sucky subject to teach, not best dicussion leader, clear what is test material
Very nice guy who knows and loves philosophy, but very boring class.
Very poor at lectures. Dont take this prof!!!!!!!!!!
Very hard to understand and follow, hard to stay awake in class, stay out if you
No Comments
I have never heard anyone babble about nothing so much. I feel I am now dumber
if you could bottle his class up in a pill, it would cure insomnia worldwide
You will understand this quote "your pillow needs a pillow" by the end of class

very unorganized lectures, very boring class
The class IS boring, but Shang is the nicest guy!
knows what he's talking about but you'll have no idea what he's talking about.
didn't even listen in class and got an A-. Cool guy, but hard to understand
I COULD NOT stay awake. grade system is NOT clear. i got NOTHING from him. read.
Wow; i've never a professor as boring. I had no idea what he was talking about. But he doesnt take attendence and grades incredibly easy
The most boring thing I have ever had to live through. I learned nothing. Exams suck, they are dumb. Horrible class, GET OUT
Worst class from 4 yrs of GVSU. How many ways can you say bad?
Very smart and funny guy. Has interesting stories and opinions. Hard to follow at times, but if you show a genuine interest you can learn alot from him
If you like Philosophy, you'll learn a lot from him. He's very smart and knows what he's talking about. Can be really boring, but if you need help and show you are atleast attempting to learn something he'll give you a good grade.
A very cool person and professor. He's not hard to understand if you actually try to understand him. Very easy grader. i turned in a term paper late, with 2/6 sources and still got an a. Very helpful if you see him at his office hours.
Awesome
Good professor if you are interested in philosophy otherwise very boring. Read the book for the exams. Very willing to help with questions during office hours.
Very boring class. Exams were easy as long as you just looked up the terms in the book and memorized what to write. Gives take home quizes which were easy as well. If you're really intersted in philosophy you'd love his class---otherwise it's a good time to take a nap!!
I couldn't understand a word he said most of the time, and he was crazy...The mid-term sucked and the class in general sucked
He is a pretty good professor. If you are at least mildy interested in philosophy, this class is pretty cool. The take home quizzes are easy, although the exams are fairly tough. ?He can be boring in class, and tends to wander off the subject from time to time, or expand it more than needed.
The professor I have ever had at Grand Valley. He takes attendance and takes 5% off your final grade for each day you miss, so I you miss two classes, you can't even get an A. Is very unclear about what he wants and you can hardly understand him. STAY AWAY FROM HIS CLASS!!!!
sometimes hard to understand unless you take the time to closely communicate. the material he chooses to present is wonderful, and his actual FEEL, not just academic analysis of the material really makes for a different experience in class. Not to metnion that he will grade you leniently if you can display a social understanding.
i so hated this class, not because of the teacher but because of the subject, the book sucks, the teacher expects you to be there, listen, and regurgitate information. not bad and not good, a fair and nice grader....if you have to take this class this prof is not the worst one out there
Super nice guy. Class was more on the boring side until we started the presentations. In order to do well just come to class and memorize facts on philosophers and their theories. He has a tendency to explain things in a very complext manner, but they were never as hard as he made them out to be. Overall, not a bad class.
I've had him for two independent studies now - He is one of the most intelligent professors I've ever had, and by far the one I've learned the most from. He takes difficult material, brings it alive, and shows it to you in a light that makes understanding easy.
Geling Shang is absolutely terrific. Get him for Eastern Philos specifically, as this is his forté. He's especially learned about Taoism, and also knows mounds about Buddhism and Confucianism. He loves the subject matter and loves his students. If you want to succeed in his class, you don't have to be great at PHI; you just have to try your best.
Shang is very intelligent, and is a nice guy. While the class was hard to sit through (three hours long late at night), he really knows his stuff. While the test were more on the harder side-essay-the quizzes were all take home. He's a very kind teacher and loves input from the class on what should be on the tests. I recomend him.
Is a viable fountain of knowledge about the subject matter, and does well in conveying it to the class in an interesting manner. Tests are essay/definition and are somewhat difficult, however he seems to grade more easily on papers and projects.
Shang Geling is, perhaps, the most refreshing person I have ever met in academia. He is highly intelligent and philisophical, almost to the point of aggravation, but a breath of fresh air most of the time. Take this guys class and learn from him.
very good
If you do beyond the requirements, you'll dominate. A great guy.
Awesome teacher, probably one of my favorites. The class may seem boring at first glance, but if you really study it and pay attention to what he says it will really come alive.
Shang is very intelligent and knowledgeable on the subject matter, however, he is very difficult to understand. He has trouble presenting the topics and sparking discussion. While I tried to get interested in this class, it is very difficult and boring.
He was hard to understand and the class was very boring. He is very fair though. We only had a midterm, final, and one paper. The other assignments were extra credit. He wants you to do well and helps you get there.
Shang is a really crappy prof who doesn't understand any viewpoint other than his own. Often times, his connections between Nietzsche and Chuang-Zu are huge stretches. I would not recommend taking his late modern class back to back with the Eastern class. I wanted to kill myself every tuesday and thursday between 11:30 and 2:30
How do you describe a Taoist?
Prof Shang was impossible to understand. His "lectures" consisted of him writing random words on the board, drawing arrows from one to another, and mumbling. He would start a sentence...trail off...laugh to himself...then switch topics. Thank the lord all the grades were based off the textbook, so a good grade isn't too hard to get. Avoid him.
Actually considered dropping. Geling does not speak English very well, and he often pauses in the middle of sentences and goes off on something else. Never ever lets you out early of a 6-9. His lectures are pointless, but attendance is mandatory. I would not recommend him. Gives inconsistent grades without explanation.
prof.shang is not clear at all in his lectures, the class is extremely boring and it does not do philosophy any justice, he doesnt grade consistantly. you get weekly quizzes, 3 papers and a midterm & final. if you show up for class and do good on your assignments you'll do fine, but i dont recommend him, its a drag for 3 hours on a monday
Professor Shang is very smart, but the class was full of a bunch of whiney, unintelligent people. If you don't mind actually thinking sometimes you will do fine in the class. Lectures are kind of boring, but he has an intersing life story and perspective on things. I recommend the class but not the idiots who came with it.
Extremely hard to understand him. Hes classes are very very boring, he shows all notes on the bored, in very weird ways, do not take his class unless you are ready for a lot of work. Difficult.
Very not boring!!! Lots of knowledge! Lots of fun! makes balloon animals with his mind! Smokes in class - yeah he's a rebelious type. truly, a blessing upon us all.
Quiet and lectures sometimes boring. He is very knowledgable on the field and a fun guy. Very easy going.
Shang is one of the best professors I've ever had! He's such a sweet guy. He has an amazing background and story. I know some of his lectures are hard to follow, but the more you participate in the class, the better! He's more than willing to help and is SUCH a passionate caring person!
Means well, but does not know how to teach. A colossal waste of time. Avoid!
I had a difficult time trying to stay awake in this class. He is a very nice guy but struggles with teaching. He doesnt know some of the material so asking for help is useless. Theres a group presentation where you have to lead a class discussion on a chapter. For exams he gives a list of terms and you have to write a page for each.
AVOID! He barely speaks English and had a teacher assistant who taught better than him. When he writes notes on the board, if that what you want to call it, you can barely understand them. Papers and quizzes are difficult and rely solely on the book not from his teaching. Do not take his class.
He is very nice and helpful when it comes to your grade. He will do what he can to help you better your grade. His exams are annoying and stressful but he really does know what he is talking about. If you have him don't freak out, his accent isn't bad and if you give any effort you will pass.
AWESOE PROFESSOR, TEST NOT TOO HARD IF YOU READ MATERIAL. ENCOURAGE GROUP ATMOSPHERE IN CLASS. IF CLASS ACTUALLY PARTICIPATES IN DISCUSSION HE DROPS LAST PAPER OF SEMESTER.
He is an amazing professor! Really knows what he is talking about. I would recommend him for this class he wants everyone to understand and do well. He can be really funny sometimes just overall GREAT professor.
He is a very nice guy and knows what he's talking about yet it's hard to understand/ comprehend what he's talking about since his english isn't so good. All you do is read the book (every chapter) and do take home quizzes and a couple book reports. Pretty easy.
Nice guy who is hard to understand. tests and papers are not very difficult. Focus on book and not his teachings and you will do fine in his class
Hard to understand. Very difficult tests and papers. Very hard grader.
Professor Shang expects a lot from his students but is very charming and nice. 3 book reports, take home quizzes, and a midterm and final. He does take attendance, but his lectures are merely supplemental. The meat of this class comes from the text. To do well you MUST read and take notes on each chapter prior to the lectures.
Easy to understand, I don't think his accent gets in the way at all. Very compromising when it comes to exams and projects. Missing the random quizzes will hurt your grade, so don't skip. Have to keep up with assigned readings to pass. A really good guy who loves what he does. Encourages group discussion, which makes class fun and interesting.
DO NOT RECOMMEND
please don't take his class, he doesn't make sense, test are hard, he's a hard grader, he isn't clear on what he wants from a paper, no power points, just lectures out of no where, talks about China a lot
Lectures are pretty boring, especially because he often doesn't lecture on what we're going to be tested on. Other days were really interesting with group discussions. If you read the book you'll be alright. He actually cares about the students and will help if you ask.
Almost every week you get a take home quiz that is open-book and due the following week, most of the questions are right in the book and if not he will give you the answer before you turn it in. You have one group project, 3 writing assignments, a midterm and a final... which were all fairly easy. He is sometimes hard to understand but a great guy.
He's a great guy and he'll really like you if you participate a lot. There's take home quizzes every week, but they are easy. There's 3 papers and one presentation but it isn't too bad, and a midterm and final. Lectures are pretty boring and he's kind of hard to understand. But overall, I would take this class again!
Difficult to understand during lecture, but students do group presentations that are very helpful. Take home quizzes and written tests.
A wise man, taught me many things about China.
Nice man, he has a heavy accent and spends his lecture times talking. It can be very boring, but if you attend all classes, do well on take home quizzes, and book reports and you will do fine in the class. There is also a group presentation.
Professor Shang is great. He starts off pretty awkward, but he is a really great guy. This course was very laid back. He's a little tough with grading book reports, but everything else is take home except for the exams. For the exams, he chooses 5-10 vocab words and you define them, super simple. Go to his office hours, he loves to help and chat.
He making talks about his life. Very interesting class but is super boring
Doesn't make any sense when he talks and pulls his lectures out of nowhere.
Shang is one of the best professors I have had. He's very caring for his students and makes them try their best in accomplishing well in class. Very helpful and understanding. Quite a funny guy and is easy to talk to. Teaches really interesting subjects related to philosophy and is fair in grading. Would recommend!
I love Prof. Shang! He is so caring about his students and is very knowledgeable about philosophy. He tends to ramble on during lectures but he has a lot of good information on the topics. He is available outside of classroom hours and offers extra credit. Definitely take him!
Shang is an incredible person inside and out and I left this class with so many life long lessons. I appreciate his genuine care about the students and willingness to help you in times of need. Although he is Chinese so it may be difficult to understand at times, but he laughs with us when he makes mistakes and makes us all feel comfortable.
I took Shang for my ethics class and he was great! Super funny and knows his stuff, but his notes are hard to follow so make sure to write as he talks. He also changes his lectures and homework to the student's desires and needs. Would definitely take again.
Horrible lectures. Doesn't make any sense.
Geling is a really good guy and his lectures offer a lot of knowledge beyond just the classroom. If you're just trying to get a degree and be gone don't take his class because his lectures are more for people who actually enjoy to learn more than just how to pass a test or write an A paper.
This is a nice professor. But you never know what is going to be on an exam, and his lectures have no structure. If you can thrive in a discussion based class, go ahead and take him. If your major is not philosophy, you're not going to like this class, and will be bored the whole time.
Honestly, my favorite professor ever. He will help you with whatever you need even if it isn't related to school. If you want to succeed then he will help pave the way. He values intelligence and the willingness to engage in an academic debate. I would highly recommend taking one of his classes if only to gain a valuable mentor its still worth it.
Don't take unless you absolutely need to. One of the worst prof's I've had. Just rambles for the whole class period, super unclear on his expectations, hard to understand what he says. Nice guy, but awful professor. Assigned a presentation on one of the three schools taught during the semester, the only instruction was "make it a party"
Don't listen to any of the negative reviews! Dr. Shang is THE BEST! Not only is he super caring, but he wants you to succeed! Please take him if you get the chance! The class is not bad at all, and if you put in the effort and talk to him about the assignments, you will definitely get a good grade. 100000% recommend!
Don't listen to the negative reviews! He can ramble a bit and may be a little unclear at times, but he's a great prof. The "party" people complain about is meant to be fun, a break from normal classwork. And he leaves the papers totally open so you can take them your own direction. Is fair with grading as long as you put in good effort.
He gives out a paper every few weeks for the whole semester. Time consuming, but he is a pretty easy grader. Meet with him one on one after class to ask about the requirements and he will grade easier. More pages better grade. He also hands out quizzes each week. They were take home quizzes so we could use the book. You can't skip class though.
I could hardly understand what he was saying or talking about during lectures it often felt like he was off topic and I did not learn much in this class. I had to teach myself everything outside of class. You wrote 3 papers and so multiple quizzes and 1 group project. The midterm and final are all handwritten.
Professor Shang is an amazing person and a great prof if you get to know him. If you have no interest in philosophy you'll probably want to die during this class. If you have an interest though, he'll recognize it and support you. Two exams that are really hard and require A LOT of studying, papers are fine if you make them your own.
We are expected to read chapters weekly from a confusing textbook, which is fine, but in class, his lectures make no sense and have little to no relevance about important topics from the chapter. Class tried to discuss other issues (including the lecture problem) such as not a clear syllabus and he brushed off saying that's not on him.
HE IS GOD OF PHILOSOPHY DO NOT LISTEN TO HERETICS AS THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO COMPREHEND HIS GREATNESS
He is a very caring professor who wants to work with you and teach you what he knows. If you show up to class and participate once or twice youre good. You need to come to every class though because he hands out pop quizzes but luckily theyre take home quizzes. Go to his office hours once or twice and hell grade easier too.
Shang is bad
Geling cares a lot about his students and is very passionate about what he teaches. But, we don't really have lectures and he doesn't do notes. We read a chapter from the book each week and have to write a reflection, which is kind of hard because the book is very confusing. And thats the only source you are getting the class contents from.
Geling is a nice guy, but he's bad with online. I had him for a Tues/Thurs hybrid class, but on the first day he told us he doesn't understand Zoom, so we met once a week. Each week you write a reflection paper about the book, but he's not specific about what he wants to see. His office hours were only in-person, which made getting help difficult.
I enjoyed this class. He mostly left it up to us what we talked about in class. He also showed he cared about us and insrtuctions were clear.
Professor Shang was a very nice guy, his class was hard to take. Very little communication between students and him. I never really knew what we were learning exactly and his exams and quizzes were quite difficult. Not a hard class, but I didn't learn much during the semester.
Geling is an absolute sweetheart. He cares so much about each student. My biggest advice especially for COVID times is to go to the in person classes. He gave extra credit because I showed up. He is so smart-- you just have to get to know him.
He's a great professor and is a very nice grader. It's a lot of essays but if you like to write this is a great class. Overall, I immensely enjoyed this professor and Eastern Philosophy.
There is a lot of essays which are composed of reflections and book reports. Its basically an essay and reading each week, but if the course is online its straight forward and I found the class to be very enjoyable! He is a good guy and has good intentions.
I never once got a 100% on any of my papers, would only get up to 95%. Other students in the class had the same problem. Tough grader, lots of papers. Hes good at communicating, but if you want an A, you probably wont get it.
Good prof, really tough grader though
Professor Shang has about 6 quizzes throughout the semester and 2 big tests, midterm and a final. Both the midterm and final were 26 terms you had to remember but were only tested on 5 terms that you were told on test day and had to write paragraphs on each term. He doesn't respond to e-mails and instructions are not always clear. Big lectures.
Pretty decent class. Classes are mostly lectures but professor Shang will answer any questions anyone has if you are confused about something. Very tough grader, don't expect to get 100% on the book reports.
Professor Shang is an amazing person outside of the classroom, but I struggled so much in this class. He lectures every day and it's so unorganized and messy. What he writes on the board makes zero sense so I had to read the book and teach myself. SO many papers and tough grader. Not very many grades so do well in the beginning of the semester!!
This professor hated giving good grades to students for some reason. His explanations for why he graded the way he did made no sense at all.
lectures were always confusing and long rambling, his syllabus and work are unclear, and he fails you after a certain amount of absences even if you emailed him for an excuse he never checks. no structure at all, not very empathetic and he was a little sarcastic in class once. wouldn't recommend it unless you like chaos two days a week.
Not a good prof, lectures are confusing, midterms and finals are very confusing and are 40% of your grade. Suggest not taking this prof, many of my friends took phi 101, and they say it was an easy class, it's the opposite of this prof teaching style. Very strict on grading.
He is a super nice guy but I would suggest a different prof. He does not like to give good grades. I was a 4.0 student before this class. He purposefully gives poor grades at the beginning of the semester and slowly increases them as time goes on. He tries to give the perception that you are improving. He has no slides or lesson plans, just rambles
If you take this class, get ready to STUDY for exams. They will make or break your grade, that was my mistake. If you do well on exams you will be just fine. The papers/quizzes are nothing too crazy. Professor Shang is a nice guy that has an expansive background.
I wanted to give him a good rating so bad. He is nicest person I've ever met, he is helpful, kind, and he cares about his students. He is hilarious to listen to in class too. Sadly, his lectures are very confusing and all over the board and he makes it impossible to get an A. He grades book reports and exams strictly and his quizzes are confusing.
Read the textbook and take short notes and you'll be okay. Quizzes were open-book and he tells you to use your textbook for it. Midterm and finals were pretty much the format of his book reports. IDK if he fr counts attendance though. His lectures were really weird though and I never paid attention, but he does try to answer any questions you have.
If you pay attention during his lectures and ask questions the content is very digestible. He cares enough to explain. He is a very interesting very funny guy. I enjoyed his class.
He writes lecture material on the white board in cursive that is not easy to read.
He is a tough grader so watch out. I took this class online so this is all I have to offer
Engaging professor, but his grading can be tough. The lectures are informative, and using Unstuck AI alongside the textbook really helped with preparation.
Don't be scared away by other reviews. I'll admit his class does take effort but it's a very valuable course that truly helped me as a person. My biggest advice would be GO TO OFFICE HOURS even if you understand the coursework. He's much more lenient if he knows you and he will work with you to help you reach your goals.
