Always late to class.
Wonderful teacher. Teaches 4-5 classes a semester so this is one busy man.

Lectures came straight from the text and were hardly worth attending. Tests were fairly easy. Professor Vargas was far from the worst professor I've ever had, but he wasn't fun or brilliant or inspiring, either.
Vargas is great! His approach to histroy is so critical, and he truely understands hisotry beyond the dates and events, he knows the implications of what history means as fas as explainiing what a human is. Quizes are easy, and the for the test you can do a take home essay. One of the best teachers I ever had!
Very Good teacher. But he does nothing but lecture, which sometime can put you to sleep. Homework- Read a book and answer question about it. Test- easy but do have to study for them to get an A Grading- Not to hard (I’m would take him again) Also another great history teacher is Mr. Sleeper.
He was such a good teacher I took all of my history classes with him. He knows his stuff, the whys and hows of history and is an interesting lecturer.
Awesome Professor! Ok, don't let the workload scare you, cuz there is a lot, but is broken up which makes it much easier to accomplish! Gives study guides, topics to choose from for papers, it doesn't get much easier/organized than this! He is very willing to help with ?'s you may have and also will compromise with you if you've fallen behind
lots of work...very unorganized...hard teacher...not really intresting....boring class....:(
I took his class online. It was a lot of work, but I learned sooooooo much! He's very patient, extremely nice and helpful.
I took Mr. Vargas last summer online and it was a breeze! Mr. Vargas is very easy to work with, his quizzes were pretty simple once the material was read and in case of emergency or situations beyond your control Mr. Vargas is very understanding. I would recommend his class to anyone. His online class was very easy.
Terrible teacher! 2/3 of class faied the first test and over half failed the second. This teacher teaches a one sided view of history, is full of himself and doesn't allow for other opinions. If you are conservative, he will consider you to be ignorant. DON'T TAKE HIM!
Great teacher and fantastic human being. He cares about his students and wants them to understand the material. His system was very easy to learn and I would recommend 100%.
teaches the subject well
ALOOOTT of work and studying. BUt if you do the required reading you should be fine.
I took this professor online and got a B. He is a boring professor who cannot return graded work in a timely manner. He took all semester to grade assigments. His quizzes are easy.Discussion boards are easy but you won't know your grades on them until a week after semester has ended. Overall I would not recommend this professor or take him again.
Good teacher. His lectures can put you to sleep. knows his stuff. If you read the text book you will do fine on the test. hes a cool little guy (and i mean little)
Took it online. Easy work (1-2 days each week). Got an A w/o buying the main textbook (the other 2 books were needed). Doesn't grade things quickly but when he gets behind he cancels or reduces assignments, so he's fair about it. Doesn't respond on the discussion boards but does to email. I'd take him again. No cummulative final.
I took four history classes at MSJC and Vargas was the worst. Uninspiring and boring lectures. Probably should be teaching high school. Take Sleeper or Davis.
Online Class. This guy is the worst! He is not very organized and is kinda a ****! He grades writing assignments like an english professor looking at grammar and spelling and completely disregarding the actual content of the essay!!! Overall This was a terrible class and i wouldn't suggest this class to anyone. Take someone else.
Don't take this class online. I have taken history classees and really enjoyed them but this guy is silly with his online classes. Just read your book and you will do ok. If you like quizes each week that don't cover the class then this is the CLASS for you.
Engaging teacher. Challenging class, but recommended over Sleeper, who requires way too much reading and homework.
good teacher overall. knows his stuff. funny yet remains focused on lectures which are long and may be a little boring but lots of info. study the study guides and you will do fine on the tests. take notes during videos he lets u use them. easy points. attend class regularly. very helpful inside and outside of class very available to help sudents.
I don't understand why others are saying that Professor Vargas is boring I found class thouroughly entertaining when I applied the history lessons to my own interests! Many of the students only wanted to goof off during class and several dropped out after the first written report. It's college people, get used to writing!
Not a bad teacher, but not great either. He is tough, but passable. Just make sure you attend the classes and dont miss a word on the powerpoints he puts up. His tests are pretty difficult. Multiple choice, but every answer sounds good. He's a funny guy. Curses like a sailor though. He knows his history! Which is nice. Worth taking if only choice!
I think he was a good teacher. yes he was bit boring at times, but he knew what he was teaching and he was a bit entertaining. i don't understand why people are complaining about work because he only have like 3 or 2 writing assignments in class. and he does most of his quizzes off film/ movies. the test are a bit hard but if you study you will pas
Pro. Vargas was a good teacher.. I took his history 112 class in the summer.. Very chill class... He provided everything for the test and only one paper.. He wad also very flexible.. Easy A
I took his summer history 112 class and absolutely loved it. I am no history major but he made it worth while
OUTSTANDING professor. Keeps you intrigued with his lectures.
Very cool guy! Curses alot, but very personable. Tests are easy, just follow study guide (Multiple choice only). Not the most thrilling lectures, but he's clear and concise. Doesn't take attendance beyond about the third week. Easy workload, easy textbook. You only need to read two extra books. I took honors and he's always there to help.
Very good professor! Material is easy the way he lays it all out :)
Great class. Latin history is a very interesting subject and Prof. Vargas knows what he is talking about. He makes learning enjoyable. Study with the study guide provided and you will be prepared for the tests. Books assigned are interesting and enjoyable compared to original history books. In the end you will be knowledgable in Latin history.
Professor Vargas is an exemplary teacher who is more than willing to go above and beyond for students willing to put forth solid effort. The tests are not easy but, if you pay attention, you'll do fine. A word of advice when doing your essay; make it half a page longer than it has to be because your grade is on the chopping block if it's short.
the class wasn't to hard and pretty interesting. the only down side is vargas was ALWAYS late and sometimes missed class
Great professor. I wasn't crazy for the material but he made it interesting.
overall i enjoyed professor vargas' class. he does lecture all the time but they way he presents it can be enteraining at times. i recommend him.
He's such an awesome teacher. His lectures are so interesting it's hard not to pay attention.
Great Guy! He had a tough end of the semester where classes were cut short, but he was very understanding and posted the notes up online. His tests are a little challenging. You have to come to every class to get the notes and if you're like me, he makes funny jokes that help you to remember the material. Overall he was an OUTSTANDING professor!
great teacher. write everything he puts up on the power point its the answers to the test. do study guide and make sure to make it to all the classes if you can. he lays out all the info you need and answers any questions you have. dont take him if you are easily offended he curses a lot and has really strong opinions.
One of the best teachers I have ever had! He makes something that can be boring interesting and relevant. His history classes have made me so much more knowledgeable and changed the way I look at everything! Don't miss an opportunity to take a class from him! He's funny as hell too.
I'm pretty disappointed with Vargas overall. He was weeks behind grading for a majority of the semester and I felt he graded us more on whether our opinions matched his rather than the actual content of our work. I wouldn't take this class again.
Easy class. Do the study guide and you will ace the tests. Class is entirely lecture with films every now and then. He is a great teacher. But he talks about his political, religious and personal life ALOT and also cusses ALOT. I didn't mind, but just fyi! Overall great class!!
You get an honest, fair shake with Vargas, no favoritism or BS grading practices. If you score low, it's because you didn't do the work. He spells EVERYTHING out. Multiple choice tests cover concepts over memorization. Tests cover notes and text, and he provides a study list. Very entertaining w/ lectures. Must buy text (Aplia). Would take again.
He is a great and knowledgeable instructor. Although he may scare you at first, his test questions come straight from the lectures! He's passionate and explains history in a way I've never thought of. Before taking this class history was boring, after his class I grew to appreciate history :)
Easy A if you're willing to do the work. Tests are multiple choice, but a lot of the questions are "which of the follow is NOT associated with Person/Idea/etc". Vargas will work with you if you struggle. Great guy. Make sure you take notes directly from the power point during class. I definitely recommend and would take again.
I took the online course, I originally had McColm but something happened to where I ended up with Prof. Vargas which I am glad it happened! McColm assigned way to much reading. Vargas mostly had lectures and made reading the textbook optional. Weekly, timed quizzes, which was probably the only part I hated because your rushing to complete the quiz.
World History Since 1500. Super passionate about his subject. Exams were not easy, but they weren't unfair. Has high standards, and will not hold back if he is disappointed in the test scores or essay drafts he receives. His class is not easy, but I learned a lot and appreciate History more. Took me aside to let me know that he loved my essays.
I would not recommend him. He prefers to talk about his modern day political opinions despite the fact that were supposed to be talking about history before 1500. He cusses a lot and while he thinks it makes him look cool, it actually just makes him even more unprofessional. Tests aren't easy but the questions are right off of the study guide.
I cannot stand his class. Although he knows what he's talking about, his tests are designed to make you fail! I studied my ass of for his tests and I always received Cs. Trust me do not take this class. He curses way too much and he's so arrogant. I regret ever taking him. He doesn't care if you pass his class or not.
Don't take this class. when I was in his class I didn't feel like he cared about his students grades. He words his tests in a confusing way to make you fail. He's also very rude.
Avoid taking his class. You have been warned. There are other history teachers that want to see you succeed, and to learn from their class, but Vargas is not one of those teachers. He was late a lot, and the semester is over and people still don't know what grades they received on their first essay from March.
Poor Instructor, He's too concerned with his HONOR STUDENTS grades than the majority of students. Would not recommend him even as a last resort.. He has posted final grades without giving student the score of the final essay...
Poor Instructor, He's too concerned with his HONOR STUDENTS grades than the majority of students. Would not recommend him even as a last resort.. He has posted final grades without giving students the score of the final essay... Professionally he use too much profanity. Be warned do not listen to other students he is not a good instructor..
He is a great professor and expects alot from his students and expects you to read all the material. He does use profound words but is in general a nice guy with a opinion on the world. He does not sugar coat when he talks to you and will be blunt, but overall I have learned alot form his class. Expect to use your study guide, book, and lecture not
This is the best professor I have come across at MSJC. He preforms fantastic lectures and really gets you thinking about whats happening in history. I would really recommend him specially if you find history boring he'll spice it up for ya.
He's an amazing lecturer. Even without an interest in history, he held my attention in every class. The tests can be difficult; you either know the answers or you don't. There's no guessing through them. Final paper is weighted heavily but he doesn't grade it harshly. Definitely recommend taking him.
Professor Vargas is someone who loves what he teaches. Although he is a bit scary he makes lecture very interesting, never a dull moment. Tests are difficult so read the textbook, pay attention to lecture, and do the study guide. If you work hard and try you can pass.
Challenging. One of the few professors to impress me. He taught more than just the basic, he tried to give the students a deeper understanding societycause-effectpeople and what he taught opposed to just leaving you with the facts of history. Improves your thinking skills, he might be a little crazy maybe, but in my experience the brightest are.
He's cool. He's not a flag waver, so I think he gives pretty unbiased lectures regarding countries and their doings. I like his style.
He is a professor who definitely has tenure. Take notes on your laptop and transfer the notes from the lecture to your study guide which is all provided by Professor Vargas. It is the easiest way to get an A.
So far, he is my all time favorite professor. Very funny, energetic and entertaining as well as smart and easy to talk to. The tests are quite difficult, and your grade is based exclusively on tests and the term paper which makes it challenging to get a good grade. As long as you have thick skin and an open mind, Vargas has a a lot to teach.
Honestly, he is a very good professor. Unbiased on lectures. I believe his class would be easier if I didn't take the summer class. Summer class with him, not even he handled it. He skipped and missed chapters and I read them on the book and he just deleted from test. Wouldn't think about taking him again and do not take in summer! Not worth it
Mr. Vargas is an excellent professor who tries to keep his students engaged in the lecture as much as possible. He is animated and knowledgeable and an old school rocker. He will mention his fondness for classic rock a few times and has a tendency to throw markers and erasers across the room to emphasize his points.
Professor Vargus is a very passionate professor who loves what he teaches. With that said, he can sometimes come off as rude but overall, the class is entertaining. He tries to make the history come to life with his style of lecture. The tests were easy, and I don't think he is a tough grader at all.
I hate to do this because he seems like a good professor but he was not very organized. He lectures quite a bit. He did explain that this semester he was working off a new text book and many lectures were prepared the night before (same for tests). I would not take him again. If you need structure don't take his class.
I am still currently enrolled in his class but so far it is very straight forward. Lots of note taking and listening! He gives good study guides for the test which you can honestly fill out just from looking at notes you have taken (as long as they are good notes) which is awesome. Overall easy if you put in the time and effort to study.
Professor Vargas is amazing! I loved his lectures, they were very in-depth and hilarious!! He knows his stuff! His class was challenging but he was there to help everyone yep for he way and I loved it! As long as you try, you will pass. I recommend him to those of you who have a passion for learning and love a challenge! Wold love to take him again
One of my fav profs by far, very funny and entertaining. Very lecture heavy but as long as you take notes and do the study guides you will pass. Loved taking his course and would highly recommend him
Professor Vargas is a 5'4 ball of fury. He is very passionate about what he teaches which makes his lectures better. He has one essay throughout the whole semester and his schedule is pretty concise. He also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities! You do need the textbook. I would definitely take him again.
Is a caring professor that will do everything he can to make sure you pass. I highly recommend because he is funny and gives great feedback on essays . He is very quick to answering emails and questions about anything. He is absolutely amazing and respectful!
Great class. Nothing too difficult. Vargas is a fantastic teacher who is very passionate about what he teaches. The class is all note taking for the most part. Tests are easy, the study guides give great input to what will be on the test. Only downside is he is a slow grader.
Good teacher; knows his stuff and is passionate about history. All you do in class is take notes. Occasionally watched a few videos and took a quiz, but you can take notes during the video and use it for the quiz. Will elaborate off of what is on the powerpoint. If you study, you will be fine for the test.
Vargas's lectures were always so interesting. He is very passionate about history and knows what he's talking about. He has a lot of good, liberal opinions as well. The exams aren't too hard as long as you take good notes & fill out the study guide. But at the same time you don't have to go, you could just read the textbook and be okay.
As an online teacher, he's not great. He doesn't grade anything, and half the stuff in the tests isn't in the textbook so you automatically lose points. Gives us assignments and says stuff like "my last class failed this and I don't know why" and doesn't fix it. My brother has him on campus and he says he's not great in-person either.
Loves to hear himself talk, but not in an obnoxious way. He can lecture for hours, but still manages to keep you interested.
Lectures are average, he highlights what will be on the quiz. The way he words his test makes it hard for you to understand. If he does not like how the book words something he will make his own lecture and it can be confusing for some. This class requires a lot of time but if you put that time you will do good.
He was a great teacher and very funny. If you take good notes and read the textbook you will do fine. Most of the notes are on the quizzes he gives. However, pay close attention to his wording on tests because he will try and confuse you. He gives 10 points of extra credit and is always ready to answer any question you have.
lectures are entertaining and keeps you engaged. He is passionate about history and it shows. His quizzes are simple. His exams are fine. He gives you a study guide and the questions on the exam are from the notes taken in class. He does not post his lectures online so you miss class, you better get the notes from a classmate.
As long as you stay on top of things you'll be fine. Lectures are the same thing as on the test. Hilarious guy.
Prof. Vargas is a gem of college professor. For two reasons: one, he knows his stuff and, two, his study guides perfectly aline with the tests. Theres nothing I appreciate more than a professor that sticks to the syllabus and provides clear grading criteria. In Prof. Vargas class you will laugh and learn a lot. I highly recommend him as a professor
Vargas is a great dude! I recommend to people who are looking for a history professor who can preach yet also teach at the same time. The way he teaches just blows my mind! He is also very accessible outside of class and is very clear on how he grades. A complete true gem to the History Department on campus! <3
I do not recommend taking over the summer. He makes the class much more work than it needs to be. You will have multiple quizzes due a week which require reading many chapters from the txtbk. In last 2 wks of class he assigned a huge paper and 8 quizzes which was very stressful. Does not post his ppts which contains info needed to complete quizzes.
Hardest class so far. The Professor is very into hearing himself speak and that's about it. His exams are very hard to pass. Class average was 68%. So it was not just me.
i love prof vargas!!! he always made lecture so interesting. i will say he wasnt good with keeping up with grading and updating us when things were happening. his study guides dont really line up with the tests but as long as you study and read the material youll pass. offers extra credit.
This guy loves to hear himself speak. His Powerpoint lectures are loaded and he doesn't upload them onto Canvas so you're forced to take excessive notes while listening to him literally droning on then explosive yelling. He loves to brag about how many students he fails and his wants for research papers are unclear. Sadly he is the chair of his dep
I loved this professor! Very down to earth and cool! Highly enthusiastic lectures and be ready for heavy note taking as he does not post his lectures on canvas and some context for tests can come only from the in class notes! But hey its college, go to class and take notes! If youre offended by curse words or liberal thoughts, you wont like it.
The whole class is a few big exams and a long essay at the end. Lectures everyday with a few quizzes. Gives study guide but does not follow it, and unorganized. He cusses every other word, and has a bad character. Unless your good at tests, I would say dont take this class!!
I would highly suggest you do not take this professor. Did not take course seriously and would tell inappropriate stories during lecture time instead of teaching (often). Excessive use of profanity. Late grading for final.
Professor Vargas was a great professor! He had lots of slide shows put together for everybody. He makes everyone feel part of the class. Hes very friendly and easy going, he smiles a lot. His class was fast paced but if you do all your notes the class is easy.
He's a really funny teacher, respectful, and made me actually learn history as it's always been difficult for me. He uses a lot of profanity, and can be inappropriate at times, but it's his character. You've just gotta roll with it. Taking him in the summer. It's the Olympics of a class, but interesting. Get ready for hand cramps.
Professor Vargas is an engaging, knowledgeable teacher that takes History to a whole 'nother level. Energetic lectures, and challenging coursework shows that he is not only passionate about history, but also as a mentor/teacher. If I could take him for every history class I would.
Amazing professor, the insight he gives is phenomenal.
Professor Vargas hates God and makes this very clear in his lectures, so if you are a Christian, just be prepared for that. I'm not saying don't take his class, just be ready for an almost weekly assault on your core beliefs. He also uses quite a bit of strong language, so just keep that in mind. He definitely knows his history though!!
I would not recommend him. His tests are very hard. Those who say that the study guides align with his tests are false, because he even says that his tests are hard. A Professor that is adamant and gloating about his tests being hard should be a red flag. His stories and lectures are interesting ill give him that.
Professor Vargas is a really great guy and is always available to answer any questions. His quizzes and tests are actually a bit hard if you don't study and take good notes. On the exams, he does sometimes try to trick you by wording the questions a different way. If you are willing to put in the work for this class, you will be fine.
He knows about the subject and he thinks about the student.
This class was not as hard as everyone had said. The tests are exactly like the study guides he gives and there is little to no homework given. Lectures or a video every class but easy to understand just not too interesting. Notes arent even needed as long as you have the book the answers are easy to find. The quizs he gives are all online.
This teacher is absolutely insane. He curses and insults people throughout his class. If I wasnt already upset about my term paper grade I would still say the same thing. First week of class I was shocked at how he acts, and could not believe he is the head of this history dept/ chairman and has tenure.
I don't ever make critical reviews but I felt I needed to. This professor is the worst teacher I've ever had. He always went off topic and would put in his own opinions that weren't necessary. As a student I was there to learn history, not his personal beliefs. His tests were very hard and he even said it multiple times. He acted like he didn'tcare
By far the worst professor I have had at MSJC. It doesn't help that this was an online course. He expects/sets his students to fail. Vargas writes his own test questions and words them in such a matter that you purposely get the answer wrong. Absolutely no communication with his students. History was my favorite subject, until now that is..
Aren't teacher supposed to have compassion and be emphatic ? I sent him an email and asked him why exams and quizzes are so difficult. This was his answer: "I am 68 years old so my work ethic is a bit old school before everything got dumbed down. Today's college degree is the equivalent of a high school diploma" So basically he called us dumb.
Cannot seem to grasp online format what so ever. Expects us to test on the lectures but then gives questions he writes himself From the book that are completely differently worded. Would have been okay if he posted lecture videos so the content would make sense but he doesnt. Said he would stop quizzing from the book and then did that anyways.
No syllabus, discussions or lectures. Assignments are read chapter, few slides & take test. Questions are what doesnt belong what is it not. Constantly changes his plan for the week, canceled the final & said hed use mid-term as final & it would be worth 75% of overall grade. Highest grade on midterm/final was a 75% with a mean of 45.5%
Hes the most disorganized prof Ive ever had. He is vague on everything he assigns. He refuses to put up his PP slides but theyre paragraphs long. He brags about how many students fail his classes. If you ask for clarification he says you need to think like him. Do yourself a favor & take your history class from Tami Smith.
He pulls information from the textbook, and rather than utilizing the text itself, he makes his own interpretations of history and uses that as the answers. You will rarely find the answer directly in the text, but rather by reading and attempting to compare the correct information with the most similar answer there is. Good luck.
Joke of a professor. All of the learning was done online by ourselves and the quizzes are horribly formatted. Told quizzes were based off PowerPoint lectures but the questions did not pertain to the PowerPoint at all. When reaching he claims he wants it to be difficult but fails to understand how horrendously setup the quizzes are. Don't take.
I had Prof Vargas for two online classes. His quizzes are definitely hard because you had to read your text as well as the powerpoints. Overall, I enjoyed both classes and the essay topics were fun to work on. There weren't much extra credit opportunities so make sure to do well on quizzes and not miss.
His quizzes are the worst I have ever experienced. Many based off videos yet the questions are often vague or could have multiple answers. I would recommend to stay away horrible teacher unnecessarily difficult and confusing !PLEASE STAY AWAY FOR YOUR OWN GOOD
The online class was very simple and repetitive with the work for each week. I'm definitely not complaining about that though considering the work for the week would take me no more than an hour tops. He is really hard to access outside of class. It's very easy to get a low grade considering there are only few assignments! something to keep in mind
Unfortunately, this professor doesn't interact with the class. The quizzes are vague and often biased. The PowerPoint lectures are not historically accurate and have little to do with the quizzes. Worst of all, none of the discussion boards have been graded since the beginning of the semester, which is very frustrating.
This professor is super easygoing, very responsive, and reasonable, and they made the course easy to learn and pass. This professor would message back and be always willing to make something work out. If you see this professor's name, do not hesitate to take their class. I'm shocked their reviews aren't higher, at least a 4.8/4.9-star teacher.
The primary concern I have for this professor is their transparent conundrum of wanting their students to succeed. They only provide bleak study guides in efforts to prepare students for quizzes/exams (the quizzes are not easy).
the class is very unorganized. prof vargas is super nice and caring but it is so hard to stay on top of the workload when the canvas stream is so sloppy. the textbook was rather hard to understand as well. prof vargas dropped me without warning after repeatedly asking for help all semester. I do not recommend.
This professor often got off-topic during lectures and sometimes made uncomfortable jokes. He has also said racial slurs on multiple occasions which made the energy of the room uncomfortable. This teacher took months to grade discussion board responses too. If Canvas doesn't autograde an assignment, don't expect to receive a grade for a long time.
Annoying class. Majority of assignments are computer graded, but when it came to assignments he had to grade himself, he claimed to be busy. Discussion boards were ungraded until the last few weeks which he claimed to "grade tough" but somehow graded all within 30 mins. Finished the finals and my midterm is still ungraded. Off track + racial slurs
He will give you a powerp
Overall professor Vargas was a phenomenal teacher I enjoyed this class and his lectures. He dwells deep into many historical subjects specifically the 60's which I suppose is his era. Regardless he's very open to discussion and will make sure to double check and correct himself if he is ever mistaken. He provided a very positive learning environment
While the professor's teaching style may not suit everyone, using Unstuck study alongside the textbook can help you ace this class. The quizzes are challenging, but engaging with the material pays off.
I had two classes with this professor. Often went off topic in lectures and did not offer the proper help when students had questions about the midterm essay. Talked often about politics even when it was unrelated. Not allowed to retake tests about the lecture. Make sure to take notes and follow study guide to help with tests.
