Exellant prof. Amazingly arrogant but in a good way.
What? He's NOT hot. Nice guy, though. Lectures are a bit hard to listen to because he pauses after every few words and it's easy to drift off. But his English is improving. Clear. I wish I could remember his TA's name, she was fabulous!
WOW, THE BEST SPEAKER I HAVE EVER HEARD. Speaks as if he is in a SHAKESPEAR play or something, that is how CAPTIVATING his lectures are. Curriculum wise, his course puts EVERYTHING in one basket... 50% for ONE essay and 50% Final Exam.
Not only was the class interesting, but he wins the hottest prof at ubc award from me. ;-)
This is a really amazing course! His lectures are very good and he uses overheads, which is helpful. As for hotness, he gets my vote 'cause of the sexy spanish accent. Appearance wise he's not too spectacular, he dresses like my DAD (shudder).
Gaston Gordillo is a good lecturer and a very clear speaker, but the final is worth too much for a first year course. I think his sweater vest/professor gear makes him look hot in a Latin American Cat Stevens sort of way.
AMAZING COURSE! Gordillo is a phenomenal speaker, the readings are kinda boring at times but the overall message is awesome. This class must be taught in high schools - It teaches of acceptance of other cultures, religions, races and genders. Awesome!
He's an amazing teacher. He's interesting, as is the course material which he teaches in a a very interesting way. The readings can get kind of boring. Be prepeared to hear "that's a very good point" a lot. He also looks and talks like a pirate.
His course is generic and doesn't teach anything that any well read University student shouldn't already know. The grade is based on a final and two 4 page papers. Too much reading, it ends up be close 100-150 a week.
Not Hot. Lectures are boring, a complete waste of time. Sometimes hard to understand him because of his accent. Not at all creative in his teaching methods.
This guy is all right, but not stellar. I found him to be repetitive, especially with the themes. Also a bit arrogant. TA David Geary is awesome though. And hearing Gaston's name inspires me to break out into Disney song.. "No one's slick as Gaston.
If you like Latin men... he is the hottest prof.
is this guy single?
Good teacher, bad grading scheme (final exam and two essays). There was no textbook, but a lot of readings. Some of the readings were surprisingly interesting, however, don't try to start reading a few days before the final.

Great prof - easy to understand, clear and loud voice (I sat at the very back) and interesting stories to go along with lessons. Some boring readings, but most were good. Gave HIGH marks! Always cheerful in class.

Very clear, a good teacher. Oh, and he's hot.
Gaston was awesome. He has a real love for anthropology and he makes the course fun and interesting... not bad to look at either! lol
Nice guy, engaging lectures, good readings, easy final. Always willing to answer a question and explain stuff more clearly. Makes some interesting fashion choices, but still one of the hottest profs on campus!
made a potentially boring course extremely interesting with his choice of topics and his design of the course. Great prof and an amazing course!
Such a great class and great Prof.I recommend it to anyone. The articles from course package were interesting&outline of course is really clear. The lectures correspond quite nicely to each topic and he goes over the articles in class. The T/A'z mark most of the work but they're really nice so is prof
One word: gorgeous. (the course isn't bad either)
Okay class. The readings vary from being pretty interesting to very boring and tedious. The marks rely more on the TA than the prof. Lucky enough to get a good TA so discussions were pretty interesting. The lectures are pretty useless and don't amount to much towards the final.
super hot....smokin guy...i love him...
The course material starts off boring, but by the end of the semster this class became my favourite. Gordillo is so cute and loves what he teaches. I didn't think it was possible to have a constant smile while lecturing. The movies are amazing as is the course layout and organization. Such an interesting course, changes the way you look at people!
Great professor, you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. No textbook in this class was a plus, watch alot of movies, good lectures. Very general class, he doesn't focus on anything specific. He also has alot of experience doing anthropology fieldwork, interesting to hear his experiences.
Wow.. im so in love not only with him but the class :) he's a great prof... at first i had no idea what the class was about before i took the course but then after a few lectures it all became clear.. its really opens you mind to a different way of thinking.. everyone should take this course!!! Its been my favorite class.
So charming it makes him hot. The class was very thought provoking and interesting though I found he's a tough marker on essays. Defenitely worth your time though.
A gorgegous class with a wonderful prof. I love the way he conveyed the anthropological concepts because it's understandable and interesting. As the previous entry mentions, it changes the way you think. I learnt how to look at different matters at greater depth and i admit i broaden my vision ever since. If you have a chance, take him.
Hot, charming, clear, smart, fair, and helpful!Oh ya his accent is cute.Take this course if you can.It will broaden your view and maybe change your perception about people around the world. He's the best prof I have seen in UBC so far.5 stars!!!I wish my math profs were like him.=)
Brilliant. Completely changed my view. Really interesting, thought-provoking lectures. No textbooks but quite a few articles to read. Some of the articles were really drab but you shouldn't let that discourage you. SO glad I took the class. Maybe 2 assignments? He expressed the ideas very clearly and thoroughly
Incredibly personable and articulate - not to mention totally sexy!!

really awesome prof who thoroughly explains his views and gets the class going with great discussion. hes yummy to look at too!!! ehhee
Extremely easy assignments and Exams. Made his lectures very interesting. One of the best profs i've ever had
If you get a chance you should definitely take this class with professor Gordillo. He is charming, knowledgable and very very helpful. I truly feel as if I have learned a lot about Latin America. Some of the readings are boring but he clarifies everything in discussion. Just make sure you ask about the things you are confused.
Great prof! Easy, interesting class. And he is extremely nice to look at to boot!
Excellent Prof, I really really loved this class about contemoprary social problems in Latin America.. essays were never too long and the reading was actually very interesting for the most part. Not the easiest marker but fair.
Loved the class, marking was fair although not super easy and the readings and video class material was great. I think everyone should take this class if they have the chance.

He relied on his TA a lot, who marked quite hard. Hardly lectured at all, most of class was either group presentations or discussion. Fairly clear lectures, but sometimes talked at a higher level than was appropriate for a 3rd year anth class......It's not my major, after all. Overall, not bad but pretty tough marker.

His accent is god's gift to UBC.
I thought that the class was just ok. I wish Gordillo lectured more and relied less on the students to present and create discussion.
All I have to say is that this guy is the hottest professor I've ever been taught by.
A good guy, and his lectures were somewhat interesting, but the reading was too much, and I'm still not sure what I learned...
best prof i had for this year. a lot of readings, but most of them are really interesting and cover a broad range of stuff in cult. anth. essays are fairly easy and so is final. I knew people who read like half the readings and still got a decent mark.
Good professor with TONS of reading but so so fine!! the sexiest accent it is so hard to concentrate on what he is actually saying, constantly smiles while he talks, so adorable!! teaches clearly and the sexiness is just unbearable!!
Very passionate about what he is teaching! Easy to understand, and very approachable. He actually listens to students when they speak up in class! oh and of course, he is soo fine! especially when he speaks in spanish!
Very nice guy...his lectures are very boring though and the attendance is mandatory!TA was a very hard marker...
What is Latin America? A) A paradox B) Something we'll address next class or C) All of the above C for the A+! I was very interested in this subject coming into this class but I now dread every Tuesday and Thursday, waiting to listen to 81 minutes of the same. Ask questions you say, don't just sit in the back of the classroom - tried it. No
Good prof. You know what he expects of you and the topics we covered were really interesting. A ton of reading though ? definitely keep up so you don?t try to cram it all the week before the exam. And yeah, sooo hot ? he?s the only prof I?ve ever gone to during office hours, haha.
Went into the class with high hopes: interesting topic, hot teacher... Could not have been more let down. He basically summarises readings or runs off on useless tangents that aren't even interesting. Every lecture seemed like a waste of an hour, and I finished the class unsure of what I even learned.
Very interesting course and nice guy. Lectures were interesting and I don't remember surfing the internet in his class so that is a good sign! Regardless he did not influence my grades because in my course we had TAs do all the marking.
Good prof. Boring at first and almost regretted not dropping but eventually everything came together. Take notes during lectures, it helps when you're writing your papers. Molly was a great TA. (I believe all the TA's were pretty nice as well) You are more involved with the TA's who mark your work and if you get Molly, she is a fair marker.
Absolutely great professor. He knows his materials and how to give it to you in the best way possible. It has depth but it can be a bit mundane sometimes. Readings = interesting; time to ask questions during class = not much. But he is extremely personable & affable. He's the kind of prof that you'd want to take out for coffee ;)
This was a great course! Readings were a bit long, but overall the content was really interesting. It was probably one of my easier courses- the subject matter is pretty simple. Gaston is a good teacher, keeps you interested, and he's nice to look at!
I love the way he thinks, socio-cultural anthropologists are so bloody bright, tolerant and see the truth of humanity, he totally made me want to become an anthropologist in his field. Plus he's so freaking nice and sexy, and that coupled with his p.o.v resulted in me having a huge crush on him.
He's my inspiration for wanting to major in anthropology. He made us to see the world in a different view. When I asked him if I could write the exam on an alternate date, he simply arranged another date for all of us. I wish I could take another class with him.
BORING SO BORING! You NEVER have to go to class ever (unless you want to take a nap). Pretty good looking prof tho
Loved this prof!! Because of him I am seriously considering Anthropology for a major or minor. Extremely interesting/relevant issues and teaches well. Obviously very knowledgeable. Take his class!!
So smart, so hot, great hair, great accent, just great.
Loved this course. Prof was helpful in creating a theoretical course which challenged us students to learn somewhat difficult and dynamic concepts. The way he taught allowed these concepts to more easily be accessed. Liked the readings and how it wasn't a textbook.
Awesome prof, really knowledgeable and damn fine too look at too
Really easy-going, knew what he was talking about, really interesting class, an all around great prof.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!! Dr. Gordillo is extremely passionate about his work and what he is teaching. I learned the most in this class than any class I took last year. Definitely my favorite class and professor so far at UBC. He typically uses the same course format: take home midterm, review paper, final exam.
Did not talk about anything the entire class most days. Stopped going to lectures half way through term and only went to discussions got a good grade anyway.
great prof, organized and very clear. There really aren't that many readings, and you dont actually have to read them all before class because he basically summarizes all of the articles before hand. He's totally hot too, which makes the time go by faster!
One of the best courses I took this year. Reading material is really challenging (amount + difficulty) but it's so interesting. He is a fair marker and he enjoys ideas from various points of view. If you've ever wondered about what's difference b/w space and place, or what "affect" means go take his class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
The course seemed to be interesting, the classes were not. Not systematic, draws connections amongst non-related topics. Altough very ihteresting anecdotes, he doesnt give enough information to actually learn something about the topics. Very good readings and movies. In overall, he´s bad.
Professor Gordillo was a nice guy, but his lectures/course could have been better structured. The readings were heavy, but were also informative too. The class discussions were interesting, but sometimes time-consuming. Most people had a hard time figuring out what he wanted the class to know or write in the papers.
Great class. He didn't ask us to buy a textbook and was engaging and upbeat. I didn't keep up with readings until exam time and scored above average. When I concentrated in lectures (not always - because of me not him) I found them to contain useful and thought provoking info. His TA marks hard, but he is fair. He is also sexy.
Gaston is clearly passionate but remember this class focuses on Latin America, personally I found it very boring but the assignments are marked very fairly.
Professor Gordillo is amazing. His class was one of my best this year. It was interesting and thought provoking. There was no textbook, but there were a lot of lengthy articles to read.
Fantastic prof and class! Lots of great discussions. I learned so much! There's definitely a focus on Latin America as he is from Argentina. He's super quick to reply to questions over e-mail and was always helpful. Grade was made up of a review paper, a take-home exam/essay, 1 final (which was 4 short essays), and participation/attendance.
Gaston is an amazing prof. His lectures are interesting and inspiring. Plus there are no textbooks! After his course I ended learning a lot of things that changed how I saw the world. He is approachable and it is obvious how he enjoys teaching the course. This is definitely my favourite course in UBC.
I was completely lost for the entire class so when it came time to write the paper I had a massive panic attack and wrote what I thought was way off topic and terrible., but he was very understanding when I told him what happened and I got a really good grade.
This man is so kind. He grades fair and is understanding of student struggles. Things to keep in mind: If you prefer to have semester-dispersed grading criteria, and hate participation grades, you probably won't like his style. Personally, I'd rather have one giant final paper worth most of my grade so I only have to write one paper, but that's me
Really kind and obviously passionate about this topic. However, this class was poorly organized. Not enough information was given about the topics for anything real to be learned and the class was almost entirely disjointed discussions. Would not take a class with him again.
Obviously extremely knowledgeable about the topic but the lectures often dragged. Also didn't give enough context for some of the readings, which made them hard to follow without prior knowledge. Entire grade comes from two exams, one essay, and a participation mark which was never clearly defined.
Awful class. There was an insane amount of reading and grades were based on how well we read. More of a history class than an anthropology class. The classroom was irresponsibly managed. The TA had free reign and was so unprepared. The grading was ridiculous & unfair. The lectures could be found on a wiki page. Gaston is really nice but disengaged
Fantastic Professor, extremely interesting, and visibly passionate about the course. He is very respectful of all students and shows genuine interest in the ideas shared in group discussions. I have learned a lot from him and attending his classes was an absolute pleasure every week!
While Dr. Gordillo is a kind, knowledgeable, and respectful professor, the format of this class severely drags it down. There is usually 70-80 pages of reading per week, all of which is testable. Not just "this info could help on the test", more so "if you have missed readings this question will be nearly impossible to answer".
I loved this course & learned so much from Gaston - highly recommend! There is a lot of reading and yes, "grades were based on how well we read" - but that's the point of university, right? You need to read and understand the topics. Content was fascinating & grades were fair. Final exam was tough though - too many questions in not enough time.
