Very Fun Teacher, really knows his stuff about foreign languages and cultures. Teaches more than just a language. Great teacher.

Very good teacher. Very helpful. Highly recommend. Class has lots of homework. Quiz every week, with a midterm and final.
Good teacher.
participation & quizzes = 60% of grade, 3 exams = other 40%. He concentrates on reading a story in spanish. be ready to write essays in spanish. He presents the 8 highest verb tenses in a partial session w/o in depth explanation. A lot of homework.
Impatient with questions, doesn't like to repeat himself, even though he throws the info out rapidly, can't read his writing on the board or grading your papers...
Takes spanish very seriously, and isn't very patient w/those who aren't out to travel to Mexico and speak spanish daily. Not a easy class. I would recommend Sobo at RO instead.
The best Spanish teacher I have ever had. So long as you study and have some desire to learn the material, you should get an A. One of the most energetic and entertaining teacher of my life.
VERY SMART TEACHER SPEAKS LIKE 5 LANGUAGES...HARD CLASS BUT GOOD TEACHER OFFERS STUDY GROUPS BEFORE AND AFTER CLASS BUT THERE IS QUIZZES EVERY WEEK...BE READY FOR THAT
Awesome teacher. Knows his stuff. Do your homework and study, easy to get an A+. Extra credit offered on all exames and quizes. Be ready for oral questions on quiz. Sometimes instructions are unclear, so ask if not sure, even on test.
Awesome professor! I love him, he was very interested in making you learn Spanish. If you are from another country, he will like you even more.
GREAT TEACHER!!!!
Only the beginners class seem to give him good marks. If you keep going to 3rd & 4th semesters he gets worse (patience, temper, clarity,) and you get frustrated cuz you can only speak in the present tense!!!!!!
Mr. Scavnicky is a great spanish teacher!

I took him for an intermediate II to learn more Spanish. He is very tough, but I learned alot! However, I got busy, and skipped the final. I didn't care much about my grade, but thought it was unfair to get an "F" when I did all the other work.
GREAT!
He is very good. He tells you what you need to study for the quizzes and exams. No surprises! You have to do the homework and all the quizzes to get a B or higher. I love him, he is very helpful and organize.
Dr Scavnicky is a great professor. You will learn alot but be prepared to study and do alot of homework. Take him you won't be sorry.
He really wants to you learn the language therefore he offers ways to help students after class if they need it
He was really bad. Don't take him!!!
Great professor! He is sooo nice and helpful. He is a great teacher and does not make the class boring. You learn a lot just going to class. I didn't even study for the quizzes or tests, just went to class and got a B in the class. Take him!!
I hated this class so much.Be ready for a lot of homework, a quiz and getting called on 4-6 times, every class. He packs so much into every second of every class, its stupid as hell. Plus given all this and his rules u have to show up every class. worst ever to me.
He is a really great teacher. Enthusiastic, entertaining, and polite. He watches to see how much effort you put in and always grades in the favor of people who try. Very fair. Very fun!
He is a great teacher!!! If you want to learn (seriously) Spanish, take his class! Prepare yourself for a lot of homework and the his class is fast. But you will learn Spanish! He is fair.
He is a great teacher! Makes the class interesting and fun! May give a lot of tests, but he at times has given my class a chance to make up for a bad grade. He speaks fast in spanish, so pay close attention! DO THE HOMEWORK!!! TAKE HIM if u want to seriously learn spanish!
Good teacher. Take him, he's the best spanish teacher that you'll ever have.
ill be honest i came in knowing some spanish but i never did any hw and i basically showed up for half the semester and the days i did go in id go in late. i did very well on tests & quizzes, everything is laid out easily in the books, he explains well in class. easy teacher. class is boring never get out early and he never misses any classes.
I think he was horrible language professor. I have never had a language class and i couldn't hardly follow him. If you already know some spanish it would probable be a lot easier. But for me he went way to fast. Good Luck with Him.
For new spanish students this professor is not advised. Ofcourse he knows his stuff...but it is not easily laid out. No visual aides. Just do the homework and be prepared in class. No interactive learning or time to absorb in class.
He expects way too much for an introductory course. His tests are practically impossible unless you know Spanish and have all the time in the world to study. I feel like I learned vocabulary but I fell like I wouldn't be able to hold a conversation in Spanish at all. If this is your first exposure to Spanish, take a different teacher.
Very arrogant and apathetic, has an inflated sense of his own worth. Do not take if just beginning Spanish and/ or taking a full load given that he demands Perfection from his students. While he is one of the more lively instructors I've had it comes with a condescending pretentiousness. Be warned!
He is the best teacher! If you really want to learn a language, take him. He gives good exercises and he is fair in grading. He has 10 min. quizzes every week. They are quick, short, straight to the point. You tells a lot about different cultures, too.He is great! Most student have him for all the spa courses (I,II,III)You will not regret it!
Probably one of the EASIEST classes i have taken. I did not remember ANY spanish from high school and came in thinking this class would be difficult, but if you show up to class every day and do the homework you'll be fine. The quizzes are easy. If you're a slacker then you will not do well.
The best professor I've ever had. Comes up with jokes and fun stories to aid in remembering material. Will sometimes challenge your weaknesses in a helpful manner. If you do your homework, quizzes will be a breeze.
Gary Scavnicky is the best teacher ever. He understands what being a student is like and works with you. He has rad hair too!!
Dr Scavnicky is good. He strives to broaden students' worldviews beyond the language mechanics being taught. This is done via various cultural extras, including films and poetry. He also sings and dances authentically. Furthermore, he is easily the best-dressed instructor at OCC. A great experience! Take him!
LOVE THIS CLASS!!!Amazing teacher who makes learning fun and interesting.I came into class after a long period away from school. Shame on any who would criticize this prof. Only the slackers dont' like him. This is college people! DO YOUR WORK and you will be fine. He makes it easy to get an A as long as you DO THE WORK. Extra credit on all quize
I think the negative comments must have come from the same student. This professor is awesome. I rearranged the rest of my schedule so that I could take Spanish II with him. I like his style. You can get an A if you do the work. He offers extra credit.Lots of people want an A with no work. Just do the homework, you will get an A.Love the class
He is a good teacher. He makes sure you dont slack off in class. If you do the homework and go to the TA before class (which is extra credit), you'll do great in the class
This professor is amazing. This class is absolutely my favorite.I took 1510 w/him & plan on taking all my Spanish classes with Dr. Scavnicky. You do get called on in class, but it's straight from the homework. There are no suprises. If you don't do the homewok and get called on, he will often pass over you and come back, but just do it,you'll get an A.
Amazing professor.
I loved this professor he was very helpful.Had quizzes every class meeting. Lots of homework given.
This professor is amazing! He has been my favorite professor by far. I have taken all 3 of my Spanish classes with him so far, and I will miss him next semester. My next prof will have some big shoes to fill. He gives a lot of homework, but the homework makes the quizes easier. All oral answers comes from the homework.
great professor. He gives you the chance to do well. A lot of homework but if you do the homework, yo will see your quiz grades will be high. Hopefully, i can get him for Spanish 2
There is a lot of homework, most of which has little to do with the quizzes. If you don't know one verb on the quiz, you will lose points six times, so you would already be down to an 80 for missing one thing. He is difficult to understand on the oral parts of the quiz. While the class is lively, and he is interesting, he is not a great teacher.
Excellent professor.I never thought I could learn Spanish, now I LOVE it.There is a good amount of homework, but none of it is wasted.Every bit of homework relates to what you have learned. If you do the homework and come to class, you will do well on the quizzes. He also gives a lot of extra credit. If you are lazy-then,you won't. A+A+A+A+A+
Okay, so there is a ton of homework and a quiz every week, which scared me at first. But as long as you stay on top of it you will do great! If you seriously want to learn TAKE HIM! Scavnicky is a great teacher!! Don't be late to class and don't miss one either! You have to work hard, but it will pay off!
GREAT PROFESSOR! Highly recommended. He really wants to see his student pass. He will even try to correct u while taking a quiz so you dont lose points! He offers SO MUCH extra credit that there is no way you can fail. If you watch a spanish movie for xtra cr it bumps you A WHOLE LETTER GRADE on your FINAL. Attending tutor sessions also xtra credit
This is a professor you want if you are struggling with spanish. I had a lot of previous spanish experience coming into the class, so the class was extremely easy. He does not get into unnecessary details of spanish, he WANTS you to learn the language. Very easy, plenty of extra credit, and you get extra cred for getting extra help! A must take.
Super professor!A decent amount of homework, but you will learn a lot. He gives a short quiz every day, but they are not too hard. Extra credit on every quiz and even extra credit for going to the tutor before and after class.Extra credit if you watch a movie too. Most of the classes don't get out early, but it is a fun class.
Super professor! He gives decent amount of homework, but you will learn a lot. He gives a very short quiz every day, but they are not too hard. Extra credit on every quiz and even extra credit for going to the tutor before and after class.Extra credit if you watch a movie too. Most of the classes don't get out early, but it is a fun class.
awesome teacher. I loved taking spanish at OCC! A lot of homework, but it was okay. He is a really fair teacher, and really tried to help erverybody who struggled!
Mi profesor favorito! He requires a lot of hard work and studying, but if you apply yourself - you'll do great! He's extremely helpful and really wants his students to learn. Take his class! :) Flag this rating
He is a great professor as long as you do the homework and pay attention in class. He practically tells you all the answers when he does a review before each quiz.
good teacher, wants you to succeed.
Literally the best teacher I've ever had. Great sense of humor and wants you to succeed. If you have a sense of humor, take Dr. Scavnicky!
Gary Scavnicky is a professor who makes you feel lucky to have been able to take his class. Yes, he may teach quickly and expect perfection. What other language class isn't like that? I decided to major in Spanish after having taken this class; before, I thought I'd never learn learn Spanish properly! Highly recommended, but expect to WORK! (Duh)
Very open to questions and gives many opportunities for study sessions and tutoring. There are many tests and a lot of homework. He moves at a fast pace which makes it hard for students who have never learned a foriegn language. Lectures are fun and interesting. You need to work hard in this class but it pays off well. Very recommend this teacher!
The teacher is great, he really tries to get everyone in the classroom A's and gives a lot of extra credit. But if you don't keep up your end of the bargain and do your homework, you probably won't pass. He will put in as much effort as you do and try to get you to pass. Recommend him to everyone!
I had Dr. Scavnicky for 2 beginning Spanish classes in 1995-1996. He inspired me and shared so much of his own Spanish for language and culture that I went on to teach Spanish myself and am starting my 9th year of teaching this year. He is wonderful. You are lucky if you have the great opportunity to have him as a professor.
Dr. Scavnicky is a little bit difficult to get at first. He is a brilliant, brilliant man who has been teaching for so many years. Sometimes he forgets to explain things, but if you ask, he will be happy to help and explain. He truly loves thesubject and his students more than anything. He is the most lively 70 yr old I've ever met.I recommend him!
Dr. Scavnicky is an amazing teacher. If you want to actually learn, take him. People come from other classes to his class and don't understand a thing. My recommendation is to take him from Spanish 1 on. Overall, great! Occasionally sings and dances as well. He's awesome!!! He cares so much for his students.
Dr.Scavnicky is a great professor. I have had him since Spanish 1, he is very caring about his students. He is not like most professors who don't care why you miss class, he will want to know when and why, and let you make up missed work. The quizzes are fairly easy, 1 every week. The exams are short, usually 2-3 a semester. Worth taking!
Awesome professor! Makes jokes, seems to actually like what he is doing. doesn't make you feel bad for trying something new. only downside is a quiz every class period.
The greatest professor and human being!
You will regret not taking Spanish with him. He is helpful and fun to learn with, he makes jokes and gives personal experiences. His is worth taking take this from me YOU WILL REGRET NOT TAKING SPANISH WITH HIM
Excellent class! Dr. Scavnicky really supports his students. The student tutor, Hannah Hawkins, was absolutely the best. A great team!
This professor is great! He is very helpful and wants all his students to succeed. He does give a quiz every class period. It keeps you prepared and they are very easy A's if you study. Also he is always there before and after class if you need extra help!
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER TAKEN! Took the accelerated course over the summer it was awful. Ended up dropping the class because the professor was useless. Was struggling in the class and when I went to the professor for help he blamed it on my Spanish 1 teacher for "not teaching correctly". He was all over the place, no visual aid, or study guides.
Dr. Scavnicky is a fantastic teacher. I took the accelerated summer course and easily passed with an A. Respect him and he will respect you. He is a very nice guy and is there for you. He wants all students to succeed. Lectures were long but worth it, if you skip class you will fall behind very quickly. Go to class, listen, take notes, get an A.
Mr. Scavnicky can be all over the map sometimes when he is assigning homework. He's super big into participation, calling on you during class, and gives a quiz almost every class period. However, he wants you to really learn and succeed. He will drop quizzes with your worst grade, and give the opportunity for some extra credit.
One of the best teachers I have had in a long time. I signed up for SPA1510 and soon realized I was finding the material easy. He told me that he would allow me to skip straight to SPA2610 so long as I attented-passed his SPA1530 class as well. Both courses were clear and concise. Scavnicky has a great deal of knowledge and is very accomodating.
I have taken Spanish 1 and 2 in high school so it was pretty easy for me, but he talks really fast so it is kind of hard for people to keep up. You will have a quiz pretty much every class but I have received an A on most of them. He also gives many extra credit questions on quizzes. He makes everyone participate and we go over homework in class.
Overrall, a good teacher that means well. A little fast paced for Spanish 1, but easy to catch onto. Must pay attention and be ready to be called on. Expect homework, but it is not tough. Expect a quiz every week. I would recommend taking this class twice a week instead of one long period because it definitely drags on!!!
No visual aids. Gives quizzes every week and dictates the questions orally. Not conduisive for visual learners. Goes off on random history tangents that have nothing to do with corse materiel. Only take this class if you had him for 1510 and are familiar with his teaching style. I had another teacher and never was able to fully catch up.
Very nice teacher that means well, however absolutely NO visual aids!!! He talks in Spanish pretty much the whole time. Quiz every week, talks super fast & will only repeat himself TWICE during oral part. He gives A LOT of homework!!! Would not recommend unless you had him previously or already know Spanish well :/
I have taken Spanish 1 & 2 with Scavnicky. At first I remember thinking he was fast & sporadic but now I'm used to the pace of the class. He gives quizzes every class, which give you instant feedback and raise your grade. They key to success is studying an hour a day. It seems like a lot, but hard work pays off. Scavnicky loves politics and jokes.
Gary is an awesome professor! A lot of students will talk very discouraging towards him because they do not do well in his class. If you do your homework, study the suggested amount of hours and go to group study, you will do great! At first I did not care for him, but once you get to know him hes a great professor with lots of knowledge!!
the best teacher ever! makes learning fun :-)
Clear and concise. You must be in class. The study groups will help your grade tremendously, but he does offer extra credit to compensate low scores. Overall he is fair, and appreciates your feedback.
Amazing teacher. Very thorough. Great sense of humor. I loved his Spanish classes!
The class is HEAVILY graded on being able to understand him vocally, which is near impossible when he fakes a spanish accent. You get a lot of HW and about 1 hour of the class is him going over the HW and he basically teaches for 1 hour. He expects YOU to learn more outside of class than what he teaches. He is quick to blame others for his mistakes
you're given a quiz every single class period but they are fairly easy if you complete the homework. text book is required, used everyday. His class may seem intimidating at first because he goes rather quick but one you get in the swing of things it a good class.
Dr. Scavnicky gives quizzes every class and you will definitely need the book. He is very caring and always willing to help because he wants everyone to pass. Would definitely recommend his class!
This class consists of a quiz every single time you meet (every quiz also has bonus points). Overall, your final grade consists of 30% attendance/ participation, 20% for the midterm, 30% homework/ in-class assignments, and 20% for the final. As long as you put in time to study and show him that you are trying, you should do fine! BUY THE BOOK!
While I wasn't sure about him at the beginning of the semester, Professor Scavnicky is one of the best professors I had at OCC. As long as you show up, answer his questions, and generally just give him respect, he'll be a great prof for you too.
The class is hard, but not because the content is hard. The book is used every class and he requires the access code (you will hardly use the code&when you do it has to be printed or hand written). Your grade will be on the quizzes(every class) and the mid/final. He doesn't have structure or work on the syllabus. Only takes calls, doesn't use email
Nice man but I think he shouldn't be a teacher.
Great, caring professor. Makes an effort to make sure everyone passes the class. Make sure you buy the book, do your homework for every class and study because he will call names randomly to answer questions. There is a quiz every class but they are easy and come with bonus points as long as you do the homework. A bit scattered with teaching.
you really learn by yourself to be honest then come and take quizzes and exams.
just avoid. He's not a very nice guy, gives a quiz every class period.
This is one of the few classes where I had to work hard for my grade. There are quizzes every class period and it makes up a big portion of your grade. He gives a lot of hw and will spend 30 mins going over it. Make sure to do it! He will call on people and if you don't do it, he will turn that hw into a quiz grade. There is only a midterm and a FE
I had the pleasure of being Dr. Sckavnicky's student for two semesters, and I definitely learned a lot of Spanish! If you want to succeed, do all of the homework, study the verbs, and try to really develop more proficiency in Spanish. He has a quiz every class, and there are two tests each semester. Good luck!
Dr Scavnicky is one of my favorite professors. He really respects students that put forth their best effort. After you learn the structure of his class it is very do-able. It is important to organize all of the paperwork he hands out in class. Also always do your bookwork or you'll look like a fool in class.
Saw these good reviews and took him for my foreign language credit, but holy cow is his class rough! You go over TONS of information per day, probably enough for 4 classes. He gets mad when you restate questions on paper, and gets annoyed when you can't memorize something he taught literally 20 seconds ago. A little intense for Beginner's Spanish!
He gives a quiz every class and he tends to embarass people when they show up late. When he assigns homework, he doesn't explain it completely and he expects you to know what you're doing. You're going to get lost in this class and you'll be confused from day one. If he sees you walk out with your phone, he will call you out.
Honestly, I have no idea how he has any good reviews. Hands down worse professor i've ever had. He is incredibly rude and insensitive. Is not clear on homework and will rip you to shreds in front of the class if you don't complete it. He never uses his email. You can literally never miss a class. Sick of him being unclear and all of his quizzes.
Would recommend this class for anyone who's taken Spanish before. The class is very quick-paced and he has a quiz every single class period. He's VERY sarcastic so if that isn't the type of person you vibe with try avoiding this class. Homework helped enhance concepts learned in class and really do help on the quizzes. Don't forget accent marks!!
He is very knowledgeable about the subject, Spanish, as well as many other languages. It takes a little bit to get into the swing of how he rolls and the class structure. Take lots of time to memorize the words! Be prepared to take lots of notes! And pay attention, there is a LOT per class. Participation matters a lot, try not to miss a class.
If you do not know any Spanish, DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN! He does not teach you and expects you to know everything. There WILL be a quiz EVERY class and you learn knew things every single day without break. He is a kind man but will degrade you without knowing he's doing it... I don't suggest him unless you want to be frustrated to the maximum.
The class itself wasn't too difficult but he doesn't teach well, its very self taught. I have never spoken Spanish in my life, and a lot of people had small backgrounds or previous high school knowledge, not me! Very difficult class but the ACS tutor was super helpful! Don't fall behind early, it will be a nightmare to catchup. Lots of homework.
He could not explain the work to us and never would specify what he wanted done on the assignment leaving us all confused. Does not know how to work D2L. Always assigned work on non classed days so studemts wouldnt see work until last minute. He does have alot of knowledge to share but, doesnt know how to teach it well especially online.
He seems like he would be a good professor if we were learning in person. However, he struggles tremendously with online learning. I would steer clear of him if possible until we return to in person instruction.
Scavnicky isn't the best teacher, if it wasn't for my amazing class I don't even know if I would have passed. He can be very irritable and when taking oral quizzes he only repeats stuff twice. I took Spanish for 3 years so I have the background experience and this class was hard for me. If it's your first time taking Spanish don't take his class.
Stay away at all costs! I was a straight A student until this class. All semester I regretted not dropping his class. He assigns too much homework, and has a quiz where he calls you on your personal cellphone every week. He has lots of attitude and greatly struggles to use D2L and Zoom properly.
First, he is rude. Thinks he funny and is not. Makes rude jokes. Made a slow joke at me and another student and I am special so not cool. Also shunned a girl on zoom because her kids were being too loud. Said she needs to find a babysitter cause of the noise. Its a pandemic. Students been hit hardest. What if she cant afford it? So messed up.
Had him just before the pandemic and he wasn't the greatest. Extremely old fashioned but not super hard, used no powerpoints and was just lecture. Can tell his age is getting to him, almost technologically illiterate, has difficulty hearing/seeing, very stubborn. I can only imagine how his online class is. Needs to take the hint and retire already.
Professor Scavnicky is very knowledgeable about Spanish, but his online format of teaching does not mesh well with his age. He assigns a lot of homework, but as this is a foreign language class, you have to put in the time and effort to keep up.
I took Spanish for 4 years before this class, so it was easy to pick up, but his age does not mix well with the online format. He is a tough grader, makes inappropriate jokes in class (mainly political, just not necessary), has difficulty hearing, and will only say things twice. If this will be your first Spanish class, drop it. You will not pass.
He's awesome!
