Not the best professor I've had, he expects you to know everything he covers as if your a biology major. He is a hard professor, don't take him, he tends to make jokes that aren't really that funny, when I asked questions I felt intimidated. He likes to brag about how hard his test are. You are better of with a different professor.
I disagree. Probably the best professor I have ever had in terms of helping me understand a very difficult subject (for me). All you need to do is study for the class and the materials Prof. Shin provided. But I suppose that would be too much to ask for someone in a college-level class.... And also, he is funny. Had me in stitches a few times.
i really like professor Shin. he is so passionate about teaching Biology and it radiates! he's funny, enthusiastic and easy going. i would definitely recommend this class,
Prof. Shin is a great teacher. His tests may be a little hard, but if you study you will do well. He's very helpful, funny and passionate about his subject. His classes are fun and you are encouraged to ask any random question and not feel stupid.
His tests are hard, but if you study you will do fine. Prof. Shin is a very funny guy which makes the class fun. You can ask anything and you wont feel stupid. Great great great teacher! Totally recommend him.
Best Bio Teacher so Far. Very clear and knows alot of random interesting facts that really engage you in the lecture. Its never a drag to go to this class. totally recommend him
Funny teacher!! His lectures are funny and intuitive but he provides a bit of comic relief as his voices crack from time to time. He rushes through the powerpoint sometimes and his labs don't offer much help although it is fun sometimes. The tests are difficult and you really have to study to get a good understanding but he is fair. Take his class
Great Teacher, Test are not too difficult but should be fairly easy if you study; I highly recommend taking his class, labs are easy and his class is very entertaining
Dr. Gary Shin is a smart man who teaches at ucla and csulb, and it shows when he teaches with an interesting narrative or a funny joke (which makes the whole class crack up) and relates it back as an analogy to the lesson. Biology is not an easy subject but his teaching methods can interest you quickly. Highly recommended no matter what major!
He loves Bio, it's obvious! He really cares about his student's success and is willing to give to extra credit! If majority of the class bombs a test, he curves grades. All you NON bio majors out there ~ I RECOMMEND!!!
Awesome teacher!I never looked at the clock, anxious for class to end. He always lets lab out early, usually lecture, too. If you do the practice tests from blackboard, the tests are easy. Then if you do bad on those, he curves the class ridiculously. People with C's ended with A's. Kinda wish I hadn't studied so much. Not needed. I got a 94%.
He's very funny but still goes over what's needed
Not going to lie. This class was very tough. You definitely need to put in time to study. His tests are super tough. He try to make the lecture as clear as possible. He integrates funny stories into his lectures which was helpful. I recommend his class if you have to take bio 101. He does give 100 points for attendance, and also 100 for a paper.
You can tell hes passionate about Biology but if you just want to pass the class for credit, this class is definetly not for you.
This class was a little tough but I can easily say it was the best class I have ever taken. Dr Shin is very intelligent and passionate about biology. He made lecture easy and fun to understand! He is a great professor and I've learned so much, considering my lack of interest for the subject. Tests are tough but STUDY. Take him you wont regret it!!
Bio is not an easy subject so be prepared to work! Gary is a funny, chill, laid back professor but his tests are hard asf! I would suggest using all the resources he gives such as the practice exams, lecture notes, and study guides. if you really study and understand the class will be a breeze, but you HAVE to take out time to study!
Gary Shin is a really nice guy and also very funny! This class is not easy though. Tough tests and lots of work!
Mr. Shin is an amazing teacher. He really makes you put in the work to earn the A. His lectures are always very entertaining and he makes biology interesting to learn. I highly recommend him, one of the best professors I have ever had.
If you are thinking about taking this professor and you are ok with reading then I highly recommend Gary. He is a fun outgoing professor and makes the class a blast to take. If you use the lectures and study well then you will do fine. He has a great sense of humor and I would take him again.
The class is tough but he makes it worth while, I passed the class without even opening a textbook just study hard for all the test and pop quizzes and you'll do fine
AMAJING!! 10/10 WOULD TAKE BIO AGAIN. CLASS IS HARD I MAY HAVE TOO. BUT I ENJOYED EVERY FAILING GRADE.
To start off, he is an AMAZING teacher. If your considering taking him, DO IT. Second, the 50 point tests do not affect your grade. I got a D on one test it brought me down 1% in the class, I got an A on another, it didn't bring me up at all. GET AN A on the quizzes, this is what effects your grade, but they are online so its not bad. Great class!!
Shin is AMAJING! His lectures are always on point and even when the material itself is boring, his stories keep class interesting. I started the class with zero interest in Bio besides needing to pass and somewhere along the way I became really interested! However, this isn't an easy class, you definitely need to put in the work for the grade!
He's my favorite professor of all time! He's very funny and so into BIO that it made the class more enjoyable, especially for a 5 unit class! There's no hw other than studying for tests/quizzes! Highly expect to read the book and can't afford to miss both lecture and lab; the tests are very difficult! Overall I would so take this course again!!!
Gary is such an awesome professor and I highly respect him. He made biology fun for me with amazing stories and jokes to match! His tests are difficult but its a very passable course if you at least try. And its very easy to move up the ranks if you wanted to try harder. Definitely take this course during the summer! It's tedious but so worth it!
Shin is an an amazing professor; I took him for the 5 week course over summer. It's a lot more packed info and you have to REALLY work for an A. Like 15 hrs of studying a week for an A but a B is definitely doable. He makes the tests hard and pretty detailed but lectures are great so just pay close attention. SO FUNNY! He makes the class interestig
Great professor, I'd take him again. 3 exams and 5 discussions. I didn't use the text book but utilized the lecture slides well. he is a solid choice. you must take good noted and study.
A very good man, respected and knows what he is talking about. my first B ever because the material was a little hard but managed. did NOT use the book. I would take him again for sure. good luck
So off topic. You will get lost with his lectures. I do not recommend him
Truly a PHENOMENAL professor. He makes Biology extremely interesting to learn and his class is very enjoyable. His class is not easy but if you put in the work and effort you will pass. Focus on the quizzes because they are very easy points. Overall, an amazing class and would highly recommend taking the class with Gary.
Shin was a nice guy but gets off topic way too much with personal stories. The class is very difficult and requires a lot of effort to pass. He made it clear he wants the best for his students and will do whatever he can to help. The class is nothing but exams, quizzes and a paper. He was alright but not the greatest people make him out to be.
He is soo funny!!! and he is an amazing teacher and he is very helpful as well! His tests are straight to the point and there are no trick questions. Just read the book and follow the study guides and you're good to go! His classes and labs are a lot of fun. It made me more comfortable learning in his class! and make sure you show up to class!
He's very hard. If I were you guys I would take Professor Stephanie Cocca. She is awesome, gives extra credits, she gives a group project that is worth 200 points it helped me pass w/ a C, classwork only, but no homework. I recommend taking Stephanie Cocca. Don't take Gary Shin, he's funny but he does not give points for attendance, participation.
This prof has the most monotone voice ever. I only needed this class for credits but it was a living hell to go through. His lectures are really long and lab is even worse. He explains things really decent it's just for the most part their very just straight forward and boring.
The professor is really nice but, mostly gets off topic in his lectures. The lectures are really long and kind of a waste because all the actual information you need is in the book. The class is passable only if you read and study the book at every chance of free time.
Do not take him! Yeah he is funny but is sooo hard. He says there is so much information to over in so little time and that we have to go really fast, however he goes off topic so much!! Telling unrespectful jokes that are not funny, leaving little time for lecture. More than 1/2 the class failed the test and claimed it was our fault.
This class was a challenge for me, but I'm so glad that it was. I have never learned and retained so much in one class. Professor Shin keeps students engaged with eye -opening lectures and of course, his sense of humor. I'm grateful to have been able to take his class.
His class was very difficult, but he's honestly very understanding. I had a family emergency and he was so accomodating in letting me make up an exam. If you put in the work for his class it is very much possible that you can get an A or B, but if you're lazy, don't expect him to just give you the grade. You need to really work for it
Professor Shin is a very funny guy, he makes a lot of jokes but besides that he is horrible. He only assigns 5 small papers for a total of 100 points and 3 exams each 100 points with no extra credit. His class is difficult and on the day of the final he told us all "why did I make this exam so hard" before handing it to us.. would not recommend.
First lecture in class,Gary will tell you how to pass the class. People laugh it off but LISTEN to him.I read the book, took notes, studied the powerpoint. He even gives you hints on what will be on the test. Yes,it was a little challenging but why shouldnt it be?Hes funny and makes the lectures durable. Take the class seriously and dont gaff off.
I'm not a genius and I'm getting an A so far. Just read the material and show up for class and you'll do fine. If you do the work and put in the normal amount of time to study they you'll pass this class. Gary's great.
Makes me come to school
Well, his lectures were funny he is a professor who really needs to lay off the dad jokes but other than that your golden.
Man people fail this class because they don't study it's so easy just read the txt book.
Gary, as we students have called him, is first and foremost a human being of great kindness and zest his class is hard but manageable if you study.
Professor shin does grade heavily and it has affected me negatively but the class is worth it.
SO amazing the lectures are easy but the tests are kinda hard.
His lectures were amazing and Gary is very caring as a professor 10 out 10 would take again.
This class is pretty easy you should pass.
Made some funny noises today. 10/10 would take again
Literally, just do your homework.
He's overqualified & full of inspiring stories/facts. He straight up says he just wants to have fun. It's a very hard class but if you get tutoring and talk to him when you're struggling, you'll stand a chance. He makes many inappropriate jokes but they're usually self-deprecating so no need to get offended. Best professor/mentor ever, hard class.
I went into Bio 101 feeling nervous, because everyone talks about how hard it is. However, Gary actually made bio interesting with his lectures, they won't bore you to death he actually has really interesting stories and makes bio understandable. He gives you study Q's for the exams and literally just do the HW and you will be okay.
Took summer class, extremely hard, only doable if you STUDY! Professor Shin is extremely intelligent, and honest. He is really funny, and humble, will add stories to help you learn the material. If you fail it isn't because he grades hard or he's mean, its because you didn't study. He gives great life advice too! Great Professor, would take again!
Summer Class, loved him as a professor. He is very enthusiastic and wants us to be eager to learn about Biology. He is funny, and fair, makes it easy for us to pass (get above a C). Just do you work, and study. Has so much stories, we get side tracked kind of but it's what makes the class fun, and we learn nc he applies the lessons to real life .
Nice teacher but I'm failing so...
very great teacher, works hard to make sure students understand his lecture as well as homework. His labs also make sure that you understand what was taught in lecture. makes the class very interesting by making jokes that relate to class. uses sound affects
He makes a lot of jokes during his lecture to try and grab your attention. Lectures can feel long but labs are really fun. Understand the material he says during lectures and understand the homework and you should pass. He uses a "learning train" that helps you understand better.
I would definitely may have to take his class again (lol). Biology is a hard class and he makes it easy and fun to learn. He may be scary at first but he is an accessible professor who believes in the capacity of his students. He is willing to help you if you are willing to put the work in.
most chill professor. honestly not that that hard just need to put your work in. he gives you pretty good outlines and study guides for the test.
This professor is honestly a good individual as a person, but tests will bite you in the butt. Although labs don't count for any credit, but is on the exam and is a portion of your chapters tests. Beware you must study the material for a period of time before taking the tests because he goes into detail. Good guy, but too difficult for a GED.
Pre-made lecture notes (called study guides) for every lecture which are super helpful. He doesn't take attendance in lecture but you should go if you want to pass the exams you need to go bc you actually learn! He's a great teacher and explains everything in ways that are easy to understand. 5 exams, Inquisitive homeworks, and one paper.
Hard class because tests are very detailed and has things you might have glanced over in textbook. Great professor, super nice guy. Makes biology fun to learn. Hilarious, talks about his experience in the field-interesting. No papers, no projects. Lectures help. Makes topics easy to understand. 8am class and I was still pumped up for it
His lectures are funny and he is very straight forward and tells you his grading criteria . To Pass his class you need to study, there is no slacking off cause its hard to improve your grade. He does not drop a Test . I just wish that we were still on campus learning cause online Bio is so hard. Im a visual and auditory learner and this sucks.
Gary's a great guy. He's hilarious and he's a very approachable person. He makes lectures funny to keep you engaged. Homework is very easy. However, the exams are tough, but as long as you thoroughly study the study guides that he provides and do the lab worksheets, you should be fine.
Im honestly surprised how many good reviews there are. I dont know if his style is different for 100 but BEWARE. He spends so much time in his lecture trying to tell stories and be funny. He passing rate for the pass years is so low. He asked for feedback why everyone does bad on exams and then came at the class just because he disagreed. DONT
The homework was simple. The issue was his lectures were grueling with him always having stories and other commentaries that honestly really caused me to have to attempt not to drone out the whole lecture. The exams are tough. I would study for hours on end and still ended up failing the class. Be prepared to make this class your top priority.
Gary is the best! You will never be bored in his class, he really connects with his students and puts in a lot of effort. However, be ware his standards are high. He does this because he believes his students are smart enough to meet his standards. His lectures are HILARIOUS but still very informative. Definitely worth the work this semester!
He's brilliant. He wrote the textbook. Witty personality. I enjoyed his lectures. However, if you're not a bio major, BEWARE. There's much easier GE classes. His exams are extremely challenging. I got an A in his class because I did all of the homework and managed to score at least an 80-90% and up on his exams. No extra credit, but curves grades.
BEWARE: if you truly care for learning, I would look for another professor. If you truly care about your grade, I would take another professor. If you truly care for having a great semester, take another professor. The lectures are one thing but exciting, but the fact that he scrutinizes anyone that is past 10 seconds late.. So if you truly care..
I am so bad at math/science but I was able to get an A in this class. He adds jokes within the lectures that makes it a lot easier to watch. My biggest regret was not reaching out to him for help earlier. Don't be scared to reach out to him! Also there is an easy paper on anything bio that has lots of flexibility (so have fun with it!).
I decided to take Mr. shin because of the time his class took place. I should have waited until next semester because I was told that Mr. shin can be extremely tough. Although this class was tough, there was an extra credit paper, it helped my D trn into a C-, I am thankful for that but would have preferred to take anyone else more nice & welcoming
His tests contain 25 multiple choice questions, 10 short answer questions, and 2 essay questions. For the essay questions, you can't even write a complete essay because he doesn't give you enough information. Honestly the hardest class i've taken so far. He also doesn't give any extra credit at all.
His class is HARD. this class should honestly be for bio majors because its way too hard. His exams are proctored but you are able to have notes. He only had some inquizitives and labsters for homework but you have a lot of time to get it done and its pretty easy. Its just the exams man. you gotta study your butt off for a good grade. good luck
This class broke my straight A streak (but I still mightve had the highest grade in the class). The mean score for most exams was a failing grade. You really have to read and understand the material to pass this class. His exams are HARD (and proctored). His good sense of humor makes the lectures more engaging. I do appreciate nature more now.
Despite the bad reviews, Shin is not a hard professor. He tells you everything you need and don't need to know and is very upfront with it. Plus, he gives you practice tests that closely mirror the actual test. The tests are straight out from the lecture; review your notes, and you should be fine. Shin is an easy professor for a hard subject.
Im surprised he doesnt have better reviews. Prof Shin is one of my favorite professors. Hes very caring and available for you for help after classes. His exams are hard but he offers ec to boost your grade. Hes super funny and makes lecture interesting. I took him hybrid. Dont be scared to take him, hes awesome!
This class is one of the hardest GE classes I have taken but Professor Shin tried to make it fun. His online lecture is boring but in real life he is a funny, caring and inspirational teacher. Exams are closed-book but you can bring a reference sheet. There is an essay to boost your grade and he will curve by the end of the semester.
If you are taking his class for GE credit ignore the good reviews because this is a hard class and he knows it. Half the class constantly failed his exams which seemed to amuse him instead of offer more assistance. Never trust a prof who screenshots his Rate My Professor ratings and puts them in the powerpoint on the first day. Very pretentious
tough subject, but good prof, be on time or get called out. two fields trips, but there was only a couple questions about them on the exam, so you arent really punished/rewarded for going or not. labs arent too hard. overall good prof in a hard subject. dont slack off and make an honest attempt and you will pass. i know i did and at least got a C
Gary was a great professor in my opinion. His lectures are fun and entertaining and covers everything you need for the exams in his lectures. All you have to do is do the reading and actually try to understand the material and the study guides he provides for you.
Gary's a very funny, relatable guy with lots of cool stories that he tells during classes (which I didn't mind!). However, his tests are nothing like the study guides given. The class average for tests were between 60-70%, so good luck trying to study for them. Also, he reads these comments out loud during classes, so hi Gary!
Gary is a funny guy and he tried to make his lectures fun by incorporating different teaching methods. However his study guides aren't even closely related to the exams. His exams are all about lectures which isn't bad because he allows 1 cheat sheet front and back to use during the exam.
Took his class during the summer, and based on what I heard, I think it's easier than taking it during the semester, add to taking a lot of very good notes, but since we get cheat sheets, I could down everything in very very small handwriting, and the HW takes FOREVER even with Quizlet, but it's manageable. I recommend taking his summer class trust
Lecture heavy and you really need to read the text if you want to succeed in class. Professor is funny and shares anecdotes and analogies that will help you remember things for the exam. Class structure, exams, labs, hw are all very organized.
Summer course, kind of hard. The course itself is hard because of the dense wordy concepts it has. Thankfully, the way Gary formatted the class was that you could pass somewhat easily if you do the work and do decently on the tests. Lecture is long, but he chimes in with funny stories and jokes to keep it entertaining. Don't study the study guide.
professor shin is funny and a chill guy. even though the subject is heavy, he shows effort in wanting u to succeed. his lecture point out imp details for you. but you have to put in the work with the study guides and lecture. labs r fun and interactive
He slammed a trash can onto my desk during our break to tell me i needa stay awake in class even tho i was awake the whole time i just put my head down for the break. Also he would confront me during breaks about being late 10 minutes late saying "do you just not care?", but people would do the exact same thing or not even show up and he ignored it.
really funny guy. practice exams are useful. definitely recommend taking him.
Took Prof Shin's winter course for environmental science. His lockdown browser tests are pretty hard but open book, so I recommend taking notes of the lectures (sometimes asks questions on only lecture stuff). Quizzes are easier. The homework is a lot of writing (essays with multiple paragraphs). He's passionate, but monotone, put him on 1.5x speed
Funny lectures that uses posted lecture slides. Each lecture you can gamble for extra credit by answering a hard question. Assigns a 1000 word research paper that he claims he doesn't usually give
I loved this class. I've never taken a biology class before, but I learned a lot. If you do all the homework, you only need to get like 56% on the tests to pass the class.
my fav part was his application of bio to real, current world events. like i didnt know electric vehicles were worse ?! or people barely eat this fish now because fisheries depeleted their resources that bad ?!? amajing. take him. lots of the hw and exam rely on the readings but it isn't hard to juggle if you organize your time.
