I tried to express my concern with Mr. Shelton's test policy during class, and he created a scene and yelled at me starting with, listen missy! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!
Dr. Shelton is an OK guy. Those people who rated him badly probably got bad grades.
Professor Shelton is one of the most brilliant, informative, and funny teachers I have ever had! I have never been so anxious to go to class! To all of the naysayers: be nice, go to class, and STUDY! This class is TONS of fun!
unorganized class, focuses too much on race (african american teacher)-tells exactly whats on test in study session day before & posts on webct-makes tests easy but he is very very bad at teaching (get to watch friends & sex in the city in class though!)
I thought Dr. Shelton was a really cool guy! Going to the study sessions, he tells you exactly what's going to be on the test! It's so easy! He's super nice and is willing to help you when needed!
Mr. Shelton was a good teacher. As long as you go to class you'll do fine. Class is interesting and informative.
An awesome class! If you're looking to gain knowledge you'll definitely get that. If you're looking for an easy grade, you'll get that too. All I have to say is go to the study sessions and most of class and there's no way you can't get a B or better.
This man does not teach much material. Going to class is a waste of time. He at least has a cool personality
Prof. Shelton is HORRIBLE. He is the most **** man (against whites) I have ever met! If I wanted to focus on African American studies I would have taken one of those courses. Class time is a waste, If you wanna pass just go to the study session.
I have to agree with the person that wrote about the race issue. I never missed a class and it seems that the only thing he talked about was race. His tests were ridiculous!! I did get a decent grade though.
Nearly every topic discussed he twisted into a race issue. All too often he used the course as a personal platform for his own beliefs and complaints; plays favorites & rarely calls on others. Explanations unclear, guest speakers better than prof himself.
PROF SHELTON IS A VERY GOOD GUY. if you get to know him he will help you a great deal. the more effort you put in the more he will put in for you. go to the study sessions and go to class and you will do fine. make sure to thoroughly study the study guide
I hated this class. Not everyone should have the right to pass their stupidity on to others, being an African American student in his class, it was horrible the way he harped on the negative aspects of our race. This class was a huge waste of time.
the people who are posting against shelton on a basis of racism have deeper issues than this site can identify...the class briefly explores many interesting media forms and ideas. input=output in this class...benefit alot from goin to study sessions
i thought the class was interesting but sometimes it was boring, because the size of the class and the topics. i think he did a good job teaching it, even if the tests were hard. The notes and discussion had very little to do with the chapter readings.
lecture doesnt relate to book at all...very confusing as to where he gets the information from. class is a waste of time, go to study sessions and they tell you exactly what you need to study. he is a very very nice guy though. its is just the class
Not a hard class, but not easy. Its an LER so expect a big class. Attend class, take notes & pay attention to the films and you'll do fine. Those bringing race into this, like the other poster mentioned, has deeper issues then dislike for the class.
I have definatly had worse, but I didn't really like this guy. GREAT TOPICS yet he just brought race into the picture for everything we learned! Kinda stuck on himself as well, but there are much worse!!
Interesting class.
hated the class...and as others stated, he brought racial issues into his lectures waaaay too much. as far as LER's go, it's not that hard, as long as u take notes...

he is a good guy, if you need help just ask
Class was boring. Although Gene was a nice guy, the lectures were of no relevance to the material on tests. Notes did not help in anyway when preparing for tests and quizes. Brought racial issues into the lectures WAY too much.
One of my favorite classes. Race is a big part of media, and I finally had a class that acknowledged that. Especially being someone a part of an ethnicity that's painfully underrepresented in the media. He even helped me out on a Soc project.
he is a nice guy and can make the class fun even though it is at 9:15 in the morning, but he brings racial issues into the class too much sometimes making people feel uncomfortable. he has good reviews for the test which help out a lot.
he was sooooooo easy!
Always unprepared, late and lost. Spends countless minutes toying with his laptop while the class falls asleep.
Race issues became annoying after awhile. Class was easy because I read the book - you couldn't get an A without it. He was HORRIBLE with the CPS technology and shouldn't have used it. Easy A as long as you go to class. Quizzes are open note.
EW HATE HIM
Shelton's class was boring. I fell asleep many times. He gave bad notes and went way too fast all the time and he always had trouble with technology. The class isn't very hard as long as you read the book, use the study guides and go to study sessions.
Good teacher, easy class, just pay attention.
He wasted way too much time fuddling with his laptop, it drove me insane. Then the remote thing for attendance never worked, a complete waste of $12. The class was somewhat interesting and easy, but his wastes of time and money was too much.
Eck, he was a terrible teacher. He was great for one-on-one, but not during the lecture. I went and visited him, expressing my concern of my C grade, and I ended up with an A!
This guy is a real piece of work. Cancels his open note quiz policy 3 minutes before a quiz. Has a serious inferiority complex because he is black. Still thinks it's the 60's and everyone is out to get him. Will go on 10 minute tirades demanding the class show him "respect." Respect this, ****!
You might as well just call the class black history. Everything in this class relates back to the black race somehow, even if its completely off topic. He also likes to rage on the class even when nothing really happens. Retracts his open book/note policy 5 minutes before a quiz. Bad "teacher"
****. Called me a white devil and cracker several times when I expressed my distaste for his relating everything back to the "black struggle". If this was a white professor doing the opposite he would have been fired and never allowed to teach again.

Might as well be a segregated class because he has a HUGE grudge against whites. I liked the material in this class, but much of it was more black history, which is ok, but not why I took the class. He wasted MUCH of class time with the stupid clicker thing. His laptop never worked right either...
his lectures have nothing to do w/ what is on the test. try NOT to get him for this class.
Terrible... he chooses favorites then has conversation with them which nobody else can hear because there are over 400 ppl and then gets mad when other people start talking. Barely anybody gets A's on his tests, and he doesn't curve at all.
If you get him as your teacher, drop the class an try to pick up another one. Every one of his points seems to point back to the black struggle, and had me seriously doubting both his objeitveness and creditability. NOT A GOOD TEACHER
jarskin
At first I respected him. Now, I honestly don't. None of his notes were ever on the final. He changes his mind constantly, goes back on his word. My grade was above the 79.8% and should've been bosted, but he refused. I felt he didn't like me because I'm white, probably would if I was A.American
avoid him

i liked the class and did well, but his lectures had little to nothign to do with the exams or quizzes.. .. you have to read the entire book in order to get an A
very unorganized and boring, not eventful at all and monatoned....
Media Power Culture...not a good teacher...says he cares about the students and grades but he really doesnt...maybe if you're black he might...but overall bad experience and not a good GPA booster...try and take with another prof.
Extremely bias towards African Americans. Has no respect for students & doesn't try to help anyone. Notes have nothing to do w/tests or quizzes. You have to read the whole book to pass tests. Very unorganized!
worst professor ever. has major chip on his shoulder. everything relates to the black struggle in america. cancelled open note quiz policy 5 minutes before class on st. pats day (when most of the class was not sober) because he felt we had disrespected him. SWITCH OUT IF YOU HAVE HIM.
Hes a great professor. I really enjoyed his class and he went out of the way to help you do well as long as you obviously tried and were doing well.
He wasn't a very organized teacher. The class was somewhat interesting and he kept things moving along fast. The way he graded and would bump up your grade with his "GS" points seemed good but they turned out to be worth nothing. I went to anything out of class to get extra points and I should've been bumped up to an A but never was.
All this guy did was favor African Americans... i don't have a problem with that but, everything had something to do with Black Struggle, weather or not that was the topic.. AVOID
He's done some cool stuff in his lifetime, but that does not give one the excuse to be a crabby and entireley unhelpful, unreasonable person. Whether you go to class or not, you'll be punished for everyone elses attendace. HE CANNOT WORK TECHNOLOGY. You'll be there for the first 15 minutes, just sitting, while he figures out the stupid remote controls. Anyways, pick someone else if you have the option.

Terrible teacher. He is unclear and his tests are crazy hard. The questions are tricks almost no one gets an A on them. For the tests you pretty much have to know EVERY detail in current events as well as all of his notes and everything out of the book. He gives a study guide the day before the test. Lots of questions are from current events like knowing numbers and things. AVOID!
He is a bad teacher.
All u have to do is go to class and the review, Test are very tricky the way he words them, gotta be careful on that
AMAZING TEACHER... best class I have taken yet and it's not even my major... Tests were easy if you studied and quizzes open notes... I recommend Gene Shelton
He is very interesting. Usually never forgets a name. Gives many opportunities for extra credit. Knows his stuff
He is very rude. Tests are tricky and the class was very unorganized. I would not recommend him as a teacher
I thought he was a very smart, helpful teacher. The best way to get ahead in his class and on his good side is just to read the paper, know current events and volunteer the information when he asks. he has review sessions before each big test where he basically tells you exactly what he'll ask and the answers. sometimes his wording is tricky tho
Although he seems judgmental and a bit strict he was probably one of the most intelligent and interested teachers ive had. He has been in the real world of journalism and tries to show you how the media works by his own experiences. He is awesome.

His tests are really hard and they're tricky. He plays favorites with his students, and if you're not one of them, you're screwed. He's rude to his students and wastes a lot of class time so you end up having no idea what to study when it's test time. He's not very clear with assignments either.
He is not a ****, I never felt uncomfortable in his class. He just has a little different point of view. He has great experience in the field and you can learn a lot from him. The class is a little disorganized, and his test are tricky. But there are many extra credit chances and study sessions.
He knows a lot about the field and is a very interesting person. However he can be unclear with directions and his tests can be tricky. However, he give so much chance for extra credit that it helps even out your grade. I felt like I learned a lot from this class, even if it was just how to deal with professors
professor shelton knows about the material because he was super successful, however he is so technologically slow. he will spend like 20 minutes of the 50 minute class talking about stupid stuff and current events. i almost got a d in the class because oops he 'forgot' to put a 100 point assignment on my grade. this class would be so much easier if
I tell you this much, I like him a bazillion times better than I do Evonne Whitmore.
He's simultaneously a good and a bad teacher. A lot of the white kids get pissed watching a video about alcohol advertising in black communities when they could actually learn something from it. He gives the impression the class isn't his first priority, but you might learn something that'll make you a better human, with or without gene.
Go to class, get to know him. Take advantage of every ex-credit oppurtunity available. He has review sessions go to them because alot of info from the test and quizes are given. Show up to class on a regular basis and you will be fine. He's not as hard as everyone makes him out to be.
Okay Shelton is AWESOME! Definitely if you go to Kent, you need to take his class. He's great to know, funny, when he talks about jessica alba look out he's in love with her! And best part you get to see him when he was younger on a tv game show! Loved it!
Has had a lot of success, but was not a good teacher at all! His lecture on music which I was excited about was entirely about black history and music. Plays favorites with students. The class was confused about the assignments & unclear most of the time. Does give extra credit though. Tests are tricky. Can't avoid him if you are in JMC so good luck
Okay, so Prefessor Shelton is a nice guy and everything but he definitely plays favoritism with his students. If you don't have an A in his class, then he pretty much thinks you're the devil or something. Class was fun once in a while, but tests are tricky and his lectures aren't that great. But good luck.
Class can be interesting, he is a funny and nice guy but he tends to favor the african american students and culture. KNOW CURRENT EVENTS lots of test questions about whats in the news. gives bonus ?'s on tests :) tests come from notes AND book, quizes are open notes and book
I was interested in the class, until I actually attended. He is so focused on the race issue that we don't learn about fundamental aspects of the media. I often leave class angry, because he always discusses race. Our first test 390 people, not one A and it was because "we didn't know how to read the questions correctly" AVOID
He things he is god's gift to teaching. Very unprofessionally plays favorites and loves embarassing students.Stay away. And sit far in the back...its honestly better if he never knows your name.
Great teacher with great real life experience.
class was okay. tests tend to be tricky. very helpful to skim the book. you don't even have to go to class if you read the book and complete the study guide. boring, but an easy A if you study correctly.
He does focus on the race issue maybe a little too much..sends e-mail of the study guide to a test the NIGHT before..unorganized and tends to embarass students alot! Not one of my fav. professors at Kent. Doesn't put all of the terms on study guide for test so do not rely on the study guide. Doesn't respond to e-mails at all..
Absolutely the rudest teacher I have encountered. Puts down his students to no end in the most audacious ways. And although he is a mass communication professor, has no clue how to operate the equipment he is supposed to be using for the class. Totally astonishing. Should be fired. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!
Very rude and disrespectful of students. He is a little to proud of himself as well. He never answers emails and when you talk to him before or after class he blows you off if you aren't his favorite.
Straight up unless you're black, you won't be his favorite. he's really prejudice and all he talks about are his accomplishments. the tests are kinda hard, quizzes arent bad. there's some extra credit oppt. but its like presentations at like Franklin hall you have to go listen to so if you're lucky to not have class then you'll score some bonus.
This prof made me switch my major. Everyone suspects he is slightly **** and or ****, and you'll spend class periods watching clips of Gameshows he was on in the 70's. Plays favorites hardcore and is in no way approachable. Stay far away
Very pompous and disrespectful to students. Always late for study session. Study guides emailed late the night before the test! He rarely teaches the class. His title should be changed to scheduler. He schedules guest speakers to come in all the time. He consistently parallels the material to the african american community. I was very disappointed
One of the worst professors in the JMC department BY FAR. He honestly should not be teaching in a department that prides itself on technological advances and building the freedom of the press. He does not know anything about culture. That is apparent considering how awful he is to particular gender and race students in his classroom.
An ok teacher. Does play favorites, but not nearly as anti-white as other professors... he's pro-black, at a tolerable level. Make sure you get to know him & he likes you. Don't suck up, he picks up on it fast & then you're screwed. Go to the study sessions and review the study guide before tests - always. Then you're guaranteed an A. Easy class
made me hate journalism. switch out of his class immediately if you can.
never again.
Barley went to any classes because every other class was a guest speaker! All I did was read the book which helped me get a B+. DEFINTLEY go to the study sessions! Also thought he was anti-white and arrogant. The two things I remeber were that he was on a game show and that Soulja Boy was the #1 downlanded ringtone. TaLezia is awesome though!!
I sat up front, spoke in class, went to study sessions and to office hours--by the end of the semester he still never bothered to learn my name because I wasn't one of his favorites. He also routinely makes test Qs to TRICK you, not to test knowledge. I also got an anti-white vibe and thought he spoke very condescendingly to some students.
He will kill your GPA. He also made me hate Journalism; I am now an English major. I agree with most people on here, try to make sure he doesn't know you. If he does, and doesn't like you, he will humiliate you in class. This was the only class I ever walked out of.
WorstClassEver. Cocky. Awful TA's. Couldn't be bothered to spell-check a test. a JMC professor who can't use a computer. Videos were awful quality and totally outdated. Don't walk out on one though, or it will be the entierty of the next test. Best if you never go to class and only the review sessions. absolutely LOVED his screen saved, though.
I found him to be a very nice person, he only shows interest in students that show interest in their grade. So show interest, i did okay in the class but found his tests to be ridiculously hard and hard to comprehend. It was hard studying for the test also because we usually didnt get our study guides until late the night before
One of the finest professors I have had in 3 years. I had a lot of fun in his class. He would ask us everyday about "What's going on in the world." It was also on of the easiest A's I have ever managed to get. Go to his study sessions and you will get an A. Anyone who says otherwise is probably bitter because they didn't go to class and failed.
Interesting class. He only knew the black kids name in the class, and of course the kids who sucked up to him. He never sent study guides and picked favorites. He is arrogant and made me hate journalism. He is also lazy, never once talked about the book just brought in guest speakers.
GREAT professor! Loved the class. Seems to respect the people who participate in class more.. considering it's 150+ class it's understandable. Really has a lot to offer, definitely get to know him, great sense of humor.
He has a lot of experience in the real world. He is extremely unorganized, so make sure you keep track of your own grades and points, or he may get them wrong. But he does correct them if he is wrong. He also brings in a TON of guest speakers.
He seemed like he would be a great teacher, but after a while it was clear that he was useless. He's had a lot of experience, but he focused everything around african-americans. I wanted to learn about communication and I didn't. His tests were rediculous and he expected us to know things that were never mentioned anywhere. Avoid him!
Some days I hated him and some days I liked him. Definitely participate in class and keep up w/ grades, etc. on your own. Had some interesting stories, but overall I think he was a little outdated by technology of 2009. Also, got a strong anti-white vibe that made me completely shut off sometimes. Not horrible, but definitely not a favorite.
Awesome teacher, my mentor and a huge help to me. He really knows how to do business.
He's a very fun professor - when he's there. I hardly ever get to see him. He has assistants and guest speakers all the time (health issues I think). The tests are usually based off materials in the book, but if you need individual help, you'd have better luck with one of his assistants that himself.
Test are book and lecture driven. Quizzes u can use ur book and notes but tests u can not. Lots of guest lecturers. He will have questions on the tests/quizzes about their visits so pay attention. He also gives you 15 xtra credit points 4 going to different things around campus. Overall this is a cake class.
At first, the guy seemed really cool, but then he turned into a grumpy old man. His class has interesting topics, but you will never learn anything. His quizzes are easy, his tests are some of the hardest tests I have ever taken. You can study really hard, but don't expect an A.
Professor Shelton is one of the worst professors ever. He is very unhelpful and almost discourages you from asking questions. He does not respond to e-mails and when he does they are rude. He is not afraid make fun of people in class. He is comes across as anti-white.I encourage everyone to take this class elsewhere.
Didn't like him at all. He is rude and comes off very anti-white and makes fun of his students while in class. He doesn't answer questions or clarify anything he's said. He never answers emails either. Just be warned.
He was terrible. It was hard to determine what exactly would be on his tests. Quizzes were ok because they were open-note, though. He made fun of students for reasons unknown. It seemed as if he WANTED everyone in the course to fail. Don't take his class, if you can help it!
He seems a little crazy when you start off... And he is! Sometimes it's annoying, but other times it's funny. Overall as a person, I think he's mostly likable, but sometimes he is a little edgy and makes sarcastic comments instead of helping you.
If you're a communications student you'll have no choice but to take his Mass Comm. class. The class is quite easy because the quizzes are open note but Shelton is very sarcastic and grumpy. He won't help if you have questions. I'm glad it's over.
I love this guy! He's personable and keeps the class interesting. Quizzes are open note/book so as long as you show up for class and read the chapters you'll be fine. Tests are not hard if you study. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities and encourages students to get involved. He makes the class fun.
This guy plays favorites..be prepared. Suck up to him as soon as you can. He gave my friend, who's a favorite, fifteen points extra points for nothing. He is very unapproachable. Does NOT follow syllabus at all and is confusing. The tests aren't too bad, but he tricks you with one minute word. Go to study sessions or you'll do very poorly.
Horrible, just horrible. This professor makes sarcastic comments to students when questions are asked. He makes you look like an idiot all the time, by belittling you. He test are so confusing because you can study all week but when the test comes his question are so tricky so its hard to know which topics to study.
Quizzes are open-note. It's hard to know what to study for tests. (The study guide he gives doesn't help.) He usually tests more about African Americans in media than anything else. He tends to pick favorites. An easy enough class if you can guess what to study. I wasn't too fond of his teaching style, but some people really enjoyed it.
I liked this guy. His tests and quizzes are so easy if you just go to class every day. He loves talking about pop culture so speak up. He gives you extra credit if you say something he likes. The quizzes are open note/open book. Has study sessions the night before quizzes and tests.. plus e-mails you the exam study guide. No reason not to get an A
He plays favorites. The quizzes are easy because they are open book/open note but he is never clear on what will be on the tests. He brags about himself a lot when he should be teaching.
He is a bit stereotypical, and plays favorites. In our class all two girls talked once and he took away the whole classes bonus points. He uses backwards language on his tests and quizzes which is very confusing. He flies through the notes and doesn't give you a chance to write them down. Kiss his butt and you'll be alright though.
Eugene is a ra cist against white people. He is very rude to anyone who answers a question wrong, then complains when no one wants to answer a question. At study sessions he yelled at my class for not knowing anything. the reasons we didn't know anything is because he does not teach the material on the test in class. I expected an A in this class.
He answers questions vaguely, then gets angry when you ask him to clarify. I missed one class and emailed him asking a question pertaining to an assignment and he typed a paragraph-long rant about how I don't pay attention, rather than just answering my question in one sentence. He punishes entire class because of a few week students.
He is a terrible teacher! He basically tells you that you're a bad person for asking questions and then he answers vaguely like the last person said. It's like, if you don't want to answer our questions, EXPLAIN IT! It is that simple...
As long as you know your current events and talk about them when he asks, you'll be fine. That's the only time I ever spoke and he basically loved me. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS. He rarely talks about what is going to be on the test in class. Also, refrain from asking him questions. Just ask your friends. He'll make you feel stupid for not knowing.
Professor Shelton's current event discussions were fun and his study guides were useful. Important to pay attention in class.
Nice guy for the most part, but he can snap for seemingly no reason. He belittled someone in my class for asking about the test format. The race thing mentioned by others isn't a huge deal, but he does seem to bring it up a lot.
He gives a TON of extra credit... really saved my grade in the class. The material itself is not difficult at all. GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS bc he gives you answers to exams. I think he is a very rude guy... he calls people out a lot and gets irritated easily. not sure i would recommend him based on personality.
highly disrespectful.the only way i passed his class was with all of the extra credit offered. he went on rants about un-realted topics and then gave tests that no one knew answers to.. he has review sessions prior to open note quizzes and un-opened note tests but complains the whole time about being there and how you don't know any of the answers.
got an A, only because of extra credit and going to review sessions. belittles students and is disrespectful. dont ever ask him a question, he WILL make you look dumb for not knowing. racial talk is rediculous. Easy A but an unbearable class to go to
An amazing professor. He does make smart comments once every so often but it never bothers me. He's funny & does rant about topics but they are related to all the experiences he has had in the PR & Journalism field. Extra credit is a must and attending every study session is as well.If your majoring in PR or Journalism he needs to be your BESTFREIND
he was often rude to many of his students. (just saying things that were uncalled for in a classroom setting) If you studied the tests weren't too bad.
I took Media Power and Culture with him. He is an extremely nice professor who is just tired of not being listened too. He dislikes rude students who talk over him and will often yell to the class for it. As long as you aren't talking when he's talking he'll give away free extra credit. Great class.
Professor Shelton has TONS of experience and is extremely interesting. Unfortunately he goes off on tangents, and can be mean to students. His tests are also bizarre and without study sessions I would have failed. Its a pretty easy A, but the class over all is difficult because of his behavior.
Had him for Media, Power, and Culture. You NEED the book. He is very unapproachable, but super knowledgeable. Go to study sessions and take advantage of extra credit-they'll save your grade. He's not easy and often mean.
He's an interesting professor, and taking Mass Comm with him is not difficult. However, never ask him questions, and get used to his weird wording on tests. He definitely favors topics related to African Americans in media, so study that more than anything else, even in cases where it doesn't seem relevant or important.
Rude, rude, rude. Do not bother asking questions or raising concerns unless you want to be disrespected. I emailed him a simple question about my grade and got my head ripped off. He goes on random rants in class then tests you on things he has never talked about. I would NOT recommend taking any of his classes.
I had Shelton for Intro to Mass Comm. He was great! Really funny and really nice. If you talk to him regularly, he will be very helpful. He even let me use him as a reference when I was looking for a job in my field (photography). Just keep up on your assignments (the one big paper and reading the textbook) and you'll be golden!
Incredibly knowledgeable about the subject, but very unapproachable. Often is rude to students and talks down to them. Plays favorites. Tests aren't necessarily hard if you study and attend his study sessions.
I am attending his class right now. Professor Shelton is by far one of my FAVORITE professors. I look forward to his classes every week. He is not a hard professor and gives out xta credit like crazy. Make yourself known to him pay attention and sit in front of the class. Just pay attention He never makes fun if you don't know an answer
Some of my friends like him, I didn't. He picks out several students in the front row that he likes. Likes to talk about his life. Seems he's a bit biased against white men. Passionate but stiff. I was annoyed most of the time. Lots of slides, but the book helps. You will learn if you like the subject. Many opportunities for extra credit.
EXCELLENT TEACHER!!!! He is hard on you if you have potential but do not use it!Sit in the front and actually do your work and you will be fine. If someone doesn't like him it's because they slacked off. You have to work hard in this class.
He is one of the most impressive professors I have met at Kent State. He is very kind and extremely knowledgeable. If you are respectful, show up on time, participate and you don't use your phone in class you're good. And I mean he used to work with Michael Jackson, Rick James and many more like how cool is that?!
Great professor. His ego can get in the way, but he knows what he is talking about. If you need help, go to his office hours. It is absolutely mandatory that you attend class. If you participate and answer questions, you will get extra credit points. As long as you are on his good side, you will pass the class and get a lot out of it.
He would run off on tangents a lot and expects you to read the book for exams even though he doesn't discuss half the stuff in class. He's a decent professor, though, and a really interesting person. And my god, does he love food.
Prof. Shelton is a funny, well rounded man. He is very proud of his accomplishments, which he should be! Make sure to speak up during class, and always have a news story ready, he'll remember your name that way. Quizzes are open book, but look over your book. Test study sessions and a lot of extra credit opportunities, but he can take that away.
Worst experience of my life. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Shelton is a very highly-educated and experienced man. He will praise you when you do good and warns his students about reading the textbook before the tests. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities, so go to them, you'll need them. Go to his study sessions, he gives away 30+ answers out of 55 questions for the tests.
Worst experience. Would not recommend at all. Easy class, gives extra credit, but no.
I disliked this professor a lot, he didn't care to get to know most of the students and he takes 20 mins at least to start the lecture if we even get to it. But we still get tested on things we can't get to.
Shelton's really respected and for good reason, he knows what he's talking about. However, he often goes off on tangents during class and has to hurry through lectures and leaves a lot out. Reading the textbook and going to study sessions are essential to passing.
He's a very interesting professor but he can be little rude but overall very helpful. You must read to past the test however, quizzes are open book and note. Attendance isnt mandatory but i suggest you go he gives out extra credit periodically
This is a huge lecture class, I did not necessarily enjoy the class as a whole, nor did I hate it. I should have just taken it online.
Very easy class. Gives many chances for extra credit and study sessions before each test. Loved hearing what Professor Shelton had to teach us from his years of experience!
He talks about race a lot and black history. If it is not something you care about, then the class is a complete bore. He also talks about his life a lot. Tests are confusing with trick answers/questions. Bonus offered, but must attend an event. Study sessions offered the day before tests where he gives away answers, but usually when you have class
There's a good reason why this class fills up quick. Professor Shelton is great! He makes you enjoy every class. Attendance is "optional", but you'll never want to skip. Hands out extra credit like candy
He's a pretty cool guy but his lectures only cover half of what's on the test.
Such an interesting professor! Good classroom banter. Gives multiple extra credit chances. I would recommend him and wish he would write a book about his work with Motown, Michael Jackson, Prince, etc!
Great guy and Great teacher! quizzes are open-book, hosts study groups before every test. Encourages every student
Mr. Shelton is a cool prof. Really knows his stuff. Gives extra credit if you attend events and lectures held on campus. Allows open book open note quizzes and holds study sessions a day before tests. Be sure you keep up on reading because the study questions he asks are from the book and you WILL see his mad side if you have not been reading.
This man was the reason I decided not to be a Journalism major. His class was awful, & I should have just taken it online. Doesn't care about his students, & though I got a good grade, I would not give any of the credit of that grade to him. I read the book & became a good guesser (if you have taken his tests, you know what I mean). DO NOT TAKE HIM
Gene Shelton is a great professor if you ask him questions and try to get to know him. If you sit in the back and don't do your work you will probably hate this course. He is a great man who has had many great experiences in his life, and is very knowledgeable in this subject.
He is an inspirational old man who has been around the block a time or two. He really knows what he is talking about when it comes to the material. His lectures include a lot of stories (especially if he and his T/A can get PowerPoint to work), informative topics about the media, and some good humor. Would definitely take one of his classes again.
This was a great class. It is lecture heavy, but he keeps it interesting. He holds study sessions the day before a test and they are extremely helpful! He offers extra credit when you attend events on campus. He's a really funny guy with a lot of experience in PR/mass communication. I recommend taking his class!
Gene is the worst professor I have ever had at Kent State University. I couldn't tell you a single thing i learned in the class. His tests and quizzes are super easy, but he is always off topic. He literally lets kids fight in class about politics, and just laughs at it. Basically calls all white people a disgrace, and much much more.
First of all, ignore the haters. Prof. Shelton is the best, most personable professor Ive had at this university. Hes also easily the coolest (was Michael Jacksons publicist, knew Whitney Houston, etc) Professor in JMC. I took away so much from his course, and I encourage you to take Managing Media Diversity with you if you can.
While his class is extremely easy, you learn absolutely nothing of value. Gene is very funny towards those he likes, but ignores everyone else and looks down on white people. He yelled at my friend in front of the entire class just for smiling while he was speaking, and gets overly mad when people ask questions.
Honestly one of my favorite professors. Very understanding and lets you retake any exam you want. Offers study seasons and gives you all the answers to the exams so make sure you go! 10/10 recommend you will be glad you did. If you show up to office hours and if you are concerned with your grade he will practically change it then. Offers insane EC
Only four quizzes and four tests the whole semester. Study for study sessions and he will give you the answers word for word on the test for as many questions he think will give you a passing grade. All questions are t/f or multiple choice.
