Thought provoking and smart maybe, but unhelpful. This is a class in Post Modernism, not World Politics. To pass, you must think like him.

EXTREMELY OVER AMBITIOUS. Difficult take-home exam and many, many course readings. Lectures aren't that helpful. Teaching at a very high level for a 200 course.
Extremely intelligent, but unable to explain the steps he takes to arrive at his conclusions. Will be a great teacher in ten years, but for now is scattered, unclear, overambitious and arrogant. Post-modern and unflexible.
Nice guy, quite passionate about the topic. The class came off as being about postmodernism, and perhaps failed to provide contrasting views on the topic. Interesting, but perhaps limited in scope. Class assignments were tough to discern...

Clearly knows his material but, since he is a new proffesor, is entirely overambitious and becomes frustrated when the class is unable to articulate their responses at a level close to his. Courses needs structure, though he has a ton of enthusiam.

Oh, my...Too many, many reading assignments, lecuters were useless for clarification AND way TOO involved for a 2nd year course!He,however,is an excellent mediator,does not tolerate ignorant comments and teaches post-modernism well. Love the scarf!

He was inspiration, interesting and open minded. His assignments were challenging but rewarding. I found his political (not necessarily postmodern) slant to be an advantage not a draw back as it provided me with another angle to view IR. Very cutting edge

Why all the hating, Geoff the man. This one time he was going off on some jive talk, he got so intense that he was spitting and drooling. Great lectures but some very intense papers (What is the modern state? I still don't know)

Giving students the 'opportunity' to do research for him as a way of furthering 'their' careers?? I think this is an abuse of power - something that GW probably thinks we're not 'ready to understand yet' until he has enlightened us.
He has mindblowing ideas. A true inspiration for aspiring leaders in the international relations track! He's tough, its mentally draining but its an exhilarating roller coaster ride.
He should be teaching a woman' study course.

What is the modern state? I have no idea. I think it has something to do with drugs and making fun of the police though.
Dont give whitehall credit for these concepts, he is only teaching them, they aren't his. He is a smart guy, but a mediocre teacher. Courses are stimulating not because of him, but because of the material. Any one could make a po-mo class interesting...
Would rather remain confused than join the ridiculous amount of ladies lined up after class to "ask questions".
A good effort, but a BOOO for the harsh attitude, lack of time for students and really brutal ego. Whitehall WAS UViv's shining star, but now he's nothing more than the regular bitter grouchy prof. Come back old whitehall!
Half the time I am utterly confused in this class, and then I have one mind blowing moment and one comment or movie clip or something will put it all in perspective. Whitehall does what he says, he turns everything upside down, but it's no bad thing.
Inconsistent, frequently annoying & really tall! Maybe his articles are decent, but his teaching abilities are yearning for improvement.
What?? I suspect that Post Modernism isn't as stupid as most people will think it is after his class. I don't know what the hell he was talking about. He can't teach and couldn't get anything across to students. It's fair to say I hate him.
Whitehall's classes are some of the few that I really look forward to. The stuff he's teaching is confusing because it's not 'traditional' IR material, and that's probably why student's give him hell for being unclear
If you want to actually use your brain, then take his class, he actually makes you think. He keeps things interesting, and is always helpful and generous with his time. If you make an effort, he will make an effort.
Anyone who says Whitehall is unclear or unhelpful is either stuck on seeing IR through a traditional discourse, or hasn't taken the time to talk to ask him for help or advice. He is very willing to help you if you ask.

I have a new found respect for this prof. Really challenging, but interesting. Expects a lot from students but willing to help them along the way.
He is smoking hot in a geeky reminds me of Gonzo from the Muppet Babies with an afro kind of way. He engages the class and makes the incredibly boring readings apply to current events. I want to do him, and I hear I'm not the first. Makes fun of himself.
Readings are very difficult, and Geoff is so brilliant it's hard to even begin to understand what he's saying sometimes. Go to tutorials and office hours. Magic Realism is always on the final take-home exam! He's hot too, if u like Joe Millionaire!
It's sad to see what French philosophy can do to an otherwise decent, seemingly intelligent human being. Without a doubt the dumbest course I've ever taken (and not because I don't "get" the critical approach).
Quite a hard marker...No papers in the class made for some heavy studying! Take-home 16 page final wasn't the funnest either. Funny guy who claims to be on our side but should really work on that!

He is a hard marker and I avoid his classes for that reason. But hey, he was the guy who taught me how to think critically, so I owe that to him.
A funny guy. One of the better teachers in the political science department. Highly recommended if you're into post-structuralist theory and a general critique of the political spectrum as a concept to begin with. Awesome course.
The best class that I ever had. History of Africa would have been super interesting anyways, but he brought this class to the next level. I always looked forward to going to this class, the fact that he is absolutely gorgeous didn't hurt either.
This was the best course I have EVER taken at Uvic. Geoff is the type of professor that you desire to have when you are at University. Besides the fact that he is extremly smart and has an exceptional relationship with his students, he is inspiring.
I loved going to his lectures and actually was stimulated by his thoughts.... didn't hurt that when he wasn't talking my mind was easily occupied with other thoughts about him!!! Down side is he is a very hard marker.
He should be teaching graduate classes - not undergrad. Most of what he says goes over most of our heads. He is all over the place and not focussed and he marks very hard. He is a nice guy, but I really didn't get much out of his class.
This was an inspiring course taught by a passionate teacher. By far one of the best classes offered at Uvic...His lectures made you genuinly interessted in the events that happened/are happening in Africa.Doesn't hurt that he's sexy as hell either!

well what can I say... Whitehall has taken a turn for the worse. Its not suprising to see what a dry, theory based and ridiculously uninspiring Poli Sci department can do to a new Prof... Has for the hotness factor.Ask him, if your under 21 he'll say yes
He was so unclear and present such advanced theories and principles he was almsot impossible to follow. He expects to much from undergrads, I mean some Profs still dont' understand magic realism and he had it on our final!
UNORGANIZED! Do not have enough time for the midterms, 50 min just doesn't cut it.
He's frustrating. Can be super nice or turn on a dime. He's claims being organized would go against every fibre in his body... but it would help me understand what's going on. He is by far the best looking prof on campus though, no question.
Not organized, does not teach in point form, cookie cutter way, but it fits the material; the world isn't organized. Damn good prof, will take any other course he teaches. I wish I had recorded his lectures.
Whitehall is a good lecturer. The class is interesting and relevent to the world today. His tests are REALLY hard though. 50 mins. is not enough tiime to writre what he expects you to write. Overall the class is really hard, but probably worth taking if your interested in going farther in Poli Sci.

Hard professor. Very passionate, though. Has high expectations, don't expect to get an A in his class, but you will learn a lot.
Not any easy professor but if you work hard you'll do well. He prefers to test students not on memorization but their ability to understand concepts...either you like that method or you don't. It helps that he's hot...makes the 9:30am class all that much better!
One of the worst lecturers I have had. At this level information should be presented in a much or organized fashion. Hard marker on vague questions equal poor grade. Could be just me.

Whitehall is a terrible professor who is so entrenched in his post-everything discourse that he fails to allow for any different interpretations. His class was a nightmare!!!
Work hard and you will do well. Will push your critical thinking skills to the max. Expects a lot from students but is willing to help if you make the effort. Overall a great prof!
Passionate to the max. Really got into the material. You won't necessarily learn too much from the lectures if you don't like a philosophic professor. But worth taking one of his courses just to practice doing some insanely hard readings.
WAS one of the best professors in the department - you should feel really ripped off if you never got to take a class with him. Hard,yes, but why would you want learning to be easy? The department should feel guilty for letting him leave.
