Very clear and helpful in answering questions, great with office hours, also subtly amusing :)
taking the class right now. EASY CLASS..... besides the fact that you have to learn everything from the book.
My second time taking calc, very helpful during office hours, but I found tests/quizzes challenging

Hate him. Unforgiving and hard to understand with his heavy German accent. Wittingly funny at times, but overall a boring and unhelpful teacher. Studied 8-10 hrs/wk in Math lab, but had t0 drop. Took again w/ Schwitters, got a B. Math Lab is excellent.
He is horrible. You can't use calculators for his tests, and if you fail any 2 tests in the semester, you automatically fail the class, regardless if you ace any other test.
He sucks. His grading is subjective and always unfair. He doesn't understand problems he hasn't seen before and he seems like a dullard.
Doesn't speak english well enough to understand your questions, let alone answer them. He doesn't give you credit for the hours of homework you have to do. How can you expect to judge a students math ability with only 12 test questions? If you have a bad test day, then you're screwed.
Most of the students in the class were so disinterested that they refused to learn. Bachman was a very good professor and if people put in the effort they would have gotten more out of the course.
The problems on the test are much harder than what's covered in class. There are only three tests. Homework doesn't count.
Does not care about teaching
Terrible, tests were incredibly hard and does not give partial credit. Do not take the class if he is teaching it.
One thing that I can say for sure is that He Loves Math. On the first day of class, he showed us how "pi" came to be. Interesting man. Gives out only quizzes every friday and then a final exam. Quizzes are fair, out of the book, but doesnt give too much partial credit. The final was terrible.
Sooooo. Hard. Didn't get it...and I am a math major..
His ability to teach the material is nonexistent. While most likely very intelligent, as a fellow member in the profession, it's fairly easy to recognize which ones shouldn't be teaching, and he most definitely is one of them. His vernacular is difficult to understand. I dropped the class and recommend not taking a class with him.

This guy can't teach. His exams are impossible. No partial credit on his exams.
1st Exam...easy...2nd exam...hell. This is the only math class that I have ever failed a test. He cannot teach. He does not curve. He gives little to no partial credit. It's pretty devastating when the exams, the only grades in the class, are only four questions and you miss just one part of it and get no credit for it.
He was a great teacher for this subject. I had taken the class before and failed it but with Bachman the subject was very clear and I now am confident in the subject. His test were easy and exactly what he gave as homework. Plus he is pretty funny and keeps things interesting.
Prof. Bachman was excellent! He makes challenging concepts understandable and will explain things until you get it. Contrary to other prof ratings, he is very engaged with students and is always available for any questions. Has an excellent sense of humor!
I read all of the other comments. ARE YOU KIDDING?? This is the easiest math class that I have been in since high school. Prof. Bachman is very is to understand and he is always willing to help the ones who actually want to learn. His tests are very easy. I would take a class with this guy again.
He makes math so easy. The tests are easy as long as you study. Will take again.
I didn't like him at first because if you have a bad test day, you better ace the other tests, but I can say he has a deep love of the subject and is willing to help you until you get it. Didn't pass the first time, but taking (and passing) with him this time.
Professor Bachman in my opinion is completely unfair! Dont take him, you;ll regret it! All the other teachers are so much better than him. He's horrible.
Great teacher, hard subject. Incredibly well-structured class. He teaches in manageable bits, and is willing to take time to explain things. Quite possibly the best math TEACHER in the entire university. Tests follow the homework, so there's absolutely no reason why you should fail a test if you could do the homework. Very fair.
Bachman is THE greatest math professor I've had yet. He teaches math from an "intuitive" prospective, basically eliminating the need for any memorization at all. If you prefer memorizing abstract formulas, then perhaps this isn't the teacher for you, but if you want to actually learn something about math, definitely take him.
I had him for Calc. III. I thought he was the most fair teacher I've ever had in regards to grading. He grades on the process more so than the answer. So if you make a calculation mistake, you'll still get most of the points. Do the homework, and you'll do fine.
Took this class for summer. He's one of the fairest math professors I've ever had, and the material on the exams is not too hard at all. Don't be lazy, do your homework more than twice over, and this is an easy A. He also tries to teach different techniques and alternate methods to make it easier.
He's a fair teacher and teaches alternate methods for problem solving. Was always available to help. I really enjoyed his class and would definitely take him again for my math classes.
Overall, very good professor. Uses his own handouts as a text, and does most of the examples in it in class. Also very helpful during office hours. Do the homework and you'll be fine on the tests. Don't skip class, you'll miss very important lecture notes you'll need to study.
Very conceptual, doesn't put up with any guff and expects you to know your fundamentals. Hw is not graded and he gives hand outs before exams to help you prepare. He wants you to do well but there are no gimmes here. Take Bachman if you want to learn conceptually and if you payed attention in your past calculus don't take him if you're a slacker.
I had Professor Bachman over the Summer term of 2010. He is by far the best math professor I've had. I am currently taking him for Calculus 3 and I love how conceptual he is. He definitely is an excellent mathematician.
Professor Bachman has an excellent understanding of the material and tries to help his students understand "why" Calculus makes sense and not just memorizing how to solve equations. He uses his own material in areas he feels the book may be inadequate, and tries to help us visualize what is happening. He is more concerned with ideas than answers.
Honestly, his lectures are a bit boring, but he's very conceptual. He teaches the why's to everything. He hands out a study guide prior to the tests and they usually contain the same types of problems. Homework isn't mandatory, but if you want an A, you'll do it for practice. His grade is based on three tests(2/3) and a final(1/3).
Bachman is awesome. One of the few good math teachers at UNLV. I came into this class ready to change majors if i didnt pass. He helped me understand the topics clearly in this class. He stutters a lot but still able to get point across.
I struggled a lot with calc before, but thanks to his class I have a little more clarity over the subject. His study guides are very similar to his tests, so make sure you know everything he puts on there! Lectures can feel like he's rambling on, but he sometimes adds in something lightly funny or two to liven up the class.
I took this class summer 2011. I had a difficult time with calc before this class. But he emphasizes the basic tools needed to succeed in calc. He doesn't collect hw, but it does help to do it. He also gives study guides before each test, so make sure you do them.
Here what u do buddy: do all the study guides before exams, not necessary homework don't have to show up or just sleep in class, since his voice is so soothing pretty much master homework and study guide will give u an A
He tests your algebra in his tests and quizes. He does skips sections in the book and try to be more conceptual rather than doing examples or proving theorems. Just do his packets that will get you an A. Last thing to say, make sure you have a good background in Algebra.
He doesn't give out study guides anymore. He wasn't helpful when I came into office hours too. Its hard to pay attention in class because he talks so quietly and writes so small. Don't take him.
I don't know what happened to him in the last few years. He's constantly grumpy, tests are more about algebra than calculus, and he explains things so unclearly that people ask me for help after classes. I HAVE NO CALCULUS EXPERIENCE, and I explain things better than him. Even if you care about math like me, this joker will make you hate it.
Tests are straightforward and are very similar to the homework and study guides. Grading on the tests is very generous. The tests are short though, so a few errors can reduce your grade a lot. Extra credit on the tests for all except the final. Good lectures and overall a good class.
Worst professor ever. Do not take him.
Bachman is an old school professor that makes his expectations clear from the beginning. His lectures are intuitive and he skips around, teaching only what basics of calculus you should know. He actually is extremely helpful if you go to his office hours. Exams are short and just like study guide. Good students get good grades. Period.
Such an awful teacher. Overcomplicates his explanations and speaks so softly/writes small and messy you can barely understand him. He's very inconsistent at grading and his whole system is stupid and sets you up to fail. I had to teach myself calculus and felt my grades were unfairly reflected because of his ridiculous grading system.
If you've taken a calc class before, this class may be OK for you. If you haven't, you'll be teaching yourself. I was dependent upon a tutor to teach me calculus and still struggled. He's great at overcomplicating explanations, spending time on criticizing how messed up our education system is. Expects everyone to be very good at algebra.
Bachman overcomplicates his lessons, but his exam study guides are very helpful and almost exactly mimics what is on his exams. He tells you clearly what he expects. He just doesn't teach very well.
You need to have calc experience and actually be really good at calc before taking this class. The grading system is harsh. Bachman is strict and tends to make the class harder than it should be due to his grading system.
I do not know why he got rated 3. I would never take him again! A lot of people dropped the class after the first exam. My advisor even told me that many people fail this class. I hope another professor teaches this subject.
Absolutely horrible. Went to his office hours for help and told me to just drop the class because I didn't understand. Refused to help with any questions I had. Test 1 rolls around and I get a zero on it. A ZERO. I'm a math major and have never once gotten less than a C on a test. Avoid this guy at all costs.
Just don't take this guy, very rude, very mean, very unhelpful, VERY VERY hard to understand, not there for you when you need him.
Really enjoyed Bachman. Got high A's on the first two tests, and a B on the final (because I stopped paying attention towards the end of the semester). He is fantastic at explaining the concepts (almost to the point where you want to tell him to stop). By far the best math professor I've had at UNLV.
Really great 351 teacher! 3 tests your entire grade but he gives extra credit quizzes at the beginning of many classes. The material is refreshingly simple and fun. A basic mastery was enough for me to get an A in the class!
He is very russian aka hard to understand. His lectures are all about explaining the back story to why things are the way they are and he doesn't provide many examples to work with for homework. The discussion class attached to this is actually where I learned the material. The only reason needed to go to class is to get the worksheets assigned...
Heavy accent, mumbles his words, skips steps. Expects you to be a genius so he does not explain things clearly. You will learn mostly in the discussion class.
He doesn't post anything online including grades which is frusterating. He only tells you the HW in class so if you skip, there is no way of knowing the HW. He rants a lot, and at times he can be hard to understand with his accent. Overall, I would take him again. Final isn't cumulative, but I had to teach myself via youtube often.
This guy is not trying to fail you. There are three tests, each worth 1/3 of your grade. Questions on the exam are like the practice test questions, so practice. He is a VERY generous grader! A 55% is a C in his class, If you fail this class, it's your fault.
first test is hard . has nothing to do with homework or notes. its all up to you!!!!!!
"I don't want to see THREE pages of IN-compre-hensible garbage!" This quote from him made my semester :D He is a legit math person. Although your grade is solely determined by test, it is far easier than the homework he assigns and he's not looking to fail. I thought the difficulty2 but everyone's different, so I put it at 3 to be conservative.
Bachman is a great professor. Lectures are clear and his accent is easily adaptable. "Oh... you make joke" was his comment to someone being sarcastic during class and the whole class burst out laughing. He really is an easy going guy, provided you give your best attempt to learn. Don't go to him for answers, go for a new way to learn math.
Definitely knows his stuff but there's a few things you need to know before taking him 1) His Russian accent can be hard to understand at times 2) 3-4 tests equally weighted that determine your grade 3) Sometime in the semester, he will definitely rip into your class about lacking fundamentals in math If you study, keep up with hw, you'll do fine
I recently took Bachman this past summer, 2019. His grading scale is based on three tests, each 1/3 of your grade. For the sake of my credibility I got 100% on all three. He expects you to have a deep understanding of algebra. If you do not understand the material you need to do the hw! Tests are predictable and based on the hw and study guide.
Hes rude. Student asked a question and he said, hes westing his time. Hes very unclear of what hes saying. Uncoordinated, and unavailable outside of class room.
In this professor's class for only less than four weeks into the semester. He seems knowledgeable of the subject, however is extremely impatient with students. I went to see him in his office hours and he got angry over something not being printed out. I asked him to check my work and he said "this is garbage I don't want to see it".
Yes, Gennady Bachman can be rude sometimes but he is definitely one of the best math teachers out there. He can decompose a really hard topic to something even a kid can understand. I would definitely recommend him because he makes it so easy to understand. I get that he is rude sometimes but if you give him a legitimate question, he will answer it
He's passionate & knowledgeable about what he teaches. However due to this he tends to go pretty fast over the course content (don't slack). To add to that, nothing in his class is graded except for 3 tests over the course of the semester, so you're going to have to be conscious about everything. Tests are predictable & short, graded forgivingly.
One of the rudest professors I've ever encountered. Felt like if I didn't understand a part of his lecture, I couldn't ask a question or else he'd be ill-mannered about it. Always seemed knowledgeable about the subject, but was never approachable about the content. I'd recommend taking his class as a last resort if you want to learn the content.
As a person he is whatever but I respect his way of teaching. Compared to the rest of the math department, he is imo the best math teacher. I love the way he grades, 3 tests each 33%. Doesn't give homework but gives example problems with clear given solutions that reflect exactly into the tests. He knows what to teach and how to teach it.
Look I suck at math and calc makes me cry, but call this man santa clause cause he's the most generous man in the world. Each test is 6 questions long and theres 3 of them, the 1st one I got one question completely right and he give me a 50% and the 2nd I barely got 3 right & he gave me a 83%. If you set up the problem correctly, he'll give points.
Class isn't too bad. Goes through textbook/worksheets to guide lectures. Do multiple practice problems in class. ONLY GRADED ON 3 TESTS, NO HW GRADE! Tests are only 6 questions that are very similar to lecture & HW problems. Make sure you format answer how he does in lectures & HW to get maximum points. Easy C, little harder to get an A. STUDY!
His lectures are clear and he trys to answer everyones questions. He gives homework which you dont have to turn in but it does help to study. Olny 3 exams each worth 1/3 of your grade. Exams are just like the lecture and homework problems and gives partial credit as long as you show your work. One of the few good math professors at UNLV.
Focuses on improving students' understanding of math rather than merely teaching them the required material. Lecturing format is organized and clear.
Dr. Bachman is a good professor who explains concepts clearly. I don't know what some people are in here talking about him being rude or impatient with students. Many people in my class (including me) asked very stupid questions and he was patient with all of us and tried his best to answer him. Your grade is just three tests, but they are easy
really amazing prof. Had him for online summer 4wk session. If you're not good at math, he will break down the course and make sure you understand it. Only graded off 3 tests. Lots of practice problems if you need more help. Attendance is not required but highly recommended. He will help you no matter what, ASK QUESTIONS!! and take him please :)
the teacher has a heavy accent and bumble a lot. The only way that i pass that class was because i had already took calc on high school. I try to understand the way that he teach but i end up getting more confuse. If you choose to have this profesor, you will have to use the book for further understanding of the content. The test are really short
He was okay, wouldn't recommend unless you like teaching yourself - he skips a lot of steps and has a heavyish accent. Also very inconsistent grader and teacher (super tough on me and refused to provide answers meanwhile he was so "sweet" to other students). Only plus was there was no homework assignments/quizzes, only exams (3).
The only grades were 3 exams which are super easy if you know how to do the homework. Probably the easiest math class ive ever taken.
Bachman's 182 class is pretty good as long as you have the concepts down. Like the other ratings stated, he does skim over steps during his lectures, so I would recommend going over the concepts again with YouTube videos. The hw questions he assigns are similar to the test questions and his class was pretty enjoyable
Graded by 3 tests which are easy if you know how to do the HW. Didn't just read off the textbook like most math profs here. Had prerecorded lectures which were succinct. If you do the HW and watch the lectures, not too difficult class. HW is testbook questions + is optional. Provides solutions with each HW. Great professor
Explains things very well
Dr. Bachman is a pleasure to have as a professor. His lectures are so thorough and there is an emphasis on the intuition behind the mathematics (because the rigor will naturally follow). He's the ONLY professor I've had since we've gone remote who actually puts in the effort to teach. That's saying something about the state of the math department.
"By the power vested in us by our intuition..." Professor Bachman is the best professor I've EVER had. I soaked up his lectures and thoroughly enjoyed the mathematics. He's phenomenal at decomposing complex topics and making them easier for students to learn. I would take him again, any day of the week.
Online course with this professor was ok. He is a funny professor and puts time into his lectures. Only graded by 3 tests, but he gives credit wherever he sees fit, even if you get the wrong answer. Pretty straight forward course, but would recommend another professor if you want points elsewhere.
Had Dr. Bachman during covid remotely, and he handled it very well. His lectures were perfectly understandable and I never felt overwhelmed. Graded on 3 tests, and these tests had study guides that reflected very close to the real thing, so no surprises. Homework is assigned, but not mandatory, I did most problems if I felt I needed practice. 10/10
having Dr. Bachman as a professor was a pleasure he is hands down the best math teacher I ever had. he explains the concept very clear. the overall grades were based on 3 exams he does gives Homeworks and answer keys for practice purposes. if you follow the lecture and do the homework exercises it's an easy A
His class is based on 3 exams for your total grade. His tests are very similar to the homework problems, so he has reasonable expectations. My only critique with this professor is he did not really explain topics in detail. I left this class feeling I hadn't learned much from it, I just knew enough to do the homework and pass the tests.
Graded on 3 tests, all of which are very similar to his homework. Lectures don't go too in-depth since there are a number of topics to cover, making the overall class easier. Look over his test reviews beforehand and you'll do great. Focus on analysis & process rather than a specific answer and you'll get most of the points on the 6 question tests.
I really recommend this course! Grading is based on 3 exams, the study guides are based on the homework, and the exam is based on the study guide. Also, the study guide covers more than what will be on the exams, so you are always set if you complete the study guide. Overall, really straightforward, and not a lot of studying.
If you are not good at math, take this professor. Math is my worst subject and I got an A. He gives partial credit on exams and there is no homework. 5 weeks summer session was pure hell but if you must take calculus, take it with Dr. Bachman. Generous grader and funny too.
I liked his overall approach and philosophy to learning but I had a bad experience with this professor. He yelled at me second class for not knowing the "right way" to solve a problem BY NAME and continued to talk about me for 20 minutes and mention me later in class. He was also hard to understand and not tech savvy so please avoid.
Take Bachman if you can, better than almost everyone in the math department. He doesn't assign busy work and only gives homework to emphasize the things learned in class. The quizzes are gimme points, and his exams have 5 questions, all of which can be done with no calculator. His grade scale makes a 55% a passing score, you will pass his classes.
Teaches more conceptually than pragmatically. Expects you to already MASTER algebra. He is a great calc professor for PROACTIVE students ALREADY adequate with math. STRENUOUS summer lectures to sit through, but he is a GENEROUS grader. If you know the setup to the problems but mess up your math, you will get at least a B. Has a curved grading scale
Dr.Bachman's lectures are very good however, his exams are hard. He is easy an ok grader he does give partial credit. Although, he assigns homework its not collected for a grade. To pass this class you have to study a lot especially the homework problems. Very difficult material so go to office hours early on
took math 181 over summer, attend lectures and do your homework and you will pass
The grade only consisted of three midterms. None of the homework was graded. I really loved the lectures as he showed more efficient ways of conducting math problems. Exams are fair nothing crazy appears out of the blue, as if you review the homework you'll pass the exams. Love that the homework isn't graded since I can choose when to do it.
Bachman's lectures are engaging, and he explains concepts well. Though exams are challenging, he gives partial credit. Using Unstuck ai alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the material.
Dr. Bachman is one of the best math professors at UNLV. His lectures are engaging, and his exams (at least for this semester) were take home. Even if his exams weren't take home, they would still be rather easy because they model after the homework. Take Dr. Bachman so you can focus more on learning than on trying to muster a passing grade.
