Professor Bell doesn't believe in curves or staying on topic in lecture. He doesn't know how to lecture so he acts like its a class of 30. Go to class, the review sessions, and do well in lab (the TAs are kick ass) and you'll do well. Also, despite the rumors he's not hot, he just looks it from far away. In closing, BLUE CRABS!

Professor Bell is a very dedicated teacher, and he strives to help every student learn the material. He encourages you to think critically about the material and key concepts. He is well prepared for lecture and makes himself extremely available if you need extra help. I am glad I took a class with him.

In this class Professor Bell steers discussion over a large array of challenges, concepts and ideas concerning ecosystem management. The reading is daunting for a non-science major and his assignments are difficult. As long as you keep communication lines open with him you can get a good grade. He is extremely interested in how much and how well his students are learning the material. Come prepared, he can tell when you are not.

Very helpful and shows that he truly cares that people are learning the material. Good lecturer, often very clear. Class is tough, but you learn so much by the end of it. GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS (either with Bell or the TAs). these are extremely helpful in reinforcing the concepts.

If you're looking to take a science class just to fulfill a general ed requirement, steer clear of this class! Dr. Bell expects you to come into ENEC 202 with in-depth knowledge about the subject. For a humanities major, this class was incredibly difficult. Also, he gives 50-60 question tests to be completed in 50 minutes and expects way too much.

He's experimenting with a flipped-classroom approach and he's terrible at it. The material is too complex to understand clearly after watching a lecture video before class, and there is never an opportunity in class to ask questions specifically about the homework. When you do ask questions his answers come across as smug and condescending.

Class time is a waste. 80% of my grade is based off a group project that is brought up once before the last week of class. Dr. Bell is over explanatory at times and would do better to cut down his material. You have to watch these flipped classroom lectures online that are way longer than they need to be so you don't always get what's important. He clarifies well in class though and I think he's better than many give him credit for. I took it as a gen ed and enjoyed it

Dr. Bell is a great professor, and his lectures tend to be really engaging! His teaching style is flipped lecture, though, so be prepared to do readings or watch lecture videos for homework so that you're prepared for class. If you study diligently, the tests shouldn't be too hard, but this is by no means an easy class.

Do. Not. Take. Geoffs. Classes. No course schedule, sneakily posts assignments that you WILL fail to catch. Nastiest attitude I have ever seen out of someone on a campus. Wish I could get in the octagon with this guy. Hate is an understatement. Likely going to change my major/career goals/life just to never have to see this dude again. Manlet.

Loved this class although it wasn't a simple science class. There was a lot of content which is normal for an ENEC class. I really loved Dr. Bell's lecture and I don't mind the flipped classroom. I didn't do too hot on any of the exams but there are a lot of other components to be graded by. Lab was rather difficult and TA was OK.

Bell's classes are interesting, but he tends to make everything way more complicated than it has to be. He is very condescending and is very disorganized. When he makes mistakes, instead of owning up to them and moving on, he will blame the students for everything. Look up this guy on socials; he makes many uncalled-for comments about students.

The class was decent in the beginning, but towards the end of the semester, we were behind, and he just kept adding assignments at the last minute. Quizzes would randomly pop up the night before, and the schedule he had posted was always off. Overall, the class is frustrating, and he can be condescending for no reason.

He is a nice guy but not the best at explaining concepts, especially when there are questions. Very knowledgeable and passionate about marine fisheries though.

Professor Bell is awful. The material is interesting and the course is cool for about the first third... other than that it's a drag. Bell is unorganized, doesn't return grades, and is insanely condescending. I have never had a professor who acts like their obligations to students are such an inconvenience the way Bell does.

The class was behind by over three weeks this year when it was not in other years. It is past the last day of class and there are no guidelines for what we are being tested on. The grades given to us are not representative of our actual grades and there isn't a welcoming environment for questions in this class.

Do not take this class with him unless you are proficient in excel. Dr. Bell does not make anything easy for you and does not explain things well. He seems to be frustrated when not understanding something rather than explaining it. Horrible experience

This 4 credit class is has WAY too many components. My weeknights were filled with watching lecture videos with overcomplicated nightly quizzes (flipped classroom). In addition to the 3 weekly lectures, there's a lab and a recitation which takes up HOURS of the week, and aren't worth much. Participation questions are graded based on correctness :)

He is a funny guy who is easy to get along with, but he is a horrible professor. Students don't get the help they need, the directions for quantitative assignments are vague, you have to take notes because the powerpoints are vague, and he is a tough grader. Be prepared to use Excel with limited directions. GOOD LUCK!!!

Professor is a nice person, but his teaching style is difficult to make comments, personally I don't like it. Heavy workload, unclear powerpoint, polleverywhere according to correctness, challenging exams, time-consuming lab works(once a week). Choose it with considerations, as this class killed my curiosity of environmental science:)

Most of the learning is done outside of class, this can be very overwhelming. He seems to care a lot about teaching. He always has the top button of his shirt undone. Not sure if that's for sensory reasons or because he thinks it's cute.

Bell is extremely condescending, and the weird course format is massively detrimental to our learning process. Do not under any circumstances take his courses. He will make you feel useless for not having his 10+ years of experience in the discipline and not being able to read his mind. He is probably great at his job, but an awful professor.

Bell's classes are extremely challenging, but have made me a better student and prepared me for the field. Be ready to speak and have meaningful academic conversations in every class, and expect harsh critiques on debates and papers. Not an easy class, and he'll make you feel dumb repeatedly, but it's incredibly rewarding if you put in the work.

Not a super easy class, but doable. The tests get harder, so save your corrections for midterm 2 or 3. The class is alot of work; you have to stay on top of the lectures to understand the in class activities. The final is hard, but most did better than expected. Overall, pay attention to the activities in class and the lab manual is very useful.

High expectations, low guidance. Bell's course is built around a student-led project and focuses on a week of fieldwork. Be ready for last minute assignment uploads and vague directions… you'll be figuring things out on your own. I would take this class again in a heartbeat but some weeks were extremely overwhelming.

Could see how he'd be a good, challenging teacher for an ENEC major but I am not. He's very rude and passive aggressive. You'll not want to answer things and he'll make you feel dumb. The nice part is that midterms are online but they're still not easy. He has his own answers because we use his own manual and textbook.

This class is very time-consuming and overly difficult. The midterms just get worse, and the material is not explained very well in the lecture. There are drops on the homework and opportunities for corrections on exams which are the only helpful thing. His flipped classroom style is not helpful at all.

NOT FIRST YEAR APPROPRIATE! Took this my freshman fall and it was overly difficult and time consuming. His "flipped classroom" teaching style means that you have to learn all the content outside of class and lectures are for quizzing you. The exams get progressively harder so save your revisions for the 3rd midterm. Godspeed.

He makes you feel dumb as if you should be just as knowledgeable as he is. He writes his own books and lab manual so everything that he says is correct and everything you learn in bio & chem “is wrong”. Nobody ever made a 100 on an exam, and our final median was a 64. He probably finds enjoyment in making his class hard. Don't take, lol.
