I had some trouble with some of the journal entries at the beginning of the class. But as the semester went along, the journal entries seemed to get a little easier. I thought the general atmosphere was fun.

watch out, her comp might be a film class. it's a good film/comp class, but if that's not your thing, be careful. that being said, she gives weak feedback on rough drafts and grades final drafts harder, she doesn't like to award anyone with A's, and out of 20 students i was one of the 6 left at the end of the class.

She gives alot of work, but is very helpful, will take the time out to help those who are willing to help themselves. Don't expect her to do YOUR work, but she is diffently awesome!

if you wanna learn how to think critically even outside this world, take her class..actually she's amazing..i don't see any problem with the way she teaches.she's not rude.she's just lenient and not hypocrite..very approachable hard class though but 100% learning..i like the way she criticize my paper..u can learn expanding your ideas..

O little Gen Gen, this class is alota fun and I find this I have become more intelligent after taking this class. It has given me much insight to life and what not! And yes you have to juggle a lot of things..but come on guys, you?re grown ups now. This is the real world, so grow up! And if you cant stand the heat in Downey's kitchen, then GET OUT!

we are not kids, high school students any more. College is the best place for us to learn and later on apply what we've gained. If you wannna think inside and outside the box, that can be a great idea.."Mind is like a parachute, it only functions when it's open...Genesis is now our instrument..hey folks..wake up..!!!

I would highly recommend her....I do have 5 classes..had a hard time to manage them but got an A.she's a challenge to me inspite of all bad comments against her. be determined, patient, and optimistic!!..she's an amazing professor..so hard but extremely challenging..A very high quality grader but so helpful....

Pop Culture was all about thinking "outside of the box". The class was very challenging and not very diverse even though the topics discussed were. She did give me a new perspective in my writing which I am thankful for. I'm sure it will help me in my academic career. She's not mean, but hard. If you take her, be prepared to work!

I took this class online. There is alot of work to be done for this class. It is difficult and time consuming. Would not recommend on a busy schedule.

Come on people, you're supposed to be adults in college, not whiney kids looking for easy grades! Gen is hard, but she will make you a better writer. Fun class, glad I got her!

Hard professor but very helpful. Responds to emails rather quickly and sticks to the syllabus. Lots of writing but thats an english class for you. Gives feedback on all essays and papers allowing you to receive better grades and see what she is expecting in your writing. I have learned a lot through her challenging class

My favorite teacher thus far and may be throughout my college career. Anyone who doesn't like to be challenged to be a better writer and do your best should not take her. If you find yourself to be a slacker in school don't take her. She is ultra helpful and whip smart. Ask questions and she will help you. I recommend 1000%

She is quite possible one of the greatest mind I have encountered so far in my lifetime. I took her for Comp 1 and Comp 2. You are in college and you need to be challenged. She forces you to think out of the box and helps in any way possible and a plus is she is funny. I am most likely going to take more classes by this professor.

Mrs. Downey is a hard teacher. You will earn your grade, it will not be handed to you. very helpful, emails you back fast, very understanding of situations that may arise. I recommend Mrs Downey if you are truly trying to obtain an understanding of how to properly write a college paper. Take if you like being challenged. I loved this class.

If I could go back to the beginning and do things differently, I can tell you one thing I would change right now. I wouldn't worry so much about the class. Rate my professor dot com is not a good place to get a good idea about what your teacher is going to be like. Mrs. Downey is not nearly as bad as that site makes it seem.

The class is intimidating at first, but once you get in the groove of things, it gets easier. As long as you are on time, in class when you have to be, and listen when she explains parts of the class, you should pass the class easily. Some people think it's funny to not have your assignments turned in or to be late, but this class means business.

Transparency Sure, i didn't come into class the first day expecting the bar to be raised so high, but I ALSO didn't expect the teacher to be so straightforward and goofy! If nothing else, Mrs. Downey is unique in that she takes the class seriously for our benefit while still leveling with students about how tough some of the work involved is.

She knows you are smarter than what you give yourself credit for. She really makes you think, and push your limits to challenge yourself, and I admire this. College isn't supposed to be easy folks. She is a tough grader though, and a little unclear on feedback. I still recommend her though!

This class was more hard-edged than I ever thought an English Class would be. Prof. Downey has a clear way she wants things done, and that makes it hard to really follow "creative flow". However, if I take another English Class I will be looking for her teaching, because that hard-edge pushed me to work on myself outside of class. Worth the work.

Professor Downey is tough, but she is also fair. She's not at all stuffy or mean. The assignments given are lengthy, but the resource material to help you is available in Black Board. Most things are done through BB. Coming to class is important to succeed. This is college comp, it's not high school anymore. You actually have to earn your grades.

Dr. Downey was a very good professor and very helpful. almost all assignments are on black board and is a very fair grader. classes are short, never expect to be there the full time. i highly recommend this teacher.

Unlike many other reviews, I thought Dr. Downey was a good teacher! She is down to Earth and understanding of your needs. She is a fair grader but has many essays. Luckily, the essays are not hard. I never opened my textbooks for this class. Material is clear.

Professor Downey is a very understanding teacher. She is willing to work with you if you have any problems, and will walk you through how to construct the papers. She is fun to listen to.

She is very kind and very understanding. She will make you think outside the box which is a very good thing if you are more right brain than you are left brain.

If you want an "easy" class, this isn't for you. If you actually want to learn and you're willing to work, this class is the best. All of the papers build on each other, which really helps. There is a lot of homework but it's a writing class.. that's kind of the point. She's very responsive and willing to help you out. I would take her class again!

Took the class online last semester and did not pass but took it in class this semester was awesome. She is a good teacher and her lectures are awesome. She does a lot of papers but they are mandatory for the school not for her. She tries to make the class funny and to me does a great job! Would definitely take her for other classes

Honestly, I'm horrible at english, I truly despise the subject, reading books take me along time, but this class really changed that for me. Papers are over film and television, and her input really helps the writing process. This is with out a doubt the best english teacher I have ever had, though it's best to take at school, don't take it online

She seems tough and super strict, but is quite understanding. The class was very fast paced, but still interesting. She likes themes, and if you catch her while in the film theme, you're in luck - it's awesome.

She is really understanding and she will take anything you have going on in your life under consideration. Dr. Downey does a great job of breaking things down for you in class so that you will understand it more. There is no doubt in my mind that she is great professor and I am honored to have had her as my Comp II teacher.

Lots of class time to work on essays. She actually explains what you're doing wrong. In class is definitely easier in class compared to online. She makes it interesting by using films for essay topics. Super caring and cool!

It's an easy A as long as you come, do the small assignments and do the papers required. She gives you plenty of time to complete them and it seems overwhelming at first but it's not. I hate writing and this was my favorite class!! She's sweet, real cool teacher!

While she is a little rough around the edges she is one of the best teachers I have had for an English class. She grades on the easier side, and gives very good feedback on what you do wrong and how to fix them. She likes to make jokes and she can come off as rude, but she really is not at all. 100% loved this class. Everything is based on film.

She's s actually a great teacher and very funny. Shes kind of a tough grader but she helps you as much as possible before grading you. I would definitely take her again.

She warns that there will be a lot of work, but it goes day by day. She basically lays everything out to ensure if you put in a good amount of work and stay focused you will pass.

This is the 3rd class I have taken of Dr. Downey, I have taken both her composition classes and pursued this class next. This class is really fascinating and while she wont be teaching the spring semester shes still a great teacher for the course. She really cares about pop culture and participation. Discussion boards were fun as well.

Downey was an awesome teacher. She really takes the class to the next level. She defiantly challenges you and makes you think. Shes tough, but she has a purpose! Everyone loves movies, so suck it up and make the best of it.

It was hard work, but she gave great feedback. Just show up to class and don't freak out when you get an assignment.

This class focused on movies, it sounds easy but its more than just watching movies, makes you think more. Syllabus was color coordinated which helps keep track of the ton of assignments so if you dont know something was due, thats your own fault. Very helpful if circumstances come up, just be vocal. Dont try to put off the work, builds up.

She's a very tough grader, but I learned lot from her. She gives good feedback on essays, which is especially useful on rough drafts. Discussion board posts can be a lot some weeks, but they're manageable. Definitely don't procrastinate until the last minute. You'll need to dedicate a lot of time and effort in order to earn a good grade.

Dr. Downey is a very good professor with the aspect that she wants her students to succeed and better learn how to write essays. She is tough, but that helps better our work. Hopefully can take her next year for comp 2.

I had a chance to take her class fall of 2017. She is very passionate about pop culture. Her class is not easy by any means and thats not a bad thing. However she really wants you to immerse yourself into the material. She loves movies, she loves engaging and wanting you to work with a topic that interests you. Easy to contact out of class & email.

She is a great teacher. Has messy hand writting but tells you what you need to fix on an essay. But tough on grading if you don't fix what she told you.

Super nice, able to reach easily, still helpful even after you've already asked the same thing 20 times! Understanding if you have to miss class because of weather or car troubles, and might give candy bribes. :D She doesn't mess around when it comes to the actual content of a paper, it has to be good which i like. Would take her class again! :)

I love Professor Downey, she's quirky and different from other teachers. I also had her for Eng111, and loved that the writing assignment revolve around film and popculture. She's a huge horror and fantasy buff which we have in common. She has a pretty set teaching style and once you know what is expected the work is possible. Approachably cool!

Dr. Downey is truly a wonderful professor. At first, she seems very intense. But if you participate and do your work it'll be the best college course you can take at OCC! I highly recommend her! DO NOT buy the book (she provides ample resources so you'll just be wasting your money). Always attend class because there is always important info! Enjoy!

I'd say she was a very good professor. She hands out a lot of work but she doesn't just leave you to die lol. She gives feedback that actually helps and is hilarious and relatable. As long as you communicate with her you will do just fine!!

Professor Downey is a very involved teacher. She is very clear on how she will be grading and is incredible at assisting along the way. There is a lot of essays in this course, but plenty of time to complete each. Students peer-review and meet with Downey before the final draft. The class pushes students to expand their writing abilities.

After a few weeks in this class I can say that the overall topic subject made it more fun, and interesting to work with then regular English classes. The idea of using other parts of literature, like film and the usage of modern technology sources like Netflix, and so forth helped peak interest and motivation for this class.

This professor is very lovely. Her workload isnt very overwhelming and she is always willing to help. Shes super funny and keeps her lectures lively ... even on Saturday morning. I appreciate her kindness lots. She is approachable and hasnt belittled me even when I ask .. well .. stupid questions. I adore her.

BE ON TIME (PERIOD) She will provide critical details for assignments at the start of class. IF you miss two or more classes in a row i think you would pull your hair out. Attendence is very important and being on time is absolutely mandatory to pass her class to be well informed on assignment instructions. She makes time for you if she has it.

One of the best professors Ive had so far, basically there is a lot of work but a fair outcome grade, strict but fair

She was an amazing teacher who truly works with you so long as you keep her in the loop. The subject itself is tough and quite confusing, but she tries her best to make it as comprehensible as possible within her lectures. Ask her questions. She wants you to. PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS! SERIOUSLY! Don't let yourself stay confused! She won't be annoyed!

Professor Downey is a rockstar. Although it was all online, I felt her energy through all her GIFs and zoom calls. I was dreading taking another English course, but she made it so fun! I loved how it was based on film and not the same old research topics. I worked hard for the A and met with her each Sunday night to ask questions. Everypointcounts!

Excellent teacher! If you follow along through class she makes it impossible to fail. Her classes are as hard as you make them. If you procrastinate and dont do your work the class will be terrible. 10/10 would recommend

You'll do fine in this class if you attend every class meeting. I had her over the summer (4 hour class) since it was ENG111P - it was more of a faster speed but she gave everyone good feedback for the rough drafts so you can make it better for the final draft. FYI: she sure loves horror movies

Amazing instructor. Great learning structure and very helpful. Answers questions no matter how small or big they are she will take the time out to help understand to progress further in the course. Gets the class involved with letting the student decide on what subtopics under a general broad topic to write about.

Professor Genesis was very helpful and understanding. there is a lot of essay throughout the course that are mainly film based. overall great Professor !

I had Genesis for both ENG 111P and ENG 112 which is to say I really enjoyed her class. If you are going to take her comp classes, for your own sake, please show up. The structure is really great but only if you show up and keep up! I really recommend her comp classes. Writing about film makes writing papers far more interesting!

Professor Genesis' class is engaging but requires commitment. The film-based essays are interesting, and using unstuck study for prep helps. Just be sure to attend class regularly for the best experience.

She was very helpful and always willing to work with you and response really fast to emails. She can be bluntly honest but i respect the honesty.

I really like Gen, I took both of my comps with her for my CCP credits. So, I go to high school and come to her class after. She did not grade harshly and as long as you go to class there should be no issues.
