the class is challenging but he is a good teacher
He's a character, but the best guy you can have teach you!!!
If i can take any other courses with him, I will. He's good at explaining, patient, and he doesnt' mind going back to basics to fill in knowledge gaps you may have.

mmmmmmmmkay, mkay, mkay (south park teacher)
he is a really good teacher. if you dont understand the material, he will continue going over it until you get it. he made a would-be challenging class fairly easy
great teacher. very challenging class. Gary will stop class and re-explain everything until everyone knows what is going on. awesome guy
Hes a super nice guy. He goes out of his way to teach. His tests are usually shorties, if you mess up you really mess up
He is known all over campus as the man to get you thru the course. Sit up front in his class, he will notice if you might be a little lost. He will go over it in another way just to get you to understand. GET him for this class!
he makes even the hard stuff simple!
Super nice guy, patient and very helpful. I would rate him 10.00 for a 5.00 scale :)
GREAT PERSON! VERY UNDERSTANDING AND HELPFUL, ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND MATERIAL. I WOULD DEFINETELY TAKE HIM AGAIN
Excellent professor!! Very helpful!! I would recommend taking him
Very nice guy and has a little bit of a sense of humor. He explains things very well. I really don't like statistics, but he managed to make it somewhat interesting. I highly recommend him.
I dislike statistics very much and still don't really understand standard deviation but he was a very good teacher. Definitely explains things with the intent to make you understand. Always ask questions. He loves to say mkay! Count just for fun!
TAKE THIS CLASS. Professor Smith is awesome. As long as you show improvement from test to test you will pass. He curves everything at the end. You can use note cards on exams. Get the Target Copy Notes before you start the class. Makes everything 10x easier.
Dude is real cool. Thought he was a super nice guy... so Mr. Smith if you read this, I appreciate you making the class atmosphere comfortable! I wish more teachers were like this,if I was a teacher I'd take pride in the students actually enjoying me as a person instead of despising me some teacher
This is the guy to take for stats very easy class, reviews the heck out of everything before he continues. I rarely went to class and got an A. Do the homework before the tests and check your answers with the Target Packet, and make sure you understand it. That's how you get an A.
He is a great teacher. He reviews almost every class and works out lots of problems so you know what you are doing. Get the target packets and do the homework and you will get an A. I would take one of his classes again.
First of all this class alone is easy. Second this guy is really easy. HE spends however much time reviewing the material and makes sure eveyrone udnerstands it. Tests are easy if u spend very little time studying his easy target packets. He helps you if you need it. Great guy.
Great guy. Makes this confusing class incredibly easy.
Cool Teacher! Very knowledgable in his area of expertise. Knows the material VERY well, very eager to help his students, and always trying to do his best to teach the material so his students understand it well. He should be FSU's "Teacher of the Year"!
All you have to do is work through and understand the problems that he assigns in the target packet and you wil be fine!
Best Prof for QMB. Also faculty advisor for the finance club. Great Prof, will do all he can to help. Just come to class, get the target copy notes, and read the power points. The target copy notes are very helpful. He's a great Prof!
Very cool guy. Make sure he knows your name and who you are, you will not regret it when it comes time for grading. Just show up to class every once in a while and you will pass
Great teacher, very helpful
Great teacher! Very helpful--- makes sure you grasp the concepts. Test aren't very hard. Just do the problems in the target copy and you'll ace the tests.
Great teacher, very willing to help. Definitely visit him in his office, very very helpful. Make sure to do the homework problems ahead of time, tests are still kind of hard even though he gives a note card.
It's a statistics class. You've taken one, you've taken them all, just different applications. He knows his stuff and all you need to do is pay attention and have a TI-83 handy. Kind of a monotone and he lets a little spittle leave his mouth sometimes. Good guy though and socializes with students before class. Cool in my book.
Gary Smith is a nice person, but his lectures are boring and his tests are hard. You would be better off taking someone else if you want an easy A.
The nicest professor I have met in FSU. He really cares about his students, and I‘ve never met anyone so patient like him. Take his class; he is the best in the department.
Smith goes over in class the problem types that will be on the exams. He also makes a Target packet with how to do every kind of problem. Going to class isn't entirely necessary, if you have the Target packet. He is very helpful in and out of class, and lets students use a formula card. It is pretty easy to get an A.
He is a nice guy, but his tests are real hard even though you get a note card. Class is a waste of time cause he goes over the powerpoints and problems from the target packet that you could do yourself.
He is a great teacher; he is very personable with his students. He is considerate about when to schedule tests, not scheduling them when he will be out of town the day before. He is always available for tests. The only reason his tests may be hard are if you decide to skip a lot. You should go to class because he gives many helpful examples!
This is a business statistics class. If you know stats, you can ace this class. Lectures are very drawn out, and I would say 30% of kids in the class actually went. Mr Smith is personable, loves fsu athletics, and is one of the friendliest PEOPLE I've ever met. You will need the book, and get the notepacket early. Very straightforward, no tricks.
Great teacher! Really helps you out if you show you care about his class. He cares to help you as a person first, and as a student second.
One of the nicest professors at FSU, really cares about students! Go to class everyday or you'll fall behind. Practice problems in order to do well on exams - only downside is that there are only 4 exams with no curves so if you mess up on one or two it can hurt your semester grade :( Highly recommend this professor though!
Must purchase book and Target Packets. Subject matter isn't all that interesting, but hey it's Statistics. Smith helps his students and makes it as interesting as possible.
While the subject matter can be boring if you don't like statistics, he is still a really nice guy. Allows you to fit as many notes and you can on a 3x5 notecard to bring to the exam. Only 4 exams so you should come to class every day to keep up with the information.
He is a nice guy, but he teaches to himself. He starts teaching and then goes into his own world. Half the class does not know what he is talking about, but he still keeps going. You have to keep up with the work for the exams. Do not take it unless it's for your major.
Smith is a stand up Guy. Probably the nicest professor you will meet. He offers 1 on 1 help during office hours and can talk fsu sports with the best. The class itself I did not find useful but it is very important to buy the target packet and book. Test are hard and very detailed but if you study the target packet you will be in good shape!
Nicest teacher I have had so far! Really cares about his students! I thought he was a really great teacher. His reviews for the test really give you a clear idea of what will be on the exam.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He takes an extremely complex topic and breaks it down into very easy to understand chunks. All homework is optional but I would suggest doing it.
Professor Smith is a pretty nice guy. He tries to make the information as easy as possible. BUT- make sure you do all of the HW problems and know the ALL of the conceptual information. (Otherwise his exams will be very tricky.) Just go to class and buy the target packet solutions manuals- you'll be fine.
Smith wasn't a bad professor at all. If you buy the target packets, you'll be set. He's a cute, little old man who is clearly interested in his students. He takes things (almost painstakingly) slow and makes it really easy. 4 tests, note card for each, and sometimes an extra credit opportunity.
Great teacher and guy! Very clear and slow, make sure everyone understands. Going to class really helps. I went every day (you can go to another one of his classes if you miss yours) and didn't buy the target packets and still got an A. Great teacher!
Great guy. Extremely nice and very willing to help. Not to mention, he's extremely thorough. He loves to talk sports, especially when it comes to FSU. TARGET PACKET is GOLDEN!!! Helps an unbelievably great deal.
Gary Smith rocks my world. He is the nicest guy ever and teaches everything you need to know to get a 100% on the test. My advice to help even the best students in the class in go to Tutoring zone because Gary Smith allows you to use a note card and Tutoring zone makes the best notecard for you to use so its impossible to not get an A on each test.
Mr. Smith is probably one of my favorite teachers of all time. This man would sit with me for 2 hrs (during his personal lunch time) just to make sure I understood the material. I didn't get an A or B in his class but I liked him and the class. I recommend taking Mr. Smith... BIG TIME!!!! Great teacher with a big heart. Loves baseball..
Nicest teacher ever! Loves FSU and sports. He would always take time outside of class to help me. Really wants everyone to do well in the class. Loves to talk baseball.
Smith is a REALLY nice guy. Nicer than the other guy who teaches. Go to Tutoring Zone. The guy who does the class (Jon) is insanely good at condensing the information. Gives you a note card that you can use on the exam, too. Really good class.
He is a great teacher. If you get stuck in an early class have no fear because he usually has later sessions you can totally go to instead. His tests are 30 questions and its a bit time crunched in a 55 mins period. If you really want an A GO TO TUTORING ZONE. It is 25 $ but if you don't go you will most likely get a B in the class.
This class kind of takes you by surprise. I thought it was going to be super easy but I ended up scraping by with a B+. He's very nice, and he teaches it well, but he's hard to follow because he's so freaking boring. I'm pretty sure he's the best to take for this class though. You don't really need to go to class if you do tutoring zone.
I was worried the first day because he speaks kinda fast. But the class ended up being a breeze! You only need the book for homework problems. In addition to ppt slides he does LOTS of examples in class, which I found EXTREMELY helpful to understanding the material. For this reason I would say going to class definitely makes tests MUCH easier!
Smith is a great guy and he looooves FSU! Stats is not an easy class by far, but he thoroughly goes over the concepts and examples during class which makes homework a lot easier! Doing the problems is crucial. Be careful with tests because you'll feel like you're running out of time. I failed Bus. Stats. but got a B+ in his class :) Take him!
His teaching methods are by far the cleareast and easiest to follow and understand out of any professor I've had in college (through 3 years). You can tell he has put in the time to figure out the most clear cut way of teaching the material. Take his class, and go to it, because it will make tests 100x easier.
Gary Smith is by far the nicest teacher I have ever met at FSU. He is very helpful if you go to his office. I recommend using TutoringZone. If you are ever in a jam he is willing to work with you. I really enjoyed having him as a teacher.
Very nice teacher, will help if you go to him. But he is pretty monotone, and can get a little boring. Ended up withdrawing from the class :/
He is a very nice and friendly guy but the first couple of weeks I went were so boring so I just stopped going. I did the tutoring zone thing before every test and got an A. Good thing I had friends in the class because they let me know about the 2 extra credit pts he gave. Do what I did and you'll be fine :)
Super sweet guy! Material is not easy. Pretty much Statistics. I never went to class and just went to tutoring zone and got a B.
Awesome guy, I would recommend coming to class and getting there early just to chat with him. Class isnt mandatory and a lot of people do TZ. I used his material w/o TZ and got an A. Dont take this with anyone else, if anyone else even teaches it.
i payed no attention in class, but went because i like him. Didn't buy the textbook. Studied a few hours for each exam. You get a notecard... just put the hard questions on the notecard and the test question will be exactly the same!
Very good professor. I had a hard time in his QMB class but I went to him during office hours and he was very helpful. He is very nice and wants to see his students succeed.
take him! introduce yourself and talk to him a couple times throughout the semester! he'll appreciate it and will remember you when it comes time for official grades! he's so nice! do TZ and REALLY study it and you will get an A/B easy!
TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM! He's great! Works with you on everything possible. If you have a problem with a test day he allows you to take it another day. SUPER HELPFUL & EASY TO TALK TO! Don't take this course with anyone else.
VERY NICE. Boring class but he is willing to help and accommodate! Very fair. I was doing really bad but studied his packets and got a 100!
great teacher. nice guy and is always willing to help students and is very clear. gives you a cheat sheet for formulas on every exam. most people do TutorZone but, i went to every class and easily got an A
Smith is one of the most helpful and understanding professors I have ever had. He really cares about his students and their success in the class.
This class is going to kill my 4.0, it's really really tough. That said, I am awful at stats. He will help you if you ask for it, often explaining beyond what is necessary. He is very polite and nice, but his lectures are insanely dull. He posts all material online, but will give little hints to questions on the exam in class.
Very friendly and understanding teacher. THE best teacher for QMB. Go to his office hours for more help if you need it and give yourself a few days to study for the tests and you should be fine.
Gary is a great teacher who truly cares about his students. He's there to help and wants you to get a good grade. Tests are easy if you go to class and do the homework. Homework isn't collected but its a really good review for the exams which is your whole grade. He loves talking to his students and will help in any way he possibly can.
Gary is an awesome teacher. He truly cares for his students. His tests aren't tricky.. they are very straightforward. No homework though, only four tests. Has a copy of the book in the library, so you don't need to buy it.
Professor Smith is an overall great professor. Really wish I was able to take another required course with him. Simply put, the man is great at what he does. He explains the rather complex concepts behind the material with clarity and ease. Finally, the class is set up for students to be successful without making it a free ride.
He was extremely nice and interacted with students. The subject/class will be tough if you don't stay on top of your work and ask for help. Not a bad class though
Gary is a very nice guy who is quite knowledgeable about statistics. His classes tend to be on the boring side and is often repeating himself. However, he is quite clear and tells you exactly what to study for the exams. His tests are tricky, though an accurate measure of your knowledge of the course
Gary is awesome!! I took this class last semester and it really helps build your excel skills. There are two books he wants you to buy and I recommend keeping them for future use especially when Excel is prevalent in the workforce. Good for referencing. This class started up again so things have changed about the course but I would recommend it!
Gary is an awesome professor and truthfully means the best for his students. If you are math oriented, you should be able to manage a decent grade, if you are excel oriented, it easily can be an easy A if you are good with formulas. Overall a very difficult class, to say the least, but you get what you put in. 2 weekly quizzes and three exams.
Your grade in the class is equally weighted between 3 large excel projects. He provides plenty of examples that help you get through them but they take forever and are very challenging. He is very caring and kind and really tries to get his students to understand the material.
Gary is a nice guy and tries his best with this class, but the class is a terrible elective choice. The class consists of 3 projects and they are next to impossible without consulting with others (which you arent allowed to do). The projects take a minimum of 15-20 hours a piece and are only given a weeks notice. Choose another elective
I took FIN 4453 with Gary and he is a really smart and nice guy. He is a master at mathematics and really knows what he is talking about. For this class you better be prepared to work hard and proactively, the 3 projects which make up the course grade are no joke. That being said, he is very helpful at office hours and I learned so much from him.
I never write reviews here but this professor was such a great guy. The class is made up 3 projects that take a week to do and you can't cram at the last minute. The projects aren't easy, but he is very willing to help his students and only wants the best. He is very nice. Expect to spend up to 15 hours for each project.
Gary is one of the most down to earth and caring prof. you'll have in COB. Forecasting is a pretty tough class, but he really wants you to do well. As people have said below, your grade is comprised of 3 projects. Material is pretty heavy and you need to start out a week in advance. Can't do it night before; I would've if possible. Slight curve.
Overall, he is one of the most kind professors in the college of business. The class is made up of three projects, i suggest work on them as soon as project instructions are released because you will definitely have some navigating to do. He is always willing to help his students and go the extra mile to make sure they understand all the content.
Professor Smith truly is a very kind man and a great professor in the College of Business. This finance course is very tedious and there are only 3 excel projects that decide your overall grade. These projects are NO JOKE and will take anywhere from 10-25 hours to complete. No curve but he will round you up if you're close to the next letter grade.
These reviews are very misleading. Gary's a great dude and more than willing to help, but if you're looking for an easy A elective, this isn't it. Projects take an insane amount of time and you won't get them done if you don't make friends fast and work on it together. If its the only class available, its not the worst option.
Gary is a great guy, but his lectures are veryyy slow. He is also very helpful on the projects, but that doesn't do much. They are still incredibly hard. Don't take this class as an easy senior elective if you just want to give up. It is a lot of work and there are only 2-3 grades.
Professor Smith explains difficult concepts in a way that is easy to understand, showing genuine care for his students' success. He often goes beyond his responsibilities to help students, which has been incredibly valuable to me. The skills I've acquired in his class have proven beneficial, personally and professionally.
Gary Smith is an awesome and caring person who is more than willing to help if you ask for it, but your entire grade is only based off of 3 projects that take a minimum of 15 hours to complete if done correctly. If you're okay with grinding that many hours every few weeks and you're experienced in excel you'll be fine.
Seriously work hard on the projects. I didn't give myself time on the first one and it seriously set me back. He was very helpful though and will literally sit down with you for hours if it came down to it. Sweetest professor I've had and he loves FSU and his class so much.
