I HATE this professor! He is mexican and has a really thick accent so it's hard to understand him.He always changes his mind about things and never tells us.I go to class everyday and get so frustrated! He thinks he knows everything and really knows nothing about the medical profession!Waste of time!
dont waste ur time! he changes his mind constantly and sometimes speaks in spanish. very strong accent. all he talks about is how great he was at UCLA. all you learn is when 2 apply 4 med school. only take if u want to be MD, nothing else. tests have NOTHING to do with the class. no notes
WOW! I go to class and even take notes, yet the tests have nothing to do with class. He teaches a pass/fail class, so if you fail...you are just plain dumb. Dr. Lopez may be very unclear, but he means well and is very helpful with any questions you may have, one of the few teachers who cares!
Very unorganized, changes events and due dates without informing the class. Hard to understand sometimes. However, the information is very useful, so sitting in on this class frequently and going to him for advising would be helpful. I wish that i would have done that instead of taking the class.
This teacher has no mercy for you whatsoever and I'm not lying. He graded this one paper and took off 25% of your grade for the category of the paper you messed up on. The tests have nothing to do with the lecture and instead everything's on statistics. Memorize every lecture for tests and u'll pass
Dr. Lopez is a great professor and really means well but tests are ridiculously hard, you have to memorize everthing from every lecture. He makes the tests like ones in med school he says, but it's a 1hr/pass/fail class, you really have to put a lot of effort in, I don't know if it was worth it.
Do not waste your time an take this class. It is not needed for professional school. teacher sucks
Had the worst time in this class. His tests came from nowhere and even if you go to class you get lost. Has a bad accent and is no help to people entering the medical field. Forget UCLA, you are here now so help us. Hopefully you don't get stuck with him.
The class is a S/U! Not that hard people! The class pack is very informative and Dr. Lopez really helped me beyond SLS 2311. The tests had me scratchin' my head...just pay close attention to specific #'s and things pointed out in class. Like Like b4 the class is a S/U, apply yourself & you'll be ok
Dr. Lopez wasn't very clear on assignments however the things I have learned in that class are invaluable...plus it's just a pass-fail course so it's really designed for people who want to learn a wealth of information about health professions.
the worst teacher on the planet. he read straight from the coursepack for almost every class and talked about his beloved students in los angeles. unless you want to write an autobiograpy on this man dont take the class just buy the coursepack.
Don't take this class under any circumstances. You don't need the stress it will cause you. WAY too much work for a one credit S/U. This guy is a complete tard, with an indecipherable accent and a bad attitude. Just don't do it.
This was such an easy class. It's S/U and you only need a 60% to pass. The tests questions are random, but you only need a 60%! I went to class everyday and listened, I never studied for the tests and passed the class without having to take the final or do the notebook. He is really nice too!
In theory the class was a good idea, but in reality it was executed poorly. Just reads the material you buy in the packet, waste of time and effort. You only needa 60% to pass, but his tests are that hard even if you do attend class. I was only interested in info on the Vet. Med., rest was a waste.
Loved this class! Very informative. You must go to class and take notes. I never studied for any of the tests and yet I passed the class well above the 60% margin. His accent is not that bad. You must listen and not talk when he is speaking because you will miss something important.
Nice Guy and Very helpful
I dont know why so many ppl. complained about him. He is very passionate about the students. Great if you're unsure about the proffesion you want or the application process.A lot of ppl just left in the middle of class and was just really rude!If you cant handle a class that all you need is a 60%, you probably dont belong in medical school anyways
Horrible class...he changed it this semester to a ABCDF system opposed to S/U...his tests are ridiculously stupid and hard...I wanted a better idea of what field i wanna go into; i didnt want to know USF's GPA or how many dentistry schools there are ( which was on his test).AVOID this class...it will lower ur GPA.
tests are WAY too detailed! you never know what grade you are going to get because he curves at the very end. 3 pop quizzes- very hard! you have to know numbers, years, and specific information from speakers(who are hard to hear)! I went to class everyday and took GOOD notes- still have a low C... it's tough
Awful excuse for a professor. He has the least important class and treats it like its more important than any others. His tests are on the most petty crap. If you want to be a physician, you have to know everything about dental and vet schools. This class is worthless. You buy a packet that consists of a web page- money in his pocket, of course
be prepared to study more for this class than ur biochemistry2 class. he treats this 2 credit class as if it is equivalent to a 4 credit science class. i wasted so much time studying for his stupid tests when i could have been studying for my histology class. do not take this class if you want an easy A. and im a 3rd year microbio student 3.7 gpa
He is not just a bad professor, but he is an awful person. He will not let you make up any assignments, even if your attendance is perfect, and you have a note from TWO MDs, including your BRAIN SURGEON!!! I'm 100% serious; he honestly did this to me. Makes you spend $30 to buy a "book" that is just a printed website. Never met a worse professor.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!...you have to memorize every little stupid detail..his tests are immpossible... it is a 2 credit hour class but he teaches it like a 4 credit hour class..can't leave early in class..he will call you out if you try to leave early or go to the bathroom or talking etc....drop it during add/drop week....DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!

this class is a joke if you are a transfer student. I know what i want to be. i see that it could be useful for those who don't know. you can tell what he like the most-medicine. All other careers he breezed by. The tests were extremely detailed. even ask on a quiz when were his office hours and where his office was located. easy class.
I dont know why everyone says Dr.Lopez is bad- i think he is great! his class is NOT hard and if you think it is hard you SHOULD NOT be in the medical field! His tests can be tricky if you dont study but that's kind of a given for any class! He has helped me out so much and really cares about his students! dont listen to otherpeople they just slack
He makes the tests really tricky, and all of the information can be confusing if you don't organize it really well. The class is definitely worth it if you are a pre-professional student that is unsure of what they want to do.
Straight up ridiculous. This class is supposed to help you, not hurt you. The information is helpful, yes, but the testing is without a doubt BOGUS. Course pack was not up-to-date, and some of the questions are worded too confusing; DO NOT expect this course to be a breeze, and don't skip, you'll miss the data that isn't in the material. BOGUS.
Not THAT bad of a class. Everyone freaks out because they do really bad on the first test, but all you have to do is memorize everything that he says. He gives an enormous curve at the end which should boost you at least a letter grade. Dont skip class and take good speaker notes. It's possible to get an A!
Many students started the semester wanting to be one kind of doctor and ended up changing their minds midway due to the information and speakers in Lopez's class. Point blank: their's a reason this class is mandatory for M&M majors. Its NOT HARD if you go to class, take notes on the speakers, and don't be late. He's a really nice guy too.
VERY DIFFICULT!But useful info. NOT an easy A!
Change your major to M&M (not pre-professional) and you won't have to take this. Interesting speakers, but takes the experience out of the whole thing when you have to memorize dates and a whole bunch of minor details instead of enjoying the class like it was meant to be. Needs to go back to S/U so there's no pressure on grades.
This class was awful!! He is so had to understand and his test and quiz questions are impossible! Seriously who needs to know howmany students a school takes a year, you can just look it up if you are really that interested. He makes getting into medschool sound like a nightmare and that we probably wont get in anyways. I changed my major afterwards
Impossible to understand. This class is two credits and I had to study three times as much for this class than I did for my four credit biology class. This class is a waste of money and time. He literally prints FAQ pages from school websites and other sources. I do not recommend this class nor Dr. Lopez to anyone.
This class is ridiculous. He only really cares about MDs and his tests are confusing and subjective. You cant even know your final grade b/c he puts this mysterious curve on the end. this class is definitely hurting most everyone i know--and please. I study HARD and im barely making a B.
if you don't have to take this class, don't!! dr. lopez is really nice but this is a 2 credit class and he takes it WAY too seriously!! struggling for a B. speakers are cool but you have to memorize every word they say & everything about them because it WILL be on the test.
This class was a horrible, catastrophic mistake. While Dr. Lopez is a fantastic advisor, he makes this class much more difficult than it should be. The coursepack is full of mostly useless info you need to know to pass. The speakers are great, but I'd enjoy them much more if I didn't have to memorize everything they said. Do NOT take this. Period.
Lopez has a lot of knowledge, but definitely teaches and grades this 2 credit class more than it really is. This class is now required for 08 catalog year and on so everyone just prepare yourself. Stay on top of the 3 tests and 2 quizzes that get accounted for as your grade and you'll do fine. Apparently there is a huge curve that the professor
this class is a GPA downer. you think it's going to be easy but it's so hard. he makes it harder than it would ever need to be. it was helpful if you're going into the med field but just buy the packet & don't take the class! you don't get rewarded for learning, you get B's & C's. if you take it don't miss a class everything is fair game for tests
Don't know why everyone thinks he's hard. Very informative. He focus a lot on the MD and DO profeesions, but still covers quite a few. Material for the tests was worthless, but it was obvious what was going to be on the test. If your an m&m major and think this class is hard you're in trouble.
This class was hard for me even though I'm a pretty much A/B student. He says that it's easy, but it really wasn't. I got mostly Cs and Ds on the tests and quizzes, but thankfully there's a curve so I ended with a B. My only suggestion is to review the material everyday. If I had done that, maybe I would have done better in this class.
One of the worst classes I've ever taken. Very boring. Tests and quizzes are useless. I think I got a d of f on everything yet managed to get a b in the class so whatever. The speakers are informative and interesting I must say, but the prof just goes over the same thing over and over again. So boring. You just memorize gpas and # of schools
This class is ridiculous and a waste of time and energy. He asks stupid questions, especially about speakers, so make sure to know b/g info about speakers like what college they attended.
Dr. Lopez is the most informative Pre-Professional adviser on campus. Taking this course as a Junior really cleared up any issues or questions I had with the admissions process. Those who say this class is difficult are not going to make it in medicine. Some questions are picky, but an A is definitely attainable.
I learned a ton in this class. I don't know why so many people are complaining about it. I didn't study for any of the test until an hour before and I received an A in the class. This class is a must for anyone who wants to go to medical school.
If you can't get a B in this class, you're not putting any effort in. I hardly studied for his exams and got Bs. I got As on his quizzes because they are on what you just covered in class. His questions are tricky, but general with it comes to GPAs. He really cares about his students and wants everyone to do good... hence the huge curve at the end.
Dr. Lopez is hilarious. His accent isn't hard to understand, and you will learn so much about applying to graduate school if you put work into it. He's very nice, and I agree, if you can't manage an 'A' in this class, you're gonna need to step it up, because you won't survive your upper division courses. Not hard, not TOO boring, much memorization.
They grade all of the tests and quizes wrong, so go check your tests and quizes because they will be graded wrong. Class not bad, but the difference between an 88 and 96 on a test is pretty significant and annoying that they cannot just grade the test right in the first place
The class is informative, the tests are dumb. I have a more realistic view of schools for health professionals. If what the person below said was true, I suppose that explains a bit about the tests/grades...I never checked. There's supposed to be a sizable curve at the end, but I didn't see my grade change. Again, material is okay, tests are dumb.
I find Dr. Lopez to be very informative but the tests were difficult in the way they were formated. He does curve but it changes every class so don't rely on it. Read his coursepack and pay attention in class. Make sure to go to class as he gives pop quizzes.
class overall is easy, material is easy and the information is very helpful if you want to go to any type of grad school.. doesnt speak good english which make his tests a little hard to understand b/c he makes them
Love Dr.Lopez he's hilarious and is so entertaining. His tests are really difficult don't take this class too lightly. Definitely study the course pack and GO TO CLASS. because he makes changes in the course pack. Nice guy but his tests are pretty difficult.
Very difficult to understand. Annoying that he is the only proffesor that teaches a mandatory class for pre med majors. For the tests memorize everything about the florida schools: how many there are, where they are, if they use application services. Most of the material is fluff and only focus on the core material for the exams.
Nice and funny guy but very hard to understand and absolutely no organization to the class. He talked in circles and every lecture was identical to the last which made studying for tests nearly impossible. tests are difficult and it shouldn't be since this is an informational class. Does curve though
He is a bad professor. Doesn't help in class as he just send you to his student assistants. Also, he treats it like a core academic class. Don't Take Him!!
Dr. Lopez is a funny guy but this course is ridiculously HARD he makes it a lot more difficult than it should be. i don't recommend this class to anyone your GPA will drop that's for sure.
Does anyone know if the final is dropped? I missed the final and I'm praying it will drop, so I can get an A or B. Also, does he curve more than half a letter grade at the end?
He's a very nice professor but this class isn't necessary and it's taken way too seriously. Tests are much harder than they need to be. This class should be an easy A and it's not. The material isn't very interesting either, especially if you already know what field of medicine you want to be in.
The advisers say that this class is mandatory, but I don't think it is. I only recommend taking this class if you are a freshman or sophomore. The material that you are tested on isn't necessary to know, but learn it anyways. His accent gets easier to understand over time. Sit close to the front, he tells jokes. The guest speakers were interesting.
Got a 50 on the first test because i thought the class was going to be a joke. After realizing that you had to have every detail of his notes memorized (literally), I ended up with an A in the class. Lot of studying/memorizing but it's doable for any premed student...
tests are very detailed and thorough. three pop quizzes and four tests. He dropped the lowest quiz and test score. Final was not cumulative. But make sure to study the course pack and the lecture notes. If you want to get an A, you have to read the course pack THOROUGHLY and memorize what he tells you. It gets really annoying but you learn a lot
He is an amazing professor with insightful knowledge that will help you out for the rest of your life. The tests are very detailed so know the coursepack front to back, his class is very interesting and very helpful
Easy class if you just attend and take notes. Study like 1 hour before the test and you will be fine. Pop quizzes, easy to predict when they are though. He is a hilarious guy and he's a great advisor. People complaining about how hard this class is.. shouldn't be pre-med because this is cakewalk compared to the rest of undergrad and med school.
Attendance is not mandatory but necessary in order to do well. The class is harder than it needs to be since tests are based on his lectures, what speakers say and where they're from, and every detail in his book. I got an A since he drops lowest quiz and test and does a curve at the end. Nice guy; the class is manageable but harder than it should.
This class is harder than it should be. However, each and every speaker was interesting and the content of the class was helpful. His tests are detailed, so you must pay attention in class and attend every class. I ended up with an A, after taking detailed notes and reviewing for 30 minutes after each class.
This is by far the best professor you will ever take! He is extremely helpful and really cares about his students. You can tell he has such a kind heart and a passion for teaching. Take this class, you will love it!!!
Dr. Lopez is a very knowledgeable professor and knows all there is to know about the medical school application process and medical careers. He wants his students to leave with an understanding about what the medical field requires. This is a great class, and you learn a lot.
Terrible lectures that were all about him rambling. You have to memorize so much useless information and he does not help or clarify anything even if you ask during or after the lecture. Terrible professor.
Prof. Lopez's class is extremely difficult. He gives you a course pack that has around 200 pages that you have to memorize. Also, weekly guest speakers that you are tested on as well. During lecture he just rambles on and practically repeats himself every class. The guest speakers are interesting but this class is almost impossible to get an A or B
I took this class to be an easy A & it definitely wasn't. His lectures are long & boring & he repeats the same material over and over. His test are very unpredictable. It's so much material it's unclear what you are supposed to study for the exams. He makes the class way harder than it needs to be.
Hands down the most USELESS class you will ever take. Lectures are LONG and boring and he only focuses on majors he likes. You have to go to class because he likes to put random facts on the test. Should be an easy A but he makes the class a lot harder than it should be. Over all, avoid this class unless its holding you from graduating.
This class is so ridiculous. I thought it would be an easy A but its not. The lectures are long and boring. Just tells irrelevant stories. Don't go to class, do go to class, it doesn't matter. The tests are hard because he doesn't discuss anything in class that he claims he did on the test. Its not a core class, save yourself the stress.
This class isn't as hard as everyone is making it out to be. Memorize some numbers in the course pack, go to the lectures, and review the online quizzes. He takes his questions directly from all of those things and if you don't cram, then you'll make an easy A. His grading scale is also lenient, where you can still get an A- if you get an 87.
If you don't enjoy this class then don't be a doctor. He makes it so you don't have to buy a textbook and he gives you tons of info for the future. He brings in tons of speakers from each profession/schools. A lot of memorizing but doable. Make notecards from the quizzes because some of those will be on the exams. Only 3 exams so take it seriously.
He messed up grade book pretty bad confusing students on their true grade. Harder than needed to be. Stressful class
The information was great and you learn a lot about the different professions. My only problem was the grading issue and how messed up it was. It was surprising to see how much lower my grade dropped because he grades by points instead.
Dr. Lopez is very straightforward with his class and what is expected. This class is not difficult at all. There's 3 exams and a final and he drops one. He lets you retake the quizzes as many times as you want. My only complaint is sometimes the information is wrong/misleading but if you approach him he will fix it. Very nice and caring professor.
This class was super easy. He gives you three exams and if you do well on all three then you have the option of taking the final. He's very sweet and caring; gives good information to his students. The only criticism I have is that the class was a bit disorganized.
easy A. dr. lopez gives amazing advice and provides you with information needed in order to continue on in your career
Dr. Lopez is such a great and caring man. His lectures are a bit boring, but he is really trying to reach out to his students and guide them through undergraduate. Show up when there is a guest speaker and listen to his lectures; the course pack doesn't have all the test questions. 4 tests (lowest dropped) + 9ish quizzes.
The content in this class is easy, however, the lectures are long and not helpful, there are a lot of quizzes but they dont help your grade, the tests are about 80% of your grade so make sure to read the coursepack, don't rely on the quizzes! Some of the answers on the quizzes will be wrong on the tests! Overall, boring class.
Course is based on rambling, tangential lectures & a poorly organized and out-of-date coursepack posted online. He has several TA's who are the only source of communication from him. Need help/have questions? Good luck getting answers. Errors abound in quizzes and tests. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE - you can get this information from the internet!
Professor Lopez was one of my favorite professors this semester. He really does care about the success of his students. His accent is heavy; however, he doesn't get offended if you ask him to repeat anything. His tests are SUPER easy. If you are interested in pre-health I would recommend this class.
Make sure you attend class and take really good notes, he will add comments that are not specifically in the coursepack that will be on the test (some also conflict, so what he says trumps what is in the pack). Really great teacher and resource for a medical student. I definitely recommend him. There are also a lot of internship opportunities.
This is the worst professor at UCF. This class is disorganized and is difficult to follow. His accent is very heavy and its often very hard to understand him in class. His TAs were not helpful and the class is more difficult then it appears. The main issue with this course was the fact that his coursepack was outdated!
Nice guy but class is disorganized. I took this class summer of 2016 so there were 2 exams and 1 final which wasn't cumulative. You might get lucky and get some good guest speakers, we didn't have a lot though. Joke of a class.
Great class to take if you're interested in the med field. There are numerous guest speakers from a variety of fields that come in. Dr. Lopez himself has a low, monotone, and heavily accented voice but definitely knows what he's talking about. Sit toward the front of the room & pay attention to what he says bc not everything is in the coursepack.
The guest speakers were cool. Otherwise, it was a boring class. Hard to understand and unclear of what exactly will be on the test
Dr. Lopez's class was really helpful. It helped a lot with career choices. He is very helpful and I still visit him at office hours for advice. You do need to read for the class but if you do that and pay attention, you'll get a good grade.
Very boring class. Even with his microphone, you cannot hear/understand him. 2-3 quizzes given about once a month which are very easy. His test can get very tricky because the content is all very similar to each other so be careful with the wording and technicalities. Also, he contradicts the book (course pack) but then test you on it???
So disorganized. I can learn everything from this class from the internet in a matter of 30 minutes, while saving hundreds of dollars. No one hardly shows up to class because of how boring and repetitive it is.
My class had amazing TAs, so my review might be off from others. This class is basically memorization of the coursepack & lectures. GO TO CLASS!!! He emphasizes useful things in class that will be on exams, including corrections to the coursepack and quizzes. 3 exams+1 final, lowest exam that isn't the final was dropped. Seriously, go to class.
Dr. Lopez tells the class from the beginning that the way to get an A in the class is by showing up. Quizzes are online with an unlimited amount of retakes. He gives 3 tests(one drops)+ final. If your class is great on attendance he will make the final optional and just keep your 3 test grades. Tests aren't difficult but you have to pay attention.
