Great teacher. He's got his schedule and actually sticks to it. Very clear and helpful. You should be able to pull a 4.0 if you work hard.
Take English from Gary Parks!
Take his class!!! I can't say enough good things about this instructor. The quality of his instruction is SO FAR above average. Gary Parks puts other teachers to shame…it is too bad he is teaching at such a low quality school.
Love this guy!!! He made writing a blast, and he didn't grade hard at all because he didnt want to be critical of anyone's creativity (go fiction!). Take his class if you get the chance, even though he'd on sebatical in ireland this year. keep him in mind for next year. he really helps you get ur creativity out on the page.
really good teacher! easy grader, and really flexible with due dates. likes to see people succeed!! Take his classes theyre easy and fun!!!
Gary Parks is the****! He's such a cool teacher and extremely friendly to everyone. Short Story writing was one of my favorite classes ever and most of it is because of Gary! He let us have a pizza party one day (to bid farewell to a student teacher) and sometimes he hangs out with the students during break. He is laid back, yet I learned a ton!
I took this course online. It was super demanding and I felt like it was more about following anal-y detailed directions than learning. I wouldn't recommend the class online.
Easiest 4.0 I have ever gotten, or could imagine getting in a college level course. The class is geared for international students with bad english reading, listening, writing skills so the standards are extremely low. This is class is such a joke it shoulndt even be allowed
He's really good in English especially in writing! He gave good explanations for the assignments!
Very awesome and well rounded good teacher
Gary is very reasonable and always willing to help. He is flexible with deadlines as long as you follow his directions in the syllabus. As long as you put in effort and complete all the assignments according to Gary's guidelines, you're guaranteed an A.
One of the most reasonable and nicest teachers at SCC.
Online he is not very personable or helpful. Felt like it was a read and regurgitate class you needed to check online all the time. If you had problems, he'd answer with a sentence or two and then send you for tutoring. Seemed like he enjoyed barking orders on the announcements more than actually teaching.
i would say that he teaches ok in class, but when you have question, and you want him to help. is pretty much like mission impossible. he will explain, but wasn't clear at all. think before you register for his class.
Gary is a great teacher. For students to be successful in his class you should probably have your act together. He makes it easy to learn the material, as the topics and reading are very relevant and engaging. Students need to be disciplined and be able to manage their time well in order to succeed. Very knowledgeable and helpful teacher.
Gary's class was well structured and easy to follow. Definetly a bit of work, but as long as you keep up, 4.0 isnt too much of a stretch. Not sure what the bashers are talking about, I showed up everyday, did the work and came out with a 4.0...Definetly would recommend
I am thoroughly enjoying Gary's class online - he's very helpful and accessible for face to face assistance if needed. His directions are clear and consistent - the topic is very interesting and I'm learning a ton. I'd highly recommend taking his course!
I loved the fact that we got to revise the essay we wrote in the class, what I didn't like was that it was worth HALF of our grade. I came out with a 4.0 but that didn't stop the anxiety I felt over one essay. Overall, easy teacher. He confused me a lot when it came to citations, but when i emailed him he was extremely helpful. Caring, good, easy.
Excellent professor. He is super caring, helpful, and is willing to do whatever it takes to help you succeed. Many people who complain about him did not make the effort to go see him in office and do the homework assignments.I would definitely take a class with him again!
very helpful and really care about his students. Effort is needed but he's also a fair grader.
Excellent teacher! Only assigns one essay which will be due at the end of the quarter. Prepares you from the beginning. Always ready to help you after class. He's very clear with his directions. He makes it easier than Eng 101. You can miss 50points and still get 4.0 &offers a lot extra credit. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this teacher. You wont regret it!(:
If you take his class online you have a really good chance of getting a 4.0 should you put in the effort. I got a 4.0 in his online class despite being sick because I could still get work done. When I got ill and missed class in person there was no hope and I had to withdraw. If anyone gets sick in winter, only take online with Gary Parks.
I'm taking his hybrid class. Although his announcements are kind of confusing; still, he's very willing to help us with our questions. In addition, he only gives out one major essay in the end and the rest is just discussions throughout the course.
Well organized class! Most of all,I really appreciated his genuine concern of the student's wellbeing. Professor Gary Parks introduced us to community volunteer and engagement. Our class partnered up with the GVOA. This class is more than just an English class, you learn to give and understand your community through outreach and volunteer. Wonderful!
This class helped me dust of my writing & research skills after a few years out of school. The assignments are broken down nicely & you are provided with very detailed directions. Grading is fair to generous. My only negative about this class would be too many very detailed announcements which can be hard to keep up with & time consuming.
At his core he is an efficient English teacher but there are some caveats. First off his English 102 class is all about Food Politics and his main textbook is a ridiculous affair called "Stuffed and Starved" It's a poorly done book about an interesting topic that you have to use for your research paper. Also tons of work. Hard work will earn an A.
He has way too many things going on in the class at once. It was hard to keep up because we were reading 2 books doing a community project and working on an 8 page research essay all at once. He is nice and tries to help if you need but the course is hard and boring. The whole Eng 102 class is about food justice.
For an online class, I did not expect to have to sacrifice so much of my time to his assignments. He has too many things going on at once, and it's difficult to keep up with assignments. I don't recommend taking his online class if you don't want to be dedicating your life to the class to meet his requirements.
He is not an easy teacher. Everything is very complicated, most of your time will be spend reading his mile long assignments and then trying to figure out where the next one is because he never just tells you anything, you have to figure out everything by yourself. Do not take him.
I took this class online and had been feeling like it's a 10 credits course throughout the quarter:( WAY TOO MUCH WORKS!!
Gary didn't give up on me. He gave me every opportunity to get through this class and he is an excellent teacher.
I really enjoyed this class. Gary is a fantastic teacher and motivator. The course is open and there is really a sense of community. It was a very positive experience.
He is a wonderful teacher!
He is one of the nicest and most helpful teachers ever! Thats all I gotta say. He is amazing and very nice!
I would recommend Mr Parks for all of you guys. English is my second language, so I am not good at writing essays. However, Mr Parks did not give up on me. He also gave good feedbacks. After taking this class, my english is better than before.
Very particular with what he's looking for when grading. AMAZING at one on one time. Once was a tutor and is really accommodating at fitting you into his schedule if you need help with an essay or have questions. Has multiple extra credit options. HYBRID: Prefers students turn things in/post on discussions early before due date.
The best teacher ever! Homework and online discussion are easy stuff. We just only get two out of class essays and two in class essay. For In class essay, you get chance to revise it. LOT OF EXTRA CREDITS! Find him during his office hour, you will get a lot of good feedback.
Very good teacher. He doesn't give up on his students and he is really helpful both in-class and during his office hours. You will always get super good feedbacks from him. If you work hard and do everything the best as you can, you will get a 4.0 and you will actually learn in this class. One of my favorite professors in Shoreline CC.

He's not explicit with his assignments and he seems to get confused by student's work. He will give a bad grade based on expectations he never told you about and is just generally harsh with his grading for bad reasons. You can't miss class or else you will fail and he won't tell you about upcoming assignments, you have to know everything yourself.
Gary is the sweetest guy ever, honestly. If you just show up, do your work, and be respectful in class- you've got an easy A. Poor guy had to deal with a lot of disruptions and lower level learning (split level class). He's pretty disorganized, but he really does have one of the most kind hearts on campus.
He was nice to me when I had him for english 090 and I passed his class at the first quarter, but when I took his class again for 101 it didn't work well and he didn't show us how to the mla which I didn't pass the class. I came to his office hours and he explained it to me but wasn't clear. My advice for anyone to take this course, don't take him.
I don't enjoy having him as a teacher because he understands he's not being harsh he's trying to teach his students to be better but when it comes to assignments, he wants his students to do it his own style because other students get confused by his own style of work and he gets confused. He gives them a bad grade for not doing those things.
I had him as a sub for two weeks and it was possibly my worst college experience yet. He never seemed to know what was going on, he went on ridiculous tangents about random details, he never explained the assignment and he wasted excessive amounts of time on things that were completely irrelevant. I had to learn everything myself outside of class.
Not only does he has the skills and knowledge of the subject he is an amazing professor who inspires to learn more every single class.
Excellent professor always ready to help the best instructor I ever had.
Wonderful professor! Yes, he is a bit scattered but he does a fantastic job teaching. He sets clear expectations which made the essays a breeze. If something is unclear he is more than willing to meet with you one-on-one during office hours. His feedback is great! I highly recommend taking his courses.
It's important for him that his students participate in class. He gives you a lot of time to finish homework and still has credit for it.
Gary was an amazing and caring teacher. He gave many opportunities to improve your work and earn extra credit. He was very approachable and I look forward to taking another class with him!
He's happy to help students improve their papers before they turn them in. Deadlines are very loose and he gives you more time if you need it. Take good notes in class because sometimes you can use them for extra credit! The readings were interesting. It's a pretty easy and enjoyable class.
Gary is a great instructor. He often gives extensions for the due day of important assignments. He gives good feedback that can really help to improve your essay and your assignment grades. You should read the essays he assigned for in-class discussion. Also, he stays connected with students very well through email and Canvas. Follow Instructions.
The best Eng101 class ever ! Thought the class is boring as every English class does. He is an easy grader, he will give u full mark for your essays. Pop quizzes are heavy, remember to show up to class. One extra week delay for every homework which is really nice! If u want to get a good grade for Eng100, this one is your best choice!!
In order to pass this class online you must be willing to check canvas every day around 9pm to be notified of homework that might be due the next day. Overall easy grader and gives relatively good feedback. Just wishes he had a better syllabus.
He is very kind responds quickly to messages. Lets you get things done early. Easily enjoyable readings. Has a week-long grace period for homework and he is very flexible No tests!!
Gary is the best Prof. who I know. Not too much writing homework some interesting reading assignments. He gives you so many chance to revise your essay and provided great feedback which is really help. Highly recommend.
Professor Gary Parks is a really great teacher. He is willing to give feedback on your essays and help his students improve their writing abilities. Definitely recommend taking his class!
The class was many short readings, a handful of discussions and small assignments, 2 timed writings, and two short/medium length papers. The readings were easy and moderately enjoyable, and the essays were not long or impossible. Parks is also very understanding and has a 7 day grace period for most assignments. An appropriate ENGL101 level class
Honestly I’m conflicted on how I feel about Professor Park. The class overall is easy and fun if you like and understand poetry, but Pro Park to me lacks any enthusiasm. He’s nice and civil but that’s it. Tho does try to message students reminders about assignments if you haven’t turned them in. Overall he’s a solid choice…
Mr. Parks is one of the few professors who truly cares about his students. With fun group activities and interesting articles, it is a class you can enjoy learning. If you work hard on every assignment and do your due diligence on reading, you will get your deserved grade. I highly recommend Mr. Parks!
He replies to inbox very quickly with much effort and details, and he has seven day grace period for most of the assignments (without score deduction). The quizzes are very easy, and you're gonna be okay if you speed-read the passages. There are not many assignments too. He's quite objective, but I'd recommend choosing topics wisely.
(Poetry I Eng 271 was missing in menu select). Prof Parks uses a textbook, & web-based materials. His assignments are clear and concise, and are quite flexible with wide-range of styles students can choose to work within. He is incredibly insightful, caring, and passionate about course materials. Swiftly responds. I'm looking forward to Poetry II!
I really was so excited for this class. However the way Gary Parks organizes assignments has been extremely confusing and I am now getting by in a class I had expected to be excelling. The way he structures assignments is very hard to keep track of and there is no pattern to follow. Very unorganized. He is not helpful about it either.
For almost every single assignment there was a 7 day period where you could turn things in late with no penalty. He was willing to give extensions past that if you had a good reason as well. The essays were worth a lot of your grade, but the topics were very straight forward and open, and only around 1k words per essay. Great teacher
Homework is always laid out ahead of time so you know exactly what is expected of you and when. 7 day grace period on almost all (if not all) assignments. Lectures can feel a bit slow sometimes, but the prof has clear expectations and gives good feedback for all written assignments. Very accessible outside of class and generous with extensions.
His class was very enjoyable. Every assignment he gives you a 7 day grace period to turn it in where you don't lose points. He is accommodating to circumstances that may require late work. His Canvas set up didn't work for my brain, and it's not the most organized, but he gives many reminders for things and when they r due. Quizzes r simple too.
I just finished my online class with Gary Parks. This class was EXTREMELY organized. I have never had a professor so organized and I have taken many classes in my life. The essays we read and topics were very interesting and relevant to today's hot topics. I highly recommend Gary if you need to take English 101.
Would highly recommend Professor Gary. The class is interesting,he cares and supports his students well, there is a lot to learn.
Amazing teacher. If you are looking to get an English credit he should be your proffesor!!
His class was easy, Come to class because he talked alot about assignments and how to do them and he had quizzes on the books we had to read that week at the beginning of classes. He's good at emailing you back. politics are in discussions/example questions a lot. I kinda felt like I was in a political/history class instead of an English class.
Hands down the best English teacher I've ever had. His class was very enjoyable and easy to cruise through. He actually interacts with you and gives great feedback. Overall 10/10 class and would take it again. If you're a running start student or new to college would recommend it.
Gary is reasonable; he won't put you under pressure. even in this assignment-loaded summer quarter. He gives great feedback on assignments and grades promptly and gives you the opportunity to revise the one that grades heavily, as well as a grace period. Take his class, and you won't regret it!
This was my first English class as a college student and I was really worried that I wouldn't be able to do well. Professor Gary Parks really made writing easier to learn and gave great feedback after every assignment. He would respond quickly to questions outside of class as well.
Great first professor as someone who had never taken a college class previously. Anytime I lost points he made sure to make it clear why I had lost them making it very easy to improve from his feedback. Workload also isn't very heavy compared to other English 101 classes but it is graded tougher.
He's very reasonable, you'll do well if you submit your assignments. Gives 7day grace pd. For 100% for every assignment, even the 2 major essays!
Mr.Parks is really kind. He's an easy grader, as long as you follow the assignment guidelines and aren't vague in your writings you're almost guaranteed an A. In my class there was only 2 major essays and a short essay that wasn't difficult, along with some discussion posts, readings and quizzes. He's also very flexible with due dates.
Good teacher. You can tell he really cares about his students learning how to write well. Kind of over-the-top about reminding students his policy about AI usage. Just don't use it and you'll be fine. I thought quizes were kind of hard. You have 2 timed writings, 2 big essays, and some quizzes. Would take again.
I took poetry with him. One can easily understand his passion for English and poetry. He gives you freedom to write and appreciates your work too. It was a light class, and I really enjoyed doing creative work with my peers and him. I would 100% recommend him.
O/A. Not a lot of assignments but you're going to read a lot so don't fall behind. Read all assigned reading to understand assignments. Aim for an A on the the first short timed writing test because he will let you skip the second & give you the grade you got for the first. He extends deadlines but start papers as soon as they're assigned.
This is a terrible teacher. The assignments are confusing and not explained in the modules like other teachers. The worst thing is when the work is too good, they say that using AI to help is not reasonable.
He's a very kind professor who clearly puts a lot of effort into his teaching. He's passionate about the material and genuinely wants all of his students to succeed. I would definitely take any other English class offered by him. There were two major essays and a few online discussions, nothing insane, as long as you keep up everything is doable.
All around great guy. I was in ENG 99. 99 and 101 were combined and had the same matieral.
Great to reach out to outside of class for advice. Instructions, grading, and feedback are pretty straightforward and helpful. W
Such a good professor, class will be SO easy if you do the work on time and check up on the canvas (even just 1/week). 2 essays, 3 ish quizzes, 4 ish discussions, and that's it for the quarter. Honestly is as time-consuming as you make it, if you read every single thing assigned or only what is required to know for quizzes (10 questions, 30 points)
He's a nice guy and very passionate about teaching. The workload overall is fine, just be eager to learn, then you will be fine. He has participation quiz, but it was not that hard, just read through it prior. About 2 major essays, he will give you chances to make adjustments. Overall, he's great and I'll take him again. fix my
