Great teacher, eyeopening experience
Very cool teacher, would take her class again
Absolutely awesome
made eng come to life, even better than law&order episodes
Eng.332 has difficult material, but she is a great teacher!
Excellent instructor. I learned a lot in her class and I enjoyed the process.
Awesome instructor. I would easily take her class again.
Makes the material interesting. Likes to help you and cares for students. Tough marker but you leave the class learning lots of great things! Everyone should have at least one course with Genevieve!
Genevieve is the most awesome teacher ever. One of my favorites ever.
Simply put, the best professor I have ever had.
Excellent teacher, encourages intellegent thought instead of just regurgitation.
really enjoyed this prof :)
Genevieve is one of the best professors I have encountered at UCC. She is very approachable and helpful. She wants her students to succeed and not fail. I really enjoyed her class. :)
I found her to be judgemental and feel she graded based on these judgements. She only wanted to here theories that aggreed with her veiws on texts, even though my theory had documentation from other scholars to back it up.
By far one of the best teachers i have ever had. Class discussion is so interesting that you won't want to miss for anything..also a very fair marker.
G.Later is a great, great, lady. She thinks in dichotomies, sees things as black and white. This is great for arguments but poor for understanding. Try one of her classes, its a blast.
Extremely interesting lectures; arrives prepared, with a clear introduction and conclusion. Asks thought provoking questions. Very, very, good. But, does not ever give allowance for late papers; must be on life support before she will give an extension, and even this is questionable!Way to go Later!

Later is a great prof. Many English prof's treat their texts as more real then reality, however, Later leaves her choosen material as open to critique as compliments. Think for yourself and you will do good in her class, which should be the goal of all profs, but isn't.
I found the class to be rather enjoyable. She is not anal about grammar and whatnot, but focuses on development as a writer. VERY helpful for further university studies, in any discpline.

amazing
I found this class interesting to take part in discussion but I felt I didn't learn anything in class about writing. She is a very difficult marker and does not return material in a timely matter. very frustrating!
{it is "Later" not "Latter"} Her class was wonderful, she really encouraged students to develop unique thoughts and helped in effective expression. Almost makes me wish I was an English major.
I really enjoyed her class discussions, but her marking style was different.... VERY hard marker. I handed in every assignment and attended most classes and she almost failed me. Other people in my class share similar situations. Nice lady, interesting class but VERY picky marker
Very strict marker. I found that she critiques my ideas more than the structure of my essays, which is the part I have most trouble with. She focuses more on ideologies than actual writing. Really funny..only a couple people got A's in this class.
As a 110 prof. not very helpful. Her subject matter seems more focused on teaching you about the english language, and not how to write at the university level. We've dubbed her class "the philosophy of the english language" for this reason. Interesting topics discussed, though, even if not to the point that the class was supposed to be about.
She was the best teacher I ever had
debates were enjoyable
This was the worst class of my semester. She was judgmental and carried her judgments out when she would grade material. She was rude all the time and spoke about other students personal buisness in class infront of other students(CONFIDENTIALITY) never wnat her again in my entire life. HATED CLASS!
She yelled at us a lot. She also was unclear when explaining assignments.
I love reading and discussing literature but her class sucks. She encouraged rambling discussions about slightly relevant ideas pertaining to the text. I couldn't force myself to participate in these useless conversations. Extremely out there in regards to what she thinks the author supposedly was trying to convey SOMETIMES THERE IS NO DEEP MEANING
Best English prof I have found yet! Very stimulating lectures, comes to class prepared with a clear direction each day. Her marking is not the easiest however it is detailed and helpful. Can be extremely opinionated and somewhat combative.
Very interesting classes! If you want to learn and not just get by in school take a class with Later!
Lectures were often quite interesting... however, marking was quite difficult and seemed to be based on her opinions of what was being written. Final exam was very hard and difficult to prepare for without reading every assigned reading for the entire year over again.
Everyone who is whining about how hard she is as a marker should maybe take a look at their essays. Yes, she marks hard. That is her job. Teaching you how to write a university level essay is what she gets paid for. The ideology of your thesis will mean nothing if your writing and organization are lacking. Awesome teacher. Love her class.

G's a little intimidating when you first meet her and she's strict. Not to mention a hard marker BUT she's also the most engaging professor I've had at Tru and even though I don't make A's, she's my favorite. She's helpful and knows her stuff. All you have to do it try and speak up in class - she's not going to hold it against you if you disagree.
awesome teacher and is very funny! i love the way she teaches because she makes you think about each possible meaning of what you interpreting. great prof! would like to take more of her courses! made english class fun and not boring!!
She doesnt explain and expects to much.
I'm actually surprised at the number of negative comments, she is a tough marker, but I still LOVE her! Besides just how hilarious she is, I can listen to her for two hours and not be bored because she opens awesome class discussions. And at least she's clear on what she wants, school does require work you know
Excellent Professor! Her lectures are interesting and she is easy to follow. She makes class discussions interesting. Love her sense of humor. Gen is super fabulous however, she is a very hard marker and you have to work hard in order to get a great mark on your papers. Her final exam is brutal, but the class was so great it was worth it!
Genevieve is an awesome teacher because she is hilarious and keeps the class rolling. She is a hard marker however you will learn a lot from her.
Awesome, hilarious teacher. Wicked sense of humor and great class discussions. She's very helpful, and will go over and over papers with you. Very hard marker though, and fairly strict about attendance.
Genevive is possibly the best English teacher I have ever come accross. She is indeed a hard marker, but fair, and not only willing but delighted to go over your work with you. You can learn more from one class with G than your entire high school english experience combined. Fabulous prof.
Genevieve was a wonderful teacher. I believe her marking was difficult in comparison to some courses, but only to those courses that hand you marks. Whether you want to become a better writer and/or critical thinker, Genevieve will give you the opportunity to do so. The class can be very engaging and her marking is only for your best interest.
Possibly the greatest English teacher I have had in all my years of schooling. Her class is primarily discussion based as she uses debate to inspire you to think critically. One of those professors who really opens your eyes to new ideas and is always willing to help you or go over work.
One of the best English teachers I have had. She is not an easy marker, but with that said she provides help while writing and feedback on marked work thus helping you grow as a writer. Her class is discussion based, however she does not pressure anyone to participate. She makes you think and rethink about many thought provoking topics and issues.
She is an amazing teacher & helps a lot. She allows you to use your own opinion and you get to write about interesting things unlike most english classes. I wish I could have her in more classes.
Awesome teacher who always keeps you interested in the subject. Although, I had her for first year and she said she hadn't really taught first year much. Incredibly hard marker, if you're looking for an easy pass it's not with her. If you're very interested in English she is a great choice.
Genevieve's class was mostly really interesting. The discussions were good, and most of the essay topics were decent. She's a pretty merciless marker though. I did worse than I expected until I figured out exactly what it was that she wanted from my papers.
I really enjoy Genevieve as an English professor. She definitely uses ALL of the required readings, which I do appreciate. She also responds really well to the class's interests. I find her to be a fair marker. She can tend to allow certain people to take over a discussion. Also be prepared to defend your statements in class.
Always interesting in class discussion. I felt she was very clear with the what she wanted. Some people do have to read aloud and not always by choice.
Easily the best ENGLISH professor I have ever had. Keeps classes interesting, and students engaged. However, she is an incredibly hard marker and it is nearly impossible to achieve an A in her class.
Made class interesting, kept everyone involved. Provided good material to learn from. Little intimidating, but very nice after you get to know her.
Had her for first year Composition but her lectures had VERY little to do with actually writing (all we did was read and talk about essays). Didn't give us a single lesson on how to properly write at the university level, therefore it was nearly impossible to get a good mark as she's a very tough marker. Wouldn't take her class again.
Assigned many papers, but mostly debated on topics in class, gave a final on something she did not teach
Genevieve was a very engaging professor. one of the best I've ever had & plan to take more classes with her. Her lecture style made me want to come to class, and her honesty and clear cut teaching style made it easy to learn
G is an awesome prof! Very sharp and witty, always trying to get the class involved in her lectures. Hard marker, but if you talk to her about it, she's more than happy to point out a couple things that will help you out!
One of the best faculty members at TRU. Great feedback. If you are ever unsure about anything ask and she will break it down for you. A lot of the learning happens during class discussion so it's definitely important to show up and participate. Classes are always lively and engaging.
Despite complaints that she is a hard marker (which she is), she really does help you become a better writer no matter what your major is. There are not that many papers in the course (about one a month), and lectures are discussion based. There are a lot of readings out of the text to do, but they are fairly short.
I really liked this course because it really made me think at a university level. Her lectures were really interesting because she really made us think about different types of issues and topics that are not discussed on a daily basis.
The class was a waste of time. She gave a 10 minute lecture on the semi-colon, a 5 minute lecture on the colon and told us what pages to reference in the textbook for citations. I was mainly graded on 3 major papers and she is highly critical, but does not always give very clear instructions as to what she expects.
It was a 3 hour lecture, but I was engaged the whole time. She has lots of interesting things to say and the class discussions were really good. The content for the final exam was all based on what we discussed in class, so attendance was mandatory. I enjoyed her so much that I looked up what she was teaching next semester so I could take her class
If you can accommodate Genevieve, she will accommodate you. As a teacher she is a Yoda with gifted vision and soul of philosopher, with diplomacy and shrewdness of a business person. She has the skill-set and tenacity to help her students, but the nature of somewhat thankless job deters her from it, and rationalizes her students as University grade.
Do not take Genevieve as a business student. Teaches English from a artistic perspective, not an applicable one. Very poor teacher, and teaches a course that lacks real lectures and tests on material not covered. Course was more useless than glow in the dark sunglasses. Example she asks for first person in a course called intro to uni writing.
Genevieve is respected, professional, and old fashioned with her teachings. She has a no electronics rule (she will call you out in class), and loves working with very old stories. I found her to be a little disrespectful towards some students at times but all together she was a fine prof and if you have to take her class, you'll survive.
honestly sucks
One of the harder teachers I have had, however if you are ready to put in the work the results will come. Always very approachable and is happy to take time to help you improve on your writing. Usually alot of reading, however you can get by in the course by not doing the readings and just attending the lectures to get the notes.
Over the course of the semester I found that Dr. Later was very open to offering outside help to me however, I felt as if it was more of a waste of time than being beneficial to my writing. She would communicate that my work and effort was exceptional but would consistently be overly critical, almost to the point of being unfair.
Dr. Later's intro to uni writing was overall a good class for me. Lectures are discussion based and if you take notes of the important points and tips she gives you will do well. Lots of reading assigned, but attendance is the most important. She is a hard marker, but if you can really understand what she expects ( which can be hard) you'll do good
If you're an international student - run. Even a bright Canadian student doesn't really have a chance to get an A. The course is unbelievably hard and Genevieve is the toughest grader I've ever met. However, her lectures are amazing, very informative and interesting. This course with her will work for you if you're exceptionally good already.
The only thing was that I felt like to get a good grade in my writing, I needed to write what she wanted to hear rather than my actual opinion. So yeah, she says shes a hard marker and its true
Not sure how she teaches in person but DO NOT do an online class with her. She was 2 weeks late to post EVERY lecture but kept all the due dates the same (didnt even have all the lectures out before the final exam was due). I have handed 3 papers in and have gotten no feedback so far, first was handed in in November. She also doesnt email back.
She started the class late, stayed 1-2 weeks behind on lectures the whole time and didn't even have them all uploaded by exam time; her lectures seemed poorly prepared and dull. She hasn't handed back almost any grades, even now, and the one she did hand back I found was ridiculously harsh for how she teaches and with unclear criteria. AVOID HER.
AWFUL. There was little to no criteria for papers and she marked insanely hard. Seems as though you needed to write what she wanted to hear even if she asked for your own opinion. Shes late for everything, lectures were 2 to 3 weeks behind, I STILL have not received my final grade and she does not email back in a timely manner. Yikes.
Loved the content and found her grading fair. However, her lectures were about two weeks late the whole semester and the schedule for papers and tests was not adjusted. I am still waiting for marks and the next semester starts in a few days. I would not take her online classes again due to a lack of care and punctuality.
Nearly impossible to get an A. She took weeks and sometimes even over a month to grade papers and was not clear on requirements for most papers.
Had a course with her last semester and still have not received my grade. Thought maybe it was bad timing for her as to why she was late for everything but guess not. I have another class with her tomorrow (couldnt avoid it) for new semester and have not received any word from her, even after emailing her last week...
Lectures are super interesting and engaging. Incredibly tough marker who gives very little feedback/resources to help you improve.
This class is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. Dr. Later is an unbelievably hard marker, ALWAYS posts lectures 1-2 weeks late, takes forever to return marks for papers, and seems to mark papers in regards to what she wants to hear, even if the criteria for the assignments state that you can have your own opinion, not just hers.
Professors like this is the reason why I go to college. I dont go to college the party I go to college to study and to learn.
Great teach. Would def take again.
Genuinely the worst professor I have had in my 4 years of university. She is unkind to students and marks according to her own opinions on the subjects. She's one of those profs who claims that it's impossible to get an A in her class.
A very lecture heavy course with lots of reading. She never checks her emails, or just doesn't respond. Don't expect to get your papers back in a timely manner or get helpful feedback. She's also slightly condescending towards students at times. This course is mandatory, but try to take it with a different prof.
Condescending, very lecture heavy, uninteresting, and any required readings. Would not take a class with this prof again.
Attendance is required, even in times of covid. Not very accommodating. She is rude and disrespectful to some students at times. Boring lectures. Avoid at all costs unless you want to struggle.
Shes a really nice person , sometimes takes long to mark and is a hard marker but you learn well under her
As an academic, Prof. Later is very knowledgeable in her field and knows how to hold a conversation. Sadly thats where my appraisal ends. As a teacher, shes condescending to her students, unreasonably tough marker, incredibly late feedback, and barebones criteria on heavy weighted projects, all behind futile lectures. Cant recommend.
She takes time to mark your paper, but her comment may not be what you are expecting. I recommend having a meeting with her as she does go over the grade with you. She is very considerate and respectful once you get to know her! Overall she may be a late marker, but does care about the essays.
Genevieve is a very tough marker. Her feedback is basically "copy and pasted" per student. She is kind of funny but can definitely be scary (yells at students, doesn't believe you). Also, no creative freedom with essays. The entire mark is based on essays and the grammar test. If you have the choice, don't take Genevieve.
To start with I really enjoy her lectures. However, she is notoriously late getting grades back and often by the end of term you don't know where you stand. Last semester grades were not posted until the first day of the winter semester. Be prepared to write essay for her style and opinions. She has rules no other ENGL professors at tru have.
This is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Genevieve was hard to reach via email and her grading is very opinion based. She gave unclear feedback on assignments and grades very hard. She was unspecific about exactly what she was looking for and was more focused in lectures on what we were writing about rather than how to do it.
She won't give clear feedback and can be rude towards students. She marks based on her writing style, no other teacher marks as hard as her. DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!
Really not as bad as others say. She can be intimidating at first but was pretty nice after the first few weeks, Only things I didn't like was her no computers/phones policy and the final self evaluation paper. Writing 1k words about myself to get a final grade is kinda dumb
Dr Later was definitely a wake up call to University, however, I think she was a little too harsh. She's pretty decent, but not great with Moodle which made things hard and she doesn't respond very fast to emails. She's really doesn't like technology and don't allow it in her classroom. Other then that, she's pretty decent.
The most rigid marker I have come across in my English Degree. Her lectures tend to be incredibly dull with only discussion.
An extremely tougher marker and only gives a good grade if your stance is aligned with her thinking. Very slow in getting things back as she is not computer savvy. Avoid at all costs if you don't want you GPA to go down. She needs to have clearer criteria and should be more open minded.
Dr. Later's class was great (unlike what others have claimed here). The course relied heavily on class discussion and she was incredibly interested in our points of view on the subject. She does not allow technology in class, but her thoughts flows in a very logical order, so it is easy to write notes.
She is the worst prof, very slow at getting back and her classes are boring too.
Dr. Later's classes were something... Her lectures are more of a conversation which can be nice at times, but super boring during uninteresting topics. She is a VERY hard marker. Feedback was not the best and does not help a lot to better your writing. Criteria for the papers are basically absent. (written once during a lecture, that's it)
Her course is okay and she likes debates. However,, I was in a car crash and missed the final exam, so she said I could do a paper to get that credit. I did the paper and submitted it way before it was due. I took her class in Fall 2022 semester and it took her until August 2023 to give me a grade, so that wasn't great. Also, she hates technology.
She has outdated material, very lecture heavy, takes for ever to grade a paper, and isn't willing to teach. She picks at all little details and gives very low grades overall. She does not meet in person and when I set up a phone call to try to do better she told me I don't have what it takes to do good due to high school and was not willing to help
Her no technology policy was the least of my worries in her class. She gives little to no instruction or advice for assignments and is an incredibly hard marker. She opens assignment submissions at the last minute (literally 10pm when it is due at 11:59). She can be quite rude, definitely would not take her class again.
Genevieve was an unkind professor, in my academic career I have never encountered another professor that is publicly as disrespectful to students as Genevieve is. Genevieve also submitted an incorrect and much lower grade than I could have physically gotten considering my other marks, and this was not amended for months.
Her instructions are often very vague and she finds random things to dock you marks on. She expects you to read her mind and write exactly what she wants you to write, even after telling us to express our own opinions.
She is often passive-aggressive or demeaning when talking to students and somewhat socially unaware. She doesn't allow the use of technology in class to take notes or for anything else. Genevieve is a tough grader and is unbelievably slow at returning assignments, it's the last week of classes, and we have only received one grade back.
The discussions that Genevieve allowed for in class is the only thing that her class had going for it. Her lectures often dragged on, she repeated the same talking points and critiques over and over again, and she took forever to mark your papers. She's entertaining, but not enough to make her class worth it
Genevieve's classes were just a bit of a bore. Nothing of note is really taught in them other than the history or context of our writing subjects. This was unfortunate as come time for the papers, we had little idea of how to write them in the way she wanted. Her grading was also quite strict.
She shares her bias, so DO NOT write against her or else you will do bad. She gives very bad feedback. Takes months to mark your paper. Expects you to read her mind about assignments. She also does not like science kids.
Very slow grading papers (been waiting over a month to get one back). After she finally graded our first paper, she showed up to class (at 8:30 in the morning, mind you) to dog us and tell us how horrible we did. She warned us at the beginning of the course about how many people don't like her style. Take her advice and find a new professor
well to start she made me want to switch my major because of how bad she was, all she does is mark bad and gives little to no feedback I have always loved English and loved to write but now I hate it I'm telling you now as a first year who thought they were good at English do not take her class she's mean and strict pick someone who likes their job
There are like a dozen other people who teach intro to uni writing. Pick any of them and you'll be fine. Avoid this woman like the plague.
She is a very difficult marker, like very difficult.
