Barrett is a nice guy and he makes classes interesting. Exams are multiple choice format and if you study the notes and practice questions, you will do well. Barrett puts all class notes on the P-Drive incase you miss something.

He's great.He's so full of energy and intersting to listen to..The tests are easy.All you have to do is read class notes and go on site that goes along with the textbook, you don't actually have to read the book.

Awesome Prof, very nice, exams are intro-level so if you study you'll do well. Pay attention to the movies, get the notes off the Pdrive.

By far the easiest course I ever took!

This is the second course I have taken from Barrett, He is a great guy, he does not want you to do badly, he puts all his notes on the P drive even MP3's of the lecture in case you missed it. Go to class and study the notes and you will do fine.

A well rounded prof

Go to class, even if you are half concious, print off the P Drive notes he gives you, study a little and you have a fool proof way of getting a GOOD mark in the class! VERY easy :)

Gene is a fantastic guy, and an engaging professor. HOWEVER, he is so slack with marks you'll feel you've earned nothing. Those with an interest in Soc as a discipline aren't going to like the fact that he contributes to the 'soc is easy' stereotype.

Not a horrible prof, but not the best.he is better than most, but if you dont like reading and learning everything on your own, then try to take someone else. all his classes are , are read a chap. , have a power pnt. on the chap. etc etc

Three multiple choice tests make up your mark.(no final!!)You get 100 MC questions,and get to pick which 66 you want to do.He's a sweet guy, and makes the material very clear. Easy class,not too much reading, I'd recommend it, its an easy A.

Dr. Barrett managed to teach me something new almost every lecture. Just because I didn't have to slave for an A doesn't make him a bad prof. The way he's able to teach his students in such a relaxed manner and still have the majority of his class do well says a lot about the way he teaches.

Prof. Barrett, explains anything that may be confusing, and he is able to make all his lectures interesting.

Barrett was a great prof, as long as you read the book and go to the lectures you'll do fine. He's always really upbeat and friendly. If you're taking Soc 210, you should choose this guy.

Awsome Prof, I actually went psycho trying to get into his Soc 211 class. Such a wonderful guy. He's funny and made Soc interesting for me. I had no desire to take it originally and now it may be my major. His course is a must take one!

One of the best Profs at SMU, I had a 3hr a wk class with him and never knew when the time was up. This is what I call teaching, quite knowledgeable and passionate about his teaching. Does all those funny moves in class that make you laugh. Really nice man.

Great teaching style, and teacher. "Those who like him like him alot" :) If you dont like speaking to others or are antisocial, or are shy, this class might be the style your looking for.

This class is great. There is alot of freedom, it's fun and lots of real life examples and experiences. I highly recommend any of Barrett's classes.

Dr. Barret is one of the best SOC profs at SMU his class is set up much differently than most and this is what makes him so great. You end up learning without feeling like you've worked your ass off. He has an amazing sense of humor and he's a great teacher. Take any of his classes.

Barrett is an amazing prof, I enjoyed his classes so much. Despite the fact that one of them was at 8:30am, I never missed his classes. Good sense of humor, interesting perspective on topics, and the fact that the notes were posted on the P: drive was exceptionally helpful.

it was a good class just make sure that you go to every class and the exams are a bit tricky so read the book and the lecture notes and you should be fine

Barrett is humorous, enthusiastic and precise. It is very clear that he enjoys what he is teaching. He's done some travelling and his slides often include interesting photographs. Summaries of lectures are available on P: drive. Exams, of which there are three, are multiple choice. Do your readings and listen in class and success will be yours.

Barret is a hard prof but thats what university is about! if you study for his tests like hes asks u to then u wont do bad. it works considering im making A's on his exams

Love this guy, never thought I'd like Sociology but he's so great, i don't know how he keeps me awake and interested at 8:30 in the morning, but he manages it. I recommend taking any class you can with this guy.

Not a bad intro class. He really knows his stuff and teaches about things he has done and places he has been. His exams are a little on the tougher side, but he doesn't give assignments, and he can be pretty funny at times.

Great teacher seems kinda cranky sometimes. But explains things well. Read over his notes and the text book you'll do fine on his 3 exams they are 50% from tect 50% from lectures. Easy enough. I liked going to class even though I dislike soc.

Barrett's an awesome prof...his tests really aren't that hard, 100 multiple choice and you only have to pick 66 to answer. If you study at all, you'll get a good mark in this class.

Pretty good prof, with only 3 exams and a reasonable amount of reading. You definitly have to study for the exams and sometimes his lectures can get a bit boring but overall I would recommend this class!

I loved this class and the prof taught it so well! He kept it interesting by using lots of videos and pictures as well as the readings, so the material was not as dry as it could have been. The tests are very fair as well.

Has many videos in the class.Some lectures were more interesting then others.He provides lots of notes on the p.drive. Tests are fairly easy, but only if you study for them.

A good prof,EECELLENT P drive notes! Also voice records his lectures and puts them on P drive so if you miss class no biggie! Lots of videos/case stuides do not miss those! Exams are semi-difficult. I got a final mark of B and I didn't study alot. STUDY STUDY STUDY HIS NOTES AND REMEMBER HIS POINTS OF VIEW!! on Exam he asks about his own theorys!

I loved Barrett! I found his classes were very interesting, but class involves a lot of work, especially reading. After his tests you are always left with a distinct feeling that you forgot to read something, even if you read everything....Great guy, hilarious, good teacher. Highly recommended.

A very pleasant and interesting man. He'd dance around the classroom when he got excited about a major point he was telling. He knew his material. He wanted the students to ask questions. He kept me interested at 8:30 am, and that is a big challenge for anyone!

He kicked ass. He is the classic example of what a prof should be. NO assignments, just 3 exams. His lectures are thorough and he has the best online notes than anyother prof I've had. Challenging class but not overwhelming. Easy A if you want it enough.

Barret is an excellent prof,fun energetic and uses humor to keep us interested. Course includes lots of interesting case studies and movies. Exams are multiple choice, and if you paid any attention in class, you can get an A for sure. Pop quizzes ( that only affect your mark if you do better on them than one of the exams) let you know how you stand

I love this prof! Gene Barrett is awesome. He's so cute and lively when he lectures and stomps when he makes a point. What a character. Exam as multiple choice and are fairly based on lectures and readings. Pay attention, do the readings and success will be thine!

This guy is great. He makes awesome jokes, uses case studies and movies, is very fair and not too harsh. As long as you go to class and at least glance at notes and readings you should do great. Anyone who gets as excited about his course and incorporates Napolean Dynamite has got to be a great prof.

You will only need to copy down less than 10 words in his lectures. Where, When is the Exam. Yup thats it. Because in his class, you can remember alot of things easily because he teaches in a very effective, and humous way. All 60 percent of the notes are in the PDrive, the rest are in a nice textbook.We also watched greatmovies like"WhyWeFight"

Very nice guy, can be a smart ass, but definately cool. You don't necessairly have to go to class because he posts all lectures on p-drive, but his classes are cool. Sexy for an old fella, (if you like that sort of thing). I would reccomend him for sure!

The setup is the same to his SOCI 1210 course. Great prof and class. You need to go to class to get notes but sometimes he posts his powerpoints to blackboard.

Really great prof. Hes very clear, uses slides but doesn't put them online until the end of the semester. Usually gives a day off after writing a test/exam. HATES cell phones in his class, don't use them! His course is really interesting. He really opened my eyes to a lot of things I never would have thought about before. Take him if you can!!

Great prof. You have to attend class because the slides are not put online. Also, you need to be quick at copying notes to get all the information down! But he is an awesome prof.

This class is an absolute joke. Easy A for anyone, as long as you go to class and take his notes which he does not post. 3 Exams worth 30,30,40%, no assignments or homework. Exams are 81 MCQ although you only need to do 70. Also gives you a clicker quiz option which will replace one of your exams (Which equals to be a free 100% on an exam)

Great prof lively and engaging. Exams are super easy and if you go to class and read the material you should do well. Exams are multiple choice and the answer is away very obvious. I would venture to say if your not a complete moron, you could get a passing mark in this class if you only showed up to every other class.

Loved this prof! The class was easy and not because the concepts are somewhat challenging but because he is so good at explaining... great lecturing, made the class really interesting. you HAVE to go to class, but if you do you will most likely get a pretty decent mark.

This is the second class I have taken with Barrett.. Favorite prof by far!!! It is essential that you go to class but the lectures are really interesting and you wont mind being there. his class is super interesting!! you have to go to every class to understand though because his slides are unclear and sometimes doesn't post them. he's funny and holds ur interest with the topics. the tests are easy just memorize all the slides. he tends to get a lot of questions about the pictures shown in class too so pay attention to that.

Very interesting class and professor. Teaches material related to the weekly readings, but also adds a lot to it, which is what makes his class so interesting. Exams are easy - all multiple choice. He does tend to ask some rather specific quesitons on things that he says though, so attendance and good note taking are a must. Take him if you can.

One of the best profs I've had at SMU. He's funny, engaging and always makes his point in a clear way. You have to go to class to do well, but it's well worth it to go. His exams aren't difficult and they're multiple choice with the option to give a short answer which is helpful for those who blank on multiple choice. Highly recommend this class.

Amazing prof, I was only taking sociology to get an arts credit. Didn't think this course would become my favourite, even first thing on a monday morning. Going to class and listening to Gene is a blast. The course isn't hard,just show up and do the readings. He's super laid back and chill!!

You've gotta love Gene! His lectures are engaging, interesting, and he makes an honest effort to drive the concepts home. Extremely clear. However, reading the textbook generally isn't necessary, maybe useful for an overview. Show up to class, copy his power-points, and you're golden to get an A. Plus, Multiple Choice exams (choose 70 out of 80)

Who doesn't love Gene Barrett? No projects, no assignments...this was definitely my kind of class. Subject matter was interesting, and Gene plays funky music before you enter the classroom. Intro Soc is a good time with Gene.

Love this guy. Tries to make class interesting so you actually go. Doesn't post powerpoints which is frustrating, but does post SOME. You don't need to go to class if you do the readings he assigns before each mid term. Though he does ask direct questions on exams asking what his personal opinion was on certain subjects

Come to class and learn the concepts he has on the outline at the beginning. 2 midterms and a final, all multiple choice. If you put in any effort you'll get a decent mark. Barrett is enthusiastic and teaches the content really well. Definitely recommend for first year sociology classes.

Very interesting prof - very engaged in his topics. Loves to get the class involved, which is awesome in a class of 100+. Doesn't post his lectures online so attendance is mandatory. BEST PROF. I've taken 4 classes with him in my four years and he is hands down one of my top 2. He cares about his students and makes everything fun so the students don't get bored. He is easy to talk to if you don't understand something. I'd highly recommend his classes, you won't be sorry!

Had this prof my entire first year! Super amazing, Really funny and great topics. Intro to Soc is a little dry, But Power Relations is awesome. If you attend everyday and write all of his notes the class should be a breeze! Never used the textbook and still passed. Highly recommend him for any first year, or anyone interested in Soc.

Hes an awesome prof but you have to attend class in order to do well. Also highly suggest taking the clicker quizzes that he offers can boost you grade immensely because the replace the lowest grade you got on the test. Overall GREAT classes I learned a lot :)

Best prof at SMU! Lectures are interesting, he's funny, you have to go to class, its best to take pictures of the slides and type them later as he goes fast. Definitely get the clicker it will boost your mark. Everything's multiple choice and he is real easy to talk to.
