Good teacher, TOUGH class.
a very good and caring teacher. he makes that tough class easier than it is.
Dr. Stewart is wonderful. Take her class - she helps so much!
Spam head above is a liar. All know how terrible class, textbook & teacher is.
Tough Class, but unfailable grading scale
WONDERFUL PROF AND TEACHER. Always helpful!
She's helpful, but you'll have better luck just reading the book and doing the homework - that's where test questions come from.
Easy class because i had a wonderful lab instructor (Tracy Hoke)
Really awesome teacher, does a great job with students, but the material just isn't that interesting after learning it for 7 years before college. Like someone said earlier, she will go the extra mile for you, -especially- if you give good effort.
i hated this class with a passion. way too much work, way too little explanation. she sucks!
She assigns quite a bit of work, but there are so many extra credit points that this class is simple.
Yeah she is nice, but she is so scatterbrained and doesn't teach what is on the test hardly at all. She is a bad teacher. Period. Nice person. Bad Teacher. Got it? Easy though with extra credit.
She is a very nice person but her lecture is horrible, and she rarely does problems in class that are on the homework and tests. She spends most of the class time mumbling about who-knows-what instead of working problems. But the class is easy.
Incredibly wierd. Really needs to explain things better in class. Also needs to start using a real book instead of a photocopied portion of a book with no index.
easy class but a horrible teacher
Don't listen to those idiots. If you manage to go to class and stay awake you'll learn quite a bit. Great for an intro class.
Horrible teacher. I went to class, did the homework, but learned little to nothing from her. However, it's an easy class because there are tons of extra points.
UPI text is not the greatest, but the assignemts and tests are totally helpfull....there is a LOT of homework and stuff, but as long as you put forth an honest effort and pay attention in class, its an easy A....THIS CLASS IS NOT FOR THE SLACKER!!
She is a nice person, but her class has no structure. The book she uses isnt even completed. It has no index and no tables with formulas. I am just thankful that I had a good Physics teacher in high school, because otherwise I would be completely lost.

She's fairly inadequate as a teacher but don't tell her that. She'll quote all sorts of credentials such as her status at the College Board, etc. Such credentials only destroy faith in the College Board in this poor college student's ever humble opinion

So I noticed someone comment not to listen to "those idots" who were saying bad things about this professor... it has been brought to our attention that the comment was actually made by the professor... pretty lame if you ask me.
As long as you complete your daily homework and know a little about the section for a daily quiz, then you can make it through just fine. The test problems usually come directly from homework, so you just study hard on those & you'll make an A or B.
Do your homework, and her grading system guarantees a good grade. On 4 tests, I made 83, 0(missed the test), 42, and 71. Completely skipped the final, and got a B for the class. Homework is a must, though, to get extra points.
Dr. Stewart is a pretty good teacher, but the book is not completed, contains typos, does not have a glossary or index, and can be very confusing. The grading scale is excellent and makes it very easy to get an A if you dour homework and go to class.
we need another physics teacher. she knows her stuff but cant teach
She knows how to talk to students, but isn't exactly clear on what she wants all the time. The grading scheme can be complicated, but presently an 85 is an A. As long as one attends class and does the homework, the class can be fun.
Very interesting grading system. Still can't understand it totally. She knows her stuff but can't express it too well. Also a more professional textbook could be used.
All I can hope is that I learn something from her husband in UP2. She HAS to make homework and quizzes due every class to get people to COME. Text book is awful, but on the bright side the grading system, though unclear, allows for high grades.
Class is hard and fast-paced and she never explains anything clearly. You won't understand anything until the day before the test. You'll think you're flunking but be surprised that you have an A in the class because of her nice extra credit system. Class sucks but you'll get a good grade.
is a totally lousy teacher, the book is totally unhelpful, though her grading system is truly beneficial.make sure you join a study group with brilliant students in it,so as to actuallu understand the material.doing homework is a good idea
Dr. Stewart's class gets old because of the daily homework, but if you do the homework, go to the labs, and go to the lectures, you have enough drop points so that you don't have to take the final! Though I didn't enjoy it, I believe that I learned more in this class than in most I've taken at UA.
bring a pillow to this class.. you wont learn anything from lecture but go for drop points. BAD TEACHER.
ARRRRRGGGHHH!!! I liked physics BEFORE that class, now I never want to hear the word Physics again
she knows her stuff but has a hard time teaching the actual materials. The book sucks period. this book is incomplete and can be very confusing. And watch out on the days she wears a tube top... it tends to fall conpletely down and trust me that you don't want to see that!
I think her whole point is to make you teach it to yourself. Not such a great idea for a University physics class. Pay attention on the days before the test. You don't have much choice in whether or not to take her.
She teaches it well enough although the book is horrible. Go to class and do the HW and you'll be fine.
pretty easy teacher. i sat in the front and made fun of her with some other kids, so she liked us. challenging class. if you can pay attention, she's not bad. good office hours. offers help. i enjoyed her class just fine.
It's not that hard to get an A, there is a lot of work, but it you do it, a good grade is not hard.
Her lectures are boring. She chooses great TA's mostly-- the only reason I have an A right now is because of my TA. Go to office hours. Your homework is on your test. Do your homework.
Very mediocre. It would help if she would teach us how to work the problems before we work the problems ourselves. However, if you do the homework, show up and take the quizzes, and study for the tests, you should be able to do okay. Besides, I don't think you'll have much of a choice.
she doesnt really teach you anything. you learn more from lab and your lab TA. pay attention in lab, do the home work, bs the quizes and you should have a B since the grading scale is in 15 % intervals. 85+ =A 70-85 B etc. you have to try and fail. in my opion you have to try and make a c.
Pretty good teacher, too much homework but if you study you will do great.
Horrible!! Avoid her at all costs!! Cannot teach. If it wasn't for my lab instructer I would have failed! Plus she accused me of cheating (something I can get kicked out of school for) because the girl that was cheating off of me was sucking up to her! I really hate her as a person and a teacher!
She a nice person and a good enough teacher. You don't get much personal attention, though, because the intro physics lecture classes are HUGE. That's why you mostly have to depend on your lab instructor, and mine happened to a be total jerk. She and her husband both overload you with homework and quizzes.
Lots of homework, but it helps your grade tremendously. Great teacher- you don't have to be a math/physics whiz to understand her class.
very bad teacher....only way i learned anything was from my lab teacher....class sucked, and she assigned homework over a subject she hadn't even covered in class..
Dr. Stewart gets a lot of bad press from students because physics is hard! I promise that her class is relatively easy for the subject matter. She was always very approachable when I had a question or a problem.
Boring lectures; you don't get much out of them but you still have to go to take the in class quizzes and turn in homework. If you are going to take this class be prepared to spend at least an hour a day for homework. Tests are pretty much like practice tests.
Not that hard as long as you do your homework. Test are very predictable; many problems come straight from homework and practice tests--and she'll often hint at the specific problems. Be sure to check the grading on your tests; they make a lot of mistakes.
Lecture is almost pointless, but the homework is due every lecture (you turn it in before class actually starts, so you could leave), but there's a quiz daily in lecture. I had to rely on my Lab TAs to learn all of the material, especially since the textbook wasn't very helpful at all. She is nice and will help you if you ask, though.

She is an awful teacher but if you're taking UPI, you don't have much choice so here's how to do well: Buy a couple of REAL textbooks online (used = inexpensive) to help you because the class textbook is useless. Working homework: google the type of problem and find a worked out example. I can't emphasize enough how much those 2 things saved me.
The lectures do no good and all the book does is confuse you. Get help from your lab TA's on all the problems you don't understand. If possible print off the homework solutions from the semester before off of the website. Other than that...good luck!
WOW, where do I start. This has to be the worst profeesor that i have ever had. She is terrible at explaining everything. Over 50% of the class e-mailed her after the first class because they had no idea what she meant. The only reason that I did not was because i messed around the website for nearly an hour looking for the online homework problems
This instuctor does not teach, she just shows powerpoint slides of pictures that are in the book. She is nearly impossible to hear. She assumes that everyone thinks like she does and can comprehend her vague graphs and homework problems. If you want to learn physics take this course somewhere else and transfer it in.
She is not any good, but she is the only UPI teacher so you will just have to put up with her.
Horrible lectures, bring something to do to stay awake. Hard and time consuming homework. If you need help go to her she is a genuine teacher who really cares for her students and cares more about you learning the matterial than giving you a bad grade and is very willing to work with you. Great person, wish there were more teacher like her.
Lectures were really boring, but you had to go to do the lecture quiz. So many different assignments to do for that class, it was just hard to remember what to do. The teacher was very nice though, she really wanted everyone to learn. Not to mention, the grading scale was way more than fair! (85-100 A)(70-85B) etc...
Horrible teacher. shes the worst teacher ive ever had, lectures are pointless she doesnt teach anything i had to teach myself everything. Her lab TA's are the only people who teach anything. I cant believe the university actually pays her money for what she does.
She's not the greatest teacher when shes teaching a class of 200+ (shes ok) but she is very helpful 1 on 1 and really works well with students to help them. Grading scale is very fair. Very nice teacher once you get to know her.
Horrible class, horrible teacher. The only thing you learn is what you care to from the awesome lab TAs. The "book" is extremely vague and hard to search through as there is no index, though it is almost a mandatory read due to the homework being based on material not yet covered in lecture!
She gives about the most boring lectures Ive ever attended. (1/2 the class is asleep) HW is stupid because it is over material not covered. The book is worthless. I heard she is a good and nice teacher who cares if you get to know her.
She gives horrible lectures, speaks in a very monotone voice and is difficult to follow her. Never uses the book, TAs are JUST ok, grading scale is fair, but she has TAs grade everything and they have screwed me out of numerous points this semester (take it and you'll understand.) Also, her homework is based on material not yet covered.
She has a quiz and homework over the material before she teaches it to you, and has no personality in front of a class. Half of the class is asleep and the other half is doing a crossword puzzle. I like physics, and I hated this class. Don't take this class unless you have to.
The trick to make an A is simply to read the book, attend lecture (she keeps you in class with quiz/homework grades), and make good use of lab time and your TA. Know basic trig/geo. High test grades = final exemption. Lecture = boring, right from book. She'll keep you until after class, so get ready to miss the bus if you take it.
Clearly explains, however: she wrote the book, so she's not wrong.
She's smart, but horrible at teaching the material. She is monotone, does not give you enough time to write out notes, and relies on you to look at powerpoint slides which really no one does, she is mean when it comes to e-mails, one on one in person she is okay. Her homework is unfair, and if you expect to learn anything it will be from the TA's.
She's a really nice lady, but sometimes the way she explained things was really complicated. The lab helps A LOT. Her tests were fairly straightforward and similar to the homework, however they were still somewhat difficult. Take UPI honors if you can - nothing different, only a project due at the end. The project can be time consuming though.
Slightly bad at explanations. Students are likely to miss a lot of what she says. Some teachers keep repeating important stuff and making sure everyone is aware of what is going on. Not her. If you are not paying rapt attention, you will miss a lot..
The majority of my homework time is spent on physics, but Dr. Stewart is a great teacher for Physics! She is monotone and has a dry sense of humor, but I definitely suggest her.
She's not bad teacher, but the amount of work she gives can be overwhelming. Go to class and be sure to over homework; because, the test usally comes directly from homework.
Talks over your heads, is standoffish to questions just because YOU don't have a PhD, homework is busywork and takes an eternity. You don't do any physics, you do Gay's favorite homework problems asked 1000 times. I had to fight her to get an A. If you don't go to lab, you won't learn the material from your TAs, which is the only way you can.
HER LECTURES ARE ABSOLTUELY TERRIBLE!! There are no other UPI teachers though so you have to take her. Her lectures are monotone the whole time, and very very very uninteresting. Attendance to lecture is mandatory as there are lecture quizzes handed out every day. Do your homework (which isn't hard) and you will make an A.
She has the worst lectures I have had here in Fayetteville. She is completely monotone and you have to stay because there is a quiz everyday. There is also a HW (sometimes 2) due everyday. All of the HW is over material not covered because she wants you to "learn out of the book too". Overall she is horrible.
Although her lectures are very monotone, she is easy to understand and comprehend. She gives lots of examples and is very open to questions (exact opposite of her husband, John Stewart). I had her in my lab, which helped tremendously. I recommend introducing yourself to her, it will make a big difference!
Class is twice a week. You dont learn much in class. Labs are time consuming, but help you a lot. Tests are hard, you have to study for them. TAs are very helpful.
The systems she teaches is awful. Long hw is hard. TA and labs are only things you learn from. Lectures are pointless. She mumbles something, shows pp slides and show really examples. Hw are extremely hard and worth nothing, but you have to do it. Tests are problems from hw and some examples from class. Good luck .
Lectures are quite long and boring but are very important because she gives quizzes in every lab. I wouldn't reccomment falling behind because she moves pretty quick through the book.
Her entire research centers around physics education, so you will learn if you choose. Very demanding on your time. You must attend class, do the homeworks, and read the book. Passive study will not do. Know your algebra and trig. The easiest hard class I've ever had. Office hours are available from her and TAs all week. Dry and snarky humor.
Is very knowledgeable in the field of physics, but is sometimes not effective in explaining things. She talks about major concepts as if you already completely understand them, and skips right to the equations you have to learn.
MOST BORING CLASS LECTURES but you have to attend because she has mandatory quizzes as well as weekly long homework assignments. Really is a nice lady and means well but she can be confusing and get off topic easily. CONSTANT studying due to the enormous amount of material you must learn especially if you are new to physics as in my case.
Excellent teacher. Physiscs is a difficult subject and requires the student to actually put forth effort. Her class is much the same. She is highly knowledgeable and helpful, but you must invest time in actually learning.
You have to do the hw and go to class but I loved her. She has a dry sense of humor so you need to pay attention to get her jokes, but overall, she is one of my favorite professors I have evear had. I got a 92% on the final just by studying the review sheets. You just have to put in the work to get a good grade.
Dr. Stewart is one of the worst professors on this campus. She doesn't teach. She just reads straight off of the powerpoints and going to class is useless. She has daily quizzes, though, so you are required to attend. Take physics in the summer if you can!
No. Just no. This class is formatted to take up all of your time. The guidelines are ridiculously strict. She doesn't teach what you need to know to do the homework. She does not curve her overly hard tests. She has no sympathy for the students at all. The class is a lot harder than it should be. Just dont....don't.
Dr Stewart does read from the slides but she has points to make besides them. You learn a lot in lab in this class. She isnt a bad teacher; she's really nice and she DOES care about her students. Tests aren't hard if you attempt to understand the material and learn from your mistakes! She allowed us to correct errors on a hard test for half credit.
Her tests are hard and her lectures are super boring. But if you pay a little attention and go to labs you will do fine despite the boring lectures.
I finished the course with >95%. That said, she has no idea what she's doing. Grade policy is convoluted, the book sucks, the syllabus is confusing, she doesn't cover her material in lecture, forces lab TA's to teach you. Monotone, poor explanations, tests are nearly identical to homework, but test questions can be vague or stupid. Not pleasant.
I really did not enjoy her teaching, at all. She seems like a sweet person and I understand that it is hard to lecture so many students but lectures are SUPER boring and SO hard to pay attention during. Hmwrks are at times assigned over material we haven't covered, and tests are fairly easy but at times confusing. Not my favorite class or teacher.
I took the honors class. They say the only difference between honors and regular is one tiny project. WRONG. This tiny project happens to be a 10 page paper. Plus a powerpoint. Also. I went to office hours with the TAs and her. She is bad at explaining. The TAs can explain it better than her. Tests are hard.
The lectures are extremely boring. Lab and TA office hours are where I learned all of UPI. Dr. Stewart tries to make the lectures interesting, but she's very dry and monotone.
