I took back in Fall 2000. Was hard and challenging, but I learned alot, got an A, and enjoyed his class. If you just want an easy A, and not learn then don't take him. If you want to succeed in life, then i recommend Bellah.

Unless you want to feel or be more stupid or hate english passonately, don't take Bellah. He insulted many students, so majority of them dropped the class even when they were getting a's and b's. Lectures were extremely offtopic and uninteresting.

Bellah is ambiguous, but fair, and as long as you do the work, you automatically get a C; he even lets you use a cheat sheet on tests. These guys just copped out.

bellah sucks...whatever you do, DONT TAKE HIM. he talks ALL class about pointless things, he doesnt give A's on papers, he is hard to understand, and whatever is right to him is RIGHT as far as interpreting literature...JUST DONT TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM!
There are some pretty bad teachers at OCC, but this guy takes the cake. His tone is condescending and he does not offer much clarification as to what he expects from his students. Oh sure, he's witty and gay, but definitely not fun or creative. Don't take his class unless you are a mind reader.

I was allways an "A" student, but with this guy here, everything is relative, nothing is clear and you don't know what the heck he wants you to write about! DON'T TAKE IT!!!

Writing Reviews. WORST CLASS EVER. Do not take this class if you want to learn anything or become a better writer. This class is only good if you want to go to crappy plays and spend a bunch of money doing it. You WILL NOT learn how to write a review in this class. You will go see events and talk about them.That's it.Waste of time/money.big regret.
Mr. Bellah is a great teacher even though he not the most freindly teacher. He talks down to people a lot, when he calls on you and your answer is wrong, he will put you on the spot. He is condescending. I didn't really care much for him. His class is easy as long as you work hard. One thing for sure is that he is old school.

He is very condescending and a difficult grader. Sometimes unclear about what he wants you to write about. He is a very old school teacher. If you want to take his class you definitely have to work extra hard.
I learned from the class. If you are willing to put in the 110% effort he expects then you should do fine. My essay writing techniques consistently improved from his teachings.Although not the most friendly teacher in class, he takes time to clarify himself if sought out independently.

writing reviews. take this class if you are interested in outings (plays/ museums/ shows etc). you will learn how to organize your thoughts (assuming you have some) on a given work. have money available- the trips are not free. this class was fun!!
Is a very fair grader, and you have to really EARN your grade. If you're willing to work hard, you'll do well.
Waste of time. Teacher needs to be fired and have someone who actually knows something put in there. Useless.

this guy is so discouraging. He tears away at students confidence like no other. He is rude to students when he dissagrees and is little help. I wanted to do well more than anything and just needed a little help but he failed to reconize it and treated me and the rest of the class like we were incompetent. He worked hard to make this class on review writing fun, entertaining and a learning experience. I would take this class, if taught by him, again.
ok, mr. bellah is a fine teacher. he wants his students to understand literature at an intellectual level. his style is traditional, he is educated. his class is not easy, but whoever takes it will learn something valuable.

this is by far the biggest waste of time possible. this man teaches nothing. he should just teach a field trip class. all you do is go to events and write about them. he does not help you learn how to write a review or teach you anything. he will tell you to read the book. should be fired. this class wont help you achieve or learn anything at all.
He's the worst teacher ever, he only gives a 20 minute breake in a 4hr class, he thinks he is Mr. Perfection, he never stop talkin, you get bored in that class and you won't learn anything. So I won't recomend you take any of his classes.
This teacher is a very condescending person. DO NOT GO to his office hours for help, because he not helpful at all. What is the point of office hours, if you go for help and he still gives you a grade you don't deserverve! His office hours and his discussions in class are pointless! They will absolutely not teach you anything about writing!

listen to me carefully. if you don't want to suffer, do not take his class. he's a greader for major university. he picks every word,conmma, and period you put. he's the monster greader. if you earn "a" on his class, you are the master of english. but you'll learn a lot with pain.
I earnestly opine that if you want to be a master of English, he is the ONE you should take because you will learn a lot of things that you don't know about writings, but if you don't want to be discouraged by his GRADING, then avoid it because he critiques based on his English philosophy, not on your creativity. in my class about 30% dropped...
if you have an average writing skill, go for it. his class consists of 4 essays (750 words each) and 4 homework assignments (500 words each) and some quizzes, and almost no in-class writing. bellha emphasizes effective writing, although his grading a bit tough, according to class mates' comments. have a fun! no ESL student.
He's a funny little guy with alot of personality. He looks down on anyone with a different view, but as long as you just reiterate his points when you write your essays, you'll pass. If you are opinionated, then this class will irritate you. If you dont really care and all you want is the credit, then this class isnt that bad.
If you want a good grade in the class DO NOT TAKE him. I got a B, after working my ass off. He does not help with essays and is very particular about the format of his essays. He is very fixed in his ideas and if you have a different opinion he criticizes it. His grading is very hard I cant express myself enough to convince you drop the class.
If you do not share his viewpoints in your essays you will not receive a good grade. If you dont care about your opinion just remember what he says in class (he repeats it about 10x a day) and reiterate it on the essay. Assignments happen usually every 2 weeks, its a pretty laid back class. Assignments graded easily, essays are graded very hard.
I went in to speak with him during office hours about my essays and he was NO HELP AT ALL. And he's not a very open person. He never discloses anything personal about himself, which makes it difficult for his students to really connect with him on any level.

Do NOT take this class. Its ok to get through, but if your worried about you GPA, he is impossible. Never had a C in my life and yeah, he gave me a C. Oh my god, this teacher is horrible. I can tell you that his lecture are really boring, doesn't make sense at all. but the cool thing about him is that his testes and homework are REALLY. He grades every essay hard.

Dont take this guy. He embarrassed me in front of the whole class of my email because it wasn't an adeuquate email you will send a teacher and brought it up in front of the whole class how poorly stated the email was. He grades harsh on the essays, and let me tell u, the essay questions are confusing!

He's not THAT bad. Don't get me wrong, he is awful, but he's survivable. He has this way of being completely boring and hilarious at the same time [unintentionally of course]. I found humor in his utter monotony. Plus we watched movies the whole time. Do your work, doodle during lectures, and you'll be fine.

well...this guy is the worst teacher ever. no office hours, no help, grades, super hard based on his own opinions and he is really annoying. dont take his class.
Warning: DO NOT TAKE! I should have looked at this site to view the ratings of this professor before I took his class. Big mistake!!!! His lectures go from informative for a couple of minutes to babble the rest of the hours. You will not get an A, nor will you get much help. His odd expectations for everyone single one of you are unreasonable.
DO NOT TAKE! He has a strict guideline of what he thinks should happen during a class and takes no excuses (even a trip to the ER with doctor notes and teacher eyewitnesses).
The worst English teacher I have ever had. He is unfortunately good with his attendance and lies if he says you'll get out early with the cost of your break. His lectures are boring and repetitive and the material is boring. His essay topics are dull and his grading is harsh for his teaching methods. He offers little to no help at all. Don't take.

Stay away from the instructor!!! He would be mad I used 3 exclamation points, and that my first sentence wasn't a sentence. If you have to take him, you can suffer through if you must. Please note that everyone in my class can't stand him. Note the ratings...speak for themself.

DO NOT TAKE. As a student of Aristotelian and Boolean logic, I was repeatedly repulsed by this professor's constant misrepresentation of logic and critical thinking. Mr. Bellah presents himself as pompous and arrogant; unwilling to see his own shallowness and poverty of aspect. Someone should seriously review the qualifications of this professor.
Pretty much the same experience every else on this page had. Do everything you can to avoid his class and don't even dream of getting an A.

He is the worst teacher you could ever ask for. If you can avoid taking this class do it. You will never pass if you miss more than 3 classes.
Bellah is a tough grader, but if you pay attention to what he says & write correctly...you'll be fine. What's kind of neat about his class is that he also has the class studying movies in depth (since screenplays are literature, too). Doing this offered a whole new look at movies, directing, and acting. It's a good and challenging class! :)
It would be one thing if Professor Bellah were a bad teacher but still a pleasant person to be around. Unfortunately he is pretty much the anti-Christ AND a bad teacher. I think he knows what he is talking about, but he seems like he hates everything and everyone, which makes for a unhealthy learning environment. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!

Despite what the other comments say I think professor Bellah is a great teacher and person. Just do the work and in the end you get the grade you deserve.

I enjoy school and meeting different teachers but Bellah was so unpleasant. His class isn't too bad and the readings are really cool, but his essays are unbelievable. I agree with the other comments who say that he will grade badly if your essay is not what he is expecting. Take the class if you're willing to work really hard on the essays.

all my essays were a D. Even the other students that I've read had a D or an F. Very rude and always wants to be right in a situation. SUPER HARD CLASS, I came to class everyday, did my homework everyday, and I studied, but still I failed his class.
he's alright if you have no other choice but his class , make sure to right your essays like he says and if u want to pass his class go to his office hours and ask him about everything
