do not take this class with this man. he is probably the worst teacher i have ever had in my life. he is not encouraging at all and had to change the average grade to pass his class by 8 points because not one person was doing well.
Horrible, HORRIBLE professor. Completely fails to prepare you for any assignment. Rambles on about examples instead of explains key concepts. Knowingly puts trick questions on the midterm and then says he kept it there on purpose to our class. (If you are reading this, maybe don't do that when the class average hasn't passed an assignment yet??).
His tests/quizzes are impossible wont matter how much you study or how many SI sessions/ extra help you go to.
So much homework on top hat that you can find on Quizlet and it takes way too much time to do. does not even teach, sounds confused when he talks and I had him at 8 am and spoke in the same monotone voice every morning. Doesn't seem like he knows what he is doing and the class average was at best in the high 50s every time. Don't waste your time.
He really is a very nice guy and very knowledgable in his respected field. Econ isn't very easy to understand but he tries his best. Also it's his first year teaching
In order to finish this class with a B or above, you need to do a lot outside of class. Lectures are confusing, so take detailed notes. The only way you will fully understand the math portions of this class is by GOING TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, ATTENDING SI/TA MEETINGS, and watching outside sources (YouTube). Take test prep VERY seriously. Good Luck.
Prof Carr is a nice guy, I got mono this semester and he was helpful about me missing class. However as a teacher he is severely lacking, Econ is already hard and he doesn't help. Lectures are dry, reading off slides, and the few times he does problems on the board he jumps steps very quickly. The class averages on the 2 exams have been 65 and 55.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He doesnt know how to teach. He just reads off the slides and you can barely hear him because he talks so quiet. The average in all of his classes for exams and quizzes was a 50% or lower. He has SI sessions that you can go to, but they barely help. If you take this class, get ready to fail.
Terrible class, teacher wants you to do bad. Doesn't explain anything. Tests are completely unrelated and make no sense. So monotoned and boring. Everyones doing bad. Don't take this teacher you will regret it.
He definitely is good at what he knows but doesn't know how to teach the material. A lot of people in class had a hard time. I don't recommend him.
Professor Carr is a good guy but a mid teacher. He is soft spoken, and the tests are hard. You can study for hours and hours and take the exams and still be sitting their feeling like your stupid. The homework are easy and he drops the grading criteria based on the test averages. I needed this class for the requirements, DON'T take for fun!
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is a nice guy but doesn't know how to teach. The lecture and text is barely connected, so you might fail even though read book and sit for hours doing homework. His syllabus is quite confusion that you never understand how to calculate grade. This is the most difficult one I ever had. It ruined the joy this course would have.
Hes nice and pretty fair with grading but the test are harder than necessary. He also asks questions in class for grade points and so you cant miss class without losing points. Not horrible but theres easier classes for the same credit.
Dr. Carr is a really smart man. However, his teaching style is atrocious. He has two tests other than the final at the end of the year. He refuses to curve tests, he changes the "letter threshold" instead. So basically he just makes it super hard to gauge how well you are doing in the class. I took multiple AP classes in hs but this is way harder.
I received a final grade of a B+ but my actual grade was a C- but because everyone did so bad in this class, the curve was that steep. I genuinely do not feel prepared for future economic courses because I could not tell you a single thing I learned in this class.
Professor Carr's class had 1/4 of my section drop the class. The class was so hard that he has this scale where my 74% was a B+, but the content was so extensive even my SI who was an econ major was lost. He also has participation questions each class that were graded half for participation and half for correctness.
I would strongly suggest not signing up with this professor. He has a great knowledge of microeconomics but acts very cocky about it. I come out of every class feeling defeated. I felt like I put so much time and effort in and nothing was enough be successful. He seems to find joy in making students upset and flustered.
This class is challenging, but that's expected in college course as it's how you learn. He is smart and yes, the exams are hard, but if you study you should be good. He uses questions from homework, quizzes, and previous exams for the tests and he gave a very generous curve. If you do poorly, it's because you are doing worse than your peers,
makes it very difficult and tests are near impossible.
Prof Carr is genuinely just a bad professor. I truly believe that he knows what he's talking about, but he has no idea how to communicate it to us. The exams are insanely hard, even if you study, you just really can't pass them. 40% of my class dropped during the semester and the exam averages were never above a 56.
Read off of slideshows; used TopHat a ton for homework and readings; was not clear on criteria needed in order to receive a certain grade; monotone; overall not very good.
Professor Carr is the worst professor I have ever had. He does not explain anything and words things on his homework, quizzes, and tests in the most complicated way. It is like he wants you to fail and learn nothing.
If you listen to one rating on this website, I hope it is this one. I BEG you not to take this class with Professor Carr- unless you absolutely have to. There is absolutely no way to prepare for exams or even homework. He admittedly prides himself on your failure. Pure power trip professor. Even getting an A, I would never take this class again.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. This professor is very soft spoken and monotone, it almost seems like he's talking to himself. He uses tophat which is difficult to navigate the way he has it setup. Lastly, midway through the course half of my class withdrew. He also announced that a 50 would be considered passing. DO NOT TAKE.
It is a hard class, and the way he explains topics is not the best, but you should not depend on them. The only way to fail this class is to be lazy, skip class, and not doing the readings. It is college, so do not expect learning hard material if you do not put the effort. Many students complain about the teacher, but they do not even try nor read
Not the end of the world. If you take notes, do work, and know the stuff, you will be fine. Exam questions are hard and challenging, but Professor Carr sticks with his lecture content, so paying attention in class helps. He uses interesting examples and talks about economics-related current events in class, which I think is pretty interesting.
Prof Carr is quite the guy. He tries to be funny, but he is not. His lectures are read off slides and take much longer than they should. Quizzes and Exams are heavily curved or the whole class would fail. If you want an empty lecture take his class in the spring semester.
I'm honestly surprised by the other reviews...he heavily curves so most of the class does well. If you fail its because you did worse than most of your peers. His tests are fine if you study but this topic is challenging in general so don't expect it to be a breeze. I took him for micro and macro and hate econ and got an A so don't be scared off.
He is a robot
We have few grades except quizzes and a midterm and the class average for the quiz was around 50% and he said this was great. Everyone I have talked to in the class is not able to learn from his lectures he gets distracted and goes on a tangent about random stuff and sounds like he is just talking to himself.
terrible class test averages were normally never higher than a 60. i took him for micro and macro and got a c in both
I took him for micro my freshman year and hated it. Thought it would be better for macro (let's be real our econ dept sucks so bad) and there was no one else to take. I genuinely cannot learn from him. Every question I answer in class, on homework, on tests, etc. is a gamble because I have no clue what it going on ever.
Took this prof. for both macro and micro (awful decision). His test averages for the class are close to a D, then proceeds to claim that's a good average. His class is very boring, and most homework's and tests are just riddled with trick question after trick question. Don't understand why he makes intro level classes this difficult.
Professor Carr is a very boring man. He lectures in the same monotone voice for the entire 50 minutes, and it is a very unengaging lecture. He makes you answer questions in class that not only count for participation, but for accuracy too. He gives complicated examples and does not explain things clearly. He is very very boring, steer clear of him.
This class is impossible. He reads off of the lecture slides, gives no examples on how to do any problems that appear on homework/exams and then is shocked when the class average sucks. Maybe teach next time instead of read? He's a very smart man but expects the students in these intro classes to grasp a PHD level understanding of economics.
He was a very down to earth guy, but an awful teacher. All he does is teach off of power-points every day and talks about a new topic every class. He's awful at explaining concepts and just so bad at teaching in general. In my class after our first test the literal class average was a 51%.
He packs a lot of information into each lecture, but almost all information that will be on tests and quizzes is available in slides. There are very few tests and quizzes, and small amounts of homework covering each chapter. Not much work for class outside of reviewing slides and preparing for quizzes and exams.
Homework and in-class questions are graded on accuracy and participation, so it is almost impossible to get free points in this class. Tests and final are 40-50 questions. The only "good" thing about him is he may drop thresholds for grades. Without that, 75% of the class would make a C- or lower (avg was 58). He is too smart for an intro course.
He seems like a nice guy - should not be teaching an intro-level course. He is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about economics but this class goes into too complicated topics for intro level. I have no idea what he's talking about ever. He explains things in a complicated way. I need a dumbed-down and slower version. Everyone has a 50% prob.
His lectures are so overwhelming there is so much information. He does not know how to explain things in a simpler way. He makes an intro class very complicated. The exam reviews are similar to the exams which is very helpful. He changes the grading scale so people pass his class.
Carr is really not that bad. He actually tries to help his students do well. In most of my business classes what you get on tests and homework is what you get. Carr curves EVERYTHING! He understands his class is hard so he tries to help his students. His passing grade in his class is a 60 and will only go down depending on how the class does.
Says that a D test average is a good sign for him. Carr will go into an in depth tangent about one possible outcome of a topic rather than a straightforward comparison of all possible outcomes, and then he will test you on a challenging outcome that he did not cover.
Geoffrey Carr is a masochist. He takes pleasure in making questions trick questions to try and mess with student's heads. He also assigned 52 homework questions due before the final. The class is so bad that he praises having a 50% average on his midterms. Only redeeming quality is he has a grading scale because he knows he can't teach.
Stands in one spot, lectures off slides, and overcomplicates concepts WAY too much for an intro level course. Most of the exam/quiz questions are trick questions. The averages for our two exams were a 60% and then a 51%. I have an A in all classes EXCEPT this one. Genuinely if you want to keep your sanity, do not take his class. Trust.
He cannot teach. He should not be teaching a beginner course. He doesn't know how to present the material to students and concerningly likes the fact that people are doing poorly; he claimed it showed that it was "challenging us." Also for extra credit, we had a whole class dedicated to auctioning off extra credit points. Absolutely cannot teach.
Only reason I managed an A was because I sold him my first born child. Im surprised he didn't ask me about how many coconuts and fish I'd need to get in order to recuperate for this loss. This man seriously has an obsession with them. Don't even get me started about him and his caverns of cheese. Glad I'm not an econ major because I learned nothing
Carr is a nice guy and super smart, but should not be teaching this class. He is very monotone and overcomplicates lecture. Our class average on a test was never better than a 60, and tests where always full of trick questions. The only way most pass is through his letter grade curving system.
The material taught is too much for an intro level course. It is so much to understand that you will forget about a lot of things when taking an exam. The only redeeming quality i can give is that he curved the grading. If not for that, most of the class would have low C's and D's. Do anything you can to avoid this class.
His exams are hard and he isn't the best teacher, but it is impossible to fail his class. I got a B and failed every single exam. He will help you if you ask him questions, but because of the size of the lecture it is difficult. He doesn't curve grades until the very end so it is kind of scary to look at your grade. You needed a 54 to pass..
Professor Carr cannot teach. He knows economics extremally well, but struggles in reexplaining it back to students. However, in his defense, he knows this class is hard and makes it so easy to get a decent grade. If you care about your grade: study, pay attention in class, and for the love of god memorize the practice midterms he gives you.
I strongly advise everyone reading this to never EVER take this class with this prof unless you absolutely have to. The exams are impossible, our class averages were never above a 55. He curves your letter grade at the end of the semester but didn't round the percentages. I had a 67.6 and he REFUSED to round it to a 68 which would've been a B. 0/10
Attendance is not mandatory but participation does affect your grade. His tests are very difficult and because of that, he has to change the letter scale to ensure people are actually able to pass his class. I recommend finding anyone else to take this course with. If you do have him, make the most of office hours with him and find tutoring or SI.
AVOID AT ALL COST! Made my life a living hell. Prof. Carr talks in monotone and reads off the tophat slides. Exams and quizzes are very difficult, and the average on most tests was around a 50. I'm an A student, and there was a chance all semester I was going to fail his class. The only good thing is that everything's heavily curved.
He is the absolute worst, you will be drowned in studying to only get a 50 on the exam. The only positive is the fact he curves the test heavy. Avoid at all cost.
His PowerPoints had paragraphs on them and just needed to be summed up. He has no emotions when teaching and is very boring. He wonders a good bit and I can't tell when he's talking about something needed for the test or not.
The fact that this course is considered entry-level baffles me. I'll give him credit--he knows what he's talking about, but he can't explain economics to a group of freshmen at all. He reads exclusively from powerpoints and gives unhelpful examples. I got an A only because the curve was ridiculous. If you want to be happy, don't take this with him.
Absolutely Not. If you have the chance to avoid him, do. He does not k ow how to teach a basic class at all. Average grades for exams and quizzes was around 50, read off of slides. Just No.
Carr is simply not a good professor. I was scared coming into this class due to previous reviews and they all happen to be right. He gives you to absolute minimum of knowledge when it comes to econ and then expects you to somehow know everything. I will say that some did do well in his class but the majority did not. Id suggest a different teacher.
Carr's lectures were the most boring times of my day. He rambled on and on about things that we were not tested on and the tests contained little material covered in class. The only way you will get a good grade in this class is if you teach yourself through youtube, chegg, quizlet, etc. Avoid at all costs.
The class and tests are very hard (average on midterms were in the 50s), and Carr is not the best teacher. However he strongly curves the final grades of the class (for my section you only needed an 80 to get an A), attendance is not mandatory but participation is graded via top hat questions
No. just no.
Had this class fall and has been the most stressful class ever. Geoffrey is a really nice person just that his lecture are confusing since he mumbles and goes off track. HWs were ok but the Exams were terrible. He made the exams extremely hard and most of the avgs were 40-50s. He does curve at the end and thanks to it I was saved.
Do not take this class. Carr is a nice guy and very knowledgable but the way he lectures is horrible. He talks the entire class and mumbles so you can barely hear him. He rushes through the slides so you barely have a chance to read them. When I took him for Econ 221 he curved the whole class at the end because everyone got 50s on the tests.
I feel like people make him out to be worse than he actually is. His lectures are super heavy and boring, but it is not impossible to succeed. To do good on the tests just review his PowerPoints and make sure you know all of the information. Micro was definitely more challenging but at the end of the semester he heavily curved the grading scales.
Overall homework wasnt bad but tests are impossible dont take. he also writes the textbook he uses its horrible.
worst professor I have ever had and worst teacher I have ever had in my life.
Incredibly boring and monotone lectures and make questions intentionally tricky to confuse students. Avoid by any means necessary.
We had so many notes yet I was still confused the whole time. The tests were very hard. Don't take him.
He actually is the worst. DONT TAKE HIM AND RUN. I have all As and somehow ended with barely a C in this class. His test are all trick questions and he is the most boring lecture-er ever and it feels like he fiends off of kids failing.
I'm not by any means a straight A student, but on both two exams we took before the final I walked away feeling confident just to see that I got C's on both of them. Like everyone said lectures are about as boring, monotone, and stale as could be. Best advice is know those slides front and back like it is your hand.
Carr makes up his own version of economics that does not follow a single textbook or resource outside of his own textbook that you MUST purchase. He does not make learning macro exciting as he does not have a personality at all. Every year he uses the same exams with the same questions but changes the answers each year to something new.
He is a terrible lecturer; it's hard to understand any of the concepts he talks about. He uses a lot of trick questions for participation and on exams. That being said, I would recommend this class 100% over a class where you have to write a 30 page paper. The best advice I can give is to memorize the practice exams he posts, and READ the textbook!
Genuinely jail for him. Asks questions during class seconds after introducing a topic and you only get full credit if its correct... like how are we expected to immediately understand after listening to him ramble about nonsense. He is so short with when communicating and has to curve alot bc otherwise everyone would fail the class...
This professor is by far the worst one I have taken so far at USC. Carr had to curve the grade threshold so much, and that is a reflection of the professor, not his student's abilities. This man must get off on seeing students struggle. A required, unfinished textbook written by Carr himself was the last straw for me. Very unprofessional, RUN!
run. as far as you can.
this dude has no idea what he's doing
Do not take this class. His lectures are awful and make no sense. He wrote his own textbook and it also makes no sense. Exams are hard and his grades are weighted weird.
He's not THAT bad but he yaps a lot. Has his own textbook but it's not really on the tests? A lot of the test review questions are on the test. Boring class, but it could be worse
Currently writing this review in his class before my final. I am cooked. Lectures are super boring and no matter how much I study I average 64 on the midterms, which are only 180 grade points compared to the final being 200. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, find someone else, or take the course through a different school. I Hope the final is curved, goodluck
His class is very lecture-heavy, and he makes it almost impossible to pay attention. He rushes through the slides and gives no time to take any notes. His textbook is confusing, just like his lectures. While I'm sure he is a lovely guy outside of class, I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who isn't ready to sit through long, boring lectures.
I had him for both micro and macro. WORST THING EVER. his final is cumulative and he uses a dutch knockout for final grading. basically you can do very well the entire class and bomb the final (grade will go down) or you can do bad the entire semester and ace the final (you pass). this doesn't benefit the ppl that put in effort the entire course
Class average grades for both exams were below 70% which says something about his teaching ability. Told my friend that if he continues to perform well like he did on the first midterm, he would be satisfied with his grade (got a 68 on the midterm). You could not pay me any amount of money to retake this class. Avoid at all costs for your own sake.
Just dont do it bro. Just drop or change the class. Please dont do it.
This is definitely not the easiest class, but I think you just need to prepare and you will be fine. Read the book chapters before class and take good notes. The book can be convoluted at times but is mostly pretty easy to read. I would say about 40-50% of the exam questions (maybe even more) come straight from the practice exams. Take micro first.
He has 2 exams and 1 final(Dutch Knockout). He goes off on tangents during lectures that are convoluted and sometimes difficult to understand, honestly he isn't horrible just go over the study guides he gives and ask TA to meet up to help understand material more.
I am not sure how I passed this class. His lectures are terrible, and I can barely sit through them. The only reason I passed was that I would literally memorize the exam review. Thank God he curved a few points at the end because it improved my grade. This class just overall sucks.
I am an economics major and am usually good with economics, but this course made me feel like I knew absolutely nothing. Carr is boring, the exams are hard, and most questions are tricky. I couldn't understand anything in his lectures, honestly if you have a choice, take any other professor, but if not, good luck.
Hard class but if you master the way he asks questions, it's possible at least pass bc the final grade is curved. There's no point in trying to understand the material bc he always throws curveballs/trick-quest. Tip:study ALL the in-class questions he asks through tophat+ hw questions+exam review questions bc he reuses a good 1/2 of it on the exams
Carr is Retep and he is evil
Dr. Carr is an evil man. Retep
He wasn't the best lecturer but reading the textbook and participating in class made up a lot of the points. Textbook questions were graded on participation, homework was 50/50 for participation and correctness, and in-class questions were mainly participation. It was pretty difficult but not too bad and he curves a ton at the end of the semester.
He needs to either go back to Canada or get his teaching license revoked, I would rather bite the curb than ever have to take this class again. He does not teach, he's mono-tone and boring, and his homework assignments are nothing like the chapters. Exam averages are always around 60, expect a GPA drop if economics isn't your strong suit.
Lectures are boring and hard to follow, with similar language to the book that he is the author of. Reading the book is more helpful than class lectures. Exams are tricky, but abt 1/4 of the questions come directly from the review. Overall, hard class that I do not recommend at all. Take someone else if you can.
He is boring, but he rounded my grade to an A at the end by changing my attendance. I would skip many of the Friday classes and it hurt my grade heavily. No longer rounds tests just sets a lower threshold to get an A (86% for my class). VERY BORING, and he uses the same test questions every semester and they are not hard to find besides the final.
Super difficult class.
Don't take- theres a reason why everyone says bad things. Worst class times and you get sleepy.
Notoriously one of the worst teachers at the university for a reason. I've never heard a single good word about this professor. I cannot believe I made a B+, thanks to his dutch knockout system, which is easily the most redeeming quality about this class. He seems nice enough but may be one of the worst teachers I've ever come across. PLEASE avoid.
I quite literally changed my major from economics because of this class. I cannot begin to describe my hatred for this man. i missed one class bc i had the flu and my participation grade went down 20%. HIS HOMEWORK IS ALL TRICK QUESTIONS. not to mention, he made the book you learn from. do not take this canadian's class. it's not worth it.
The absolute WORST. He never responded to my emails and never did our TA. Doesn't even teach normal Econ because it is from his own textbook. Lectures are horrible and hard to sit through, his grading for homework and in class participation questions make no sense and bring down my grade. Super unhelpful just don't even try with him.
Lectures were definitely hard to follow at times, interesting but sometimes gets really convoluted and goes on tangents. Tests were very similar to the practice tests which was the most helpful part of the class. Honestly not as bad as some of these reviews but really for that reason. If you review readings and practice questions you will be fine
Yes, his teaching style is not amazing, but people make this class out to be a lot harder than it actually is. His tests are almost identical to the practice, he gave us a note sheet for the final exam, he extends homework and gives late credit, and although the readings are long, if you do them it can make sense.
If you enjoy unclear assignments, no rubrics, and being graded harshly with no feedback, this is your guy. Makes you handwrite everything, won't post answers, and final “assignment” is a weird game that affects your real grade. Strict and confusing. Avoid if you actually want to learn.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
This class absolutely sucks, all he does is lecture and the lectures do not even match up to his quiz questions which are super specific application questions. It's really hard to study for this class because the only recourses he has posted are the notes. If you like to do practice problems and multiple forms of review dont take this class please.
Class average on the first exam was a 55 and that explains it all.
This class is so hard and he will not help you out.
His lecture formats are hard to follow and the conceptual economics questions are hard to understand because he tailors them to his opinions. Something that helped me was taking notes before class then taking side notes about specific things he says during the lecture. Also highly recommend attending class.
do not take this professor find someone else
It's very hard to avoid him as a teacher in Darla Moore, but if you can, stay clear of this class for your own sanity. You have been warned.
I'm honestly not sure why people are saying that this class is difficult. I haven't studied at all for the exams, just went to class and did my homework, and I found each of the quizzes so far to be extremely easy. Sometimes the questions can be worded confusingly, but you can often work your way through them.
No. Avoid.
Dont take a class with this professor. I feel bad bc he seems like a good guy but he doesnt know how to lecture. The lectures were insufferable. Everyone on here saying the practice exams r just like the tests are lying. I studied 40+hours for the second midterm including the practice test and got a55.Our econ department needs help no one is good.
Horrible. The absolute worst. Traumatized me at first from ever wanting to take another business class again. Avoid at all costs. The only reason I passed is because he curved the entire class SO much. Avoid. At. All. Costs.
The lectures have basically nothing to do with whats on the test. He just loves to yap about this stuff because he's so passionate about it but the way he explains things doesn't make sense. If you don't want to get a 50 on the midterms then only study the practice exams they are basically what the test will be on. Avoid him if you can it was awful
This professor was awesome idk what everyone is talking about I loved him so much.
Yaps all class long and reads from slides. His voice will put you to sleep and he doesn't engage anybody in class. All he does is talk about the slides for 50 minutes and that is it. I would not take his class EVER again. EXTREMELY hard tests and he gives 2 midterms in one semester + a final. Lucky to get above a 70 on any test.
He actually just goes on tangents. It's like he forgets everyone knows nothing about what he is talking about. He obviously is republican and makes bias statements sometimes as well, which is kinda weird to me. The tophat is the only thing helping me pass so if you have to take him, LOCK IN in on tophat.
I am not going to hate on him completely but the way he teaches this course is too advanced for a intro level class. He is very educated and confident in his lectures but genuinely it is so hard to pay attention to him. He does questions mid lecture that do count for a grade. His tests are really hard but a good amount are from the practice exam.
Probably the worst professor on campus. Teaches based on personal opinions, often incorrect. Forces students to buy his own poorly written textbook. Even the TA struggles with his confusing, badly worded tests. Half the exam questions are tricky and seem designed to make students fail.
honestly all econ professors for intro level suck here. Carr is honestly smart, and you can tell he knows what he is talking but you will only do good on the tests if you can read his brain as there are so many made up BS questions. Take econ online if possible don't even try. Tophat is the only thing that got me an A so lock in that.
Please take this course somewhere else online. I do think Carr is a nice guy and is very passionate about economics. However, every time I walked to this class I wished an electric scooter would run me over. He heavily weights the homework because if he didn't, no one would pass his class. Exams are impossible to pass, no matter how hard you try.
He is not consistent in his explanations of material. He will go on tangents about graphs (which you never get tested on by the way) and then asks you about concepts on the test.
This class is an intro class and he makes the exams so difficult. He goes off topic very easily. He knows what he is talking about but does not know how to get it out in a lecture. His exams are very challenging, and he needs to curve them. His grading system is very weird.
he just reads off slides and goes off topic so easily. he is not good at explaining the concepts. The exams were very difficult and nothing like the tophat. attendance isnt mandatory but sometimes he asks tophat questions you can only answer in class
I can see why people would hate this man for a lower level course, but for economics majors, he is great. Very knowledgeable and works with students. Grades in his class are very low, but he adjusts his grading scale a lot to make up for it. Do not take him unless you are deeply interested in economics though.
Do not recommend taking this class with him, the lectures are very boring, and I taught myself 95% of this course. The exams are very conceptual in my opinion and hard to prepare for.
This man does not ever make sense, and you can't even teach yourself from the textbook because he's the one that wrote it...... If you are enrolled in this class start praying rn.
This class single-handedly ruined my semester. You can be a straight A student and you will still manage to barely pass this class. He is the absolute worst. We only have 3 exams, and one of them is the final. His test questions are extremely hard and nothing like the ones we do in class. Avoid taking this with him class AT ALL COSTS
Seems like a nice guy, but the class is extremely lecture heavy and majority of grades are based upon 3 exams that are very conceptual and different from the homework and study guides. Would not recommend taking this class.
listen to the reviews and never take this class. you can be the smartest person ever and still barely pass the class. he is a nice guy but his tests are impossible and no matter how much you study you will be lucky to get above a 70. class average for exams were always in 50s-60s. just save yourself and find another professor
Truly the hardest class ever. I'm a straight A student and barely passed this class. His tests are impossible and are nothing like what is taught in class. He thinks of himself very highly so much so that he developed his own textbook for the course so even if you try to teach the material to yourself you are stuck reading it from his twisted pov.
Kind of rude if you can even get in contact. Frequently cancels or isn't in his office hours. Knows what he's talking about, but not how to coherently tell it to other people. Also pretty boring, switch out if you can, if not be prepared to devote a lot of extra time to this class. Passing is still possible!!!
Carr is extremely informed about the topic, and I personally liked the lectures. I thought the topics were interesting and he seemed passionate about the class, which helped w/ engagement. The most unnecessarily difficult exams of any class I've ever taken though. Said "average was a 61%, about what I expected" after the first exam. Ridiculous
STAY AWAYYYY!!!!! He honestly seems like he would be very nice outside of class but overall the class average on every exam was 42-60. You can't even use AI or cheat because he uses his own textbook that he wrote which doesn't even make sense. Attendance is not mandatory but you get a grade based on pop questions he asks in class. STAY AWAY!!
Boring lectures, even if you go it still makes zero sense, tests are so hard literally even if you study for hours you still will probable get a 75, the tests are worded so weird to trick you, thankfully i passed but you honestly just have to pray
Carr is def hard. His tests are pretty similar to the practice though so learn the practice tests. The final was given and we had a front and back cheat sheet. Make sure you do tophat there are extra credit with that he also curves the final grade so an 85% was an A this semester. I got a 91% and i only ever studied a day or two before the test.
Exams are nothing like the practice questions, and make no sense. The average on the first exam was a 55/90 which he "expected", which is absurd. Besides when he goes on random tangents for 10-15 minutes, the lectures are boring and will put you to sleep. The only thing that can save your grade in this class is your Top Hat score. Stay away.
He wasn't as bad as everyone says. I got below the class average on the two midterms but on the final I got a 75 and still ended up with a B+. Lock in on top hat and you'll do well. He also lets you use a cheat cheat on the final and changed his grading scale, so an 80 was a B+.
HORRIBLE! take anyone else. The tests are so hard probably the hardest tests I've ever taken. Nothing is similar to notes. The notes are as if you're reading hieroglyphics. Makes his own textbook because he thinks he's a genius and so AI doesn't always help if you go to the class it still never make sense he doesn't explain anything he just speaks.
He's definitely not as bad as everyone says, but the class is still really tough. Exams are really difficult and the lectures are boring, but your Tophat score will boost your grade up. Plus, he adjusts the letter grade, so an 85 and up was an A. As long as you do the work and focus, you will do well.
I've been waiting to write this so ya'll can see how bad he is. His lectures barely have anything to do with the exams. The practice exams are your best option. TopHat is your saving grace; without that, I would not have passed. You could get the option to have a cheat sheet on the final, nicest thing he's ever done. Find someone else!
Horrible Teacher. In the lectures he just yaps about nothing and is hard to understand because he can't stay on a single topic. The Exams are extremely difficult but if you just study the study guide questions you'll hopefully pass. Just don't take the class. Stress is high, his care is low.
