she was wicked...very easy, liberated and funny! all girls have gotta take her!
life altering and captivating as a public speaker
becareful, she looks for ducks and swans!
She's fun. A lot of interesting topics discussed!
interesting dicussions in class
if you want a good mark and don't mind abhorant amounts of feminism she's it

definately left a indelable mark on my life and will continue to be the topic of many future conversations !!! Just remember purple !!!
Course was more like 1203. Purple paper and Blue clothes. She notices any change in a student's hair. If you speak mandarin, expect to teach her some too. Overall, good teacher, but pay attention to even the finest detail in texts!!! She's understanding!
A very nice teacher!! If you want to learn, and you want to learn something fun and meaningful, you gotta take her!!
**** is a fabulous english teacher. She accepts all ideas, doesn't put down students, and isn't a HARD marker(but not EASY). She asks that people make an effort, and contribute to discussions. Whats the point of higher education if not to learn?
I thought ****e was the best english teacher i have ever had at kwantlen. She is very smart and interesting. For me a student who hates english i cant believe how great her class was

very good teacher but guys beware..... this may be the most feminist person in the world.... the whole semester is based on how women are treated horribly......
She's a good teacher. You'll get a good mark if you are open to her topics. She's not like other eng teachers where they mark purely on their own style, whereas, her marks are based on your ideas.
Shes great...a really big feminist and admits it..be prepared to read about four novels..and three essays...good marker
she is great...really nice teacher...really open and talktive...she doesn't care much about grammar and stuff...she marks base on ur ideas and points...good teacher...^^ ...and ya...lots of femineist talk in her class...lots of discussion...but fun~ ^^
Doc is so cool. I don't find English boring @ all. She explains the stories very well and thoroughly. Fair marker too.

No one will drop her class !!! She's such a kool & nice prof. Easy marker. NO novels ... just really short prose!! all easy inclass essays!! Highly Recommended!!!!
*WARNING* If you do not intend to adopt a feminist view, avoid this teacher! Unfortunatly, it is impossible for someone so opinionated to be objective. Don't believe her when she says that she gives high marks to those who can argue her points adequately.
Doc is one the best english teachers!!!! Just make sure you voice your opinion and state them with proper facts or re-state her points during exams and you'll get an A.
FEMINIST. Guys, you know what that means... The person who wrote the next comment obviously agreed with her. She is a super nice lady, but it doesn't translate in fair marks if you don't agree with her. Most students in the class are feminists too.
she is hard! don't take her.
Wow,I really wish I had the same experience as other students. I didn't agree with some of her views even though I consider myself a feminist too. I didn't like how she openly announced the highest marks in class in addition to her other teaching methods.
Feminist, always late if she bothers coming to class. Has a very "I'm always right - you're wrong" way. You will do well if you just repeat back what she says but don't give your own ideas.
Doc is an awesome teacher with strong views of the world and life. I highly recommend her to anyone who enjoys issues involving humanity, racism, feminism, and animal cruelty. Doc's English class is not only fun but strenuous-free.
Scatter-brained & never on time. Was told she was easy but she's so not. Plays favourites so if she likes you, you'll do well or else you have no chance...even if you're really good.
I heard she was really good and nice but she was always late and missed SO many classes. She cuts people off mid-sentence if she doesn't agree with them and loves to hear herself talk.
I wish I had the same experience as those who rated her as a good prof. Always late and played favourites big-time. Kind of nasty as she likes to cut you off if she doesn't like where you're going with your thought.
Did not like her AT ALL. Don't bother trying to defend men (even if you're female) as she just wants to hear nasty things about them. Pretend to hate them and don't have an opinion that differs from her & you'll do well.
How did people find her to be a great teacher? Badly organized classes, always late in coming to class and handing back assignments, gushed over her favourites and spits at students who could form ideas that weren't hers. Terrible.
Trust me when I say that the ones who gave her smiley faces are probably her favourite 'star-students'. She plays favourites big-time and is nasty to those who don't make the list. Badly organized, off-topic class.
She likes those who participates and speaks their mind. I thought she was fair in her marking even though she does have favorites. She marks the paper more on ideas over grammer. Overall, she is an awesome teacher despite some of the bad evaluations.
She is great! Has a lot of strong opinions but many awesome experiences to back them up. She knows what she is talking about and doesn't mind being challanged as long as your not a dumb-ass about it. Her classes go by fast, home work is short readings.
She's a good teacher, very easy to get good marks. Pay attention in class and participate. Exams may be a bit tricky.
She teach me so good. Now i best at english ever. People comes to me for help cause mes so good at englishers. Thanks Hickman you makes me so much smarters yay its greatest evers your the nicests ahahahahaaha

She is an awesome teacher... yeah she is a feminist but she recently broke her leg or sumthing and now we have a new teacher who is so brutal. when we had her as our prof class was always full and now, with the new teacher, our class is down to like 15 students because nobody wants to show up.
i wanted to take her class for 2nd time b/c I found her classes stimulating and she's an easy marker too! now we have this really crappy prof. Doc is very knowledgable and as long as you present your case and back it up with evidence, u are bound to do well!

Best teacher in my life. She not only teaches us about English, but also much more about life that you'll always remember! She is not very organized, but she has her own ways of doing things and she defends them well! Highly recommond her for anyone!!! READ what she told u to and prepair sth to say
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!
The people who like her are obviously her favourites in the class. She loves to hear herself speak and you can only get a good grade if a) you're one of her class pets or b) you have the same opinion as hers - don't think for yourself!
I heard she was good but she plays favourites in the class and only wants you to repeat her opinions. She's disorganized and always late. Didn't like her at all.
Took her class about two years ago now. I will never forget her. Most people who are negative of her are probably ignorant. We're talking about a woman who carried around a loaded .38 in South Africa fighting against Apartheid. Tough, and no, she doesn't have a lot of patience for simpletons. First feminist I deeply respect. Will continue..........
Had such interesting stories to tell and by far the best teacher I encountered at Kwantlen
horrible 'bleeding heart' teacher
I have no idea what the person below me is talking about. She is an amazing prof! Very clear and involves everyone in interesting and engaging topics. She definitely does not shy away from things that are not normally considered "appropriate" to talk about. Which makes the class that more interesting. HIGHLY recommended!
What an inspiring and passionate teacher. This woman is someone who has left a lasting impression in my mind. I think I'll have to go visit South Africa. Put it this way, I got an A- in her course and a D in Ruperts. Interesting course and great content.
I would agree that she is an amazing woman... but she's not teaching us English. All my friends in other English classes are learning how to write essays, and I feel like I'm in a feminist studies course... the majority of my classmates feel the same way, so we strongly suggest taking this class with a different professor if at all possible.
Agree with comment below. Great for a feminist studies course, but teaches absolutely none of the basic English/essay writing skills that should be taught in this class, as an intro to English class. Highly unrecommended if you're looking to prepare yourself to write essays.
She is rather bias after reading the essay about how terrible guns are, and she started explaining how her gun saved her life. Another kid joined the conversation about how useful guns were and the entire class was brain washed. She asked who would still refuse to have a gun. I was the only one who wouldn't. I voiced my opinion and they all got mad
I am not a very stong english student and I was expecting to be taught how to write essays properly, but that was never the case! She talked about life experiences and random topics every class, I didnt learn ANYTHING. I was entertained but this class was useless.. im going to have to take it again. Waste of time and money taking it with her.
This teacher is the best teacher I have had in my entire life. She is the most inspirational woman I've met, and I look forward to going to class every time. Her fascinating life experiences and the way they connect with what we are learning makes the course all the better. A+ rating a million times over.
Shes a great teacher but only if you dont need to take any other english courses. Doesnt teach much in class but is a very easy marker.
Superb Professor. Interesting and interested!
Very professional, informed and widely read. Would recommend her every time. Makes time to explain everything and is very patient and clear. Very stimulating class!
Very well prepared and very well informed. Always available to students. Well read and interesting. Interested in English for the first time.
Awesome professor. Learnt so much.Really dedicated teacher and so well informed on subject. Take this class!
Great Professor. Really knows her stuff. Learnt so much. What a role model!!!
GREATEST!
Very Engaging prof! Class was never dull
Be prepared to have your preconceptions challenged, as this prof presents some pretty controversial info, but all in all, very interesting. I learned to ratchet my prose up a notch through her tough marking on mediocre work/effort.
Stimulating and always interested in students and their opinions. Very intellectual and informed about everything.
Amazing Prof. Changed my life! Always interested in everyone and does not play favourites. Very alert to students and their issues. SO smart.
I took English with Gaye just this past semester in the spring. Out of all the classes I have had and all of the profs, she was my favorite. She is such an inspirational woman and I was excited to attend class each week! Her classes are so interesting and everyone came out happy with their grades! HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING FOR ENG 1100.
She opens your mind to the world, tells many interesting stories from her experience. You will have plenty of chances to state your opinions and debate in class. There's never a right or wrong answer, as long as you can provide a logical argument with examples to back it up, then she'll give you a good mark. I'm so glad that I took her class.
she is a very good teacher for English 1100 she has made me a better writer and you dont do much work in class. her class consists of small mulpiple choice worth 10 percent a midterm essay in class worth 20 percent and a research mla style worth 25 percent. she edits people essays in advance and gives good feedback plus there is NO FINAL
Great prof, interesting lectures and fairly easy marker. Wears the same thing everyday.
Makes you think constantly. Changed my view of English and my life goals.
My favourite! I looked forward to it each week.
Inspiring and life-changing.
Looked forward to class each week.
Lectures were very engaging, but her class criteria is very confusing. For the final group project there were no guidelines and she made no effort to explain it. Her short quizzes were weighed heavily as part of our grade. Class average was terrible. Don't take her if you expect a high grade. She does not respond to emails very often.
Overall, she is a very inspirational prof who comes with lots of experience and knowledge. However, lectures are very long and dry, and her marking of the in-class essays is difficult.. we were asked for new ideas, I gave it and did the worst I ever did in writing.
Oh my god. Talk about having an agenda. This liberal professor will twist your words until they suit her. Not to mention, she marks incredibly hard, and disrupts presentations.
Although most classes are discussion as long as you pay attention to what aspects she pulls out of the work ei: what's missing, and you write with her views, you'll be okay. She's not organized well and can be really confusing for tests and essays.. Which she marks hard... Just reading for homework
Changed my view of English.
ENG1100 was extremely straight forward and easy. ENG1202 (still in the process) is.. difficult. You have to read four books, do three quizzes, three essays, one final exam essay, and a group project. If you're not on top of your game with the reading and FULLY understanding the books, you'll flunk this course. Oh and 99.9% of the time, she is late.
Gaye is such a wonderful person. I loved going to her classes and waking up early for her interesting class discussions and debates. Lots of interesting world topics are discussed and it makes you always think of two sides of everything. Not only a wonderful teacher, but an inspiration.
There is one group project at the end in which there is no clear grading criteria making it difficult. We mostly read articles and analyzed them. We had 1 lecture on how to write an essay and were asked to write a total of 3 (1 research & 2 for exams). Feedback was given on those but it was hard to understand bc of her writing. Not my ideal prof.
Every class was the same, she talked about the book and then we were done. And none of it had to do with the essay questions she gave us for said book. Overall, I did not enjoy her class.
She is very interesting and bases our readings on inequalities in our society. I would certainly take a class with her again! Participation is defiantly your key to a good grade. The only reason I didn't give her a 5/5 is that there is no grading rubric for assignments and sometimes I feel she just pulls random grades out of thin air.
I barely made it through the first class and had to drop it. This was an 1100 level course and "Doc" was talking about "rape" and other sensitive subjects that made everyone uncomfortable. She didn't even have tact enough to say sexual assault. She asks for your opinion but will argue until you agree with hers. Too many negatives to list.
Inspirational and caring. Really listens and accessible to students. Very well read and knowledgable.
The class consists of readings, and lots of in-class discussions with mandatory participation. She literally doesn't teach anything the whole semester, and doesn't provide any criteria sheets for her assignments/midterms. Getting a good mark is not impossible but I wouldn't recommend her if you're actually looking to improve your writing skills.
You do not learn anything to do with grammar, university apa/mla style or essay structure. If you need to learn those things, do not take this class. Was light on homework. Group projects were painful & if you don't write exactly what she is looking for you will not do well. Her writing is also not legible, Doc should teach woman studies courses!
She is very kind, and very passionate about the things discussed in class, but they can often be sensitive topics to some. She challenges you're thinking a lot in terms of the language we use, how we behave, etc. However, her grading criteria is not ever clear, writing and feedback is really hard to understand, and she is very opinionated.
She is very stubborn about her opinions. And if you don't support her opinion or have a different one then she will say you're wrong. You can explain your opinion but she will argue and won't ever try to understand your perspective. She doesn't seem to like people who are of white race or men. She is a hardcore liberal.
If you want to sit in a room for 3 hours take this class. The lectures are about her thoughts and never the students. She talks a lot about her experiences and never opens up the floor to students. The class is boring. I don't think my writing at all. No grammar, no MLA style. This course with her, you'll have to be independent since she wont help.
If you don't want to learn anything about writing and you want to talk about sex and women's "issues" then take this course.
Tough prof that requires a group presentation as a final project Won't recommend if you want higher marks
