Great professor! It's super easy, 3 tests that are online and then 11 discussions throughout the semester. She is funny to listen to and supppperr smart. Made going to class easy (though she doesn't make you come). Would take her for any subject. AMAZING!
Such a great teacher. She is so knowledgeable about the things she teaches. Really one of the best teachers I've ever had.
awesome teacher one of the best teachers i had in a long time come to class you cant leave the class with less than a B
Best professor I've ever had. She makes class fun and is just a really cool person. Always willing to help out her students and ensures you a good grade as long as you do your part. I would take her class again in a heartbeat. PICK HER!!!
Best teacher Ive ever had! Take the class with a friend, and you'll be sure to pass. She makes the class so interesting and fun. Absolutely adore her. I highly recommend taking her class!!
Dr Horton is a very professional professor. I am currently serving in the Florida Army National Guard and I am required to attend monthly and sometimes bi-monthly training down in Miami Fl and Dr Horton works around this with me allowing me extra time to finish the required assignments. She is energetic and a lot of fun as a professor.
She is a phenomenal teacher. She is very energetic, and explains everything crystal clear. My favorite class this semester, favorite teacher in college so far. She gives great examples that are funny and stick out so you can remember them.
Hilarious! You learn a lot and EVERYTHING you talk about is interesting! Definitely take her. However, the phrasing on the tests is a little hard to understand.
She is a very intelligent woman. She tries to not be bias but I know shes a liberal. I liked how class was though. We were able to express our opinions. I would take her.
She is SUPER AWESOME! I would absolutely take her class and any others that she teaches, in fact you would be lucky too. Stay on top of the readings (all given to you)and review properly for the exam and you are golden.
No help at all! I took the 6wk version online, I emailed her, never received one email back! the only thing you were graded on were the tests, i dont even think she looked at the weekly discussion questions.
I absolutely loved Dr. Horton. She is clearly passionate about philosophy and ethics, as well as a very intelligent woman. She can explain things so that every person in the class understood her teachings. Print out the review questions and ask her for help on them if you're confused and you are guaranteed to pass her class.
Good teacher! 4 exams no cumulative final. However, do all the discussions on time. If you do all the discussions on time you will receive 10 points extra credit towards your final grade. which you will need since the exams aren't so easy. I recommend doing the readings, if not the exam will be tough. overall easy class to get A or B. No textbook!
Great Professor. 4 tests online, no final. No book either. She does make sure you have done the discussions online. If you do them all on time you get +10% to your test average/final grade.
She's extremely bias and repeatedly says that she is smart because she has a PhD in liberal arts. If you want an easy A you should take a class with her, I barely went to class and did the assignments and still got an A
MRS. HORTON IS AN SMART TEACHER THAT DOES EVERYTHING IN HER POWER TO GET HER STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND BECAUSE ITS VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND HER CLASS IS STRAIGHT FORWARD GO TO CLASS AND DO YOU DISCUSSION AND 4 TEST AND YOU WILL PAST WITOUT A DOUBT MRS.HORTON REALLY CARES ABOUT HER STUDENTS BEING SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE TAKE HER CLASS I LOVE HER CLASS!!
Great teahcer, knows her stuff, has a phd in liberal arts, the reading didn't make any sense but she goes over each reading section, I didn't read much of it cuz I didn't understand what was being talked about but still managed to get a B and close to an A
THIS INSTRUCTOR IS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! I wish I could have taken her for all my classes. She is very down to earth, helpful, and is very interested in you understanding the information. Santa Fe needs more instructors like her. Lots of information but if you do study you won't have a problem. Thank you Mrs. Horton for an awesome semester!
I only say skip and you won't pass because she explains and answers all of the study guide questions in class. If you go everyday it is an easy class. She is quirky and funny and makes the lectures fun and the reading easy to understand. Make sure you answer all study guide questions, and it is easy to get an A. Never read at home, only took notes
I took Dr. Horton for Biomed Ethics, she seemed really unorganized in the beginning. We had no tests, only discussions but it needed to be 500-1000 words and the term paper was 10 pages. She didn't respond to emails. She did give feedback on the first couple of discussions.
I took this class online. Each week there is about 20-30 pages of reading. I received a 75 on my first grade, i asked for tips to improve, she said to be more analytical, next grade 75, asked for tips, she said to improve conclusion, next grade 75, no matter how much i improved i received the same grade. she must be having a tough personal year
If you take her, be prepared to write a 2000 word paper weekly that is harshly graded with no detailed comments as to how you could improve. No syllabus will be posted so just wing it! she will not answer e-mails so don't bother, because they went into her spam folder (eye-roll)... Your term paper is worth 40% of your grade with no guidelines!
Expect to write a 2000 word paper weekly. Feedback, not going to happen.. Expect not to have a syllabus, who needs one right? (Eye Roll) Your weekly assignment will be harshly graded with no explanation as to why you received the grade that you got. Your term paper is worth 40% of your grade with no guidelines, who needs those either right? GL
She is soooo funny! She says things teachers or anyone for that matter would be afraid of saying. The worst part about her is that (at least for Ethics) the only grades are for tests. So 4 grades in the gradebook. They're not too bad if you read (easy BC+). She's great though, no complains. Online textbook that's used was free.
Exams were misleading. Study guide did not help at all. No textbook required but she has long readings and discussion boards that does not follow the exam
She is the least boring teacher I've ever had - high school included. She makes the material interesting and she's incredibly intelligent, as well as funny and energetic. Downside: LOTS of reading for this class and it will show on your exams if you haven't done it. Upside: you can use your notes on the exams and there's no book, just Canvas.
She makes the material interesting and she's really smart, as well as funny and energetic. She encourages you to thinkfor yourself instead of just shoving old info at you. Downside: LOTS of reading for this class and it will show on your exams if you haven't done it. Upside: you can use your notes on the exams and there's no book, just Canvas.
Tests are ROUGH! You have 4 exams and 10 discussion posts. If you do all the posts, then you get 10 extra points on your final exam grade. Other than that, your exams are your only grades. Although they're take home tests, they're still very difficult. She's great but the class isn't a breeze. Attendance isn't a grade but I recommend you go.
She is very smart and willing to help you understand the material. The tests aren't too bad if you go to every class and do the review sheet. She is funny and makes class fun. There was no book for the class, only readings online.
Professor Horton is a great teacher. Her lectures are interesting and she actually listens when you talk. She wants you to understand the material. There is a lot of reading. You will be okay if you just read the lecture notes. The exams are straight from the lecture notes. Exams are online and you get to use the notes.
This is my second class with Professor Horton. I took ethics last term and I am taking biomedical ethics this term. I like her style of teaching. Class is not boring. Her enthusiasm for the subject really makes it fun to go to class. The exams are totally straightforward and come right from the notes.
Dr. Horton has a way of getting you excited for class. the most shy person will be debating in no time.
Class is not boring. She gets everyone involved in class so that makes class go by quick. The tests are easy if you go to class and write down the notes on the board.
One of the best professors I have ever had. She makes class so much fun and really draws you into debates and conversations. I will take her classes again!
she is funny. pretty easy going and gives good grades.! i'm on A in this class.
She writes all the notes on the board at the beginning of the class and this is the stuff on the tests. Not a hard class if you show up and write down the notes.
This was the only class I had this term that didn't make me want to fall asleep.
I came into this course not expecting it to be easy, but it was easier than anticipated. Gayle is an amazing professor and she makes the lectures extremely interesting and she has a good sense of humor. Attendance is not mandatory, but it is helpful. She puts all the information online, and you only have one assignment a week. She is great.
This is the best class I've had at SFC. Mrs. Horton is an amazing teacher. She made it fun to come to class.
Dr. Horton is one of the best teachers I have had at SFC. I really liked the class discussions. What I like best about this class is that I felt like I could say anything and my contribution would be acknowledged. Dr. Horton never made me feel dumb even though my English is not good. It is really cool to have a professor that respects you.
I signed up to take Horton's online bioethics class but I struggled. She suggested I come to the lecture. That made a world of difference to me. She explains everything we have to write about in the posts and hearing other students debate the issues is totally worth the drive into Gainesville. Mrs. Horton does everything she can to help students.
This was my first term at SFC after being discharged from the Marine Corps. I was not looking forward to two years at SFC before I could join the engineering program at UF. Dr. Horton was my first instructor. I didn't like her at first. Then I learned her father did 20 yrs active duty (Navy) and another 20 civil service. She taught me to listen.
I had the chance to take PHI 2600 with Prof. Gayle Horton at SFC college, and it was the most amazing class ever! She is very down to earth and funny! You only have 12 discussion post and 4 test. come the class and the discussion post, you should have no problem passing the class. if you don't take her, I'm just going to say you're crazy!!!
The minimum word count for her discussions is 500. You will not pass if your response is around 500 words. I wrote around 2000-3000 words for each discussion and still didn't get full credit. It is clear she does not follow a grading rubric and expects way too much. If you're taking her class online, don't.
This class was very tough. Every discussion was minimum 500 words, except for the first one that was 1000 words. She is a very tough grader. I wrote over 1000 words than what she asked for and she has only given me B's and C's. You have to explain yourself very thoroughly, if not you will not get a good grade. I do not recommend her online class
Dr. Horton made this class totally awesome. There were 12 posts and a paper. No exams. I thought many of the students in the class were whiny and immature. Dr. Horton was willing to read my drafts and give feedback. She responded to emails very quickly. If you are a serious student this is a great class.
This is the last class I need to transfer to UF. I put it off because I thought ethics would be boring. But it was totally awesome. This is the first class I've taken where students are encouraged to speak. She totally respects her students. I would totally recommend this class.
I took Prof Horton's class online. She's tough grader, but she really cares about her students. I made an A in the class but I really had to work hard. There is no Final- her class consists of essays. She always gave constructive criticism and let me know what I needed to work on in my papers. You have to work hard in her class.
Dr Horton is one of the most amazing professors I've ever had. I would recommend her to anyone. She's very knowledgeable and she is HILARIOUS. Tough grader, she just wants you to think critically & really dig into the discussions. She is a 10 out of 10 as far as skill.
Her exams make no sense. Sometimes they don't even align with the notes or readings. I work really hard on the discussions and she gives me C's. Way too much information to even remember and none is it is ever relevant to the exam sometimes. It's almost like what was the point of studying so much?
I love this class. Everyone is totally into the class so it goes by really fast. It is not boring. If you come to class and do the review questions for the exam you will get an A. Dr. Horton is awesome.
This is the best class I have taken in my two years at Santa Fe. She doesn't take attendance but I put coming to class was mandatory because the tests come straight from the notes on the board. I am Army Reserve and I can she Dr. Horton respects the military. I talks in class one time about my tour in Iraq and she actually said thanks for serving.
This was the absolute best class I have taken at Santa Fe. The discussions were so interesting. We talked about things like 3D printing of human organs and transplanting pig parts into humans and fecal transplants. I am inspired to major in biomedical engineering. This class has totally changed how I think about things.
She is a great professor, interesting lectures and lots opportunities for certain assignments.
This class is awesome. She gives really good feedback on the discussion posts. I can't see why anyone would whine about the tests--if you write down the notes she writes on the board at the beginning of class there's no way you can do bad. The questions come straight off the notes. She makes it really interesting to come to class.
Although Professor Horton is hilarious. Her lectures are usually all over the place. Messes up due dates of essay long discussion post each week, Hand writing is hard to read, harsh grader. I wouldn't take her again. the worst teacher I've had so far at Santa Fe.
I took this teacher for ethics online. "Discussion Question" due every week, more of like a discussion essay due every week.
I do not recommended taking Professor Horton! She has told multiple students she does not actually read the discussions she skims them and hands out grades. It is impossible to get an A on her discussions. She graded not just mine but many others 10pg term paper within an hour. BEWARE OF HER CLASS!!
Dr. Horton was absolutely horrible. Grades of the 12 papers we did were arbitrary and she rarely gave constructive feedback. I asked for help numerous times throughout the semester only for her to refuse to meet in person and then give minimal support via email. Half my papers were 95s, the others 75s with no clear reason why. She does not care.
Felt like she never actually read my papers and slacked on the timing that she graded them. Great lectures but grades on if you agree with her standpoint or not
Professor Horton is a complete slacker and doesn't care about her students at all. Her lectures were all over the place and discussion post each week were 5 paragraph essays. The term paper is 8-10 pages and she graded mine within 1 hour. I am an A student and received a C+. Never again by far the worst teacher I have had at Santa Fe to date.
Professor Horton does not care about her students. The lectures are good at first but then she gets off topic. She does not help with weekly discussion post and she does not spend time grading student's essays. She screwed me over at the end of the class for changing the weight of the grades. Do not take her!
Worst teacher I have ever had. 10 discussion essays that is 60% of your grade and a 10 page term paper that is the other 40%. Horrible and very subjective grading. Rubrics are very unclear on criteria and don't expect any decent feedback on an of your papers. I would not suggest this professor to anyone. She shows an extreme lack of care.
Prof. Horton is a great professor I took her online so I don't know her personally, but she has good intentions. If you want an A, you must write between 1,500-3,000 word papers, any less won't fly. Reviews are flawed, students are lazy; do your work and read, the class is very writing intensive. I made a 95, so you can too. Interesting material!
Don't take this class over the summer or online. My grades ranged from 70-90's. Very little feedback from professor.
Dr. Horton is a great professor, and is very knowledgeable in the subjects of philosophy and ethics. She helped me understand some of the more obscure content of the class in emails and after class, which was helpful. She would often go off in tangents with the class talking about anything from 3D printing organs to funny stories. Would recommend.
Dr. Horton is a really awesome professor. She is a very tough grader though. She is very knowledgeable on the course work. Ask for help and she will in both email or in person. If you want to learn a new style of writing take her class. She is not very clear on grading reasons. By the way I took her class in a 6 week course. that was a bit tough.
I can't believe anyone would criticize this professor. If you come to class she totally tells you how to structure your essays. She is really firm about having a thesis statement. Once I got that down, I did great. I would totally recommend her. She goes out of her way to help students. Her lectures make you want to be a part of the discussion.
This was my all time favorite class. I highly recommend Prof Horton. She makes class fun. Grades were based off 10 essays (500 words) (they were super easy as long as you go to class and listen to the things she says. she basically lays the format of the paper out for you) and a final term paper. This was such an interesting/fun class.
Professor Horton is very fun and makes lectures incredibly understandable. I have changed my beliefs on numerous topics because of this class. There are no quizzes or tests. Grades are based on 10 discussion posts (500 words)due 1 day a week, and a term paper due at the end of the semester.
Professor Horton was an amazing professor. She provides you with the topics and then you write a paper on what she has given and also some from the book. We had a paper due every week which was a lot to handle with my other classes, but the topics were very interesting. Also, term paper is 10 pages. If you dont know how to write papers I would not
I graduated from UF this past term. I am pre-med. Dr. Horton totally set me up for my interview. I hated writing all them papers. But doing the work put me in a position to do really well in my med school interview. I really recommend her if you want to go to med school. She will totally set you up. I hate writing all the papers. But now it is good
Professor Horton is so helpful. She totally gave us an outline for each essay. She told us how to write a thesis statement. If you come to class and follow the format, the class is easy. I say that participation matters because if you come to class and ask questions, she will totally help you. Class discussions were really interesting.
Dr. Horton is awesome. We have really interesting discussion in class. There is a lot of writing. But she is very clear about what she expects. I would definitely take her class again.
I took this class at 8 a.m. and I thought the class would be boring. I am a business major and needed a humanities credit and this was the only thing available. But the class totally rocks. If you like a really interactive classes where students actually talk, this class is totally for you.
This is the best class I have taken at SFC. Class goes by quickly because she is so interesting. She totally knows what she is talking about and explains everything really well. There is a lot of writing. But if you come to class and get the outline, it's really pretty straightforward. There are no quizzes or tests.
I really like coming to this class. The subjects are interesting, especially CRISPR. I am not a strong writer. She read over drafts of my essays and that made a big difference. Her feedback totally helped me. I totally recommend this class.
I took this class Summer B, so we had two essays due each week. Still, I thought this was an easy class. Just write down the notes on the board and write the essays with the outline she gives. That's all I did. She is really funny. She makes class go by quickly. I like that people actually talk in this class.
This is the best class I have taken at Sant Fe. I really like that everyone talks. I have never had a class where everyone feels comfortable talking. There is a lot of writing but no quizzes or exams. I like that she read through drafts of my essays. My English is not so good. She totally helped me.
I took this class Summer B with only six weeks to do the course. The class was intense. There was a lot of writing. But her lectures explain everything really well. She gives us outlines to help write the essays. If you show up and write down whats on the board, you will pass. I like that everyone was into the class. That made class more fun.
She doesn't take attendance but I said class was mandatory because if you come to class you will get everything. She writes the notes on the board and the essays come straight from her notes. If you write down the notes and follow the outline, the essays are easy--only 500 words. I missed class once because I was sick. I was lost. I love the class.
This class rocks. Yea, there's a lot of writing but it is easy. There's no tests. She encourages students to talk in class. That makes class more interesting. She really helped me with my essays.
This is an awesome class. The topics are interesting. There is a lot of writing but no tests. She totally knows her stuff. I like that she was willing to read over drafts of my essays and give me feedback.
I love this class. If you like to debate issues intelligently and respectfully, take this class. There is a lot of writing. But she is very clear on what she expects. You can email her a copy of your essay and she will look it over and give you feedback.
She's great! It is a very difficult class but if you send her your essays beforehand she will check over it. The only thing that sucks is she requires an 8 page paper for the final.
She's a good teacher and she knows the subject thoroughly, even better she's enthusiastic about teaching this class. Although, I recommend taking this course during a full-length semester, taking it during summer or a "B" semester makes it incredibly difficult to have enough time to write all of the papers.
I wish I had taken this class during the full term instead of the summer term. I would have liked more time to think through the issues. I highly recommend this class. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, and she is really easy to talk to.
I love Gayle. She is down-to-earth. If you show up and do your part, she will totally help you. Once you understand how to write a thesis statement, you are golden. I like that she sat down with me and went over my essays. Once she said, "This is your thesis", I totally got it. Yes, this class is demanding but fair. You get what you put into it.
Dr. Gayle rocks. This is the best class I have taken at Santa Fe. She explains the material really well and she is available after class for help. She answers emails quickly. I like that she is totally down to earth. I totally recommend this class. She is awesome.
Dude I totally love this class. The professor is totally cool. Like you can ask anything and she will consider your question. I don't see how anyone could unlike this class. She is totally straight up. Ask a question and she will either give you a straight up answer or tell you she doesn't know and has to do research.
If you are a serious student and you want to get into the college of nursing or medical school, you totally need to take this class. This was the first class at Santa Fe that I really felt like was worth the money. You can stay after class and she will talk with you like you are a regular person. I totally recommend her.
I loved this class. You can talk to her after class and she will email you back. I love this class because everyone talks. She invites discussion and then totally listens. Yes, some times conversations get out of hand. But that is totally cool. She is the best teacher I have had in my two year stay at Santa Fe.
My brother and I both took this class. We loved Dr. Gayle. She is helpful and she answers emails quickly. If you ask her for help she will totally deliver. We loved this class. I think this is the best class I have taken at Santa Fe.
I can't see how anyone would dislike this professor. She will meet you outside of class to help you with your essays. She will review a draft of your work and give you feedback. If you read the materials and go to class you can't help but pass. I really think this is the best class I have taken at Santa Fe.
I personally didn't like Dr. H because she would talk about politics and shame people who are "liberal" however, she's a good professor. She let's students email drafts & responses quickly. There wasn't really a syllabus & her grading scale wasn't clear but, not a hard course. I took in summer B & had two essays each week not including term paper.
This is the best class I have taken at Santa Fe. Dr. Horton has a great sense of humor and makes class interesting. I totally recommend this class.
Dr. Horton is the best. This is such an interesting class. She explains everything really well. She is very intelligent and passionate about bioethics. I totally recommend this class.
This is the best class I have taken at SFC. I like that Dr. Horton presented both sides. The hard part is that you have to figure out what you think. If you don't have a thesis statement, that will kill your grade. You can email her and she will help you. This is not like any other class I have taken. You actually have to think.
I totally loved this class. There is a lot of writing but no exams. She is very knowledgeable about biomedical ethics. I would definitely recommend her.
This is the most interesting class I have taken at SFC. The teacher encourages discussion. Sometimes discussions got off track--history, politics, religion. But it was always so interesting. If you are a serious student, you totally need to take this class. Dr. Horton is the best.
We had a study group for this class. We would tell her when we were meeting and if we had questions she would skype us. This class rocks.
All you have to do is show up and she will help you. This class is such an easy "A". Just come to class and do the work.
Dr. Horton totally rocks. She knows the subject matter and loves to talk. She is like totally chill. I totally recommend her class.
I loved this class. Dr. Horton does a good job explaining the material. You write 10 essays and a term paper. There are no quizzes or exams. If you show up, you will pass.
I like that this class is discussion based. I looked forward to coming to class because I liked hearing what my classmates had to say. The professor actually listened to what we had to say. She wasn't just going through a routine. She really cares. This is my all time favorite class at Santa Fe.
I loved this class. There was never a dull moment. She has a great sense of humor. I am a nursing major and my writing is not the best. But she read drafts of my essays and helped me out a lot. I totally recommend taking this class. This is one of my all time favorite classes at Santa Fe.
Professor Horton will go above and beyond to help students. She will read over a draft of your essay if you submit it on time. She will help you improve your writing skills. This is a great class.
My husband and I both took this class during Summer B. Dr. Horton is amazing. She is willing to spend time with you after class and to read over drafts of your essay. She cares about students and wants to see us succeed. I wish every teacher was like her.
Dr. Horton is a great professor. She wants to see students succeed. She read over drafts of my essays and gave me good feedback. I took this class Summer B. So we had two essays due each week. That was a lot. But with her help it was doable. She went out of her way to help students.
Dude, just totally show up to this class and talk. This is the only class I have taken at SFC that didn't feel like a two-year cattle drive from hell. Take this class. It is actually conversationally based. You will love her class. She is a total A+ professor.
This was such a great class. I talked my boyfriend into taking it this term so we could talk about the topics. Dr. Gayle is very helpful. She would stay after class and talk to students and she read through drafts of my essay and gave me some very good feedback.
Dr. Horton was amazing! She does make you read and write a lot of papers but the topics are very interesting. it is a tough class and you have to be in class for lectures, but she makes them interesting. she gives you good feedback on your work and is willing to help you out as well. would take her again in a heartbeat!
This is one of the best classes I have taken at Santa Fe. Dr. Horton makes class interesting. She really cares about her students. She stays after class to talk to students and she emails you back quickly. I loved this class.
I was really intimidated by her at first. She knows so much. But as soon as I stayed after class to talk to her she put me at ease. She really wants to help students. She explains the material well. She answers emails quickly. I like that she lets us send her rough drafts. This helped my grade in the class. I would take her again.
This class is amazing. Dr. Horton goes out of her way to make sure everyone understands the material. She stays after class to answer questions. This is the first profession I have had that does video conferences. I loved her class. She is a great teacher.
Awful professor dont take her. No matter how much you write she is never satisfied. Its a Medicine class however she goes off some unnecessary Philosophy rules. Even if you are on point she still will find something about your work to criticize.
Hardest grader ever. Im a straight A student without really trying and i put my heart and soul into this class and am getting a B.
This is only the third week of the term. I am taking her biomedical ethics class online. I love this class. She responds to emails very fast. The assignments are interesting. She has a checklist for each assignment. She really does a good job reading and commenting on drafts. I love this class.
This is the best class I have taken at SFC. Dr. Horton is available after class and via email. She is approachable. What strikes me about her is that she actually listens. She hears what you have to say. I too think that anyone who bad mouths this professor must not show up and participate in class. You get what you put in.
I can't believe anyone would give this professor a bad review. I sent her drafts of my essays and she gave me excellent feedback. I am science, not a writer. If you do your part in this class, you will get a good grade. I only got a "B" in the class but I was taking Calc. 3 and organic chemistry 2. She really helps you understand your priorities.
did not enjoy the class. you do a paper and get a good grade and the next paper you write the same way and get a C. No consistency on grading or what she wants from you. l would look at another teacher if I could do it again.
Dr. Horton is really helpful. If you send her a draft ahead of time she will give you good feedback. If you use the assignment checklist and read the material, this course is an easy A.
I love this class. You can email your essays to her and she will give feedback. She is number one.
Do not take this class. No instruction, no clear grading rubric and no consistency. All of the assignments are mini-essays that she grades on a whim... I have written hundreds of papers and have never received quite so vague and useless feedback. If you actually want to learn about ethics in medicine, don't take this class. Poor quality.
Worst professor at SF. Has clear bias and her grades are not consistent. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Take her! weekly essay is due on Sunday's, normally 500 word min. she gives a checklist each week. as long as you follow each list perfectly, you'll get a B at least. If you have the weekly essay done by Wednesday she will read your rough draft (definitely send it to her) Good topics. No mid term. The final is a 8 pg term paper.
DO NOT TAKE HER. The rating below are absolutely spot on. She is the worst professor I have ever had, and her grading is so random and inconsistent. Even if you follow the rubric, she will randomly throw in a C. Also, very political. If she doesn't agree with you, she'll mark you off.
I completely agree with the person below. I've literally followed her rubric and still marks me off if she doesn't agree with my point of view. I've literally emailed her highlighting where i answer the rubric and she doesn't even bother responding. DO NOT TAKE HER, I've def gotten a few 100% but its when i'm not giving MY opinion on a topic!
The class (Bio Ethics) is graded by 12 Discussion Posts due every Sunday night at 8pm, and one Final Term paper worth 40%. My first two DB posts I got a 95% on, but then she began grading the DB responses really hard. Also, don't think you can just whip out the DB post last second, because usually they're a 500 word minimum. Not my fav class.
Grades sooo hard, you think you nailed a paper, get it back and you got a 70. If you want to ruin your GPA take this class.
This is one of the hardest classes I have taken to date. The prompts are not very clear, and just when you thought you did well on a paper that you worked very hard on, you didn't. Dr. Horton is one of the toughest graders I have ever encountered thus far in college. If you are not proficient in writing, I do not recommend taking this class.
It seemed she ended up caring more about the writing in the assignments rather than checking if we understood the concepts. Read. material was difficult to comprehend. If you had questions you could email. I personally couldn't rely on the read. material alone. Must go by her grading rubric. Reviews provided were basically not helpful.
This professor is honestly the most frustrating one I have ever had. She has a rubric for all of her discussion posts (which is all the class consists of), and she still marks off FOR NO REASON. I'm honestly convinced she does not even read the posts made by students she just chooses a random grade and gives it. DON'T TAKE HER.
Does not grade fairly. Seems to grade lower on essays that do not support her personal opinions. I only took this class for my AA. Avoid this professor if possible.
DO NOT TAKE HER unless you want to ruin your GPA. There are PLENTY of other good philosophy professors at Santa Fe. She grades basically according to how she feels that day; she doesn't even seem to follow the rubric she provides. Oh, and she grades you based on your writing, without providing feedback on the actual philosophical content.
I took her ethics class Summer A. This is the one class I really looked forward to coming to. I said participation matters because if you come to class it is a lot easier to write the essays. I want to take her biomedical ethics class in the fall.
I really liked this class and looked forward to it. I enjoyed the class discussions. If you come to class and do the work this is really an easy A. I am surprised that she has some bad reviews. I bet these are students who skipped class and then blamed her for their bad grade. She is a great professor. She really helped me with my writing.
My whole study group is here rating her. She is a great teacher and her class is really chill. She encourages class discussion. I thought this class was going to be boring but it's my favorite class this term. She makes it fun and easy to do well. She wants you to do well.
I am a computer programer returning to school after 20+ years to finish my gen eds for my BA. I thought this class was going to be hard. But it has been the most interesting (and common sensical) class I have taken at SFC. I spoke with her on the phone on several occasions. She is capable and you can tell she wants to help you.
My favorite class this term. She hooked me the first week. She had us watch a video about how employers want people who can think critically and then said the class was all about critical thinking. I spent a lot of time in the writing lab because I want to be able to write a good cover letter when I go on the job market. Real world stuff.
I am active duty military finishing up my associates degree. Ms. Horton was professional and handled the class well. I was impressed by her knowledge of the material. Is good to finally here "Thank you for serving" from a teacher. Respect.
I am Amy National Guard and I am deployed outside the U.S. I was worried about keeping up with classes. This professor made the situation easy. In my first email she said, "Thank you for serving". She worked with my schedule.
I thought this was going to be a tough class (informal logic) because I am not good at math. I was surprised. This class is more like how to think well and argue well, how to be more convincing. I would definitely recommend this class. Take her. She is awesome.
This is one of the best classes I have taken at SFC. I loved the debates. I loved that the instructor explained both sides and let the class debate. I totally recommend this professor. She is the best.
I loved this class. I thought Horton was a really good teacher. She replied to emails quickly and answered all of my questions. Her lecture notes are really easy to understand. I spoke with her on the phone about the essays. She is a really helpful lady, very encouraging. I would recommend this class to a friend.
This is the best class I have taken at SFC. I enjoyed the topics. I feel like this class has made me more aware. I would give this professor an A+ rating.
This was the best class I have taken at Santa Fe. She replies to emails quickly and she gives good feedback. It is clear that she wants you to succeed. I am trying to get into her bioethics class this fall.
She is the best teacher I have had here at Santa Fe. The discussions were amazing. You can tell she actually cares about what we think.
I loved coming to class each day. The best thing about this class was the discussions. She makes you feel comfortable sharing your ideas. This was really the best class I have taken so far at SFC.
I really liked her class. She writes all the notes on the board before class starts. If you show up and take down the notes, the course is really easy. The questions on the quiz come mainly from the notes on the board. I would definitely recommend her. The class is easy and fun.
One of the best professors I've had so far. Attendance is not mandatory but it is recommended. If you prefer to read or listening to a lecture, this class is for you. All her quiz answers are in her notes she gives during lecture.
Do not take her online! She literally only grades on personal opinion, and when I emailed her asking her what I can do to improve... surprise surprise she did not respond. Not a fair grader, good teacher, or willing to work with you person.
I am applying for nursing school for the fall term. This class was a requirement. I was dreading taking this course because I am a science person. Yet I loved the course. I loved debating the topics. I felt this class was totally relevant.
This was clearly my favorite class this term. She is a really funny person and makes class fun. She is easy to talk to and approachable after class. She returns emails quickly and is really helpful.
I loved this class. The topics were really interesting. I really liked the readings and I think she did a good job teaching the class. I liked that I could email her and she would reply quickly. This class really made me think.
I totally looked forward to coming to this class each and every day. The discussions were the best. The professor got everyone involved in the class discussions. This was my favorite class this summer. I am trying to add in to her bioethics class for the fall term. She is the best professor I have had at SFC.
I thought this was a great class. I thought the topics were interesting. I like how every felt comfortable sharing their views. Dr. Horton is funny and makes everyone feel comfortable speaking in class. I am glad I look her in person instead of online. It was her personality and her enthusiasm for the subject that made the class so good.
I am a combat veteran and so I bring a different perspective to rating teachers. I look for competence and respect. I found Dr. Horton more than competent and I appreciated the respect she showed to me and to other students in the class. I didn't think that class was an easy A. I had to work for it. I thought she was fair in her grading.
I totally recommend taking Ms. Horton. She is really helpful. She responds to emails quickly and gives good suggestions for improving essays. She is the best teacher I have had so far at FGC.
Twelve weekly discussion posts of 300-500 words. Easy. Four 3-5 page essays are due and you can email her for advice on how to compose the essay. Think outside the box and put effort into learning valuable and fun material :D Advice: Always find a way to apply ethical theories learned in Module 1. This is an easy way to fill up word count.
Biomed ethics has been my favorite class I've taken in college. I truly feel like a better person for taking it bc it forces you to learn about controversial topics and hear different points of view. She tells you exactly what she wants to see in the papers so as long as you put in the time you'll get a good grade. Always quick to reply to emails.
This class was ridiculous. DO NOT TAKE ONLINE!!! Not sure if this is because I took the online version of this course but it was horrible. 1000 words a week in discussions. 3 3-5 page essays and an 8-10 page term paper. Must have 10 sources for term paper. Horrible grader. Doesn't give meaningful feedback.
Took this class online and enjoyed it very much. The topics were interesting and relevant. A lot of reading every week and a discussion/short essay due. She tells you exactly what she is looking for when she grades and as long as you make the adjustments on the next assignment you get a passing grade. I would definitely recommend.
Her class was composed on 3 papers over the span of the semester and a discussion post once a week. As long as you do the discussions and do the papers, there's no reason not to pass. She's a pretty easy grader so as long as you meet the criteria for word count and stuff, you'll most likely get an A on all the assignments and papers.
she's a great teacher! if you try at all you'll get an A! we take a DQ and quiz every week in the begining its a little difficult. but once you get to animal right its like walking on easy street. essays in the class were a little difficult but last one was easy peasy. she get a little side track but she writes great notes. TAKE HER!
I thought this class was going to be boring but it turned out to be very interesting. I loved debating the topics. Horton is really down to earth. Its clear she wants to help students. She answers emails quickly. I thought the weekly quizzes were a drag until I took the final. Then I say the final had the same questions as the quizzes.
There are weekly posts that are pretty much pass/fail, three essays and a paper. The essays are just making your posts longer. the topics are interesting. I loved the class.
I took Professor Horton because she had good reviews on Rate My Professor, but she was a very tough grader with unrealistic expectations. There were discussions, quizzes, and papers due every few days. Not to mention the fact that there was no clear schedule. If you are in college and want to have any sort of life I would recommend not taking her.
Professor Horton's class was the first class I have ever gotten a grade below a B in. I am a straight A student and taking her class was terrible for my GPA. When you get your papers graded, you either pass slightly or fail miserably.
I took this class online. Every Sunday there was a discussion post (300-500 words) about different topics you need to read about. Three 3-5 page essays and the final term paper is 8-10 pages. She's a really tough grader on the essays, but her feedback helps a lot. It's not hard to pass the class if you put in the work and take her advice.
This class was supposed to be my easy class but turned out to be my most stressful one this semester. She grades based on her personal opinion & if you email her asking about a low grade she does not respond. Or at least takes 3+ days to. She is a tough grader, you either pass or fail, & there are a LOT of readings. GPA killer ):< I DO NOT RECOMMEND
First let me say I am an A student. My GPA before this class was 3.87 because I got a B in one class. This horrible woman graded me Cs on all 3 essay papers because my opinions dont match hers. The 3 essays are 60% of your grade. I have never, and I mean NEVER received a C on any paper or any class in my college career. DO NOT TAKE HER.
STAY AWAY. If you have any other alternative and don't have to take this class, take something else! The subject is really interesting, but the way she grades the papers makes it impossible to get an A. I took this as an elective because I thought it would be fun and now I'm kicking myself. GPA killer!
Absolutely horrible experience. Im convinced she doesnt even read discussions, essays or term papers before she gives the grades out. Its impossible to get a good grade on anything in this class, and she doesnt help or give good feedback at all. I was very excited for this class then I realized how rude she was. Wouldnt recommend.
Basically she phoned it in. No communication, just "here's all the work and here's when it's due, good luck". REALLY tough grader with no meaningful feedback - there were 3 essays that made up almost all the grade and she seemed to grade on structure rather than content, which makes no sense at all. ZERO help with final exam preparation. BAD.

Most confusing class I've ever taken. She stopped communicating with us midway, discussion posts were graded only based on deadlines and word count,3 essays were worth literally 75% of the grade, and were graded based on the thesis. She mentioned that we had a final 5 days prior, usually I'm always on the professors' side, but she was just lazy.
This woman is a nightmare. -Low scores on nearly every assignment where I disagreed with her views and never explained why. - Gave me a zero and marked late an assignment that was turned in on time bc she said I copied the notes verbatim. Plagiarism checker said it was 2%. -Low score bc I quoted the PHILOSOPHER and not HER OWN WORDS
This class was pretty straightforward, with a quiz and discussion post in which you have to respond to two classmates weakly. Don't forget to respond-she will not give you points back. Also a final research paper which is the same weight as the semester exam, so take your time. I rated this class a 3 because while it's not hard, philosophy hurts me
Gayle Horton is the worst professor I've ever had. Essays are your whole grade and she is a TOUGH grader, with no feedback. Takes a week to answer emails if she answers at all. I have never gotten less than an A on any paper I've written in college but she have me C's. GPA KILLER.
The class has discussion posts every week, which is nice. 2 papers and a term paper that is worth 40% of the grade!! Doctor Horton is great, she gives good reviews and feedback however is a tough grader. If you are not good at writing do not take her but if you are, youll succeed. Also there is a lot of reading to do so be prepared.
I wouldn't recommend this class to my worst enemy. If I could give a 0 I would, she is the toughest grader, if you get higher than a C on the essays its a miracle. If you have a different opinion than her on discussion posts its an automatic D. Don't even bother emailing her, she hardly answers and if she does its rude and condescending.
I genuinely wish I had never taken her class and I can't say that about many professors. I doubt she reads essays past the first paragraph when they're worth 30% of your grade (she will write comments about missing things that can be found later in the essay). She will give you a low grade with no helpful critiques beyond "read the rubric".
DO NOT TAKE HER. She does not communicate well. She is very rude.
I thought this class was a fairly easy "A"--you just have do do the work. Her lecture notes help make the readings easier to follow. The discussion posts were only 300 words but I find myself writing more just because I found the material interesting. I hadn't written a paper since high school and was nervous but she made the process a lot easier.
Dr. Horton is great! I was really worried about this class. It was the last class I needed to finish my AA. She was great. She helped me a lot and just made the course easier to understand. I would recommend her class 100 percent. I have never had a professor return emails so quickly.
This was one of the best classes I have taken so far. She is really an inspirational professor. She worked with me to help me write good papers. I never did this kind of writing before. But she made the papers much easier. You just have to reach out to her. That made a difference for me. I would take her again, totally down to earth.
Everyone in my study group got an A. Horton was great. We could email her and she would email back right away. Do not listen to the slackers. If you are serious about getting into nursing school, take her class. She really cares about students and wants us to do well. I wish she taught nursing claasses. I would take her again.
This was my first term back to college after several years. I don't really do online courses. But this was the only one that fit my schedule. Dr. Horton made the class doable for me. We talked on the phone several times. She makes writing the papers alot easier. I would take her class again in a heartbeat. She is easy to talk to.
Gayle Horton is the best professor I have had at Santa Fe. She is passionate about philosophy and willing to help. This was a great class. She is very clear about what she expects. You just have use the checklists.
Great teacher. She is always willing to help. She makes writing the papers really easy. I wish all my teachers were like her.
Horton is dope! She is one of the best professors I have had at SFC. She is always willing to help students. I would definitely take her again. She made the work interesting and fun.
I am part of the study group where we all got an A. Horton reached out and asked us to review her. She is awesome. I never had an instructor who was so concerned about us and who said we could text her if we had questions. She even video conferenced with us when no one could figure out what we were supposed to do. She goes out of her way to help.
This was one of the best classes I have taken at SFC. There was a weekly discussion post that was only 300 words. There were three essays based on the discussion questions. No exams. You can tell Horton cares about her students. She returns emails quickly and always offers helpful suggestions. I would take her again.
This was one of the best classes I have taken at Santa Fe. Everyone in my study group loved the class and we all did really well. The weekly discussion posts are interesting and they don't take that long to write. There were three essays. They weren't too bad. The outlines she provides really help. I would definately recommend this class.
I thought this was a really interesting course. I am a tech person and I found the discussion on artificial intelligence fascinating. The weekly discussions are pretty much pass/fail. The quizzes made you do the reading. I don't see how anyone could complain about her. She just expects you to do the work. I would recommend her class.
I may have a different perspective. I am returning to college after working in the healthcare field for 22 years. I thought Horton was great. I was surprised to see the number of students complain about the her. She just expects you to do the work and she will help if you ask. The outlines she provides for the essays make the course fairly easy.
I work full time and Shands and I still got an A in her class. Horton is a wonderful instructor. She is always willing to help and she returns emails quickly. If you ask her to read a draft of your essay she wil give you good feedback. Its clear she wants her students to be successful. If you are a slacker, just don't take her class.
Awesome class. Horton is great. She is so helpful. It's clear she wants you to well in the course. I am not a strong writer but I learned a lot in her class. I sent her drafts of my essays and she gave me good feedback. She told me what I need to do to bring my essay up to an A. I am starting to feel more confident in my writing.
I have taken two classes with Ms. Horton, one online and one in person. I liked her in person better. She is really funny and makes everyone laugh. But her online course was great too. She is easy to talk to and she goes out of her way to help us. I would take a third class with her if I needed another humanities credit. Fun classes.
I was seven months pregnant with a high risk pregnancy when I took her course. Horton worked with me to keep up with the assignments. Without her help and encouragement, I don't think I would have completed the course. She really has a heart and you can tell she wants to help students. She is a top-notch professor. Take her class.
Professor Horton is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about teaching. She knows the material and she wants to help students do well. Everyone in my study group did really well in her class. We thought she went out of her way to help us. If you are serious about getting into nursing school, I would definitely recommend her class.
This class was an easy A. There were 10 discussion posts and three essays. Horton grades the posts on effort. She provides detailed feedback which makes writing the essays easier. She even provides outlines and sample thesis statements for the essays. I would wholeheartedly recommend her class. She made this course easy for me.
Dr. Horton is an amazing teacher. I work full time and she made the class doable for me. The outlines she provides make the papers easy. The weekly discussion posts are pass/fail. She really cares about her students and she is easy to talk to. I recommend her class.
This is one of the best classes I have taken at SFC. Horton is great. She knows the material and she is always willing to help. Returns emails quickly. I would definately recommend her class.
super easy professor! She gives outlines for essays and is a very easy grader. Prof encourages students to participate during in class discussions but you don't really have to attend because quizzes come straight from the powerpoints (which she posts). good gpa booster!
Interesting professor. Would not recommend but wouldn't say she was horrible. Give's hardly any feedback on essays and when you ask her for more feedback she just says "review the rubric." Also, post things late in the semester and gives you about 5 days to complete the assignment. Just a interesting professor.
I would recommend to take her for the online course. There are 3 essays and 1-2 discussion posts per week. Sometimes, the amount of coursework is excessive (especially if you are taking a full course load), but doable.
This class consists of 2-3 assignments a week with 2-3 papers. When you ask for guidance she will either not answer your questions or will give an inadequate response. Professor also does not share rubric or other guidelines for assignments. Would definitely recommend taking a different Professor, not worth the hassle.
This course is doable if you have nothing else going on in life. She assigns a minimum of 10 hours of reading every 2-3 days for discussions that basically don't affect your grade. 11 assignments = 10% total grade.Quizzes are mispelled and may be based on readings, or her notes about the readings which are not always accurate.Must write essays well
Professor Horton is an engaging instructor who makes the workload manageable. The course outlines and feedback are super helpful. I found Unstuck study useful for prepping the essays.
Where to begin? Halfway through the semester and, she is easily my least favorite professor thus far at Santa Fe (4 semesters in). If you truly love yourself, do yourself a favor. Do not take her course! Her essay critiques are based on opinion, & the feedback isn't constructive. I enjoy writing, & this class is so discouraging. A-B student here.
Literally infuriating. You WILL NOT be able to reach her under any circumstances, you will get an automatic 50% even if you meet the page quota but she excepts you to write over the page quota. No feedback too I hated having her as a teacher.
Work itself wasn't difficult but, only thing that really affects your grade are the essays. Tough grader if you don't do well on one of the essays you won't get higher than a B+. I wouldn't particularly choose to take her again but the class wasn't the end of the world. Also difficult to reach and has strict criteria for late work.
Avoid this professor, it will make your life so much easier. Your grade will be determined by 3 essays all other assignments do not add much to your grade. Her grading criteria is harsh and difficult to meet. Difficult to reach as well , there are better professors for this course.
