WARNING: If you want to get a good grade, you need to put your own opinions aside. Even if you are right. She is against technology, internet, and the change in literature. Don't try to be a good writer by talking about both sides of an argument during an essay. Only talk about her side.
AVOID AVOID AVOID. Do not take this class. It will make you entirely miserable and the essays are brutal- brutal to write and brutally marked. She speaks about 2 words/hr, too.
Excellent prof. Clearly defines what is expected for you to know from each novel, as well as encourages you to participate in class discussions and provides you with positive feedback with an unique idea. Tough marker, but if you follow her requirements, you should be fine
Basically if you want to do well you have to agree with her perspective. Regardless of how obscure her connections or observations are between the books, Use them. Or fail, your choice
She speaks to her students, and she provides fantastic feedback on midterms which allows you to learn where you went wrong and improve drastically.
Lectures are not worth going to. This course teaches you how to write sentences, something a 10 year old child in elementary school can do. She is against technology. DGDs are boring. This course fails miserably to educate you in writing and is a complete waste of time. If you value your life DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
PLs avoid her class because you will be writing the stupid report since the beginning of the semester. Compare to another sections, this is not an "easy to pass one". When going to her lectures, you won t get anything except sentence corrections(boring). The TAs are hard markers. My worst class ever.
Her lectures are long, boring, and her voice drags on and on. The content of the course itself is extremely dry, making it difficult to attend class. The TA's mark extremely hard and the DGD's are super boring. She has very strict views (hates technology etc..) and she will yell at you if you talk during class. Avoid if you can!!!!!
The prof was very forward about expectations and teaches the course as best as she can. The course itself is really boring and besides the fact that it is compulsory for Engineering students, its a complete waste of time.
Professor Bar-On Santor really encouraged me to pursue my studies in English Literature. She knows her stuff, and by the end of the class you'll know it just as well. She gives in-depth summaryanalysis, line per line, and everything she says ends up on the midtermfinal. If you listen, do the readings, and retain what she says, it's an easy A!
Once you get past the accent and misuse of words she is such a nice lady who truly wants you to do well in the course. Posts all her lecture slides online. DGDs are a must since all tests are done then. You can tell she loves her job.
I really enjoyed this prof! I did find that sometimes she was a little repetitive, but she was very helpful with the assignments and showed that she cared about her students. Would take her class again!
Her class is hard for students who use English as the second language.
We spend a lot of time talking about information that won't be on the exam, and yet examinations are long and specific. (We spent four classes on Frankenstein and did not even reach the part where The Monster is created before the semester ended)
Lectures are very boring but she is a kind prof, if you take her class MAKE SURE YOU DONT TAKE THE DGD WITH CORY SAMPSON he is the worst DGD instructor i have ever had.
We were "taught" in this class that criticism should be both constructive and correct, so: -The readings in the class were boring, pedantic and always based on the prof's anti-technology obsession. Please find some more diverse readings -The material should be taught faster, with no superfluous nagging to students about electronic distractions
The readings and class in general are incredibly boring. Almost everything is straightforward and her tests are identical to the practice tests. Went to class every week and fell asleep every single time. Not sure why I went so often.
Please take her class for Technical report writing. You can easily get a good grade in her class. She has 3ish tests (not midterms) and 2 writing assignments. The second writing assignment is basically fixing all the errors you made in the first assignment and expanding on it. And her DGDs aren't too bad either.
Her lectures are incredibly boring & uninspired, but the course is extremely easy so you really don't need to show up for class. Just read through the slides and you'll be covering the material in a much faster paced. I could go through each of her 1h 30min lectures in 15 mins.
She gave lots of feedback and support when writing reports. Make sure to attend the lectures frequently and always attend the DGD as they're essential to pass the midterms. Make sure to do the readings before the midterm and you'll be golden.
Well laid-out course; truly a kind, caring and genuine professor. (If you are not really interested in improving your language and are instead just looking to complete a mandatory course, perhaps she is not your best choice. Her session requires slightly more work than other sessions.)
Great professor. Normally I don't like English and dreaded having to take one as part of my degree but Gefen was such a good teacher that I enjoyed it. I legitimately improved my writing ability (which was horrendous before) and learned a lot from her class. Probably one of the best profs for this required course.
For me I hate this class, but that's not her fault, its just the material. She is a very caring and well prepared prof, but sometimes her lectures got extremely boring. I heard shes one of the better teachers for this course.
Gefen is a very nice and caring prof. However, she teaches a very dull course (ENG1112) so it's tough to stay engaged. The lectures feel very long but she does her best to try and be passionate about the material. Overall Gefen is a very good prof who teaches a course that it's hard to really care about.
She's really boring and I'm not sure if that's her fault or the course's fault but be ready for a snooze fest. There's an attendance mark so go to class, tests aren't that hard literally just reread powerpoints.
Overall a really great professor. Her lectures can be very dull and boring but it's mostly because it's an English class. She truly cares about her students and makes sure that they all do the best they can in class. I learned a lot in the DGD's and if you can, take the DGD with Nick Slagter. He's one of the best TA's I've ever had.
I love her!!!!!!!!! She was always so understanding and caring. Took the time to know her students by name and is just the biggest sweetheart. I have only had one class with her, but wish I had taken more!!! She made the material accessible for all of her students.
Pretty good prof Extremely nice and always willing to help However there is a lot of content in her class you have to do to in order to do well but the content is no too bad just go to the dgds and READ THE SUGGESTED CONTENT BEFORE THE TEST some questions are very specific so a summary of the book wont cut it most of the time and youll be fine
This is probably the easiest course I've ever taken. Just show up to lectures to get the attendance marks and do other work in the back. The midterms are super easy as long as you do all the recommended readings. Is it also really easy to do well on the papers as long as you follow the criteria and talk to your TA.
One of my favourite professors. She gets to know her students on a more personal level. Follow along during lectures and DGDs and you'll pass with flying colours!
An absolute sweetheart. The class itself is easy IF YOU DO THE READINGS (Don't try to skim, that's how she gets you). My only complaint is that the readings themselves were very dull most of the time.
It's not hard, but attendance is basically required to know what's happening and to pass the class with good marks.
I don like English class, but she was at least interesting some of the time, I did actually learn stuff in her class
SUPER BORING CLASS, the lectures were very dry and she made it difficult to want to come to class . Yet, she was a pretty easy marker on the papers and was really good about trying to get you as many marks as she can . Class was super easy just bring work from other classes to work on
The class is very easy. Show up, pay attention and start your report early and you're guaranteed an A. The tests are sort of hard because there is a lot of reading required. She's probably the hardest ENG prof but she's still pretty easy.
Very boring class but there is nothing she can do about that. Do the readings and participate in the DGD and you'll get an easy A. Don't worry too much about paying attention in the lectures they're really just a third-grade grammar class. Start your report early and apply the feedback she gives to the first report. Good luck
The class reminded me of book club, we all showed up and got to talk about the text we were reading and our own personal experiences with the themes. She smiles when teaching literally the whole time and it is very evident she loves what she does. Is a very caring prof that wants to see you succeed.
Professor Gefen, you are truly a gem. One of the best profs I had first year. Hated English in H.S, and dreaded going to the first lecture, but I loved this class! Wasn't a huge fan of the lectures, but the report was really fun to write. I loved how comfortable she makes you feel when sharing your answers, with absolutely no judgement! 10/10 !!
She is a dedicated and caring professor, she tries to make the lectures engaging. Be prepared to read A LOT.
Great professor, and very kind. Always smiles and loves what she does. HOWEVER, her tests are beyond reason. She teaches to eliminate vagueness, ambiguity, redundancy, etc. but still manages to write her test questions with all these things. Ridiculous.
Gefen is extremely nice and accommodating. I actually learned a lot of material that has definitely improved my writing ability. She gives many different examples similar to her tests, which are pretty easy if you study. The required readings can be very long. She's a decent grader. Overall, the class is boring, but she's a good prof.
Loved her. Especially with online classes rn, she is the most understanding and sweetest professors I have ever met! She cares about her student's mental health and is very easy to reach out to and chat with! Overall amazing teacher!
She is an AMAZING person! So happy and class is judgement free. The class was overall minimal effort, to do well on tests you just have to take notes and read the course readings which can be done in a few hours. No exam just a final report. I learned so much about writing which I can actually see being very useful for the rest of my life.
Tests are open book (10 MC and 10 short answers) and very straightforward. Make sure you read the assigned readings for the tests. Grading is fair for the tests and the report. Lectures are mandatory (attendance grade) and you'll have to do one discussion starter during a lecture/DGD (participation grade) which is easy! Lectures were very chill.
She is a very nice professor, and always ready to help her students. She is very easy to get in contact with outside of class through email, and very accommodating to her students especially with tech issues and covid-related struggles. Her grading is fair and her feedback is easy to understand. Really chill lectures and dgds too!! take her class !
Professor Bar-On Santor is a great and caring professor. The course content is pretty boring but she tries her best. Review the topics discussed in class and read the readings and you'll do well on the tests. Start your report early and speak to your TA outside of class to know what they are expecting from you in your report.
All the other teachers gave their students such good marks and this filler course somehow brought my average down. Useless
Professor Santor is great! Although lectures are heavy, she tried her best to do. For reports and tests, the feedback is detailed and helpful. During the pandemic, she understands the time zone difference that international students are facing. Just a reminder, for tests, be sure to read DGD PPTs, handouts, and selected readings from DGD handouts.
Really nice prof and super accommodating. She offers late submissions w only 1% penalty each weekday. Her lecture notes are thorough and the tests are fairly simple since you can usually find the answers either in dgd or lecture notes. However, she sometimes runs out of time during class and has to cover things asynchronously
Nice prof but doesn't always give clear instructions. PPT is over 100 slides (3-4 lectures in one PPT). Wouldn't want prof again bc of the length of the PPT. Had 3 quizzes and 4 writing assignments excluding the exam. You're only tested on what was taught in class. The course is open book. You're being graded on attendance.
She is honestly a real gem. So sweet and considerate and never gets irritated at students if they ask the same questions again. She's very patient and kind and the class is very straightforward. You'll learn a lot of writing skills that will help you your whole life! Solid elective choice 100% recommend.
Professor Santor is a good professor. She is nice and even though the lectures can be boring, I actually learned a lot from them. It's most of the same stuff covered in high school but I actually understand how to apply it now. There is a lot of reading but it is doable. The tests are super easy. I studied the night before and got >90 on all 3.
This professor knows how to get the material across clearly. The tests were fair game if you read all the required readings prior to the test. Feedback on tests and the report paper were clear and fair. Take this prof, you won't regret it.
Not even gonna lie I went to like 2 classes the whole semester, read all of the lecture notes the morning of the tests, and did both report 1 and 2 in a few hours and still ended up with an A-, so needless to say this was the easiest class I've ever taken, as for Gefen she seemed like a good prof i think idk lol
Professor Gefen is the sweetest, kindest, and most caring person you will ever meet. When you share your thoughts on something, she really listens. The tests are easy as long as you do your readings and pay attention in class. If you can, please take this course with her! She is always so accommodating and understanding of everyone's situation.
Professor Bar-On Santor is a truly amazing professor! She cares about her students and she is very accommodating. If you attend class and do the assigned readings you should have no problem getting a good grade in this class.
Overall this was a pretty easy class, even though English is my second language and my strong suit is definitely NOT writing. The class was not the most fun but the prof made it as bearable as she could. As a person shes the sweetest and super understanding. Just make sure you do the readings!
Classes moved slowly and we just went through powerpoints on grammar and other english topics but prof Santor was engaging with the class and liked to talk a lot so it was still interesting. Tests relied heavily on class readings and fixing grammar problems. The only assignment was a final report but don't procrastinate as it can be long...
Very good professor, knows what she's doing. She is also very organized and responds to emails pretty quickly. Finally, she is very generous with extensions if needed.
Classes are informative and expectations are clear. She is very kind and gave me a large extension
The fact that she made us do a test 3 during final week when the school policy recommends not giving any is beyond frustrating. Whenever I'd email her, instead of answering my email, she would refer me to the content. I'd go to the content and I just wouldn't find what I was looking for. This professor may 'smile' but deepdown, it's all fake !
The course material itself I found to be pretty boring, however, I think she did a good job at trying to make it as bearable as possible. The assignments and quizzes aren't overly difficult, and there aren't very many of them. The midterm was very straightforward. She can be a bit unorganized at times it seems but overall, she's pretty good.
She cares a lot about her students, she gives you extra time if needed
As someone who rarely leaves comments on this website, I have to say Gefen is an excellent professor who cares for her students and wishes them success.
I do not usually leave reviews but Professor Gefen is definitely worthy of one! Yes she repeats herself A LOT but she does it so that the material is drilled into our brain. She made class engaging by showing videos and by making student participate. She is also very direct on what will be on the test. But beware there may be a lot to read...
This teacher is super nice. If you have any problems, you can email her (she answers within minutes, very quick) and she will always be flexible to find a solution for you. The only hard part of this class, well, more time consuming than hard is to read the 30 articles and books given to you throughout the semester and study them for the tests.
Truly a gem of a prof. Doesn't make your life difficult and she truly wants you to do well! Very accommodating and gives great lectures :)
Professor Bar-On Santor is incredibly nice. I was able to join her class a week into the semester and she was super accommodating for me. She gives extensions, and if you send an email with a reason why you cannot attend class, she would not deduct the point for it. One downfall is she's very picky with her word choices and comma placements.
Had Prof. Santor online for tech. writing, the lectures were not super engaging although there was often chances for participation, but not required. She was nice though, and I really liked her grading scheme for the final project. She gave me a couple extensions over the semester, even for the final essay which was surprising. Very reasonable prof
Her lectures are mandatory and you have to participate in at least one in her class or in the DGD's to have an A. Online assignments were very easy and the final paper was fairly graded. She talks a lot during her lectures so it can be boring but she teaches you all the content you need to know in the end.
First time using this site, but this prof is great, she is always positive which makes the lectures much more enjoyable. Assignments are very easy as well. Definetly take her over other teachers for this class.
one of the best profs at uOttawa. Take her for any ENG class
I highly recommend taking any course with Professor Santor. She is hands down the best professor I have had; extremely caring, gives extensions, has a true passion for teaching, delivers the material in a way that makes the course very easy, and her lectures are extremely laid-back. Put in effort in your writing, and you'll walk away with an A.
Great professor! Understands introverts, allows sending presentations instead of presenting in class, opens book tests, and is always ready to help. The best professor at Uottawa I wish she was my professor for all my courses, or other professors would learn how to teach from her.
The professor is very understanding and accommodating, allowing introverted students to email their work instead of presenting it. Her open-book tests are easy and take a whole day to finish, and she is always ready to help. She is the best professor at Uottawa, and I learned a lot from her. Other professors need to learn how to teach from her.
Amazing teacher with a heart for reading. Lectures are hard to pay attention to. Just stay on top of readings and engage in discussions.
one of the easiest courses of my first sem, I would 1000% recommend her to anyone taking it. There are no assignments and all her tests/exams are online, and she lets you submit them up to 11:59pm. One caveat is that you gotta study a good portion of the lecture materials on your own (she gives you the slides) but that's a p good price to pay imo
Everyone is saying that theres gna be a lot to read but ima let you know right now that I havent paid attention in a single class and every test (theres 3) is worst 15% each and its online and the most straightforward test. I dont read any of the texts she assigns and still get 85-100% on the tests which take at most an hour to write.
the goat
Gefen is nice but the class is dead boring. Also I consider myself to be pretty decent at english but the tests were so confusing sometimes, plus there was so much required reading for them. Paper wasn't awful, wrote it in 2 1/2 days and got an A- but I think it's hard to do like REALLY good on it. There are easier profs to take this class from.
Prof Gefen is a nice professor. Very caring and respect her students. I emailed her at 11 pm and she responded quickly and graded my late essay draft. The tests are all open-book. You can submit them until 11:59 pm. I didn't even study for the test. Honestly, I didn't expect to get an A in English. If you want an easy grade, take this course!
While Tech Report Writing isn't a course most students took seriously, her course rewards you for studying it seriously. Fun-to-participate lectures, extensive grammar lessons even though you already speak English, and a final report you should definitely not procrastinate on. Overall great prof. Wish there was more English in engineering.
her lectures are clear and there were never surprises on tests, as long as you pay attention. you will likely have to go over a lot of the lecture material outside of class time as she expects students to know the stuff that wasn't covered in class. there is a small presentation but she's considerate and won't make you present if you don't want to.
The absolute sweetest, you can tell she really cares about her students and grades quite easily. In class discussions were also very engaging.
Tests are open book. Not all content is covered in class, so you'll have to finish the powerpoints on your own time. Lectures are boring but she takes attendance for marks so go. She's nice and has a good policy about extensions and extra time if you need it.
Gefen is such an angel! She is super passionate about the content she teaches which makes her mandatory lectures enjoyable. She is also extremely accommodating with deadlines and responds promptly to emails. All of her tests are open-book and make up 45% of your final grade when combined, so use them to boost your mark! Take her if you can!
Ive had her twice now, she is so understanding of absences and late work, very sweet professor to interact with. I will warn that midterms and exams are almost solely about class discussions, so you HAVE to show up, the lecture slides are not enough. She does give out pretty easy grades though.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN, she would give extensions for assignments, and it truly felt like she cared. She was nitpicky with grading however, so be careful with your punctuation. She took attendance, but it was necessary since not all the info was on the slides, but if you just email her a short message to why you can't go she doesn't dock off points
Take any of her classes!! Amazing Professor, I even got a recommendation from her for a job which ended up hiring me. She is such a lovely and sweet hearted professor and super easy going. It was one of the easiest and chillest class I've ever had. I would choose all the courses she taught if I could.
Sweet ahh teacher bruh. Always giving out extensions always understanding and very nice. You do gotta go to class if you wanna do well on your essays gangs and also she very strict on punctuation so be careful on that peeps. Theres also a couple of punctuation quizzes here and there but they easy type shi. Anyways great prof, would recommend fr
I cannot stress how much I enjoyed being in her class. She was always happy to help, no matter how stupid I was having was. She was always in the same mood: happy. I would 1000% recommend her to anyone, just show up to class and you will be fine.
Professor Santor is so great! She has so much care for her students and will go out of her way to help you succeed. Her assignments are clear and flexible, and if you attend the DGD's and lectures you will be very well prepared for the tests. Amazing person, would definitely take again.
not too hard to understand, very nice person
The professor is very understanding and caring. Doesn't force you to read out loud if you don't want to. The content is dull, and I found that some things were over-explained, but the material was easy. I found some of the grading to be somewhat nit-picky, and I couldn't get an A+ on any of my work.
Very sweet and caring! She gives us the exact questions for the quizzes done during our DGD's so we can prepare in advance and gives us clear instructions for what is expected for the midterm, final report and final exam. Lectures can be long and boring bc she goes through many slides, but there is flexibility for the presentation part (BIC).
