I would not recomend this teacher to anyone!! Not if you want to get a good grade that is. Her tests are just crazy and the lectures are not very interisting. If you want a good experience with Bio then DO NOT take a class with this teacher!!
VERY challenging. Yes, lectures can be boring, but the subject itself is bland. Mandatory attendance. She is a very nice and at times funny woman, but study your butt off if you want to pass. She does answer any Q's you have and offers a good amount of extra credit. If you're strong in Biology, take her.
She is very helpful in office hours. She does give difficult tests but If you pay attention and use all your resources you'll do ok. She gives many extra credit opportunities which are great. All notes are power points and she will let you print them out which is very very helpful. Explains things well and cares about her students.
Prof DeMars is a rare teacher who truly takes interest in students. She answers any questions u have, and goes out of her way to find the answer otherwise. If u are taking biol merely b/c it is mandatory, and have no interest, don't take DeMars. If you are pursuing a career based on biol, take DeMars, she'll give u the best foundation u can get
Mrs.DeMars is the nicest most awesomest teacher you will ever meet. She is always willing to help no matter what. She gives extra credit all the time (so do it). And class is pretty easy if you study and put the time in.The test are pretty easy to me b/c they coem from the lecuture and powerpoints. And the bad remarks on here are so very untrue,OJK.
soo hard. she knows and loves biology so much that you MUST study and come to class all the time. Test a super hard, quizzes are super hard, but the homework is ok...i guess. if you aren't into biology then she is not the teacher for you!
DeMars was a really great teacher for me. I'm a biochemistry major and she is a biochemist, so I'm a little partial. She was really helpful and her powerpoints are great! Definitely study those and you'll get an A Also, work hard in labs and ask questions and she'll remember and like you. The final was optional when I took her if you came everyday.
she is very much into biology and really knows her stuff. but if you don't devote at least 2-3 hours of good studying every night you will fail. fast paced class and is hard to keep up.
LOVED HER! It's a hard class but she makes biology very interesting. Work hard and study and getting an A is possible. I had to work my butt off to get my A. I plan on taking her again this summer for micro. TAKE HER
She isn't easy, but if you take her you will have the best foundation for cell biology. If you study, go to class, and read the book you will be fine. I made an A but I put a lot of effort into it. 5 exams, 4 homeworks, 4 projects, and iClicker quizzes.
This class was the toughest one of the semester. You have no idea what will be on the tests, yes powerpoints are available but they cover ALOT of material and everything just seems overwhelming. Attendance was mandatory and you need to be alert every class because of her i<clicker questions. To succed in this class you will have to study ALOT.
Dr. Demars was what I would say one of the best professors I've ever had. She's hard, she demands a lot out of you, but very explicative, and clear about her expectations. Very helpful, fun, she's pretty much like a ray of light- NO COMPLAINTS.
Lectures every class. Uses i-clicker a lot. Puts all powerpoints online. Very helpful. Attend class. Nice.
I LOVED Professor Demars. She single-hand made me interested in the study of biology when I was never interested in it before. I also made an A, when I thought I would make an F. She is highly helpful, great in spirit, and truly a joy as a professor.
Dr. DeMars is a FANTASTIC teacher! She is always willing to help in office hours and after class. I have taken her twice because she really knows her stuff. She makes you work hard but if you listen in class you will NEVER forget what she teaches! :)
Great teacher! Had her for lab. Gives her own worksheets rather than just from the book that MAKE SURE you learn/know whats going on along with the lab book experiment. The only professor there that realizes its a beginner Bio class. Ask her questions and she will give you real answers,if you show you are trying she is the nicest lady in the world.
Hands down favorite professor at AASU. Shes hard and her tests are hard.. but study and you will be fine. Mandatory attendance because of I-Clicker quizzes daily. LOVED having her as a professor. Wish she were available to teach more of my Biology Electives!
LOVE her! Tests are hard, but as long as you go to class and study, its not awful. Great teacher to have for 1107. Attendance is mandatory, but if you have perfect attendance, you get to drop your lowest test grade. Lectures are very involved (even in a large class).
She is really passionate about biology. She is really approachable and helpful. Her exams are really challenging and you must read the textbook in order to do well in her exams. I highly recommend her for anyone really interested in cell biology.
Good teacher. Will help you understand and is very understanding of personal situations like work and getting sick
Took her for honors. Hardest class of my life, but I definitely learned a lot. She's passionate about what she teaches, but you have to put the work in or you will fail. I wouldn't recommend this course if you have any other hard classes or a busy schedule.
EXTREMELY hard! She's a great teacher and knows what she's talking about, but if you aren't majoring in biology I wouldn't recommend. Very passionate about cellular bio so she leans more towards that aspect. Good Luck if you take her!
This class is interesting but extremely hard. The use of the iclicker is fun and there are daily quizzes. Exams are ridiculous! There is so much information to learn, and you must know it inside and out to get a decent grade. Good luck!
Dr. DeMars is an excellent professor. Very caring and she takes a personal interest o work hard. That being said she gives extremely hard tests. She does give you homework and quizzes to help with your grade.
EXTREMELY HARD!! Test are hard just make sure you know everything and then some. i-cicker quizzes almost everyday. Make sure you keep up with mastering micro assignments and reading. GOOD LUCK
Great professor, moderate workload, difficult tests but enough other grading opportunities to do well.
Dr. DeMars is an extremely AMAZING professor. "College is not supposed to be easy." -She does a great job of supporting that statement. She presents and lectures the information really really well. If you study hard, you will do great. I have learned to love biology because of her.
She's a VERY hard prof. Goes very quickly through the material and expects a LOT out of students. She's very fun and enthusiastic but it was hard to learn from her. Do the reading and homework!!
DeMars is super difficult. Majors, consider taking her but she is super vague with her grading. You never really know what answer she wants you to give. Be really detail-oriented, ask a bunch of questions when you don't understand and most importantly: WORK YOUR BUTT OFF ON POST LABS. If you're not a science major, don't waste your time in here
DeMars's lectures are very clear and organized, and they are usually interesting. Her tests are fairly straightforward, but the test's main focus isn't usually what you spent the most time learning, which is weird. Post-lab assignments and discussion points in lab are important. It was overall a good experience.
Dr. Demars can be very condescending and defensive. She seems border on tolerating her students. She encourages "big picture" but tests on small detail. She's clearly bright but isn't much of a people person. Good luck. She should stick with classes for majors.
The people below me are 100% correct. She definitely pushes her beliefs into the class. Don't take her for an easy A. I had to teach myself most of the material because I figured out most of what we discussed in class wouldn't be on the tests. Lets you drop your lowest test grade if you have perfect attendance. If you have her for lab... good luck.
If you can avoid taking this class with her, it is in your best interest to do so. She simply wants too much involvement in this class which should not be that difficult. Her notes are confusing, she assigns projects and HW, saying that it helps solidify the concepts (it doesn't). She lacks the fundamental basics in how to convey information.
DeMars is great if you reach out and do your work. You HAVE to be an active learner in the class room as well as during your studies. If you aren't a bioscience major, I would suggest taking an easier professor. If you are, I highly recommend her due to the fact that she forces you to be thorough and deeply understand her material.
Dr. Demars is a very good instructor. She has a great personality, and gives very clear lectures. Exams are multiple choice, and consist of very oddly worded questions--you will often find yourself tangled between two identical answer choices for most of the exam questions. Daily i-clicker quizzes, so dont miss class! Group projects graded easily.
Worst intro class ever! will help but makes you feel like an idiot for not understanding, test isn't even for notes we take, 5 exams are worth 70% of grade. avoid at all costs.
This was probably one of the hardest classes I've taken. She words the questions strangely and you're often split between two answers. There are clicker quizzes everyday so you need to attend class.
Previous reviews had me scared to take her, but she's not that bad. She's clear, only test on what we went over in class & the ppts. She's nice & will clarify whatever you need. I never used the book. 4 exams, CUMULATIVE final, daily quizzes, and weekly mastering HW. This is not an easy class, but she makes the info understandable. best for micro
Dr. Demars was an awesome professor! She wants you to learn the material, be able to critically think about it and apply it. I birthed a baby in the middle of the semester and managed to get a B. I am almost finished with my first semester of nursing school, and am so glad I was able to have Dr. Demars to prepare me for this semester.
HARD! She knows the material and cares about the topic. GET THE BOOK_SAME BOOK FOR NEXT BIOLOGY CLASS (bio 3000) She creates questions based on the reading. Daily reading quiz online due before class. Daily review quiz at the start of class, daily end of class quiz. The book: dull but good resource. Read the stuff in the margins! CUMULATIVE final!!
Dr. DeMars was great, I had her for lecture, lab, and first year seminar. She was always willing to help me and I thoroughly enjoyed all three classes that I had with her.
Awesome professor. Gives detailed lectures, but tries her best to make it interesting! I would recommend this class for those who need it for their major. If you are looking for a class you can slide by and get a B/C, this is not the one.
She truly is an awesome teacher and really cares about her students. Her tests are extremely hard though and are mostly short answer or essay! No multiple choice here! The tests are all about application. She really knows her stuff and makes sure you do too!
Have DeMars for 1107 lab and she is the BEST! You seriously have to make no effort at all to not make an A. Pay attention in class, understand your pre/post labs, and you will excel! She is so sweet, easy going! if you cant make a lab some weeks (for good reason)? she will be very understanding and fit u into another lab that week! Need lab manual
This class is very challenging, especially with a full course load. There are at home reading assignments everyday before class. There are quizzes every night before class and many quizzes in class. She knows the material, just doesn't make the greatest powerpoints. They are hard to follow and my notes become very confusing because of the ppts.
Dr. DeMars is incredibly knowledgeable in biology. You should know what you are getting into; this class will demand that you READ and actually study for her exams because they are NOT cake-walks. What's more difficult is that she doesn't drop the lowest test grades. Getting an A is contingent upon your performance on her 4 exams and the final.
Taking BIO 2400 is a challenge with Dr. DeMars. You must come to class prepared and be willing to go to supplement instruction. Tests are mostly application questions and you must understand all concepts to answer them correctly. I personally loved this class and got an A, but I also was always prepared for class and attended SI which was helpful.
The hardest class I had ever taken. She wants you to understand the basics in order to be successful in future sciences. There are h/w assignments every week, quizzes every morning, 4 exams, and a final. Take thorough notes during class and actually study them. They will benefit you on the exams which are about application, and on the quizzes.
She is a tough grader but she will take time out to make sure students understand the material. If you don't get it make sure you say so! The tests are hard, they are worded in a way so that no information is readily available that may help you on another question. If you know a concept but aren't 100% just write what you know for partial credit.
I loved Dr DeMars! She is tough but she is an excellent lecturer and her standards are clear. I took her in the 4-week condensed class and it was tough. Expect to spend 3-4 hours a night on material for the summer team. I ate slept and dreamt biology, but it was worth it in the end! Would take her again.
HARDEST class I've ever taken. Had her for Summer 16 in 4 weeks, expect to study for hours every night for this class. Quizzes every class, need book/access code. Great teacher, knows what she's talking about but a TOUGH grader. No curves. No extra credit. Tests are all free response 35 questions.
I took her for Cell Bio (not intro to cell) while she filled in for another prof. I can't reiterate how awful taking her class was. The lectures were fine, she used slides with lots of visuals (you must memorize all of them). Tons of Clicker quizzes, TONS of reading. Very hard tests with brutal grading. Minimum extra credit. AVOID TAKING HER!!!!!!
You'll learn a ton, but prepare to work hard for that A. Take advantage of her office hours; she will be more than happy to help you understand the material. The study habits you form by taking this class will prepare you for more advanced biology classes. A real gem of a teacher.
There is a lot of reading from the text along with a lot of quizzes. Make sure you read. HER TESTS ARE FAIR; however, they are hard because they're applications, so you must know the info very well. Despite the hard tests, they are only worth 40% of the final grade. I know students who have gotten C's on most of the test, and got a B overall.
There are readings and quizzes before every lectures. It is a lot of work, but it helps you stay on top of the materials. Tests are fair and from mostly lectures. Take good notes and make sure you understand everything well. Students who don't do well are the ones that don't read, pay attention in class, and go to office hours.
I took her for summer 4 week class. I've always received A's with little to no effort - not in her class. We had a quiz everyday, homework assignments and reading, and a test every week. She does not return quizzes or tests to you but does go over them verbally. She is a good teacher, knows her stuff, but you better work! dont take summer minis.
If you're looking for an easy teacher, not for you! You must be organized, attend classes and do the homework. Most tests are free answer so you really need to understand subject matter. I would not encourage a summer mini class for an average student. You need to be a top-notch student to excel in a summer mini session.
Gives tons of homework, everyday quizzes, by far the toughest class taken.
I was intimidated because of all the comments but Dr. Demars is by far the best professor I've ever taken. She makes you fall in love with biology. I would recommend taking her if you're going into the medical field she prepares you for it. If you need help she is there you just have to ask. She gives you all the tools to make an A.
Wonderful professor. The class requires a lot of work, if that isn't for you DO NOT take her. Loads of book reading, online quizzes and quizzes every time you walk in class. She sets her students up for success and gives them everything they need to be successful. She is very helpful if you swing by her office!! I
Super hard but AMAZING class and professor. I have taken 3 of her classes and will again. She genuinely wants you to love biology and do well. She is tough but gives you so many tools to succeed with. A lot of reading at home with a quiz, daily in class quizzes, exams, and final. Hard classes but no one better if you want science in your future.
If you are looking for an easy A, DO NOT take Demars, she makes you work for it but you end up learning so much. She cares for her students and is always willing to go out of her way to help understand the material!
Great lecturer but unless you literally write every word that comes out her mouth or record her the slides she post don't help. I do not learn by trying to decipher a diagram in two minutes which is not to her fault. If you don't want to spend 18 hours study and only get a B. Do not take. She treats it like it's your only class.
An interesting class with a wonderful professor. Dr. DeMars is great at preparing you for the exams while making class very engaging and fun. She is the perfect professor for this course, as long as you are willing to make a conscious effort to apply yourself. She wants the whole class to succeed. My favorite prof and course at GSU.
Dr. DeMars works really hard to ensure her students gain a deep understanding of the material. In turn, she expects you to demonstrate high levels of knowledge and application. She provides a fool-proof path to success through very organized readings, quizzes, and in-class activities. Tests are tough but fair. Read questions very carefully.
Dr. DeMars is unlike any professor you will ever have. She is passionate about her field, her teaching&student success. She is organized and engaging. The class is very hard&requires a lot of work but she gives you all of the tools to be successful. I flew through Genetics after this class because I learned so much and was so prepared bc of her.
By far the most thorough and incredible professor I have had. Very clear material and everything is laid out for your success. With that being said, this class takes up so much time. Like, if you want an A, you're going to need to put like, many hours into this class every. single. day. Hope you don't have any other classes, or a job... or a life.
Dr. DeMars is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Her classes are super difficult but, if you put in the work, you will not only get the grade, but truly understand the material. She cares deeply about the process of learning and her teaching style reflects that.
She does NOT give out easy 'A's! If you do the reading you will be fine. She is a very good professor and is truly passionate about the subject material -- always replies to emails within 12hrs, often within 3 hours of you sending them. Very respectable & very fair grader, gives lots of good feedback. Take her if you can, but prepare to work!
DeMars is genuinely such a nice and smart person. Definitely read the textbook. You have quizzes every class, and quizzes over every textbook reading. DeMars is very accessible outside of class and cares about your learning. If you work for it and put the time into studying and preparing you will pass this class and learn a lot.
Dr Demars is a hardass. But she cares, a lot. I don't test well but she offered so much help and resources for me, there was no way I could fail the class. She doesn't lecture, which is annoying, but she provided plenty of other resources. GET READY TO READ. As long as you show up and do the work, you're good
As long as you are willing to actually take GOOD notes on the reading and participate in the top hat assignments that help understand material and go to the LA hours to get an exam boost, you will be good. At first you wont like the class, but she is one of the best. You will actually learn!
Worst instructor EVER! She annoyingly pushes group activities. A group of students relying on other students and if you need more help, ask a LA which is just another student. No lectures because shes not a traditional instructor, it was beyond pointless for the course to be synchronous due to the fact that students have to teach themselves.
Expectations are clear and there are many assignments/activities besides exams. The professor does not teach on any level which is a waste and exhausting to have to teach the material to yourself. The reading assignments are graded based on annotations and during class periods group assignments are completed. Overall, the class format was horrible.
She does not teach. She expects you to read the textbook and memorize everything even when it isn't part of the learning outcomes. Her "teaching" is making you struggle with other students on worksheets so that you are basically trying to teach each other random material. SHE DOES NOT TEACH. you teach yourself hard material
Don't focus on the opinionated comments made during the pandemic aftermath, every class was challenging. Dr. DeMars cares for your learning and you shouldn't expect an A if you don't put in the work. You should not treat her classes as general biology classes. I have learned so much as a student just by her methods of teaching. She's awesome!
Dr. DeMars is a great lady, vey nice and helpful, but there is a lot of work in this class. Be prepared because this class took up the majority of my time and requires a lot of effort and attention to do well.
Dr. Demars is my favorite bio professor so far. Yes, there is a lot of reading and it is very homework heavy but I learned and retained so much information in this class because of her teaching style. She will always be there for you to make sure you understand it and the LA hours are extreme helpful! Take the class, it is definitely worth it
Dr. Demars is by far the best professor Ive ever had. She really cares about the material. Be ready to do a lot of pre class work. All the work that Dr. Demars assigns is NEVER just busy work. All of the work is extremely relevant and helpful. Dont be lazy and youll love her cell and molec class. I cant wait to take her emerging diseases class.
I had Doctor Demars for Cell & Molecular bio at Armstrong. I can 100% say that she has been the most inspiring and motivating professor I have ever had. She has the BEST lectures, always hands on activities & group work! She has the BEST office hours, where she tells you what went wrong with your study habits. She ENSURES you pass, TAKE HER! :)
Role model professor. Lots of work assignments though, but very clear why she did it. By the time exams come you feel like you have seen all of the material a million times. Blooms Taxonomy Based. Very clear grading, and consistency. Graded exams within 24-48 hours, all grades kept in FOLIO on time. You'll understand the material she teaches always
I have all A's in my other classes but I just couldnt figure out a way to do well on her tests. One wrong answer could be up to 6 points off out of 25, so you could get 20 out of 25 right and still get a D. I could explain the entire cell cycle to my tutors, and somehow my grade would not show my knowlege of the subject. Its just frustrating
If you don't want your entire life consumed by Biology 1, DO NOT TAKE DR. DEMARS. Readings and annotations due every single class period. Lectures don't line up with readings. DeMars has a bit of a power problem-- if you don't know your stuff, she will make sure to comment on it. Expects things to be known that have barely been taught, if at all.
Demar is an extremely hard teacher. She does not give help days and solely depends on her LA's for teaching students outside of class meaning it's hard getting professional help. It's not a self-taught class but you have to review a lot yourself because she won't go over stuff with you 1 on 1. You can study every day and still won't pass your test.
Glad I'm on SBO and not Armstrong so I never have to see her again! Took as a minimester over the summer, genuinely one of the worst mistakes of my life!! Truly do not believe that any material was cut and that we learned a full semester in 20 days!! Tests were so hard and rarely saw her, didn't like the videos of her teaching. NO.
She walks into class upset and always has sarcastic remarks to say to students as well as in the lab. I went to ask a question and got patronized on if I even read the chapter in the book, which I did, but sometimes things are overlooked or missed which is why I asked. I tend to feel belittled in her classes as do some others I've talked to.
She is incredibly condescending in both lecture and lab and talks down to students as if they are babies. She places all of the responsibility to help students on her LAs and does not help students. While there are weekly readings, her lectures rarely reflect them or add onto them. Would absolutely not take her class again.
No matter how much time spent studying I was still not able to pass any tests. She assigned readings before every class and never went over what was on the readings. She relies on the LA's to teach and help the students with subjects they don't understand. She also expects you to know stuff she taught or mentioned once. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!
She truly does know how to teach students biology! By the time you have an exam, you would have seen the material a million times. There is a lot of reading and studying that goes in this class. If you put in the work then you will be fine! Plicker quizzes are challenging but they help you learn! I would definitely recommend LA hours!
Very bad at teaching rushes everything
I love her upbeat attitude during lecture and her invitations for discussion, but the reason for my rating is her quizzes and exams. I love biology an insane amount but it feels like no matter how much I study and understand the material, her tests are designed to trip you up and make you fail. It's very frustrating
She's a passionate teacher & really cares about what she does. Tests are worded very tricky and you really have to know your material and study to do well in the course. Teacher assistants have meetings for extra credit points on tests/quizzes if attended (it helps). 40% of course is attendance/homework and final-20%, late grader, office hours help
Demars is very sweet and I love how she relates her lectures to real world things, however she takes forever to respond to emails and she words her test complete different then how she teaches the material which makes the questions extremely difficult to get correct. For my class she also had it to where it couldn't see your grade which sucks!
She doesn't teach AT ALL. You read the textbook before class and discuss with classmates during class time. She doesn't even lecture. Anytime I ask a question she makes me feel stupid. The worst part is she is the only professor for this course at Armstrong, so if you have to take cell & molecular good luck, cause you'll need it.
The most passive aggressive person I have ever met. Doesn't teach whatsoever, just likes to hear herself talk. You will not learn anything. So extremely rude. Wants you to ask questions, but then ridicules you in front of the class and makes an example out of you.
I'm a senior, and out of all my classes I have taken in college this is the ONLY class I have ever struggled in. Her exams and quizzes are difficult for absolutely no reason at all. This is an introductory course. Studying for hours upon hours does NOT pay off. Also she never emails back. She does know her stuff but isn't a great teacher.
Dr. Demars is great! Cell and molec is hard and her teaching style isn't traditional, but it works. If you participate in class, you get extra credit SO DO IT!! If you don't like a hybrid teaching style, I would not recommend her class though. She also has assignments just based on participation so easy 100s!
Professor DeMars is good because she knows what she is talking about and she is passionate about it. However, there are homework assignments everyday and the tests/quizzes are completely different from the material you have learned or gone over in class. The quizzes are usually very short making it very easy to fail but the online assignments help.
While I think that Dr. DeMars is passionate about biology, her test are WAY to hard. For some reason the quizzes she gives during class are weighted the same as the exams, and all the tests she gives out are overly confusing and have trick questions. If you have to take this professor, utilize the hw, lectures, and SLO'S. Good luck.
You'll learn more from Dr. Demars than any other professor at GSU! You have 5 Quizzes, 3 Exams, and a Final, and the rest is all based on completion/attendance. You NEED to come to class, because if you miss even 1 lecture, you'll be behind. Her tests are difficult. She knows what she's doing! She started to slack towards the end of the semester...
love her so much and everything she stands for! changed my life.
Gives quizzes for the beginning of each lecture. Despite the heavy grading, I've still enjoyed this class a lot. She clearly cares about the subjects a lot and tries to incorporate interesting facts into the lessons to keep you attentive.
Professor DeMars was a very caring professor. Her class is extremely difficult. Many smart individuals in this class make the class seem easy. But I really struggled. The reading assignments were overwhelming on top of in-class review quizzes. The questions on the tests are worded so weirdly that it throws you off. I was drowning all semester.
While this class was extremely difficult/geared towards auditory learners, Dr. Demars was very thoughtful and wanted nothing less for me than to succeed. I did struggle in this class since it was heavily graded on tests/quizzes, and she noticed that and was willing to provide me with as much help as she could with her already busy schedule.
This is the first time I've genuinely been able to understand biology. While there is a lot to do in this class, it is easy to get good grades and the assignments aren't hard. Class is interactive so find someone fun to sit by. She's great as far as giving feedback and scheduling time to talk about how to improve if you need it!
pray before you take this class.
She's passionate about the subject and helping you learn. If you are struggling with her class, reach out to her and she will do her best to help you. I enjoyed the class, but it was very difficult. You will need to study a lot to get a good grade.
