very helpful and understanding, great person
gives out good notes, good test pointers, textbook is for diagrams only
Very funny guy, notes are extremely clear and helpful, approachable
great instructor. Reveals ancient Chinese secrets to help teach
He's really helpful and nice!
Intelligent man, but cannot explain things clearly
Really nice guy! Easy going and funny, but you learn a lot!
Nice going guy, but his lectures and notes need more details.

the 1st teacher that can get my attention in class!! very intelligent man.. and love all of his ancient chinese secret.
hes so funny and nice but exams are hard
very interesting course.
Enthusiastic teacher, makes lecture fun, cares about students
great teacher, gives you notes before class and goes through them. all tests and quizes are on the notes he gives you. Has a great personallity and teaching methods.
funny & interactive guy..tries to get everyone to participate...gives out typed notes, quizzes & tests are directly off them...gotta love his ancient chinese secrets =) he's very helpful & approachable...u gotta love him ^_^
hes funny and really listen to the nursing implications, it will really help out for later on!
very good for nursing students. he knows everything it seems. makes classes funny as well
wish he taught 1215. i would prefer copying notes, rather than the typed notes bc they sometimes had errors. however, nicest guy, very funny, fair teacher. genuinely wants everyone to do well.
Garyen is an excellent teacher who spreads the gospel of Biology to anyone who wants to learn. Save money and don't buy the text as he hands out notes and wants you to know what are on them so just read the text in the library. He is hard but fair!
best teacher ever!!! good notes and interesting class. Pop quizes aren't the best but they help you prep for the midtems/final
awesome guy. gets class involved. interesting and fun lectures.. great teacher.. deinetly recommend him!!
Mr. Chong is the nicest, most understanding teacher I've had at Langara. He TRULY cares about his students, and about what he teaches. Funny & interesting classes. Hard, but any BIO class is hard, so it's not his teaching. I RECOMMEND HIM TO EVERYONE!
Exams are tough, but you will learn a lot from him
He is the best biol teacher. I wish he teached biol1215.
GREAT TEACHER..... Highly recommended. Interesting lectures, interactive classes. Caring person, who helps and supports students!!
best teacher i had at langara. his notes are useful, esp for the quizzes. his tests are easy as long as you know your stuff. hes extremely helpful, and he makes the class interesting
Good Teacher hard tests but just study the notes and youll do well
OK SERIOUSLY, IF YOU WANNA FAIL THIS COURSE GET HIM...But dont **** later...I WARNED U!!! D grade garanteed
Typed out notes, multiple choice exams. He's kooky and friendly and helpful. Fair marker. Love his Chinese proverbs. Very animated. Makes for an enjoyable class, and a fair bit of studying. Hey it's science.
Great guy, but not the best teacher for this course. Typed notes are handy but breif, tricky tests on random info. Study hard, read the text and you'll be fine. An "A" will require intensive memorization of random info.
if you enjoy biology you will do fine. Extra time is required and independent studying unassisted by him.(study outside your notes) all though he doesn't know the text i totally recommend using www.campbellbiology.com do the activities tests and quizzes. you'll be fine
Garyen is a great guy, very funny... BUT watch out for his weekly quizzes and midterm exams, they are SOOOO hard!!! and the final exam is culmulative... which means ch 1 - 11, 24 is on it, thats about 400-500 pages of memorization. If you dont need this course, dont take it!
He is an interesting teacher and his classes are interesting. He does go over material a little too quickly, and his weekly quizzes are ridiculous. You have to remember the most random stuff that he may have mentioned for about a minute in his lectures.
i didn't do so well in bio 12 + i expected college bio to be super hard, but garyen's class is the ONLY bio course I've enjoyed! Highly recommended, you'll laugh, learn, and be interested.

very very good prof. the best for bio 1115.all of his exams are multiple choice fairly easy...all questions are straight off of his notes...if you're good at memorizing info. take him he's also funny and his class is never boring.
Dynamic & clever guy, lots of experience, interesting stories, fun classes to attend. Problems enter with typed notes that are unclear at the best of times, and misleading at the worst, forcing the student to read the (excellent) text to double-check everything in the notes. HARD TESTS ON RANDOM INFORMATION. A students get Bs and Cs.
Great person, funny, nice but the teaching wasn't great. The course is pretty hard, & I felt like we were rushing through the material the whole semester. The worst part was the midterms( lots of random questions), good thing they were only worth 30% of the course. Quizzes (20%) lab (30%) should save you.I'm an A student who was greateful for the C+.
Keep things clear and doesnt stray off with topics outside of biology!
His tests only seem random if you do not take common sense to class with you. Study the material and don't let him stray during class; if he starts to wander off, seriously, don't let him go too far! Get him back on track before it's too late. See him after class for words of wisdom, he is a genuinely caring person and a good listener.
I didn't like Garyen's class at all! Personally, i dont think he's very organized. He's very confusing in class, has very HARD quizzes (all fill in the blanks, vague questions!) and not to mention jumps all over the place in class. He mentions stuff once and wants you to know it for the exams..OMG. I recommend you take cell bio somewhere else...
Awesome teacher, he has a lot of enthusiasm as a teacher and provides a very good foundation for whatever it is you are learning. He progresses at the pace of the students and always ask for questions/confirmation. An overall AWESOME teacher.
Awesome teacher. Very friendly. He know's his stuff very well. He makes each class fun. It gets boring sometimes but he tries hard to catch your attention and involve everyone. Just study hard, read a lot, and ask questions, he'll make sure you leave knowing everything you need to know.
Funny guy, but his exams do not reflect what he teaches in class. His exams come from a data bank and the terminology is often quite different from the text and his notes.
Garyen is a good guy and his lectures are interesting, BUT if he goes off topic, you lose part of a lecture and have to make sure to learn it on your own. The exams are ridiculously hard - there are a lot of multiple choice with a, b, c then a & b or a, b, & c. I studied twice as much as for 1190 (w/ Bridges) and I only got a B+ compared to an A.
He is very knowledgeble and helpful.
wonderful teacher best teacher you ever had understanding helpful. If you study you will do very well in his class even if you dont really study you will still do ok. I went to class like in total maybe 9 times & managed to pass i amn't the type of person who is ever the teachers pet take his class HIS TEST ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE :)
For those who're gonna take 2415, don't be fooled by the ratings. His cellbio is hard. he expects you to memorize every little details. Quizzes are fill in the blanks, lots of terminology. He's passionate and all but watch out for ur GPA. For ppl who are used to gettin As & A+, this is the course you'll be expecting a B or B+.
Tests are hard but fair. Quizes keep you up to date with readings. Chong teaches in a way that you can remember the info. A+P 1190/91 is a LOT of memorization, but he makes the material interesting. One of the best profs I've ever had. Highly recommend.
DISASTROUS. For people that rate him good- DO NOT confuse the man's niceness with his ability to teach. He is disorganized, off-topic, tells you to study from notes, qs from text. Asks obscure details. Worst experience ever. Should be banned from teaching. Most of class disgusted with him, save a few teachers pets. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Good teacher, explained everything clearly. He gave out quizzes once a week which for some people I'm sure was a pain in the ass but all you had to do was study for half an hour the night before and the quiz would be super easy because it was based on the notes that he gave out in class. Basically, TAKE HIS CLASS if you get the chance.
Was so interested in learning about TCM (traditional Chinese Medicine) but he completely skipped over it and when on about the legal system of Cdn. Yes, legal sys. is a part of the course but it seriously the course advertisement said CA for a reason. my advise = don't take the course, if you do, just read the notes his lecture is the notes.
Incredibly engaging teacher in class. Sometimes he'll be really tired near the end of the semester and it will show. The textbook is ESSENTIAL as he knows it by heart. There will be in odd test question that will be an innocent looking fact from the book. Know the material before each class. A lot of biochemical names must be known.
He is very engaging, and very entertaining. He may go a little too fast in his lectures, and you will often burn straight through the material, as there is much to cover. It is easy to fall behind, but to keep you in good shape, he gives weekly quizzes which really encourage you to keep up. The textbook and his notes are quite similar.
He is super nice, willing to answer any questions, his lecture is kinda boring because he just reads off the notes he gives u... His exams are all multiple choice. Weekly chapter quiz help u alot to prepare for the big exams, everything is based on the notes he gives u ! Easy if u study!
Pretty good class. If you keep up with all the readings well, study for weekly quizzes it's fine. It gets harder in the middle..and easier in the final exam again
Garyen is an awesome instructor. He is very helpful with questions and is funny telling stories during lecture. He asks if anything is unclear to you in every lab, and he never cancels a class. He is quite the Guru.
Garyen is a great prof who takes the time to encourage you. Engaging in class and uses great examples when the topic was difficult to understand. He will always take the time to explain things in more detail. Show up to class and study and you will do well.
awesome prof! as long as you keep up with his weekly quizes you'd do well in his class. he has fill in the blank weekly quizes which are tricky sometimes but the exams are all multiple choice. when i don't understand something, he can explain stuff in many analogies which help me understand the concept
weekly quizes really help when it comes to his exams because you don't have to study as much. his exams were fair, some were in the textbook so you do actually have to read it. His final was the hardest in my opinion because it's accumulative..2 ques each for 11 chapters and the last 4chapters (we didn't have an exam on yet) are 20 questions each
Great prof! The material is quite dull, but he manages to keep it interesting and entertaining. The weekly quizzes are entirely based on his noes (which are super helpful). Final was surprisingly easy. If you take bio, you need to take it with Garyen.
You won't ever regret taking a class with Garyen! He is really outgoing and cracks jokes constantly which makes the class that much more enjoyable. Weekly quizzes prevent you from falling behind. He is the type of teacher that actually wants you to succeed and always encourages you, so thankful to have had him teach me twice.
Great teacher, engaging and funny. The weekly tests were very helpful and his exams were reflective of his notes and lectures. GREAT GREAT TEACHER
You will never achieve perfection in Chong's class even if you study all of his class materials. His exams are on the harder end of the spectrum. However, his class is quite interesting. Work hard, and you should do fine.
One of the best profs I've had. Garyen is super helpful and super funny. Go to class, read through the textbook figures and you should be fine.
THIS IS NOT AN EASY COURSE. It has similar structure with other courses, 2 midterms and final. Weekly quizzes and clicker questions every class which help to keep you on track. Garyen is the most caring prof I have ever had in langara, "Don't drink and drive, call your mother"
If you are taking 5 courses, I wouldn't recommend this course. It is hard, overwhelming at time and you are constantly tested which becomes annoying after the 1st month. Lab component is basically teaching yourself. He gives 2 midterms, 1 final, tests during class, quiz every thursday. Nice but too much testing. A bit OCD on testing.
The sweetest guy ever. He relates all the notes to actual clinical stories and answers all your questions for you. Its not an easy course. Study diagrams! they're on the midterm and final. Grayens the best! Great sense of humor
He's a great instructor!!!! Knows what he's talking about! Easy exams as it's all multiple choice! Study diagrams and the lab component is easy as well if you study all the notes given. Discipline yourself. It's a hard course, but everything is laid down for you to study and get good marks!
Garyen is a GREAT teacher. His lectures were always interesting and he related a lot of the material to things we would see in clinical for nursing. His exams are all MC and weekly quizzes are fill in the blank style. Only complaint- His notes are TERRIBLE and he doesn't give out the powerpoint slides that include diagrams.
He's a sweet guy, but his notes are not very helpful. Only thing the notes are good for are the weekly quizzes, be prepared to go through the textbook for the test (all MC) or you probably won't be getting a decent grade.
Not sure why Garyen is rated difficult by so many. I retook this course with him and he is easy peasy compared to the other profs!!! All his exams are multiple choice and his weekly quizzes are easy marks. He's the sweetest man and very reasonable when it comes to marks. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Garyen is adorable! Midterms were fair. His notes aren't very good, so you will use the textbook a lot for the lab portion. Weekly quizzes sometimes have strange wording or multiple right answers, so make sure to challenge it if someone marked you wrong. Garyen obviously cares a lot about his students and is very passionate about A&P.
I am a first year, and usually biology is not my thing. However, garden makes your lectures fun !!! biology is meant to be a tough course so yes you will need to study. For his quizzes, its based on his notes. For his midterm, its based on the textbook and the diagrams!! diagrams are a must to study!!! otherwise, an overall excellent teacher!
Garyen makes the course very interesting. It's the first time I've had a great lecturer. I think hes better than bill nye. However his notes suck ass because most of the stuff in it aren't in his exams and bc theyre brief. His exams are like 80% anatomy, 20% Physiology, so study the diagrams well. Exam's not hard, but they DO cover a lot of info.
He has a good timing for his courses and he goes by a good schedule so you always know what you will be doing in class. He gives weekly quizzes based off his notes, but it's good to supplement it with readings from the textbook. Make sure you do the learning objectives for the midterms/exams as those are crucial for the exams, also lots of diagrams
Lectures are interesting and organized. He gives you the notes so all you need to do is to listen and follow along with his slides. His notes pretty basic and are only good for his quizzes. READ THE TEXTBOOK FOR HIS EXAMS. Make sure you study the diagrams and tables! Overall a great lecturer. The course is tough but Garyen makes it bearable!
Take Anatomy with Garyen!!! Garyen is a very sweet man. He makes his lectures interesting and engaging. I loved taking this class with him. He makes it clear as to what you need to study. STUDY ALL DIAGRAMS AND PICTURES IN THE TEXT! "Call your mother and dont drink and drive"
How to do well: Read notes before class; Read the book right after the class and study the DIAGRAMS (whats mentioned); Don't study 1 chapter in 1 day (break it down--study everyday); his slides are on slideshare; focuses on anatomy in exams. treat the lab like a sep course. Do manual before class & study all the models/slides/procedures! Good luck
He just really makes your day, and makes the class really fun to be in. Not such a tough marker as long as you study. It's just a lot of material, as if you're passing through a storm for an entire semester! If you're only taking this one course for a semester then you can totally get an A. If three or more.. then GG for you and there goes your GPA
Best bio prof hands down. So thorough with his notes and lectures. Gives the best examples to really make you think and remember the content. However, the class isn't easy. Gotta put in effort if you want to do well. He makes the class enjoyable and it isn't a bore. I always fall asleep during bio lectures, but I haven't yet with any of his.
His notes suck, so you have to use the text as the main source, which sucks because that's really time-consuming. You have to read the text because hes one of those teachers whos detailed on their exams. Also, try to memorize the listed diagrams. Don't skip bc there's an iclicker portion in your grade (10%). Anything can be the diff between A or B!
Garyen is so sweet! I took this course while taking 3 other courses and working full time.. Don't recommend doing that. There is a ton of material. His notes aren't very good, so a lot of time has to be spent reading the text. I found his quizzes tough!! But he made lectures fun. Don't know how, but I managed to pass without studying at ALL.
Garyen is a very fun teacher and makes learning biology fun but make sure you study before every lecture so that you can keep up with the class. Weekly quizzes aren't fun but it tells you what's on the midterms & final exam so it's very helpful. Don't skip class too, he goes through lectures fast but precise.
Love him!
Garyen is a really cool teacher that you can ask anything about because he's that chill. His notes, however, are a bit hard to follow through (because I am more of a visual learner) because they lack any diagrams. His exams are all multiple choice which are great but be sure to study the diagrams from the textbook!
Garyen has a big heart and he really does care about you. His midterms were mostly diagram based, and his lecture note as pretty condensed. He's really good at explaining concepts. Study hard though because his quizzes are fill in the blanks so u have to know your stuff. If you study hard you will do well.
His lecture is awesome! It's just students need to pay attention and spend time reviewing. It's just Biol 1190 is a challenging course, but not the prof.
Garyen is such a lovely man! He is the nicest and funniest prof ive had. That being said, BIOL 1190/91 are really difficult and require a lot of studying! regardless of the prof , youre still going to need to work your ass off to get a good grade! With Garyen, his tests have A LOT of diagrams so make sure to know them well.
Although the course is intense and heavy, Garyen makes Biology more interesting. Study every week for quizzes from his notes and his midterms are from the textbook all mc. Do not miss his class as you will miss iclicker questions. Final is hard and 80% are not diagrams as his midterms.
Best teacher at Langara that ive had so far. He's so funny and really cares about his students. His tests are very visual they involve lots of the diagrams and pictures seen and used in the textbook. Garyen is my fav!:)
Garyen is a great professor! He really cares for his student's wellbeing and is always willing to help. His midterms are basically textbook based, so either you read it or you don't. 1190 itself is a challenging course, put in the effort and you'll get a good grade.
Garyen is an awesome prof! Bio 1190 is a difficult course no matter what professor you take it with, so I'd highly recommend taking it with Garyen. iClicker marks each class, so make sure you attend every lecture, and weekly fill in the blank quizzes which are quite difficult, so make sure you study for them.
He's super funny, and really cares about his students. 1190 is a difficult course in itself, but Garyen teaches well. Difficult fill in the blank quizzes every week and constant iclicker questions, but they help you stay on track with studying.
Garyen teaches from a more clinical perspective (ie. what would happen if a physiological process was interrupted?) which is effective. His iclicker questions are worth 10% of the final grade but they're not too hard. Study for his weekly quizzes (probably the hardest fill in the blank quizzes you'll ever write) and you'll be fine.
I'm a term 1 nursing student at Langara, and I'd like to say that he's made my nursing courses easier bc he incorporates pathophysiology in his lectures. Pros: all exams are multiple choice (except lab exams); he's funny/caring. Cons: GET READY TO READ THE TEXT! Advice: study like you're gonna be a nurse one day....
I had Garyen for Bio 1191. This course is very detailed and difficult regardless of the prof. However, Garyen made this course interesting, fun and applied to concepts to real clinical scenarios (easier to remember). If you can, definitely take this course with Garyen! You have to work hard, but it is doable. The exams are all from the textbook
Experienced, but sloppy & lazy at teaching. He reads off his many slides. Cuts off student questions and can't answer them clearly. Many errors on tests. Wording of questions are confusing & vague. Likes to be chummy with students. Material is tough. You will have to teach yourself from the textbook and put in A LOT of your own time to do well.
He's a really funny guy and his lectures are pretty enjoyable. There is a lot of material and he does iclicker questions in class. The material is not that hard to grasp, but there is a lot of memorization and some of his questions can be a little bit tricky. That being said all his midterms were 100% multiple choice.
He is THE BEST. Such a sweet guy that I enjoy going to class. The weekly quizzes seem like a pain, but its good for studying and you will see them on your exams and remember them. The course in general is tough and you need to work for a good mark anyways, but Garyen makes is funny and makes lectures interesting. Iclickers every class (easy marks)!
Take Biology 1190 with Garyen and you will not regret it. Bio 1190 is generally course heavy but he makes it interesting. His Exams is based from the textbook covering the most important things in his lecture and in his powerpoint which likely ends up on exam. His Quiz is harder compared to his exams and their is is iclicker but they will help U!!
I found his lectures a little dry and hard to understand due to his accent. I also had to teach myself a bit of the material. However, the exams were fair and multiple choice! The weekly quizzes were all over the place though (he sometimes included topics we didn't discuss). Overall, a very charming guy that makes a difficult course bearable (:
Garyen is very sweet and hilarious in class although he is completely different online. Took both 1190 and 1191 with him, and his exams are fine but the quizzes are horrendous. In class as well as online, his quizzes are very challenging and if it weren't for them, my grades would be much better.
Very good professor. You can learn a lot and get a decent grade if you put in your work. but 1191 is a heavy course no matter who is the professor.
I had him online for summer 2020. He is awful. His recorded lectures are him just reading off of his slides. I stopped watching because it was better to read the textbook and make my own notes myself. When asking him questions, he is unclear and I feel like he doesn't really listen to the full question. Quizzes are brutal; exams are fair. Beware!
Don't listen to any of the negative reviews. Garyen Chong is the best biology professor at Langara and he is a very fair and lenient marker. Read the textbook and you will succeed.
Although his quizzes were challenging, his exams were manageable. The recorded lectures are too long and you're better off making your own notes from the textbook. I had no problem getting a hold of him via email. I wouldn't recommend him if you are expecting him to go above and beyond on explaining complex concepts.
Students only like Garyen because he is funny and caring in lectures. In terms of actually learning something in his class, chances are you probably have to learn it yourself. He's forgetful and sometimes tests you on material that you haven't even learned in lecture and not even found in the textbook which is unfair. He's not as hype as you think.
Garyen is an amazing prof, he really cares about his students. He is super funny and understanding. I always looked forwards to his lectures, so if you can take HSCI 1140 with him!
I had Garyen half in person and half online for my semester. In person, he's really informative and teaches the material very well. His online class is a bit frustrating because his quizzes are really hard, but his exams were manageable. If you have the chance take him in person, otherwise take a different prof for online because he'll be difficult
I took his class for second semester even after reading the comments and I strongly recommend not taking his class. First off there's no leniency and doesn't even communicate properly on what's gonna be on the midterm. His lectures online looks like chicken scratch and its unreadable.
The quizzes were unnecessarily difficult and discouraging. The lecture slides were only a summary and to do well on the exam you were expected to kind of memorize every paragraph of the textbook just in case.
Garyen is overall a nice prof that tries to do his best in an online setting. Though, if you're expecting anything beyond going over simple questions on the quizzes/midterms then you should probably look elsewhere. To do well, read the textbook, memorize diagrams, and get used to his wording on quizzes.
Just terrible not the worst but not the best. Nothing is good about his teaching, I studied for everything thing. Cant believe I payed like $400 for this course and I had to teach myself everything as this prof is so hard to communicate to. Lec vids are so boring and dry and u prolly will zone off after a min. Ya dont take this class unless ur dumb
Garyen is super sweet. He provides detailed power points and video lectures. Understand the material by also reading the textbook. since this is a lecture heavy course.
I had Garyen for both 1190 and 1191 during the online sem. He's a very nice sweet old man who is willing to help his students learn better and he was very accessible outside class hours. I went to a lot of office hours to go over my quizzes and midterms and he was very helpful every time! Most of his tests are pretty much MC, short answers and FnB
Horrible experience, goes on long tangents that aren’t supplementary to the current lecture; and incoherent wording for both quizzes and midterms. I would also like to mention that his quizzes are all fill in the blank are almost impossible to ace, his midterms are 100+ questions long with diagram questions he never went over in lecture for.
I took his Biol1190 during the online sem and it was just terrible. First, his lecture videos are 2-3 hours long. His quizzes were somehow harder than the actual tests. Felt like I had to study the entire course myself through the textbook. Everyone trying to get a high gpa for nursing, take Julia Wong instead. Don't waste your time and money.
The textbook is your bestfriend!Memorize it, not his notes.Put his notes AND the textbook into online flashcards.Consistent studying is key. Know your stuff well before quizzes so when the exam comes its just revision and diagram memorization. Its a self-study course: lectures= SUPPLEMENTS to your learning Don'tblame the prof if you don't work hard
Personally would not prefer having a teacher who expects us to "self-study" majority of the time because they're supposed to BE THERE and guide us to the best of their ability. They don't necessarily need to spoon-feed us, but at least understand that all students are at different academic levels. Not everyone can learn the material on their own
Garyen is a really kind man but his lectures are mainly just him going through the powerpoint presentation and not elaborating on material. Tests are hard and long, and he doesn't give that much practice beforehand or specify what to study
totally have to self teach, he doesnt explain stuff at all. tests are really long and hard
Read and take notes from the textbook weekly, even though Garyen does not mention it. Tests mostly based on information in textbook and slides are for review, additional information. Quizzes are tougher than midterm, many of quiz ques are not on midterm, just follow his learning outcomes to study for midterm. Much easier marking for midterm test.
Garyen might just be the nicest man you'll ever meet. Garyen's lectures are very surface level and super broad which makes it difficult to study for exams. I did find his tests to be on the more simple side, weekly quizzes are difficult and infuriating, be prepared to read and study along with the course outcomes provided. Participate in class!
Garyen is one of the nicest professors and cares a lot about students (Miss him lots!). However, I found his quizzes extremely difficult. His midterms are slightly easier than quizzes but there are numerous diagrams you need to memorize. His lectures could be a bit slow and boring as well, but Garyen will make little jokes here and there!
This guy needs to retire. This guy can't hear or understand what you're saying so you have to shout at him. He won't say something about a part in a diagram but he asks you to label it and what its function is. The textbook is a better teacher. The lecture and his explanations won't help you much. He does not give part marks on exams.
Garyen is respectful and cares about his students. Don't miss classes because the iclickers gives you points for attendance in additional to correct answers to questions. Follow the chapter learning outcomes. Know your notes well. Weekly quizzes needs to know details from the class notes. I see him in his office hours and he is very helpful.
knowledgeable, don't miss class, learn your material everyday, caring
honestly enjoyed this course, the bad comments are sort of exaggerated, just manage your time and ask for help when needed he's a nice guy here to help you succeed
I can't say good enough things about Garyen. He is my favourite professor. He has decades of personal experience, rather than just having textbook-based knowledge like other professors. Always welcoming in office hours and wants his students to succeed. He may retire soon in a few years, so give it a try! I wish I had more classes with him!
Garyen is a kind soul, however, his tests are tough. You need to read the textbook and this course is very content heavy. Make sure to prepare beforehand for the lecture portion and lab portion.
Garyen is such a cool person, and as a prof. There are certain topics that can be quite difficult, but if you study hard itll b worth it— bio is difficult in general. hes worth a shot :)!
Don't be fooled by the hate! People might complain about is his quiet voice, but as the semester progressed he got more comfortable and louder. He applies our learning to the outside world and involves students to explain concepts (I was once a chromosome.) He tells you what to study for upcoming exams and you can just study the slides. Sweet guy!
In my opinion, he was a bit quiet, so make sure to sit in the front rows. However, his lectures are A+ overall, as he also added his real life experiences to it too. Also, he's super nice, so don't feel afraid to visit him during office hours! IMO, nicest prof I've had here!
I should not have trusted the ratings that say: "do not trust the bad reviews".
He's one of the sweetest professors I've ever met! At first, he spoke a bit quietly during the first two weeks, but he improved after that. He incorporates his clinical experiences into class, which I personally enjoy, often with jokes. The quizzes and exams are fair because all the material is covered in his notes. Overall, highly recommend! ^—^
His lectures can be a little unfocused with anecdotes, but it's clear what will be on exams and he sticks to whats provided in his slides. Always willing to help during office hours and has a lot of experience in the field so for those going into nursing he's pretty interesting to talk to.
