By far the best teacher I have had at WSU so far. He makes physics very easy to understand. Uses in-class demos during every class, and explains things in ways that anyone can understand. He doesn't make it boring either, which is the best part. Tests aren't hard. Weekly D2L quizzes are just fine. I HIGHLY recommend this teacher.

Great class and a great teacher. No textbook is used. No homework except for a couple weekly D2L quizzes, but they aren't hard. If you need the physics credit, take it with Gary Shields.

gos over online hw probelms in class! He is really nice about getting help and he will help over email as well. He cuvres tests and gives u a sheet of paper to write notes on for the test! He is kinda slow posting things online sometimes but he will help u with the prelabs in lab and still give you full points. Awsome prof!

Coming from someone who doesn't possess much talent in Physics, I would definitely recommend this professor. He makes the lectures interesting and even though it can sometimes be difficult to understand (it is physics, after all), if you try your best, you'll get a good grade. I ended up getting an A.

He tries to make class interesting. Does demonstrations almost every class period. Also will occasionally throw some jokes around. There are a lot of chances to improve your grade. He will also throw out some quizzes and a test you did poorly on. The text book is not required, but it might come in handy if you cant follow his powerpoints.

Had him for 201 and 202 and he is one of my favorite instructor's thus far at WSU. He is always looking to help his students at anytime and in anyway possible A++++++++

Professor Shields is the BEST physics professor on campus. He gives real life examples in class and also does demonstrations. He goes over homework in class. Always gets exams back 1-2 classes periods after you take it plus he goes over all of it step by step! He makes physics fun. I have enjoyed every class period with him. Definitely recommend!

the younger sheilds is great, he is helpful, does a ton of demenstrations, the labs are a breeze and if your stuck he is always around to help. The class is one of the easiest labs you could ever take. If you need your lab credit take this class.

One of the better professors I have taken in my four years at Winona State. Not very difficult. But that doesn't mean you don't learn. I would recommend taking a course with him. If I ever had to take another course in his department, I would take it with Prof Shields

I had him for conceptual physics, and while I am absolutely terrible with anything science/math I actually enjoyed this class! He makes things relatively easy to understand and some of the labs are pretty interesting! I would recommend taking class with him!

His course is easy, but you still learn a lot! The only problem I had with him is that his instructions for projects are ambiguous. Overall I would take him again, he is a great professor!

Shields was a great professor. He gave clear concise lectures and his tests were fair, not too hard. I didn't like that we had lots of busywork doing quizzes bi-weekly but the quizes do allow three tries and you can see your right/wrong answers.

I needed to take physics for my MCAT. After taking it during the summer with another prof and having to drop it, I was nervous. Shields was exactly the energetic, straight forward teacher I needed. He made physics interesting and because of him, I ended up scoring highest in my physics section of the MCAT. I now teach physics to other pre-meds.

Pretty cool guy, but I don't really remember using his text book all that much. So if you have a friend who took, or is taking his class, just borrow from them if you can't get a hold of him for something you don't understand.

Fairly easy class, gives 3 projects which take about an hour or two each, daily quizzes that are ridiculously easy if you attend class. The test was all open note. He lectures well, and is interesting to listen to.

best professor I've had, doesn't take attendance but make sure you go so you can get the info for the quizes. 4 projects one is your final and one mid term test. Quizzes each day but you can do them online outside of class and use your notes. Take this class for a easy Gen Ed youll get an A

Shields makes Energy into a really simple GenEd. The only coursework was a 4-question D2L quiz after each class, four projects that guide step-by-step, and one exam that was open note! I'm not interested in the course material, but it was still a super easy class. Bonus: you don't have any textbooks to buy! I recommend him.

Great science class to take to complete the requirement of a lab. Projects were interesting and worked on them in groups. Exams are what you would expect. Gary is the best professor by far. He understands that he teaches gen. ed. classes so he teaches them like that. He is extremely fast with grading and is helpful with any question. This class was great, learned a lot from it, it wasn't hard and it was easy. There isn't any attendance but you need to go to get the information said in class. I can' remember if we had 2 or 4 projects but they're pretty easy, also one of the exams was open notes. There isn't a book and we use the internet and google maps to learn.

He gives you quizzes everyday after the class on the notes you just took. So make sure you go to class. The quizzes are right off the notes and very easy, easy 10 points

Such a great guy, he is obviously fit for the job. No textbook at all, everything you need to know is on D2L, daily quizzes offer easy points, and the tests are entirely MC. Labs are fun as he is very relaxed with it. Try and show up sometimes because tests have questions about stuff only talked about in class. Top hat is also graded!

If you take the quizzes everyday and do well on the projects you will pass with no problem. The projects are super easy and very straight forward. He gives you all the information you need and there is no textbook. You have to download google earth and thats it! Super easy class! Recommend for easy elective!

Good professor who keeps class interesting with many demonstrations. The course description says it's a non-mathematical approach but there is definitely math involved so if you aren't good at math and don't like using formulas I wouldn't take this class. You don't need to buy a textbook.

Easiest class ever. The mid term was open notes. Go to class each day, write all of the notes down that he write on the board, take the online open note quiz each day after class and you will easily get an A. I skipped the class quite often and still got an A. He assigns like 3 projects to do, but they are not that hard.

Super easy class, open note tests, and plenty of points to rack up from easy quizzes. He knows most people taking this class aren't physics majors, and teaches accordingly.

Excellent professor, credits were taken during a month long summer course. I'm not great at math but he made the material accessible and eventually intuitive. More than enough opportunities to earn points for a decent grade, provided you put in the time to study lectures and complete the online assignments.

If you have to take Physics at WSU take Shields! He's very helpful and willing to work through homework problems with you. You get a cheat sheet on tests and labs are fun! He always has a cool demonstration during lecture to help you better understand the material! I would highly recommend Professor Shields!

Professor shields made physics fun and interesting. He made it very clear what he expected and if you met the criteria it's an easy a. He genuinely wants people to go do well and provides study guides that look just like the tests. Show up to class and do the labs and you'll be fine

I loved having Gary as a professor! In this class, he gave a ton of interesting lectures and did a lot of cool experiments and related them back to popular topics in the world. He's really funny and is basically a little kid at heart and likes having fun! I would definitely remember any class he teaches!

Energy is a very easy class and professor Shields is very clear cut and explains the information easily.

Super easy general ed class! We just did projects and then an open note midterm which was very easy. Would recommend!

Easy class. No textbook required. One open note midterm, 4 pretty simple projects. Daily 10 point quizzes you can take online. Shields is a nice guy, however if you have a question I wouldn't suggest trying to communicate over email.

Overall, this is an easy general. One exam (open note), three projects, (he tells you what's wrong and you can make corrections to get a 95%), and daily quizzes you take after class. If you aren't good at sciences, this is the class for you.

Very interesting class, but thought it would be easier, There are only 2 tests and a final which were hard even though we got to use notes, and the final was a group final. He curves a lot and makes it easy to get an A.

In this class there was a Current Event due every week based on something we learned in class that was 300 words- not to difficult but sometimes time consuming. There was also a online quiz every week but if you go to class the quizzes aren't to hard. Only 2 tests in the class and 1 final. He did a lot of demonstrations and often curved tests.

I would recommend anyone to take a class with Professor Shields. He is a very good professor who can make any class enjoyable. He finds a way to make things interesting during class. Easily one of the better professors at Winona State

Such an amazing professor. He is very intellegent and you can see how he loves to teach this subject. I usually do not like science classes but his class was my favorite by far only because of how he taught us. Gave visual fun examples everyday. highly recommend this professor.

Very good teacher. Easy to follow notes, and lets you use notes on all quizzes and tests. Only 2 tests, midterm and final, weekly quizzes online straight from previous weeks notes. Very helpful if you have questions, and definitely enjoys what he's teaching. Occasionally puts on in-class participation points so you may lose points for skipping

Shields is a pretty solid professor. He has a good sense of humor and is not boring to listen to. There is only a midterm, some participation points, and a couple projects required to pass the class. Everything is self-explanatory and it is fairly easy to do well in the class.

Gary is the best! He is super laid back and geeky about the class material. He has a dorky humor that keeps class entertaining. Only the midterm for a test, with weekly quizzes that are incredibly easy. Projects are a little annoying, but manageable. Easy A class. Would definitely take again.

Professor Shields is great! He is very chill and is helpful in class and in lab. General Physics would make a great summer course with him.

Most go to class, for energy at least. There is no book or PowerPoints posted, everything is just the notes he writes on the board. Weekly quiz that you can do on your own time. I would highly recommend taking this class.

I was dreading taking any science related class because it is NOT my strong suit but Conceptual Physics ended up being one of my favorite classes this semester! He does a lot of fun demos during class and is super helpful during lab. There is a quiz on D2L for every section so you need to check that daily but he is a great guy 10/10 would recommend

Really good lectures, lots of demonstrations, fun to go to class. Go to class to take notes, he writes everything that is on the board. Everyone failed all the tests, but to compensate, he had everyone take a group test that was pretty easy so it averaged out. I would for sure take this class again. Weekly quizzes, weekly current event, both easy.

There's a quiz for every lecture on D2L that you get 3 tries on. You take 5 tests and a final lowest test gets dropped (not the final) an 85% is an A in his class. Labs are easy and he helps if you have any questions. It helps if you go to class but i skipped a few times and did fine. It;s such an easy A you're like trying to fail if you do bad.

This is hands down the easiest class I have had yet at WSU! If you show up to class, you will get an A. You have a couple projects to do, but you get a chance to redo them if you somehow fail it. He writes down all of the information for the tests on the board, so if you take notes, you are golden. The tests are all open note! No textbook!!

TAKE THIS MAN'S CLASS ASAP!!!!! So funny and enjoys what he does more than any other professor. Makes the subject interesting and does lots of cool demos. I'm currently taking two of his classes and they are my favorite of the year. 10/10 Take Gary Shields.

Gary Shields is truly the best professor I've had thus far at WSU. He has a true passion for teaching and is a genuinely good person. He sets clear, achievable expectations for students and provides constructive feedback. If you put in a reasonable amount of effort, an A is very achievable in this class. I learned a lot and had a great time.

Literally just the best guy ever. Conceptual physics was my favoirte class this semester, even though I hate math. Lectures are fun and hes a super easy going guy. Go to class and do the quizzes, and youll get an A. Hes pretty much just a hilarioius dad for all his students. Can't say enough good things about this man.

I'm so glad I took this class. One of the first classes I have enjoyed learning about something and I'm not even a science major. The projects were annoying, but they're actually super cool afterwards. And the grading system for that is amazing. You basically either get a 100%, 95% or a 0% if you were just dumb. Overall easy A if you're competent.

He is an awesome professor. Show up and do three group projects and you pass the class with an A. All tests are open note, so if you skip class you have to get notes from friends. Very funny and nice.

Really enjoyed the class

Professor Shields is easily one of the most entertaining professors I have had. The exams look a lot like the quizzes and practice problems in the textbook, so nothing is a surprise. Top Hat questions are used in class to give credit to students with good attendance. It's an easy A if you pay attention.

Outstanding professor in general. He really goes over every single topic we learn in detail. He loves to get everyone engaged in the subject. I look forward to going to his class every single day. By far one of the best professors on campus!

I enjoyed this class but the lectures can get a little long, for the most part he makes them interesting though. It's pretty easy to get an A but tests can be hard if you don't have organized notes because they're timed. Overall, a fun professor and probably the easiest science class i've ever taken.

Gary Shields is a G. He has fun lectures, and you actually learn a lot. He is very nice and you do not have to excel in Science to succeed in his class!

Best professor ever! super chill!

This class was a breeze. Go to lecture and take notes that he writes on the board. 2 Exams that are open notes (easy A's if you take notes in class). Quizzes every week that are unlimited time and have 3 tries, also easy A's. 3 projects that he either gives you a 100% or 30% but there are retakes and he will help you fix your mistakes.

Very funny guy. Although he is lecture heavy he makes them enjoyable with humor and demonstrations. If you show up to class and listen to the lectures you will pass with a A. The labs were the hardest part of this course.

I took this class just for a gen ed and I am glad I did. Easy A if you put in minimal effort. Nothing really to do with physics, he just talks about energy sources used around the world and pros and cons. Easy online quiz one a week, 3 group projects that he gives you two submissions, open note midterm and final.

Gary is a great professor and will walk you through anything you need help with.

Gary slays he was definitely my favorite professor. Take his class for sure.
