Posts everything on the internet. Very helpful.
soooooooooooooooooooooo hottttttttttttttt
good prof
Extremly good at his job.. teaches with clarity and is funny too.. seems like a chill person outside of class too and understanding his material through examples is easYY!!!
Loved his class. He's so chill, and so funny. And sooooo adorable!
He posts everything online and reads his slides word for word, so going to class isn't necessary. Midterm comes from his notes and the text book, so you should probably read the book. Sometimes kind of boring, but he tries to be funny. He seems like a nice guy.
He tries really hard to be funny....he's not. His true passion is computers, robots AND world of warcraft. If you actually want to learn about psych, don't take his class. His exams are tricky also don't be fooled, he is not attractive. He talks a whole week on robots and history. His class notes don't really follow the textbook.
His exams are completely designed to trick you. They don't reward the person who studies. "None of the above" is an option for every question, and is actually the answer for a lot!He refuses to let you keep the exams because he's too lazy to think of new questions and he doesn't post practice exams online so you're essentially blind going into it.
Ok prof, disliked his exam questions some of the questions can be better phrased, and the none of the above answers, hate that. He can have his funny moments but is repetitive and can dwell on an idea way too long.
He's actually really engaging in class but it's so hard to pay attention when he reads word for word off of the slides that you can get from eclass. I thought he was hilarious, but his exams are stupid. None of the above is an option for everything and he words things really weird. I really did like him though
USELESS PROF EVER! He is most def. not hot! His teaching is poor. He tries to be funny. Attendance is not mandatory as class note are online! WASTE OF MY TIME!
He's a funny and engaging prof but all of his notes are online and he doesn't add much to them in his lectures. Many concepts on his tests are only in the textbook so reading it is MANDATORY. His exams are poorly worded and designed to trick students. None of the above is always one of the options and it is very frustrating
He trys to be a good teacher. however, the exam is tough. no practice problem, all questions on the exam have none of above. this tricks students. Moreover, i am not sure what he really want to us learn trough out the course.he spend too much time on the history part, but little on the later chapter.he is one of the reasons i do not tale further on PSY
Excellent teacher in terms of explaining concepts and trying to get his students involved, even with a group of 300+ students. Makes things interesting, though his tests are tricky (answer E is always "None of the above", and most questions are critical response type). Read the textbook, about 25% of each of his tests are relevant to text material.
His notes are online, and he kinda just reads off of them. It's still good to attend to class cuz he explains his diagrams, which you might not be able to understand on your own. His exams are tricky and poorly worded. Sometimes he sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about..
He was a funny guy & class was often interesting because of videos & other learning supplements. However, he took a long time for the history section, & little time on the more important chapters, & the videos weren't always necessary. He read through slides, & tests were slightly confusing, but somewhat fair if you knew the notes very well.
Class was extremely boring and attendance is definitely not mandatory as he reads off of his slides he posts online. Gets caught off guard when students asks questions and responds with an 'i dont know.' Textbook is probably better than attending class..
Loved him! Super helpful outside of class. He read our essays and sent them back before they were due so we would know where we needed to improve. Gave huge hints as to what was on the exams. Gave information in a very comprehensive way. Surprisingly, I learned a ton in this class!
awesome class, great teacher. eaasyyy exams, beyond easy!. he uses straight examples he says in class, the question u guys come up with in class he uses on final word for word. read the textbook u have to its not that bad if u spread it out. i was a little hesitant at first knowing it was his first 104 class at UofA but he- JUST TAKE HIM!
Awesome prof, exams were fairly easy if u read his notes, had a bunch of in class demos to help solidify concepts. Answered questions to the best of his ability, very helpful. definitely reccomend
Very interesting classes. Wording on the midterm and final was a little tricky in some places, and it is very important to read the text book, as quite a few questions were not covered in class. Still important to attend class, on the last day he let us write several questions that were followed word for word on the final.
Awesome class and I am not even interested in psych. But tests are a lot harder than you expect, must read text
Overall, this was a very interesting class. Make sure that you have time that you can devote to reading the textbook and learning the theories and concepts in the textbook. The exams are a combo of the notes and the text. Geoff is very helpful if you have any questions. Make sure you keep up with the research participation and info lit! Great prof!
Hollis is a funny prof and a fairly entreating guy, but his class was unorganized. Way to much time was spent on history of psych and the exams were poorly worded. He is all over the place with the class, but all the notes are posted online so its not to bad to catch up. His tests are poorly worded and out to trick you. you have to know your stuff
He is a nice and funny guy, but in terms of teaching not my favourite prof. He spends too much time with the beginning of the course and as you get further in the course you get less details. He incorporates funny videos in his teaching not helping much in his exams which have ALOT of none of the above as answers, very confusing and poorly worded.
He's a funny professor, shows interesting videos from pop culture. His tests are designed to trick you, 'None of the above' is an option for every question. And it is clear he doesn't proof-read his exams as there are numerous grammar and wording mistakes. Good prof overall.
Great prof and a nice guy, really funny. There was a midterm and a final, covering material from the text and his notes which are really good and he posts them online. Exams are not that bad at all if you know what you're doing! He let us write questions for the final and all in all if you do what you should it is a very easy A. Take it with Hollis
He is awesome! Really funny, really interesting. He made a class that could have been very boring very enjoyable. The exams are easy and fair, although some of the questions are on textbook material not covered in class. My only complaint is that every question on the exam had a "none of the above" answer, which really throws you off. Great prof!
i found him very helpful in class and outside of class. would always give detailed answers in emails. exams were fair if you studied for it. more class notes questions than textbook material. attendance is not mandatory. marking duration were always inconsistent. 1st exam took 20 days, 2nd took 1 week and final took over a month to get back.
Nice dude. Funny, interesting, kept the class entertained. Way too much useless information, and his details get less and less as the term goes on and he realizes he's so far behind. Nice guy, easy tests if you study, I recommend if you are trying to boost GPA with 100 level course. If you actually want to learn, I don't recommend him at all...
Funny and interesting. Easy A. For exams, it helps to read or skim the textbook since a chunk is on "textbook" only material (Maybe this seems obvious, but I know there were a lot of people who didn't do it).
I thought as a prof he left much to be desired, although going to class is important (questions on the exams pertain to class only info). My biggest problem was with trying to understand what his test questions were actually asking, but he was decent for all intents and purposes.
He's a pretty good teacher. Very funny. His cheerful attitude makes the class interesting. I am looking forward to studying from him only in my coming years.
super hipster! cool teacher
Pretty good prof. Really good at explaining topics in class, I easily remember his lecture notes because he does lots of class discussions and activities to really clarify them. At least skimming the textbook is mandatory. I didn't do as well on the midterm as i expected but other than that good prof!
Great Prof! Would definitely recommend him!! Has great class discussions and uses excellent examples to get the class engaged. Midterm was a little harder than expected, however gives quizes to boost your mark! textbook isn't mandatory, but i would say at least read the chapters. Easy class and very interesting!!! :) :)
I really enjoyed this prof. Class discussions are very interesting and he makes concepts easy to remember. Uses interesting youtube videos and makes up memorable scenarios. Midterm was fair and I would take another class with him forsure. I didn't attend quite a few classes but if you look over his lecture slides online you will be okay.
He's helpful and his notes are clear. The midterms and quizzes include examples he used in class, so go to class. He's funny and his examples are somewhat good, and comprehendible. His tests are pretty straightforward, you just have to know your stuff.
awesome prof. gives plenty of examples on each concept, you get a good understanding. he is funny, keeps it entertaining. tests are very fair. if you read the textbook & go to class, you'll have no issues.
Very funny. Very interesting. He keeps the students engaged by interacting with them. Loved his class! His exam contain both textbook and lecture content; so attendance is a must. Not that it's a chore going. Fantastic teacher.
Don't understand all these good ratings. The concepts of the class are simple, and his lectures are all fun and games.. but exams are full of trick questions and random textbook material. Questions are very poorly worded and have a "None of the Above" option for each one. Really frustrating. Take with someone else. Hard to get an A, easy B though..
Very poor professor. Wastes class time watching videos and talking about simple concepts, and then didn't even finish the course. Tests are 80% a joke, and 20% stupid tricky, so if you're an underachiever who just wants to pass then this is a great class for you. Still got an A but had to put in more work than OChem II and Biochem 200, ironically.
Decent prof. His tests/ quizzes are relatively easy if you read the textbook. He spends way too long on some topics meaning that we had to self teach 2 whole chapters. His lectures get very redundant however he does make some important points in class. He also shows videos which really helps cement ideas/ concepts.
Easiest A ever. I attended class, took notes on the PowerPoint he uploads to eclass, and would read through them on the bus on my way to the midterm and final. Likes to test on obscure textbook material, but without reading the text I easily got an A- on his final.
Awesome prof! He used a multitude of images and videos which I found really helpful in learning the material. Also he's probably the funniest prof I've had so far. The written response questions on the quizzes were kind of poorly structured, but there were no surprises on the exams.
The classes were VERY relaxed. He's a friendly 'cool' guy. He had pre-midterm/final tests, worth 10% each and the midterm/final worth 30% each. The tests, if you study, from his notes and the textbook, are pretty easy. Pretty easy A+ after all, though being overconfident will cost you. Study. Always a e)None of the above option by the way.
DECENT PROF. KEPT LECTURES INTERESTING BY SHOWING YOU TUBE CLIPS. SPENT TOO LONG ON THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS THOUGH THAT WERE REALLY BORING. ALTHOUGH, THE TESTS/QUIZZES WERE ALL FAIR. IF YOU STUDY THE NOTES AND READ THE TEXTBOOK ITS AN EASY A.
His exams were are fair if you read the textbook, come to class and go over the notes he provides. If you made a fair effort to learn the material it was definitely rewarded through his exams and your overall grade.
Awful prof, and completely takes away security of m.c. questions, ALL questions have "none of the above" as an answer
Loved his as a professor. Study from the textbook, and you'll pass. However, do go over his slides as he does pick questions from there to put on his quizzes and exams. Not too shabby of a prof!
My favourite prof I've had so far. Very fun to listen to and learn from. Lectures are good to attend, but the textbook is also important to review, because it will be on the tests!
I hated how his tests all the answers had none of the above.. it made me second guess myself but besides that decent prof
Good prof always willing to help.
Easy A, fun class to go to. Spreads out the grade well with 2 midterms and a pre-final. His lectures are always clear and interesting.
Super interesting and funny. Keeps lectures clear and interesting. But on his midterm and final he worded questions in weird was which made me doubt myself. Perhaps it was just an elaborate psych experiment for him to study after? Great prof though!
Really liked him. Made lectures very interesting, showed lots of clips. Had a great sense of humour and was really engaging. His teaching made things really simple, and his exams were adequate hardness, but you MUST MUST MUST read the textbook for the exams.
He is a great prof; very clear, explains concepts in great depth, and very happy to answer questions either during or after class. Exams are based on subjects only discussed in class and notes online/the textbook. soo cute!
he is super duper ATTRACTIVE! and cute haha but seriously he was a good proffesor. always making jokes, and its amazing how he is able to keep a class of like 400 students interested all the time, he super nice if you ever need help with a question dont be shy to email him, and ask him, he doesnt bite haha. he spaced out exams perfectly !
So boring, and not overly helpful. He wastes a lot of time in class on unimportant topics. I found him so hard to listen to, he didn't make it very interesting. His tests are basically just a ton of trick questions. Overall: meh
Geoff is a fantastic prof! So gorgeous and so funny! Needless to say I had a little crush on him ;) I appreciate his quirkiness, as it made class fun to go to. His exams are tough but if you review the textbook you will be good. He's so kind, helpful and adorable. I would definitely recommend taking his class, he's the best!!
super funny prof, makes class really interesting to attend, exams are all MC
The class was a waste of time, since he posted his lecture notes online and the textbook was just as helpful, with better humour. His jokes were dry, and he couldn't keep the class interested to save his life. The tests were fair and the textbook was amazing. Its not entirely his fault the class is boring, so I would recommend him, not the class.
Terrible Prof. He doesn't deserve a teaching position.
nice and funny guy but his lectures were such a drag, everyone was either skipping, sleeping, or texting. his tests are mainly based on his lecture notes but he does quiz on some textbook material! he also quizzes on important videos we watched in class
Take his class! Super easy, no homework, decent lectures with some fun humour. Tested mostly on the lectures with a few questions strictly from the textbook. He cant teach neurology so make sure you read it in the textbook!
If you want a GPA booster, take his class. If you actually want to learn Psychology, don't take him. I've been in this for 4 months and I have no idea what I learned.
My first Psyco Prof. He is fun and helpful. His class is not that hard and you can actually learn something. But if you want to get a good grade you have to read all the contexts in textbook and the ppt he post online. Great prof overall
Great prof! He is fun and makes the class interesting. I actually enrolled in his class for second semester because on the last day he gave us a few final exam questions and the answers. Fair class for first years.
Easy class if you read his lecture notes, he tells you exactly what to study. He isn't very helpful in class, he just reads the slides and his notes are all online. You don't even need to buy the textbook, I didn't use it once. Decent class though. All multiple choice tests.
Very good prof and very easy class. He does test on material covered in the text book, but all you have to do is read the chapter summary and your set. He will also test on youtube videos he shows in class. As long as you study for the exams you will do great.
He was nice, but this course was very basic, even for a 100-level course. This course probably has a quarter (content-wise) of most other courses. Exams were easy so 90 required for an A (not curved). While it's a nice GPA booster and you will do well if you read notes + textbook, and he's super nice and funny, I learned almost nothing.
very easy. I skipped most lectures and still did really well on quizzes and tests by skimming the textbook and the notes he puts online. The lectures I did attend were amusing and generally on topic. not a content heavy course. two quizzes, one midterm, and the final, all multiple choice. recommend as GPA booster.

Kinda surprised he didn't get any hotness ratings yet! But anyways his class was super easy and there wasn't that much material. He was so chill and let people just ask questions whenever they wanted and he did a lot of class experiments. Basically, this was the most stress-free class I had and probably the most enjoyable as well!
This class is really easy!! put in effort to study and its easy to pull off an a trust me.
One word : Amazing. I scored a low mark on his first quiz and I learnt from his class that life is not as easy as you think. His class pushed me to work harder for the remainder of the semester and I did very well in his class. He explains the concept quite clearly and interacts with students by asking them questions during lectures. Recommended :)
Nearly got an A but I was being an idiot myself. Great prof, hilarious guy, the word interesting is a poor choice for describing his lectures. Attending class is fun despite it being 90min long. Easy exams. Take this course for an easy mark booster.
Great prof and it was an interesting class! I only wish he covered more textbook material in class. I had to learn the hard way because I didn't realize there would be so much textbook material on the quizzes and midterms because he didn't go over it in detail in class. But other than that it was an easy class and Hollis is a fun prof!
Sometimes this class was really boring and he took way too much time doing examples but it was super easy. Just read over his powerpoints the night before the exam, most of the exam questions are straight from them.
I was dissapointed in this prof. I had heard many good things about him, but I didn't care for him myself. I don't feel that he had a good grasp of the material he was supposed to be teaching. I took this course because I have an interest in psychology, but I will never take a future psychology class from this prof again.
Worst part of this class was trying to guess what to know from the textbook. Ends up asking most questions from his notes. Don't bust your efforts on the textbook too much on the first quiz. He doesn't seem to care too much but he's a nice guy.
He asks very specific questions on his tests, so if you can memorize what you think will be on it you are better off.
Geoff is very interested in psychology. He makes the class fun and easy to follow. He posts powerpoints on eclass before he teaches that specific lesson and he gives two quizzes a midterm and a final. His tests are fair. The textbook is useful for review and the class is passable if you use the textbook and don't go to class.
I find the examples he gives in class really helpful! (Short synopsis of experiments and results.) Covers all topics in class. He's funny, clear, easy-going and cute as a button!
He's a good prof overall, but has a problem replying to emails as he never returned any of mine at all!!!
Great Prof! Made classes fun and interesting and is also such a cutie!
Not quite finished the class but unless it gets substantially harder in the 2nd half I will be getting an a+.
I enjoyed the course.
I LOVE Hollis. I took Psych 104 with him first semester and somehow ended up in his class second semester for psych 105. He is so passionate about the course so it helps make the class more enjoyable. His tests are fair just use the textbook and notes. He is also a total babe.
Took psych 104 with him, loved him there so decided to take psych 105 with him. I'm not even in science but I found that the material is very useful to know for really any field you go into. He makes nerdy jokes which I find very amusing and is a clear speaker.Attend lectures and read text night before exam and your good.If you liked bio30 take it!
Geoff is great. If you are willing to put in the work to improve your grades, he will do everything in his power to help you. He makes lectures interesting and funny. Psych is Psych, but Geoff makes it better.
There are always contents he never mentioned occur in exam. In other word, his exam is not fair and thus not easy.
Best prof ever!!!! Loved his lectures, very helpful, SO CUTE!!
He's a good instructor and his tests are fair. As long as you read the textbook, you will be fine. I enjoy his class and he makes the material interestting.
Hollis is honestly the most chill prof you could ask for. He's super funny and makes things easy to understand. He posts all his notes online so you don't really have to go to class, although I found it helpful to go. He tests on material that he doesn't cover in class that's in the textbook, so be sure to read it.
Very enthusiastic in lectures and tests are very easy. I emailed him and never got a reply and have heard the same from many other people. Other than that, he's a pretty good prof and you don't have to take notes in class because he has powerpoints pre-made.
Okay, first of all, this guys is the definition of adorable. His humor and knowledge of the field combines to make a very interesting class. His teaching style is awesome, and I greatly enjoyed his class. Exams were fair and easy if you keep up with the notes. Before the final exam, he said he liked my glasses, and I was like awyis life is good.
Worst prof ever. He doesn't even follow the textbook and his class is very boring. Very disappointed.
Pretty chill class. Studied a couple hours before each midterm, quiz and the final. Easy stuff. Curved class though so if you want that A or A- aim for a 88% or so. Geoff is a cool guy, interesting to listen to and overall would recommend the class.
As already mentioned, you have to get a high mark in order to receive an A in this class. However, the exams and quizzes were all pretty straightforward. Study his notes and read the textbook and you should be fine.
Geoff is a solid prof and he has interesting lectures. Notes are all online and he goes through each slide and explains it in class. Very low textbook use, but there are always some exam questions from the reading material,so if you're going for the A+ definitely buy it. Otherwise, don't bother. Beware: the class is bell curved so the A+/A is rare
He is a great prof! you could tell he loved teaching and made class interesting. Liked that the final wasn't cumulative rather it was 2 quizzes with the final and midterm being worth equal percents.
Curved, but very fair tests. A pre-midterm quiz, one midterm, one pre-final quiz, then the final. All non-cumulative and multiple choice. Study his slides thoroughly and read over the textbook a few times and you'll do fine. Attendance is not mandatory.
Good professor, makes Psych interesting, and uses a lot of in-class examples that are tested similarly, so attendance is mandatory.
Such a cutie! (sidenote). But honestly a wonderful prof; I thoroughly enjoyed coming to his lectures as they were full of laughter, stories and examples. He was funny, made the subject interesting and is one of the most kind professors I have had. Just awesome. PS if you want that A, you need the textbook. Definitions will be tested from it :)
A thoroughly engaging prof that made the course both fun and interesting. His examples were applicable and usually pretty funny. A really interesting class full of laughs and he was always willing to tell you more after class or during office hours. Tests were sort of on the easy side which meant that the curve was working against you. Great prof!
Absolutely excellent prof! Hollis made every concept very approachable and I felt by the end I got a very thorough understanding of the topics surrounding evolutionary psychology. I highly recommend taking any course with him!
Very disorganized. He indicated that the class would be easy then marked fairly hard. When asked what was wrong with certain answers on tests he didn't really have anything concrete to say. It is very apparent that he is a new prof. I will never take another class of his as it felt impossible to do well. Nice guys though.
This professor is super hard and extremely disorganized. He doesn't post notes online, because he "forgets" so you end up writing the entire class. His exams are also super unfair and poorly written.
Very poor teaching quality, states that all material covered in lectures and in the textbook is testable yet only covered a third of the material in class. Spends too much time on simple concepts, which gives the impression he does not understand the material he is teaching.
Awesome
Great professor. LOVED his enthusiasm for the subject matter, it was really contagious. Definitely recommend him above other psych profs. Very clear in his expectations and his exams were fair.
Hollis is awesome! I took his class as a 3 hour night class in the spring and I actually looked forward to going. He works through many examples throughout his lecture so it is easy to understand the concepts. Two pre quizzes, one midterm and a final. My downfall was not reading the textbook. Take a class from him, he's absolutely adorable!
He's so adorable! His enthusiam when discussing the course content is contagious, he makes you want to do well in this class. His lectures are interesting and he's an excellent prof!
His lectures will help you do better in the class but are not mandatory to pass or even get a good grade. Definitely read the textbook, he doesn't cover everything that is in the exams in his lectures. This being said, read over his powerpoints because they note which sections in the textbook are not going to be on the exam.
Funny and engaging prof. He keeps you awake and involved in the lectures. Makes Harry Potter references often, which is a huge plus in my book. His tests were very fair and covered exactly what was taught in classthe textbook. You'll probably do okay by just reading the textbook, but his lectures are definitely worth going to. Love this prof!
very disorganized, and made class very boring
really cool guy!! he gives really good examples and hes such a cutie omg. the first quiz and the midterm were a bit tricky but it got easier after that especially because they're not cumulative. i'm taking his psych 105 class too :)
Pro: Always a smile on his face and answers to all raised hands. 2 quizzes, 2 exams, all MCs and non accumulative Con: Little disorganized, talks a bit fast with somewhat confusing terms Attendance is recommended since he likes to put stats and pictures of examples in notes and expand on them later in class
Good prof, overall. Give decent lectures - the lectures are mandatory to attend, since there is large discrepancy between lecture discussion and ppttextbook stuff. Fair testing, just be sure to keep up with the work.
one of worst profs. Dig only a tiny topic in 3 lectures and test on the whole textbook. Even single detail in textbook can be tested. Very disorganized and really he does not know how to manage timing and material in class.
Articulate speaker, drops in pop culture references to keep you interested! Shows a couple of vids in class, really helped! Speaks quickly so you'll have to type fast, but he posts notes on eclass. A few text terms on tests, but they're mostly noncumulative. Quickly responds to emails, super friendly and on fleek fashion. Don't be afraid to say hi!
Memorize the textbook because the exams are textbook based not lecture based (take my advice on this one; don't learn your lesson the hard way). The lectures are just a crutch and useful for clarification but alone, they are vague. Overall, he's a funny, clean cut, approachable guy.
He is super helpful if you have questions and wants his students to do well! He is very approachable and modern, and his lectures are very engaging... make sure you attend! The exams are decent... some are harder than others and they do require you to read the textbook. I really enjoyed his classes though :).
Textbook is a must, as is reading his online lecture notes since the two don't have a lot of overlap. However, the material tested from the textbook is fairly vague, or if it is specific it will also be covered in lecture. Taking notes on your computer is a waste, instead listen to what he is saying and try to understand it.
Read the lecture notes and you will be fine. I read the text book at first, but then realized I could do well without using it. Never touched the text book since the first quiz and I got A in the class. His test are easy and fair. My only complaint is that material was rushed towards the end and didn't reply to emails. Attending lectures is needed.
He tests from both the lectures and textbook, and I find he will test some nit-picky details from the textbook so reading overstudying things you didn't cover in class is important. There are some holes in lecture notes (intentionally) so attendance is a must if you want a good grasp of concepts. Very enthusiastic, overall I enjoyed his class.
He occasionally tests nit-picky details from the textbook that weren't covered in class, so it's a must. His tests aren't overly difficult, especially considering the class is non cumulative. He's super funny, and overall a sweet guy. Attendance is important especially since he sometimes leaves holes in the lecture notes (intentionally).
Geoff Hollis is a quirky dude. He's helpful if you go to him in person but do not email him because he's not the most reliable as he doesn't get back to you for awhile. His tests are tricky so you should know your stuff but definitely an amazing learning experience. He increased my interest immensely in sensation and perception. Tests are tricky!
Great class- Geoff is a good lecturer and a really helpful prof who goes out of his way to help students. The exams are difficult but if you put in the effort you can do well. Two quizzes and two exams, and the final is cumulative. Recommended.
Great guy, great lecturer, great profPlain and simple a great prof! Just make sure you do read the book on top of attending the lectures and it'll be a sure GPA booster!
Hollis is a great professor. His lectures are fun and interesting and his tests are really fair and representative of what you learnt in class with a little bit from the textbook. His exams include a lot of straight forward questions, but he also likes to make you apply your knowledge, so if you have a good grasp of the material it's nice and easy.
His notes are missing some stuff which encourages you to attend lectures. However, I've missed several lectures but still ended with a B- because of the textbook (definitely a must in this class !). He's a funny and sweet guy, plus his sense of fashion is on point and he's pretty good looking.
Prof Hollis was an excellent prof and I loved going to his class despite it being at 8AM :) Make sure you buy the textbook if you want that A! He tests about some nit-picky stuff from it on the exams, and sometimes some questions from the online practice shows up. Course is non-cumulative, which is GREAT! Would definitely take again.
Honestly, anyone can have their own opinion about his lectures, but to me, they were amazing! I didn't mind getting up 8am in the morning :). He makes his lectures interesting with his quirky personality, and you can definitely tell that he loves his job. As long as you study lecture notes and highlightread the textbook, you're set! RECOMMENDED!
Read the textbook before covering that material in class and it will be a lot easier to learn and understand. I made notes from the textbook for every chapter and then just reviewed examples from lecture notes before tests and I did fine. Gives two quizzes and 1 midterm, questions from quizzes were repeated on midterm and final exam.
This is honestly the first class that I've genuinely enjoyed. Lectures were interesting, and he's a funny guy too. I doubt you'd do well if you didn't study, but if you go over notes and pay attention in lectures it's a pretty easy class. I'd definitely recommend having Geoff Hollis as a prof if you get the chance
I loved this class so much! Geoff is hilarious and makes lectures really interesting. Go over your notes and show up to class and you should do pretty well. By far my favourite prof
Really helpful outside of class
material presented in class are mostly supplemental to the text. Be sure to review both for the quizzes and exams. Do not expect to be spoon-fed material from the textbook. Prof Hollis' classes are very interesting. I sampled 2 other instructors of the same course and found he made the topics alot more insightful and interesting.
Hollis is definitely my favourite prof at the u of a so far. He is funny, interesting, and I just really loved his lectures. I had him for psych 104 and after a few classes I enrolled for his psych 105 class. Totally awesome prof!
Lectures are very interesting. He is very helpful and got a good sense of humor.
He's basically a god amongst men.
Fantastic lecturer. Talks incredibly fast. Knows his subject. Also very well-dressed... Lots of interactive activities to cement the learning. Really cares about his students - for our class, instead of a rqd textbook, he had us find and read research papers and do written parts of the exams - both really useful skills. Genuinely funny guy.
Loved his classes! Very clear motives for the classes, his grading is amazing and all his exams and tests are appropriate, with no curve balls towards students! His lectures are very easy to listen to and pay attention.
Tests were tough only because it was all multiple choice which is not my strong suit. This affected my grade, but otherwise I would have done much better. Every lecture was enjoyable and stuck with me, I would highly recommend this Professor.
I went to Evolutionary Psych to learn, not for credit, and stuck through the whole term. To call it interesting would be an understatement. He promotes thinking critically and outside the box (I LOVE that). He is there for you, and seems to genuinely like teaching and will point people in the right direction for research as well. Also super cute.
Great, funny, prof. 2 midterms and a final, all non-cumulative.
Be sure to read the text book! There will always be a couple questions that test whether or not you've read the text book (even the details, trust me). On a positive note, he has a good sense of humour and is quite comical.
beware very hard marker. took in spring, very interesting material and easy to follow during lectures didnt force us to buy textbook and wasnt necessary at all except if missed class. 1 group chapter project with less clear marking criteria , 1 midterm, 1 final but still was a really good prof and good interesting lectures
I really liked Geoff's class and I wasn't expecting to based on previous knowledge of evo psych but he makes the material very interesting and easy to understand. Lots of good jokes too, so class goes quickly. The group project was too big for a six spring class though, would be fine in a fall or winter term though. Text book is easy to read.
I personally really liked this evolutionary psych class. Material was interesting. Took it as spring class and I wish I hadn't. The group assignment lacked expectations and criteria and even after much effort put into it we did bad. I wish he was more clear what he was expecting. Marks really hard on long answers. However, his lectures were great.
His tests were really really easy if you read the textbook at least once (i did it before the lecture) and read the letter notes a few times. I found the lectures pretty general, but Im saying that now since Ive taken higher level psych courses. Recommended if wanted easy grades.
I found him to be really boring honestly, most of his notes are repetitious title pages. He went really slow. His exams were based on examples. Towards the end, I stopped attending his lectures altogether
Amazing prof. Had him for 104 and made sure I got him for 105 as well. Super cool and interesting guy who has really engaging lectures. He is really happy to helo students and provides a lot of resources to do so. READ THE TEXTBOOK. It's an easy read that will pay off during exams.
I love this professor. He's very kind and understanding. If you need help, he's there for you. And his lectures generally make sense if you pay attention. And he makes class quite interesting. He even made YouTube videos on how to do things. Plus he looks like Reid from Criminal MInds, it can't get better than that.
He is great
He's outgoing, super friendly. His involvement credits are a bit tricky; you need to be very specific, detail oriented to get the credits.
He puts all his powerpoints online, lets you try online quizzes over & over, and his lectures are funny and multi-media. I am not a science person and I still moderately enjoyed this class- if you read the textbook and listen in class you should be fine.
Has interesting lectures but they're mostly just fluff to add on to the textbook, easy marks come with tests you can write until you're satisfied, and did some involvement credit thing where you can literally show up for a "project day", do a few questions, and get credit! Didn't have a midterm. Reminds me of Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds...
Clearly a newer professor, sometimes lost track of lecture. Did his best to explain things pretty clearly, but only covered about half the necessary material in lecture. Textbooks are necessary to pass the regular quizzes, but the quizzes aren't particularly hard if you have it. Lots of opportunity to ask for help. Decent professor.
Good ole Geoff is the perfect professor if you are looking for an easy going yet instructional and directive and flexible session. He provides students with dozens of involvement opportunities and is very understanding, especially if you happen to be a first year lost case like me. Dr. Geoff has a fair grading system and his TAs are friendly.
Start reading the textbook asap and constantly read it. He says the exam are more towards lecture which is a lie. All you really need is to read the textbook since majority of the lecture notes are from the textbook with couple concepts and experiment examples are not. His test are easy if you understand the textbook inside out. Good Luck
His notes and lectures aren't that great, must read textbook! No mid-term. 20% of the marks are based off group projects, online discussions, and typed summaries of articles, unit reviews, etc. If you get over 20%, he takes 0.5% off the final for each additional 1%. Gives online unit quizzes, unlimited tries, and uses highest grade, easy 30%.
Geoff is a great prof - clear, interesting lectures... didn't miss a single class 'cause I actually wanted to go. Also he is hella cute.
Overall, he was a great prof. No midterms or course assignments. Just research participation which is an easy A .
Best prof to take for an intro psych course. Lectures are sometimes hard to follow. But overall good prof !
passionate about material. basic overall
He's very friendly and approachable and the lectures were not boring-he says some weird things. Make sure to use both textbook and notes-test was a little weird
Exams did not seem to correlate well to either what he taught or the textbook. I felt I learned so much but that it was not tested.
Textbook is crucial, but it's interesting and so are the lectures. He's funny and presents the information in a clear way. Pretty straightforward class. 1 midterm, open book online quizzes, research participation and the final, but beware-he mentioned group projects for future semesters. Overall, it's an enlightening course and he's a great prof
Great prof, funny and easy-going. Teaches the material clearly. Textbook is an absolute must, heavily tested from. Honestly if you didn't go to class, it wouldn't make a difference, as long as you understand the material in the slides and the textbook. Do you readings and it should be an easy A.
I really enjoyed Professor Hollis' lectures. They were clear and interesting and he was so funny! He gives excellent examples and tests on the videos watched in class as well as case studies discussed in class. I loved the lectures so much for 104 I made sure to get him again in Psych 105.
The material was really interesting, and he taught it decently. However, his wording of questions includes double negatives and are quite twisted. For one quiz, he reduced the denominator for some student's tests, but not all. If you put a bad question on a test, please take accountability for it and credit each student. Ridiculous.
I wouldn't specify if it's a must to go for lectures or not. You'd probably pass even if you didn't go for them, but the lectures are interesting and help you to understand more. His teaching style is basically self-learning. You teach yourself, and if you have questions, he's rather helpful! Take his class if this is how you learn. :)
This course is way too much work for a Psych 104 course and there's lots of group works involved and participation. No midterm only a final which was a bonus but otherwise don't take this course if you are looking for a GPA BOOSTER
His slides are LONG. Don't print them out, instead have an electronic copy to look at while taking notes on a separate document. He will dispurse one concept over 10 slides. Great lecturer, pay attention to his examples. Research participation and online quizzes are an easy 100% and go a long way in pulling up your mark.
Would not recommend this course unless you need it. I found this prof pretty useless teaching-wise; you're expected to learn material in your own time where class was wasted with nondescript powerpoints and group projects that did not supplement learning. Find another option or another prof or you might end up disliking psych right off the bat.
He says he changes his teaching style every term, but it looks like I got a pretty bad one. He teaches by powerpoint, but they are not really handy, as he did not cover everything in the weekly quizzes. There were quizzes every Sunday, but most of the content was covered by the textbook. Without it being open book, the content was hard.
Hollis talks very fast in lectures but lectures are interesting and fun! It is a MUST to study from every single slide AS WELL AS textbook! If you did all that then exams should be a breeze. Did take more effort that I expected for psych but nonetheless came out with an A. Also, Hollis is approachable and a total sweetheart! Cute too.
I'm not a fan of his notes being on google slides as they were a pain to load. He lectures on a lot of research studies and uses a lot of youtube videos . If you read the text and pay attention and do well on his online quizzes you'll be fine, I will say more effort was required to get an a in his class than with other prof's I've had
Our class was setup in a way that forces students to constantly participate through online quizzes, or online "involvement credits." This set up is super effective in that it keeps the students on top of the material, making the final easy! Thanks for an enjoyable class, keep up the passionate work :)
Online quizzes based on textbook material, can take as many times as you want & takes highest grade. Lectures are interesting and he's funny. Class attendance not mandatory though. Read the textbook, complete assignments on time, and you'll do fine. Retake the online quizzes for practice since most of the final exam questions came from there.
He's a nice guy to get along with, but he spend lots of time to explain his powerpoints, which makes his class very boring. He will test both the textbook and the ppt notes on his exams, and most question types are like "what does this example show" stuffs.
Geoff was great, during this semester he was super into his students involvement with the class, which can be a bit tedious if you have a full schedule, but he gave great feedback on his forums and if you participated it was easy marks. Great prof, really nice guy too he's always willing to help, 10/10 as far as profs go.
Dr. Hollis is a very kind and relateable professor. I took 104 Psych with him, and there was no question as to whether or not I would take his 105 class as well. His lectures are easy to understand and entertaining. I love psychology because of him!
It was an easy course, but exam questions really dissect the material you learned. Lots of ambiguously worded questions that can be misinterpreted and likes to test very specific, non-consequential details to screen the A's from the A+'s Not a hard course to do decently well in, but a very hard course to ace.
One of the best profs I've had so far in university, he's hilarious and always keeps lectures entertaining and engaging even when the material might be a bit dry.
Approachable, helpful. Changed format from previous years-- bi-weekly text-based unit quizzes, unlimited tries, takes many tries for 100% though. 1 midterm, final is cumulative. I read two chapters of the book, went to all the lectures, still got a 4.0 as he is lecture-based & I learn from hearing. Free 35% from quizzes and RP, don't slack here.
He's a funny lecturer but had a tendency to avoid the tougher concepts and sticks to the basics. Unfortunately he still tests based on the text so I would advise reading the text prior to class then ask him to clarify harder concepts.
He's absolutely one of the best instructors, probably the top 3, I have had at the UofA (out of 20+). I was thoroughly engaged in the classes and he has a great personality to talk to. I have never heard anyone say anything against his teaching; most people I talk with really like him.
After having Geoff for 104, I made sure to take his 105 class as well! His lectures are awesome and engaging (I never find myself dozing off), and his tests are very fair! If you keep up with readings for the eclass quizzes (worth 25%) and take some notes in class then tests are easy! Would recommend his class to everyone!
Very easy class, 25% of grade was based on simple online tests you could take many times. He posts all the notes online, and lets you get as much out of the course as you want to. Very laid back, but engaging in lectures. One of my favorite classes, would take again in a heartbeat.
Dr. Hollis is by far the greatest prof I've had yet. Despite it being an early morning class (yes, 10am is quite early for me) I was always eager to make it for his lectures and his 11/10 hair. What can I say? He always greeted students with warmth and respect. His exams, although fair, may be a tad difficult if you don't keep up with the readings.
Don't bother emailing him. Apparently he thinks it's ok not to respond to student emails
25% was from easy online quizzes and 10% from research participation. One midterm and a final, both reasonable but could be difficult and specific if you didn't study. Textbook is really important! Go to class because he elaborates on his notes.
Funny and sarcastic, the lectures were interesting and he was passionate about what he was teaching.
Did not enjoy this prof. Heavy reading required, and for participation you do in class group projects which is fun, but then you are expected to do big projects for participation. You do get unlimited tries on your online quizzes though so that's a plus. Also must attend class as he tests off of the powerpoint and rarely off of textbook
I was very motivated to attend class every day just because the lectures and material were so interesting and engaging. Furthermore, Dr. Hollis does not just assign a couple of MC exams. Grading is broken down into writing participation, group work and presentations. You get the chance to synthesize thoughts related to the class. I learned so much!
Dr. Hollis is one of the best profs I've ever had. He is so engaging with his lectures, they make the material more fun and very memorable for studying. He does have quizzes almost weekly online, these can be tough, but they are doable. These quizzes are what really boosted my mark and my exam marks as you must read your text book to even pass.
Geoff seems nice and laid back during lecture. You get an easy 25% of your grade from online quizzes when you can use the textbook (would suggest the ebook) and the midterm and final are based directly off class notes and lectures. Seems nice in lecture but pretty rude one-on-one or via email
Hollis is a very competent prof. He has a good grasp of the subject he's teaching. Lectures are standard, laid back but are simply an elaboration on what is in the textbook. His grading is pretty fair in that you get an easy quarter of your grade by finishing and doing well on your quizzes online, with a cap of 6 times. His exams are long but easy.
GEOFF HOLLIS IS THE BEST!!! He is funny and extremely clear when speaking. His lectures are to-the-point yet interesting. I took psyco 105 just because psyco 104 was so good with him. It was also very easy, because the textbook is really fun to read. If you get anything less than an A, it is NOT the prof's fault.
Dr. Hollis was an amazing prof. I took both his Psych 104 and 105 and finished with A+ in both :) As long as you read the text and take notes in class you should have no problems in his class. Would definitely recommend to anyone!
Took 303 with him because of all the positive feedback here. I now regret it big time. It was his first time teaching 303 so I guess that the reason why the expectation for students isn't clear. 2 midterm (consist of 70% essay and 30% mc). Only 50 minutes to finish the essay. Average is really low. Exams are marked very very hard. Stay away
If the essay is worth 70% of the midterm marks, I feel like he should have focused on teaching us how to write good essays. He only did once after the result of midterm1 turned out to be so low. This class isn't doing what it's supposed to eat doing - to learn about theories in psyc. It's more focused on writing. Take if you're good at writing
Lectures are interesting but be prepared to get wrecked on the exams! TA marks really hard. This is a very difficult class. Expectations are not clear.
Geoff is basically the best teacher ever, his lectures are SO interesting and he is genuinely a great guy. Make sure you read the textbook and DO the quizzes. He really gives you a great chance at getting a great mark. Best prof I've ever had.
hard course, lots of readings. more of philosophy than psychology but interesting/engaging lectures. exams are hard but he gives essay prompts beforehand so you can practice them reproduce them during the exam. genuinely nice dude, really caring. could come off as a bit rude at first though. will sometimes give you tea if you go to his office hours
Nice guy. Good lecturer. Hard class though and the exam format does not really reflect students' knowledge of the material. Some people are not good at writing and the exam is 70% essay. It's also marked hard. Only 50 minutes to write 5-6 paragraphs and 10 m/c. Lots of article reading. No textbooks.
Geoff is one of the few good lecturers at the U of A Psyc dept. However, this course was clearly designed very poorly. He said this yr was his first time teaching the class, so that could be why. As someone who's doing good in the class, I honestly do not blame half of the students who dropped. The exam deff does not reflect one's knowledge.
Geoff was probably the only reason I didn't drop out of INTD 400. He was good. Sandra was terrible.
He's actually a really sweet prof, which is why I was pretty bummed I had to drop this course. This was the first time he taught 303, and it was a disaster to say the least. I think the average on the midterm was a low 50. I'd gladly take another class with him, but if you're debating this course, don't. Find something that won't kill your GPA.
Geoff is a great prof, had him for psych 105, but this class was ridiculously hard. I believe the midterms were an average around 50 or below, i had to drop it because my GPA took such a hit even though i was prepared. Essay is very hard to do well on, not enough time. Id stay away from this class.
Tough course. Lots of articles, no textbook. Exams are written with little MC questions. Hard marker. He cares, but honestly, it's either you can write it well or you won't. As someone else stated, this course was just poorly designed.
1 midterm, 1 final, group prj, biweekly writing (free 15% if you just go to class). weekly article reading. great lectures; 3 hr night class but was engaged the whole time. the more tired he is, the faster he talks and more he stumbles on words but its kinda endearing. half written half MC tests, tough but fair grading. amazing hair + fashion 10/10
I really enjoyed him and his lectures, but the course was quite messy. He dropped quizzes and adjusted marks left and right, and it was always to our advantage but it still made it very hard to gauge how we're actually doing in the class. Super ridiculous scaling of project grades made quizzes unnecessarily stressful. Not awful but could be better.
He didn't repeat a single outfit all term. I'm impressed, Geoff!
CMPUT 174 killed me over the spring a couple years back and I had to drop it but this guy was pretty cool! We made games in class and stuff. Didn't know he was a psych prof... he seemed very CMPUT-y to me so this is cool!
Didn't have the chance to have Geoff as a prof but we have to watch his videos every week and he is excellent!!
Thank you so much for teaching us. My condolences to your family. I hope you had a wonderful life. May you rest in peace.
