I learned a lot in this class, my fear of public speaking is pretty much gone.
awesome proff. actually cares about students. learned stuff other than just speech.
Good guy - vague on his assignments, because he wants you to THINK, but is flexible with what you turn in, as long as you put thought into it. Great teacher
Good professor. As long as you follow the directions you will do fine.
he's very funny. also he's very easy on grading.
very nice teacher, made my fear of speaking seem not soo bad, highly recommend him
very intriguing
I highly recommend taking his class. He offers extra credit so you always have a chance to get an A, even in honors. I learned so much, and I was able to apply the skills I learned in his class to my everyday life and other subjects as well.
great techer. knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

really nice teacher, funny and interesting class, not that hard as you thought, especially easier during summer.
his class takes some work. he is very interesting and wants people to do well. extra credit is offered, but i never used it. just give him what he wants and you do very well. lectures are very good and some times funny. take this class.
Rybold is a excellent teacher. He doesn't like slackers and offers lots a xtra credit. Funny, and is very understanding if you are scared of talking in front of people. Makes it easy and fun. Highly recommended.
5 speeches due: 3 speeches super easy. 2 speeches research reqd. but still easy. Just do what he tells you, and you'll get an A. Very much lecture based. Lots of extra credit. You'll learn a lot. He's professional, nice, and fair. Not really public speaking, because classmates become your friends.
He is an awsome teacher. You learn a lot of great techniques to give speeches. You have to go to class, and not be more than 10 minutes late, if not he will write you down and deduct points from your grade. But he is a great teacher, he is funny, and his lectures are not boring.
I was terrified to take a speech class. I still am terrified to speak infront of a room, but he tried to make it fun and less stresful for everyone. Just try hard and do not miss a class. He knows how scared you are to be in that class. He is funny and cool...
I was terrified of having to take this class and speak in front of people. He makes it fun and easy. The class was really interesting and even taught helpful hints for composing papers.
A great teacher. Fun, smart, helpful. One warning: Gets moody if too many students show up unprepared. Just do your work, don't give him any lame excuses and you'll get an A. Easy class for the most part.
Very good class for such a painful subject. Has a great sense of humor if you like his jokes which kept me awake. Only 1 test and very little homework. The last half of the speeches require decent research, but if u put forth the effort, an easy A. Lots of extra credit! He doesn't like slackers or excuses, but i enjoyed learning from him.
nice teacher. ok class. easy B if you dont really care. can be a easy A with some work but over all easy B not a lot of work for it. Took over summer only one test.
Cool Class, Very Funny Professor . Here is how he grades. If your Asian =A, B=Brown Skin ,C=Caucasian, D= From the Desert Community . If you can barley speek english you'll get an A
i'm an international student but got an A. don't go over time and you'll be fine. but i hated his mean comments!! :(
what a joke.
funny guy with funny stories. i was late everyday and one time for a speech i did a visual presentation in 30 seconds before class. it was****ty but i still got an A. thats how easy it was.
Just follow his directions on the speeches, he explains in detail what he expects. Be able to take some criticism; everyone fills out comment sheets for every speech. This guy loves China. Class was pretty enjoyable, not too painful. Exam was on stuff from the book and the key points of his lectures.
Gary kicks ass. He really is a great teacher who prepares you as well as anyone could for what most people are scared to death of - public speaking. Clear lectures, funny, loves fishing and China.
Gary makes it well known what he expects in your speech. If you follow the steps, you'll get a good grade.
i enjoyed the class and i was frickin TERRIFIED to get up in front of other people and speak. just keep up with your speech topics, deliver them ON TIME, and you'll get an A. he gave me a B+ i think just to show how i could've gotten an A if i just gave a little more effort and didn't my speeches late. fair teacher and very entertaining!!
No need to load up on coffee before one of Professor Rybolds lectures. He is entertaining, has a great sense of humor. Do your speeches on time, be prepared and you will get a good grade. Can be moody, but that never lasts. A fair teacher!

Professor Rybold is a good teacher. class is fun, he is fair and definately prepares you for your speeches.
boring lectures, freezing classroom, great sence of humor, loves china, leniant, moody. COLD CLASS, make sure to bring a sweater. except for the jokes his lectures are pretty boring.
hes white, pretty cool i guess. smart, scary whnemad.
he makes class interesting. lets you know what he wants on the speeches and very generous if u make an effort. I learned a lot from this class over summer.
this class helps improve ur public speaking skill a lot, he's a great teacher, definitely recommend it EVEN IF u dont need it for GE but just to improve ur skill. dont delay ur speech coz once u choose to do it it's gonna pull u down.
Gray is an awesome professor. Come to class on time and do the assignments, try not to miss class. He makes the class very interesting. You can do well, if you put the effort in. He is completely fair and very clear in his expectations.
Gary is a good teacher. Does anybody want to purchase "The art of Public Speaking" Lucas? The book store is selling for $62. I'll sell for a reasonable price. contact for more info.
this is an easy A as long as you dont let them pressure u into doing more work than necessary. all you have to do is attend 3 events (even if you just go without any training and suck) you will get the full credit. plus it's transferable. careful tho bc they will try and get u to do way more than what is required for the A and they talk a lot.
just do what he says and you'll get an A. he sets a comfortable atmosphere for the class and makes it easy to give your speeches. he gives you plenty of time to prepare for them. there are 5 total. the first three are EXTREMELY easy and the last 2 are a little more dificult. he is interesting and enertaining though.
changes requirements on projects last minute. doesn't stick to syllabus. easy to understand verbally but since he doesn't keep to his word, its not worth very much. take him only if you have to. otherwise, run!
GREAT CLASS GREAT TEACHER
He's a nice professor, its a good class, but the 8 week course is realllly fast, like a speech a week, so not very good if you aren't already decent at public speaking.
I really didn't like this professor. He was always changing the assignments and I was always left confused. Overall I didn't enjoy this class, I would recommend a different professor.
Gary is probably one of the best teachers at IVC. His classes are very interesting, he really cares about his students, and he's very genuine. He cares about feedback, and how he can make things better, and he makes sure you're comfortable. Speeches are given in small groups, which makes the stress level much lower! I would highly recommend him!
He will give you a heads up even on the first day of class, that we will start off slow and then eventually the last 2-3 weeks of the semester will be like a roller coaster ride. Basically, you will be doing a speech like everyday for the last 2-3 weeks of the semester. Lots of group speeches,But, you'll never do a speech infront of the whole class
I hated speech when I first started his class, but afterwards it has become one of my favorite classes thanks to Gary! We give about 12-15 speeches to a small group and then do one test out speech in front of the teacher. There are some in class essays, but they are open book/notes! I highly recommend taking Gary?s class!
I HATE Speech, but really this class wasnt that bad, a little fast paced during the summer, but not bad. lecture for the first half of the semester, and then speeches for the rest. Only one speech is graded, and if you dont get over an 85 on your first shot he pretends it never happened. He just wants you to learn the skill, not recieve a grade
His lectures are good and he's good at teaching, but he's really unapproachable and condescending if you have questions after class. He just looks at you like he has better things to do with his time than help his students.
Great Professor, class forces you to be good at public speaking, which is the purpose right? A lot more work than I thought would be required for speech but getting a good grade is not hard. Most will get B or A. He is the debate team coach, he will make you good at speeches. (you never have to speak in front of class for speeches just in groups)
He told us at the very beginning that he would help us with our anxiety of speaking. Does he follow through? Of course not. Instead he made fun of my anxiety disorder in front of the class and used me as an example. If you can try to avoid his class because he gives vague information about hw, and what you need to do to for speeches.
I took his summer class very fast pace, lots of work but worthwhile. HE IS 1 OF D BEST PROF. I've ever had. VERY ENTHUSTIASTIC, made class interesting. This class is only 4 competent people that accepts challenges- it's a critical thinking public speaking class kinda like taking an Eng. class except u write & talk about wat u wrote. He is a great m
he likes to pick his favorites during the first week. he loves it if you suck up to him and make random conversations. he tells you that speech is nothing like writing but he lied, just wait until you see the format he wants you to follow. he makes you feel uncomfortable sometimes by using you as an example. he's easy, just a jerk sometimes.
you have to give ten speeches and for some people, you have to give more than that. he definitely has favorites. he is not always very clear. i don't know how he does his grading of your final speech, but it makes absolutely no sense. people were reading their whole speech and they got higher grades than people who rarely looked at their notecard.
Gary is hilarious! I took this during summer so it was really fast paced. We had to do 10 speeches, but they are in front of a small group. You do your final speech in front of him and a few others. I actually looked forward to going to class. I have always been nervous speaking in front of people and after this class I am a lot more confident
Gary was my favorite teacher ever. I hate public speaking but he made it fun and not overwhelming. None of your speeches are in front of an ENTIRE class, they're in front of small groups of about 6 and the final is the only speech you give in front of him. He's fun and teaches you how to be prepared for a speech. Not an easy A but a fun class (:
Had him for summer. 10 speeches total all in small groups. Never in front of whole class. This helped me because I am always nervous and have anxiety build ups. He was always professional. Took other teachers before, but had dropped because they were too intimidating. Garys Great!!!!
I now LOVE speech thanks to Gary! He is one of the best teachers I have had at IVC. We do about 11-14 speeches in small groups then a test out speech in front of him and a few other students. There is some homework and an in class essay but its open book. If you don?t like public speaking, this class will help you over come your fears.

Plays favorites, snappy, arrogant. Very happy to hear he is leaving not only the school but the country.
Taking speech was an obstacle for me. I fear it so much. I dropped it twice because the anxiety and nervousness got to me. Finally I took it with Gary because I heard you do all your speeches in small groups of 4 or 5, never infront of whole class. That helped alot. Plus I took it with a friend.
Hardest class i have ever took! Tho for a speech class it was nice to speak infront of only a small group it was extremely hard to memorize a 10 min long speech about healthcare. Very fun class tho we all got along great and became a class family. He gives easy A's but makes it sound like your going to fail if you dont do better... great teacher
He obviously selects his favorites. If he would leave the rest along, it wouldn't be as bad, but if you fall into the 'unfavored' basket, he'll really work it against you in the meanest and pettiest way you'd ever imagine possible coming from a professor!
He is a very hard working teacher that does his best to make sure you learn. His class consist of a lot of work. He doesn't like to fail students though. If you fail his class, you just plain suck basically.
Gary is not a teacher, he is the COACH!!! He is THE BEST professor I have ever meet.
Gary is our coach! Gary has been instrumental in improving my debate techniques.
This class is very hard, if youre not into public speaking on a weekly basis. The good side is that he doesnt make you speak in front of the entire class. When you test out, you get into small groups, and critiques from other students. Cons, you have to write two speeches every week and 11-12 speeches to pass the class.
Because of his status Gary Rybold feels that it is safe to verbally abuse his students. Very arrogant. He's totally unprofessional.
He is serious about Communications The business, socio, and econ majors seem to enjoy this because he does provide a lot of info. BUT if ur a science major who needs to fill the spch req he is too much sometimes. 2 speech's a week. a plus he grades a folder of ur speeches in the end that he reads, u dont delivr. good prof, too much time sometimes
Very helpful lectures. Lots of work, but it is rewarding on the long run. Only thing I didn't really like was that it seems like he picks out favorites. Did anyone else feel this, or am I being too judgmental? :P He's a nice guy, but it just seemed as if he critiques some speeches more positively than others (even if they're equally excellent).
Attendance is a must cuz he docs pnts. Its annoying that u hav to do 2 speeches/week, but they r easy to prepare & u dont give them to the whole class. just a group of 5 ppl. There is one exam (EASY open note/book) 1 test out speech that u give to him in a small group of 5 as well. his class boosts ur confidence but the work is annoying sometimes
AWESOME PROFESSOR IN PUBLIC SPEAKING 1! FOLLOW HIS ORDERS, ATTEND CLASS, AND DO YOUR STUFF. TAKE HIM FOR NEXT SEMESTER. YOU'LL BE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE HIM BECAUSE HE'LL RETIRE AFTER TWO SEMESTER!! HIS CLASS IS TOO HARD TO FAIL!
NOT TYPICAL PROFESSOR. he provides skills and tools for public speaking that will be helpful throughout your life. straight forward, clear, attendance mandatory, BE ON TIME, sit in front of class, follow his format/rules. Open book/open note 1 exam, 1 test-out 7 min speech. do the work and you will get an A. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT FROM GARY RYBOLD.
Great instructor for communication and speech class!!
You do so much work in the class! Had to do two speeches per class, and the prep work was extensive! If you got a crappy folder then you were kind of screwed on the extemp speech. He gives almost everyone A's but it's a LOT of work.
Knows a lot about what he is teaching and wants everyone to get hands on experience. lectured twice the entire semester and class goes by so fast. for com 3 go to the tournaments or you have to take a hard test and he kinda holds a grudge, but if you go its the easiest A you'll ever receive!
This was my first speech class ever taken, and it was extremely fair. He is very specific on how he wants the speeches, which is why he guides you the whole way through. Only one graded speech - ever (he only watches your speech at the end of the semester). Just put the time to do the work (usually before class) and you'll get an A.
I thought the class was boring but I liked when we would get into small groups and joke around for most of the class. Overall the class was easy!
Okay teacher. Interesting guy who is really smart, but hardly even lectured. His final was extremely difficult & you have to do a 12 page paper too. A lot of work, but overall a beneficial class.
I was really scared of speech class and dropped one time prior to taking it with Gary and it was truly such a laid back and easy class! I highly recommend this class if you are really afraid of public speaking. You only ever speak in little groups of 5/6 people and never in front of the entire class. His teaching method is great! Take this class!!
Gary is awesome! Class was fun! Homework after every class, but it is not challenging. 6-8 minute speeches in front of only small groups. Attendance required! 1 open book essay exam, 5 impromptu & 11 extemp speeches required- only 1 extemp speech graded at the end of the semester and almost everyone got an A! Recommend!!
I had such a great experience in Gary's class this semester. I am a much more confident speaker because of this course. You'll make a lot of friends. You only give speeches to small groups. More work than I expected for a Comm class, but its not hard and helps a lot in the end. Go to class. Don't stress, only one speech graded. Great professor!
Professor Rybold is an excellent educator - passionate and intelligent - and he takes his attendance policy very seriously without the best clarification on what is expected. Most professors allow three absences in a 16.6 week course, or at least allow two, and drop after the third. Be warned, he will drop you literally after your second absence.
This was one of the classes I actually looked forward to. My speech delivery improved weekly because I did all the work etc. If you put in work you will get results, easiest A I've ever earned. (I did attend every class though, keep that in mind)
this class is easy A as long as you do your speech and be prepared for each session. his final is so easy. you just need to show him you are an active student. do your job get A. the speech are in front of group of students not the whole class, even in final he seat in a small group and you are talking in front of 4 to 5 people.
Don't miss any class cuz u will get a grade down. 10 speeches , 10 SEE-i. just the final with the prof all other work with small groups. the class has too much to do but i learned a lot. He is a nice prof ever. Go every class do ur work and get an A as i got :)
Gary is a great! Second time I had him as an instructor and it was another good experience. The class does require a good amount of work, but it really is beneficial, and if you show him your working hard then you'll get a good grade. Attendance in mandatory. I recommend going to tournaments to waive the paper and final. Fun class! Recommend!
Gary is a great professor! Funny, attentive and almost never gets angry. The class is an easy-A if you put in the effort and prepare for the extemp/impromptu speeches. Just do your work and you'll be fine.
He is an amazing teacher!! I had him as a substitute for two classes, but those two classes were awesome! I love Comm1 and he made the class so much better. A GREAT TEACHER!!
I didn't really care for him at all. He came off as nice guy, but I didn't really like his teaching style. He went way to fast when he lectured and it seemed that he thought that you were automatically going to catch on. I wanted to become a better speaker after this class, but to be honest I don't think I improved at all.
Gary is an awesome teacher! I took his 8 week course, but learned so much. He really does care about you becoming a better speaker. I suggest that if you take the 8 week course you show up on time and never miss class! You do a ton of speeches, but in small groups. Do not be afraid, this class is awesome! I totally over came my fear.
would HIGHLY recommend gary. such a kind hearted and easy going man who seems to love his job which is very encouraging. although some lectures could get long or boring, he is very helpful and taught me a lot. took this class in the summer and wish i could have him again for another class
He is one of the best Proffesor in IVC. The class is not easy because we have to give a speech manyyyyyy times, but he makes class fun. A lots of work is required. Literally A LOT. But he is not a tough grader. Attendance is mandatory. If you forget doing an assignment, you are kicked out of the classroom till you finish it.
He made public speaking very easy. I definitely overcame my fear. He does put you a little out of your comfort zone but that's how the whole class was. You are not alone! My first speech was like 3 minutes. The rest of mine were almost 8 minutes and it went by fast! I took the 8 week class and I don't regret it. Impromptu speeches were kinda scary.
Dr. Rybold is easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. His non-conventional way of teaching the class encourages you Not to be worried by a grade, but to learn the skills to be a good public speaker. Yes, there is a lot of work in this class(12 extemp and 5 impromptu speeches), but this will make you practice to be test out. Great teacher.
Prof. Rybold is most inspirational!! He helped me get past my PTSD and fears of speaking in public. This Professor truly cares about his students. I would take him again
I took the 8 week class and I was trying to avoid public speaking for so long. I hated it until this class. Gary is so helpful and caring and he helps a lot. Honestly, I HATED public speaking until this class. By the end of the class I felt so comfortable speaking in front of anyone. I recommend this class for everyone. It actually helps!
Professor Rybold is the best teacher. I took a speech class more than 10 years ago at a different college &got a D because i had anxiety to speak infront of others but I needed to repeat this class Therefore I was so nervous to take Rybold class and let me tell you I wish this class never ended! Hes the best, helps you to succeed! U wil luv him!
Take Comm 1 with Gary, you wont regret it!! This was one of my favorite classes that Ive taken at IVC. Comm 1 with Gary was really fun and stress free! Speeches are only in small groups, never in front of the entire class. I took the eight week class and it flew by! I feel so much more confident in my public speaking skills! Gary is the best!!!
AWESOME! Enthusiastic. Do your best, perfect attendance is a + , ready & prepared surely you'll get an A.
Gary is an amazing communications professor. I was extremely nervous to take public speaking so I put it off until the last semester before I transferred, but I'm so much more confident after taking this class! It's important to come prepared and participate everyday (don't skip class) and you'll definitely pass!
Really understanding but must be professional and on top of your homework
I took comm1 over the summer. The class was a lot of work, but I learned a lot. I definitely improved in my public speaking skills and learned how to create argument papers. Professor Gary is a really nice guy and wants you to learn. If you do his assigned work and put the effort in your speeches, you should get an A.
About twelve speeches, most extremps, some impromtu. Be ready to gain tonnes of confidence because you'll be speaking most of the time. Journal for each speech done, one exam, about 10 SEE-I. He grades you on one final speech, usually in the second last week of class. A lot of room for you to grow, because he'll grade you on your best.
The first part is mainly reading and writing responses, the second half is researching and giving speeches. Requires a lot of work and dedication but it pays off. Just do the assignments and you will get an A. Builds skills very quickly. The payoff is worth the effort.
Professor Rybold is very knowledgeable. I took his 8 week class and there was tons of work involved! This class is kind of scary with lots of speeches in groups of 5 but I feel I have improved my speaking skills! You must show up and participate! Lots of work during the class but the work pays off- after completing this class im happy I took it!
Gary is a laid back Professor. If you are considering to take this class, make sure you are committed. There is a lot of work that goes in to this class! 10 speeches, 10 see-is, and 10 journals. You have to read a chapter or two each week. If you come every session and do the busy work, you can guarantee yourself an A. Dont miss class!
Great communications class, if you don't participate you will not pass! This is a speech class meant for you to practice speaking in front of others, I really like how he divided us into groups so that the person speaking is only speaking to like 5 other people. He doesn't use Canvas and you have to write a lot of speeches.
Textbook was provided for free, online. This is a participation based class so come prepared to work. If you have speech anxiety, find a different way to get your critical thinking in. Research heavy class, I recommend taking before WR1.
Great guy, took him during summer. Class was easy. Just do your readings and speeches and its an easy A
Super funny and very approachable outside of class, but can also be really snappy if he decides he doesn't like you. Not a tough grader, but textbook is necessary.
I had a blast in this class + made friends. You must participate and no phone use! Gary doesn't like that. He did a great job preparing us for the testout speech. If you show up, give 10 speeches, test out, turn in SEE-I's, you get an A. I feel very prepared to speech in a professional environment. Very comfortable, supportive small group setting.
Class was super easy and you get in groups about 5 or 6 to speak in front of for your speeches rather than speaking in front of the whole class. He's really snappy sometimes and gets irritated which I thought was annoying. Just show up to his class and don't let him see you on your phone because he hates that.
Have a debate and a writing final exam, and one 12-page essay but if you watch and go to the outside debate tournaments 4 times, you can skip the writing exam and essay (but not the in-class debate). Overall, it is an easy A.
Professor Rybold or Gary as he likes to be called is by far my favorite professor at IVC. I took Comm 1 with him over the summer and discovered that I like communication, he helped me a lot and gave great feedbacks. Then in Spring I took Comm 3 with him and once again had a great time. He gave me honest feedback and helped me grow.
His real goal is to see if you put in effort into learning the material. On the first day of class he said he loved giving A's and that most of us would get A's if we showed him that we were actually trying. He's pretty lenient on grading the speeches and he was a wonderful person. I highly recommend taking his class if you need to take Comm 1
To be quite frank i am not the type of person to go out and speak in front of people. When it comes to Professor Rybold and his teachings it gave me an interest and me confident to speak in front of people! he has a no cell phone policy ,but that is because he cares about you and your learning through speech! He is one of the best professors at IVC
Rybold made public speaking a bit more bearable. Probably my fav professor at IVC and I'm a psych major. His class genuinely improved my public speaking as well writing skills. There's one test, the rest is essays and speeches. Not too heavy of a workload, would highly recommend especially for someone who hates public speaking like myself.
Im a duel enrollment student and took this class my freshmen year. This class was one of the best of taken. The method Gary (yes, he asks us to call him by his first name) is revolutionary and the best Ive ever seen. Getting an A+ is almost assured, but homework is a bit heavy.
I took comm1 with professor rybold before covid in person. This class made me actually enjoy college and I was always so happy to go to his class. He wants you to pass and is there to cheer you on! Please take him he's a really good professor!!! The best at IVC!
He help me excelled in my speech skills
I love Gary, he's so cool! His class made me really enjoy speaking, we also had a lot of group discussions which is honestly great because you are able to make friends. He gives awesome feedbacks but he does give a lot of HWs. A lot of extra credit too, he really wants everyone to get an A. He is also very experienced, glad to have taken him!
Prof Rybold is and knows the subject very well. But like what someone else said earlier, he can be snappy if he doesn't like you. I agree. I would have dropped his class if I knew. Definitely was not professional all things considered.
I never want to see this man again. Way too many lectures, way too many SEE-Is for someone to handle, and an absurd amount of graded speeches. Do not take this class if public speaking gives you anxiety!
I loved Professor Rybold's class! I never liked public speaking at all but after taking his online summer course, I feel better prepared for future speeches, etc! He gives great feedback, is super funny and his teaching style makes an online class bearable. Definitely would take him again
