every class and taking notes it will help.
Avoid at all costs. Worst professor I have ever had in SJU. Only take him if you want to work super hard only to receive 70.. Speaks in monotone and he acts like he hates his job and his life. Lectures go over time frame 80% of the time.
Would not take again. You have to be in every class writing notes down or you wont pass. He has a very boring and monotone voice. I could never stay awake. Hated this class so much. The material is interesting but he made the class terrible. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!!
Lectures are long and boring. You have to take notes from the power points and also get a note book to draw the charts. Great professor though, he will help you if you don't understand something, and he's there for you during office hours. definitely not an easy A.
Worst Microeconomics prof at SJU. All he talks about is how much he hates teaching this course. Lectures are incredibly long and boring. Goes over time 90% of the time. Only 3 exams that make up your entire grade and they're IMPOSSIBLE. I went to multiple office hours, tutoring and studied for hours and still finished with a bad grade. AVOID.
If you want to spend hours on the same topic, and if you want to hear a Professor swear every class, take him. He won't disappoint you. Bought the book with three hundred something dollars, and never used it, didn't even take a peek in class. Skip him if you can or you might as well just fall asleep at 1040 in the morning again.
overall the class was boring because all he did was lecture. He only gives 3 tests so make sure you study hard for them. Did not open the textbook once all semester so don't waste your time purchasing it, just study all of the notes he gives. Although he does not take attendance, you have to be in class to understand material or else you won't pass
I think he's a good macro teacher. Got a 68 on the first test then an 83 on the next. He cares about improvement and understanding of things. He doesn't curse that much and is always available to help from office hours and email. Very smart man and is clear on whats on the test. only 3 tests so you have to study. gives some hw. not impossible
Solid guy. Always offers help and makes things more clear when you ask. 3 tests that aren't that bad but you have to be in class to take notes. Do his homework because they help for exams.
Here's the thing, this guy literally disagrees with 90% of the stuff he teaches, and that just makes everything beyond confusing in class. Attendance not required, but after one missed class I was completely lost. You are supposed to have the book, but you should be able to survive with a tutor and extremely clear notes. 10/10 would NOT recommend.
3 tests based on class notes and homeworks. Lectures were boring but you should show up and take notes. Overall he is a nice professor and is willing to help if you ask.
Ok Dr. Gary is perhaps the only professor that I meet at St. Johns who actually loves what he teaches. He will answer every single question thoroughly until you understand it. Lectures were long but full of information. He motivates you to think beyond measures. He is your man if you really want to learn. Overall, totally recommended!
Monotone - easy to zone out - treats you like you are beneath him. Somewhat unprofessional - used profanity in class. Pay attention in class and it won't be difficult.
Mongiovi is one of the best professors at SJU. His class structure and PPTs are very well organized and he knows what he is talking about. Show up to class pay attention and you are guaranteed an A.
Just amazing I would highly recommend! Actually loves what he is teaching and is very on top of it. Homework assignments to help prepare you for tests, no surprises, fair grading, and you will actually learn so much and improve your way of thinking. Can feel like a lot of material but totally manageable. Take him!
Professor Mongiovi is one of the best professors in SJU!! I am so happy I took him this semester, he makes everything so clear, his homework prepare you really well for the exams. Would love to take him again!
Prof. Mongiovi is an average teacher. Has slide shows that you study from the most. 3 exams that are mostly based off of the homeworks and his notes. His class can get very boring as he has a monotone voice. Its not that hard of a class, its just hard to always pay attention. If you ask questions he will help to the best of his ability.
Prof. Mongiovi's lectures can be boring because he provides a lot of historical background but this helped me gain a better understanding of the material. When it comes to teaching the actual material, he does an ok job. For the homeworks and test review, I always got tutoring don't bother with the book. Your grade is based on 2 exams & the final.
Absolutely love Professor Mongiovi! Wish I could take him again
Mongiovi is the best for Macro, he really knows his stuff. He cares about participation but you can get an A by doing well just on your tests. Sends hw sometimes to help you get used to calculation methods. Willing to help people out in office hours. Recommends getting a textbook but its not a must. Prepare well for the tests and youll be good.
Literally never used the textbook. Show up to class and take notes. His tests aren't the easiest thing, they require studying. Took attendance in the beginning, then he just memorized our faces so he knew if we showed up. Quizzes were given but didn't count. Homework was simple, not much. Extremely boring lectures.
If you like communism, take him. He is obsessed with John Oliver and his propaganda. However, I respect other points of view. The problem with him is that your grade is based off three tests and participation can only slightly change your grade. The lectures are also extremely boring. I do give him credit for always answering questions though.
Gary isn't too bad but there are definitely easier professors in econ. He is boring and doesn't really care much about students. he picks some favorites so participate and you will be one of them (extra credit for participating too). two tests and a final, two quizzes that don't count, and two homeworks that count for effort. do not buy the book
Gary is honestly great. I do the bare minimum (read ppts, do the hws, study a little) and I got an A when I took him freshman year and I have an A as im taking him now. Ask some questions sometimes so he knows your name. Take some notes sometimes. Quizlet definitely helps. Don't buy the book. He rants sometimes so I just watch tv on my cpu.
Mongiovi may seem a little intimidating at first but very helpful. I started the class off with a 53 on my first exam but after going to tutoring and talking to him, my grades went up to high 80s on the tests. He adjusts your final grade if he see's you working hard and improving. He doesn't give extra credit. overall, great experience. Take him!
I have actually already rated this professor, however I am coming back to state that he really drilled the info into our heads. Some eco profs are way easier but Gary actually made me learn and it has made my future classes so easy. Take him
Gary could have been better but if you get him it's okay. Self studying will help a lot after his classes. The tests aren't too bad but you study enough it's not that hard.
Boring- every class is a powerpoint and letcure, 2 tests and a final. 2 quizzes and hw that does NOT count. He makes the material more complicated. He does answer questions if you have any but just makes it more complicated. I thought he was rude to the students but he prob meant well. Teach yourself, study for tests and u will do okay.
Soo i was skeptical about taking this class but it was not as difficult as I thought. He really cares about his students if you just go to class and pay attention and ask questions hell see that you actually want to learn. Only counts the midterm and finals but if you do the HW its show that you are trying and would bring your grade up.
Monjovi isnt horrible, he does make economics hard to understand though for new freshman who probably have no idea what economics means. The textbook is online dont buy it. To be honest I dont recommend at all. When you ask questions make sure there thought out questions or else hell make you wish you never asked.
midterm, midterm and a final that's all your grade is based on and a little participation. if you have the option take someone else or drop the class. if you get stuck with this guy I think you can manage passing with a B if you study smart. Economics is a hard class to teach in general
Avoid taking class at all costs. Very boring teacher and very monotone. Only grades on two tests and a final, homework and quizzes don't count. He does not really care about you as a student and you most likely won't do well.
Gary is a very boring lecturer who only grades based on exams and attendance. He is not a very good teacher and puts random questions on exams. His reviews do not prepare you exams at all, I do not recommend.
He is not as bad as everyone here makes him out to be. Yes, you have to pay attention, take notes, and put effort into the class. If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you. But, it is also not the hardest class there is. Make sure you ask questions and go to his office hours. He wants you to ask him if you are having trouble!!
Class could be boring at times, you could use your phone and get away with it. If you listen to his lectures, you will learn something though. He does an okay job at explaining, but may sometimes spend long amounts of times on math questions. Grade consists of 2 Exams during semester and a final. Study a little bit here and your fine.
this guy is the most boring monotone person ive ever met. all he does is talk doesnt ingage anyone in the class. he never reviews and everything is based on his tests. he makes 4 different versions so its impossible to cheat. wont help you raise your grade at all
He is a hard professor. I tried my hardest in the class and did my best in the class he did not care. He only cares about the people who ask questions. If you do not participate GOODLUCK in this class. Do not take!
A great choice. Optional homework and quizzes which can boost your participation grade. Fair 2 midterms and 1 final exam.
He's fine, just kind of monotone which makes it harder to keep attention in class. If you ask questions he notices you more and sees you as a good student. Material isn't hard, it's in the pwrpnts, but he takes long to get to the point and takes even longer to explain math problems. I didn't mind him but he wouldn't be my first choice.
He wasnt my worst Econ professor but he definitely wasnt the best. He talks a lot about random stuff in the economy and he gives some good definitions but near the end of the course I was lost, hes not the worst if you have him bc he does give homework quizzes and tests which is good for ur grades but it was very hard to pay attention to him.
The class itself isn't difficult and by all means, I've had worse teachers. Though he tends to ramble during lectures and they are boring and slow-paced. If you read the material and try your best to follow along during the powerpoints you should be able to do fine. If you can avoid the class with him I would especially since economics isn't easy
Incoming freshman, I wanted to take some time and tell you guys... good luck if you have him.
He was late to class at least once a week and would teach when class is over. 1 required book, but he never used it. There are 4 homework assignments, 2 quizzes (one of them a pop quiz), and a timed final exam with at least 12 tedious math problems. Especially during a pandemic, he should be more considerate towards his students. I do not recommend
In the midst of a pandemic, Prof. Monigivoi taught this class as a hybrid. It seemed that his effort and focus went to the In-Person students. There are few grades that your overall is based on. Roughly 3 tests 3 HW. Very boring and left themed lectures . . . . .
this class is like slow torture
Avoid teacher at all costs
Just show up, do the HW & Assignments, and you'll do fine. If you just study the PPT slides and the HW questions, you'll do fine on the test. Just do the work
Solid choice overall. If you have even a decent work ethic and take some time to look at the slides, you will do good. He has 3 tests all of which are STRONGLY based off the power point. He also curves heavy since a lot of people don't study for the test.
Professor Mongiovi is the best professor I've had at this school. If you genuinely care about economics, you will love his class. The work can be challenging but not impossible.
Skip him
Drop transfer into another class
This guy made me change my major from business to criminal justice. Terrible lectures will ramble about the most random things. He has favorites, so make sure you ask questions or you won't be one of them. He gives two quizzes and homeworks that don't count to your grade, but count for participation. Please I beg you don't take this guy, he's awful
not good just don't take him.period
dont do it
Some of these comments really show who knows how to study and who doesn't. I've had this guy twice now. Tests are basically PowerPoint. Didn't pay attention throughout the semester studied two days before the test, and got an easy A. Easy class if you put in the work. He is very opinionated though, but that doesn't matter IMO
VERY boring so I suggest getting coffee beforehand lol. He didn't take attendance and he's not very engaging so depending on your learning style, you might be better off just teaching yourself with the book and slideshows. Few homeworks and they're helpful for studying. His test grading system is pretty generous, just make sure you read.
DO NOT TAKE HIM AS A PROFESSOR! He gives too many assignments. Every time you ask him a question he will not answer properly. Attendance is mandatory. Class is very boring. Final was insanely difficult. His regular exams are impossible. Each person in the row has different exams so beware. Does NOT accept late work at all. Gary is just very rude
Tough professor to have especially for your first semester as a freshman. Conversations can get one sided on the political spectrum. One of those professors who intentionally makes things harder for the students than it has to be.
if you can avoid taking him, avoid him. he provides no extra credit, his test are extremely difficult, homework took me hours to complete. all he does is talk. makes economics extremely difficult. never take him 0/10
When I took a course taught by Professor Mongiovi at NSSR, he was fun and engaging to listen to. He set aside lots of time outside class to discuss any questions I had. All around, he is a polite and caring person with a clear desire to help students succeed. Would highly recommend.
Well if you're a first year I just took him. it was kinda hard and he's very vague when he answers questions. However I learned more and more overtime and improved in the class so It wasn't that bad towards the end, but definitely rough the first month or two. If you participate and show improvement he might even bump your grade up he did for me.
The most boring professor ever. Just avoid him at all cost!!!!!! He will make you rethink life
Chill guy, If you participate he will bump your grade. The tests are pretty easy just review the power points he shares and ask for specific slide numbers because he likes to stop mid lesson. Free textbook was provided online and the homework seems complicated but if you attempt it and read its not too bad and he drops the lowest quiz/hw ps:3 tests
Professor can be dry, but the material isn't too difficult if you stay on top of the readings and actively participate. Unstuckstudy was a big help for study prep - definitely consider using it alongside the textbook.
He puts the bare minimum effort into his job. Monotone, boring, confusing lectures. He often rambles about politics instead of teaching. He always came in late and let us out early - we only finished 5/6 topics becuz of ts. Easy to pass if you self study. He took attendance twice and than stopped. He could be a great prof if he gave more effort.
Spends a lot of time talking about how he hates teaching microeconomics and basically disagrees with most of the stuff. When he was actually teaching, he did an ok job explaining the stuff. I would say take someone better, but he's probably one of the better prof. considering some of the other reviews for 1302 profs. I've seen
He collects back all the tests at the end of the semester. I couldn't find mine and he crashed out at me and was being really aggressive. It's not my fault he doesn't want to make new test questions and do his job. Very few assignments but at what cost!
Pick anyone else. His class is only graded by a few things. The homework assignments take forever. He's really passive aggressive and gets mad when people don't ask questions. He lectures the entire time and is not engaging at all.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! His tests include the most random questions that you will never need to know. He has even admitted the questions that he uses on his tests are random. If you really care about your grade DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Anyone else will be better than this. Gets mad when people do not participate and always talking about politcs.
Tests were impossible even after studying notes He was kinda passive aggressive and had favorites Homework was impossible and took hours Good luck lol
Gary Mongiovi is a dedicated, passionate professor and brings a unique perspective to the topics he teaches. He teaches and has a clear passion for subjects of Marxian economics and other classes like Macroeconomic theory as well as first year classes. Exams are fair but not easy.
Lecture heavy...like HEAVY. If you don't participate brodie is not gonna like you so you gotta raise that hand often. He literally said that his criteria for grading participation at the end of the semester is if he can put a face to the name so make sure he knows your face. Pretty fair grader imo but is a little tough. For tests it's a lot of info
