Sparks is great, I took Natural Disasters with her instead of Chem, so worth it. Only 4 tests including midterm and final (study guides exactly like the tests.) And very easy homework. Lectures can sometimes get dry but its pretty interesting. Toward the end of the semester she showed us way more documentaries. Would defiantly take her again.
Easiest A I have ever received. If you can't get a good grade then you never should up to class. She gives so many chances to redo HW even up to the end of the semester. The Lectures are dry, but she's gives you what you need. She honestly wants everyone to pass, and would automatically hand out A's if she could. Hw done in class .
Sparks was an amazing professor. My grade dropped after the second test and I met with her and she helped me figure out how I should go about getting my grade back up. She really cares about her students. Her lectures are also very interesting and the homework isn't hard. I learned a lot in this class.
Take this class if you are ok doing homework assignments. Easy reading logs weekly, easy points. Tests are fair. Mandatory field trip.
Fantastic Professor! She truly cares for her students success, she gives out tons of extra credit opportunity's. The field trip is very good I recommend going! over all great class
She is a very caring professor. Class is really easy. If you respect her it will be the easiest class ever. Reading logs every week but are really easy. She really cares about her students futures and is willing to help.
Genevieve Sparks is an amazing professor. Reading logs are easy to do and she offers extra credit as well. The field trip is mandatory and it was still fun to attend. I will take her again if I get the chance.
I took the Geology Writing Intensive with her and she makes the class so fun, applicable, and educational. She structured the class so that you dont have to do too much at once. Well organized. Do response papers early!!! She has a wealth of knowledge in her field and shares it with anyone who comes to class. SAC STATE IS LUCKY TO HAVE HER! 5
She is awesome! Very interesting lectures and I nearly switched my major to geology! To pass her class all you need to do is do the reading logs which is the only homework you have. Would highly recommend
Great teacher, she does a lot for students. Start papers early. I felt like the class was preparing me for a job and I remember so much info from class. Topics include waste disposal, natural disasters, mining, and mass extinctions. I felt like I came away with a lot of great info from this class. Worth saving web links she provides in class too.
Wonderful professor! Caring and VERY knowledgeable about the topics. Will work with you on every aspect of improving your writing. Highly recommend!
An amazing and intelligent Professor. She will go out of her way to help you. Attend class, don't procrastinate, listen to her feedback and you will receive and A
Professor Sparks was an amazing professor. As long as you do the homework(you can email her and she literally tells you where to find the answers) and show up to class you will pass. DO THE STUDY GUIDES. The questions on the study guide are the exact questions on exams. She gives so much extra credit opportunities. Her average grade is a 90% pass
This was my writing intensive course and Prof. Sparks made this class very enjoyable and interesting for a non-geology major. Don't get tricked at the beginning cuz you might think this class is easy. It is easy if you do what you're supposed to do. Attendance matters, extra credit opportunities, easy exams, and good feedback on papers.
You will get either an A or an F. There is no in between. She is a great professor who really pushes you to do you're work. It's writing intensive so you have a bunch of jounals but just do them and show up and you'll get an A.
Gen clearly communicates exactly what she expects from her students, and as long as you do that, you will get an A. Her style of teaching is great, and if there is any issue or question she is always more than willing to help. I know she reads these reviews too so, Hi Gen!!
Professor Spars was amazing! She cares about her students and is very accommodating as long as you let her know in advance of any concerns you may have. Simple steps to get an A - Attend Class & take notes -DO ALL of the home works -Complete the study guides -Lets you use notes for the exams
Gen makes sure everyone knows exactly what to do to get and A and doesnt ask for ridiculous things of you to earn the A. Just DONT FALL BEHIND and youll be good. Also don't miss lecture, there are things she puts in there which aren't availible online. She is highly experienced in her field and loves to help prepare you for your career/realworld.
Had to only do 15/ 21 homework assignments. 3 exams and final is exempt if you are above 90% towards the end of the semester. Lectures are very dry and videos were watched about 50% of the class time. VERY slow to respond to email and will give excuses for not being able to respond in time.
Only have to do 15/21 homeworks assigned. DO THE STUDY GUIDE; it's half the credit of the exams. Don't fall behind, if you start to try to catch up. If you need help, she's happy to help you. If you have a 90% or above by the end of the semester you don't have to take to final!
She's a really chill teacher! This class was a very easy A, everything was based off lecture slides! however, one thing that was frustrating is she can take long to grade the hw assignments, and the hw assignments are your best friend when it comes to doing the study guides!
She is a nice teacher & is well experience in various areas of geology. This is a demanded writing intensive so be prepared to write. She required six response papers, 3 exams and you could be exempted from the final. The study guides are long but not too difficult. 2,000 word rough draft and 2,000 word term paper. stay on top of assignments.
Professor Sparks is amazing! She wants her students to pass and does everything in her power to see that you do. She offers extra credit, lectures on all of the homework assignments ahead of time then makes her slides accessible to you. She is willing to stay and answer questions or look over your work before submission. Very clear in expectations!
Professor Sparks is one of the best best Professor. She care about her students a lot and willing to help anytime. She always response to the emails. I took Geol 140 Writing Intensive class. She's always prepared and knows her stuff very well. It is an easy A if you follow the instructions. As long as you do your home work and go to the class.
The best of the best!.
Not a geology major but this class is super easy. 3 easy exams because you could use the study guide for open notes during the exam. It's the same exact questions so you're basically copying and pasting what you wrote beforehand onto the exam. No final if you get an A in this class. One simple term paper. No textbook needed.
Shes a good professor. There are 3 exams and the answers are straight off of the study guide that you can use during the exams. There is a final but you dont have to take it if you have an A in her class. It might not seem like you have to go to class but trust me theres a lot of class work that plays a big part in your grade.
Gen Sparks is a committed and knowledgable professor. She takes her job seriously. I enjoyed taking her class. Her lectures are extremely informative and I found them very interesting. My concerns were minimal, but one stood out: don't get too far ahead with the material because she may change her plans. In fact, complete assignments as they come.
This class was easy. Attendance wasn't mandatory but there are sometimes in-class assignments. She lectures the whole class period and, honestly, they're extremely, EXTREMELY boring. The best thing about this class though is that if you have an A, you don't have to take the final. The worst thing was that there was a mandatory field trip
For students who need a WI not specific to their major, do yourself a favor and TAKE HER! This professor is a Sac State gem! DO your work, and you will get the credit. If you skip class, don't expect to pass. Majority of the class will finish with an A. She genuinely wants every student to succeed and her geology passion is contagious! Fun lectures
Professor Sparks is amazing. she's really transparent with her students as well as with her intentions for the class. Slides and lectures are straightforward. About 1-2 homework assignments per week. 1 mandatory field trip. 3 exams with study guides (study guide is exactly the same as the exams) and final exam only for those with less than 90%.
Shows up to class. It's not hard but showing up to class really helps. She's amazing and very understanding. Gives extra credit, but it's from lectures in class. Do the homework it helps with study guide which are not hard at all.
You have to actively come to class, as she randomly assigns class work. If you're not there, you don't get the points. Her study guide is almost identical to the actual exam. She gives a lot of extra credit. However, if you don't get a 90 or above in her class, she'll make you do the final, but the final has no study guide.
She is a great professor, she cares about her students. Her class should be easy for everyone to pass w/ an A, because all the information you need for exams is given to you. Talk to her if issues arise, she's a reasonable and understanding professor. Take her I would recommend.
I honestly don't understand the high praise. Yes, it is an easy A, but she can be quite condescending in the classroom and brash in response to students. I thought that I would receive more constructive criticism to help my writing, instead I'm wondering whether I've been "selected" to receive on A or punished to take her final that people fail.
On the bright side, you get an A if you understand how to use Word, but I didn't like the professor's attitude towards imperfection. She waived the final if you got an A, but described it as something you didn't want to take because she wouldn't prepare you for it, and wanted it to be a "negative consequence" for "underperforming" (ie getting a B+)
I have always struggled with science and she seriously is the most amazing professor I've had at Sac State. If you pay attention and do the homework you are 100% set for the tests and will get an A. She really helps everyone get an A, the homework questions are from lecture, and the class was really interesting, no boring rocks! Taking her again!!
This class is straightforward and very informative as long as you stay up to date and put in some effort you'll do well
LET ME PREFACE BY SAYING I HATE ONLINE CLASSES! Professor Sparks did an awesome job making this class easy to follow and succeed in online this semester. She really wants every single student to succeed and that shows in her availability for us and opportunities to meet outside of class. She does everything she can to work with you!! TAKE HER CLASS
My fav professor!! She is the most understanding & caring professor I've taken throughout college. Unlike these other professors so rude and so hard to get in contact with. She makes the time for you as long as you reach out to her in advance. Her class is pretty straight forward and the workload is doable & I enjoyed all of her lectures in class.
Interesting and informational class. If you show up, you learn a lot, and he get all the info you need to do the homework and pass the exams. The professor is very helpful, caring, and wants all her students to pass. There is weekly homework, but nothing unreasonable except maybe finals week.
Professor Sparks is very nice, interesting, respected, knowledgeable, understanding, & fair to everyone. She deserves the highest praise. Just like in any other class- if you don't show up & slack off on the assignments, you'll make it hard on yourself. This is called "Writing INTENSIVE" for a reason & it's required for us to graduate from college.
Professor Sparks is one of the real gems at Sac State, truly cares about students, and will work with them throughout the semester to get an A. Only two exams - but they come with study guides you must also turn in, which give all the answers. No final if you have above a certain grade. Easy A if any effort is given.
Very caring and understanding. 3 exams, but the exams are just the study guides. All the questions come from the HW so you could just rewrite your answers from the HW. Holds live zoom classes and records them so you could go back and rewatch. Very easy A as long as you do the hw.
Sparks is rude and regularly goes on rants about how she feels disrespected by her students. While getting an A is fairly easy, her feedback on papers is delayed and unclear and she demeans you if you are not perfect. Proceed with caution.
Great professor to have for a writing intensive class. Expect a big, but doable workload. She is very caring and will do all she can to help you succeed! This course revolves mainly around six response papers (500-word minimum) and a term paper (2000-word minimum). The key is to communicate with her, if you have any difficulties.
Lectures were recorded this semester BUT I really recommend you to go to class and ask lots of questions. Professor Sparks is amazing and cares a lot about her students. She's outgoing and makes a 3 hour class feel short. Do the study guides and you will have no problem on the exams.
I loved her class! She is super flexible and willing to help. She responds fast to emails too. If you do well as a class she can make your test the study guide. Also if you have an a you dont have to take the final. I took her over winter intersession and she made things so easy to get done and allowed time in class for assignments. Take her!
There is a lot of homework and labs but it's very straightforward and she is very understanding and somewhat lenient. If you just show up and do the work then it's an easy A. We worked in groups multiple times. I really enjoyed the class, the exams were super easy.
Professor Sparks is amazing! She really cares about her students and truly wants you to learn and succeed in her class. Ton of homework though, so just stay on top of it and do not procastinate. Also, you may be exempt from taking the final exam if you have a 90% or higher in the class, so stay on top of it from the beginning!
An amazing professor! There is a lot of homework however its all out of the PowerPoints she posts after the lecture, same with the exams. If you finish with at least a 90% you will not have to take the final exam which does not have a study guide. Shes extremely caring and kind, would 100% recommend taking her class.
Not a lot of homework to do every week and the assignments are posted pretty fast & early. Ask her for help ALWAYS, if you cannot find the answer in the slides/lectures because she is serious about learning and doing your own work. My only issue was that she has a bit of attitude when talking and communication with her is kind of frustrating.
She is extremely well experienced and knows everything in great detail. She is VERY understanding, as long as you do the work you will be okay. The homework is not even hard; she posts slides and all needed information. She is supper sweet and an excellent teacher. she makes lecture relatable and interesting
MAKE FRIEND!!! Love how she doesn't have a limit of letting us resubmit homework and how everything on our study guide (exam) was based on the homework. Most of the time during her lecture she gives out the answers. She gives you an opportunity to get an A in the class so if you don't it's basically your fault. It challenges but you learn a lot
She is a really easy grader but she was so unorganized this semester and was so behind on grading. Even though we had a term paper and five response papers, she still assigns more assignment to do when she doesnt even have time to grade. It is an easy A but be prepared to do a lot of work. But she is flexible and very nice.
She is really behind on grading. She keeps assigning more assignments when she still hasnt graded the previous ones. She takes about a month to grade and give feedbacks. Her emails are so unclear and she makes it so complicated and confusing near the last few weeks of class. When I tried to ask for help, she sounds rude and unprofessional.
Professor Sparks is a great professor and this was an enjoyable class. I am not a geology major, I took it as an elective but it was interesting! She does assign quite a few assignments but as long as you keep up and communicate with her you will get an A.
Can be behind on grading, tends to not respond to emails very quickly. Make sure to show up to the lectures as there are in class assignments worth a lot. You don't have to take the final if you have an A. Overall, a really nice professor and she wants you to succeed. You can tell she wants every student to pass, and is willing to answer questions
Knowledgeable Prof. keep assignment open until exams. flexible to reach out, 6 HW, watch videos and do assignments. 2 exams for which she give study guides. actually the study guides are exam all question come from HW. Kahoot fun games and give Starbucks gift cards to winners. Very easy A that she wants everyone to get. Lucky if you get her class.
I have just started this semester with professor Sparks and so far she is a very amazing professor. She cares and teaches so well in order for her students understand the class. Almost every assignment so far she has given comments on the homework we do and makes sure that we fully understand what she is teaching. Be sure to reach if you need help!
Attendance may be RANDOMLY taken (free homeworks) + in-class activities (Kahoot, videos, etc) that would be graded. Optional textbook. Goes over the hw BEFORE deadline (Sunday). 2 exams + final exam (comprehensive). Students w/ 90% or higher & have submitted all work on time (No final exam for you!) Exams = Study guides (used during exam). Easy A!
Literally the most chill class ever. All you have to do is show up and you will do great. It would be hard to not get an A in this class.
The class was very easy as long as you attended class. ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT. There will be in class activities in order to track your attendance and participation. Her lectures are confusing and not very attention grabbing. The class is easy but I found it difficult to talk to her about issues if she doesn't already know you.
This was an easy class. Attendance is mandatory since there are in class assignments but you she gives free hw passes every once in while. Her test were super easy if you do the study guide you good since the questions on the study guide are the same as the test and you can use your study guide during the test.
The class is really easy and it is a "show up and get credit" class but she has set it up to be extremely tedious for assignments and then complains about how tedious the class gets. The final paper is worked through the entire semester but final turned in assignment has to be absolutely perfect otherwise she will send it back. Its 0 or 100.
Professor Sparks wants all her students to pass and makes it fairly easy to do so as long as you attend class and do the work. There is weekly homework, 2 exams and study guides (unless she makes you take the final), and some other assignments. Lectures were interesting even though I have never been that into geology.
She is hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. I really hope I can take her again. I am a CRJ major, yet I still loved her class. She is so caring, the class average was 92%. One of the best professors at this campus.
Took her class for my WI requirement. She is a good professor, very straightforward and states her expectations for the class clearly. Overall, I enjoyed her class. The material wasn't hard to learn, but we did get a lot of assignments. Last week of the semester we had many different things to finish up, which was just a bit overwhelming.
Professor Sparks was rude, condescending, and unorganized. Lectures were always messy, expectations were always unclear, and she could never keep track of due dates, student names, or grading. Takes days to respond to emails or never gets back to you at all. Blamed students for the fact that she was so behind on grading at the end of the semester.
She is one of the best professors to choose for a WI class. She is exceptionally helpful and understanding, especially considering the amount of writing involved in the course. If you inform her in advance, she is willing to extend due dates. The class comprises 2 exams, 5 papers (each around 600 words), and a final paper of 2000 words.
Sparks was rude, insensitive, and pushy.Grades things oddly and asks you to redo them when you put down answers that she gave you in class. Constantly nags you online to get things done when assignments can be turned in late. Very picky with your answers when the questions are open ended and she says each student would have different answers.
Prof. Sparks highly particular on assignments claiming that every student will provide a unique response. She gives off paranoid vibes about students committing plagiarism. I got falsely accused of copying another student in the class when our answers were vastly different. Only similarity was we got the same 2 true or false questions incorrect.
Don't get me wrong, she is an amazing teacher, super passionate about every topic, and provides an unique viewpoint based on her knowledge. However, do NOT take her 140 class if you hate writing or lots of work. The class is composed of 5 essays, two exams, and a term paper of over 1,800 words, which is TONS more than other writing intensives.
Easy professor. However, she is very strict on attending lecture and on what you put down on the homework. She often makes you redo certain questions that are "wrong" in the homework even though it's the answers she tells you to put down. She is also often rude and always seems to be irritated. Exams are just copy and pasting from the study guide.
Grading absolutely does not make any sense. Exams are pointless if were literally just copying our answers off the study guide. Goes after you like a dog if you miss class and takes attendance everyday. Assignments were easy but the way she grades and gives feedback is like her life is dependent on us.
Sparks had a difficult semester so the of Fall 2023 may not have been a great time to attend. But she absolutely will make you into a better writer, cares about your work, is stern but forgiving if you speak to her outside of class. This semester definitely skewed how she is perceived at CSUS though, so try not to let this semester be a totality.
Make sure you show up to class and if you cannot, LET the professor know. Homework is easy, she usually gives out answers, and if not they are in the slides. Exams are literally the study guide answers so if you do the study guide you're all set.
I highly recommend taking this course with someone else.
Super weird grader. Will give you a zero on homework for missing a single question. She is also extremely paranoid about cheating. Almost every class will feature her ranting about how everyone in the class is a cheater. I understand the frustration but it definitely gets old. Overall, she comes across as very condescending. wouldn't recommend.
Amazing Professor! Homework and in-class assignment are very straightforward and if you have any questions she's readily available via email or Remind App. Plenty of Extra Credit opportunities for students who are struggling and attending class regularly gives you 2 free homework passes to use. Exams are consistent with what's covered in lecture.
A quick note, the study guides are long, and over the winter session was time consuming, but they were pretty easy. Professor Sparks has some cool stories, and is very relaxed. She doesn't allow cheating, the study guides were the exams, but you can correct your study guides. You'll watch a lot of dinosaur videos, she's a cool Prof overall.
Professor Sparks was overall really amazing. She truly cares about her students & will help you out any way she can. Ignore these negative comments. They were either rude & condescending to her or cheated because she really works with everyone. Attendance is mandatory and you get second chances if you miss questions on homework and exams. Take her!
I can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable classes I've ever had. If you're looking for a straightforward course with a professor who is both engaging and clear, this is the class for you. Communication is key, she will accommodate your needs if you are overwhelmed with other classes or if you have something personal going on.
Yes, there is lots of homework, but she goes over it during lectures and helps you if you need it. ALL Homework can be submitted late and corrected for full credit up until Exams. Exams are straight out of the study guide. Unlike other professors, she is easily reachable outside of class if you have any concerns.
Professor might be one of the best professors I have ever had, Sac state has to give her raise! Huge Class you can tell she has a lot on her plate, yet she always checks up on her students, she doesn't want anyone to fail. Make sure you show up, do your part and communicate with her and you will be okay! Lectures are interesting & hilarious.
Show up to lecture, turn in assignments, communicate as necessary and be honest. If you do these things you will pass the class with flying colors. Professor Sparks is a very caring and no bull shit kind of teacher 10/10
Professor Sparks is a great professor. We had 2 take home exams and for the hw she gave the answers in class, so attendance matters. Very fair and accessible!
Actually 5/5, very fair, accommodating to students, her class is what a GE class should be. Answers to homework are given in lectures so make sure you try to attend. Works to make sure students pass the class.
Very accommodating, very clear of her expectations! She is a professor who actually cares about your success as a student. Show up to class and put in the work and you will secure an A. Do not listen to any negative reviews from students who do not want to even try. Definitely one of the best professors I've had at sac state.
Best teacher Ive had in years. Ive always struggled w/science classes to the point where I dread the class but I enjoyed learning. She goes above & beyond for students. She will help you but you have to meet her halfway. Attendance matters.
This has been the best professor I have encountered by far at Sac State. She makes her classes as easy as possible for students. If you can't maintain at least a 90% then you are the problem but she will work with you in getting your assignments in. She goes over homework in class during lecture so attendance is crucial.
Extremely easy A. You could hook up a hamster wheel to a computer and the hamster would pass this class it is that easy. That being said I would rather be trapped in a time loop where I am continously burned alive rather than listen to another one of Sparks' (mandatory) lectures. Terrible lecturer.
Professor Sparks is a genuine, caring, and understanding person. She is determined to find a way to help her students pass, as long as you allow her to. Her lectures are engaging and clear, and she is humorous. It is also obvious that she is very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches. I would 100% take her over and over again!
Prof. Sparks is a brilliant geologist and wonderful teacher. What a pleasure it was to take her GEOL170 course. Her lectures and slides are captivating. She prepares you well for exams. I look forward to taking more of her classes if possible.
Best option for CE majors looking for a writing intensive. There may be simpler options for the req, but this class has important concepts for CE geology and Prof Sparks explains them well. There were six 500 word essays, one midterm, one final (ONLY if you did horribly on the paper), and a presentation on the main paper developed throughout.
Class was okay. It was very interesting. My only complaint is she was a bit rude and seemed to pick favorites.
Spends at least the first 10 minutes of class talking about how all students are bad and they cheat all the time. She always had an attitude and was rude to students. Honestly kind of cocky because she brought up how she has a degree from UC Davis at least once a day and it gets old. Very lecture heavy but class is easy A.
The class is okay, but takes forever to grade, and when asked about the grading she either shrugs it off, or accuses you of cheating. Homework is fairly easily done, just show up to the lectures.
Despite orienting the lecture material around her professional and personal experiences in the field, Sparks comes across as dispassionate and uninterested. Uninspiring but mandatory in-class lectures. When asked about ungraded assignments, becomes challenged and argumentative. CSUS is lucky she's retiring.
Professor very paranoid about cheating You can only pass if you attend class you miss a lot when your gone Will tell students certain answers if they're in class but if you miss, you'll have to "figure it out" Has an attitude, tells students to communicate, but when they try, she has makes rude remarks. Wouldn't take again if I didn't have to,
Expecting my stuff to not be graded for awhile was not what I was hoping for. Did all the assignment but most of them are not being graded, so it hard to know what will my grade be by the time of the final exam. When asking or emailing her about grade, she either "brush it off" or make remark about "cheating" and "to never do it again".
There is a lot of homework, but if you go to class, she gives you the answers. The first exam is straight from the study guide. The only bad thing about this class is that she takes forever to grade stuff. Don't miss class, do all the assignments, and communicate with her, and you will pass with an A! The lectures were also fun and interesting.
Sparks was a great professor! You get what you put into the class, she was very helpful and genuinely wants you to succeed, if you get a bad grade its because you either didn't show up or do your work. Everything is very easy, be there and do your work and you will pass. She does take a bit to grade, but she does grade by hand and online.
Professor Sparks makes her class as easy as possible. Attend lectures, turn in assignments, and communicate with her - you'll likely get an A. unstuck AI was super helpful for exam prep too.
