Funny teacher, hard class especially for non-majors. Tests are hard.
Yes, he is funny, but that's about it. He gave extra credit but it wasn't helpful if students were failing. He complains about students not liking him but gives no study guides and constanly says we don't care (which makes us not care more!!!). Not the best college experience, and I LOVED bio before this.
This guy was great. He gave you plenty of opportunity to do well. He sent out the power points on lecture day and gave you weekly extra credit. He hated the book and lab manual, so his tests were mostly off the power points. I showed up twice out of the three days each week and got an A. Just read the power points weekly. Good luck!
Funny teacher, super hard tests.
No study guides. It is like a guessing game on what will be on the test. Do not take his 50 minute class sessions if you are a slow test taker. He will not stay after to let you finish the test. Overall, He makes the class harder than has to be. Biology would have been funner with someone else. So take someone else.
Dr. Shin makes the lectures really fun and interesting. He tests more on whether you understand the concepts than just rote memorization, but he really makes sure you understand the concepts and he's always available for extra help. The labs are just okay, though. Don't buy the book. Study the lecture slides (on beachboard) and attend class!
I did not do as well as I wanted, but whenever I had questions about why I got some answers wrong, Dr. Shin was always available to go over my exam with me. I probably should have seen him before the tests, too. Dr. Shin's class and tests are not "hard" as some have described them. They are a fair test of what we went over in lecture. Great class.
This professor is OK, his tests aren't hard but the class average is always 60% and he doesn't even tell us what the curve is. The labs are OK, and there are 3 online quizzes per week. This class is BS considering it is just a GE.
Go to lecture. It's SO worth it. I find biology hard, but the lectures are fun. He's totally into telling us interesting things about biology as he's going along. Go to office hours! Not as funny, but he'll help you understand EVERYTHING! I didn't like bio before this class but now I do because I understand so much more.
Hard class if your not a Science major. Watch out for cheating on quizzes, he's anal! He is an average teacher. Pretty Funny. 5 Midterms. Drop the lowest. Noncumulative final. Lab is easy points. Don't skip.
How hard could a class be when we got to take open book online quizzes and labs? Oh, hard because a few of us decided to shoot everyone in the foot and give the quiz passwords to people who didn't come to class. Dr. Shin did a great job. It's too bad some of us were too busy helping STUDENTS who had more important things to do than come to class.
Wow. First time I ever heard a complaint that a professor is "anal" about cheaters. I would like to think that some of us would have more pride in ourselves than to stand for cheaters. I agree, that he seems to care more about our grades than we do. And a study guide? Try studying biology. You know, that thing you were supposed to study?
Hard tests, but gives a ridiculous curve at the end. I got a 57% overall in the class. Ended up with a C.
dr.shin is very funny and he makes his lectures fun too. the tests are kind of hard but as long as you read and look over the powerpoints (which is the most important part when studying) everything should be fine. labs were easy but online quizzes were kind of tricky. good class, although for a non-major class, it was ridiculous!
Come come on the kickdrum come. That's Gary on the kickdrum go! Great professor just pay attention and study hard!
almost too good looking to be teaching biology. extremely helpful, DESERVES A RAISE!!!!!!!! caliente
Completely agree with the comment below... he should be modeling instead of teaching! Great professor, he's funny and helpful... test are hard but all you have to do is study.
He made a difficult subject much more difficult, avoid him.EasyF
He did not lecture he just read from his PowerPoint. Extremely hard exams for a GE class. I STRONGLY recommend avoiding this teacher !
Take Marine Bio 153 with Goodmanlowe was easier Bio 200 with Shin. I dropped out Bio 200, and then took Marine Bio, I got an A. More fun, less work,no stress.
I'm hot for teacher! Funniest teacher on campus, and I learned something too. If you get an F in this class, you're lame. Curve is SUPER helpful. Great prof. Agree with below comments, but hands off, he's mine.
This unforgivable professor's exams are extremely tough,8 chapters combined into 1 exam, most of the class getting very sub-par grades. The atmosphere during tests is very uncomfortable, 3 people hovering over our shoulders. His grading scale is very difficult and unconventional.Do not take this guy
hes funny
cheezy jokes in the right way?
"Delicious Steak Dinner!" --he's awesome, funny, entertaining, and informative. If you remember anything at all from High School this class will be a breeze, although his tests are a bit difficult (from what I hear anyways) if you pay attention and read what you're supposed to read, you'll be fine.
I rated him because he wanted an increase in hotness total. Gary Shin is the professor that you need if you want a fun lecture about Biology. His exams aren't easy, but if you read the book and the notes you shouldn't panic over it. Really wants you to pass but if you don't take the effort of cracking open the book, don't expect to pass his class
He is really funny and really interesting but his tests are way too hard. there are alot of tricky questions so take your time!! his lectures are pretty entertaining though. :] he does not require you come to class but good luck if you dont. and when in doubt just remember "delicious steak dinner"
He's hilarious. He takes an incredibly boring subject and actually makes it interesting and funny!
He's a very funny professor who definitely makes his classes enjoyable. His exams are somewhat challenging, and the furlough days forced him to make the third exams cover twice as much material. Overall, I recommend him, just don't fall asleep in his class!
Funniest guy. Very approachable, and has great personality. Even with the furloughs he managed to do a good job n cover a lot of material. His lectures r hilarious, n loves throwing interesting videos/jokes/facts to spice the material up. Test are not easy. Just study & go to class n ull b fine.
It takes him forever to grade a scantron test...my gosh!...hope he or his bro read this! challenging class...does provide study guides that do help in studying for the difficult tests. Make sure to go to class everyday though...tres important!
Pretty hard tests but he gives you the oppurtunity to succeed in class, which is all a teacher is really required to do. Can't really get mad at a teacher for expecting you to know the material? Extra credit helps out a ton, and he has really funny lectures and just a good guy in general. Take his class!
unreal
Awesome class, and awesome professor. Provides us with all the lectures online, and even gives us a very detailed study guide!! He's really funny, and makes the class really fun. His lectures are never boring, and always makes the material accessible to us. I'll truly miss this class, and now I'm thinking about doing a bio major...
Great teacher. Makes biology fun and interesting. I never bought the book, never even looked at the study guides and got a B in the class. Just make sure to go to ALL lectures and PAY ATTENTION. He post the slideshows online and I just skimmed them over before tests and passed.
Entertaining lecturer. Don't be an ass and nap/text during his class. Exams can be tough. The info is there, just put in the effort. (Don't need to buy the book) Go to class, you'll get extra credit that will help you pass. Class tips: Print off his study guides before the lecture and takes notes on that. It will save you!!
Gary is awesome! He is one of my all-time favorite professors, and as a non-science major, it's kind of weird. He kept my interest the entire time, and if he gets 200 hotness counts, he promised he would give everyone an A. Difficult tests, but he's really helpful and nice. Remember DSD: Delicious Steak Dinner ^_^
Not very hot but I gave him the pepper bc he really wanted to be considered hot : ) The class is very difficult and challenging. 3 tests and 1 non-cumal. final. Its a difficult class but he provides you studyguides which really help. He really understands bio is not for every1 so he tries to make it as clear as possible. I'd take him again.
Shin saved my life!!! I hated the idea of tkng such a bull class. But Shin made Bio REAL intrsting. I relly recmnd going to class, even thou mite feel you dnt have to, the exprnc is so worth it, hes the defintn of a great teacher, just keep up with lecture and he will do evrything he can to help you! Plus hes gota lota peppers!!!
I don't know why everyone says he's hard, he's really not. Bought the book, but never opened it. Just studied off the study guides he provided and got an A in the class. He randomly picks 5 days and if you're there, you can get 50 points E.C. He's a funny guy and keeps you up during lecture. 3 exams, 1 non ****final, make sure you do your labs!
I was in his class today andhe explained his grading process. Its helpful but at the same time it seems it is a result of him having poor experiences with previous classes and I feel that he is expecting mediocrity from the students. I know he means well but I was offended by it. Bring your "A" game prove him wrong.
I was so miserable in this class. He's so negative about everything, and his lectures are so boring. The tests were really hard, but I suspect they could have been easier if he presented the material better. I didn't learn anything in the lectures, and had to try to learn the material from the textbook before tests.
If you want to lower your GPA then take him, he is so rude and as ass. He will not even respond to an email or listen to u after class soo rude and boring. He does not know how to teach and he writes the exams himself and makes them super hard. DON'T TAKE
I'll let u decide: We're supposed to have 4 exams but he cramped 2 really hard ones into 1 so we only had 3 exams. He claimed that he is very understanding of students' hardship because he was once a student. However, instead of helping the students out, he blamed everything on the furlough days! The way he returns the exam is even more pathetic !!
Gary is a funny guy but his class is difficult. He gives out 50pts of EC over five random days but you MUST be there right when class starts to get it (hard for me since class was at 8am). The amount of material is overwhelming but supposedly gets easier as the semester goes on. He also threatened to give me a zero on a lab because I "left early"
It is a hard class, but if you take the time and acutally study it is not that bad. the 50 points extra credit is helpful. Gary will answer questions during office hour if you don't understand something during lectures.
Dr. Shin made it worth coming to class at 8am. Going to every lecture is extremely important, as he highlights what is important on his powerpoints. You don't need the book if you take great notes during lecture and know everything he mentions on his powerpoints. Also,he gives a full grade worth of extra credit if you show up to every class.
Go to class, pay attention (he explain things very well), he makes note outlines for you (how awesome!) DON'T just look at them WRITE notes for yourself on them! Study a few days ahead of time for a couple hrs before your test date. If you don't understand something don't whine to him about it ask him about it. A bad rating for Gary = a bad student
What can you say he knows his stuff and teaches it very well. However, this material is not easy at all it almost feels like in order to get a grade u cant have a life and only focus on his class. (Take at your own risk).
Hardest class I have taken at the college level, it is intresting material however the depth of it is what kills the students. It is not impossible we just have to work our butts off for a ge class. "/
Dr. Shin is great, besides the fact that he makes the class intresting and is hillarious he pounds the material for a student to learn. I'm not gonna lie it is some quite rather hard material but not impossible. Just come to class and take good notes and study ahead you should be fine.
BIO 200 was by far one of the most difficult and challenging classes that I have taken. I was a graduating senior while taking bio and I barely passed and I am an accounting major! Try taking another science to ffill the requirement.
Tough course for a general education class, but he does help a lot and is clear since the beggining of the class that it will not be easy and he does fail people. Taking his word of breathing biology for the whole term is the only way to get a good grade. Besides the fact of it being a difficult class he is funny and makes the material intresting h
The previous two comments do not know what they are talking about!!!! You guys are at a University these courses are not supposed to be easy, you are supposed to put in effort and time like i did and you will ge a GOOD grade. Plus Dr. Shin is GREAT he is extremely helpful and is passionate about what he teaches. Therefore pay attention and you will
Ok...tell me what you think!! The material is awfully a lot i mean its Biology we are studying all life on EARTH!! To top it off he goes fast and the tests are not easy at all an average of EIGHT chapters per test and four exams in total plus we have to do about ten quizzes for the lab also. It is extremely frustraiting/stressfull tough class!!!
Lectures are interesting, the prof will answer any question about the subject and always tries to keep the class engaged. But he lectures at a pretty fast pace so it's best to print the lecture notes and take notes on them. Exams can be very detailed so you need to study the lecture notes and study guides
Awesome professor. Bit of a tough class, but it's everything a college class should be. You learn a lot from him and he's a really funny guy. Perfect combination. I got a B, but even if I'd failed, I'd still be glad I took his class.
He really helps his students understand the material that is covered in class. I find it impossible for anyone to hate or even dislike this professor.
took thic class during the summer and it was not bad at all. the lectures are no boring at all he has jokes and stories that are helpful. the labs are fun i recommend you go to lecture and labs it will help you a lot for the test. the test are a little hard but u need to study a lot yes he does curve but at the end i passed the class with a C
I took this class during the summer. It was a lot of reading but it's doable. If you take him during regular semester, it shouldn't be that difficult. His test can be somewhat hard but he gives you study guides for all chapters. Lectures are pretty interesting with his stories, some are wild/hilarious ones.
Its college, its not suppose to be easy. The difficulty of this NONMAJOR biology class is ridiculous, but its still doable. The professor himself, I find him to be obnoxious. His jokes are offensive and lecture are dry.
The guy is funny but don't take his class lightly because it is hard! Even though he gives practice tests, the real ones are still hard! so study, study, and keep studying!
ok guys- I know college is suppose to be challenging but this guy (shin) take this course to a different level- its a 200 level course and he teaches it as a 400 level course- he is hard. In order to pass you must read the chapters and memorize everything in order to well on the exams. Once keep a perfect attendence for extra points. final is alway
Ok this guy just makes promises to curve the class because more than 50% of the class was failing, but he ends up not curving. So, whoever failed the class got an F. Never take him, even if, he is funny in a weird way. Just take Marine Bio, so you can have fun and actually learn or take BIOL 211, even if, you have to take CHEM 111A.
Do the readings, study guides, and practice exams and you will still fail. Go to lecture and get nothing out of it. His jokes are terrible like his teaching and grading. He lied to the class and did not give us a curve. If bio 200 is the only class you are taking, then maybe you will have a shot at a B.
He makes the class more difficult than it should be. He doesn't understand that the class = non-bio majors. Def. study and read everything. His lectures don't cover a fifth of what's on the exam.
This class is difficult... but he did curve the class last semester. I definitely should have failed this course, but due to the last minute curve I passed with a C. Best of luck to you all, don't miss an extra credit.. fyi...
okay so here's the skinny-- yah the class is hard but its bio so what did you expect. the curve gave me a B, DON'T EVER MISS CLASS. xcred is crucial. to study for the tests don't do flashcards or anything cuz those don't help at all-- READ THE LAB MANUAL. he writes the manual so it helps so so much for the tests. GOOD LUCK LOVES
I don't know why Gary gets such a bad rep! He is a very nice guy, a great teacher, and he makes a boring subject interesting. He gives a lot of opportunity for in class extra credit, that can boost you a full letter grade. So go to class, do your labs, and you should have no problem with this class. I didn't even buy the book and still got an A!
He's SUPER hard! DO NOT underestimate his tests. In the beginning he goes through the material pretty quickly so do reading or go to office hours if you don't completely get it. You really need to go to every lab and ALWAYS be early to class.Sometimes if you're 1 min late you won't get xtra credit. Seriously go above and beyond to study
For a 5th yr English major, this class was HARD. Labs are really helpful, as are lectures - but the tests are still very challenging. Still, Shin achieves his goal You WILL LEARN biology. And his lectures are a pleasure - he had our class dying of laughter. Read before class, sit in the front row, be engaged, and everything will be fine.
The materials are difficult! I mean, its BIO. Your learning 1-3 ch per class so its speedy. Be on TIME! Materials suck, but Gary is awesome! He tries to give a clear lecture through powerpoints, pictures, and random videos. You will def laugh in class cause he tries to be funny. Awesome professor, but BIO SUCKS, hands down. Take Gary!
Gary is the best, biology isn't;but he is HILARIOUS and not only do you learn, you get a free comedy show! Tests are hard/sometimes tricky, labs are incredibly helpful, and Gary is always willing to answer questions. Notes online as well as power points. Oh, and I'm giving him a chili pepper cause he asked for one :) TAKE HIM!!
Gary was an amazing Biology teacher. He makes bio really fun and I'm not just saying that! Gary is an all around good person who really WAKES YOU UP through his lectures. He's funny, talks a lot about his family and kids which is hilarious. He's a Gemini but a FUNNY one, not a crazy one. Take this class! I actually didn't skip..hahaha!! =]
He definitely made the lectures really fun and interesting to learn about Bio. I'm an art major and struggled a lot in his class but, after taking Gary's class, I can truly say that science is awesome :)
Like any other class Bio takes work, but Gary makes it easy to learn. His comments, humor and relatable stories make the information "stick". I came into Bio 200 with zero knowledge about the world around me, but now all I see are the things I have learned in this class. Gary made Biology fun !
Gary is hilarious! Even though you might not be interested in bio you still gotta take the class right? Most professors with their PHD's will talk down to you but Gary talks to you at your level and adds in a few comic reliefs. If you take this class make sure you take him for your lab it will definitely help you out!
Gary is cool and funny but this class requires a lot of studying. Attendance isn't required but helps a LOT. 4 exams + final. 50 MC ?s each. He makes practice tests and study guides for each chapter but the tests are still hard (average grade on the exams was ~65%). But the labs/extra credit bring up your grade a lot and he curves the final grades at the end of the semester. I had an 86% and he gave me an A. This class is hard, but Gary does a lot to help out his students. I would recommend him.
All these previous comments are true because Gary is funny and is always able to help students out with understanding the material. Personally I thought the class was easy...my advice to students is to study lecture notes, lab manual and practice exams mostly, this is what helped me get an A in the class. The textbook is just for reference.
This proff is ridiculously difficult. It's to the extent that at one point of semester I checked my book to see if it was the right one because the material he teaches in class is not in the textbook. The textbook assigned to this class is so watered down compared to what is expected to be known for the exams. This proff is also highly paranoid...
I only read bad reviews for Shin, but so did he. So he has become concerned about making the class more approachable to students. He makes you realize that Bio is actually relevant and interesting. Memorize vocab to make concepts easier to understand, study the lab manual(helps so much on tests),and don't wait til the last minute to study-seriously
Avoid this class at all costs. Tests are extremely hard, & there is so much info to know for each test (8 ch per test) It's difficult for someone who doesn't have a background in bio to get all these concepts at once. He is funny, but that is the only positive about this class. Class averages are 50%. Each lectures cover 2-3 ch at a time. Terrible.
This class was extremely easy. Gary's lectures are very entertaining and he makes it very easy to pass this class. If you can't pass this class then you must be incredibility stupid.
He is a pretty good professor, He knows his information and is very helpful. I would recommend his class. Remember what you put into the class is what you will receive as a letter grade. The class is not that hard you simply just need to study for it.
Dr. Shin is a great professor. He knows that the class is hard and works to make the class easier. He is always willing to help if you ask for it. The class was 4 test (60% of grade, weekly hw and lab quizzes. (40% of grade). If you read the book and lab manual you will be fine for hw and quizzes. Study lectures for test! Great prof! Curved class.
Tests cover 6-8 chapters at a time. Class average ranged 50-60. Which isnt too bad because he curves. Weekly HW time consuming, but its an easy A,& helps boost final grade. Lectures are entertaining, & the material is easy to understand. Study & dedicate time to this class and getting a B is easy. Go to class and study, you cant be lazy.
Gary is great! He really loves what he teaches & makes learning easier. its important to remember that Biology is a hard subject but i think gary did a great job of explaining things & making it interesting. He was available during his office hours & after lec to answer Q's. There are 3 exams, Aplia HW (its easy and free points), & lab quizzes
Never went to class and pulled a C because he curves. Test averages are about 50%. I suggest reading the book and going to lab because that is way more helpful. Also, do the homework, it's time consuming but it will boost your grade if it's complete and done well.
taking this class right now and i love it. lectures are alwayssss interesting, come to lecture and youll be fine! tests are curved. and i have a really high A right now
Gary is one of the best bio professors I've had, he makes lecture interesting and funny, the test are super curved, all you have to do is keep up and do your aplia homework and go to lab. Don't listen to the negative ratings they obviously didn't study enough.
I'm going to miss this guy. He's hilarious and makes class enjoyable by bringing interesting stories and facts. He reminds us why we need a little bio knowledge in our lives. Ends his semester with a valuable lesson.
He is a funny guy but to be honest his grading is very unfair. He says straight up he grades hard and it is very true. I studied and did all my hw and applia assignments and the lab and didn't pass. He may be funny in person but when it comes to grading don't believe he will be easy on you. Avoid taking him if you don't have to.
Very hard class, with the curve its not hard to get a C. Getting higher than a C is the challenge as the curve doesnt help u then. I'll be honest, his lectures are not as helpful as the textbook, he breezes through all the material in lecture with little clarity. It was rare to see half of the class in attendance. Class averages on exams are 50s.
very difficult , very detailed. his grading is a bit easy but his scrutiny is insane.
I usually hate science class, they're not my forte at all. But I LOVED gary's class! It was so fun and the information was so interesting and he's pretty funny. Yes, the class is hard, but biology is a hard subject in general, so don't think this will be a walk in the park. He makes the class more fun to go too.
I took this class over the summer, and I must say it is the best course I have taken at CSULB. He makes the material interesting by a lot of jokes. The labs are really fun, just read the lab manual and lab notes for quiz. Online homework is will help you on the test and it's easy. The exams are very similar to the study guides he gives out.
His class is very interesting and detail and I recommend everyone to go to class because it helps you understand the material more. Yes the class is hard you have to study. My friends complain how hard the class is but they don't even pay attention in class so that's why. I got a B in the class because I didn't finish the homework. Good luck every1
Easy class! If people arent getting at least a B in here its kind of sad. He practically gives you the answers to his test. Dont bother with the book. Read all his power point slides and study guides for each chapter. Memorize those since this class is pure facts. I am not an A+ student at all, but I got an A in this class. Really simple/interesting
Don't be fooled by the green and blue faced rating by the others. I absolutely enjoyed Gary and how he taught this class. I hate science, but how he approaches the subject is difficult not to get into. Exams are NOT difficult if you study. You have to TRY to fail. Take him if you can!
Definitely fun class! I'd recommend it! Learned the most interesting things. He curves so test shouldn't be a problem, but i'd recommend studying. If you go to lab and do the aplia, you should be good to go. Pretty chill guy and he's funny.
This class is really fun and it teaches you a lot. I cannot rate Gary highly enough. He tries really hard to teach well, and he keeps the class fun with an energetic and funny teaching style. He is a hawtee too! This class may have bad rankings, but thats because of lazy students who arent used to studying for a class. Study, youll be fine
He can't teach. I got a D in his class. TOO HARD, bad lectures
Good tone during his lectures and he's funny which makes it enjoyable. However, he tends to put in too much of his personal opinion when he teaches which sometimes is annoying.
His lectures are pretty good, but the majority of the class seems to do bad on his exams. It really shouldn't be too hard to at least pass the class. He's funny at times, but sometimes the class feels vulgar.
Great Guy! He makes lectures really interesting and he is a pretty funny guy. If you really do bad in the exams try to do good in the HW and Lab quizzes which will help out. A lot of people say it is hard but if you really STUDY then you will do good. You should definitely study the PowerPoints that he goes over lecture. Those are really helpful!
Gary Shin is a pretty cool professor. He makes the class and interesting and he is pretty funny. This class isn't really that difficult since there are homework and quizzes to cushion the exams. There's about 4 exams and if you study from the powerpoint you'd probably get a B. He curves it a lot so this class overall is not too bad.
It makes it a lot easier if you show up to class and listen because he makes the material very interesting. Good sense of humor, entertaining class, but you definitely need to study for his tests. I just study the lecture slides online and I get good grades from those. I didn't even buy the book.
Great Professor. He keeps you engaged in the class with his sense of humor. Tries to relate things to his students, so it makes it a lot easier to understand. Took him for Summer 2012 and even though we had to go everyday, it wasn't hard at all. Tests are not made to be tricky, but to see what you've learned. I recommend him.
awesome professor recommend to anyone without a good background in biology. Those who like bio should take him just to learned a thing or two about biology. Overall, the best and hottest bio teacher. There are extra credits, he curved and easy points in lab and smart-work. You can't fail the class. Its impossible.
Thank you Gary! So glad this guy teaches a class that can be so dry and boring, but he makes it insanely interesting&funny. Getting a B is VERY Do-able with moderate effort. Do your HW, go to labs, and STUDY for lecture. Curves like crazy! Go to lecture! Its like stand up comedy. Study - or else you will fail, plain and simple
Great teacher, really keeps you interested in aspects that you wouldn't think twice about. Just do your online hw and online lab quizzes to the best of your ability since they are easy points. For tests, focus primarily on the lecture slides and notes taken. Got C's on first three tests and a B on the last test , giving me an A in the class (curve)
The professor is a bit helpful when introducing the material. He makes a lot of childish jokes to get a laugh. Really full of himself, he includes too much of his personal opinion. Takes things personally, such as nodding off in class or having a phone out. Incoming students are advised to read and study often due to the amount of info to remember.
Pretty funny guy, his teaching is pretty much from the powerpoint, but he makes it intresting enough to grab your attention. (I didn't realize this point until we had a substitute, and then i learned to appreceiate his lectures.) Some of his jokes do get old pretty quick tho. His tests are easy as long as you study.
I had him for lab and lecture and his labs always let out early and lectures were interesting. Very helpful if you go to office hours. Some people think he's rude but he just wants to people to pay attention if they come to the lecture. Three midterms and the final is not cumulative. Study his slides and coming to lectures helps a lot for tests.
Wonderful professor! I had Dr. Shin for the lecture and the lab. It is pretty hard to fail his class, even if you fail every exam but do good in lab and hw (smartwork) you will be fine! Shin is a great professor who makes the class fun and jokes around.
My best advice to you is to recored the lectures , go home , listen to the recording and make meticulous notes on the power points. Right before an exam listen to them once more in a row. I got an A this way. It's pretty easy and I learned a lot. It also shows that he is a good teacher and not just another guy with a PhD
you must absolutely study/pay attention if you dont everything will go down hill .take power points to class and right notes then review them at home and you will do fine . Dont slack on the Quiz's from the labs or the homework
He's really funny in lecture. He's a nice guy, but his test are pretty tricky. You really have to study to know it. Like really really really study. You can't put if off until the last minute. test are only 60% of the grade so its not that bad. He curves so much on the test its ridiculous. Make sure you do all your labs/homework. Super easy points!
Funny guy, and tries to make students interested in the subject by telling funny stories. However, the tests and homework/quizzes are poorly worded and not as clear as they can and should be. Multiple instances where I knew the answers but got it wrong because the questions made you believe it was another answer choice that wasn't correct.
if the class average 50-60 percent... maybe the students arent the problem..
Dr. Shin is one of the best professors I have had at CSULB. He has such an enthusiastic class and the humor to keep the class lively. Very straightforward and overall just a fun class. You won't regret taking him!
Professor Shin is a wonderful professor. He makes learning fun and he's very humorous. I had him for both lecture and lab and I highly recommend taking him for lab. His class can be difficult if you don't study. Put some time into reading and use his study guides!!! Quiz and labs are easy points that will boost your grade.
Ask your friends for the test because you can take the test home. Easy B.
where to start. well he think his lecture story that he probably practices before the test to get the jokes right will be enough to understand his stupid test that have upper division ques. with quantum mechanics. Couple of advises i can give is, grow up and teach from a book and forget your stupid story. his class avg is always below 50,pathetic
He knows what he is talking about and it helpful in understanding the material. Since it is general bio, he covers a broad spectrum of topics but makes them interesting. 4 tests, weekly homework, and weekly labs,
first test: 44% second test: 84% third test:76% final:78% Smart Work:84% Lab:85% Overall Grade: B. Tough class. MIGHTbe able to get a C wo reading but must show up and pay attn. I showed up-didnt really pay attention, read IN DETAIL, memorized (ALWAYS a lot of memorization) and did okay. No studying my 44% on 1 test. TESTS BASED HIGHLY OFF BOOK.
Class is pretty easy. Here are a few tips to get at least a B: 1. Attend the lectures. Some of the test questions are based off of what he says. 2. Read the book. It's only around 20 pages every chapter. I highlighted and stuff and I just reviewed that and his study guides before the test.
Go to every lecture, go to every lab, make flash cards, and study the practice tests. First test I got a 26% because I didn't take it seriously. Talking to him helps AND sitting in the front every day helps as well. You can pass the class if you try hard enough. He curves A LOT at the end of the semester, without that curve I would of failed.
This class wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination, but if you do the work you will pass. He tells you exactly what is expected to you on the first day and stays true to that throughout the semester. The tests are pretty tough, but all of the other assignments can be completed open-book so the grades balance out pretty well.
This class is supposed to be for non science majors, but the material he teaches is extremely specific and detailed. The tests are the hardest tests I've ever taken. The class average for just the first test was a D-. I read every page of every chapter on the test and still had to guess on every question. Don't take this class you will regret it.
He tries way too hard to be funny and it ends up making the lectures longer and more boring. All he does is read powerpoints. The tests are really tough. He basically expects everyone to treat this class as their only class. Don't take this class. Do anything you can to avoid it. If you take it you will immediately regret it.
This class is pretty hard, so you have to REALLY study. He curves at the end of the semester though. Class average for every test was usually around a 60-65%. Make sure you do the homework and lab quizzes because that is what will save your grade.
His class isn't as hard as some of these reviewers claim it to be. Just attend his lectures and read the book and you'll be fine. If you put in the effort, the class isn't difficult. I basically reviewed his study guides and read the book and got A's and high B's on the tests. He curves at the end too. The labs and online hw boost your grade.
This class is difficult because of the huge amount of material that is covered, but if you pay attention in class, study the practice exams, and actually read the book you'll get an A. There are 4 exams total (including the final which isn't cumulative) 50 multiple choice questions. And the class is curved.
This is for sure a difficult class, not so much the subject itself but the way the tests are worded is what's tricky. Pay attention to all the small details that you "think" won't be on the test because they will be!! Record the lectures, do the homework and lab quizzes and you too can get an A like i did. Great professor, made class interesting.
Those who complained that the professor is not good, is probably the lazy students who does nothing. First off, the class is not easy nor hard, you need to read the book, pay attention to the lecture (even the smallest details) and study your heads off. He curves at the end. Funny professor!!!
Take good notes, record the lecture (helpful), read the book, do well on your quizzes and homework, and most importantly do well on the test. Professor Shin was hilarious and class is not hard, only tricky if you do not read the book and powerpoint lecture. I manage to get an A, which was shocking. I recommend this professor!
Class is easy nor hard, study & you'll be fine. Do show up to class because he explains everything pretty well & what he expects you to know on the exams. Other than exams, there is hw, lab quizzes (mandatory attendance), & extra credit he gives for those assessments at the beginning and end of the semester (+10pts)! Lotsa points... easy pass :)
Gary Shin is tight.
He goes through his lectures waaayyyyy too fast! we basically have to teach everything ourselves.
One of my favorite professors! Posts everything on Beach Board; lecture powerpoints, study guides for each chapter, and practice tests. Lectures are entertaining because he relates it to everyday life. Attendance is mandatory for lab and there is only a little homework. He gives you all of the tools you need to get an A, if you choose to use them.
Professor Shin was a great professor, and he will help you if he sees you are trying your absolute best in this course. I will admit the exams are a bit tough, but if you give yourself enough time to study and ask him questions they are doable. He is a great lab instructor as well, and the lab quizzes and h/w assignments helped me with my grade!
It's difficult to bag on a professor that is passionate about his job. I'm actually awake during lectures. For success on the exams: TAKE YOUR TIME TO READ THE PROBLEMS. It is easy to overlook the small details in each question. Pay attention and you will do well. The class is also curved at the end. Doesn't get better than that.
This class was a true battle for me. I got F's on all three exams and a C on the final. I got a B in the smartwork(homework section) and a C in the lab portion and with the class curve I received a C in the class. What an awesome professor! Even though the class was brutal, his lectures and stories made my day! Study for those tests!
It would be extremely hard to fail this class, its easy to get a C if that's what you are looking for, but in order to get an A you have to work very hard. Study his notes to memory and read the textbook! he expects a little too much from non-majors.
Shin has a great personality. There was never a dull moment in his class. If you go to all the lectures and labs and read the textbook, you will be fine. The tests are super tough and tricky, however. Smartwork quizzes are a piece of cake and he allows up to 20 points extra credit through iclicker questions. Replies to emails & posts grades quickly
The best ever, easy A class. makes bio fun.
I completed all of my homework, got a 80% or above on every lab quiz, and attended every class and I got a C. The tests are really challenging and I got a D average on them. The class is not impossible to pass and I could have done better if I studied more for the tests. If you struggle w/ science don't take this class, there are easier GE classes
don't take advantage of his optional lectures, they're so helpful and makes the topic interesting. you can't fail the hw if you spend the time on it and for the lab quizzes the manual has all the answers. The only hard part are his tests which he gives hints on in lecture and curves at the end of the year. I look forward to his lectures every week.
Expected an easy class, unpleasantly surprised to find out it was not as easy as a GE normally is. He has tough tests even with going to every single lecture. Make sure to utilize his study guides and practice exams.
His exams are brutal, but if you utilize his practice exams and study guides, you should do fine on them. I look forward to attending his lectures even though it was an 8AM bc his stories and lectures always made my day. I'm not going to lie, it is a hard GE class and there are probably easier classes, but he made the class so fun that I didnt care
This class was one of the more time-consuming courses I have had this semester. Online homework due before lectures. Tests are moderate to really hard (depends on how much you study for this class). He offers slides, study guides, and other very useful things on BB. Use all resources to get at least a B. Study every day, and you will get an A.
If you go to class and study you're gonna pass. The study guide material was reflective of the exam. HW is easy. Took me 30-45 min/assignment. He says jokes and they are pretty funny. Make's the class not as boring as biology would normally be. Definitely recommend him as a professor.
Worth it to go to every lecture; he told interesting stories and gave random trivia every lecture. Not the easiest tests you have ever taken but it is supplemented with homework and lab points which you are pretty much guaranteed 100 on (if you do them).Labs are simple and straightforward as well. Overall, I highly recommend. #garyisawesome
Not bad. Professor Shin is hilarious and makes lectures pretty interesting. You decide whether you want to make this class easy or impossible to pass. All you have to do is complete all assignments asked of you. For this semester we had weekly online HW due before each class, lab quizzes, and 4 exams. There was extra credit. I highly recommend!
Definitely not an easy A. You do have to work for it. Weekly lab quizzes which are pretty straight forward. Weekly online homework assignments which require you to read the chapter and answer questions. Very easy to get 100 on lab quizzes and homework. Tests are more difficult but if you study and work for it, you should be fine.
Okay Gary is probably one of the coolest teachers I've ever had. Don't judge him based on the people who got a bad grade in his class. Read the people who actually got an A cuz they know what to do. He's funny, smart, and passionate about biology. His tests aren't the easiest but you can still get an A if you do all the hw and lab quizzes He curves
Shin's class is tough but passable. He's a nice guy and his lectures are pretty fun and definitely help with tests, of which there are 4, all non-cumulative. MAKE SURE you complete all the online quizzes and go to lab, those easy points will boost your grade big time. I got around 75% on all the tests but passed with a B.
Material can be tough, but Gary lectures great and he is funny; he randomly told us stories/trivias related to the material, which made it fun and helped us learn. High Recommended.
This class is NOT an easy A. Gary is super funny and his lectures are awesome. All of his lectures are posted on BeachBoard so honestly if you skip a couple days it wont really affect you as much. Read the book, dont skip labs(those are worth points), and do all of the HW. BTW he does curve test but you need to do the work to get an A
Great lectures, incredible professor. Like any science class, you have to study to do well on tests. He provides tons of great study guides and practice tests though. Never opened the textbook. Not even once. Save your money. His lectures, powerpoint slides (posted), study guides, and the internet are all you need. DO THE HOMEWORK, study, get A.
Gary was a cool guy. The tests were hard, but if you go to the lectures and do the homework you'll do fine. Ask your lab TA questions because they always want to help you!
Hes a great guy. I took this class 5 years ago & I remember it all. Super professor.
This is a class that is crucial to your progression and GPA. Please do yourself and make sure you find a kinder better qualified professor. Shin does not know how to manage his classes and falls behind on covering materials that are on the exams. This is a kindly reminder to make sure IF you have to take this professor, make it your last resort!!!!
