A more mature Millhouse Vanhouten with a sampling of Cosmo Kramer
Hilarious prof; very helpful.
you have to respect anyone that loves ants as much as he does
No Comments
I might not understand all of the concepts, but that was a pretty funny class
He made the class wonderfull! I will always remember his overhead shenanigans!
I will never forget how to pronounce "muuuuu"
Exam was too long & focused on only one aspect, but he's hilarious and caring
Sweet guy, very very helpful. Knows how funny he is and uses it to teach better
No Comments
he makes a boring class worth going to, very funny!

Awesome class... SOOO funny: oooh blue water... what do i do with blue water
Umphrey is totally insane. a real lunatic but he's hilarious and a great teacher
funny, enthusiastic and quirky guy. made stats fun (believe it or not)
Hilarious, wears funny ties. Hard class if you haven't taken Finite.
stop the annoying sounds already. ugh. nice guy but explain things better. he is not funny. don't listen to other people.
Personable person, but found his assignments and tests hard
No Comments
he was the best part of a very hard course.....and i have him again the second time
decent, the course is crap, umphrey is good, although those sounds and talking to yourself gets old, shallow humour for shallow minds, especially the girls laugh alot, why? maybe it's b/c there's 10X's more of them, watchout for the exams and tests
Funny (and good) teacher. loves ants.
he gives you some easy questions on tests but for the most part it's really hard. good teacher, prevents lecture from being to dry with his lame but amusing jokes and sounds.
Good prof, sometimes lacks the relevant examples though. T-mack!
Meoww!!!why does he act like a cat in class...knows his **** but doesnt know how to teach..the midterms are a ****.. dont ever take that if u dont have to...
He can't teach!!!! He babbles more than he teaches.... its brutal... I learn more by reading the text book!
Nice enough guy I guess, but he treats his students like children with silly little jokes and comments. Needs to grow up. Also needs to offer more examples in class.
He talks 1000 miles a minute..wtf! Theres way too much material and not enough time in this course, he gives assignments on stuff you havent learned yet...he likes waht he does tho and the material isnt all that bad
The Umph-Meister as he is affectionately known to his posse, is one crazy cat. He knows his stuff, and likes it + ants, however tends to read through material rather than teaching it. And likes to accelerate exponentially as class draws to an end!-R
Doesn't know how to teach!! I aced the assignments and failed the midterms. No need to study for tests because it is all luck anyways since his tests have nothing to do with what he teaches.
I liked the guy. I thought he did a great job on a terrible subject! I'd reccomend him!
Entertaining, approachable, easily accessible to students. best part: lets you bring a crib sheet into exams and you can write anything on it. Easy course if you keep up with assignments. Loved his version of Dr Seuss' 1 fish, 2 fish, red fish..
He was a really great professor. He tries to make class fun by incorporating question on jelly beans, and green brains. His exams were kinda tough, but if you keep up with the assignments, you should do fine.
Best prof I've had at Guelph. He's really great and makes class so much fun. Love his stories about university...ask him about spanish lol
what is he talking about? and his voice is so annoying and loud. assignments take way too long and should be worth more, therefore no midterm.
Not bad. I wish he would spend more time going over theories instead of teaching things through examples. He does try to make the examples interesting though... I just feel like the class doesn't really prepare you for the exams
Does a good job.
WOW! umphrey blows my mind. from his go-dog-go tie to sitting beside students and asking them questions with the mic still on, this guy is the best.
dare i say it? he made stats "fun".
He is a great prof personality wise but I found it hard to learn from him. He didn't spend a lot of time explaining the concepts of how to solve certain questions. Classes were never boring, from stalking a talker, to requesting peace in the coluseum
This guy makes it fun! His stories are hilarious, and his dry sense of humour is great. Plus, he never wears the same tie twice in a semester!
Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous...you are lucky if you have him for stats! Definately one of the best profs I have had so far!
This man is the most confused and unorganized man i've ever met. I pity the poor t.a.'s that have to mark for him. I have no idea what is going on and i blame umphrey.
This guy rocked my world!
best.prof.ever. i'm double-majoring with stats now. makes the class super easy->gives so much preparation material for exams. you MUST attend class tho. EXCELLENT overall.
very very very good stats teacher! loved his teaching style, lots of examples, tests are moderately hard...
He was a great prof that knew what he was talking about. His assignments, labs, and tests were ****es though.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He takes an unbearably dry subject and actually makes it interesting, fun, and relevant. He can be a bit disorganized at times, but is very easy to learn from, and as a result the tests and assignments are not too tough.
Good prof, technologically illiterate. Makes stats bearable.
He is a nice guy. As a professor he is not bad nor is he great. I guess stats is difficult to teach but I just didn't think he was a "great" professor, but decent. Exams are difficult, but they are not tricky.
He tries very hard to make you understand -- he will work with you for hours on end if need be. A little scattered sometimes, but if you follow the text and pay attention in class, you'll ace Stats I. Also, DO THE PRACTICE MIDTERMS! He is quite challenging with his material, but no need to get <B+ if you put in a solid effort.
Good class if the work is done. Nice man and somewhat easy to listen to even though statistics is hardly interesting. Tells good jokes.
Seems like a nice guy but just can't teach. I am learning nothing in this class, and two assignments in the last week of classes due the day after the last day of class is a little ridiculous.
Wonderful man. Works so hard to get stuff for his students done even in his own time. He was way under helped. There happened to be a lot of technical difficulties this semester mostly due to the new courselink and he worked hours to get stuff done for us. Provides numerous resources, and gives different marking scheme for your benefit.Super Prof
He is a wonderful person, but unfortunately a horrible teacher. He is scattered unclear and most of his lectures were essentially useless. In the last two classes he grazed over two of the largest most difficult subjects we dealt with this semester. First 4 lectures were wasted on i-clicker, which i think sums up his effectiveness as a teacher.
I agree 100% with the previous comment. First 2 weeks we did iclicker data and means. Last week of class he taught what should have been a month of material, making the exam very difficult. A very nice man but his notes are terrible.
Umprey is just rediculous he is very interested in what he does, but cannot teach he cannot work technology we spent more time watching his try and fix him computer then actual lecture time. Stats is fun just not with him.
He was an awesome guy, hilarious, loves his ants. But his teaching sucked, his lectures were very dry and his computer never worked.
Intro stats can be a shock. I know lots of people slacked. Many thought it would be an easy data management course. He provided many examples around the material, and usually stayed around afterward to answer questions. Really immature comments on Courselink after people bombed the midterm. Umphrey is a gem.
I did not enjoy him as a professor at all. His notes are almost useless and going to class didn't help with learning the content. Highly facilitated learning, if you can avoid him as a prof I would do it.
AMAZING!!!!
Tough class made alot of people bitter but Umphrey was great. Always very positive and helpful. Made a potentially horrible course bearable.
great teacher. great man. i think we all love him so much that we are convinced he is a good teacher :P you can't really make use of his time unless you do your homework, ask questions and do your own readings. slg + umphrey + text and ur golden. looked forward to seeing him every morning
Hated this course. Not because of the prof though, just because of the material. Gary does try to keep thing interesting by pulling in interesting articles and studies, however I learned the majority of the material from the textbook. The lectures were more like in-class examples...
Umphrey is a great prof. He is funny and he keeps you so entertained, it's kind of sad when you have to leave class. This course, however, is a nightmare. It isn't his fault. he gives you plenty of past exams and in class examples that should help you with the assignments and exams, but independent study is invaluable and essential for
Dr Umphrey is so adorable! He also is a great communicator and makes statistics interesting and helpful. I've gone to see him about problems in the course and he has been patient and explains things until they make sense.
Literally the worst prof i have ever had. He made this course unbearable. Never really taught any concepts, or explaining equations and problems. If you can i HIGHLY suggest you take this course from another Prof. Umphrey is not helpful at all.
I'm having a horrible time in his class. I don't doubt that he knows his stuff. He tries to make it fun though. I attend all of his classes (you need to because the notes he posts online have barely anything on it, its all handwritten in class) and I'm struggling. No outline of what to read in the textbook to keep up. The midterm was very difficult
Terrible lecturer. Concepts were not explained thoroughly enough, and not only were his posted lecture slides incomprehensible and incomplete, he barely referenced the textbook. I have never heard of this many people dropping a class either. I relied solely on the textbook for this unbearable class. He's a smart guy, he just can't teach.
The course material itself wasn't awful, the prof definitely was. Unorganized, jumps around, wastes time talking about insects, teaches things on midterm the day of, assignments were marked incorrectly and consistently put up late. A nice person, but not the brightest and a terrible teacher. Avoid if possible.
Teaches math so that you understand the how and why and respects his students enough to let you figure things out on your own
Funny guy!
Awful. Never organized, awful teacher. Assignments were always marked incorrectly, midterms were brutal. Prepare to learn from the textbook.
Very nice man, not a good professor. He is EXTREMELY disorganized and makes the class 10x harder than it should be. If you need to take STATS2040, take it with a different professor.
He expects you to understand all concepts and do textbook readings ahead of time. Stats is based on building blocks you simply can forget concepts because you passed the final. Tests are fair. This course is designed for phys sciences. Don't take if your not as you will miss concepts taught in other mathstats courses and it'll be hard for you!!
The course requires work, but if you do the work then you will see the results from it! Stats really isn't the type of course where you can just sit in a lecture and understand everything, you really need to practise. Umphrey is the best, very very great guy, but if you don't do the work you wont like him.
He's not a high school teacher, so don't expect him to be one. He's a professor. He expects you to do more than just show up to class; but, that's not to say he isn't fair. If you're willing to put in the time to understand the content, you will exceed. That being said, his typing skills could use some work.
Most confusing lectures
I took Experimental Design with Umphrey and the class size was quite small. I hadn't taken STAT*2040 or 2050 with him but I didn't hear the greatest things. I don't know what those people were talking about, I found him to be quite enjoyable. He took our class on field trips to see designs in practice which was great and his stories are hilarious.
If you want to be confused for an entire semester then take stats with him. He doesnt have any clear lecture plans and just teaches whatever comes to mind. He expects you to have a ton of background knowledge on the topics which most people dont so it makes it hard to follow along. He gives open book tests but they can still be hard. beware.
Umphrey was the worst prof I have ever had. He is useless in lecture and just struts around making everyone uncomfortable. His notes are bare minimum and very scattered. He wastes time in class and all learning was done on my own time. The assignments are irrelevant to course material, & take way too long to complete given how little they are worth
Coming into this class from peer reviews and reviews on this website, I expected a terrible prof in Umphrey. To be honest, I'm not sure where these awful reviews came from. He may be slightly unorganized in his lectures, but he explains all of the material needed for his tests in his, and provides examples and assignments that represent Test Q's.
Such a bad professor lectures are impossible to follow and nothing makes sense.
Be very careful with this professor Gary Umphrey. Learning from him in lectures is difficult. He uses language that is very refined. His lecture slides do not contain much content and his explanations of the content are brief and inadequate. I recommend you read textbook examples and talk to him directly(office hours). Avoid professor if possible.
You need the textbook to essentially teach yourself. His lectures are confusing and usually involve him playing around with "R".
His lecture slides are a mess. If you don't go to class, it is impossible to teach yourself from his notes. I relied solely on the internet. He also hands out important tables and charts in class and does not post them online, nor tell you he handed them out. Makes it very difficult to do well if you miss class. (Mine was at 8:30 am so I did)
Stats is not an easy class. Go to class. I attended class and wrote down everything he said even if I didn't understand it. Later when I reviewed my notes, THEN it all made sense and with notes and handouts did well on the exam. You just need practice and time to absorb it. Gary always takes time for students at office hours if you need help.
I have never experienced a worse professor. I went to all of his lectures, took notes, read his slides and still decided to drop the course because I was doing so poorly and almost half of the class failed the first midterm! In class he does not teach - simply messes around with R. His assignments are outrageously long, hard and only worth 5%.
AWFUL AWFUL I go to class all the time and write down everything. Half of his slides just have the answer on them without explaining how he got it. Half the class has no clue whats going on. DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HIM
If it werent for the textbook and watching Prof Balkas YouTube videos, I wouldve failed this course. Umphrey is a nice guy, willing to help during office hours/after class, but had vague notes. I went to every lecture and didnt understand anything he explained, only useful info was his hints about assignments. Avoid taking stats with him!
Umphrey is a really sweet man and is more than willing to help you after class or during office hours. He does expect you to be taking notes in class and working to understand the material. The midterms and final were more than fair - for the final we were allowed 4 pages of cheat sheets. I will say more of a grounding in R would have been nice.
I found Umphrey to be a pretty decent prof. He wasn't the clearest at explaining assignment expectations or due dates, but he provides AMAZING test banks for every test and the exam. The class was very balanced, and his expectations were super reasonable. Also, just a really nice guy overall.
The reason people worry about this professor is because they aren't good at math. Learn your stuff and the lectures are hilarious and sometimes useful but sometimes pointless (easy to tell from the start and all the classnotes are posted online).
I went to every lecture, but I still just can't understand the math "word jargon" that he uses. He is a smart guy, but I found I just can't understand him. He teaches like we all know math like the back of our hand. Only thing that worked for me was youtube when I had Umphrey.... (He is a nice guy through)
Umphrey is a great prof, he explains everything you need to know clearly with examples in class. If you dont understand something he is very approachable and helpful in office hours as well as email. He posts all past midterms hes ever given with full solutions plus you get cheat sheets so those are easy to do well in! no need to drop $ on text
I hate stats so much. Skipped all his lectures and his powerpoints are awful to study from on their own
As long as you attend lectures, you'll be able to do the homework. The homework is essential to understanding the concepts he teaches in class. He's always in his office willing to help and truly cares about his students. It's important to go to class and take notes as not everything is described on the slides! Exams are very similar to past ones!
While I know Dr. Umphrey is a very kind and caring professor, I found taking his course online next to impossible. This class is usually taught in a computer lab with loads of support and just didn't translate to the online format.
Might as well teach yourself because his lectures are awful. You must do the posted questions and research the concepts yourself. His lectureswaste of time. In class he gets stuck in circles about the theory, but does not cover the actual steps required to solve the problems. The program "R" is a joke & he provides very few codes or how to use it.
He's a really nice guy but his class sucks so much. No textbook or notes, just recorded lectures. The lectures are a mess, no lecture outline or labels. He doesn't really explain anything, just show's his R screen. Trying to look at past lectures is horrible because it's a giant mess.
I also had Dr. Umphrey for STAT 2050 this semester. I totally disagree with the other student who reviewed Dr. Umphrey for this semester. Dr. Umphrey goes above and beyond in terms of helping students outside of class, he truly cares about the student's success. All assignments and grading I received was very fair and lectures were very enjoyable.
The style of this class is different, you're expected to research the book for depth. He helps point you to the right areas, it's a great skill to learn. He teaches just the right amount to get you to understand the content but you need to dig in to really know how to use it. Fun, funny, very caring, loves stats, and great selection of ties.
Nice guy, not the best lecturer. There was a very helpful youtube playlist of the same concepts (made by one of the other stats prof at UofG) that was what got me through the class. Tests weren't too hard. He definitely knows his stuff, but the lectures were hard to learn from.
Dr.Umphrey. So much, yet so little. To start the semester, we were urged to purchase a membership to Wiley-Plus. We have yet to use this resource, I doubt he will use it in the next two weeks before finals. Goodbye $100. He complains too much, about everything: masks, wifi, student boards. Overall, he is a dinosaur who needs to get with the times.
Gary should not be a prof. He rambles on forever. His lectures are pointless and teach you 10 minute of stuff in 50. His assignments are brutally hard and require you to teach all the information yourself. If you ask him a question you’ll never get a straight/useful answer. Gary is the definition of beating around the bush.
Awful. Never uploaded the solutions to assignments, never told us what to do when using R except for the last assignment. Had us pay $100 for a software we never used, his lectures were all over the place. Refused to record lectures, saying it lowered the quality of in-person lectures. Truth is...it was his teaching that lowered them.
Umphrey is a nice guy and is clearly educated. However, his lectures consist of dealing with constant easily avoidable tech issues and rambling off topic. he doesn't upload lecture slides for days or weeks after the lecture, and they are unclear and hard to learn from. He told everyone buy an online subscription for $100 but we never used it once
Pretty well taught. Pay attention in classes, the 2-3 classes after an assignment drops are helpful. - show up to class. He did not post any lecture recordings and it would have been hell if I had missed any classes - know your shit from STAT2040. This course relies heavily on material from that one and he doesn't reteach anything.
Lectures are completely incomprehensible, assignment is WAY beyond what we have learned so far, like multiple chapters away. Also spends half the lectures having tech issues. He just shows up and decides what to teach that day. He refuses to post problem solutions and never does examples so it is impossible to relate his rambling to problems
Dr. Umphrey is a very nice man, but he is extremely absent-minded. So much so that he forgets to give you assignments, forgets to post solutions, and forgets about due dates. He consistently has so many tech issues that he wastes class time. That said, he is always willing to help outside of class! I wish we had more practice questions though.
Dr. Umphrey is very knowledgeable and is easy to reach outside of class for extra help. If you go to all lectures, and read the recommended free textbook, you will do very well. Dr. Umphrey also provides practice assignments for tests that are great examples for what to expect on tests and the tests/final were open note.
BRUTAL
rambles on, cannot teach for the life of him, disorganized, should not be teaching
good luck.
Godspeed.
needs to retire, lectures are worthless better off reading the textbook
Gary is a really sweet guy and he seems like he wants his students to do their best. The problem is that he rambles on about pointless things and leaves only 30 minutes left for the material. He writes small and messy so you can't follow along, and he doesn't explain what he's doing. Other than that, his tests are fair and you get cheat sheets.
Great professor. Go to office hours, he is very helpful.
He is a sweetheart.
The assignments for this class were completely unreasonable- took so many hours with very unclear instructions. As a person, gary is very sweet and can have entertaining lectures, but i learnt very little in his class and had to teach myself most of the material
Purposely does not post things on the Course link for this course because he only wants people who go to lectures to succeed. Which would be fine if his lectures were useful and informative, but they're not. Attending his lectures has never once helped me to solve questions on his problem sets because he only touches on basic theory in lectures.
Godspeed Gumphrey.
The lectures really aren't required attendances, however his office hours are very good. The test archive that he posts is a godsend and the midterms/exams have very very similar structure to his previous years so if you do well on the practice tests. You'll do well on his actual tests.
His classs are really quick.
Nice guy, but is extremely unorganized. His lessons are all over the place and dont seem to follow any sort of structure. Sometimes he only touches important topics for 5 minutes in class, then moves on. He is always willing to help but struggles with having any sort of order.
Gary's STAT2040 class can be hit or miss, but the practice tests and Unstuck ai resources are clutch. Go to office hours - he's super helpful, even if his lectures ramble. With some effort, you can do well.
STATS*2050 is a very R-heavy course and when taken with other professors has assignments accompanying the exams to balance them out and take advantage of teaching R. Umphrey is the ONLY stats teacher that only has 3 in-person handwritten assessments with assignments worth nothing. His method of teaching is illogical and does not help students.
I understand he is scattered and it is confusing and can feel like alot- especially if you miss a few classes. BUT Gary is an exceptional person, and he cares about his students. His tests are quite easy compared to others. If you are having problems just go talk to him. he will literally give you a map to succeed. just go talk to him!!!
Umphrey is a nice and funny guy, but not a great prof. He posts nothing online, and his lectures are confusing and scattered, so it is incredibly difficult to study for his tests. This would be fine if there was assignments or anything else to make up for tests grades, but your entire grade is based on 2 tests and a final.
Amazing professor, lectures are captivating and funny. He is so kind and truly wants all of his students to succeed, if you are ever struggling email him or go to office hours and he'll make sure everything makes sense.
gary is a great guy, you can tell he cares a lot about his students. he can get a little disoriented, which makes lectures a little confusing, but he posts his slides. hes overall very sweet and i would def recommend him to others
Funny, but not really good at teaching. Gets pretty distracted. Still my goat though.
