fun professor. talks fast, but he's a lot of fun.
hes very easy in comparison to other profs but bc you learn nothing from him, hes hard bc you know nothing..
not very demanding, but horrible at explaining the material. if you are not already knowledgeable of the material, you will have a tough time learning from him
bad at explaining, still tests on the material that hasnt been explained well :-( try to get another chem professor
He was one of the WORST professors I have ever had. Should learn how to teach. What a waste of money and time.
Davies is a great guy, definetly an entertaining lecture. BUT its true that you dont learn much more from him than you do on your own. As long as you keep up on your own outside of class, attending lectures isnt drastically necessary.
Dr. Davies is a good man. It is clear that he cares about all of his students. He tries to make his class interesting. I think I learned more with him b/c he makes an effort to hold our attention. Others should take a lesson from him.
Going to lectures will make your life so much easier. I went to half the lectures fall semester and got a C, but went to all the lectures for chm214, and got an A. Dr. Davies and the ta's are always willing to help and he is so fun in class.
Also, he learns all hundred and some of his students names and things about each student. He emails a little too often, but he definatly cares about his students and shows a genuine love for teaching.
the guy is hilarious. very animated and good teacher as well. tries hard to make everyone get an A
His lectures are entertaining but difficult to learn anything in. The TA's are so helpful anyone who puts in some effort should be able to get a decent grade. Much more fun than other chem teachers
Davies is an excellent professor. He is not unncessiarly easy or hard for that matter, if you study you will do well. But he keeps the classes entertaining and makes a valiant effort to get to know all 100+ students.
one of the best professors i have had at NU. funny and animated
I learned nothing new in his class. I didn't go to class once I discovered it was not helpful. Easy grader, super nice guy. The book he wrote is the most confusing book ever, so if you need to learn, borrow a friend's book.
one of the best professors i have had anywhere, made my worst class into my best class and ended up with an A.
Go to the lectures and you'll get an A. Hard to follow in class, but if you review for quizzes they're not terrible.
Makes chemistry very interesting. Funny and genuinly a nice guy. His tests are tricky, but if you go to lecture you'll do just fine. Have him as your professor!
davies is pretty much the most beautiful man i have ever seen. his tests = death. he tells silly stories about ducks without underwear and the smell of goats.
Cute old British guy, but usually the lectures aren't too helpful. If you have Heather Brodkin for a TA you'll be fine
doesnt clearly explain material in lectures, but you get good hints on midterms from the practice midterms and TAs so it's easy to get an A if you put effort in.
Dr. Davies is a great guy who tries his best to get his students engaged in the class. He wants everyone to do well. His exams aren't bad, just make sure you know how to do every problem from the review sheet then you'll be guaranteed a A/B. Overall not bad!
first test- wicked hard....second test- wicked easy....final- compilation of the two tests, some questions are identical
He is awesome!! One of the best professors I have had. He is not easy but he is very helpful and tries to get everyone to get an A!
he's probably the best intro to chem. teacher you'll find at neu (that's not saying much), but don't bother asking him questions because you'll never understand what he's talking about. his TAs are AWESOME. go to them for everything; their study sessions are the only thing that helped me get an A in that class.
A really nice guy. I recommend getting a chemistry for dumbies book to coincide with your chem. book. If you do this, you'll get an easy A!
It's really easy to get an A in the class even if you do poorly on the exams. He gives a lot of room for extra credit. The practice tests are VERY similar to actual exams. He's a nice guy, but doesn't explain things too well. Labs & recitation become an influencial part of the grade so just do well in those areas.
i hate chemistry. but i looove professor davies. he actually makes the class fun. he really tries to let everyone do good in the class, he helps you as much as he can. hes an awesome guy, very funny and nice
Best teacher ever. Tries to make chemistry interesting. His exams are almost like his practice exams (only switching numbers around, asking opposite from practice, etc). Lecture quizzes are easy boost points. Lab/REC TA's are okay depending which one you get. Lab and Recitation are easy for boosting your grade. A little effort will get you an A. =)
Probably the easiest class I have ever taken. Material is covered at an amazingly slow pace. With all the bonus points, if you have any intelligence at all you will have 100+. He tends to speak in metaphors but answers questions very concisely.
The best chemistry teacher I've ever had. Not only he explains everything clearly, he also answers everyone's questions. He allows note card for the midterm and for the final. His exams are very similar to his practice tests. He also curves very well and gives extra credit. If u have Heather Brodkin as your TA, you're all set!
He is the nicest man and one of the best teachers I've ever had. I've actually learned a lot of useful information from him. Lab and recitation counts for a lot, so do well in those areas. His tests challenge you, but if you study and know the practice exam you will do fine. He really wants you to do well and gives LOTS of extra credit!
Davies is an easy grade, esp for chem. Nicest guy in the world... only problem is staying awake during class
He's probably the easiest teacher for chemistry. The tests are really easy if you understand the practice exam he gives you before each mid-term. The questions are pretty much verbatim on the actual test he gives you, he just changes the numbers, and he lets you use a notecard to help you during the tests! He is really boring during lecture though.
i suck at chem, but i love this guy. he's so sweet it makes going to lecture less painful. also the tests are easy, practice tests are really good at telling you what you have to know, his ta's are awesome and he gives lots of extra credit. try to go to class for the lecture quizzes, they add up to a lot of extra credit.
He has very boring lectures but has very easy exams. His exams are pretty much identical to the practice exams he gives us. He just changes the numbers and the wording so pay attention when he goes over the practice exams. He also lets you bring a notecard to his exams. They come in handy during the final (which is also like the practice exams).
I ve had numerous chem teachers and not one of them has measured up to proff. davies. He took the time every mourning to learn every kids name, and then became a friend along with being a great teacher. In the beging i was working as hard as i could and getting As but by the end of the semester i slacked off a lot and still recieved my A for the yr.
Sweet old man, just wants you to do well. The first day of class he said 50% of us would get As and he was right. Go to lecture just for the lecture quizzes, they're easy points. Lab is easy, recitation is helpful. Tests are just like the practice ones. Easy A.
At the beginning of class, he gave a big soothing speech about how we were all going to do well and he liked each one of us. But then when I asked questions in class, he would raise his voice and continue talking over me. I came up with questions after class but he wouldn't listen, and so would talk without answering my question. Frustrating.
The greatest guy you'll ever meet! Too bad he can't really teach. You may have to teach yourself, but tests are easy so you'll get an A or B.
Great
He is one of the best professors i have ever had. He is sweet and always there to help. I went to him for help and he helped me extremely. He is the teacher you want.
Such a cute, nice professor! Very sweet, very helpful. Focus on studying practice tests and you'll do great!!
Nicest guy on campus and genuinely wants his students to do well. However, you will probably not learn much, as he is NOT a good teacher. Thankfully, tests are not that hard and based on the practice tests. Just study those and you'll be fine. We did have one test that many did bad on, but then he just gave us extra credit to do. What a guy!
he is a gentleman and a wonderful teacher and person
Extremely easy teacher.
one of the most lovable professors at the university. study practice tests and you're golden. though going to class is quite pointless...he's the man
Amazing teacher, wrote the book, extremely helpful, wants everyone to get an A and 50% of the class does. He's a cute old man just bustling with enthusiasm and lame jokes. Everyday is a joy to be in class.
Every time I go to class, I am reminded about how I wish this man was my grandfather. He is absolutely precious, but better than that he knows his stuff. Amazingly, he keeps kids coming to his huge lectures, even though its obvious that you can still do well without coming to class.
He's the sweetest man ever. Very caring and genuinely wants you to do well. Because be wrote the text book, he doesn't really go too much in depth in lecture; just vague overviews. DO THE PRACTICE TESTS & STUDY THEM! Don't do lecture quizzes for ppl who skip, he catches ppl and will give you both zeros for EVERY LQ.
Davies is the kind of man that would make a wonderful grandfather but is not a good teacher. Sweet man, but you don't really learn much. You'll feel it if you have someone else for Chem 2.
Sit in the front of the class, listen to everything he says, and do the class exercises along with him (calculator out) and you'll actually learn something. He's a cute old man, we all love him, but you have to really pay attention to learn how to apply the equations. Gen Chem 2 is much harder than Gen Chem 1.
i took both chem 1 and chem 2 of his. He was so good in chem 1, but in chem 2, he kept making mistakes, and made the class more confusing. Try your best DO NO ASK HIM QUESTION!!! He is not as nice as he looks like!!!
HARDLY LEARNED A THING BUT DID WELL. I went to class for lecture quizzes only and got a A-. Horrible teacher but the nicest, easiest chem teacher ever. I learned more in recitation and lab which help your grade alot. MEMORIZE practice tests but beware of tricks!! NICE, NICE man.
Professor Davies is by far the best professor ever! He made gen chem 1 and 2 fun, his lectures were interesting and he is extremely helpful. I wish I had him for every class!
I thought he was clear in his examples and gave so much extra credit its hard to fail unless you don't try. His practice exams are pretty much identical to his real exams.
Accent aside, he teaches quite well. Its just a matter of being familiar with the material he's teaching before-hand.
Quite the character! He knows information well and if you attend class he will keep you entertained. However, skipping multiple classes will put you at a disadvantage and you will need to catch up! However quizzes are completed with anyone around you in class and 2 midterms are short and pretty easy if you study. Good professor!
He is the worst teacher at the school... people had success if they had him for chem 1, I did not have him for chem 1. His tests are very similar to the practice exams... except trickier. He is soo nice, but horrible at explaining things. I got D's on the mid terms and finals but ended up with a B in the class, so he does want you to do well...
Easy A. Doesn't teach well but you will be entertained. If you're serious about chemistry, choose a different professor.
Prof. Davies is awesome, a nice person and a good lecturer. He took time to help me on the side, and listened to my interests, and helped me to the point I could help other students with a difficult assignment. He knew of Alexander (Sasha) Shulgin which is a plus and told me not all chemists are boring. Good instructor to take for chemistry.
Great! Just great! Can't say more! I am gonna miss his classes a lot!
Sweetest old man at NU! class is super easy, Davies is very friendly and eager to help students outside of class. If you do the practice exams and you aren't a completely incompetent you WILL do well.
He is the best professor ever! He is an adorable old, funny British man who makes class as entertaining as possible. Tests are jokingly easy. Take him no matter what!!!!
Students with a basic background in chemistry will do fine. Whereas people like myself who have none will probably struggle. He is a jolly nice guy in class, but is not at all helpful outside of class and can be pretty condescending if you don't understand something. Very demotivating.
While he is a sweet man who truly means well he is very lacking as a professor. In lecture he will go off on a tangent (cute story) and wont teach the material. If you have a bit of background knowledge & do the practice tests chances are you will pass. You will not be learning anything, which is worrisome for when you go on to other chem classes.
Davies is SUCH a nice old man. However, he does not teach well at all. Even if you show up to class (which is not mandatory at all), you rarely understand what is going on. The only way you somewhat understand what's going on is from recitation (which you really should go to, as there's quizzes each week) and if you've taken AP Chem in hs.
Often, lectures were confusing, and he tended to talk in circles.
Lectures are often confusing, and he tends to talk in circles.
He is a adorable old man. He is not explaining things very well but at least he is funny. The exams are short but somewhat tricky. It's great that he gives practice midterm that is so alike to the midterm exam.
He's the sweetest little old British man but he's so difficult to hear and understand. Going to class is fruitless, save for the many quizzes you will take. Recitation will be your savior. Tests can be ridiculously easy or absolutely frustrating because he did not cover the material well.
He's a really nice person but doesn't teach at all. His exams are really short so even a few mistakes will cause you to go down to a B; plus multiple choice does not allow for partial credit. I wouldn't recommend especially if you have no knowledge of chemistry and if you are planning to take higher level chemistry classes.
This guy is a terrible teacher. He doesn't teach at all, and he goes off on random tangents during class. He also wastes at least 10-15 minutes at the beginning of class calling people out to introduce themselves. He doesn't write anything on the board. There are no visuals to follow when taking this class. Switch out ASAP.
Professor Davies is a great person but not the best professor. If you go to him he'll definitely help you, but otherwise you are on your own. You only have to go to class because of lecture quizzes but in my case lecture did not help much. Study the Practice MidTerms and read the book, if you do this you can definitely get an A. Good luck!
I really enjoyed the class. I struggled at first with the test format. 25 question tests is rough, but if you can do the practice midterms, you'll be fine. Ended up with a 97, definitely manageable.
He lies when he says you'll all get an A in his class. Even if you've had chem before his class, he'll leave you more confused than ever. If it wasn't for my TA and maybe the textbook, I would not have passed. If you want to learn, work your butt off in Toher's class instead. It's worth it because you will understand it.
He is a very nice guy, but unfortunately a terrible professor. Make sure you go to recitation, do homework, and look at the textbook if you want to pass the class. He honestly just rambles in class and you never learn anything. Practice mid terms are given are very similar to actual exam.
Do the practice exams, attend recitation, and don't be afraid to get a tutor. His lectures are confusing but he likes to give one question quizzes randomly so it's important to go to class. If you want to pass, you're going to have to teach yourself a lot of material.
Not super helpful, hard to get an A.
He's so cute but his lectures don't always make sense. Easy class--he wants you to succeed. You get unlimited tries for the online homework. For the final, if your grade is higher than one of your previous tests he'll replace that test grade with the final's grade.
Incredibly sweet old man. If you put in the work, you will get an A. He wants nothing more than for you to do well and love Chemistry as much as he does!
He is such a sweet man, but he is an absolutely terrible teacher. Most of the time in lecture I can't follow what he's saying because he's just spouting nonsense. Recitation is a lifesaver and so is reading the book. The exams are tough because he doesn't really teach well, but if you put in work outside of class and do your homework, you're fine.
His class is extremely easy, but his lectures are unclear and not helpful. I went to class only for the pop lecture quizzes, but now that they are online you can have someone share the code with you and do them from elsewhere. The textbook is not helpful. Just know how to do the practice midterms forward and backward and you will get an A.
One of the nicest people I've ever met. Loves his students and evident that he loves Chemistry. However, he's a terrible teacher. Hard to follow in class due to his random stories (They are funny though). Tries to explain questions leading to more confusion. Better off reading the book, attending recitation, and doing the practice midterms.
Davies is a very nice man, but I really don't feel like I actually learned anything in the class. If you plan on actually using the chemistry you learn in gen chem 1 later on in your major (like if you have to take organic chem) you should really choose a different professor so you actually learn the basics. The recitations are super helpful.
Davies is a cute old man. He seems to love his job and what he does; however, I don't think I learned much from him. His TAs were more helpful. However, Davies allows a notecard for each exam - so you get to write whatever you want on it and bring it in for a cheat sheet. He began doing online pop quizzes which you can do from your dorm.
Davies is such a nice man who really loves chemistry. However his lectures are really unclear and make it hard to pay attention. As someone who has always struggled with chem, the bulk of my learning came from the weekly recitations and outside tutoring. I left this course feeling unprepared for my following chem course.
Prof. Davies is very sweet and makes an effort to meet every one of his students outside of class. His midterms are very easy, and he provides practice midterms. However, his lectures are often confusing and you must be prepared to learn much of the material on your own or in recitation. Lecture quizzes are given about once a week in class.
Sweet guy, terrible teacher. I ended up skipping more than I went because going would just confuse me. If you get him, show up for the first week and then just log onto the socrative app from your bed at the end of each class time to take the one question quiz. Get a good TA (not Nick) and they will teach you whatever you need to know.
Professor Davies is so sweet but he isn't the best teacher. His lectures are very confusing and he teaches without writing anything on the board. His midterms are usually very similar to the practice midterms and if you understand those you'll be fine, but you have to read the textbook.
He means well, but his lectures are confused and not structured. Take advantage of recitations and read the textbook! It's the only way you'll learn. He gives 3 tests all semester, allows you to have a notecard, and sends out a very similar practice test for each. The tests are short, so make sure you know everything or your grade will drop.
He's sweet enough, but a really bad teacher. Your grade in the class is based almost entirely off of three midterms and a final exam, and he's really serious about no make-ups, even in extreme circumstances which was really frustrating. He's a sweet man, and definitely cares about his students, but not quite to the extent that a lot of people think
Kind exterior, during office hours is arrogant. Use peer to peer tutoring if you aren't good with chem. He will not teach in class. Doesn't use powerpoints or board to teac at all, just talks about personal life for an hour. Gives wrong answers and teaches wrong concepts. Continuously gave us wrong answer for questions. Use peer to peer tutoring.
Davies is a sweet man, however he does not teach at all. The lectures were more so confusing than helpful. Review recitation ws and actually do the homework online. Go through the practice tests and identify what needs to be practiced. Final takes some questions from the practice exams and midterms, so study those.
Extremely hard to follow, disorganized and sporadic lectures. Beware, and plan on teaching yourself chemistry.
