very knowledgeable instructor, learnt a lot from him. very nice guy,but quite a lot of memorization and not easy A.used to be in Johns Hopkins.
The only problem with his class is that he is too smart! Sometimes he moves a little too fast because of this. But he is very willing to help students and is a very nice man. He's been involved in tons of research. Focuses a lot on psychobiology and brain anatomy. I suggest you brush up on it before you take this class.
fun, interesting, and dashing. take a class with him, even if you don't have to. your life will be better because of it.
somewhat hard class, lots of information and lots of notes. notes are printed for you though which is helpful. he is really cool and easy to talk to. definitely a cool class, but you will do better with knowledge of psychobiology.
This professor is brilliant and has a real sense of humor (unlike most professor's dry humor).
Fascinating class. Brilliant professor. Pretty engaging and entertaining even early in the morning. Not an easy A, but he curves to the highest grade which helps a lot. Don't bother buying the book, he tests from his (posted) power point slides. This class is worth taking just for the information alone. I highly recommend taking his class.
Class was very interesting and teacher was very approachable and helpful. Must admit, the class was not easy and I had to work hard to obtain a B. If you really want to do well, ask him questions and read the book to supplement his notes. Also, attend class because he tends to point out what he thinks are important points. Multiple choice test too!
Team taught class; Wenk seemed ok but got off topic a lot and it was hard to tell what was going to be tested. Tests were overly hard (more like an upper level neuro-biology class than a GEC). I do not recommend this 597 but the prof might be ok for other classes.
Dr. Wenk is a great professor, though his jokes can sometimes take an different sense of humor to fully appreciate. Oh, and if he doesn't mention it in class, be sure to ask him what the strumus is, because it WILL be on a test.
Incredible teacher who really gave me an appreciation for what I was learning. He always had someway to relate it in a way that made sense. Lectures are NEVER boring!! You can tell he really loves teaching and genuninely wants his students to succeed.
His classes are NOT EASY. That being said, he is an amazing professor. This class wasn't even required for my major; I just took it b/c he was teaching. Dr. Wenk is very interesting and incredibly intelligent. You'll have to work your butt off for an A though. This is not your typical Psych class.
very much recommended, Dr. Wang is by far my fav. prof at OSU. Class isn't easy, but it's very easy to grab all concepts and fun to learn the material. My class grade was divided by 3 exams.
love this dr., he rocks at teaching. class very intresting, but the test aren't easy, like it's not an easy A class. the hardness of the tests is okay/ normal. concepts are easy to grasp, i enjoyed studying for the class since it teaches us some pretty neat stuff. dr. wenk is my fav teacher at osu through my 3 and a half years here.
Really funny, twisted sense of humor, but he uses a bit too much jargon as he lectures, especially for just a 300 level class.
Fascinating class. Wenk clearly enjoys teaching and does it well. He posts his powerpoints to follow (this does not mean you can skip class, you'll miss a lot.) Tests are absolutely not easy and the material is detailed. I worked hard for my A- (one student clearly wanted to ruin curve for everyone else.) Highly recommend the class and the prof
Dr. Wenk is my favorite professor, he's a great guy. 313 was not a difficult class for me at all, and this was due in part to my being very interested in the material, but mainly to the way it was taught. All the material is on PPTs posted online. The exams are all MC. The grading is 'your grade'/'the top grade'. GO to class, it's very informative!
Gary was definitely a great professor. His lectures were a little dry at times, but he typically inserted his twisted humor, which always made me laugh. 1 Mid-term, 1 Final and that is it, so study and go to lectures, because it is definitely a TOUGH class. I probably wouldn't take it if I didn't have a good understanding of neuroscience...
Dr. Wenk makes lectures very interesting and I always looked forward to going to this class. I took 305 without having taken 313 and I got an A. So you don't need neuroscience for this class, but I'm sure it would help. His tests are tricky but as long as you go to class and study his slides you'll be fine.
Dr. Wenk is an amazing professor, enough said. 305 is extremely interesting even though the material is not. He tells a lot of stories that relates to the material so def go to class. 1 midterm and 1 final, thats it. grading system is pretty cool too. the highest grade is equiv to a 100%.
I'm a neuroscience minor and for me this class was disorganized and rather unscientific. Dr. Wenk is not interested in teaching introductory biological psychology, he is more interested in doing a performance for an audience.
Dr. Wenk is a fabulous teacher. Very easy to understand and is quick to answer questions. I would recommend this teacher to any student needing to take this class. No book neccesary. The lectures are fun!!!
Dr. Wenk was a very interesting professor to listen to during lectures, and the first couple weeks I really enjoyed his style, until we took the first exam. His lectures are completely disorganized, you will not know what he's going to put on the exam even if you go to every class, read the book, and understand everything. Good guy but bad prof.
Dr. Wenk is a great teacher, and his lectures are really interesting. Everything on the exams is either covered in lecture, or posted online. Focus on the neurological aspects of the material, a lot of the questions on the exam come from this. Attendance isn't mandatory but helps in overall understanding.
Very nice guy and the material was interesting. Going through his Powerpoints was a bit of a chore though; he frequently types in all-caps and repeats a bunch of slides, so I recommend taking your own notes while in class. Not an easy A but the material may be interesting enough to make it worth your while.
Dr. Wenk is very nice but there was just too much material presented in the class. Two midterms and a final, no room for additional points. He did not provide any sort of guideline for study purposes either. Difficult material and overwhelming. I would not recommend this course unless you are already somewhat familiar with neuroscience.
ridiculous class was not easy at all and he makes the material so difficult acting like this is the only class in which you should study. I think that it is somewhat intersting but other than that the class is not easy to comprehend at all.
Material was overwhelming and basically impossible to study. He is very chemistry based in his lectures so unless you are really into that I would not take the class. He was not clear about the exams either. Since the final was cumulative there was over 700 slides to study. How does he think that is possible?
He is a GREAT teacher and a funny guy. If you come to class and take good notes you will do fine. He is very sraightforward in regards to his exams. Everything is from the lecture material. He also does a review session before each exam which is very helpful.
He is an excellent teacher. All his exams are based on his slides, it is not necessary to go to class, however highly recommended. He is always in his office, and willing to help you. He repeats slides often to make sure students understand the material. Two midterms and a final are your only grades in the class, no extra credit is given.
Genius. Exams are difficult, so don't be surprised by that.. all multiple choice, but he expects you to know a lot of details. His classes are very interesting, though, and he is good teacher to learn from.
Overall the best professor I've ever had at OSU, in every category. His tests are challenging, but because he presents the material in such a captivating and interesting way, that studying for his class has always been fun. Plus, he always reviews before exams and gives us pointers. He TRULY cares about his students, and is very approachable.
He's a really nice guy. The tests are difficult, but he's always in his office willing to answer questions and help out. He also lets you look over old exams and the keys, which is very useful for the final. only 2 midterms and a final though, no room for extra points but don't worry. if you do well on the final you'll be fine.
He was very nice and easy to talk to but his slides are hard to follow, and notes are super hard to take because when it comes to the test, you never know what he's going to use. There is NO study guide. The test questions are worded differently then slide information. Everything is Vague and he doesn't take attendence, and no extra credit or work.
This was a introductory neuroscience course, and the teacher did not teach on that level. If you don't have knowledge on the subject already , do not take him. He does not curve, and he's tests are extremely difficult. He does have a study guide that deems worthless for the examine. Most people in the course have C grades.
He is one the more difficult professors, but his class is definitely doable. He tests completely off his notes/lectures (not book), and it is definitely beneficial to actually attend the class. The class is curved to the highest score that someone has in the class. The class is based off of tests, no HW.
Dr. Wenk was a great lecturer and had very fair tests. The key to his class is to study smart. All of the lectures were posted online, but additional notes are necessary to do well. All of the test material is from the lecture, not the book. My only complaint is that he was not very good with answering emails. Overall, excellent professor
I would recommend any other professor for this course. He's an alright guy overall, but for an introductory course he expects you to have already mastered many of the concepts before you even begin his class.
Avoid this guy like the plague. Only grades are four exams, including a comprehensive final. Doesn't offer study guides. Expects students to have already established an understanding of the material. Overall, way too demanding for an introductory course.
I was originally enrolled to take Neuroscience with Professor Torello, but for whatever reason he decided not to teach it a day into the semester. Subsequently, everyone enrolled in his class was dumped into Wenk's class. Immediately should have dropped it when this happened.
A considerable portion of students wisely dropped out of the course more than halfway into the semester if that's any indication of what to expect from the class. My advice is to take this class with Torello if you can.
Don't take him for any course. Powerpoint slides are problematic unless you happen to enjoy studying every petty detail. Even worse, you have no idea what to study for exams. You're better off reading the textbook. Don't take anything taught by this guy.
Seems amiable enough in class, but personally I found him to possess a contemptible smugness in the way he carries himself. His class is an unpleasant experience as well.
Admittedly, this guy knows his stuff. He's just clueless as to how to teach it in an accessible manner. It is an intro level course after all, but he approaches the material as if we're PhD seeking students.
Gary is a poor excuse of a college professor. Yes he's intelligent and clearly knows what he's talking about, but that doesn't make one suited for teaching. He should stick to his research and leave the instruction to his superiors.
Miraculously I passed this course by a hair, but I wouldn't encourage others to take it. To put it into terms prospective Neuroscience students may better understand, I would rather be lobotomized than suffer through this class again.
Ridiculous course, but my major complaint is his grading . He says he grades on a curve, but it's not a true curve. Moreover, he doesn't use the standard grading scheme, which would be fine if he informed you of this on the syllabus.
He's completely out of his element when it comes to teaching.
Dr. Wenk is awesome. His tests are ridiculous but the stuff he teaches you is the foundation for every other neuro class. His lectures are more for just knowledge, you really have to study the slides outside of class because anything can show up, but he has great office hours and will explain anything 2-3 times if you go. The effort is worth it!
Dr. Wenk is clear, reasonable, and so very intelligent. If you go into the course with the mindset that it will be a challenge, you will likely find it to be very rewarding. I was thrilled to have such a quality instructor for neuroscience. Truly a world authority on the subject.
He is one of the smartest people I have ever met. This class is very hard especially if it is the first time you have heard any of the stuff. But dr.wenk tries really hard to go through things and explain them as well as he can. You don't need the book but you have to go to class to have a chance at a good grade
This class is not as hard as people seem to make it. Test are black and white, not too difficult. I do however dislike his teaching style and how he has no interest in your success in the class. Says that he will teach as if you know nothing about the brain but does not. He acts as if you already know most of the material and speeds through.
Dr. Wenk is a great teacher! The class is not hard, especially if you're a neuro major (it will be one of your easiest neuro classes). He really cares about how you do, and is willing to help if you go to his office. A very knowledgeable man who is very good at explaining things. No, he doesn't give study guides but come on we're in college now
Hands down the best and most qualified professor I've had in 4 years. Gary was a fantastic professor, and although the information was difficult, he did a great job of relating it back to things that we know about everyday life. I attended his office hours every week, and was able to take away so much information from this class.
I loved Dr. Wenk! He was very knowledgeable about the material and makes it interesting. He also loves taking time to answer questions, even if it takes up a lot of class time, and is super helpful in off hours. Genuinely wants to help. The exams get progressively harder and are based off of his lectures (so you should go and add notes to his ppts)
Dr. Wenk is an amazing professor! The man knows what he is talking about, he is one of the best in his field. He makes it very easy to understand the whole brain and helps you connect all the different parts of it. If you're a neuro major take his class because it shows whether or not you are cut out for it.
Dr. Wenk is a great teacher, but there is A LOT to learn so he speeds through it. Study with someone and ask questions. He is very patient in explaining concepts. Tests are straight forward but you need to memorize a lot. Book is not required but is useful for reference. Final grade out of highest students' grade so its curved. DO NOT SKIP LECTURE.
I was very entertained with his teaching. An insanely smart man. However, he never seemed very interested in his students' success. I felt as if I was bothering him during his office hours. Although he's a friendly man, he's intimidating to approach. I'm conflicted about how I feel about him. I earned a B+ in his class.
Funny guy, interesting class. Can come off as a bit of a jerk sometimes, but overall a very intelligent guy
The best professor on campus. One of the most knowledgeable doctors in the field, his class is taught very well. That being said, you need to come to class, take good notes, and study hard for the midterms. If you put in the effort, his class will be one of the best you will take while at OSU.
He's an extremely knowledgable professor that does research on the side. He used to teach medical students at Ohio State, and knows what he's talking about. All of the material is given to you in lecture powerpoints, and test questions come exclusively from the notes.
Really great professor. An absolutely brilliant man, one of the top in his field. Dr. Wenk keeps lectures entertaining and is very open to questions and going off on interesting tangents. Attending class is a must; lectures are PowerPoints and exam questions are based off them. Definitely my favorite professor at OSU so far.
He's a really interesting professor and he likes to crack jokes and liven up his lectures with funny comments. He's really intelligent and no doubt knows what he is talking about. If you study, the you'll definitely pass.
By far one of my favorite professors. Wenk works humor into lectures which otherwise would be dry. Everything needed for test comes from lecture - don't eve bother with textbk. That said, while the PowerPoints are posted online, Wenk adds more info about each slide during lecture so you MUST attend every time. Very relaxed prof who's test r fair.
Professor Wenk is the greatest professor I have had and will ever have. He is so knowledgable in his field and has such a desire to help you learn. He is willing to help in whatever way possible and loves to talk about the material after class and go into more detail. Wonderful man!!!
Dr. Wenk is by far my favorite professor so far. He is absolutely brilliant and I enjoy listening to him in lecture, even if they are long. He is always willing to answer questions and help when needed. He also has a very unique sense of humor that the whole class finds hilarious.
Dr. Wenk is by far my favorite professor. He is very easy to understand and has an awesome sense of humor. He puts almost everything on the powerpoints, which is nice for studying. His lectures are entertaining & extremely helpful, so coming to class is worth the effort. If nothing else, go for the inspiration. He is greatest.
Dr. Wenk is a wonderful man who cares for both his work and his students. I spent many hours in his office going over the material and just engaging in conversation. His exams are not "easy" but if you study, your scores will reflect. There is a very generous grading scale and he removed unclear questions from our final to make the grades even.
Dr. Wenk is an extremely intelligent man. He delivers lectures with enthusiasm and insight, providing you with new knowledge and wonder. With this being said, his exams test whether or not you listened to what he had to teach through his detailed lectures.
Dr. Wenk's knowledge is truly amazing. He has a great sense of humor and makes class enjoyable. That being said, don't miss class and carefully look over the PowerPoint lectures. Voice recording his lectures and visiting his past behavioral neuroscience lectures on YouTube was SUPER helpful for anything I didn't happen to catch the first time.
Extremely intelligent and funny. Great lecturer and my favorite professor so far.
Really cool dude
Dr Wenk was very accommodating to my request for additional help outside of class.
Dr. Wenk is totally brilliant. His lectures were fun as well as education. His sense of humor is odd but often entertaining. Must attend class or you will miss critical information for the exams.
By far Dr. Wenk is my favorite professor at OSU. His lectures were amazingly clear, organized and information. More importantly, he is funny and charming in class. Be sure to attend the lectures because he always reviews the material from the last class at the beginning of every lecture.
Wenk makes the class interesting and fun to attend. Overall, he tries to be fair to everyone. His office hours are always worthwhile. No question during class is ignored. He was very patient with some annoying students.
Wenk is brilliant. He rarely said "I don't know." He stays on top of stuff. His lectures were fun and are critical if you want to pass. This was the best course that I've taken at OSU in the past three years. Just come prepared to work for your A.
Dr. Wenk is by far my favorite professor at OSU. His class is difficult because it is a lot of info to take in, but if you put the work in, you'll do just fine (especially 4305). His exams can be tough, but they're not there to trick you, the class is just detail oriented, so be ready to study. He is super helpful, easy to talk to, and funny.
Professor Wenk save my butt! He spent time with me outside of his office hours. Without his help I never would have passed this course or graduated. I greatly enjoyed his lectures - I do wish that I'd attended more of them. He truly wants his students to succeed.
The best prof I've had at OSU.
This guy rocked! Great lectures that kept my attention. Wenk found interesting ways to make the material interesting and relevant. Still, the course was about drugs so how hard could that be anyway. Sorry that I could Take more classes from him.
Disclaimer: Wenk is a super nice, funny, and knowledgable guy. Additionally, I am a straight-A student. But... This class covered so much specific content I didn't know what to do with myself. I studied so hard and learned so much, and still got a C (59%) on his adjusted grading scale. If you're up for a challenge, go for it. But be warned.
Wenk is a very smart guy who is fun to talk to during office hours. This class requires a lot of effort to pass but you will learn a lot too. Do not skip class!
He is a great professor. Dr. Wenk makes sure that he answers everyone's questions and doesn't worry about rushing through the lectures, he wants to make sure you understand all of the information. But definitely need to study a lot for this class
He is probably my favorite professor I've had. He's extremely knowledgable and makes the class very fascinating and presents the material in a way that's both easy and interesting. The exams are 100% from his slides and lecture, so you most likely won't need the book. If you go to class and study, you will ace all his exams.
Dr. Wenk is honestly the best professor I've ever had. He is so inspirational and passionate about Behavioral Neuroscience. I highly recommend this guy, he is great! He teaches us by using power points and they are very helpful. This class was my most fun class!
I studied by butt off for this class and still received a D (I passed the first exam, failed the next two, and barely passed the final). Some kids found this class extremely easy, but I was not one of them. The tests are reasonable in length, but I felt like there was too much material crammed into one. Also, the only grades are from exams.
Quick paced but very interesting lectures. Would take him again, want to take his psychopharm class! I didn't find the class that hard, but some did. I think it really depends on your interest in behavioral psych and previous knowledge of basic brain anatomy, psych, etc.
I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Wenk's class! His lectures were very informative and fun. The textbook was not necessary because his powerpoints covered everything tested, but some of his powerpoints/slides could be confusing. Exams were challenging, but not impossible. Overall, a great professor!
If you're even slightly interested about what goes on in your brain, take this class. He'll make you want to change your major to neuroscience.
Awesome professor - most definitely will make you interested in the brain
Dr. Wenk is the best professor I've had at OSU. It was a pleasure to be in his class. His tests are fair, but attending lecture is key. This man is a genius, take advantage of all of his knowledge in office hours! I would go out of my way to take another class with him.
Serious love/hate relationship. He is very entertaining and you will learn a lot and love neuroscience. He is very knowledgeable and can/will answer all questions no matter how annoying you are. However, at times he can seem to be degrading towards doctors and anyone that is not him. Large/earned ego, but it can get to you sometimes so be prepared
Easily one of the nicest people I've met and he cares a lot about his students and the subject. You absolutely have to go to class to do well, his lecture slides he posts are very vague if you don't have your own notes from him elaborating. There is a lot of information too and you have to study a lot and hard to understand it all.
Dr. Wenk is one of the best professors at OSU. Very knowledgable and funny during his lectures. Exams are tough but fair because he usually curves them.
First thing to note: this class has a different grading scale: A 88%, A- 85%, and so on. Second thing: he doesn't go off any textbook, instead using his own PowerPoint slides. My advice: either print off the slides and take notes on them during lecture or take notes on your laptop and transfer them to printed slides to study. Helped a lot.
If you love the brain, you will love Dr. Wenk's class! His class was by far my favorite and I looked forward to going every time. I recommend taking advantage his office hours, because he is amazing to get to know. To succeed in this class, attend every class and take as many notes as you can for reference on some of the vague slides.
You will do very well if you study. Grades are determined by the tests. All the material is based off of the power points and what he says. Going to office hours will help because he repeats content from lecture then.
Go to the the lectures, memorize the slides and you will get an A.
Absolutely loved this professor. He was always able to keep lectures interesting and would work in funny stories and examples. Difficult class because the only grades are tests, but overall I still enjoyed the course.
He is truly amazing. He knows just about everything to know about neuroscience. He has amazing stories and gives great lectures. You have to study all the material and remember a lot, but the class is awesome!
Great Professor. Made lectures very interesting, and always was willing to answer questions. He really cares about his students and what he is teaching. Exams were fairly tough and detailed, but everything was from the slides.
Dr. Wenk is very knowledgable and down-to-earth with his students. Lecture is pretty important, as he explains a lot that aren't in his slides. You could probably pass without going to lecture, but I wouldn't recommend it because they're just so interesting. There's also just a lot of material covered in this class, so going to lecture helps.
Dr. Wenk is by far one of the most incredible professors you will ever have. He is a tough professor, but it was 100% worth every second. He is absolutely hilarious and you learn so much. Take him if you have the chance
Dr Wenk is wonderful! His class was really difficult for me, but he is hilarious and makes the content relatable. Definitely go to class, it helps to hear him explain it rather than teach yourself from the slides. Only grades are tests, so gotta study a lot, for days beforehand in order to do well. I would definitely take another class with him!
Dr. Wenk was great; he made the material incredibly interesting and very easy to learn. The overall grade is intimidating because it's only based on two midterms and a final, but his exams are very fair and straight out of his slides. He and his TAs offer lots of office hours for extra help and he is one of the most personable professors I've had.
He is good lecturer but the class is VERY EXHAUSTING. you'll have to read over 300 SLIDES PER MIDTERM(this is no exaggeration). Tests r REALLY DETAILED (70 questions long) and final (which is about 140 questions) is CUMULATIVE so you'll have to review 800 SLIDES. btw NO CURVE cuz avg is 88. Only take it if you have the time to study for it.
